September 3rd, 2022. La Habana.
My dearest darlings —
I was so deeply exhausted yesterday that I slept for nearly ten hours, more than I have in a good long time. Luckily, such restful sleep granted me the energy I needed to get through the day.
After a lovely breakfast (my friends, the juice here is made fresh daily. Today it was guyava; yesterday mango), I met with my program once more, and together we walked throughout el Vedado, our university neighborhood of Habana.
El Vedado is truly lovely. The amalgamation of architectural styles would, I am sure, charm anyone with half a mind to that kind of thing. I hardly know anything about architecture and nonetheless found myself affected. The university, in particular, consists of enormous buildings with imposing columns and highly symbolic statues, the different faculties joined by a grand staircase. I am so looking forward to entering it as a student.
We ended our refreshing walk at the ETECSA office, the residence of our supposed SIM cards. Despite having purchased one in August, there continued to be no permanent lines available — and, when I checked my accounts, I found my purchase had been returned to me due to low stock. Tomorrow we shall return here and purchase 30-day options, at the least. We did also stop by an internet park, where I have purchased myself 5 hours of internet for 125 pesos, or about a dollar, usable at any such internet park. The exchange rate at the moment is highly in my favor.
As another note on walking, piropos are unfortunately quite common here. I was warned by the program, but it was still somewhat shocking to hear two calls while walking the several blocks to my program. Interestingly, the "qué niña más linda" was followed up by an enquiring "¿y gracias?". Apparently certain people will demand a thank you for the unsolicited compliment. While unfortunate in its existence, it is interesting to observe.
Another aspect of gendered existence I have found fascinating here is in terms of housework. So far, only A and her mother N have helped with any of it, that I can see; several other students report similar dynamics within their host families. By now, after strong insistence, they let me help with my own dishes; not so for the other students, and I wonder if part of that is down to gender.
After further reflections and a diversity presentation, a hurried lunch, and yet another stop at ETECSA, we were given a strange and quite unclear presentation on academics in Cuba. Although I am still unsure how to navigate the system, the classes are certainly looking fascinating.
With several of the students who live nearby, we finally went to the Malecón, the sea-wall, and saw my most beloved ocean, turbulent and restless as ever. As always, her beauty knows no bounds, and the jagged rocks below the wall only add to her loveliness.
Our first program-led cultural activity occurred in the evening, with a visit to the Fábrica de Arte Cubana. FAC is a combination of nightclub, dance floor, and art gallery, with both a fashion show and cheap alcohol. Our program could not, by law, pay for our alcohol, but they did pay for everything else and did not discourage us from drinking. I did not purchase any drinks there, for their quality reflected their price and I am not fond of cerveza in any case. The dance floor, too, was somewhat crowded for my taste. The art, however, was fascinating — it ranged from photography to collages, printmaking, and paper mache made pf old history textbooks. With plenty of wall art and quotes, I was kept plenty entertained.
Our program leader called us a taxi in an old American car at eleven, not wishing us to stay out so late; yet once in the car, all ten of us jammed together in a very small space and needing to make use of laps, most of us decided to return to the Malecón rather than our homes. The late-night ocean walk was truly wonderful, and I entered into some quite entertaining political discussions with an eternal optimist and a strong pessimist.
One last fun fact: road safety is next to nonexistent here. Crossing the street is entirely up to the walker, with the constant knowledge that "el carro es el rey"; the cars will stop for nothing and no one. If they are honking, it is a symbol to run. Within the cars themselves, there are no seatbelts to be seen, and everyone here really does take advantage of every space in the car imaginable, resulting in extremely crowded vehicles. Good thing Habana is such a walkable city; I could hardly imagine driving here.
Again sending all my love,
MICHA.

The Ayuttaya archaeological theme park
People today go to historical attractions without feeling any appreciation to the context and meaning behind the histories and ora. what people only care about is their place inside social media platforms.
A composit form. Liberating people’s understandings of traditional perception of architecture. Structure, spacial, objective, compose together to create a space which is free association.
The historical presence of the facade holds mystery. Implies senses of motions, inviting a type pf curiosity that makes people want to learn more. People would not be able to know what the inside is until they step in.
the structure would be located next to the original historical attractions to let people who came out from the structure to experience what the real site is.
composing the different elements in the ayutthaya period for people to understand.
