I know I’m asking a lot but what caused Mike’s depression in the mid 90s? When did the others start noticing?
Also side thing, does micky teach Mike Italian?
mike suffers a second wave of severe depression in the 90s due to a heart attack in '93, likely due to chronic stress and a caffeine addiction. and also he was working at the city council which probably was a very stressful job.
seeing as he had never had one before obviously it was extremely scary and it took a while for him to recoup. due to his generally bad health, he was already at risk for a possible second one and his Dr told him that the second one may be his last so he woukd have to slow down Significantly and take things slow for pretty much the rest of his life. also, no more coffee!!!! This all kinda crushed him and his friends were very fearful of a second heart attack in him so they enforced this halt heavily.
eventually mike just completely stopped doing everything he used to, that even includes all his chores and errands. its like he just stopped in his tracks. he became severely depressed. I think he felt like his life was over and they all realized he was becoming more and more depressed by the day. He ended up switching his antidepressant to prozac and a pretty high dose, too. that's why he ended up kinda letting himself go and gained an unhealthy amount of weight
unfortunately this weight put his health at risk, specifically more at risk of a heart attack despite the fact that his Dr told him that's what he had to avoid. He started having heart issues, his arthritis worsened and he lost a lot of mobility. it was a pain in the ass exercising all that weight off 😭
as for the Italian thing, Micky doesn't actually speak much Italian. his mom is white and his dad is italian, and while his dad did speak italian and did attempt to teach him and his sisters, none of them really retained it. he only knows enough to speak to his grandma who doesn't speak english well
#asks#gizmocrate-werecrow#the monkees#m&m headcanon#as we go along#i think it took micky a while to realize the real risk to mikes health due to his weight cuz I think he liked how mike looked#i think he still just had that image in his head of mike when he was severely emaciated and he was just happy to see him so fat#but it wasnt good for him#his weight was very healthy in the 80s and early 90s and he had to get back to that

I genuinely know multiple people in their 80's and 90's who are doing hard-core hikes on a weekly basis because they've kept their bodies and minds healthy. Where I live there's actually a team of park rangers whose whole job is keeping track of the town's oldest resident and keeping him from doing any of the bigger hikes, not because he can't physically do them but because he's like 95yo and they don't want to be liable if something does happen. When my great-grandma was around 80yo she was told she wasn't allowed to go on her morning hike alone, and so she started taking me - a literal 3/4yo - with her up the mountain every morning after we did calisthenics and before anyone else woke up, and she was bringing her walker on smaller hikes even a month before she died when I was a 19yo.
I also know people in their 40's and 50's who get winded walking up a flight of stairs because physical health was never a priority for them. I have an uncle who spent most of his childhood on crutches, and after getting off never felt the need to do the necessary physiotherapy to regain full mobility, and thus never had the ability to easily keep healthy in other ways, and he is so out of shape in so many ways that he struggles to pick up his TINY 6yo daughter. I have an aunt who for my entire childhood would be dripping sweat and have to take her inhaler after walking across the backyard, and a few years ago - in her early 40's - fell and messed up her hips, knees, and left wrist & elbow, and suddenly could barely climb a staircase without crying in pain, because her weakened joints couldn't support her weight.
But its not completely irreversible. That same aunt, after her fall, realized that she still wanted to be able to move and play with nieces and nephews, and started paying attention to her physical health. It's not a care about body image at all, and she still really doesn't mind being fat and embraces it as having extra padding for better snuggles. But she's started doing physiotherapy, stretching daily, watching what she eats more closely, and going for walks on a regular basis - starting small and working herself up - and regaining her health. She hasn't cut out sugar or carbs, and still has at least one Pepsi per day, but she's being more mindful of things like snacking on fruit rather than candy or nuts rather than chips. She's still and will probably always be overweight, and she certainly will never be able to go a full day without her inhalers due to athsma and allergies. But she's lost a significant amount of fat-weight and built up more muscle-weight than she's had in my life just from starting moving more and is able to take a walk around town or go on very short hikes without getting winded or being in pain. A few weeks ago I even saw her RUN across the backyard, bend to pick up my 4yo niece - her grand-niece - (who is actually bigger than my 6yo cousin mentioned above) and spin her around, without difficulty.
Just move. Take a walk around the block if possible. Stretch your limbs for 30s a day if that's all you can. Build up those muscles and strengthen your joints. Your body will thank you, and you'll be in better health and your body will age more gracefully if you do.
A lot of younger people have no idea what aging actually looks and feels like, and the reasons behind it. That ignorance is so dangerous. If you don’t want to “be old,” you aren’t talking about a number of years. I have patients in their late 80s who could still handily beat me in a race—one couple still runs marathons together, in their late 80s—and I lost someone who was in her early 60s to COPD last year. What you want is not youth, it is health.
If you want to still be able to enjoy doing things in your 60s and 70s and 80s and even 90s, what you want to do, right now, is quit smoking, get some activity on a regular basis (a couple of walks a week is WAY better for you than nothing; increasing from 1 hour a day of cardio to 1.5 will buy you very little), and eat some plants. That’s it. No magic to it. No secret weird tricks. Don’t poison yourself, move around so your body doesn’t forget how, and eat plants.
If you have trouble moving around now because of mobility limitations, bad news: you still need to move around, not because it’s immoral not to, but because that’s still the best advice we have. I highly recommend looking up the Sit and Be Fit series; it is freely available and has exercises that can be done in a chair, which are suitable for people with limited mobility or poor balance. POTS sufferers, I’m looking at you.
If you have trouble eating plants because of dietary issues (they cause gas, etc.) or just because they’re bitter (super taster with texture issues here!), bad news. You still want to find a way to get some plants into your body on a regular basis. I know. It sucks. The only way I can do it is restaurants—they can make salads taste like food. I can also tolerate some bagged salads. On bad weeks, the OCD with contamination focus gets so bad I just can’t. However, canned beans always seem “safe,” and they taste a bit like candy, so they’re a good fallback.
If you smoke and you have tried quitting a million times and you’re just not ready to, bad news. You still need to quit. Your body needs you to try and keep trying. Your brain needs it, too. Damaging small blood vessels racks up cumulative damage over time that your body can start trying to reverse as soon as you quit. I know it’s insanely, absurdly addictive. You still need to.
You cannot rules lawyer your way past your body’s basic needs. It needs food, sleep, activity, and the absence of poison. Those are both small things and big asks. You cannot sustain a routine based on punishment, so don’t punish your body. Find ways to include these things that are enjoyable and rewarding instead. Experiment. There is no reason not to experiment—you don’t have to know instantly what’s going to work for you and what won’t, you just need to be willing to try things and make changes when things aren’t working for you.
You will still age. Your body will stop making collagen and elastin. Tissues you can see and tissues you can’t see will both sag. Cushioning tissues under your skin will get thinner. You’ll bruise more easily. Skin will tear more easily. Accumulated sun damage will start to show more and more. Joints will begin to show arthritis. Tendons and ligaments will get weaker and get injured more easily, as will muscles. Bones will lose mass and get easier to break. You’ll get tired more easily.
But you know what makes the difference between being dead, or as good as, in your 60s vs your 90s? Activity, plants, and quitting smoking. And don’t do meth. Saw a 58-year-old guy this week who is going to have a heart attack if he doesn’t quit whatever stimulant he’s on. I pretended to believe it was just the cigarettes, and maybe it is, but meth and cocaine will kill you quicker. Stop poisoning yourself.
Baby steps; take it one step at a time; you don’t need to have everything figured out right now. But you do need to be working on figuring things out.

The Second Step (Joe x Reader)
I couldn’t sleep one night last week, so I wrote this in the middle of the night to try and pass the time. A little sick!Joe/husband!Joe one-shot for you. This is also my first fic that has an illustration to go with the post!! Thanks @paper-sxn for doing the line art! (colors by yours truly, click on photo for better quality)
Prompt: late 80′s/early 90′s, you being Joe’s darling caretaker when he, unfortunately, comes down with sickness one day.
-----
The hot water you were both submerged in had fogged up the faucet on the opposite end of the bathtub. Wet ends of your hair clung to the back of your neck, and the faces of your fingers were beginning to have a fairly pruned look to them.
Joe was in front of you, seated between your legs, and slumped backwards. He'd become dead weight nearly the moment he sat down; his fatigue being to blame.
The sinus infection had taken a lot out of him that day. While he (mercifully) didn't have a fever, he did seem to have everything else. You woke up in the middle of the previous night upon sensing an emptiness in your bed, and after listening for movement with no success, you went on a quest to find your missing husband.
He ended up being on the couch- with the lamp on and an empty mug next to him. He was out like a light, but curled up in such a way that nearly alarmed you. Upon waking him, you could see how feeble and pale he suddenly appeared to be.
Joe confessed to you that he'd been having trouble sleeping that night, and that the intense pain in his throat only made things more difficult and unpleasant. The poor Leppard didn't even remember falling asleep after fixing himself some tea. After urging him to save his precious voice and getting him back to bed, you both slept.
Joe woke up as sick as a dog. He felt even worse than he had at 3 in the morning, and instantly knew something was wrong. One sneeze was all it took for him to spiral into illness, and one sneeze was all it took for his headache to become one with a vengeance. He was beyond exhausted from the lack of rest, and his aching throat made his appetite disappear.
You thought he'd become rather sensitive and emotional; looking sometimes as if he were lost and ready to turn on his tears. Whatever his sickness had done to his hormones, you nursed him accordingly with many hair-pets and forehead kisses.
It was the facial pain that first sent your concerns alight. Joe's grimaces and self-massages of the areas next to his nose were too frequent to ignore. It'd first happened when he came downstairs, and didn't get much further than that before he had to slowly lay down next to you and get his balance back on straight.
The second and final nail in the coffin was when you caught a glimpse of one of the tissues he left behind. One look at the wrong color of mucus was all you needed to see before you were hauling Joe towards the car.
A quick but reluctant trip to the doctor was the first step to help him, the second step being to do whatever you could to make him comfortable. The prescription (and a few other remedies) he'd been fixed up with had only begun to enter his system, and in the meantime, he needed relief.
A nice, hot bath would do the trick, you decided; clear his sinuses a bit, relax him from the tension, and make him feel loved.
You had dimmed the lights, and let a mellow tape play very softly from the counter. Joe was very appreciative of your efforts to nurse him back to health, even if he appeared weak or grumpy (or couldn't speak as much). As soon as he had stripped down and lay back against you, you felt him relax in the water. Your arms wrapped around him from behind, your hands gently moving back and forth on his chest. His head tilted back on your collarbone, and his mouth hung open to breathe around his congested airways. It made him seem so small and helpless; the opposite of his usual bouncing, healthy self.
Joe seemed to only sink into you more and more as you pet him into a blissful state. The throbbing of his head against your skin lessened more and more, his body going limp and loose in the soothing bathwater.
Sleep came to Joe much easier than you thought it would (thanks to the medication, no doubt). He finally seemed comfortable and free from pain for the first time after a very long day.
Him slipping into slumber reassured you more than anything else had, and the soft snoring that came from him signified he'd found some peaceful relief at last.

