Jazz Funk: India's Spicy Spin on a Global Groove
Forget your rigid ballet slippers and dusty tap shoes. The future of dance in India is sizzling hot, laced with sass, and pulsating with the infectious energy of Jazz Funk. This hybrid style, a cross between the smooth sensuality of jazz and the funky swagger of hip-hop, is setting stages ablaze across the country, captivating audiences and challenging the very definition of dance. So, loosen your inhibitions, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to delve into the electrifying world of Jazz Funk, desi style.
Though new, this dance style is being taught in many Bollywood dance institute in Mumbai.
From Broadway to Bharatnatyam:
Jazz Funk isn't just a random amalgamation of dance styles. Its roots lie in the rich tapestries of jazz and funk, genres born in the streets and clubs of America. From the sultry swing of Josephine Baker to the electrifying grooves of James Brown, jazz imbued movement with storytelling, while funk added a layer of raw, rebellious energy. These influences crossed continents, finding fertile ground in India, where they intertwined with the graceful fluidity of Kathak and the explosive power of Bhangra. This cultural fusion birthed an entirely new expression – Jazz Funk, with its unique Indian flavor. Many Bollywood dance academy in Mumbai has caught upon this trend and added their own twist.
The Evolution of Sass:
The early days of Jazz Funk in India were marked by experimentation. Renowned choreographers like Shiamak Davar and Terence Lewis, who trained under international masters, pioneered the style, blending jazz isolations with hip-hop footwork and infusing Kathak's elegance into funky sequences. Bollywood embraced the trend, with films like "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and "Dil To Pagal Hai" setting the stage for Jazz Funk's cinematic ascension. Madhuri Dixit's spunky "Ek Do Teen" and Karisma Kapoor's sassy "Chhaiyya Chhaiyya" became iconic, showcasing the genre's potential to tell stories through movement and attitude.
Beyond Bollywood Bluster:
But Jazz Funk wasn't just a Bollywood fad. It resonated with the spirit of a new generation, eager to express themselves beyond traditional boundaries. Dance academies across India started offering dedicated Jazz Funk classes, attracting not just aspiring actors but also fitness enthusiasts and anyone seeking a fun, liberating way to move. Workshops by international artists like Mia Michaels and Marty Kudelka fuelled the movement, sharing global trends and pushing the boundaries of Indian Jazz Funk. Thus, many dance enthusiasts are keen on learning this dance style.
Spicing Up the Stage:
Today, Indian Jazz Funk is a dynamic entity, constantly evolving. Choreographers like Bosco-Caesar and Remo D'Souza are infusing contemporary elements, incorporating aerial silks and acrobatic feats into their routines. Bollywood itself is experimenting, with films like "Bajirao Mastani" and "Padmaavat" showcasing intricate, story-driven Jazz Funk sequences. But the essence remains – that unique blend of sass, sensuality, and raw energy that sets Indian Jazz Funk apart.
From Studio to Spotlight:
The opportunities for Jazz Funk dancers in India are as diverse as the style itself. Bollywood films and music videos continue to be lucrative avenues, while the rise of web series and digital platforms offer new platforms for talent. Dance crews like Kings United and Desi Hoppers are proving their mettle on international stages, putting Indian Jazz Funk on the global map. And of course, there's the ever-growing world of brand activations and corporate events, where high-energy Jazz Funk performances can electrify any audience.
Beyond the Glittering Stage:
Jazz Funk isn't just about sequins and high kicks. It's a dance form that empowers. Its focus on self-expression and individuality encourages dancers to break free from societal constraints and embrace their unique voices. It fosters a sense of community, where studios become sanctuaries for self-discovery and fellow dancers become a supportive network. This empowering aspect transcends age and background, making Jazz Funk accessible to anyone with a fire in their heart and a rhythm in their soul.
