Musical has gaslit people into thinking Marcia was with some rando named Trip. So let me remind you. She Was Not. Sheâs with that one guy Randy. You know. Bobâs best friend. Who helped hold Ponyboyâs head in the fountain. The guy who backed out of the rumble because he couldnât stomach any more violence. Who proved that socs could change. They were more than their environment. And he went on to became a weed-smoking peace ân love hippy with a volkswagen van.
Yeah, that Randy.
#this is not an anti musical post btw#I adore the musical#but#that was then this is now randy cameo goes hard#whoâs trip idk him#or âTerrance Dippâ as they call him now which makes even less sense#marcia wasnât dating the ensemble yâall sheâs a major character kind of gal#the outsiders#marcia the outsiders#randy the outsiders#trip the outsiders

in relation to last post but also off topic, do u think Johnny would get a kick out of Pony keeping his hair long
(the last post < for the uninitiated- itâs a post about Bryonâs role in the Dally, Mark, and Tex au, in which I drew sixteen-year-old Ponyboy w/ long hair. Meta reason why was because all the slightly older ref pics of C. Thomas Howell I could find had long hair, but the in-universe reason was that Pony was so horrified by the haircut Johnny gave him in Windrixville that he never lets it get that short again)
Oh yeah, heâd think itâs hilarious. Heâd say shit like âI really traumatized ya, huh?â
and Ponyboy would be like âOh shuddup, itâs how everyone wears it nowadays,â cos in the late 60s-70s longer hair on guys was getting popular. Ponyboy would call Johnny an âOld manâ for not knowing that lol
Steve, Two-Bit, and Curly Shepard also get a kick outta it- theyâd bully him for looking âlike a hippieâ. (Dally wants to bully him too but canât- my Dally design has long hair too lol)

ain't just hair
âAre you sure you want me to do it?â Johnny asked nervously. He shifted foot to foot behind his friend, the handle of the switchblade growing sweaty in his hand. âDarryâs better at cuttinâ hair. Iâve never done it before.â
Dally snorted, âAs if I would trust him anywhere near my head with a blade.â Dally twisted his neck to look back at him. His cold eyes thawed just enough to give Johnny a reassuring look.âIf you donât cut it, Iâm going to let it keep growinâ and Iâll look like one of them hippies.â
Johnny laughed at the image. âYouâd make a real swell lookinâ hippie.â
Dally glared at him, âDonât even joke about that, Johnnycake. Now youâre cutting my hair whether you like it or not.â
âI dunno, what if I mess it up?â A greaserâs hair was the most important thing to them, being allowed to touch Dallyâs hair was a privilege, let alone being able to cut it. And if he messed it up, he didnât think Dally would ever forgive him.
âIâll skin you,â Dally told him with no real bite. When Johnny just tensed, Dally turned around in the chair to face him, âThen Iâll have to let Darry at me with his razor.â Dallas wasnât soft, but with Johnny, he thawed just a little. âChill out, you got steady hands.â
Dally turned around, presenting Johnny with his hair. Swallowing nervously, Johnny lifted the switchblade up. He tugged a strand of Dallyâs hair taught. And started to saw through it with the blade. It was freshly sharpened and cut through the hair easily. As the first wisps of hair fell to the ground, Johnny let his shoulders fall.Â
It was almost meditative. Not many people got to touch Dally like this, to change how he looked. The trust sat heavily on Johnnyâs shoulders, but it was a comfortable weight.