Routinely sleeping less than six or seven hours a night demolishes your immune system, more than doubling your risk of cancer. Insufficient sleep is a key lifestyle factor determining whether or not you will develop Alzheimer’s disease. Inadequate sleep—even moderate reductions for just one week—disrupts blood sugar levels so profoundly that you would be classified as pre-diabetic. Short sleeping increases the likelihood of your coronary arteries becoming blocked and brittle, setting you on a path toward cardiovascular disease, stroke, and congestive heart failure. Fitting Charlotte Brontë’s prophetic wisdom that “a ruffled mind makes a restless pillow,” sleep disruption further contributes to all major psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, and suicidality.
--
Too little sleep swells concentrations of a hormone that makes you feel hungry while suppressing a companion hormone that otherwise signals food satisfaction. Despite being full, you still want to eat more. It’s a proven recipe for weight gain in sleep-deficient adults and children alike.
--
imagine the birth of your first child.
At the hospital, the doctor enters the room and says, “Congratulations, it’s a healthy baby boy. We’ve completed all of the preliminary tests and everything looks good.” She smiles reassuringly and starts walking toward the door. However, before exiting the room she turns around and says, “There is just one thing. From this moment forth, and for the rest of your child’s entire life, he will repeatedly and routinely lapse into a state of apparent coma. It might even resemble death at times. And while his body lies still his mind will often be filled with stunning, bizarre hallucinations. This state will consume one-third of his life and I have absolutely no idea why he’ll do it, or what it is for. Good luck!”
--
Sleep enriches a diversity of functions, including our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions and choices. Benevolently servicing our psychological health, sleep recalibrates our emotional brain circuits, allowing us to navigate next-day social and psychological challenges with cool-headed composure.
--
Dreaming provides a unique suite of benefits to all species fortunate enough to experience it, humans included. Among these gifts are a consoling neurochemical bath that mollifies painful memories and a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge, inspiring creativity.
--
Most unfortunately, owls are more chronically sleep-deprived, having to wake up with the larks, but not being able to fall asleep until far later in the evening. Owls are thus often forced to burn the proverbial candle at both ends.
--
Melatonin is the voice of the timing official that says “Runners, on your mark,” and then fires the starting pistol that triggers the race. That timing official (melatonin) governs when the race (sleep) begins, but does not participate in the race. In this analogy, the sprinters themselves are other brain regions and processes that actively generate sleep. Melatonin corrals these sleep-generating regions of the brain to the starting line of bedtime. Melatonin simply provides the official instruction to commence the event of sleep, but does not participate in the sleep race itself.
--
For every day you are in a different time zone, your suprachiasmatic nucleus can only readjust by about one hour. It therefore took me about eight days to readjust to London time after having been in San Francisco, since London is eight hours ahead of San Francisco.
--
When shut off from any outside world influences, our natural circadian rhythm is innately longer than one day—about twenty-four hours and fifteen minutes.
--
Your twenty-four-hour circadian rhythm is the first of the two factors determining wake and sleep. The second is sleep pressure.
At this very moment, a chemical called adenosine is building up in your brain. It will continue to increase in concentration with every waking minute that elapses. The longer you are awake, the more adenosine will accumulate. Think of adenosine as a chemical barometer that continuously registers the amount of elapsed time since you woke up this morning.
--
Before bed, you diligently set your alarm for 6:00 a.m. Miraculously, however, you woke up at 5:58 a.m., unassisted, right before the alarm. Your brain, it seems, is still capable of logging time with quite remarkable precision while asleep.
--
REM sleep, in which brain activity was almost identical to that when we are awake, was intimately connected to the experience we call dreaming, and is often described as dream sleep.
--
The cerebral war between the two is won and lost every ninety minutes, ruled first by NREM sleep, followed by the comeback of REM sleep.
--
REM sleep ushers you into a preposterous theater wherein you are treated to a bizarre, highly associative carnival of autobiographical themes. When it comes to information processing, think of the wake state principally as reception (experiencing and constantly learning the world around you), NREM sleep as reflection (storing and strengthening those raw ingredients of new facts and skills), and REM sleep as integration (interconnecting these raw ingredients with each other, with all past experiences, and, in doing so, building an ever more accurate model of how the world works, including innovative insights and problem-solving abilities).
--
We’d be carried to bed, slumbering and unaware, by those older siblings or parents who could stay awake. The reason is not simply that children need more sleep than their older siblings or parents, but also that the circadian rhythm of a young child runs on an earlier schedule. Children therefore become sleepy earlier and wake up earlier than their adult parents. Adolescent teenagers, however, have a different circadian rhythm from their young siblings. During puberty, the timing of the suprachiasmatic nucleus is shifted progressively forward: a change that is common across all adolescents, irrespective of culture or geography. So far forward, in fact, it passes even the timing of their adult parents.
--
As a nine-year-old, the circadian rhythm would have the child asleep by around nine p.m., driven in part by the rising tide of melatonin at this time in children. By the time that same individual has reached sixteen years of age, their circadian rhythm has undergone a dramatic shift forward in its cycling phase. The rising tide of melatonin, and the instruction of darkness and sleep, is many hours away. As a consequence, the sixteen-year-old will usually have no interest in sleeping at nine p.m. Instead, peak wakefulness is usually still in play at that hour. By the time the parents are getting tired, as their circadian rhythms take a downturn and melatonin release instructs sleep—perhaps around ten or eleven p.m., their teenager can still be wide awake. A few more hours must pass before the circadian rhythm of a teenage brain begins to shut down alertness and allow for easy, sound sleep to begin.
--
If this remains perplexing to parents, a different way to frame and perhaps appreciate the mismatch is this: asking your teenage son or daughter to go to bed and fall asleep at ten p.m. is the circadian equivalent of asking you, their parent, to go to sleep at seven or eight p.m.
--
Furthermore, asking that same teenager to wake up at seven the next morning and function with intellect, grace, and good mood is the equivalent of asking you, their parent, to do the same at four or five a.m.
--
There was once an education policy in the US known as “No child left behind.” Based on scientific evidence, a new policy has rightly been suggested by my colleague Dr. Mary Carskadon: “No child needs caffeine.”
--
As you enter your fourth decade of life, there is a palpable reduction in the electrical quantity and quality of that deep NREM sleep. You obtain fewer hours of deep sleep, and those deep NREM brainwaves become smaller, less powerful, and fewer in number. Passing into your mid- and late forties, age will have stripped you of 60 to 70 percent of the deep sleep you were enjoying as a young teenager. By the time you reach seventy years old, you will have lost 80 to 90 percent of your youthful deep sleep.
--
The older we get, the more frequently we wake up throughout the night. There are many causes, including interacting medications and diseases, but chief among them is a weakened bladder. Older adults therefore visit the bathroom more frequently at night. Reducing fluid intake in the mid- and late evening can help, but it is not a cure-all. Due
--
... sleep efficiency, defined as the percent of time you were asleep while in bed. If you spent eight hours in bed, and slept for all eight of those hours, your sleep efficiency would be 100 percent. If you slept just four of those eight hours, your sleep efficiency would be 50 percent. As healthy teenagers, we enjoyed a sleep efficiency of about 95 percent. As a reference anchor, most sleep doctors consider good-quality sleep to involve a sleep efficiency of 90 percent or above. By the time we reach our eighties, sleep efficiency has often dropped below 70 or 80 percent; 70 to 80 percent may sound reasonable until you realize that, within an eight-hour period in bed, it means you will spend as much as one to one and a half hours awake.
--
In sharp contrast to adolescents, seniors commonly experience a regression in sleep timing, leading to earlier and earlier bedtimes. The cause is an earlier evening release and peak of melatonin as we get older, instructing an earlier start time for sleep. Restaurants in retirement communities have long known of this age-related shift in bedtime preference, epitomized (and accommodated) by the “early-bird special.”
--
But what seems like an innocent doze has a damaging consequence. The early-evening snooze will jettison precious sleep pressure, clearing away the sleepiness power of adenosine that had been steadily building throughout the day. Several hours later, when that older individual gets into bed and tries to fall asleep, they may not have enough sleep pressure to fall asleep quickly, or stay asleep as easily.
--
Older adults who want to shift their bedtimes to a later hour should get bright-light exposure in the late-afternoon hours. I am not, however, suggesting that older adults stop exercising in the morning. Exercise can help solidify good sleep, especially in the elderly. Instead, I advise two modifications for seniors. First, wear sunglasses during morning exercise outdoors. This will reduce the influence of morning light being sent to your suprachiasmatic clock that would otherwise keep you on an early-to-rise schedule. Second, go back outside in the late afternoon for sunlight exposure, but this time do not wear sunglasses. Make sure to wear sun protection of some sort, such as a hat, but leave the sunglasses at home. Plentiful later-afternoon daylight will help delay the evening release of melatonin, helping push the timing of sleep to a later hour. Older

AMAZING BREAKTHROUGH! Scientists have discovered a revolutionary new treatment that makes you live longer. It enhances your memory and makes you more creative. It makes you look more attractive. It keeps you slim and lowers food cravings. It protects you from cancer and dementia. It wards off colds and the flu. It lowers your risk of heart attacks and stroke, not to mention diabetes. You’ll even feel happier, less depressed, and less anxious. Are you interested?
--
Sleep is the universal health care provider: whatever the physical or mental ailment, sleep has a prescription it can dispense.
--
Sleep before learning refreshes our ability to initially make new memories. It does so each and every night. While we are awake, the brain is constantly acquiring and absorbing novel information (intentionally or otherwise).
--
The second benefit of sleep for memory comes after learning, one that effectively clicks the “save” button on those newly created files. In doing so, sleep protects newly acquired information, affording immunity against forgetting: an operation called consolidation.
--
We had observed a real-estate transaction that takes place each night when we sleep. Fitting the notion of a long-wave radio signal that carries information across large geographical distances, the slow brainwaves of deep NREM had served as a courier service, transporting memory packets from a temporary storage hold (hippocampus) to a more secure, permanent home (the cortex). In doing so, sleep had helped future-proof those memories.
--
your brain will continue to improve skill memories in the absence of any further practice. It is really quite magical. Yet, that delayed, “offline” learning occurs exclusively across a period of sleep, and not across equivalent time periods spent awake, regardless of whether the time awake or time asleep comes first. Practice does not make perfect. It is practice, followed by a night of sleep, that leads to perfection.
--
The 100-meter sprint superstar Usain Bolt has, on many occasions, taken naps in the hours before breaking the world record, and before Olympic finals in which he won gold. Our own studies support his wisdom: daytime naps that contain sufficient numbers of sleep spindles also offer significant motor skill memory improvement, together with a restoring benefit on perceived energy and reduced muscle fatigue.
--
A final benefit of sleep for memory is arguably the most remarkable of all: creativity. Sleep provides a nighttime theater in which your brain
--
a momentary lapse in concentration, called a microsleep.
--
chronically sleep restricted, defined as getting less than seven hours of sleep a night on a routine basis.
-
During a microsleep, your brain becomes blind to the outside world for a brief moment—and not just the visual domain, but in all channels of perception. Most of the time you have no awareness of the event. More problematic is that your decisive control of motor actions, such as those necessary for operating a steering wheel or a brake pedal, will momentarily cease. As a result, you don’t need to fall asleep for ten to fifteen seconds to die while driving. Two seconds will do it. A two-second microsleep at 30 mph with a modest angle of drift can result in your vehicle transitioning entirely from one lane to the next. This includes into oncoming traffic. Should this happen
--
Don’t take naps after 3 p.m.
--
Sleep experts recommend that, if you have problems falling asleep, you should get an hour of exposure to morning sunlight and turn down the lights before bedtime.