So, Are You Ready to Funk?:
Whether you're a seasoned dancer seeking a new challenge or a curious observer captivated by the rhythm, Indian Jazz Funk welcomes you with open arms (and funky footwork). It's a genre that defies labels, celebrates individuality, and keeps the beat of innovation alive. So, find your nearest studio, put on your dancing shoes, and let the contagious energy of Jazz Funk guide you. You can learn this dance form in many Bollywood dance classes in Mumbai. Remember, in this world, the only rule is to move with confidence, own your sass, and let your inner funk shine through. Because in the vibrant tapestry of Indian dance, Jazz Funk is the thread that's weaving the future, one shimmy and slide at a time.

Today Netflix is home to a heartwarming story, directed by national award winner Sooni Taraporevala, about the life of a young girl and her journey through the world of dance. The music of the film is accompanied by Ankur Tewari and beautifully choreographed by talented duo Raghuram Rajan and Manoj Tiwari.
youtube
Yeh Ballet is a film inspired by the true story of two boys from humble backgrounds in Mumbai who triumph over their circumstances and make their way to a prestigious international ballet school. The story is about Nishu (played by Manish Chauhan) and Asif (played by Achintya Bose), their fiercest rivals who become friends and hip-hop rebels. Based on the real life of a young dancer from Mumbai, it is a fictionalized version of her journey to master a form of dance that is not accepted by her peers.
Manish Chauhan plays a fictionalized version of himself called Nishu, who brings a refreshing dash of reality to the film. Debutant Achintya Bose has a background in contemporary jazz dance and plays a role based on Amiruddin, called Asif.
Yeh Ballet, now streaming on Netflix, is based on the true story of Manish Chauhan's Amiruddin Shah, who was discovered in Mumbai by his ballet guru Yehuda Maor at the age of 15 and 21. The youngster was eventually selected by a ballet school in America and is now pursuing his dream in dance. Director Sooni Taraporevala, who made a documentary about the two in 2017, has written her own version of Yeh Ballet 2020 to refine the back stories and apply religious, social and political filters to the dance drama. Writer-director Soonia Tar extends Chauhan's original story and the story of the relationship between the young Shah and Maor.
The film, directed by Kartik Vijay, follows the pace of the underdog story, starring Mumbai boys Amiruddin and Shah. Based on Yeh Ballet (streaming on Netflix), based on the real life story of Mumbai boy Amiruluddin Shah and his relationship with Maor.
The film shows Nishu, his fiercest competitor and friend, and Maor, a young girl from the same school as Amiruluddin. The story of two Mumbai boys from humble backgrounds who triumph over circumstances to reach the top of their respective sports inspired a fictionalized version in a short documentary called "The Same."
Tess Joseph, who was Sooni's collaborator in "The Namesake," cast relatively unknown faces in the film, such as the subservient Jim Sarbh as the owner of a dance academy. After discovering that Nishu and Asif are the same age as his best friend Amiruluddin, his life takes a dramatic turn. With this, the two boys break out of their respective schools and into the world of dance and the dance world in general.
There are no fewer than six debutants in the film, but the one who shines the most is certainly Nishu, the youngest of the two boys and the only one with a dancing background.
Separating truth from fiction is a difficult task for any filmmaker, but writer and director Sooni Taraporevala expands the themes of love, friendship and the meaning of family and friendship in the world of dance. With a story rooted in reality and a strong focus on the human condition, Sooni wraps up a dramatic punch line with his unique blend of humor and drama.
Directed by Sooni Taraporevala, Yeh Ballet is a dance film based on consistent writing and technical solidity. The film, directed by Kartik Vijay, follows the rhythm of an underdog story in which Mumbai boys Amiruddin and Shah argue about their love for each other. Based on the real-life story of the Mumbai Boys Club and her relationship with her best friend Yash, it will be streamed on Netflix.

ROLLING STONES INDIA
Tumblr media
Agosto de 2018
"The Rise and Rise of Zhang Yixing" Conheça o cantor pop/produtor chinês que está colocando a China no mapa da música global.
