Birds of paradise <333 Them being of the same bird family is important to me... (honorary mention to the snowy owl for Kristoph) (also honorable mention to the paradise crow) (but i like them having matching ribbons (and the two birds i went with are more closely related))

I originally tried giving Klav the whole fluffy back of yellow/white feathers, but (a) he looked SO over complicated (especially compared to everyone else) and (b) I realized that no other character has back feathers, anyways. so it would make sense he does not either.

The ribbon-tails are similar to Apollo and Trucy's hearts: they both inherit this feature from one of their parents. (One parent is a stephanie's astrapia, one is a lesser bird-of-paradise). (Also of note: the lesser bird-of-paradise also has two long wire plumes, if you look closely)

Tails: (Klav's is basically a ribbon-tailed astrapia's tail btw.) Because the tail is such a notable feature of these species, I'm including it, though they also come from the base of the wing (though I'll probably just draw them as essentially tails in the future), and are much shorter than they would be, were they proportional.

i got very lazy on the individual introduction sheets they're so bad 😭😭 specifically klavier pls just imagine he and his wings look better there 🙏🙏🙏 LOL i hope the other drawings make up for it !! >:3

so a couple months ago now i think? i decided on a whim to make a puppet since i figured i had enough supplies lying around to do it, which resulted in me being struck to make arguably one of the best members* of the rock-afire explosion into a marionette: looney bird!

(excuse the goofy looking puppetry, i don’t actually have any experience w/ marionettes. whoops!)

anyhow i know a couple people that have seen puppet looney were curious how i made him, so under the cut i’ll have my rambles about that!

making looney bird was super fun! so expect this section to be long because i do wanna explain everything as much as i can. i will divid this up into sections, which shall be:

body, head, & neck

face & plant/leaves

tail & wings

legs & feet

strings & control

anyhow! let me get to explaining lol

Section 1: body, head, & neck

this is where i began! i made a base for the head & body out of crayola air dry clay so i had base shapes to put the fur on top & so the puppet would have a decent little bit of weight to it. the head was just a small ball, while the body was larger & slightly more oblong. while the base & the other sculpted parts were drying, i had to color the fur i was going to use.

i only had white faux fur (2 different kinds, a soft, sort pile, & a less soft, longer pile; what i use for most of looney is the short pile) going into this project, & since this fella was made exclusively from craft materials i had lying around, i needed to find a way to color it. I attempted dying some of the fur w/ some old t-shirt dyes i had lying around, but when that didn't work i turned to my old alcohol markers to see if they worked, & they surprisingly did! really well too! (altho there are some areas that i struggled to get ink into, but overall the color isn't too too patchy)

once i had the dry clay & fur, i got to covering the bases w/ the fur! which. i did primarily by super glueing small sections of each piece of fur down, maneuvering the fabric to lay flush w/ the base & making sure to maintain the same direction of the fur, & repeating until the fur was completely attached.

the neck was simpler, i took some more of the red colored fur, folded it over into a flat tube shape, & glued either end to the head & body (still paying attention to the fur direction!) then i took some of the remaining uncolored (white) fur & made the ring of white around the base of looney's neck!

Section 2: face & plant/leaves

imo, this was the section i had the most fun w/ lol! i actually sculpted the face after making the head & body's clay bases so that they had extra time to dry. i made the entire face as a "faceplate" for easy attachment at the size i needed, plus sculpting the face as one thing allowed me to have the 3 extra bits i needed to attach looney's face feathers the best later on in the process. the face is also made of crayola air dry clay btw.

after the face was dry it was painting time! i just used some old art kit acrylic paints for all the base colors, & the eyes were possible using a nail art dotting tool. i went over looney's cheeks w/ chalk pastel dust to get the blush effect, then sealed everything in using mod podge.

now he needed his face feathers! remember how i had 2 different faux furs? well here's where the longer pile one gets used! i cut really small sections of the longer fur & trimmed them down to be just 3 little fuzzy bits essentially, then using another alcohol marker, i colored them green & glued them to the green side sections on looney's faceplate. from here, i attached looney's face to his head, then cut & pasted the surrounding small white feather sections on either side of his face & below his beak. it was after that i made the purple feathers, as those are just colored paper clippings that i glued to the back of looney's faceplate that didn't attach to his head. (picture of what i mean below)

anyhow! onto the plant on looney's head! the stem of the plant was just a jewelry wire that i twisted to make a bit thicker, then dipped in green paint to color it & smooth the twist out, then sealed w/ mod podge, & finally glues to the top of looney's head. the leaves, much like the purple feathers, are paper, but cut into leaf shapes & colored to roughly mimic looney's leaves, then they were very carefully super glued to the stem