amelia nicolette never intended to be a mother. she was freshly 21, inches from a moment that could launch her career in the fashion industry, and she hadn’t been in love or even interested in the idea since she was seventeen. so when a one night stand with a wealthy older man, left her with morning sickness and an odd appetite for two, she was less than thrilled.
he was even less thrilled, insisting that she terminate the pregnancy. i’ll drive you, he’d said in a hushed tone. only then did she see the tan line wrapped around his ring finger. a married man. a one night stand. and a complete bastard . amelia decided, then and there, to carry to term and then put the baby up for adoption.
until may 1st at 3AM on the dot when the most obnoxious scream split through the air. a baby, just slightly too small, kicking and screaming relentlessly was born in manhattan. a baby who wouldn’t shut up until she was placed in the arms of her mother, where she fell quiet and calm and she slept.
amelia nicolette never intended to fall in love, but holding her tiny baby girl, she knew then and there that she was a goner. caroline, as a song that sounded like joy played from a radio at the nurse’s station. estelle, for the stars. nicolette, the only family name she’d ever need.
for three years, it was just the two of them in a new york penthouse, and amelia learned quickly that she was good at being a mother. but that didn’t change her free-spirited nature or the way her heart had a tendency to yearn for more. she had the resources, and caroline was old enough — . . . and she’d been sketching for years, sitting on top of a portfolio that piled a mile high.
along comes nanny, maggie, and thus began the life she’d lead for the rest of her childhood. mom spent a lot of time at work, building a fashion brand that went international by the time caroline was 6. because of this, she was gone more often than not, leaving caroline to grow up under the watchful eye of a nanny.
but she called every night. made it home for every big holiday, every recital, every birthday. in the summers, caroline would spend her time split between visiting her mother, visiting odette, and visiting a beach house in victoria. there was a certain lack of permanence that caused her to be adaptable, allowed her to be comfortable with change and give into the whims of a free spirit like her mother’s.
but people filtered in and out, came and went, and on the flip side of the same coin, there was a sense of detachment , a fear of getting too close to people who would move out or move on.
despite this, caroline never found herself to be lonely. she was a friendly little thing with bright eyes and a sparkling curiosity, picking up hobbies instead of toys, but never quite being exceptional at any of them. she made friends with doormen and caused problems for the people behind the desk. she became good, early on, at keeping herself busy, making her own fun – . . . all things that have very much carried into adulthood.
she was lucky, and she’s fully aware of it which is why, from a young age, she always did her best to find ways to give that luck to people who seemed to need it.
things had a tendency to be tumultuous, what with her mother coming and going and her very best friend being in and out of the hospital, but she tried to go with the flow as best as she could. things were good but never truly exceptional.
until she met jude. he’d been in the same children’s wing as odette, and they’d known each other for a little bit before caroline met him. the three of them were inseparable, at first, simply best friends. but as they got older, feelings shifted and two friends became more than that.
our girl was in love for the very first time. and it was sweet and gentle and everything a first love is supposed to be. over time, that love grew, just as they did, and it was visible to anyone with eyes that they were in love. for two years, it was good, he was good.
and then he wasn’t. despite two years of remission and a healthy life, he fell ill again. there was nothing to do but stand by and watch as six months passed by, far too quickly, and he slipped away into nothing. ultimately passing away just a week before his 20th birthday.
caroline didn’t allow herself to feel it, for a while, lingering in the denial stage of grief for far too long. new york felt empty without him, without odette, without her mother, and it didn’t take much for her to pack her things and join her mother overseas, taking a gap year from school and focusing on herself, on her photography.
she spent a lot of time with a press pass around her neck. fashion shows and fashion shoots. major events and sports games. concerts and festivals. but there was one thing she loved more than anything else, and that was capturing the off-guard joy of life in candids of strangers on the street or in the crowds of bars and concerts. she found her own style, her own way of storytelling through a lens, and slowly but surely she began to heal.
still, there was no way around the way her heart felt a little heavier, a little darker, and how smiles from strangers at the other end of the bar made her stomach churn. she developed an aversion to new relationships of any sort, anything deeper than surface level becoming a bit too close for comfort.
and while life traveling was fun, she missed having a sense of home, so she went to where the only other person who felt like home was, finding herself moving into a house with odette in victoria.
she’s been around for a couple of months, coming out of a gap year and looking to finish her degree in the spring. victoria, for now, is home.
these days she’s a little bit more cynical. a little bit less likely to let people too close. a little bit lost but also who isn’t when they’re 21

For some this pandemic has made many people very motivated about their Health and well-being and has propelled a lot of people to get healthy and in-shape. My bro is an example of this. He had a health scare back in Thanksgiving of 2019 and since the pandemic started he got himself a home gym and started working his way to the shape that he is now. I can truly say he is in the best shape of his life.
For others, such as myself, this pandemic has really made me realize how utterly helpless and useless I am. If you have been following my blog you would know all about my life struggle. Well, this pandemic just made me see how utterly useless I am. My health hasn’t gotten better. In fact, after taking two dose of the COVID19 vaccine, Each time, I had huge adverse reactions. Having all the negative reactions listed by all and in addition amplifing my own health issues and pains. In particular, my right quadrant abdominal/ovarian/intestinal pains that seems to radiate from the front to the back. These days it seems to include the whole front intestines as well as amplifing my lower back pains. I am starting to be concern that it may not be so simple. I am starting to question whether I have inflamed intestines or worse, tumor or cancer in my intestines or a busted appendix. Would that be possible? Beside my ovarian cyst, what else could be causing me all this torture and pain. How can one cyst cause all this problem? It has to be more to the story. Is there?
Literally in tears 😭 from the pain, lack of sleep, lack of peace... I said to my mom and grandma that I can’t take this torture anymore and that it be better if God lessened my suffering and take my life sooner than later. Upon hearing that, my mom lashed out and said I caused all this suffering on my own because I am stubborn and that I did this to myself starting from my college days to my time living alone in Queens during my internship and beyond. That my lack of sleep and my intense lifestyle over the years caused my own downfall. Could she had been right? Did I cause this to myself. I had suffered my whole life with this. Starting from age 9 until my first diagnosis of PCOS in my early 20s to Now in my late 30s, it seems the problem and pain just keep on escalating to a point of no repair. How do I repair this damage. Mom and gramps thinks I need to change my sleep habits, sleep more at night time and wake up early in day time and exercise more. Lose weight and strengthen myself like my bro did. If it’s only that Easy. In a full month, if I am lucky, I only feel well, truly well ... one week in the four weeks. It’s that bad and sad.
Then my mom and gramps started telling me about their own struggles/pain and their own menstrual struggles during their young adult life. Listening to it, it was like we three were competiting to see whom had the worser life and the worser pain. It seems all three of us had it bad. Three generations of pain and suffering. One generation after the next. It seems they had lived longer than me and endure more than me and from their story, their pain far exceeded mine. Is that possible? I am at the point of pain that I just want God to take me back to heaven now. They told me, they had it worse and even in their struggles they had not prayed for early death. So they looked at me... especially my grandma and said, you are the youngest amongst us and have lived the less, how can you hope for death when you should be hoping for long lasting life. In Chinese she said, men (humans) should pray for life and survival and not for death. Then grandma said, when at the age that she is now (late 80s/early 90s), she has not once pray for death but for continue life. She said life is short and one must walk the road and path and God decides when our time will come. Basically, my mom and grandma is telling me, I have no business hoping for death when I have so much life to live at 37 and it’s up to me to make my health better. To start each day and strengthen my own body. Cause in the end no one can save me except for myself.
They are telling me that I need to look after myself because no one else will. Then mom said, with my health, no man would want to be with me. Who wants that burden. She is right about that and I have long known that. That’s why I never expected anyone to fall in love with me, to want to be with me, nor do I want anyone to bear my burden. It’s my own. Only someone whom truly loves me beyond measure would sacrifice to take care of me and be with me. I don’t think In this world that person exist. Everyone is selfish in their own way. I truly wish someone like that would come along. But I doubt it. Nor do I want nor need to burden anyone else that doesn’t want to be burden.
In short, I will try my best to make myself semi healthy if not fully healthy. My grandma is right, I have no business asking for death. It’s not my time. When it is my time, God will let me know. If you know my story, you would know, many times, it seemed like it was my time as I was in dangerous situations, but God saved me each and every time. I guess it wasn’t my time yet. Maybe I haven’t suffered enough. Maybe I haven’t learned enough. Maybe I haven’t done all that God needed me to do or see. Maybe it’s not my time yet. When it’s my time, I guess I will know. Until then, I guess I need to live, persevere and not give up hope. Not give up on this life that Dima tells me I need to hold onto.
I pray God to give me the courage to face and battle this pain and this suffering. I pray that my angels look after me and soften my burden and pain. I pray that God bring and gives me mercy. I pray that I can become the strong person that everyone thinks that I am. Afterall, I am an empathetic person and as such I can feel others pains and suffering. I can see through others emotions, facades and lies... it’s a gift and a curse, but I can empathize with almost any one and can walk through their shoes.
I just wish, someone out there can empathize with me and Walk a day in my shoes and understand exactly how I feel and provide me some type of comfort. I wish one day, I can get the same feeling from someone, the way I make others feel. This Aura, Dima call it... I wish I can receive it too.

In the case of tumors, these waves break down tissue and nutrients, and increase blood supply to the tumor.