I want to create a space that helps increase people’s participation in the historical content and understanding of ayutthaya in a fun way. Right now, we have the archaeological park but there is nothing to stimulate our feelings and experiences.
Referencing from Disneyland. A hyperreal space where it is the happiest place on earth but people don’t question the fakeness of everything inside.
Going in, to increase the experience and participation, I put dress rental facilities. Once you wear the period costume dress, it has the ability to change your mannerism, convincing you that you have gone back in time. (A transportation stage that people take)
There are diversity of effects. Also picturous for photography. Ultimately helps to regenerate preservation, appropriation and transformation. A heterotopia inside historical.

Oh, can we call it a night?
What’s the most played song on your iPod? I don’t iPod anymore these days, but theres a site that will aggregate your Spotify listening, and the song I’ve listened to the most all time on Spotify is In Your Atmosphere by John Mayer. What is one quality you admire most in others? People who know what they want to do with themselves. What would you do with a million dollars? Invest it, maybe? Buy a new car. Start a non-profit that will save the world. Or just a small part of it. What’s your favorite song to dance to? All of them. What would your ideal birthday party be like?
No idea. This year I went to my favorite pizza place with a couple of friends, my mom and husband. Was pretty good.
If you could be reincarnated into anything you wanted, what would it be? I’m not sure I believe in any of that. What talent would you like to have? I wish I was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC at something. I’m good at most things, and can get by, but I’m not outstanding at any singular thing. Are you ticklish? Nah. What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? 3 days or so. I basically had the flu and felt like I was dying. Not like the real flu either, theres this illness you get when your body hasn’t slept in too long. What New Year’s resolutions did you make? None. What are three songs that mean the most to you? Mayonaise by the Smashing Pumpkins, Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton and Bornand Raised by John Mayer. Someone else used these italics and I’m just running with it.
Who is the one person you miss the most? No one? What do you think of your parents? They are flawed people. I make the best out of my relationship with my mom, but I’m just not sure I want to bother with my dad. What is one thing you would do to make the world better? Instill a sense of community. People would be so much better off if we all gave a shit about the other people we are on this planet with. What is your favorite kind of sandwich? Hot, cheesy, some kind of sauce. Other than that, I’m flexible. If you had a puppy, what would you name it? I got a puppy 2 years ago and his name is Finn. We wanted a Star Wars name and Supreme Leader was the runner up name. If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do? I can’t think of anything I’d wanna see. What people do behind closed doors is their business lol. How much cash do you have on you right now? None. I’m in pjs, but beyond that, I rarely use cash. What do you think makes you attractive to other people? Humor or personality? Would more money make you happier? I don’t know. We have a comfortable amount now, minus paying for healthcare. Steve may have a job offer that would cover the healthcare, but would I be happy not working? Would I just turn into a loser slug? What is one of your favorite memories as a child? I really don’t know. My parents pretty much screamed and threw things all the time until my dad moved out. Then they played horrible games with me in the middle. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t even remember about being a child. I’d say the good stuff started happening when I was a teen and could seek refuge in my friends and their stable houses. I had one friend in particular, Andrew, whose mom and dad were super nice and he had a fun little sister- every time I was over there, which was VERY often, it was like a slice of the good life. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do in your life? This was on another survey and I didn’t know how to answer it. I think once it’s done I just move on, I’m really a dweller. How do you measure intelligence? Unsure. I guess you just get a feeling for someones intelligence as you’re interacting with them.
