May is now at an end. I was able to draw 4 hippocampi for mermay. Which is more than I’ve draw for previous years! So I’m pretty happy with them. Which is your favorite? ✨

I legit forgot I won 2nd place at a fair with this. Or that I drew this at all. All my fair art was stuck under all my other art books lol. Besides this, I think I only drew her twice

*Within a kelp forest, there appears to be some movement. A large tail appears in view before some of the kelp moves out of the way to show a hippocampi. She's blue with with a green underbelly that almost melds with the kelp surrounding her*

A hippocampus, with shifting colors of yellows, oranges, and whites, with fins like sails and a tail like a lion turned fish, appears from behind a jutting out large piece of coral. A lionfish hippocampus, either deadly or kind. Neither of which are seen often, as they are not the most seen type. The fins around the head flare as if in warning. Their fins dancing with the rays of light from above making them shine. Their fins spread to catch the light and make themselves look larger than they are. The patterns shift with the way the muscles extend and move.

Hippocampi:

Unlike in the myths, hippocampi would have a more natural color palette, color palettes vary campi to campi due to there being multiple types. As many types as there are types of fish in the world. Fin shapes, belly shapes, mane shapes, and tail shapes also vary bc of the same factor. All hippocampi have an equine head and two front legs. These legs are able to bend more than the average horse is capable of, but they cannot be on land for too long or the legs will give out and they are beached on land unable to get back to the ocean. Due to the horse head and frontal shape, they need air to breathe but can stay underwater for 2 hrs due to extremely large lungs. On land the fins that make up their “hooves” curl together to make the shape of your average horses hooves. Underwater they unfurl back into a clawed and finned shape. Usually with 4 fingers with webbing in between each.

It is impossible to measure the age chart for the hippocampi, there are to many types to do so