So the weekend has ended – and it’s already Tuesday. Boy oh boy are they moving at light speed again now I’m gainfully employed.
If you blink then you miss them!
However they probably pass by at such a frantic pace because I’m doing all I can to make absolutely sure that they’re crammed with fun things – which in my case usually means spending time with people I care about and doing lots of exercise.
Saturday was just such a day – and after taking my now customary kick in the man globes at Slimming World (where for no good reason this week I put on not one but two pounds) we headed out to a local hotel for a wonderful afternoon and evening celebrating the 50th birthday of a good friend.
We’ve known eachother for literally decades now and I’m proud to say that he’s a mate.
This isn’t just because we share some of the same interests (we do – check out his flipping awesome cake in the above pic) but because he’s a genuinely solid and dependable guy with a sound moral compass who’s also been with me (along with his wife) every step of the way as I crawled my way back to health over the last few years.
When I was incapable of climbing up a ladder to pull ivy off my wall and out of my guttering he brought his one round, clambered up it and did the job for me.
He did this not once – but many times – and it was made all the more poignant when I realised he doesn’t like heights.
It’s people like this that you have to look after your relationships with in life. They keep you grounded, remind you why it’s important to be a good person and demonstrate how it makes others feel when you reach out to help just because it’s the right thing to do.
Now I’m fitter I try to pitch in whenever I can to repay his favours – and I hope by now he knows that he can ask me for any kind of help and I’m there.
On Saturday though I was just enjoying his hospitality (plus maybe a little too much cake) and a lot of boogies to some great 70’s and 80’s music.
For the longest time as a teenager (and adult) I felt incapable of enjoying events like this (whoever they were for) without being completely smashed, and even when I was small enough (back in the early 90’s) to spend any length of time on the dance floor I had to have some form of lubricant flowing through my blood stream to make it happen.
These days I don’t care because I just dance and enjoy myself.
I imagine most onlookers simply wonder if I suffer with epilepsy or am a recovering stroke victim.
On the bright side if they do I’m sure the memories of my ‘special’ moves on the dancefloor will cause them to donate money to sympathetic charities when an appropriate collection box is placed under their noses.
I’m therefore doing my bit for good causes and equal opportunities whenever I step out and throw some shapes.
Rollicking about with gay abandon isn’t always a great idea though – and when I got into the car to drive home I realised that (whilst helping Angie to pack away the boxes of books and hifi bars at the end of my SW group) I’d managed to sprain my wrist.
I could barely change gear!
The pain (although very slow to arrive initially) appears to be persistent now – and for days now I’ve been unable to put weight on it or go swimming.
This morning (Tuesday) I gave the pool a go with very little success – and after a few painful lengths had to admit I couldn’t grip the side to turn, that each stroke hurt, and I could barely climb up the ladder to get out.
Looks like the only option is to keep going with the Ibuprofen gel and tiger balm (which my brother introduced me to in Starbucks on Sunday.)
It’s rather good, makes things all warm and tingly and takes your mind off the strain with it’s frankly delicious scent.
If my wrist doesn’t recover at least it’s delightful bouquet will make the task of chewing my lower arm off a little more palatable.
My brother’s taste in drinks does not appear to be quite so refined as his taste in embrocation however – and when we met at Starbucks he decided in the queue that he would try their new ‘Golden Honey Macchiato’.
Admittedly the picture on the board made it look great – however the reality was far grimmer, because not only was it a lurid dayglow yellow colour (it contains saffron) but it looked like someone had just sneezed on it when the (optional) honey was added.
Needless to say, after a few exploratory sips (by all around the table) a number of grimaces and a lot of funny faces later the rather sorry looking cup of yellow froth was left for the next occupant of the table to dispose of.
I hate waste but I’m not sorry I didn’t drink it.
Not only did it taste like ass but it was probably wasn’t very healthy as a dietary choice either.
Tellingly the Starbucks site has no nutritional information on it’s website about this drink (at least none that I can find) which leads me to believe that it’s not going to fall under the category of a Slimming World ‘healthy extra’.
My black coffee was precisely 2 kcal – yet this sugary monstrosity (or ‘crime against coffee’ as my sister in law called it) probably had a couple of hundred in it.
I’m going to have to be super careful this week too.
If I can’t swim my usual distance my food intake has to be lower and that’s a problem because I’m used to a certain portion size (namely large).
I’ve never had to stop at 250m before and it really peeved me when I was forced to get out of the pool early.
On the plus side it cheered me up to see my partner in crime continue to power back and forth in the lanes working on her own milestones.
Yesterday she even got out of bed and went to swim on her own!
This may not seem strange to those that don’t know her, but there’s a massive change in the mornings now that she’s really getting into her swimming – and frankly I’m saving a fortune on dynamite because I no longer have to leave a lit stick under her pillow to propel her upright as I creep off to the loo.
She’s bounding out of bed at the moment like a Labrador puppy chasing 20 tennis balls.
Her swimming (since she started putting her head under water during breaststroke) has improved in LEAPS AND BOUNDS and she’s almost as fast as I am now.
The only thing that’s different that I can see is that she’s slightly slower on the turns – but her stamina is fabulous and bit by bit she’s catching up.
This morning we appeared to be neck and neck and it just goes to show that if you put your mind to something you can achieve great things.
Together.
You can also achieve great things together.
Sure – there’s nothing that either of us couldn’t achieve alone, and I’d be swimming whether we’d met eachother or not.
I’d have probably also found a way of sorting out the ivy on my back wall when I was bigger – but then there’s the absolute joy of human relationships that makes everything in life better.
We’re not meant to be separated from friends or partners – and the natural predisposition of a successful human is to be around other like minded humans. It works with Slimming World and it works with life.
Anyway – time to walk to work. It’s not good to be late!!!
Davey
Boogie nights and tiger balm So the weekend has ended - and it's already Tuesday. Boy oh boy are they moving at light speed again now I'm gainfully employed.

Master Fitness Instructor Who Lost 60 Pounds After Partying Too Hard Gives Advice On Losing Weight And Making Changes
Master Fitness Instructor Who Lost 60 Pounds After Partying Too Hard Gives Advice On Losing Weight And Making Changes http://bit.ly/2nG7mPh

It has been about 13 months since I started making radical changes to my lifestyle in order to lose weight and get healthier. Flashback to late Summer 2018 and I was the heaviest I’d ever been in my life, I was having daily hypertension headaches because I was eating unhealthy, my doctor told me I had high blood pressure and needed to get healthy, and I’d just found out I was going to be a dad. Change was needed.
I’ve always thrived on the ‘strength in numbers’ style of exercise with the peer pressure and accountability pushing me on the in the class. A friend told me about CycleBar and how locals got their first class for free so I checked it out and I was hooked almost instantly. CycleBar is an indoor cycling class with a mixture of sprints, climbs, push-ups, ‘tap backs’, arm exercises, and a brief bit of meditation. It’s all done in a dark room with mirrored walls, club lights, and loud ass music. I love it.
Last October, I started ramping up my fitness and went on to lose 40-pounds between October 2018 and March 2019 by doing 4-7 indoor cycling classes a week and getting my portion control in order. Along this fitness journey of mine, I came across Jesse Alexander (@ja__tapback22) who is a Master Instructor at CycleBar. He’s based out of NYC/NJ but also gets to travel the nation and teach master classes at their over 200 locations throughout the U.S.
I’ll be honest, when someone tells me “you have to take this class, this person is AMAZING” I immediately assume that person’s full of shit and probably way too into things like horoscopes and astrology but I was blown away by his enthusiasm for exercise and his motivational. It was infectious. So when I received an email a while back asking if I wanted to interview him about fitness my interest was piqued.

Jesse reached 230 pounds and was looking quite ‘puffy’ due to too much late-night snacking, drinking, and partying. He’s now 44-years-old, has lost more than 60 pounds, and he’s in the best shape of his life (picture above). I asked him a series of questions about how he stays fit, what’s the best clothing for men to work out in, how to preserve that athletic apparel so it doesn’t get worn out in a few weeks, and how he helps clients take it to the next level.
Cass: When did you know you wanted to lose weight? What was the first step you took in getting healthy? And something I’ve been wondering myself, when did you realize you’d reached a point in life where you were healthy?
Jesse Alexander: For me, it was never an issue of not liking what I saw in the mirror. I was always a confident guy. I think the biggest thing is you have to like yourself before you set out on a weight loss journey. If you do it out of self-hatred you aren’t going to be happier when the weight comes off. I always tell the story of being out to Chinese food with my father, and over an egg roll he said to me I had “gotten puffy”. My lifestyle wasn’t great – I was out partying a lot, eating whatever, not in a consistent routine.
I knew it was time to make a change, not because I didn’t like myself, but because it was time to get healthier. I cut out things like soda, eating 2 breakfast sandwiches a day (yes I did that), and started indoor cycling. Finding SoulCycle was my first indoor cycling class and a true game-changer for me. I had never before been a part of that kind of community experience.
I was quickly addicted and having a fitness routine combined with small changes in my diet the weight came off. Eventually, I auditioned, got rejected, auditioned again and became a founding instructor for FlyWheel. My fitness routine changed again when I found HIIT classes and strength training. Today I feel I’m in the best shape of my life and look better than I ever did when I was younger.

Cass: As someone who burns a ton of calories every day but needs to stay fully energized, could you take me through what a typical Monday-Friday diet might look like? Does it differ from the weekends in any way?
Jesse Alexander: I teach 10 classes a week in addition to my own daily workouts so eating throughout the day is a priority to make sure I stay fueled. Breakfast is usually protein pancakes, or eggs with avocado toast. I’m on the go a lot so I’ll try to get a protein shake or two in throughout the day. I’ll try to grab whole foods for lunch that includes greens and protein.
I get home late from work but I’ll always cook so I’m not just eating whatever’s around – usually I’ll make some form of protein like burgers, steak or chicken and something green on the side. Since my schedule isn’t the typical Mon-Fri work week, I tend to eat pretty similarly all week long – I go for an 80/20 mindset daily instead of eating well through the week and letting loose on weekends. I try not to deprive myself too much – I’m going to have pizza with my kids if they want to go get pizza.
Cass: A lot of people start exercising after reaching that invisible ‘I can’t believe I’ve hit this weight’ number that we all have in our heads. It’s different for everyone. Then they hit the gym and expect to see results overnight. The ones that stick with it are always happy they do because they’re lighter, healthier, stronger.
As an instructor, do you notice when clients hit this invisible barrier of self-confidence and health? What are some ways to keep people motivated to exercise in those early days before they start seeing the weight loss results and body changes to stop guys from losing interest?
Jesse Alexander: As an indoor cycling instructor, a lot of milestones I see my clients hit have nothing to do with weight loss. Of course they start to look and feel a lot better and we will always praise and notice that but I try to also recognize the smaller moments that have more to do with them gaining the confidence they didn’t have before.
The moments like moving from the back corner of the room to a front-row bike, hitting a personal goal of a number they’ve never sprinted to before, and especially gaining the endurance to stay out of the saddle at faster speeds for longer which is generally difficult for beginners. Even wanting to take pictures with other clients or being more involved in the community is a huge step forward.

Cass: There seems to be a day when every serious gym rat ditches the sleeves and starts wearing tank tops to the gym whether it be for cardio or weight lifting. I’m a Sleeves Guy
. In fact, I’d prefer to workout in a collared tennis or golf shirt made from smart fabrics if I can.
Each guy is unique and this is an issue the fitness/athleticwear industry seems to grapple with. When you look at the athleisure industry for ladies, there are very clear frontrunners on which brands are dominating the market. For guys, the best options are usually shopping online or hitting a discount store and buying workout clothes that we know will last a few months before you can’t clean them anymore.
Do you have advice on the best athletic apparel for a guy who does cardio every day if not several times a day? What tips do you have for getting the most life out of this clothing when it’s constantly getting hit with sweat? When should a guy know it’s time to toss away his favorite gym shit because its lifespan has passed?
Jesse Alexander: My two favorite brands that consistently deliver great quality are Lululemon and Nike. These materials recover better from intense workouts and are consistently good quality for the price. In terms of getting the most life out of clothing, I try not to let my sweaty clothes sit in sweat bags after a workout.
Hang them to dry out before you wash them and use a good quality detergent made for athletic wear (I like Tide Sport). Another tip is to add plain white vinegar to your wash cycle – this absorbs odors. If I notice a shirt isn’t smelling clean even after a wash or two, then I know it’s time for it to go.
Cass: I love food. I love eating food. I love all cuisines and I’m not the type of person who can eat the same thing every single day. I recently lost 40-pounds from doing 6-7 days a week at CycleBar but have hit this plateau and can’t lose the 10-15 more I’d like to.
What sort of advice would you give someone like myself looking to hit that next gear? And what sort of advice would you give to someone who has hit their target weight? Do they maintain the same daily routine that got them there or is a shift in lifestyle needed to maintain?
Jesse Alexander: Indoor cycling was the biggest game-changer for me when I lost the weight I needed to, but consistent weight training put me over the edge to see the final goals I wanted to come to life. CycleBar is incredible for cardio and doing it almost every day will definitely help maintain and continue to lose weight but adding in strength training will help you build muscle and continue to burn fat as well.
If you’ve hit your target weight my advice would be to continue doing what you’re doing but adding in cross-training keeps your body guessing. I think a shift in lifestyle is definitely the key – you aren’t just going back to old habits once you’ve hit your goals, you’re now a new version of you.
Also, rest! People underestimate how important rest days are to weight loss and building muscle. Your body needs to recover to perform efficiently. Add in an extra rest day and see what happens!
Cass: For any aspiring instructors out there, how do you develop the lung strength to speak constantly throughout a workout? I know people who are in immaculate shape but can’t hold a conversation on a jog or they’d be winded. What are some tips to develop that lung strength to be able to lead a group while working out?
Jesse Alexander: This truly takes building vocal endurance which takes time and practice. Newer instructors build their stamina talking and riding and it gets easier – a huge game-changer is the perch on the bike! Instructors shouldn’t be crushing their ride like a rider does. Stop pedaling so you can efficiently look, talk and coach your riders – plus you’ll get your breath back too. When I came back from my honeymoon, I was out of shape from not teaching for weeks and this forced me to develop this new style of coaching while perching and being off-bike more. It really upped my game and forced me to connect in a newer way to my riders.