What cartoons do you watch? None at the moment. I did just get Disney+, so that may change, but there aren’t really any cartoons I’m planning on watching. Have you ever used drugs? Nope. If you were a Skittle, what flavor would it be? The purple one. Sleeper hit. How would you describe your style? Hmmm. Casual indie bohemian with a side of lazy fat person. If you had to spend $1,000 in one hour, how would you spend it? The internet. Generally, my money goes to clothes or Halloween decorations. I really wanna buy some regular decor for the house though, so maybe that. What’s your favorite smell and why? I don’t have one. Something not flowery or overbearing. Something fresh and natural. Where do you buy your clothes? Anthropologie, ModCloth, Target, Gap, Old Navy, Loft. What’s your favorite kind of cake? Birthday cake? Funfetti? Does intelligent life exist elsewhere in the universe? I have absolutely no idea. I used to think that it was just statistically impossible that there wasn’t, but fuck I don’t even know how any of this got here, so I no longer have an opinion. If you could eat anything right now, what would it be? MilkBar birthday cake. Are you into tattoos? I guess so? I like the art of them, I follow a lot of tattoo people on instagram and keep up with their work. I just got my first tattoo a week ago and I’m 35, so it’s not like something I do a lot, ha ha. Do you like photography? I do. I have illusions that I’m a photographer sometimes. I should be currently editing a wedding right now, but here I am. I’m just not sure I’ll ever be the kind of photographer I’d like to be, so I don’t know what I wanna do with it going forward. If you were a holiday, which one would you be? Halloween 100% Do you have any siblings? Nope. If you were to get a tattoo, what would it be of? I just got one. It’s a bat pusheen. I really wanted a bat of some sort and pusheen is my favorite so I just went for it. I always thought my bat tattoo would be a little more dark, but it is what it is lol. What’s the biggest celebrity you’ve ever seen in real life? I hid behind a dumpster when I was like 14 and 3 of the Backstreet Noys walked right by me, ha ha. I have some photos with me and the guys from Good Charlotte from when I was a wee teenybopper. How many pushups can you do? Absolutely zero. What person in history do you admire most? None? I don’t think I admire anyone. These surveys are quickly informing me that I don’t believe in anything or look up to anyone. Am I inert? Who is your favorite actor? I don’t have one. Ha ha, see above. I like most of the stuff Chris Pratt is in. Robery Downey Jr as Iron Man is iconic, but I’ve never seen any of his other movies. I like Adam Driver in Girls and Star Wars. What is the most daring thing that you have done in public? Spoke. Have you ever lied about your age? I don’t think I’ve ever had cause to. Have you ever cried while watching a movie? If so, what movie? For sure. Everything makes me tear up in my old age. Last movie was probably Endgame, though. Are you afraid of anything that most people are not afraid of? Not like huge, life changing fears, but I’m always afraid a bug will get caught in my hair and I can’t touch drains because they freak me out. Where do you see yourself five years from now? I’ve never been one to make plans. Hopefully happy with more direction. What is your favorite candy? Fun Dip, Nerds, Starburst. Have you ever watched someone struggle with addiction? Not someone suer close, but there are lots of auxillary people I know that have and do. Who do you look up to for your style? No one in particular. I see things on the internet I like and try to incorporate that, but its always varied sources. Who is your favorite sports team? I don’t follow sports. How often do you drink alcohol? Once every two weeks? Even then, its usually just one drink with dinner. I don’t much care about drinking. It seems like a lot of work to fill myself up with something I don’t really like the taste of just so I can potentially feel bad later. What is your life in three words? Evolving yet bland. If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? I knew that, I’d be working towards it. Would you have a pet dragon? If so what color would it be? Sure. Whatever color dragon is fine with me. What’s your favorite sport? The only one I even kind of pretend to care about is baseball. Do you believe that homeless people are dangerous? No. If you could be skinny and miserable or fat and happy, which would you be? I’d always pick happy. If your life flashed before you, what do you wish you would have done? Hmmm, I don’t know. I don’t have like any huge regret at the moment so probably just wish I’d have enjoyed myself more. If you were to invent something, what would it be? Hopefully something that makes the world better. Some kind of climate change related thing? Who would you like to get to know better? This wholesaler real estate guy that has been selling us properties. Maybe if we knew him better, he would give us better deals, lol. Have you ever had a near-death experience? Near drowning when I was seven. Do you fear death? Yep. What is the strangest food you ever ate? Hmmm. I like food with interesting combinations. Like smelly cheese or beet pesto or something, but I’m not on board with weird meat and I don’t eat seafood. Do you think you’re cool? Nah. What reality show would you like to be on? None. I don’t watch any of them. The only show like that I ever watched was the Osbournes, ah aha. What’s your favorite thing to order at a Chinese food restaurant? Whatever is gluten free. Ususally no choices for me at most chinese places. PF Changs has pad thai and general tsos I can have and another place nearby has general tsos too, but thats about it.