Johnny cut a few more strands before Dally spoke up. âFirst time I got arrested in New York, the cops shaved my head. They thought it would make me stop being a greaser.â Dally laughed humorlessly. âOnly made me more of one. It toughened me up. The next time I got caught by the cops, I didnât let them take me far, didnât let them near my hair.âÂ
Johnny was thankful he didnât have to look Dally in the eyes. He imagined neither of them wanted to share vulnerable eye contact at that moment. Quiet moments like this with Darry were rare, but treasured.âMy mom did the same thing.â
Dally was still, like stone. âI didnât know that.â
âNo one does, not even Ponyboy,â Johnny admitted. âExcept you now. It was before I knew you. Iâd just met Darry and Soda andâŚâ Johnny swallowed thickly. âMy parents didnât like them one bit, they didnât like greasers, still donât. So my mom held me down and shaved my head until it was only fuzz.â Johnny let more of Dallyâs hair fall between his fingers. âI ran to Mrs. Curtis and she just held me until I stopped crying. She didnât tell no one what happened, Mr. Curtis gave me an old hat of Darryâs to wear until it got long again.â
Dally was silent for a long moment, but Johnny wasnât nervous. Dally might seem rough, but he never was with Johnny, not when he was baring his heart like this. Johnny could hear the smirk in Dallyâs voice as he said, âAnd now you got the best hair of all of us.â
Johnny snorted, âSodaâll beat your ass if he heard you say that.â
âI would beat him easily,â Dally said with a buzz of his lips. âBut we all know Iâm right.â
As more and more of Dallyâs hair collected on the floor, Johnny found comfort in silence. Unlike him and Ponyboy, he and Dally didnât ever just sit in silence. But Johnny decided it was nice. Having Dally nearby made him feel comfortable. Not many people could say that, probably three in the whole world.Â
Dallyâs gruff nature offered safety to those he cared about. He was a snarling guard dog, ready to rip anyone apart who threatened the people he loved. More often than not, it was Johnny. When they were younger, Mr. Curtis always called him Dallyâs little shadow. It was still true.
âIâm sorry the cops did that to you,â Johnny told him quietly. He gently brushed the fallen hair off of Dallyâs shoulders.
He watched Dally force himself not to tense up. âMe too. But it made me toughen up, fight back even harder. No oneâs cut my hair since then, not unless I let them.â Not unless I trust them .
Johnny didnât know how to respond to that. Dally wasnât like this, he wasnât vulnerable. If he drew attention to it, Dally was likely to draw back into himself. Thankfully, Dally said something instead. âIâm sorry your ma did that to you too.âÂ
âItâs more than just hair,â Johnny said softly.Â
âIt is.â Dally agreed. âWearing our hair like this tells everyone that we donât care what they think. It sets us apart. Whatâs a greaser without their hair?â
âI ainât ever wanna know,â Johnny told him softly.Â
âYou never will,â Dally growled, an oath. Johnny looked over the hair again, running his fingers across the strands to make sure they were the same length. He didnât know if thatâs how you did it with Dallyâs kind of hair, but thatâs how Darry cut Sodaâs.Â
âItâs done.â Johnny closed the switchblade and handed it to Dally. The older greaser reached down to lift the hand mirror up. Johnny could see his eyes in the reflection as he assessed the work Johnny did. He ran a hand over his hair. And then he smiled.Â
âIt looks good, Johnnykid. Congrats, youâre my barber now.âÂ
âCan I get a nickel then?â Johnny asked. He held out his hand expectantly.Â
Dally flipped him off, âIâll keep letting you tag along with me, how âabout that?â
âSounds just fine to me.â Johnny leaned down and wrapped his arms around Dallyâs shoulders. It was a gesture of affection that he wouldnât normally try on Dally, but their conversation left him feeling bold. Dally must have felt the same, because he boosted Johnny up into a piggy-back ride.Â
âHold on tight, itâs not my fault if you crack your skull,â Dally told him.Â
Johnny did as he was told with a wide smile. Heâd let Dally carry him wherever he wanted.

Am I the only one that feels bad for the socs? In the car, when he goes to talk to Ponyboy, Ponyboy states how randy looked like he wanted to cry but he just didn't want to. I feel like he didn't want to because ponyboy was a greaser and socs are labeled as "too cool" to feel anything. Ponyboy could cry, he could because he isn't labeled as cool. Sure, greasers are labeled as reckless and rebellious but that doesn't mean emotions. Randy didn't want to cry because he wanted to have a tough exterior but ponyboy could see past that since he knew how it was since he lost Dallas and Johnny.
Randy wanted everything to stop so in "That Was Then, This Is Now" he changed to a hippie, who distanced himself from the conflict because he wanted the socs and greasers to stop. He wanted them to stop because he was tired of the violence which was basically useless and to break the cycle of hatred.
I hate people who hate Sherri because she didn't visit Johnny when he was in the hospital. SOME people in the fandom think that she didn't because she just didn't want to but obviously you wouldn't go check on the boy that killed your boyfriend, yes I know that's hard to get in someone's mind.
Sherri is the first one to tell a greaser, who thinks that all socs are bad, that everything is rough all over and basically that socs have it worse, just like greasers with money but socs with feelings.