1987: THE “BAD” ALBUM AND
MICHAEL JACKSON ALONE AT
THE TOP . MICHAEL JACKSON : The Other
Side Of Midnight . (4 weeks ago) “While medias acclaim the 30 years of the
BAD ALBUM today, we remember very well
that it wasn’t like that in 1987.
Michael Jackson had to earn media respect, been beyond reproach, for his fantastic work. (As always).
Since January 1984, the world awaited the successor of “Thriller”. But month after month became year after year and that damn album was pushed back to a date “TBN” (to be nominated) and Michael loquacity matched the Neanderthal man, so, Media was “forced” scribbling soap opera stuff. Then the usual litany: the oxygen tank, the llama, the boa, Liz Taylor, the mask, the aesthetic surgery, the Elephant Man bones he wanted to buy at the London Museum.
Tabloids criticized him for refusing to license
the Beatles to the Beastie Boys and slammed him for exploiting another Beatles song licensed to Nike; well, all this sort of thing… “Professional” editorialists of that time printed the same rumours: “This guy is clearly a nutcase! He has animals at home and a boa under his buffalo skin bed and a chimpanzee flipping over the fridge in the kitchen.
Is he mad, is he not?” What else’s…ah yes!
"The weirdo prefers to be in the company of
Liz Taylor’s rather than socialize with others of his own age. And to complete the picture, he decided not to release any album before having an irreproachable product to offer to his public… Pfft… A sort of toddler (black…) who does what he pleases…” And then what else? “He has no girlfriend. And WOW ! He believes in God!” Trivial scandal ! All media stigmatized these as “abominations”… But what was so awful and abominable? When – after “Thriller”- a journalist asked Quincy Jones how long it would have taken to release a new album he answered: “Twenty years if it necessary. It will be the end of a trilogy and for me, the trilogy is a fundamental thing. The third step must always be very different from the previous two. Therefore, it
will create a surprise by changing style … we
had already planned it”. Nobody, in any case, would have wanted to be in Michael Jackson “moccasins”, with such weight, such historical responsibility to assume (no matter what could have happened, nobody would have ever repro to his producer Quincy Jones). So, in 1985 – when the “Victory” drama tour ended – Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones got into the studio to start preparing, to the world, the successor of Thriller.” AT THIS POINT, WE MUST CALL ON OUR HELP WITH THE CHRONOLOGY OF FACTS. "The music industry was pretty hectic those days and the release of BAD suffered many delays (NOT due to MJ and his production,as modern “legends” tells us ) but to external problems that kept coming up against the release. For those who look back on the 80s as a great music decade, we can’t stress how wrong you are. For every great song, there were a thousand audio craps which made up the mainstream. It doesn’t look like anyone’s bothered to upload many of them to the internet. At that time, pop music was still a good business but the audience tastes were rapidly changing due to the emergence of new music genres in the international stage creating a healthy competition in terms of international ranking. New band like Guns n’ Roses, R.E.M, Bon Jovi, U2 and many others were defining the end of the 80s, launching a new music scene which exploded in the 90s. And it’s hard to believe now, but MTV was awesome back then. Its rock shows and “alternative” shows were simply gorgeous. A band like Nirvana appeared on Top of the Pops and attracted a legion of teen fans. Pop artists such as Janet Jackson, Madona, Whitney Huston, Prince, George Michael ... were experimenting new sounds to keep up with the times. And Michael Jackson , with them, leading . So, while Michael in 1985 composed and recorded with Lionel Richie “We Are The World at the Westlake Studio, West Hollywood, Prince released “Around The World In a Day” and, in 1986, a new album (Under the Cherry Red Moon) and the homonym movie, which both resulted in a flop. Michael Jackson, under the guidance of Quincy Jones, kept recording at the Westlake Studios. And CBS begin to inquire, push and pressure for a new album. But MJ was a busy guy and was spending his time between recording studio and movie set. In fact, in 1986, the 3D science fiction film “Captain EO”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola (who came up with the name “Captain EO” from EOS, the Greek goddess of dawn), reached the public. Two new MJ songs appeared in the film. The first was an early mix of “Another Part of Me” and “We are Here to Change the World” (which was not officially released until 2004 as part of “Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection”). In September 1986, Quincy Jones contacted the Run-DMC that was on tour in Paris because Michael wanted to work with them. They had “Walk This Way” number one in the US since fifteen weeks. Their comment was: ” We hesitated”... Actually, they didn’t hesitate at all ! They ran to Westlake Studios and meet with Michael and Quincy but they could not get in tune with their rap – something, according to Quincy Jones – was missing from their lyrics. Quince told them to try to rap with more sophistication on it but, again, they could get anything together and then they left. In November 1986 Martin Scorsese shoots, with Michael Jackson, the short film for “BAD”. It was filmed in Brooklyn’s Hoyt Schermerhorn station. Despite the profuse literature describing MJ delaying the release of the album to get a product that surpass the sales of “Thriller”, news of that time give different pieces of information, reporting the delay of the release due to Musical Industry intrigues for power and marketing and not for the “abominable” Michael Jackson research of perfection- para-mania. In an article on “Rock This Town” (September 1986), Philippe Manoeuvre describes, in a semi-serious form, an anecdote that actually took place in 1986 and early 1987.“ December 1986 CBS called “Strike” on Michael Jackson: the album was finished and ready but CBS did not want it! What happened? It happened that Bruce Springsteen – against all odd – authorized the publication of a box with five discs and other amenities of his live concerts recording. If CBS was going to release during the same month Bruce and Michael it would have placed a big dilemma”. Here you can read few old billboard screenshot related to music recording industry games on November / December 1986

Found an old Coldcut interview!
Did this interview on the occasion of Ninja Tune’s 20th birthday in 2010 - it was originally published on the now-defunct eMusic editorial site, and I dug it out because I’ve been working with Ninja recently, in particular talking about their social and political engagement...
Ninja Tune is an institution. It seems quite peculiar to think that a label that has always operated like its namesakes, making unexpected moves in the shadows, circumventing usual music industry mechanisms, could have become so established – but twenty years on from its inception, there it is: a bona fide British musical institution. And at the heart of it, still, are the label's founders and self-styled “funky John Peels on four turntables”, Matt Black and Jonathan Moore, better known as Coldcut.
Sitting in the teeming offices/studios that Ninja occupies in an unassuming south London street, Matt and Jon personify the label's always-different-always-the-same identity. Despite all they've achieved, they are still, as Jon puts it, the “middle class boys who liked to get stoned and have a party” who fell in love with London's pre-acid house warehouse party scene of the mid 80s. The droll Jon is still every inch the rare groove digging soulboy, in flat cap and Prada trainers – while Matt retains the long-haired anarchist professor look he has rocked since his earliest days of becoming obsessed with sampling and recording technology.
Everything that Coldcut and Ninja Tune would come to represent was there in that party scene. The attitude and techniques of hip-hop, a psychedelic sense of mischief and adventure, and above all a revelling in what happens when London's cultures collide. “It was just a bunch of next generation kids,” says Matt, “of all races and classes, who simply wanted to get together, have a party and swap jeans” (that last pun on “genes”/”jeans” is typical of the multilayered wordplay that appears thoughout Ninja's history). And having accumulated around them musical mavericks from Roots Manuva to Toddla T, Cinematic Orchestra to grime lynchpin Jammer, it's clear that they still believe in this ethos to their very bones.
On being Ninja:
Jon: It was born of discontent and wilfulness I think. We'd started a label – Ahead Of Our Time – and hadn't really got any idea then; we signed that up to another independent, which got taken over by a major, thus finding ourselves part of a much larger machine which we didn't feel that happy with. They did a lot of things that were good for our career, but equally a lot of things that weren't, and it was difficult. Then in '89, '90, we went off on a tour of Japan with Norman Cook in his Beats International incarnation, something like 'London Nights', in these chain nightclubs in department stores. We'd had hits at this point, been on Top Of The Pops, been in Smash Hits, and we had had [uncomfortable look] stylists at certain points, but we just weren't comfortable. But Japan was such an amazing cultural shift – enjoyable, hard work and quite bonkers, and we both got into the ninja vibe. I watched old black & white 1960s Japanese ninja programmes with the sound off, which was interesting because without the distraction of the noises you just see more of the construction and the cracks and the sleight-of-hand that goes on behind the TV magic. And it just reminded me and Matt a bit of us, a lot of what we did was sleight-of-hand and smoke and mirrors and flashing lights. Because that is what nightclubs are too!
Matt: Also the ninja has this semi-serious, semi-cartoon image in Japan. And to us this was a new archetype, something really fresh; Japan is well different and you get a blast from high-intensity sensory input, and from the people as well. So we adopted that archetype, that bit of cultural symbolism. Of course, it was just a good name, and a good image at first, but there was more; we can bolt on the justifications for why we're like ninjas later. It was a good bit of marketing, a good symbol which we could enjoy together, a good badge to stick on the spaceship that we were building to escape from the music industry con and back to the underground. Or that's one truth, anyway: the other truth is that we are totally ninja.
On continuity:
Matt: I think you can trace a pretty convincing thread from our first days in the warehouse party and rare groove scene, and even back before that. When we were schoolboys and students there was really healthy, culture-blending British music: A Certain Ratio, Rip, Rig & Panic, The Pop Group, Dennis Bovell, Throbbing Gristle and before that The Sex Pistols, and Daniel Miller, reading about him and being at school, building a synthesiser with my mates...
Jon: And when we started going out and I started DJing, everything was thrown in: hip-hop, of course, but rockabilly, go-go, early house, early acid through funk, sould, African, Latin jazz – I think the only things that didn't get played were country and heavy metal... unless it had a break in it or was a cover version of a soul song.
Matt: We bless our lucky stars that the UK, while it's shit in many ways, is amazing for this musical cross-fertilisations – and that we've managed to grow up and make a career of just that. That's what Ninja Tune is: it's a London label, it wouldn't be possible anywhere else, it's what London's about. And whether it's Cinematic Orchestra, or Mr Scruff, or The Bug, even [mystical glam-rocker] Pop Levi, the same themes are still being brought together in what we do: hip-hop, oddballs, UK music, a huge amount of dub technique, psychedelia... and toys. And rebellion – setting ourselves up in opposition to the establishment because it's fun and it needs to be done.
On inadvertently inventing trip-hop:
Jon: The early DJ Food and DJ Tools compilations were done with an idea of having something that would sell regularly. It was catalogue.
Matt: But the name [DJ Food] was because as DJs who like to mix, we needed instrumental tracks that had breaks in and the right noises to scratch and were steady BPM to mix with. The term “trip-hop” was a sort of post-fix, invented by journalists, which gave it an identity. And it was only later that we realised that we'd unconsciously given up trying to make American rap records and done something better by bringing together samples with dub techniques and rare groove attitude, the qualities that London gave us, to make a kind of UK hip-hop without words. And because it was the time of rave and house music, it became this ecstasy comedown music, and obviously a smokers' soundtrack.
Jon: But later on it became this lifestyle, bar culture music.
Matt: Yeah but that was those Kruder & Dorfmeister guys and Thievery Corporation – you can't lay that one on us!
Jon: And it was to do with the change in licensing laws: this bar music thing took over as councils realised they could give late licenses to bars and get people away from the superclubs or illegal parties. And that brought in a whole new culture, it introduced a lot of people going out on a Saturday night in Huddersfield or wherever to something like Groove Armada, which they wouldn't have heard otherwise.
On escaping trip-hop:
Matt: So it got to the point where that was what Ninja Tune was known for too, although we put out a huge range of stuff, people thought of us as this “trip-hop label”. And perhaps some of our lot didn't do enough to escape that: people did rely on the template we'd developed with Coldcut and DJ Food, and I did find that frustrating; I'd expected the lads to be a bit more out there, to not rely on Daddy's wallet so much!
Jon: Anything that becomes a yoke, becomes a heavy weight on your shoulders, well – you just need to [adopts bumpkin voice] lay that burrrrden down!
Matt: It wasn't just the downtempo that became formulaic. With IDM and glitch music, you can get plugins to do that for you – and we invented that, we invented the “Coldcutter”, which was a way to produce fucked-up beats a la Aphex and Squarepusher. Someone commented on an IDM forum that “these glitch plugins are the end of IDM”, and I replied “well, in that case it wasn't that intelligent in the first place, was it, if one plugin can kill it off? Where were the actual ideas??” It's OK [that these sounds lose their novelty] though, we're not sitting here going “oh it was better in the old days” – fuck that. Things change, they move along, ideas come up, that energy gets harvested and commodified, there's no point in gnashing one's teeth about that – you just go on with getting on with what you're interested in, which in our case is exploration and recklessness that's kept us fresh to this day.
On staying relevant and staying angry:
Matt: Grime people like Wiley and Jammer do express a certain anger, but not enough. The Bug and Amon Tobin express anger without a doubt, but I wonder where is the Crass of the 21st century? Is everything so perfect now that we don't need to make any noise any more, or is the conclusion that everyone is just so fucking tranqed-out that they don't have the energy to do anything because the system's got them hooked up to some toxic apathy trip with sweet sugary pap fed to them. Youth should and must resist and see what's gone wrong with previous systems – tradition can be great, but when it fossilises and loses any energy for change it's very dangerous. It's death, in fact.
Jon: And that means we need good artists. That sort of drive [to change things] is what makes them good artists, those people who have more character and are more driven, we tend to attract them and they attract us. Even Toddla T, he's a classic Ninja party artist, the sort we haven't had for a while, and he keeps the forward drive of what we do.
Matt: Ninja Tune could definitely be more of a 'party political broadcast', the party side has definitely come up, but I would like the political side to be better represented.
Jon: It's even more important now that everybody wants to be fucking middle-class. David Cameron says he's middle-class! If that's middle-class I don't want to be it. Let's create our own class. I want another one, please.
Matt: The balance to strike is that Ninja can be a bit too serious, it's seen as a bit too blokey and chin-smokey... oops, Freudian slip there! A nice portmanteau word that, “chin-smokey”. But that's shifted, and we're a lot harder to define now. Next step is get more female artists!

