The Bering Strait Hypothesis
We briefly discussed the Bering Strait Theory in the last post, but now we’re going to delve deeper into it’s analysis and its significance to the scientific community as a whole. The Bering Strait Theory states that early groups of humans migrated across the Bering Strait land bridge that connects Russia and Alaska during the Last Glacial Maximum (Childs, 2018).
Right now, this land bridge is underwater, and has been for most of the 20th to 21st century. Depending on climate change, historically, parts of the Bering Strait have been above water for explorers and scientists to analyze. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Bering Strait was likely used as a land bridge anywhere between 40,000 to 15,000 years ago (National Geographic, 2018). Evidence to support the Bering Strait Theory includes the existence of human settlements on either side of the land bridge (Heaton, 2002), as well as evidence that the land bridge itself was capable of sustaining human life for thousands of years until the sea levels raised again (Childs, 2018). We also know that the Bering Land Bridge existed from detailed expedition records as far back as the 18th century. In particular, Peter the Great, the Tzar of Russia from 1682 to 1725 was responsible for organizing an expedition of the Eastern coastline of Russia. The Chukchi people are indigenous grounds who have been living on the Chukchi peninsula since ancient times, and these indigenous people were well aware of the land bridge that connected their land to the landmass across the Bering sea (National Park Services, 2018). But Peter the Great hired Vitus Bering to explore the region, and discovered that the Chukchi people were right in that there was in fact a land bridge connecting Russia to the Americas (National Park Services, 2018). James Cook took the lead on the opposite side of the land bridge, in 1778 Cook explored the Alaskan coastal region and discovered what Bering had, the evidence of a land bridge leading over to modern day Russia (National Park Services, 2018).
It wasn’t until the mid 20th century that the scientific community started racing to see if there was any proof of human migration across the Bering Strait land bridge. The first start was seeing if the bridge could even support early human life, they did this by testing sediment from under the sea from the bridge itself and testing it to see what sort of plant life lived on the land when it was above the water. Eric Hulten was the lead botanist to conduct this research, and he found that the landscape at the time of human migration would have likely contained a vast about of varying arctic shrubbery that could have been used for fire and food for large mammals (Ghose, 2014). Researchers also did genetic testing on modern day Siberian humans and modern day Native American humans along the Pacific Northwest Coast and South America. What they found was that the populations of Native Americans shared similar genetic differences in their mitochondrial DNA (Ghose, 2014); but there were no genetic similarities between the Siberian population and modern day Native Americans along the coast. This led to another question - if humans did in fact migrate across the land bridge from Siberia, why isn’t there genetic evidence? The current theory for that would be the Bering Standstill Hypothesis. This hypothesis states that during the migration across the Bering Strait, early societies couldn’t cross into the Americas because of the ice sheets; so they simply waited out the ice age on the land bridge. Due to the sheer amount of time early humans spent on the land bridge, their genes had changed so significantly over the passage of time that any remaining genetic connection to their Siberian ancestors was lost (Ghose, 2014). This theory has one significant hole in it, however - there’s no archaeological evidence of human settlement on the land bridge itself. Some argue that it’s possible the evidence has washed away in the sea, but for the portions of the bridge still above water; it’s problematic that there’s no evidence of human life to support the Bering Standstill Hypothesis.
This opens the door to one more theory, however - the use of boats. As we discussed in the previous post, once the ice sheets started melting, there would not have been a lot of time to cross the land bridge into the Americas. Some researchers believe that in order to get into the Americas before the land bridge flooded, early migrators used boats to sail to nearby islands and eventually navigated the waterways to populate the Americas (National Geographic, 2018). This theory is supported by genetic evidence of human remains along the coastlines of North and South America. Archaeological evidence places human inhabitants in Chile by 14,500 years ago. Now if our early migrators crossed the land bridge around 20,000 years ago like it’s believed, how on earth did these migrators get to Chile in such a short time on foot? Especially if they had to wait for the ice sheets to melt? Travelling via boat would be much more rapid than travelling on foot (National Geographic, 2018). More evidence for this theory is from a tooth that was found on the Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska. Radiocarbon dating placed the tooth at being approximately 10,500 years old, genetic testing showed that only groups of indigenous peoples along the coast of California and Chile matched the genes that were held within the tooth. Scientists found a genetic link between early migrators and modern day indigenous people (National Geographic, 2018).
So here’s what we know for sure, the land bridge does exist. It’s entirely possible that early humans crossed into the Americas using the land bridge. The bridge was capable of supporting both human and animal life at the time of the suspected crossing. Human settlements have been found at both ends of the land bridge. But due to a lack of archaeological evidence, we aren’t sure whether or not humans waiting out the ice age on the bridge or if they used boats to ferry across the water. We know that there’s a genetic similarity between indigenous peoples along the coasts of the Americas, but that something must have happened between the crossing to result in the genetic similarities between modern day Siberian people and modern day Native Americans to be diminished. You may be wondering if this is the only theory to explain how early humans migrated to the Americas - the answer is no. There are a number of theories about how the Americas were populated by early migrators. The other primary theory for the population of the Americas is that is the Solutrean hypothesis. This hypothesis states that early migrators came across the Atlantic Ocean in boats from SW Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum (Bradley and Stanford, 2004).