Last but not least, Bob, the actual antagonist. Robert 'Bob' Sheldon, a soc that's portrayed as tough and aggressive. He's also known for being arrogant, reckless and confrontational. Bob is basically a troubled person who has his own issues with his parents, who don't care what he does. Randy tells ponyboy that basically bob's parents never set any limits which is why he's the way he is.
Bob wanted someone to tell him no, wanting someone to set the limits. He basically wanted someone to care enough to give him a ground to stand on which makes me sad because he didn't get what he wanted, he just got killed due to his reckless behavior and his neglectful parents.
ANDDDD yeah guys.. that's my ramble about the socs that I have deep feelings for. I dnt talk about Marcia since she isn't mentioned much other than she's funny, she's a soc and Sherri's best friend. All I do is yap about the socs, man.

HII!! I was wondering if I could request Dallas Winston with a hippie!reader headcanons? I love ur writing btw <3
thanks for requesting ! i hope you enjoy !!
â˘at first dally really wanted to hate you.
â˘you dressed so different than most people in town. you stuck out like an eye sore.
â˘he definitely thought it was weird at first, but when the gang started to bring you around more, he had not other choice than to be around you.
â˘you were nice, maybe too nice for your own good. anytime dallas had make a snarky or hateful comment towards you, you just hid the pain behind a smile.
⢠âwhat are you some kind of witch or something?â dallas would ask, but you just laugh his questuin off and focus on something else.
â˘he tried his hardest to get you to hate him, but you had no hate in your body. you were someone who thought everyone deserved love. even if they werenât the best people.
â˘eventually, dallas let up on his comments towards you. for a while he ignored you, preventing his self from saying something snarky.
â˘the rest of the guys actually enjoyed your state of mind.
â˘ponyboy especially, if youâre more into nature. the two of you would sit and watch the sunrise or sunset. you often shared your interests with pony as he enjoyed hearing about it.
â˘dallas never understood your fascination with nature until stumbling across you in the lot watching the sunset.
⢠âwhaddya doin?â he asks, approaching you from behind. your head turns to him, smiling softly. âwatching the sunset. wanna join?â
â˘you knew better than to ask but to your surprise he walks over and sits down next to you.
⢠âwhatâs that?â he asks, pointing to the bundle of flowers in your lap. âoh! a flower crown!â you raise it from you lap letting him look at it.
â˘he nods âcoolâ he mumbles under his breath and looks away.
â˘dallas is shocked when you place it on his head and stifle a laugh. âwhat?â
â˘you shake your head, smiling. âit suits you.â
â˘dallas feels flustered, he hadnât felt this way toward someone. at least, in a very long time. he didnât mind that you put the crown on him, in fact he thought it was cute.
â˘the sun had already set, it was just getting dark. âdallas, do you hate me?â
â˘the questions makes his eyebrows furrow. it was so sudden.
⢠âno..but i wanted toâ he says, you look at him. âwhy?â he sighs, looking ahead.
⢠âyouâre too good for someone like me, i thought the best way to not love you was hate you. but it didnât work.â
â˘from that moment on, the two of you became something more than just friends.
â˘but it took some time before he finally realized how in love with you he was.
â˘and then, he finally decided to make it official.
â˘dallas learned to love your way of life.
â˘heâd carry around crystals you gifted him in his pocket. of course, he wouldnât tell anybody.
â˘he wore the jewelry youâd make sometimes. it was so unusual for him to do or even let someone do that for him.
â˘but, dallas let you because he finally felt wanted for the first time in a while.
â˘he let you be you because thatâs the person he fell in love with.

Ponyboy for the ask game?
Will do! Apologies about the delay.
How I feel about this character
Book >>>> any other form. Snarky 14 year old boy with a lot more hope than he realizes. A lot like me (especially with needless complaining/bitching) but cooler in some regards, too. PTSD moment. Heâs great to me, but I get why people might not like him!
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Again, donât ship, but here are some dynamics I like!
Mark because heâs horrible and leaves Pony worse off. (Shoutout to byyourladyhell ofc!)
Randy purely because their dynamic could be fun. (Shoutout to @veggiesforpresident with that one)
Curly would be a fling/on-and-off situation if anything, but it could be fun! Also if anyone can explain wtf the âpapercutâ thing means, Iâd appreciate it.
EMDR therapy đŠľ
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Pony might be a hater, but heâs got a lot of love, too. Two-Bit and Pony adventures are fun, Curly and Pony do stupid shit together, Johnny and Pony balance each other (even if not perfectly), and of course, his brothers. Ponyâs got a good community!