The #1 Ridiculous Diet Myth Pushed By 95% Of Doctors AND "Experts" That Is Keeping You From The Body Of Your Dreams
This refers to the myth that just "eating healthy" and substituting good choices for bad choices is all you need to do to lose weight.
How often do you hear "have brown rice instead of white rice" or "eat chicken breast instead of lean beef" or "just eat organic foods and you'll lose weight"?
I call B.S.
I'd love to know how this "expert" expects Americans to lose weight eating brown rice instead of white rice when the caloric load is nearly IDENTICAL.
Or how eating chicken breast is any different than lean beef when the caloric load is nearly IDENTICAL.
Or how eating organic cereal is better than eating regular cereal when the caloric load is nearly IDENTICAL. (Note: in the case of cereals, as you'll learn later, neither are good from a longevity perspective.)
You get the point.
Calories are numero uno when we're talking weight loss (with carb/fat/protein assortment & food choices being close behind). With food substitution and eating healthy, and any other similar nonsense trumpeted in the media, the dieter is NOT monitoring intake.
And truth be told he/she has no idea what his intake should even be because none of these "experts" have helped him/her how to figure it out. They just went on talking about healthy foods and not differentiating the weight loss side from the wellness/longevity/everything else side.
The reality is, research definitely does show tremendous benefits in reducing "bad carbs, fats, and protein"...in favor of "good carbs, fats, and protein". But a greater percentage of these benefits are on the wellness/longevity side. For the weight loss side of the equation, healthy foods are important, but NOT all the time, and especially not if trying to eat them 24/7 is going to throw us off our diet.
You see, by trying to combine "weight loss" and "wellness/longevity/everything else" 100% of the time, we're cooking up a recipe for guaranteed failure, in addition to stress, misery, tons of confusion, and an alarming, rapidly growing condition known as orthorexia nervosa (obsessive dieting practices, especially in regards to eliminating certain foods or food groups completely).
And in my honest, but accurate, opinion, it's this "all or nothing" approach to weight loss (egged on by media nonsense) that is quickly destroying the American population, and making us heavier and sicker than ever before.
It's even more pressing because by going "all or nothing" and being more likely to fail, we stay overweight and don't receive the plethora of other benefits associated with weight loss.
By "other benefits", I'm referring to the fact that a shockingly large percentage of health problems get better or disappear completely with weight loss.
Obesity is the direct or indirect cause of almost all major modern diseases (including heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, Alzheimer's, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, stroke, etc.)
Knowing this is a blessing in disguise. Before worrying ourselves to death over diseases that we have, or may have one day, we now know exactly where we need to focus our efforts.
Weight loss is the #1 goal. All the positive internal and external changes due to the weight loss will travel further down the chain and likely reduce the risk of most other diseases.
And this weight loss can be accomplished by eating well 80-85% of the time and having "cheat" foods the rest of the time.
In doing this, we reap the majority of health benefits from eating clean, healthy foods to nourish our body and mind AND we lose weight AND we still feel satisfied with occasional indulgences in our favorite foods.
On a personal note, I watched the "weight loss = much more than just weight loss" dynamic unfold right in front of me.
I had always thought my chronic shoulder bursitis and debilitating lower back pain would need surgery or "years of physical therapy" (the latter of which I did, for 5 years, only to see zero progress). I literally thought it would never improve, and I had all but given up on it.
This all changed after I lost about 40 pounds (of my total 76 pounds) and inadvertently took a huge strain off my body and mind.
This tremendous decrease in pressure on my joints, coupled with proper nutrition, a few supplements and some activity ended up doing MUCH more than just making me look and feel better. It actually got rid of my chronic shoulder and back pain, which gave me a whole new lease on life. (On a deeper note: I had suffered from years of chronic depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem, which had seemed insurmountable in the past. I realized later on that a lot of this had to do with my poor self-image via obesity from a young age. This literally disappeared once I got in shape and started taking better care of myself.)
So, if you're suffering from any sort of anxiety, depression, or self-esteem issues, sit tight because in my experience, weight loss affects MUCH more than just how you look in the mirror.
In any case, now that we've started to rip apart some myths about weight loss, let's talk about the factors that run the show.
It essentially comes down to lifestyle choices (which, for beginners should be very taken slowly and easily. More on this later.)
Specifically, it boils down to the "Big Three of Weight Loss":
#1: Smart Nutrition
#2: Natural Movement
#3: Stress and Toxin Management
Now that's all simple in theory right?
Eat healthy, exercise, and don't smoke, right?
Well...sorta. It's unfortunately not that simple.
You see, for starters, our beliefs around real "nutrition" and eating "right" are completely fed up, for lack of a better phrase.
Instead of studying the lifestyle habits of people who've "done it right" for thousands of years (while staying free from obesity and illness)...what do we do?
Well, we (i.e. most Western societies) follow the advice of big corporations, mass media, and uninformed doctors. Most of whom, mind you, have a financial stake in recommending certain nutrition methods and medicines to us.
And with all our advances in modern science, we're still ending up with uncontrollable obesity, early death, and major illnesses, some of which include:
Cancers
Heart Disease
Alzheimer's
Parkinson's
ADD and ADHD
Diabetes
We're stuck with these horrific diseases, while many societies have NEVER even *heard* of them. (Remember how some cultures don't even have a word for "cancer" in their vocabulary?)
----
When I was starting out (75+ pounds heavier than I am today), I had NO idea how to eat right. I was completely lost amidst different advice coming from every other website, blog, or magazine article.
And you know what? It sucked! I didn't know what was right for me, and I kept going from plan to plan...NEVER seeing any real progress.
Even worse, I hated myself for it.
I saw people all around me, in good shape, or I saw people losing weight easily, and I was sick to my stomach. I did what was supposed to be right but just couldn't get it. And it left me thinking that I just wasn't "good enough" to be skinny too.
It was far from a happy existence, to say the least.
Have you ever felt that way? Doing everything "right" but then beating yourself up for not seeing results?
Thankfully, this all changed when I stumbled upon the amazing secret of "real food" nutrition (and the traditional cultures who'd been following it).
The best part? It helped me finally cut through the "fog" and B.S. that everyone and their mother yaps about.
Let's get into it.

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1 : if you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in , and what would it be about ? A1 : I would have to say that she would be very good in a female empowerment movie as she overcomes the sexual expectations of the way that she dresses to kick ass. But as a ginran lover, she would also be great in a romantic movie, perhaps one where she thinks him dead for years but in the end of the movie she is reunited with him and they live happily ever after. Q2 : what would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : Probably something to the upbeat tracks but the lyrics would be much darker than what the music would lend the listener to believe (think Halsey or Melanie Martinez) Q3 : why did you start writing this character ? A3 : Because SOMEBODY *cough*Jackie*cough* dragged me into her. I was playing a villain character before this one. In fact, in about 90% of my previous roleplays they have been evil kings, manslayers, and most recently Nutcracker from Tokyo Ghoul. ANYONE ELSE SEE A TREND??? But Jackie was searching for a Rangiku and I made a joke that I could make one for her and who knew that a year+ later I would still be here rping her. Q4 : what first attracted you to this character ? A4 : To be honest, I was always kind of indifferent towards her. Being a blonde and having blue eyes and fairly large breasts myself, I thought of her as just another overly-sexualized female character in a manga there only for the sexual humor. It wasn’t until I started really researching her to write her that I realized how wrong I was. Her duality in dealing with people, with her problems, and her inability to let people in was intriguing to me and still to this day she surprises me, which makes it fun to play her. Q5 : describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. A5 : She doesn’t seem to realize just how many people care for her. It took her what, 80% of the manga, more than that? before she was able to communicate with her captain. She is seen suffering by herself rather than just going to talk to someone, and that’s frustrating as her roleplayer. She’s surprisingly bad at communicating with other people. Q6 : what do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : I would much rather hide my feelings in favor of making another feel better. No matter how shitty a day I’m having, if I hear that one of my friends is having a worse one, I will forego my own mental health to listen to their problems (see Rangiku staying at Orihime’s place). I also have the ability to get free alcohol and favors from boys with the right...persuasions (lolol...am I kidding? who knows~). Q7 : how does your muse feel about you ? A7 : She wishes I would stop making painful AUs with Jackie and focus on getting her a stable home with Gin. And she also wishes I would stop writing such painful and deep threads and let her revert to having fun again (not gonna happen Bl). Q8 : what characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? A8 : Everyone is interesting! But it’s the ones that thrust her outside of her comfort zone that are really interesting! But, let’s be truthful, anyone willing to put up with my rollercoaster of a muse earns a big gold star and a 90 degree bow from me. Q9 : what gives you inspiration to write your muse ? A9 : Music, especially current pop hits or super sad, slow songs. Epic music or movie sound tracks are also really good, depending on what scene I’m writing. Q10 : how long did this take you to complete ? A10 : Holy shit it’s been an hour, fck me.

