“Polyamory In Anime” panel at ACen 2023

Over the weekend at my favorite anime convention, Anime Central (ACen), I attended a panel called, “Polyamory In Anime” by @hiriajuu-suffering​ . So I wanted to give them a signal boost and talk about my experience at the panel.

Anyone that knows my backstory will know that I was actually introduced to polyamory during a panel at an anime convention, Geek Kon 2015. “Non-monogamy in Pop Culture” is a panel that changed my life. So I toyed with the idea of doing a polyamory panel at an anime con as well. But I was skeptical about how much that would pull people in. Even though that panel at that small con was really full. I think I just figured that the world was very different in 2015 compared to now. So I ran a panel twice in the past year that has a section talking about non-monogamy in anime but focuses more on sexual orientations and gender identities portrayed. And in it I pretty much just assume by this day and age that all weebs know what polyamory is unlike me in 2015.

Hiriiajuu-suffering made a very different assumption about the anime community and I think he made the right call! He focused a lot more on the basics of polyamory and especially defining various different terms. Maybe I just have a good brain for memorizing vocabulary words because I never found polyam terms confusing but it is quite a meme that they are overwhelming. And from what I could tell, the audience was very interested in this and eager to learn. I realized that the mistaken assumption I made is that while yes a lot more people in 2023 have heard of polyamory than in 2015, most people are still newbies that just starting off and learning! I have been in my own bubble of non-monogamous weebs for so long that I kind of forgotten that most people have only heard lots of these terms in passing.

To back up these terms and different styles of polyamory, several anime titles were listed off and briefly talked about. Unsurprisingly there are a lot more negative examples of non-monogamy in anime than positive examples. But I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing since we touch upon where some of these shows went wrong and how they could have fixed themselves into more positive polyamory.

And then the shows that do show positive polyamory (which for me are Girlfriend Girlfriend and My Next Life As A Villainess) felt like so much of a triumph. I really enjoyed when we got to cite these examples. 

There were a ton of shows listed that i had heard of but never really thought of through a polyamous lens (check out my series) so that gave me ideas for future anime reviews on this blog. I never thought the list would be so long. 

If I had one gripe it would be that some of the definitions of those pesky terms and labels I personally disagreed with. So I guess I do see why people say they are so confusing after all. But they were explained well enough that I got the point being conveyed.

I think the more important part was the concepts and ideals. There was a lot of “why someone might want to be polyamorous” weaved throughout the whole panel and I think it was so good that even fully monogamous people could learn a lot of lesions from those ideals. It was really beautiful!

I wish there was more time at the end for discussion. I had a lot to say but I mostly tried to patiently wait until the end as I didn’t want to constantly be interrupting during it. And then even at the end I wanted to make sure that other people got their input in first since again I didn’t want to steal the show and already felt like I did say a decent amount during it. I was in the front row with part of my polycule so that alone felt like I was contributing to the visibility of polyamory people. Although I honestly wish my entire polycule could be at a polyamory panel at an anime convention together. New goals!

I had decided a few weeks ago that I want to take a break from running panels at all cons but this one really inspired me and got me thinking that maybe I would run a polyamory panel at a small Midwestern anime con and stay away from running at the big ones for a little bit. I don’t know, we’ll see. I am really happy that Hiriiajuu-suffering did this panel and put so much hard work into it. The community, both anime and polyamory, really need content like this.

Most Popular One-Shot: Both based on hits and kudos it’s Tony Stark’s Snuggable Murder Kitten, a very fluffy, no-angst one-shot that I’ve written in the middle of the night after almost 3 months of not being able to write anything.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Without doubt it’s The Best of You, the (as for now) second part of the JGMAR series, the Avengers part of my MCU-rewrite, and it’s previously estabilished Winteriron with endgame Stuckony. The second most popular is Still Alive, the first part of the same series, Tony and Bucky gets together during the IM1 events, so yeah. So JGMAR is definitely my most popular writing, and I’m happy about it.