I loved lo mein and crab rangoon in my former life, though. Are you happy with your life? For the most part. If you could name your own planet, what would you call it? I’d need some plantary details before coming up with a name. If you could live another 200 years. What would you hope to see? People learning that we need to work together. Would you rather be hot or cold? Well, I’m cold like 90% of the time and that sucks, but at least you can do something about it and layer up and get blankets and such- if you’re hot, you’re just stuck. How would you rate yourself? What am I rating here? I’m like a 0 at makeup skills, but like an 11 if you need someone to pick you up in an emergency. 10 at playlist making. 1 at doing the dishes. Would you ever move to a different country in an attempt to start over? Maybe not to “start over”, but I would definitely consider a dream job in another country if all the details worked out. If you could be a character from any book, who would you be? No idea. I read a lot of Stephen King and none of those characters are alright. Do you prefer taking baths or showers? I’d love to take a bath, but I’m a little big for the tub. Do you still collect toys from Happy Meals? Nope. I never ate happy meals even as a kid, so I never did. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? I drove two states over for a sandwich once. It was like a 15 hour round trip. In your opinion what is the greatest challenge the world faces today? People being willing to fuck over every one else if they think it will benefit them in any tiny, miniscule way. You are destroying everything by being an asshole and letting the people that really have all the money get away with it. Do you like dogs or cats better? I was 100% cat until I got a dog 2 years ago. I’m mostly dog at this point. Don’t tell my cat. What have you achieved that you once thought was impossible? Hmm, I don’t know. I’m a lot better off than my parents were. I just kind of thought the constant worrying about the car breaking down or the bills being paid was grown up life, so its nice to get here and know that I worked hard to not have those problems. If an ex texted you out of the blue, how would you respond? I don’t think I would. I’ve been with Steven for a decade, so theres def nothing that needs to be said to anyone that far back. Do you have a favorite poet? I don’t. I really like some poems I’ve read randomly in my internet travels, but I’ve never really been able to sit down and read a book of poetry. What have you tried to quit, but weren’t able to? Eating too much food? Would you rather go on a shopping spree with $200 or put it in the bank? I’d rather go shopping. I might save it, though. What was the last rumor that you heard? No idea. I don’t really have rumors around me at this point in my life. My friends aren’t like that and I’m not working anywhere at the moment. What country star would you most like to meet and why? I don’t really know who any of them are. Have you ever been in a car accident? Yes. One of them happened when I was like 15 and it pinched a nerve in my neck and half of my left hand went numb. My mom didn’t believe me for a really long time that there was something wrong until she watched me try to pick up a glass of milk with my left hand and it just fell to the floor. Are you an organ donor? Yes! What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done? Unsure. I’m fairly adventurous, but I don’t do super dangerous things. I guess just trespassing in old abandoned buildings when I was younger could have been dangerous. What is the meaning of life? Moments of joy. For you and others. What word do you like the sound of? Nothing in particular jumps out to me. Isn’t Cellar Door supposed to be lovely? What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? Hmmm. I don’t know. Its more about the brand I think. I usually get Jeni’s or the other fancy ice cream brand when I get the chance.
I always get the cake flavored froyo, though. Do you prefer cupcakes or muffins? Cupcakes. Are you an athlete? Ha ha, no. What did the last text message on your phone say? From my brother in law. He’s doing the work on the house we just bought, getting it ready for a renter. He wants more money, lol. What is the funniest movie you’ve seen in your whole entire lifetime? Man, I don’t know. I think maybe Grandma’s Boy was the funniest I had seen at the time. I usually don’t even like movies like that. What’s the worst nightmare you’ve ever had? I had this dream when I was a kid that I left the scissors out and they flew up and cut my moms fingers off and the whole dream was dark and black and white because it was night, but at the end, she picked up the phone (landline, because cell phones weren’t a thing then) and the only color was the green light coming from the phone that illuminated the numbers and she was trying to dial 911 with her fingers that weren’t there.
I probably had that dream close to 30 years ago now and it’s still clear in my mind.