My unpopular opinion about this character
Several, as per usual. But I personally think he wouldnât be a hippie nor really like the movement much; itâs a lot of rich kids cosplaying poverty for the sake of political change at best or recognition from other nepo-babies at worst. To me heâs still pretty anti-war and somewhat New Left, but he grew up working class so I canât see him being real thrilled about certain aspects. Also heâs not an evil brat, heâs 14. Jesus.
One thing I wish happened with this character in canon
Iâm fairly happy with what we got! I guess maybe some insight on his parents, but idk. Iâd prefer to write or read the various interpretations over more canon stuff.

Okay something I'm really curious about in S.E. Hinton's books is the characters with the same name. Like okay, Johnny Cade and Johnny Collins aren't the same guy. But what about Randy the Soc who was running away from Tulsa and Randy the hippie who gave Mark and Bryon a ride. What about Connie, Lem Peter's wife and Connie, the girl Mike Chambers saves from his own gang.
Because clearly characters like Curly and Ponyboy are meant to be repeated in different books, but what about the minor characters. The ones that are mentioned once and then never again. Is that intentional? Or just a manifestation of the fact that these books were written before naming your characters was just a quick "baby names for girls with 5 syllables that start with an s" Google search?
#i'm so curious#because if they were the same people it'd be so cool#and it would really give off a strong âtiny townâ feeling#the outsiders#that was then this is now#twttin#rumble fish#tex se hinton

â~ Hatred and cuddles ~â
(tahbks to pokie @peachyponyboyy for hklpyng me with ygis and the anon wgo sugghested it)
đđĽđđ§đ đŠ đđđđ đŁđđđđđŁ, đđ¨đđ đđŁđ đĽđđđŁâđ¤ đđđ¤đĽ đđŁđđđđ
You were Sodapopâs twin brother. You were just kind of there. You werenât a greaser, you just didn't like how it made your hair look. I guess you could be considered a hippie? You could never touch a blade or use a bottle, you were all about peace. Steve slightly disliked you because of that, you were just so⌠calm⌠it irritated him. You wouldnât fight with him and never really argued with anyone and it just pissed him off!! He didnât know what exactly about it pissed him off but it just did.
Right now, he was waiting for someone, just anyone, to get to the Curtis house. It was just the two of you, it was pretty late at night but no one was home. Dally was in the cooler, two-bit was babysitting his sister for once, Darry was still at work, soda was out at who knows where, and he couldnât care less what Johnny and ponyboy were doing. You were currently in your pajamas, a pair of basketball shorts and a baggy old shirt, a hand me down from Darry. You couldnât quite get the smell of darryâs cheap ass dollar general cologne out of it, no matter how many washes it went through and no matter how many years youâve had it.
He sat on one bed of the couch and you sat pretty close next to him. You guys were watching whatever was in the TV, it was kind of boring since you were too poor for cable but it was whatever. You were pretty tired, but you didnât wanna get up and go to your room. You started to fall asleep on the couch. After a while you felt your body go limp and your eyes shut and succumbing to your tired state.
Steve felt a weight fall onto his side, looking over it was you. Asleep and leaning onto him. He grumbled about you being annoying and stupid but oddly he couldnât push you off.. with anyone else it wouldnât be a problem and he would easily shove them off of the couch head first but something was⌠different⌠right now. A slight pale pinkish reddish color washed over his cheeks and he wrapped one arm around you. He gently pulled you closer. He was currently just wearing some jeans and socks, he had came home from work and almost immediately gotten kicked out by his dad again so he had just had his DX shirt on when he got there. He took it off almost immediately when he got there and kicked off his shoes. He soon fell asleep shortly after you, his head resting on top of yours (you guys are sharing lice, so coquette >o< <333)
Steve woke up to the flashes of cameras, you still asleep next to him, the rest of the gang giggling as pony took pictures of the two of you sleeping. You started to wake up too. Steve put his arm over his eyes, the bright light that flashed with every picture blinding him. âWhat the hell is happeningâ he murmured angrily. The gang scattered and you sat up more. You looked around, drowsy and disoriented. You leaned back against Steve after managing to gain the consciousness to realize where you were and what the fuck is happening.