Mozambique: Where HIV Patients Who Have Nowhere to Go Go | Future Planet
At 44 years old, Pauline (*) knew nothing of any crisis. Her four children were healthy and she had a job as a domestic servant at the former governor's daughter's home. It was a demanding life, at six thirty in the morning already in charge of passing the dust and preparing breakfast for others who were not her children, but on her side of Mozambique lives are born like this. “I was fine. He could do anything, however heavy it was. I was just a little magriña. I would wear a dress and a few days later I would have to fix it because it no longer worked for me ”.
On the morning of 2007, when everything stopped being the way it had always been, Pauline got up before the sun, around four, to get 20 kilos of millet ready before going to work. When his shift was over, he would go to the health center to ask about that constant weight loss. “There was some xima —A traditional dish made from corn flour — from the previous day, so the girl would have something to eat even if I came back late. ” In Mozambique one can know the beginning of things, but rarely their end. That afternoon, a nurse looked at his eyes, the ganglia, the shrunken skin.
“You are not feeling well. She is infected with HIV, ”said the doctor after submitting her to medical examinations.
Pauline denied in duplicate. She did not use drugs, nor had there been any other men since her husband's death. Those, they said in massive government campaigns to raise awareness of a population reluctant at the time to be tested, were the most common forms of infection. She was neither in pain nor had she lost an iota of strength. He had only lost 15 kilos.
For not arguing with someone wearing a white coat, Pauline, a mother of four and a sister of 15 in the Gaza border province, took what the doctor told her. 12 hours later, he was back. “I started having diarrhea and feeling bad. I couldn't even stand up. I had to crawl up there. ” Neighbors watched her crawl. No one came to help her. The doctors made him a plaque. I had a major spill.
Mozambique has increased coverage of antiretroviral treatments from 12% to 54% of the affected population between 2010 and 2017 and reduced deaths by 46%
“You have advanced HIV. Your body has little to fight with, so it has scrambled. ”
His CD4 count, the white blood cells that fight infection, hovered around 80 per cubic millimeter. The recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) at that time was to start treatment when it was less than 300 – today it is urged to treat all patients regardless of their CD4 or when it is below 500 in areas with access limited to antiretroviral treatments. Pauline was immediately booked at the Alto-Maé Reference Center (CRAM). One of those places that those with no place to go go to.
The 90-90-90 margins
From the first hour, the streets of the Cidade de Cimento ooze life. There are queues of university students at the panzinhos. Queues of vehicles to turn the avenue. Plastic queues and memory on the buses and vans that take and bring to Mozambique from Canico. Sooner or later, the queues always pass through the Alto Mae.
The health center is the hub of the city's health system. A succession of sober buildings, somewhat old but always spotless, where nothing is superfluous. Much less space. The waiting rooms are crowded and the health system is not over the top: the advances in health, summarized in the increase in life expectancy in 10 years, up to 58, since 2000, are amazing, but still insufficient. There is less than one bed available for every 1,000 inhabitants and one doctor for every 5,000.
CRAM laboratory technicians performing an HIV test. P. L. O.
One of them, Dr. Gil, is caring for a young man in the last of the buildings of the healthcare complex. Although the architectural geography is identical, this is a different place. CRAM is the last HIV station in Mozambique. “Here we serve the most vulnerable groups, that part of the forgotten population that does not receive any type of assistance,” explains Ana Gabriela Gutierrez, one of the heads of the center launched by Doctors Without Borders in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. .
The healthcare model implemented by the Government following the UNAIDS guidelines 90-90-90 —90% of those infected know their diagnosis, 90% of them receive treatment and 90% of those who receive it reach an undetectable viral load— It has been a success capable of increasing the coverage of antiretroviral treatments from 12% to 54% of the affected population between 2010 and 2017 and of reducing deaths related to the disease by 46%, but it has its margins. Drug users and people with HIV advancing, those with resistance to treatment, Kaposi's sarcoma or opportunistic ailments such as tuberculosis, which is the disease that most kills HIV patients in Mozambique. Those are the CRAM patients.
Currently, the center assists more than 2,500 people, some with up to 10 years of follow-up. Every year, they add an average of 800 new patients. “Some”, says Dr. Gutiérrez, “arrive without symptoms, not even fever, because their bodies are no longer capable of responding to the virus.” Pauline was one of them.
Worse than disease, stigma
Before facing the virus it is necessary to defeat the stigma that surrounds it. “For a long time, HIV was explained as an equation equal to death, and linked to promiscuity,” says Ana Patricia Silva, the coordinator of the MSF psychological program at CRAM.
When Pauline came HIV was still a life sentence. A reason to lose your job or a husband; to be the talk of the neighborhood. “I didn't want to tell anyone, in fact, my little daughter still doesn't know, and I told the three oldest two years ago. I wanted to remain free. Then I had a stroke of fortune: a neighbor was also in the CRAM accompanied his blind sister to receive treatment. If he talked about me, I would talk about them, “he continues. This is how Pauline got your confidant that then, given the high dropout rate, was required to enter the program. It could be a family member, a friend, or a trusted neighbor.
In just 15 days Pauline gained weight and her health improved considerably. I had to take two pills, one at 8:00 and the other at 20:00. The first hour, could not always. “In the house where I worked, you had to leave your bag at the entrance and we couldn't go back to the box office all day. If we did they thought we wanted to steal. So half the days I only took the pill at night. “
When Pauline arrived at the center, HIV was still a life sentence. A reason to lose your job or a husband; to be the talk of the neighborhood
Without knowing it, she had a relapse. Although he did not cough either, he had associated tuberculosis. “One day I fell at work. They told me to go rest. Before going back, I went through the market, but I fell again. A young woman from the neighborhood took me home. The next day I went back to work. 'Go until you recover,' they told me when I fell back down. I was taking the treatment, I was sure it couldn't be due to HIV. ”
Only 54% of the 1.8 million people with HIV in Mozambique receive antiretroviral treatment, and not all follow medical prescriptions. Some because of hunger. Others out of fear. “One of the reasons why in many cases CD4 does not go back is poverty. Here people live day by day, they cannot think about what they will eat tomorrow. Many times they are not aware of what the disease means and only go to the doctor or take the treatment when they feel bad, “emphasizes Dr. Gutiérrez. In Mai Coragem, a play that has rocked consciences in the country, a mother asks her daughter why she has become an alcoholic. “Because I couldn't count that I had HIV.” Only then does his uncle take the floor: “I am also HIV positive.”
The vast majority of families today have a member affected by the disease. That has managed to downgrade malicious comments, but it has not ended discrimination. The third time that Pauline's strength at the employers' house failed, her tray with food falling off, she was fired. The next eight months he spent by the railing, looking for the air denied by tuberculosis. “Without work, at that time I had a hard time, I hardly had anything to eat.” At home they survived on what their older children contributed. But these had a question. How had his mother been infected?
“One day I went to get the Bible and when I opened it I found the green cardboard that was given to people with HIV at that time. I showed it to my children: ‘Come, I was not with anyone. It was his father. ’ They asked me for forgiveness and I did not want to continue stirring the dead. “
This toxic masculinity is widespread in the country. Husbands who take the treatment when they consider it appropriate, but do not tell their wives. “Men have economic power and feel they are in control of the situation,” says the CRAM psychologist. “Rabies?” Pauline intervenes, “no, really what I feel sorry for. If he had told me, we would both have gone to take the treatment and he would still be alive. But since he did not speak… ”
Overcome family fear, Pauline had to defeat the virus. His CD4 had dropped back to 100 per cubic millimeter. I was vomiting and had diarrhea. After two years of treatment, something was wrong.
“You have entered into failure.”
The short answer, the long answer
CRAM has a binary soul. It has a hectic rhythm, that of survival, which is agitated with each new patient. “Early diagnosis is very important, it is what can make a difference,” explains Dr. Gutiérrez. The small laboratory built in the shadow of the main building is the heart of the project: it produces kidney, liver profiles, measures CD4, or possible infections of malaria, syphilis and hepatitis, as well as rapid tests for opportunistic infections such as cryptococcal meningitis. “It is what allows us to give a different response, to implement key treatments,” insist those responsible for MSF at the center.
In less than 24 hours, the patients who attend the CRAM are already receiving the clinical assistance they require. In urgent cases, in less than four. Rapid tests for HIV in the blood or tuberculosis in the urine (TBLAM) are decisive in saving lives today.
It is about recovering the CD4 level of patients and preventing them from dying from opportunistic diseases. “The objective”, summarizes Dr. Gutiérrez, “is that the viral load is undetectable because then it is no longer transmissible.” Achieving this requires a long-term look. A personalized follow-up to adapt to the evolution of the disease. When Pauline's initial treatment stopped working, they started a second-line combination. “I recovered very quickly, going from 200 to 800 CD4 in no time.”

Of the advancing HIV patients seen by the hospital, 60% receive this second-line treatment. 10%, third. In the absence of CRAM, the vast majority of them would have died when the initial treatment was no longer effective. Even Kaposi's sarcoma is no longer synonymous with death thanks to the chemotherapy program launched. The Government has noted the success of this model and second-line treatments for HIV patients are currently available in most public health units.
Today Pauline is a chef at a downtown restaurant. Her bosses are unaware of her status, “they still don't want anyone like that working in the kitchen”, but she has no moral concern: firstly, because, although a large part of society still doubts, the virus is not transmitted by the manipulation of foods. Second, because your viral load is no longer detectable. ‘Undetectable = untransmissible’. In fact, the CRAM viral suppression statistic is excellent: 84% in the second line; 77% in third.
With the current medication, Pauline does not have to worry about a thing. It is enough to take your treatment in the morning, before going to work. “I don't even remember that I'm sick.”