What do you know how to cook? Lots of things. I’m especially good at carbonara or alfredo. What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had, and what was it from? I fell down the stairs and broke several bones, severely sprained both ankles and ended up getting surgery to fix the cartilage in one ankle. What’s your favorite amusement park ride? Any that my fat ass can fit on. What do you wish you were doing right now? Well i’m doing this instead of things I should be doing. Who are your musical influences? I don’t play music, so I’m not really influenced? What was your favorite band or musician when you were 12? The Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and the Back Street Boys, ha ha. What’s the best pick-up line that’s ever been tried on you? I don’t think anyone has ever given me one. How many drinks can you handle? I don’t really know at this point. Getting older changes things. I know that if I have one drink and then stop, I get a headache, lol. What was the longest phone conversation you’ve ever had? Hours and hours. Like 7 or 8 probably? Back in my day you could only talk to boys on the phone because we didn’t have cell phones or text messaging and you only had dial up internet. What’s your favorite candle scent? I got one from Anthropologie called Riviera that was my favorite candle scent ever. I bought two, but they are sold out now and I am very sad.

Signal boost, because apparently I am still getting new followers:
I HAVE MOVED TO PILLOWFORT.
I am Snowgrouse on there.
This here blog, and my sideblogs, mostly exist as archives and I may reblog something now and then, but all my new content is now on PF. This includes, but is not limited to:
-Conrad Veidt (photos, articles, gifs, links, etc.) So all of you who've followed my blogs in hopes of new Connie stuff? That's where it's gone.
-Bits and pieces of other Old Hollywood stuffs, including my other favourites like Basil Rathbone, Bonita Granville and Claude Rains
-Doodles, manips, possibly other forms of fanart
-Fanfic promo posts (the fic itself will be on Ao3, obvs)
-Discussion. Actual discussion. Comments and things. Where we can talk like human beings without someone hijacking our posts to rant about how evil we are! Imagine!
-Personal posts/blogging about life, opinion, meta on fandom, writing, sex-positive feminism, the odd Pagan/nondualist and immanentist/pantheist spirituality post, some disability stuff but I tag/filter all that meticulously, obvs
-All the stuff I previously posted to Kissinthedreamhouse like vintage erotica, art, photography, because they don't do sideblogs (yet)... Romantic stuff, mostly. N/SF*W stuff is tagged and filtered as such. The site rules require that, too, and fair's fair--if it's not your cuppa, you can filter all of that out (or any other keywords you might want to add to the blacklist feature that's on there natively).
-Quotes
-The odd cute cat post, including Dolores The WTF Cat because I have to share the comedy unfolding daily before my eyes
-History and culture, with a special emphasis on The Golden Age of Islam
And whatever takes my fancy. For better or for worse, you'll actually get more of me on there as a person because it's all crammed into the one blog. And if you like only one or two of my interests, filtering and browsing by tag exists, obvs.
But seriously, Tumblr is mostly tumbleweed right now. I repeat:
All my new content is on PF.

A brief history pf photography and truth
In 1988, American inventor George Eastman (1854-1932) released the Kodak no. 1 camera. In the last 30 or so years, film cameras have developed, and more people want to experience the effect it had in early onset years.
The market development into a range for everyone. Children to seniors. I love that from early years it was purposeful to be inclusive which sets a standard. This is how I started my love for photography, I started developing an interest as a child and worked my way in experience. If photography wasn’t as inclusive when I was a child, I probably wouldn’t have developed an interest for it.
1917-1920, the cousins Elsie ‘Iris’ Wright and Frances ‘Alice’ Griffiths took a series of photographs in their hometown of Cottingley, Yorkshire, Britain. They became well-known in the community for their fairy photographs of little girls. It was different and new to way of photography. It became bigger than they thought possible that they eventually made another series out of it.
Colour images looks realistic now because of the modern technology we have but colour images took time to navigate that realistic look. Colour photography was released commercially in 1907. They turned to hand-colouring and tinting to modernise photography, but the manipulation was not turning out to be natural as what they hoped for. In 1935, Kodachrome was realised to provide a more natural look to colour but some wonder if it was ever truly faithful to nature.
Early year images that provide an offset range of colour makes a person understand the situation of the photograph, you understand and know more about the image.

The postmodern is not concerned with the aura of authenticity. For example, in Las Vegas hotels are designed to reference places such as New York or Venice, featuring "Coney Island" or "The Grand Canal". Superficially the resemblance is impressive in its grasp of iconography and semiotics, specifically, in understanding that, say, Paris, can be conjured up in a condensed way through copying traditional (kitsch) characteristics pf Montmartre. Actual histories, geographies and human experiences are not only obscured, they are irrelevant, as these reconstructions are essentially decor for commercializing: gambling, shopping, eating and drinking. Indeed, communications increasingly featured what the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard called "simulacra": copies for which there was no original.