âWelcome back.â He murmured as he looked at you. He flicked your forehead causing you to flinch, he chuckled at your nose which scrunched up when you were irritated. He started to shove you and tried to get a rise out of you, being the peaceful guy that you were you just politely asked him to stop which pissed him off even more. âGod, why are you so fucking annoying!â He basically yelled out at you. You stared at him bewilderedly. âW-wha?-â you asked in confusion. âYouâre just so- so- infuriating!â He put up air quotes as he spoke â âoOh Iâm Y/n AnD iM sUpEr SeNsItIvE aNd iM a LiTtLe WuSs WhO wOnT mAn Up AnD fIgHt!!!â â he mocked. You had always been more sensitive; kind of like ponyboy. You cried easy and your brother teased you for it a lot. You felt the tingle of tears starting to form in your eyes. He started to go on and on about how annoying you were and how much he hated you. And you just⌠broke⌠tears started to sting your face as if they were acid spilt into your face.
Steve just froze, watching as your usually calm face was washed away by your emotions. âI- uhmâŚâ he sputtered out. He didnât know what to do. He was always bad with crying, hell he couldnât even get himself to stop crying in the rare occasions he did but this was just too much. He didnât expect you to cry like that, he didnât think he had been that harsh on you. He awkwardly wrapped him arms around you. âUhm⌠i- âm sorry⌠donât cry⌠uhm⌠pleaseâŚ.?â That last word felt weird to say, it just felt unnatural coming off of his tongue. He felt bad for the first time in his life, he had made people cry before but he didnât really care that much. He usually just said go cry about it and walked away.
He just sat there, with his arms wrapped around you in a hug. Gently patting your back as he tried to get you to stop crying. After a bit you managed to calm down, small hiccups and sniffles being the only sound coming out of you. He let go of you as you wiped your eyes. âUhm⌠âm sorryâŚâ he murmured out, he just prayed none of your brothers had woken up. You looked up at him through wet lashes. âIâm sorry⌠i-i-â he cut you off âwhat are you sorry for, âm the one who yelled at youâŚâ you didnât know what to say back. You guys just watched TV silently.
After a while you guys started to talk, just normal conversation. You guys basically talked all night. You leaned slightly into him and he wrapped and arm around, you watched tv cuddled up all lovingly like, his hard shell of hate cracked as this was all to try and make you feel better after he made you cry. You guys both had a light hue of pink on your cheeks as you talked, and at the end of your chat before you guys went to sleep you guys shared a gentle kiss. And of course you guys woke up to the gang laughing at you two cuddling and taking embarrassing pictures to tease you guys. And dally calling you two gay ofc đđđ

i think that chapt. 11 of the outsiders, where ponyboy has that talk with randy â a talk a lot of people think is good but frankly i find that it's bland as anything â feels like something an editor mandated for se.
this isn't me saying i have knowledge. i don't know and if i went to go look for an interview i more than likely wouldn't find anything about it. (though i certainly do want to start digging through some interviews)) i just feel with the way it's written, with the sort of clumsy delivery, the other novels se went on to write, and the times, that the editor might've insisted on it. it feels entirely plausible that se's editor wanted the book to conclude in a more hand holdsy manner that showed the Socs Weren't So Bad because as an adult the chapter comes off very differently. (and even then, when i read this as a kid was not impressed!) darry had no business allowing randy in, randy was a total oblivious idiot, and even though pony sort of lands on that "Socs are People" i feel like the full thought is "Socs Are People, I Guess!" in large part because randy doesn't really do much other than grovel, knowing full well a legal procedure is about to occur. it comes off much more like clueless rich boy shit and maybe some level of manipulation as i finish my very long re-read.
like, come on. randy sounds severely out of touch with reality, and i'm so glad pony notes that as they talk. i'd honestly wager almost every appearance of randy was somewhat an editor's note, though again i don't have proof.
what i can see is that randy unilaterally sucks and still isn't make a good case for the Soc characters. they all still come off like entitled brats who eventually transform into hippies and then consumerist yuppies.