“Eu me inspirei no livro ‘O Alquimista’ [do escritor brasileiro Paulo Coelho]”, diz ele.

Sada Tamatar Scale 9/10. Must Watch. Sooni Taraporevala’s Yeh Ballet is a treasure to savor. Yeh Ballet’s protagonist, Asif (Achintya Bose) is a young, poor Muslim in love with hip-hop. Asif has to win a vital battle at home as his uncle criticizes his interest in music, considering it “haraam”. Nishu (Manish Chauhan), who, an exceptional dancer, comes from a impoverished family, contending with an indifferent father. Both Asif and Nishu land up at the Mumbai Dance Academy, where the chief instructor, Saul Aaron (Julian Sands), has recently arrived from the US. Temperamental, impatient and demanding utmost dedication to the craft, Saul has no tolerance for Indian niceties; the loud neighbors annoy him, the unprofessionalism at large – the lack of preparation, the very Indian ‘chalta hai’ attitude – doesn’t sit well with him, either. Yeh Ballet locates itself in the midst of inter- and intra-cultural differences while evolving the story of talent and passion in the most human way possible in the foreground. The passion of the Instructor and how the whole village gets their resources together to make sure that the boys get a chance to further their talent. Yeh Ballet as a story could not have been complete without the authenticity and the brilliance of its actors. Asif is witty, spirited, buoyant. He’s scared at one moment, optimistic the other – distinguishable qualities that make the character well-rounded. Yeh Ballet needed such acting finesse and these actors have fully justified the character required. This movie, inspired from an affecting real-life story, lends itself to natural pathos. The difference good actors can make is evident through the narrative. Go watch. Streaming on @netflix https://www.instagram.com/p/B-7uPr0h62b/?igshid=1iebky43udw9h

So you think you can dance? - art and culture
Tumblr media
Stefano Fardelli, of his eponymous dance company, is of the opinion that India has a huge dance community but unfortunately, “there are hardly any academies that offer a degree or diploma, which is recognised at the international or a professional level”. He says, “To be a part of an international dance group or platform, you will have to prove that you have a certified degree. It also means that you have to be trained in ballet and contemporary. EurAsia gives a chance to talents to learn and work at such a level. Also, it is an opportunity for these dancers to spread their culture outside their own country.”So, if you have always had the desire to pursue dance at an international level but didn’t know how to go about it, then EurAsia Dance Auditions by Stefano Fardelli Dance Company, supported by the Italian Embassy and Istituto Italiano di Cultura of Delhi and Mumbai, is organising an audition for dancers, who perform contemporary and hip-hop styles. Those who are selected, will get the opportunity to become a part of the EurAsia Network in Italy. They will also be awarded a 50% scholarship for the three to four year-long programme or two-year-long masters course.Born in Italy, Fardelli is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and artistic director of EurAsia Dance Project International Network. Trained at the MAS Academy in Milan, Italy, he then continued his studies in other choreographic centres across Europe. Among his international collaborations are the Berlin Opera, BBC, The Place, Royal Finland Opera, Les Gens d’Uterpan, English National Opera, Cie Twain, to name a few.Fardelli will select aspiring contemporary and hip-hop dance students for a professional course in DanceHaus (Italy), CDSH (Germany), DanceHaus Hip-Hop Department (Italy), and The Danish Talent Academy (Denmark). “We don’t give this kind of scholarship even to our students for all three years. This is a great opportunity for people coming from outside Europe, otherwise it is not possible for many to do justice to their own talents,” Fardelli says, adding that it is difficult for people coming from other countries to bear the costs at European institutes. He goes on to share, “There are also not many teachers here who would be able to teach the correct techniques of contemporary styles. I am not talking about the Indian traditional dance forms. That is your form and you are the best at it. I’m talking about careers in ballet, hip-hop, etc. Dance is not considered a career in many countries, so a lot of talented people do not receive the kind of support they should get. Our attempt is to help these people.” Read the full article