In a world overwhelmed by signs, what status is there for photography's celebrated ability to reproduce the real appearance of things? Fredric Jameson argues that photography is:
“renouncing reference as such in order to elaborate an autonomous vision which has no external equivalent. Internal differentiation now stands as the mark and moment of a decisive displacement in which the older relationship of image to reference is superseded by an inner or interiorized one...the attention of the viewer is now engaged by a differential opposition within the image itself, so that he or she has little energy left over for intentness to that older "likeness" or "matching" operation which compared the image to some putative thing outside”.

White Cloud.
On Tuesday 5th of November my professional practice module was given the opportunity to go visit Fergus Jordan who is a product professional photographer, Fergus runs White Cloud Photographic which is located at Blackstaff Mill in West Belfast. During this visit Fergus spoke about his artistic practice and his commercial work which he mainly carries out due to the success that has come from his business. He also spoke about his approach with clients which I thought was very insightful as not a lot of photographers are open about that. Fergus Jordan also gave a demonstration of his workflow through a workshop.
Commercial Photography and White Cloud.
During this presentation Fergus spoke about being a commercial photographer and how flexibility is key to being successful, he also told us to take every opportunity and photograph everybody and anybody. I thought this really showed how genuine of a person Fergus Jordan is as he doesn't think he is above anyone and is quite humble, the only thing that he asks is that clients are willing to follow his process as this is when he creates the best images.
Once a brand has got in contact with White Cloud about working with Fergus he starts his process with getting to the core of what the brand is about by meeting the client in person, he finds out about what they make or what product they're selling and their target audience. Overall, Fergus says he tries to get as much information from brand/business as he can as this will allow him to develop a better visual style, that will communicate what they're selling in a creative way for their audience. While this is a slower process, this is key to White Cloud as this helps to sell the product while elevating the brand.
Fergus revealed that he does all his photography within his studio which is located in West Belfast, however, other people are involved in the process as he has a pool pf people he can call upon. This showed to me the importance of networking as other businesses may call on your expertise if they need help with a project. As White Cloud is a slow working studio it means that it is a more expensive studio however, they are true to the way they work which allows them to produce good work and places them in a good position with their clients as you get what you pay for.
What sets Fergus and White Cloud apart is that he holds a broader skillset through cooking, makings things, pre production, creation of sets and developing ideas. Within the studio there is also surface creations happening which benefits his images as well as painting, building and collecting items which together can make up images and are reusable.
Fergus also revealed what could be considered a downside to being a commercial photographer which is the long days that go into creating work as you may have to work evenings and weekends. Most people who decide to work commercially decide to become self-employed which means there is a lot of responsibility before the photography can happen, unless staff is hired. Another downside to working self-employed that Fergus told us about was that you don't know how the week will play out however, no one is telling you what to do which is an upside to the madness.
Social Media.
During this visit Fergus showed us his recent work that has been posted on the White Cloud instagram and spoke about different shoots and their process, one that stood out to me was a shoot he did in Dublin for a whiskey brand. The shoot he did lasted two days, day one was spent in the bar and involved cocktails and placed the whiskey where it would be served. However, the second day of the shoot was on location around Dublin at historic locations which parallels with the history of the whiskey. This choice of different locations for me shows the complexity of the whiskey but also the extent of research that Fergus puts into finding out about a product.
On White Clouds instagram Fergus revealed that he believes that it is key for him to share his knowledge and tries to be open to share what White Cloud does as a brand. On their insta stories he shows behind the scenes, tutorials and insider tips which is great for students like me as you get an insight into how someone in the industry is working. He told us that he didn't think his brand was ‘special’ so he doesn't mind sharing this knowledge to his audience as he wants to set himself apart from other businesses who guard their craft like a secret.
White Cloud uses instagram to make sure they're showing of the caliber of work they produce within their business as they set out each post in advance to ensure regular uploads and engagement with their followers. Instagram is a catalyst to drive people to hire White Cloud as it showcases a variety of work which gives creative satisfaction as they can go beyond a simple image.
Process.