#the outsiders#'but socs have points of views and lives as people!' agree. that doesn't mean they're interesting

little one shot about The Bffs Of All Time (PB & Johnny) smonkin weed for the first time for the last day of Outsiders Week! Idk just thought it was fun. Docs formatted it kinda weird, but yk:
(Link to my AO3 at the end in case anyone wants to read my other thing lol)
It sort of stung on the way down, like a cigarette almost, only it ached a little more. Cigarettes are sharp. Crisp. They sting a little, but the smoke rolls easy on the way out. This was different. Especially the way it made me feel. I knew Darry would tear me a new one if he ever found out...but I didn't think he would, although, if we weren't careful the smell would give us away.Â
Two-Bit made real sure to warn us about that. "Hell, you could always tell him the two of y'all been poundin' the pavement with a pack of wild skunks, but that'll only fly for so long!" I could tell he was trying to hold back a spirited howl. He's always playing to an audience of one, even when he's got company, but the last thing we needed was to draw attention to ourselves and he knew it. "Hell! The thing is," he muffled another cackle in the crook of his elbow, "after a while, he'll probably expect yall to start bringing these guys around! That's when you know the jig is up!"Â
I caught a whiff of the cigarette he had pinched between his teeth and it made me think he'd been hanging around with the very same pack of skunks, himself. Maybe that's where he'd gotten his stash.Â
It wouldn't be a huge stretch of the imagination, Two-Bit pals around with some real wild characters. Guess it comes along with knowing just about every guy in town. Being on their good side is a different story, though. You gotta be on a guy's good side for him to risk his skin selling you grass.Â
At first I didn't feel all that much. Nothing really, to tell you the truth. People talk about grass like it's magic. A heaven sent gift from God and a bunch of hippie shit like that. For a second I got a little kick out of the let down. I could say I tried it and it wasn't all that great. All those flower children were just up on their soap boxes, wanting to feel like they had something special. It wasn't until I felt a grin creep across my face at the thought that I realized it was working.Â
"Whatchu smilin' at over there Pone?" I didn't hear Johnny at first, his smooth voice disappearing into the fog that'd settled over my mind, but a quick jab to the shoulder brought me back down to the cool dirt and sparse weeds littered across the empty lot where we'd hunkered down. "Hey, c'mon! Don't space out on me now man!"Â
"Oh uh..."
"Pass it, man."
I snatched the smoke from my lips, holding it up to Johnny's outstretched hand. He had this real goofy grin that I hardly ever saw on him and even in the dark, I could tell his eyes were just a little brighter than usual. It wasn't until we both started giggling like little girls that I realized I was wearing the exact same smile.Â
"Works, don't it?" Johnny choked back a cough and another puff of smoke floated off into the night. It was cold out, cold enough to see your breath, which made our long drags all the more impressive. Johnny passed it back and this time I was quick on the uptake.Â
"Yeah man...makes...makes me feel like a dragon or something." I blew a puff of smoke Johnny's way. He sorta scoffed, still grinning, to be sure. "You know, breathing smoke and all?"Â
"Ponyboy, you already breathe more smoke than ya' do air! You've always been a damn dragon!"Â
I pulled out our match book and struck one, waving it around in front of us until the flame went out. "Well it ain't official till' I start spitting fire!" Usually Johnny would've scolded me for wasting matches, and normally, I wouldn't've, but we both got a little kick out of it just that once.Â
"Hell...now that ya' mention it..." Johnny turned his gaze up towards the night sky, "I feel like I might just fly away if I smoke enough of this shit." He thought real hard for a second, or at least, he looked like he was.Â
Johnny's got this real particular look when he's thinking on something. Distinct, I guess, from the way his face usually looks. He scrunches his nose up a little, just enough for a couple wrinkles, and puts on this sorta pout in between spells of biting at his lips. He just looks scrunched up, but not in a bad way. "I don't think I'd wanna be a dragon, though." That broke us out into another spell of giggling. I could tell neither of us wanted to laugh too hard. Same as Two-Bit, who'd taken off just as soon as handing over the grass, we didn't wanna draw too much attention to ourselves, despite how late it was. Really, because of it.Â
After a little while, I couldn't tell you exactly how long, I settled down enough to take another drag. The grass sort of made time pass funny. I couldn't really get a grip on how long we'd been out there. Not like I'm all that great at sticking to a schedule anyway. To be honest, I couldn't tell if the grass was really slowing down time, or if it just made me stop caring about the idea all together.Â
