SO I have been reading all year about Robespierre and I have *so* many thoughts, and want to make a short-ish (maybe like 70 pages) narrative comic so I can get my thoughts out somewhere.
I wanted to make a little rambly note below about this comic before I start posting the rest of it. The comic itself won't have a regular schedule, I'm just gonna work on it when I'm in super obsessed mode and need to get my thoughts out lol Please follow #incorruptiblecomic for more :3
So this comic is based on a lot of reading about a real person, but I want to emphasise that I'm not a historian or expert. It would be disrespectful to say this comic is completely faithful to history when I'm an artist not a historian (*side eyes Ridley Scott*) and this comic is kinda mixing in a bunch of things relating to me personally and how I am personally seeing it reflected in the books I'm reading- autism, being misinterpreted, the devisiveness of modern day politics, misinformation and propoganda in media. The narrative will be more focused on feelings rather than timelines, and feelings arent rly something you can garuntee to be historically accurate for obvious reasons lol
Something I've found really interesting about French Revolution is that there is a lot of extremely different interpretations of the same events, dependant a lot on the writers own culture/upbringing/national identity etc. I lived in genuine cant-afford-to-eat poverty for like 4 years post recession, under a Tory government that said I was leeching off benefits, and I'm sure that's also coloured my own interpretation too.
I'm explaining this cos this comic shouldnt be taken as some sort of historical resource, just my personal interpretation and thoughts around an interestesting person I found very relatable/easy to understand, who I see being misunderstood a lot.
If you want to do actual historical reading, there's loads of books out there with wildly different interpretations. Its probably good to read all of them, with critical thought, and find the 'in between' in all those interpretations. Thats what makes history really interesting! My favourite English books Ive read so far are a couple of different books by Peter Mcfee, and 'Twelve Who Ruled', which is probably the most unbiased book I've read, that still paints a vivid picture for someone who isnt super academic like me.
I hope you enjoy my interpretation~

Beverly Shaw, Sir!
Here's a comic I made for a music themed charity zine about Beverly Shaw. More details under the cut!
Last year, I was part of a charity zine called TidBits: Beat Sized Comics for your Heart! I made a comic about the iconic Beverly Shaw. Oftentimes, when we talk about queer life in the past, we imagine that those who lived through different eras were needlessly sad, never had any sort of success, and had to be miserable by virtue of when they lived. Beverly Shaw helps remind me that this isn't true: people have always danced and sang together. You can learn more about Beverly Shaw on the Queer Music Heritage website, which has done amazing work chronicling details about her life.
Please check out the rest of the zine to see other artist's responses to the prompt about how music effects them and consider making a donation to Sam's Fans if you do download it.

Comics about ancient history and mythology chart
A list of comic books inspired by the histories and mythologies of ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, and other cultures. As it turns out, most of them are Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées (not necessarily available in English). See the full web version of this list for even more titles.

FALSE MIRACLES PROCESS!!
I had the privilege to take a class this semester focused around developing a nonfiction comic in collaboration with the Ohio History Center. I got to peruse their collection and research a chosen topic.
I knew from the start I wanted to do something involving medical history, and the museum had a display case of bottles from patent medicines from the late 1800s/early 1900s.
After a quick Google search, Piso's Cure for Consumption yielded the most results, so I decided to make it my focus. I did a lot of digging. This comic wouldn't be possible without the help of the public library system of Warren, Pennsylvania, or the Warren County Historical Society, which by sheer luck had an exhibit running about Piso's Cure while I was in the research stage.
My brainstorming process was a bit of a mess, as my sketchbook tends to be (pictured above, featuring bonus doodles of my OCs). I entirely redid my thumbnails several times.
Here's a page of the comic in each stage from thumbnails to what I presented at the final critique. This page actually didn't go through nearly as many revisions as some of the others lol.
Note: My thumbnails normally don't have text in them, this was refined a bit for the purposes of showing to the client!
I did my pencils entirely digitally, which I hadn't done before but ended up really liking. Turns out I can get way tighter pencils that way. I printed them out as blueline to ink traditionally on Bristol, then scanned them back in to touch things up and color digitally. Digital lettering was also a gamechanger and saved a lot of time (although I did hand letter the fancier fonts).
It was quite a journey, but I ended up with a comic I'm quite happy with! (I'll be posting it tomorrow once I finish some revisions, and will link it to this post when I do.)

Soon after his escape, Edwin starts to learn about the things he’s missed.
#this is the cenotaph in London btw#also hc their clothes change with their mindset so the bow tie coming undone was on purpose not a consistency error teehee#this is in 1989 not long after they met#I’m having feelings about Edwin learning about historical events#this might be a bit oc for him to cry in front of Charles but I think the adjustment period after his escape must have been pretty rough#*ooc*#most people Edwin knew in life would have lived through ww2#I’m sure he feels conflicted about it#he went to hell but if he had lived his life would have been horrific aswell#my art#dead boy detectives#charles rowland#edwin payne#dead boy detective agency#dead boy detectives art#dead boy detectives fanart#dbda#dbda art#dbda fanart#dbda comic#renew dead boy detectives

tom taylor has truly rotted online disk horse cause wdym people are seriously upset that during an event where heroes lose their powers this guy is the one who starts ordering people around
he’s very bossy and likes being in charge. no of fence but ofc he’s going to lead instead of flash on a motorbike or an aquaman who can’t swim
#be honest — it’s annoying he’s the focus all the time. but bffr he has more leadership experience than almost anyone in that room#THATS HIS ENTIRE THING#‘why are people following the stupid sidekick’ idk man maybe cause he’s been leading teams since 1964. get a grip#nightwing#dick grayson#dc comics#spokes#it’s fair that waid can’t write diana for shit and she deserves a spotlight but diana drgaf about leading historically so. anyway