Within Fergus’ work within White Cloud he prides himself for being apart of the whole process, as for example during our visit he was photographing a bottle but was showing the detail of the design. To achieve this he took control as he explained that he was going to photograph the bottle (free from label), place the label on the bottle himself, put the cap on the bottle and the photograph every aspect of the bottle. I took note that a lot of time goes into the post production of his imagery to ensure the quality of the bottle is displayed to its full potential.
When Fergus meets a client he tries to gain their trust as he wants them to hand over all creative control to him, however, this step takes persistence as he explained that the beginning shoots aren't good as the client dictates what they want so he tries his best to sway them other wise. It is interesting that this dictates how Fergus charges as he spoke about how if a client has brand guidelines or documents to read he will charge more. On the other hand, if they hand over creative control to White Cloud the price will be lower.
Within in his work he shoots F16 or above as he was to maintain sharpness and a high depth of field as this will produce a clean image, this is an aesthetic choice that he has made which is trademark to White Cloud.
Finally, Fergus spoke about the use of models in his shoots as he does not have the budget to be paying hand models for different shoots, to overcome this he scouts people who are already present in the shoot which allows him to vary the imagery and develops a sense of handmade. In conjunction, he collects and brings his own props to different shoots to create a sense of quality.
Advice.
For me, the opportunity to visit Fergus Jordan who is a professional within the industry was really insightful and greatly appreciated as it allowed me to hear what it is like to be a photographer in the real world and is successful in doing so.
Fergus gave some good advice as well during our visit as he told us to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and have the confidence to go beyond the norm that is out there as this will allow us to be successful. I found this quite inspiring as i currently feel scared to push myself outside of my comfort zone, even though I have ideas that I want to pursue as I am afraid of failure or embarrassment which I know I shouldn't be.
Another key piece of advice that Fergus gave us was to not take ourselves seriously which is true as I think when you start to take yourself seriously you become more closed off and not appreciative of the advice and suggestions of others.

Dissertation Proposal and Research
Proposed title and subtitle:
Exploring food in photography and questioning its consequence in art, commercial, lifestyle and social media imagery; Will food photography ever be considered as art?
Main overview and focus of the subject, how it will be explored and a sequential order of contents. 'What artists/designers or case studies are relevant to your dissertation topic?' Indicative Bibliography of planned sources for research including images.
Whomever you are, wherever you live, whatever your beliefs, standings or circumstances food and drink impacts your life; whether you eat it or not. What most of us see on a daily basis is the consistent rise of food being documented. It may be a plate of excess or famine but through some means we will see an image of food. Prior to BC (before camera) food would appear in paintings and fine art as still life to serve as a conduit to communicate a symbolic message. The dutch masters could ennoble a simple table setting of wares yet, “superior attention [was] reserved for history painting or the grande manieré.”
Pieter Claesz (Dutch, 1597–1660), A Roemer, an overturned pewter jug, olives, half-peeled lemon on pewter plates, 1635
When we think of still life paintings we refer to objects such as flowers, wine, fruits, vegetables, pieces of meat and fish etc. The obvious symbolic statement being the social standing in the community or of the community to which the owner or commissioner of the painting exists. Pronk still life composing of gold and rare household goods indicated the wealth of the owner. Fast forward a few centuries and we are doing the same to our social media platforms. Getting lost between avocado toast, mirror glazed cakes and the phenomenal list of dietary requirements and intolerances that have all of a sudden besieged our modern society is the 21st century’s version of our social standing. With the rise in photographing our food what has this done to food in photography? Much like Bryson suggests, “interpretation of still life has generally languished.” So how are we attempting to compete with the other genres of photography let alone finding our place within art? What will it take to convince the critics that food photography doesn't just belong on a feed (literally) or cookbook? Will we ever take food photography seriously? I don't mean to demean the highly talented photographers and stylists that spend hours constructing impossibly perfect dishes. On the contrary. I mean to take it as seriously as a piece of art. Has food photography shot itself in the foot by becoming so vernacular that we have become blind to it? With the technological progression of camera phones and the constant need to be connected to everyone in the world at the same time, (yet achieving exactly the opposite), snapping our food is second nature.
