‘Jason!’ you yelled, picking up the discarded jumper and shaking out thecreases. He’d bundled it up and stuffed it behind the waste bin. ‘I swear -’

‘What?’ Your brother’s voice came from the top of the stairs, and whenyou looked up he was leaning casually on the bannister. He was mockinginnocence, but you could see the challenge behind his expression all the while;even from this distance. 

You waved the jumped at him. ‘Did you really think I was going to missthis?’

‘Not mine,’ he said simply. 

‘No? How comes it literally has your name sewn into the label?’

‘What?!’

You smirked as he moved to start barrelling down the stairs, determinedto check the validity of your claim. 

You didn’t even give any resistance as he stanched the jumped out ofyour hands and viciously tried to find the label. You watched him, trying tocontain your smirk as he found his name and gave it a brief tug.

‘You seriously sewed my fucking name into it?’ he asked, slowly raisinghis eyes to meet yours. 

‘So you couldn’t lose it. I know how much you love Christmas jumpers,’you teased, folding your arms so that he couldn’t try to force the thing backinto your hands. 

Jason practically snarled at you, but you held firm. Your youngerbrother’s moods weren’t anything to concern you. 

‘Please wear the jumper.’ 

For a moment, it looked as though Jason was going to argue the point. Asif he was going to complain about the whole thing. But, for once, hisexpression seemed to soften. 

‘Why is this so important?’ he asked instead, still fiddling idly withthe label.

You shrugged. ‘Because it’s the only day before Christmas jumper daythat we’re all going to be together,’ you told him, taking a step away fromhim. ‘And, if you don’t wear it,’ you said as you started to walk away, ‘I’mgoing to edit baby pictures of you in the most embarrassing ways possible.’

‘You wouldn’t dare!’ he called after you, but you both knew that it wasno idle threat. The ideas were already circling your mind. 

‘Wear the jumper,’ you called back, ‘and youwon’t have to find out.’

Teenage Fauntleroy & Brujon friendship, sulking/cheering up, ~800 w

Fauntleroydoesn’t go here anymore, but climbing on top of the Gymnase still feelsfamiliar rather than nostalgic. They scramble onto the roof and look aroundimpatiently. Two feet in dirty sneakers are sticking out from behind a vent.Fauntleroy huffs, walks over and kicks against the sole of Brujon’s left foot.

“Hey,” theysay. “Why weren’t you responding, you jerk.”

Brujonlooks at them, turning his head with a degree of lethargy that’s very unlikehim. “Phone died,” he says.

Fauntleroydrops down into a sitting position and frowns down at him, twitching their footso their shoe scuffs against the rough surface of the roof. “What’s wrong?”they demand.

“Nothing’s wrong,” Brujon grumbles and he doesn’teven bother to pull a dramatic face, which means something’s definitely wrong.

Fauntleroystares at him and waits.

“So I fuckup another test, who cares,” Brujon mutters at the sky. “Worst they can do ishold me back again. Big fucking deal. So I won’t graduate this year. At least Iwon’t have to go do something worse-”

Fauntleroypicks at their nail polish. They can’t really argue with that. Universitysucks. Nothing has sucked the fun out of photography faster than having tostudy it. Still, seeing Brujon so low is…distressing. It’s pissing them off.

“Ugh, let’sget out of here then,” they say.

Brujondoesn’t answer.

“Fine,”Fauntleroy says, digging around in their bag. “Then I’m painting your nails.”

“No,” Brujon protests, swatting theirhand away when they try to grab his.

“Then getthe fuck up,” Fauntleroy orders him. “Come on.” They let go of his hand and tugon his long curls instead.

He swatstheir hand away again, but this time there’s a little more energy in hisexpression, maybe even a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Want to goand play Karma’s a Bitch?” Fauntleroy says coaxingly, leaning back on the palmsof their hands.

“Nah,”Brujon hums. The sullen apathy is wavering though and Fauntleroy is eager tosee the back of it.

“Then we’regoing thrift shopping,” they say.

“Mmm,”their friend mutters vaguely.

“Alright,purple nails it is,” Fauntleroy decides and before Brujon can react they grabhis arm and lock it into a grip that makes him protest very loudly.

“Knock itoff!” Brujon throws his weight against them to push them off balance butFauntleroy braces their feet.

“I’ll letyou go when I’m done.”

“Fine we’ll go shopping, get that stuffaway from me.”

Fauntleroyhasn’t even opened the bottle of nail polish. They really would have needed twohands for that. “Good, cause I’m bored.”They let go of Brujon and spring to their feet.

“Don’t youhave class this afternoon?” Brujon asks, rubbing the shoulder of his assaultedarm and doing a rather bad job of hiding a smile.

“Don’t you have class this afternoon?” theysnark back, climbing nimbly down the side of the building again.

“Yeah butit’s just French, like, I knowFrench,” Brujon says, following them. When his feet are on solid ground again helets his face relax into his usual laid-back grin and Fauntleroy feels theworld shift closer to its natural order again. “I don’t have fancy uni stuff to go to.”

“Neither doI,” Fauntleroy sniffs. “Cause it’s fucking garbage.”

“Whatever,”Brujon says as they slip off the school grounds and he sounds properly likehimself again. “Your blog’s probably full of stuff better than anything thosetools can come up with.” He slings an arm heavily across Fauntleroy’s shouldersand they jostle against him in retaliation until they are walking as close asthey can get while looking like they don’t mean to do anything of the sort.

“Where arewe going again?” Brujon asks.

“Thriftstore,” Fauntleroy says contentedly. “I’m gonna get you into somethingburgundy. And don’t argue with me.”

Brujonrolls his eyes. “As long as it’s not another damn cardigan.”

“Hey, thatlooked good on you and you know it,” Fauntleroy says. They glance sideways attheir friend. “We’ll get you a nice dress shirt. You should wear those more. Parnassewould agree with me you know.”

Brujonsnorts, but his desire to impress Montparnasse usually outweighs his hatred ofshopping. As far as Fauntleroy is concerned it is the only reason to expressany sort of reliance on Montparnasse’s opinion without following it with asarcastic comment. Montparnassedoesn’t believe in thrift stores.

“Youlooking for something?” Brujon asks.

“Always,”Fauntleroy replies, shifting under the weight of his arm. And they are, alwayslooking for new stuff, hidden treasures, but they know there isn’t anything tofind right now. They went to this store yesterday already. But it’s close andthere’s an awful green tassel thing that will make Brujon laugh if they try iton and, if they remember correctly, at least one burgundy shirt that was a sizetoo big for them.