Mostly I was still entertaining myself with the idea of the two of us, me and Johnny, taking off and flying around for a while. Maybe forever⌠we'd never come back down.Â
"Shit Johnny Cake, if you ain't gonna be a dragon, then what the hell would you be? A pigeon?" I knew we were just chewing the fat, but I really did wanna know. Besides, the idea was still giving us a good laugh. Â
"Nah man!" Johnny choked on his drag. "No one wants to be a damn pigeon! I'd be something tuff, you know? Like a hawk or an eagle...I kinda like those little black birds. Ya' know? The ones with the red stripe on the wing..." he waited for a nod so he could tell I was listening. My mind tends to wander off sometimes, even when people are talking right to me. Johnny knew that better than anyone, but I was listening that time. "I don't know, maybe an owl. Anything that can fly..."Â
Something about the way he said it made my heart sink, despite my buzz. I tried to disguise the sudden burble of sadness in my voice. I didn't want it rubbing off on Johnny. I never want it rubbing off on anyone, really, but I know it does. It's hard to hide sometimes. "I don't know about beinâ a bird, but it ain't too late to take up pilot training." I smiled over at Johnny, but it wasn't a big, goofy grin like before. Just a quick twitch at the corner of my mouth. More of a consolation than anything.Â
Johnny was thinking again, this time poking around in the dirt and picking at stray blades of grass. "We might wanna actually ride in a plane first, I guess." I tried to salvage the mood, but I had to fight back a twinge of guilt for having spoiled it in the first place.Â
"I wouldn't even know where to go." His head tilted back up towards the stars. By then our smoke was a little over halfway ashed and I thought about putting it out to save for later, but all of a sudden a seemingly prolific vision of Darry finding it, or smelling it, rather, in my normal pack flashed across my mind and gave me the motivation I needed to keep on smoking it down to the butt.Â
By then I was feeling real lightheaded and my eyelids were getting sort of heavy. Different from when you're real tired, but still just... heavy. I would've given anything for an ice cold coke.  Â
"I'm not too convinced there'd be much out there for me anyway, Pone." I tried to think of something to say that wouldn't sound corny, and I found myself wishing Two-Bit wouldn't've taken off so soon. He always seems to stick around for longer than heâs welcome, except for when you actually need him. Still, he can get a grin out of anyone. A real one, too.Â
"How 'bout Hollywood? Y'know?" Smoke pooled out from my nostrils, lingering in the air for a split second as I tried to ignore the burning in my throat. "Be in the movies?" I delt Johnny a playful jab to the shoulder. He rolled his eyes and reached for the cigarette, but I caught a distinct smirk sprawled out across his face.Â
"You know I ain't handsome like you, Ponyboy. That's how they like 'em out there."Â
"Aw hell! That ain't true!" Out of the corner of my eye I caught Johnny bringing a hand up to his cheek, gingerly tracing the scar that we both knew he'd carry with him for the rest of his life, but I pretended not to notice. I knew he hated it. Hated the idea that it'd always be there, but I hardly even noticed it anymore.Â
We just sat like that for a while, passing the last of the grass between us, not talking, hardly even breathing between wheezes, it seemed. "Man..." Johnny finally broke the silence, flipping the burnt out butt into the dirt, "I thought this shit was supposed to make you feel good."Â

inflicting paul with an older sister (who i have named penelope) to further my peril angst potential in my foster ponyboy au
- so i absolutely see penelope and paul as age gap siblings, so paul was born when penny was 16 and a junior in high school
(a bunch more under the cut ;)
- penelope was 100% the golden child for her whole life. the whole nine yards, she did track, swimming, and cheerleading, she was valedictorian, truly every parentâs dream child
- she had such a good relationship with her parents, too, man they ADORED her, mr. holden was always bragging on the golf course about his brilliant baby girl was gonna go to stanford or columbia (bc she had the grades to get in anywhere and tbh they could afford to send her anywhere she wanted to go) and mrs. holden was constantly taking her on little girls dates and just spoiling the hell out of her
- not gonna lie, her parents having paul her junior year kinda messed with her.. she was well on her way to a full ride to whatever college she wanted with her grades and her athletics but she really took it hard when paul was born and she lost her relationship with both of her parents
- all this is NOT to say that she didnât like paul bc man she loved this baby boy SO MUCH and she was seriously the best big sister⌠but paul doesnât remember that, just growing up in her shadow but never even really knowing her *tear*
- with nobody really pushing her to go to college on a scholarship or pressuring her into going to law school, she kinda figured out that she really.. hated the idea?