Section 3: tail & wings

these bits were pretty simple imo, the tail is made of embroidery floss i cut & sectioned to create looney’s tail pattern, then i tied it together to create a base i could easily attach to his body. i also tried brushing it to make the individual threads smaller since i preferred the look & thought it made it look more like feathers? but either way, from there it got glued on & i moved on to the wings.

the wings are again the short pile fur i used on the body, but they were left white when i cut them, so once i got the wing shape formed i could color the sections that needed to be red & just leave the wingtips white how i wanted. the wings were 4 panels cut into a roughly triangular shape & glued together to create 2 wings

Section 4: legs & feet

the legs & feet were also relatively simple but i have never been the best at sculpting feet so i suffered just a tad. anyhow the feet are also sculpted from crayola air dry clay like other pieces, then painted & sealed the same as the faceplate.

the legs are pony beads & more embroidery floss. i used the beads to make the legs as full & patterned as i wanted & the string to make sure the legs are loose & easy to maneuver. 2 beads were glued to looney’s body & 2 to his feet, & the string was looped thru the body beads, down through the leg beads, & tied & secured to the feet beads

Section 5: strings & controls

finally! the last section!

the string is just some clear beading string. there are 4 strings, which were tied & glued to both foot beads, the base of the tail, & the base of the plant. i eyeballed the needed length for each string to keep the puppet at an upright position when held up regularly & cut them to size.

the control is just a pair of chopsticks i cut to the rough size of the puppet & glued the ends of the strings to: the head & back end strings to either side of one stick, & both feet strings to either end of the other stick.

& that was pretty much everything i had to do to make looney!! it took like. 2 days? i was very dedicated to finishing him in just a weekend. thank you to anyone who read all my extended rambles about how i made this guy!!! i appreciate it!! also please excuse any typos, i never make typos ever idk what y’all are talking about

Base design:

Base design is based off a mockingbird, his exact species category is a Mocking harpy, with the ability to shapeshift and mimic other birds

(his feathers will never lose the base inspo, even if he is mimicking other bird species, so if he was mimicking a parrot the yellow would replace the white and reg the light brown and blue the darker brown etc the yellow will have a hint of white markings but ye!)

season 7, would be a Parrot mimic, since he lived in the jungle for the most part and he did the pesky bird bit

season 8 would be a snowy owl/ender dragon mimic, cause he did a harry potter inspired build, and harry’s main pet is a snow owl and had a ender dragon baby(egg)

the life games are just dependent on his surroundings! (ex, Last life would be burrowing dessert owl, cause they lived in a dessert that session!)

He is constantly feathered,  mainly seen on his cheeks and shoulders. He will keep this feature throughout the entirety of his mimics as well as his signature ‘waffle’

he can hide his wings, tail and bird like legs to appear more human but he will never lose the feathers on his back/shoulders

Clothing:

hes clothing also serves a purpose i didn't just make his clothes revealing on purpose lol

His backless sweater, for his wings to move without hindering the movements at all, would show his upper body so I added an additional undershirt just so he isn’t practically shirtless. Both tie in the back at the back above his tail but only the under shirt ties in the back on his neck

his pants! They have long slits in the sides so he can access his pouches (his inventory basically) on the side of his legs and knives. Bird legs are difficult to make pants for so the baggy :D he also had shorts so he wouldn’t flash anyone lol it has a clip in the back that goes over his tail so he wouldn’t have to pull his tail through his pants

Watcher Nature: (Still in progress)

When he has high negative emotions his eyes will get a purple tint and will become more intense the more intense emotions he gets

While in his watcher form, he can have any amount of wings, like a seraph, and his wings get glowing eyes like the one floating above his head. He is rarely in this form but he is often overwhelmed in this form and chooses to hide from the hermits in a dark space to calm down.

(hermitcrafts security mechanics for watchers do not work on watchers already in the world. Thus would not go off if Grian is in this form, X would later add him to the exceptions list)

Shifting nature:

Grian was originally human, when evo started he was just a guy hanging out with his friends, but when he was taken by the watchers they gave him a ‘gift’, that being part harpy. The watchers fused Grian’s code with a birds, and eventually he grew traits that made him a harpy. Shapeshifting was just a oopsie trait the watchers didn't expect grian to develop

This one made me actually consider how they balance the humours beyond just a simply "they scour it out". Because sometimes a holy beast gets 'sick' and it's not necessarily related to any sort of tissue growth, it's more often a mechanical fault and because the beast is considered to be alive, he is then therefore 'sick'. So how do we deal with this? An enginesmith will make the necessary repairs, but sometimes the sickness is related to environmental conditions. The four humours are arranged on a scale like this:

A mechanical fault associated with being too hot and dry could be something like a lack of lubrication on moving machine parts. So this would be considered the reason for a production of yellow bile (excess of yellow bile, btw, was what Pantera was diagnosed with on his last outing). Whether or not the bile is literal or more symbolic depends on the case. Anyway this was the reason Pantera is associated with fire (originally, when I was designing them all) and Leun, diametrically opposite, is associated with phlegm, water, acid, etc.