Favourite Story You Wrote: Oh my goood... depends on when you ask it, really, and what aspects are we talking about? I’m usually fond of my stories. I might not like them when I post them, but when I revisit them a bit time after and re-read them, I immensely enjoy them and am proud of them. My definitely most underrated story is Of Soldiers and Wolves. Technically it’s not even just one story but NINE, because it’s a Choose Your Own Adventure deal, and you can imagine how HARD it was to weave all of those together. You have no idea how much energy and care I’ve poured into it (there are probably mistakes I missed but hopefully not many) and yet it is among the least read stories from me - probably because there is one (warned and therefore avoidable!) sad ending among the nine. The rest of the endings are either gen, Stucky, Bucky/Nat/Steve or PolyAvengers. Also Take me to the magic of the moment doesn’t get the recognition either because it’s dub-con, but not more dub-con then any arranged marriage fic. Basically, Tony and Bucky agree to do a magical ritual (and possibly sex) due to outser circumstances and they enjoy it. But because of that, it’s not as popular as it could’ve been, imho.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: I’m always nervous to post, and I’m always writing the endings last-minute when the deadline is real pressing. My betas are seriously amazing to put up with my bullshit, honestly. I was also really nervous to post E-rated stories, especially The stranger addition and Already a sinner, and I’m an overachiever, because a) those are as close to PWP as I’ll probably ever go, and b) I felt really insecure about my smut writing. Also c) they are stuckony server remixes, and I wanted the original authors to like them :)

How Do You Choose Your Titles: It varies from time to time, but god bless the Hozier lyrics title generator. And song titles. And @hiriajuu who I ask for help all the time :D

Do You Outline: I’m usually a pantser, so I have a vague outline and then the story turns to a different direction at one point or another.

Complete: 61 works on Ao3. I’m almost at 450K!!!! :D

In-Progress: Oh my god. Listen. I have a lot. I have over a dozen WIPs right now, and even more that are just ideas or summaries or vague plans/wants. On Ao3 the stories that are unfinished:  Wonder is not gone as long as you aren't either (winterironshieldpepper in the plan, endgame fix-it with AI!Tony), and Mid-youth crisis (AVAC winteriron story based on @summerpipedream‘s amazing moodboard). But in my WIP documents? I have 3 started MTH fics (for last year’s auction, I know, I know...), I have another almost-finished kinda endgame fix-it, a sharon-pov story, a modern au stucky collab with @cpt-winniethepooh, a 5+1 Bucky loves Cap story, a shrinkyclinks story, an Ugly christmas sweaters Asset-POV, a Tony-focused sequel to necromancer!Steve,.... so, a lot.

Ronan made a vague gesture, pointing at everything and nothing at once. Adam raised an eyebrow, but nodded. "Aren't you afraid that a monster gets out?" Again, he thought, but he didn't say it out loud. He didn't have to. "I'm stronger now." "I can see that." Ronan shot him a puzzled look. "You could bring me with you." Ronan didn't answer, but his smile had the hairs rising on Adam's arms, and his heart pounded in his chest as it had never before. "Why is it me here?" He asked, his mouth dry. There was a long silence, and then: "The others are at the funeral." He didn't want to ask the question, he didn't want to know the answer, but as he let out the breath he was holding, the name slipped out anyways. "Gansey?" Ronan shook his head bitterly, and Adam felt his heart stop beating for a second... and then Ronan cast his eyes down ...and it didn't start again. "So you're not that strong" He whispered hoarsely.

black: how much personal space do you like?

i think i need just a bit more personal space than a regular person when I’m out with people i’m really close with, but i compensate by spending time alone in my apartment to recuperate

hmm… entertainment (and studying/knowledge is entertaining for me, as are creative endeavors), love (all kinds), self-worth, i guess? this is a weird question, not something i really think about

oolong: where do you see yourself in five years?

financially more-or-less independent from my parents and doing my PhD… preferably living in Budapest although I love my apartment but the commute is not the best.