- she eventually decided to start saving up her allowance (which letâs be honest, itâs probably way too much) and after she graduated, she took her car and headed west until she hit the ocean and just,, never came back
- she def kept in contact with the family, only really came back to visit for christmas and maybe once in the summer if california was realllly hot (tulsa wasnât much better but at least it rained god damn) but other than that she doesnât really ever see them
- paul does NOT like to admit it,, but he misses her :( obviously his parents are very supportive of him in football and whatever else, but he wishes she wanted to see him more, especially because their mom talks ALL THE TIME about how great of a big sister was when he was little before she left
- penny and paul have a lot of unresolved resentment towards each other (penny bc when paul was born he ruined her relationship with her parents and paul bc heâs been compared to her for his whole life) which SUCKS bc they really kinda need each other bc theyâre not really mad at each other their parents just didnât know how to have two kids
- so naturally, when ponyboy comes into the picture and paul is already trying to navigate *this* dynamic change and how he feels about it (*cough* darry *cough*) of fucking course thatâs when penelope decides to come back home for a couple of months
- she bonds with ponyboy pretty much right away, even though sheâs like almost 30 and pony is still 13, they just get each other. donât ask him about it bc he might punch a wall but paul is SO jealous of it
- not that hippies are a thing in tulsa but my god sheâs well on her way lol which i think blends realllllly well with ponyâs sunset-poetry-head-in-the-clouds vibe
- on the hippie note: she absolutely gives pony a blunt at some point thinking heâs older than 13 and he tells her EVERYTHING, literally nothing is off the table; his parents, his brothers, HIS BROTHER AND HER BROTHER
- so yea thatâs how penny found out about paul and darry lol
- and like the big sister that she is, she obviously is gonna invite darry and soda over for dinner one night just to watch the two of them go insane (and also pony gets to see his brothers so, win-win)

you think any of the guys in the s.e. hinton-verse would be into star wars?? I feel like johnny def would, steve at first pretends to hate it but would stand in the living room in that arms-crossed-dad-way while someone is watching and end up being super into it, potentially unpopular opinion but pony would Not be a fan of any sci-fi shit, it feels too easy to mention m&m but I mean câmon lmao đđ but idk!! dump your thoughts if youâre interested ksjsksjd
Yeah definitely! Star Wars comes out in the â77, ig, I think they allude to it in âTexâ (Jamie says smth abt âthe smugglerâ in the the movie she saw being hot, n the only film w/ a smuggler in it that came out then that I know of is âA New Hopeâ), so by the time The Outsiders greasers see it, theyâre in their mid-late 20s? Idk Iâm not gonna think hard abt the timeline lol
-Johnny would automatically like it, b/c itâs fast paced and fun and just a good time.
-Dally would probably be a Han Solo fan but ya couldnât pay him to admit it out loud. But he high key wants to be Harrison Ford. -Cherry would 100% like Leia I think! Sheâd go into Star Wars thinking itâs a silly kid movie but sheâd end up really liking it
-Youâre right, I think Ponyâs a sci-fi hater. Heâd like Star Wars for the uniqueness (for the time lol lord knows the marketâs oversaturated nowadays), but he wouldnât be particularly eager to see the next films unless heâs going with Johnny or Cherry or some other friend. He just canât imagine wanting to be someplace soâŚalien, even if itâs just in your imagination?? (Idk thatâs why I donât usually /love/ sci fi, so)
-Soda would go nuts about the ships. If heâd been a little kid when he first saw it, heâd have totally collected little starship toys (totally not projecting or anything) Heâd get bored during the slower parts, but heâd get real into the fight scenes
-Steve would dislike Luke Skywalker because he reminds him of Ponyboy. But heâd love the starships like Soda, and heâd like Han Solo like Dally. Heâd act like heâs too cool to like it, but he also is one of the first ones in line to get tickets when âEmpireâ comes out a few years later. Heâd definitely prefer American Graffiti tho over Star Wars- more hot rods, more drag racing, more good music (btw John, the greaser in AG, and the little girl, Carol, are like 70% Steve and Ponyboy to me lol)
-Darry would think itâs a kid film, but heâd end up liking it okay
-Two-Bit would think itâs cool, but heâd also be kinda drunk and not sure how much of it was actually in the film and how much of it was just him being buzzed. Leia would low-key remind him of Marcia, although that could just be because theyâre both hot brunettes with sharp tongues. Marcia would adore the comparison
-M&M strikes me as a sci fi enjoyer so I bet heâd become a Star Wars nerd. The only thing I guess he wouldnât be keen on is the war part seeing as heâs a hippie n all. But ig the point of Star Wars isâŚending the war and achieving peace, so that seems in line w/ his beliefs? Idk my Maâs a former hippie and she always dug Star Wars so I think itâs fine lol
May rb w/ more characters later, idk!