But anyway, the way to fix these imbalances in hot/cold/wet/dry is to simply reduce whichever one is excessive. In practice, keeping holy beasts maintained even when they're not out on a crusade is a full time job for an army of workers, where the atmospheric conditions need to be as neutral as possible. Too wet and you've got rust, too dry and the metal fatigues, to hot and it might warp and break, too cold and the joints won't fit properly, etc etc. Although the enginesmiths view this through a lens of The Four Humours, it's also just good practice to try to keep things balanced.

Btw while they do cure an excess of blood by bleeding the holy beast, they don't make leeches big enough :'(

There are illustrated representations of dragons that are pretty traditionally dragony (typically a winged serpent with many tails representing the stinging tendrils). These are added to drawings and art as a catch-all symbol for a conscious and targeted Evil. The laity, which is very devout, is unlikely to associate dragons with resistance - dragons cause a lot of damage too, and those stinging barbs will kill you just from the trauma of the impalement before the venom even has a chance to (unless you just get grazed, in which case.. the venom will paralyse you. then kill you)

So active rebellions/civil wars/wars of succession have occurred many times. The subjugated Midaean nation/territory (depending on who you ask) rallies around their beloved Saint Lycaon, a wolf. Flags and signs depicting a wolf devouring a crocodile/a lion/whatever holy beast currently tops the hierarchy of the church would be more likely. Rebellion itself is rarely black and white and as neat as picking a symbol the church hates. It is more likely people would pick a symbol that they love. Outside of Midea, the Mezian empire might not be at its peak but it also has not given its own citizens and laity a reason to take up arms against it.

So the nerve cords inside the vertebrae are artificial, but they still perform the same physiological function as a real spinal column. They interface with a knight's dialogue. This produces an incredible amount of heat - this is why the spines are often exposed, even though that might be a point of vulnerability. The spinous processes in particular are very effective heat sinks.

But the tail? In most cases we don't need the tail, really. The spinal column ends at the base of the pelvis. The tail is cropped for most beasts on purpose - we don't need this thing dangling around and becoming entangled, and it has no machinery around it to act as replacement muscles so it couldn't move even if they wanted it to. Krokodilos's tail is the exception and it's just extremely heavy for not much pay off. That's a lot of additional engines we gotta maintain.

So the tail tends to be abandoned. The bones are kept of course but not mounted on the chassis where they're not needed. With no nerve cord running through them they don't run hot either so they won't disperse heat all that well.

Now for replacing bones... they don't. The bones that exist in the chassis are the bare minimum needed to perform the required functions - basic movement. They don't have ribs, they often don't have phalanges. A skull is there to complete the nerve cord - but all you need of that skull is the occipital bone. Nothing more.

If they break a leg, it might be repaired using screw and plate fixation. The bone may deign to knit together (enginesmiths swear that they don't allow tissue growth ever.. but sometimes you need some periosteum. Don't tell the bishops). But if it gets crushed? That's the holy beast done, scrap heap time. The majority of all holy beasts that have ever existed have already broken down and been decommissioned at the start of this story - we only have seven left (eight if you count krokodilos). Krokodilos is an unusual case because he is not dead, so they can't just hold a state funeral and add his heart engine block to the big hall of old hearts in the cathedral. He's sleeping.

But he's the exception. Take Saint Guinefort - dead as a doornail. He had a full funeral, his heart was put in the hall and his body was [redacted] like they do with all dead holy beasts. And then he was [redacted] and now our pal "Sir Victory" with the metal arm uses him as Nosewyse. Circle of life.

I think sidecar motorcycle is a pretty apt way of looking at him lmao. You don't wanna know how many people he's cooked.