Food blogging; images from my Instagram Account, @carina_ioannou_photos
The entire dining experience has been elevated to accommodate the instant blogger and it is commonplace for diners to reach for their phone as soon as the plate hits the table. One restaurant is even handing out an, “Instagram kit to help them take better food photos.” Along with the rise of food being photographed for social media purposes we are also spoilt for choice with imagery in other formats. Cookbooks, magazines, television adverts and so on are packed full of historical references and artistic synthesis yet there still seems to be a glass ceiling on the acceptance of food photography as art. My own collection of cookbooks promises to delight my tastebuds as well as my eyes. I often turn to my regular recipes through the years but there are some cookbooks that I have purchased because of the photography. In, Feast For The Eyes, Bright explains that cookbooks, “like photobooks; their pictures have become more aligned with still life and art practices.” The aesthetic nature of the modern cookbook is more similar to an art book. Techniques and positioning of food photographed wold not look out of place on a gallery wall but it still fails to makes that leap. One book I discovered that attempts to raise food photography to high art is, Culinary Art by Marianne McEwen. The cookbook features recipes that evoke memories of McEwen’s childhood alongside photography that emphasises the beauty of the ingredients. Translucent onion skins, delicate strands of herbs and patterns of nature are displayed in such a way that they almost resemble something you would expect to find in archived drawings from the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Peruvian daffodil (Pamianthe peruviana), 1933. Watercolour and pencil on paper, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London This illustration by Lilian Snelling
The hypnagogic photography of the food is sometimes blurred to accentuate the feeling of memory and the clean whiteness of the page affirms the link of McEwen’s particular form of culinary art as heavenly, superior, pure and almost unattainably gorgeous; not unlike a trompe l’oeil.
Front and back cover of culinary Art by Marianne McEwen.
McEwen’s first few pages illustrate, “A few easy nibbling ideas [that] set the right tone.” Combinations of, “thinly sliced fennel drizzled with lemon juice” and, “Oysters on the half shell with lemon wedges and hot sauce” conjures up visions of Juan Sanchez de Cotán’s, Quince, Melon and Cucumber. Simple yet sophisticated foodstuffs placed on an alter.
Juan Sánchez Cotán, Quince, Cabbage, and Cucumber, 1602, oil on canvas, 68.9 cm x 84.5 cm (San Diego Museum of Art)
The difference between the photography you will see in a cookbook and that which is considered art cannot be both. Although McEwen and many others try to achieve this McEwen’s aim is for the reader to make the food, regardless of how pretentious it sounds! Food in art photography is not meant to be eaten for it to be taken seriously. Food in art photography appears as a symbolic reference like it does in paintings. References to life, death, economics, politics, sex and religion. Sometimes all at once. Images in cookbooks and upmarket supermarket magazines make us long for the ultimate epicurean experience. The photography and styling portrays the wonderfully exotic dish that you will never prepare with the kitchen equipment you will never use in the expensive kitchen you will never own in the house you can’t afford. However, I still reach for my wallet and purchase the cookbook that promises me this perfect life; this is not that far removed from pronk still life so why can the photography in a cookbook be considered as art? If we compare this image from the cover of Waitress Food Magazine and Irvine Penn’s, Salad Ingredients the similarities are fairly obvious. From lighting, colours, composition and styling. You could also argue that Penn has left space for text as the image was intended for commercial use. So what is the difference? Will wee look at the front cover of Waitress Magazine in a few decades and realise that it is in fact high art or will will still look down on food photography as the poor cousin to art photography comprising of food?
Waitrose Food Magazine, January 2016: Health Special
Photograph by Irving Penn, 'Salad Ingredients', published in American Vogue in January 1948, dye transfer colour print, USA, photographed 1948
To be continued…. (Above) Books that I have so far looked into as part pf my research
As I continue my research into food photography and its place within art I intend on exploring other photographers considered artists and those as food photographers. Further to this I intend on examining the stigma of being classed as a lifestyle/food photographer.
I also want to include stats on the food industry and I have already reached out to food photographers and industry specialists with questions.
The facts below highlight how important the food and drink industry is to the UK and its economic growth both nationally and globally. This is to illustrate how important the advertising and marketing of food is becoming.
- Food and drink manufacturing in the UK is worth £96 billion. - Total consumer expenditure on food, drink and catering in 2016 was £203 billion. - On average 11% of all household spending is on food.