Interesting Facts About Pit Bulls: The Things You May Not Know
There are a lot of interesting facts about Pit Bulls, a dog breed that has recently become very underrated. Let’s be honest, a lot of people have a negative perception about Pit Bulls. In fact, Pit Bulls have such a bad reputation that they are completely banned in the United Kingdom!
In reality, however, they are awesome dogs! Don’t believe me? Check out this great video that illustrates a social experiment about Pit Bulls and how people perceive them (in the video, a Chihuahua is more aggressive than the Pit Bull!):
Sadly, the bad reputation that Pit Bulls have is due to humans and how we used them throughout history. Pit Bulls originate from Great Britain where in the 1200s they were specifically bred for baiting bears and bulls. That is actually how they got their name, as they would be put into a pit with a bull to fight the large animal. After the baiting of bears and bulls became illegal, Pit Bulls were turned on each other and used for illegal dog fighting.
So to help dispel the myth that PitBulls are naturally vicious dogs that should be avoided, I want to tell you about some interesting facts about the Pit Bull that you perhaps did not even know about.
Overview of the Pit Bull
Most of the time, when people talk about Pit Bulls, they are referring to the American Staffordshire Terrier – an AKC recognized breed – specifically. The American Staffordshire Terrier is strong, muscular, and stocky, with a broad head and full cheeks. Its “rose” ears (in which the top folds over and back) are sometimes cropped short. It stands 43 to 48 cm (17 to 19 inches) tall and weighs roughly 23 to 36 kg (50 to 80 pounds).
Its stiff glossy coat may occur in any colour, with or without patches of contrasting colour, and many dogs have some white on the head, throat, and chest. The American Staffordshire Terrier is affectionate, loyal, and good with children, making it an outstanding family pet. Many authorities note, however, that the breed possesses some level of aggression, especially toward other animals, and they also note that properly bred and socialized dogs do not display innate aggression against humans.
American Pit Bull Terriers, which are not a member of the American Kennel Club, were once an iconic American breed. They were American military mascots, advertising stars, and popular farm and family dogs. But when dog fighters criminally exploited the breed’s loyalty, tenacity and bold nature, the Pittie’s reputation took a hit from which it hasn’t yet recovered. Unfortunately, he comes with societal baggage. People who have Pit Bulls may face restrictions on where they can live or which homeowner’s insurance they can purchase, and there have even been large Pit Bull bans in some areas.
History of the Pit Bull
Before the early part of the 19th century, the Bulldog was bred with great care in England for the purpose of baiting bulls. The Bulldog of that day was vastly different from our present-day “sourmug.” Pictures from as late as 1870 represent the Bulldog as agile and as standing straight on his legs-his front legs in particular.
In some cases he was even possessed of a muzzle, and long rat tails were not uncommon. The Bulldog of that day, with the exception of the head, looked more like the present-day American Staffordshire Terrier than like the present-day Bulldog.
When it comes to the bull-type terrier breeds, all can agree that the common component in their makeup was the Bulldog. (Note that the Bulldog of 200 years ago was a vastly different, more ferocious creature than the lovable “sourmugs” of today.)
Argument begins when breed experts try to nail down which preexisting terrier breeds reside in the American Pit Bull Terrier’s genetic background. Some suggest that such extinct breeds as the White English Terrier and Black-and-Tan Terrier were part of the genetic mix that led to the creation of the Staffordshire Terrier, forerunner of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Some writers contend it was the white English Terrier, or the Black-and-Tan Terrier, that was used as a cross with the Bulldog to perfect the Staffordshire Terrier. It seems easier to believe that any game terrier, such as the Fox Terrier of the early 1800s, was used in this cross, since some of the foremost authorities on dogs of that time state that the Black-and-Tan and the white English Terrier were none too game, but these same authorities go on to stress the gameness of the Fox Terrier.
It is reasonable to believe that breeders who were attempting to perfect a dog that would combine the spirit and agility of the terrier with the courage and tenacity of the Bulldog, would not use a terrier that was not a game. In analyzing the three above-mentioned terriers at that time, we find that there was not a great deal of difference in body conformation, the greatest differences being in color, aggressiveness, and spirit.
In any event, it was a cross between the Bulldog and the terrier that resulted in the Staffordshire Terrier, which was originally called the Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Half and Half, and at times Pit Dog or Pit Builterrier. Later, it assumed the name in England of Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
These dogs began to find their way into America as early as 1870, where they became known as Pit Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, later American Bull Terrier, and still later as Yankee Terrier.
In 1936, they were accepted for registration in the AKC Stud Book as Staffordshire Terriers. The name of the breed was revised effective January 1, 1972 to American Staffordshire Terrier. Breeders in this country had developed a type which is heavier in weight than the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of England and the name change was to distinguish them as separate breeds.
Now, the Pit Bull is one of the most loved and respected of the bully breeds. It has appeared throughout literature and pop-culture as an icon among the bully breeds. Ownership has grown and the distribution of the American Staffordshire Terrier is widespread. You may own one.
Fun Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Pit Bulls:
The Pit Bull Is Not A Breed
Wait, what?!
Pit Bull is actually an umbrella term that refers to several different breeds. Pit bull is a type of dog, but the American pit bull terrier is a breed. Other breeds that fall under the umbrella of Pit Bull Dogs include the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American bulldog, and the Staffordshire bull terrier. All of these breeds derive from the dogs originally bred to fight in the pits in England.
These breeds are generally grouped together as Pit Bulls, as they have similar physical characteristics. They are in fact so similar that often even experts can’t tell them apart. In the US, the most common breed to be referred to as a Pit Bull is the American Pit Bull Terrier.
The American Kennel Club does not recognize the American pit bull terrier, but it does acknowledge an extremely similar breed called the Staffordshire terrier. This name distinction was created in an effort to separate the breed from its negative past.
In addition to the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, other breeds sometimes identified as Pit Bulls include the Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Japenese Tosa, Dogue de Bordeaux, and the Bulldog.
While it’s tough to estimate dog breed numbers, it’s believed that there are at least two million Pit Bulls in the United States.
Pit Bulls Are Older Than You Think
Pit bulls descend from bulldogs. Bulldogs were used as early as the 1600s for bull and bear baiting (their name descends from their use as bull baiters). In the mid-1800s, some very observant people determined such blood sports were very cruel and made bull baiting illegal.
For those who this decision was less obviously a very good one replaced bull baiting with dog fighting. To make it more entertaining, they crossbred bulldogs with terriers. The result was the animal that we know and love today.
Pit Bulls Were an Immigrant Dog
Pit bulls made their way to America on ships alongside immigrants looking for a new lease on life. Of course, early America was a tad more rustic than it is now, and survival was often a daily struggle. Because of their protective attributes, pit bulls were considered very valuable.
Pit Bulls helped their owners by protecting them. They also defended livestock from predators and intruders. The dogs abetted hunts by acting as hog catchers. Lastly, they served as companions to young children, which is the start of how they evolved into family pets. So, without pit bulls, some early American families and communities may have suffered for lack of food or protection.
Attempts Have Been Made To Rebrand Their Name
The American Pit Bull Terrier was not recognized by the American Kennel Club, who rather recognized the dogs as Staffordshire Terriers.
The AKC wasn’t the only group to attempt a rebranding. In the ’90s, San Francisco tried to change the dogs’ name to St. Francis terriers.
In 2004, the New York City Animal Care and Control tried to rename the dogs “New Yorkies.” According to director Ed Boks, “New Yorkers, like pit bulls, are sometimes perceived as a standoffish and mean breed—but are actually some of the most generous and open-hearted people I’ve ever met.” Sadly, the plan was a flop.
All this was to try and get the dogs away from the bad reputation and negative past. Sadly, these efforts failed.
Pit Bulls Are Easy to Groom
Taking care of the Pit Bull’s short, stiff coat is remarkably easy. A quick once-over with a soft bristle brush every week is usually enough to remove any dirt or other foreign matter. What’s more, a good brushing distributes skin oils throughout the coat to help keep it healthy. If an Am Staff gets into something particularly messy, a bath will probably be called for. Otherwise, bathing can wait until when and if he develops a “doggy” smell. As with all breeds, the Pit Bull‘s nails should be trimmed regularly, as overly long nails can be painful and cause the dog problems while walking and running.
Pit Bulls Inspire Art!
Sophie Gamand, a famous photographer, created a series of photographs to show off Pit Bulls’ softer side and challenge how society sees Pit Bulls.
She used the cute pups with beautiful pastel colored flowers to create amazing pictures that show how irresistibly cute these dogs really are. You can see more about the series here.
Pit Bulls Were Used As Bait
Pit Bulls were often used in bear baiting, a blood sport in which bears were publicly tortured for the “entertainment” of onlookers. After bear baiting was outlawed in England, the sport of ratting became popular. A pit was filled with rats and dogs competed to see who could kill all of them in the shortest time. Some believe that this is where the pit in Pit Bull comes from.
Pit Bulls Have Been Symbols in American Culture
American pit bull terriers may need some PR help nowadays, but there was a time when the breed was America’s favorite. Petey, the canine companion of the Little Rascals, was a pit, as well as Nipper, the RCA dog, and Tige, the Buster Brown shoe mascot.
They Have Great Temperaments
The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier scored really well on a test run by the American Temperament Test Society that tested dogs’ temperaments.
You can see the full test results here. In fact, they even outscored Golden Retrievers! Don’t believe me? Here are the results for Golden Retrievers.
Despite their reputation for fearsome dog bites, Pit Bulls aren’t considered great guard dogs by those in the know. They’re too trusting of humans, and may greet an intruder as a new friend.
They aren’t vicious creatures. This is a stereotype that is biased toward generalizing and condemning an entire breed based on the actions of a few bad people. The truth is that each dog should be evaluated by his own merits and not by his breed.
A corollary truth is that there truly are no bad dogs, only bad people. In his essay Troublemakers, Malcolm Gladwell discusses what Pit Bull stereotypes can teach us about the wrongness of racial profiling of both humans and dogs.
Pit Bull Puppies Aren’t Necessarily Better Than Adults
It’s a fact that puppies are adorable! But the thing about puppies is, well, they grow up. And as they mature, their personality develops and that’s when you really find out whether your Pit Bull is dominant or submissive with people, or whether she is aggressive toward some, none or all dogs.
Dog-intolerance and dog-aggression are traits that do not develop in some dogs until they are fully mature. It is possible that the cute little puppy you adopt who is friendly with all other dogs may not like other dogs at all later in life, even dogs she has grown up with and lived with for her entire life. Both nurture (environment) and nature (genetics) play a role in determining a dog’s mature personality.
This doesn’t mean that PitBull puppies should not be adopted, but if you want to know how big your dog will ultimately be and how she will act around humans and other animals, you may want to consider adopting an adult.
Ultimately, the decision to adopt any dog requires much thought on what is the right fit for your family, and your ability to commit to the dog for his or her lifetime.
Pit Bulls Were America’s Mascot In WW1
During World War 1, propaganda efforts hit fever pitch, with countries on both sides using propaganda extensively. One technique that was popular was to use certain dog breeds as mascots to try and convey specific characteristics that should be associated with each country.
Britain was represented by the Bulldog and Germany by the Dachshund. Guess which dog represented the US? That’s right, the Pit Bull! The Pit Bull was selected as Pit Bulls signified loyalty, bravery and determination. If you want to see more about Pit Bulls in the military, check out this article here.
The article also tells us the story about a Pit Bull called Sergeant Stubby, which was the most decorated dog of WW1. It was also the only dog to be nominated for rank and promoted to Sergeant through combat! His life was so interesting, that a movie based on his life is in the works.
Pit Bulls Don’t Have Locking Jaws
Pit Bulls do not have any special physical mechanism or enzyme that allows them to “lock” their jaws. If you compare a Pit Bull skull to a skull of any other dog breed, you can see with the naked eye that both skulls share the same characteristics and general bone structure. However, one personality trait of the Pit Bull breed is determination. Whatever Pit Bulls do, they do it with a great deal of enthusiasm, and it is this trait that can make it seem like they have a locking jaw when they bite down on something and are determined not to release it.
October is not only National Pit Bull Dogs Awareness Month, but October 28 is also National Pit Bull Awareness Day.
Wrapping Up – Pit Bulls Are Awesome Dogs!
Pit Bulls got a bad reputation, but unfairly so. Pit Bulls are in fact some of the friendliest dogs you will come across. As with any dog breed you need to train them, teach them social skills, keep them physically fit, and feed them proper dog food in order for them to be happy and healthy animals. It is our responsibility to treat them well and teach them correct behaviours.
I hope reading these facts about Pit Bulls has helped to show the more positive side of Pit Bulls and that they are not the vicious monsters that society sometimes tells us they are. Pit Bulls are in fact awesome dogs!