Hey there! So I know I've mentioned they are similar to pterosaurs but they are not related to them at all. In fact they are cetaceans :) Later art I did of them plays up the mammal traits a bit more. Check out these nipples

However it is a fact that they are not closely related to modern cetaceans - as in, they did not evolve from modern whales and dolphins, but belong to a side branch that diverged relatively early, around the same time dragons were leaving the water for the skies. That art is quite old too, from before I kind of nailed it all down, so if I drew them now I would remove the more derived traits (i.e the single blowhole, the tail flukes, etc) and tidy it up a little. They diverged from the lineage that would become modern whales before the pelvic limbs were lost. I originally depict them having the crowbar-like claws on their feet to lever skin parasites off the dragon, but i think they are more likely to not use their feet much at all, and are more likely to use their single huge beak-like tooth to do the job instead. They cannot walk on flat surfaces.

Only insects and, specifically, winged insects :) I know it would be really cool to have various other giant arthropods but milennia ago, when they crossed into Thera for the first time, insects were the only fliers. And there is no other way to get over the mountain range quickly enough for it not to kill you. The mountain range in which the endless city sits is completely and 100% devoid of life. A journey on foot for a tiny bug would be next to impossible - they are more likely to starve or simply turn around and go back to where the food is.

The winged insects, otoh, can cross the range in a day or less, if the breeze is flowing right. And they would find plants already there in Thera - also solely wind-dispersed species from the previous time the mountains arrived and linked the world with Earth. The insects didn't really come by choice, sometimes the wind just blows the wrong way, but they definitely got lucky.

There are wingless insects in Thera today but only because they lost that trait over time (like ants or larviform female beetles). They have managed to colonise every reasonable habitat, including the sea (though the sea is not very salty) and have developed into a lot of very strange forms which might be unrecognisable to us. But a lot of them just got bigger and smarter.

This time round, in the period of time the story is set (early 1900s on earth), the mountains appeared and new animals crossed over who were not insects. Birds have become invasive in Thera, happily taking advantage of the smaller insect species who are completely unprepared for this new threat. There are also some wind-dispersed spiders hanging out now.

EDIT: oh i forgor the parasites on the flying insects that first colonised thera... yes they would have mites and horsehair worms and things of that nature

So. Ideas for the "in s6 the Mystreet characters discover the relics and use them to defeat Michael" au. Which will be dubbed the "Relics AU". Admittedly this au is based less around canon and more around my own rewrite. So some events will be played out slightly different.

Firstly, Zane is the one who found the relics. I like to think that maybe in s5 we would've seen or heard little hints about Esmund's relic calling to Zane. I like this idea that the relics can call upon new users (almost like they were made from sentient people's souls what who said that). Anyways, Zane keeps hearing a weird whispering voice/having weird dreams about opening ancient doors, having dreams with a lion (the symbol of Esmund/the Ro'meave family), etc.

It eventually culminates in the relic literally putting him into a mana trance and lulling him towards the relics location deep under Starlight. He comes across the door, touches it, and boom, door unlocked, relics sent out into the world.

Zane is of course immediately knocked out by Esmund's relic while the others go find the other users. (Garroth is there to bring Zane back to the house before they get in trouble with Starlight security).

For this au, Aphmau gets Irene's relic, Zane gets Esmund's (it was drawn by his magic and sense of ambition), Lucinda gets Menphia's relic, Travis gets Enki's, I'm thinking Ein could actually get Kulzak's relic?, and Aaron gets Shad's. (Ein would've been raised as Aphmau's brother for this au btw! They know they're brother/sister and were raised by Sylvanna)

Keep in mind, Zane and Lucinda were the only characters who previously had magic before the relics attached themselves to the cast. So that's fun.

And in s6, when they get these relics, they are able to use them to fight the Demon Warlock (who's lost his mind after being trapped in another dimension for centuries. Dude's gone a little crazy.)

I'm thinking the relics could also change the character's appearances? Like crow feathers/claws for Zane (mainly it's mana sickness while he adjusts to the relic), angel wings for Aphmau, larger horns/tail spines for Travis, fluffier fur/wolf traits and claws for Aaron, etc.

I was gonna give him more eyes but I got lazy I am gonna rant abt the watchers and stuff under the cut cause I really love my version of the watchers and have been dying to share how I view the silly eye cryptid.

Watcher rant ^^ (This wasn’t proof read btw so gl)

Sooooo Ima start off with talking abt the drawing I made, so this is watcher Grian aka Xelqua (Fun fact, Xelqua was Grians old name for his channel) and basically this would be considered their causal watcher form because DUN DUN DUNN they have a few diff types so they have a base form (so player disguises) semi-base form (player disgue + watcher features) lowest of watcher form (basically just what is shown in the peice here just less wings and eyes) their causal form (the one shown here in this piece) and thennn full form which is some creepy biblically accurate “humanoid” cyrptid creature.

There’s 5 types of watchers, low rank (usually newly turned ones) mid rank (most common one) high rank (woah your stupid for trusting these creatures this much 💀) pure watchers (blipped into existence as watchers) and then prime watchers (also blipped into existence but hold a lot more power, knowledge, wings, eyes, just rlly a lot more of everything tbh.)

The ranking system is based off skill, power, and reputation ig?? (it’s a odd one ok-) the easiest way I can explain it is it being the opposite to the feduel system so you can move up ranks you just can’t become a pure or prime watcher for obvious reasons.

Watchers usually only have 3 pairs of wings at most, pure watchers having abt 5 and prime watchers are undetermined. Their tails usually include some wings so a pure watcher might have one or two sets of wings on their tail with max for them being three and normal watchers very rarely have wings on their tails but will only have one pair if they do. (I am so not hinting at anything with this very specific thing noooo Grians wing number is soooo normal ;D)

This a bit of a odd one but they like don’t reproduce, pure watchers and prime watchers are just blipped into existence every now and again and taken care of by the previous generation of watchers and stuff.

Watchers can also be any species/hybrid so for example for example I usually base Grian off a great horned owl or rarely another owl I can’t remember the name of (I think it’s a long or short eared owl I sometimes base him off of idk) but anyway so watchers can be moth hybrids, phantoms, bats, anything but if the creature is non winged it’s eh a lot more painful to get turned because lets just say they give you wings you didn’t know you had :,)

Grians actually missing his eyes like his main eyes on his face like he has zero vision in those and usually tucks them away by covering his face with his main pair of head wings or the ones on top of his head but he wasn’t born blind it was more so a “freak accident” that made his eyes like that. He still sees tho through the rest of his watcher eyes because with his watcher type he can use more magic to hide things so he keeps his “extra” eyes out and makes them invisible and use those to see.

That’s all I have to say for now since I don’t wanna drag this post on for too long but thanks for reading this if you did lol

And of course it said LAFD in as big letters as it could fit, had reflective stripes and a high-vis yellow base colour that would horribly clash with Eddie’s copper scales.

Next to it in the shadows sat a young child; a boy, unless Buck was mistaken. He looked at them with wide eyes but he wasn’t crying and he didn’t try to run away. Then the horse leaned down, nudging something on the ground with its nose, and Buck finally saw the man on the ground.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but I was wondering if there was any fish species that your mer Dick & Bruce are based on? I know bruce is mostly monochromatic/transparent in terms of scale coloring & dick mostly is red/yellow, but I was curious if there was any IRL inspiration for their tail shapes! TYSM :)

Hiii!! You don't know how excited your ask made me! Feeling real giddy as I type this up!! 😆 Anyway, back to your question. Yes! They're both inspired by real fish species. I've taken a lot of creative freedom, but, they both are inspired by real fish, or, an amalgam of several fish.

Regarding Bruce, he's inspired by both lionfish, lionfish larva, and a leafy sea dragon.

You're right that he is kinda monochrome, all the scales on his lower body are black. His ear finning is black as well, but, he's got transparent and translucent (depends on which you look at and the lighting) appendages there as well. Like the lionfish, he has spines, and venom (like the lionfish), which hasn't come up yet, they're mostly black, but, like the leafy sea dragon as well, he's got these sort of floaty appendages on his lower body and back, like a dorsal fin (transparent/translucent depending where on the fin you look at), which are a mix of black and transparent/translucent (mostly transparent/translucent). That's why he's so glittery, and Reader keeps mentioning that as well. He's also got this light finning (idk, I don't think that's a word but I'm going to use it anyway) draping from his elbows, similar to Dick.

And Dick, the little mer. I felt so clever for this.

I was inspired by pictures of this fish right here.

This, this right here? That's a Sea Robin (😉), also known as a gurnard. 😏😏😏, felt so smart for this.

Once more, I've taken creative liberties with this, but, hey, ¯⁠\⁠⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠⁠/⁠¯. Dick has the reddish body, except brighter, more pigmented, and rather than those gorgeous pectoral fins, the green ones with blue spotting, he's got twin bright emerald green dorsal fins meeting on the ridge of his spine, like little wings. 🤗. He's got some light finning at the elbows, soft, not spines, and yellow pelvic, anal, and caudal fins, as well as the fins at his ears. That's what he looks like. 👍

So, their designs were both inspired by real fish, several different types, and, btw, I did not mind you asking! 🤗. I loved your question, and really enjoyed answering it! If you have anymore, go ahead!!
