Put On Your Raincoats | Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star AKA It's Called 'Murder', Baby (Spinelli, 1983)

This is available in both a hardcore version (Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star) and an R-rated version (It's Called 'Murder', Baby), and while both versions are enjoyable, I'd actually recommend going with the latter. Not just because it has some additional story scenes not present in the former, but because the sex works better in this material when barely glimpsed or kept offscreen. Much of the fun here is in having the actors sink their teeth into the noir throwback dialogue, so there's a certain frisson in keeping the sex in the realm of innuendo or fleetingly glimpsed flesh. (This is a case where the R-rated version I don't think even qualifies as softcore.)

This is an overtly nostalgic exercise, and Anthony Spinelli seems to take his cues from the 1975 version of Farewell, My Lovely in shooting this with a slight sepia undertone and fondness for lighting through blinds, and letting the art direction do a lot of the talking. The budget for a porno would have been a lot less than that of a mainstream movie, but he puts it where it counts, with smart use of old-timey locations likely taking up the slack so the money can be poured into the nice looking costumes. There is a certain joy in seeing all your favourite porn actors in '40s styling, and I must report that Lisa De Leeuw's tennis outfit nicely accentuates her already intriguing proportions, that whoever did Veronica Hart's hair deserves all the money in the world, and that Hillary Summers in platinum blonde curls and old timey underthings was doing a lot for me. There probably is an element of dress up with these things, but Spinelli like Dick Richards did in that other movie lets his actors shine, and I think Kelly Nichols and Juliet Anderson (who looks like she stepped out of the '40s) bring a nice level of humanity to the proceedings.

I quite like John Leslie in general but I think his detective hero is a little too horny and fallible for the material, as I think the Philip Marlowe role should evoke a certain guarded moral fibre. I do think he'd be pretty effective as the Fred MacMurray role in a Double Indemnity riff, and there's a certain unctuous quality to his delivery here that makes me think he'd also be fun as the hood who roughs up Bogie a couple of times until he gets done in by his bosses in the third act. That being said, the final exchange, followed by Leslie alone in the shadows in his office, ends things on an effectively poignant note.

It's not hard to see why Alfred Hitchcock would want to remake his 1934 film version of The Man Who Knew Too Much. It has good bones: a murder, a kidnapping, a political assassination plot, attractive international locations, colorful villainy, mistaken identifications, and innocents put in jeopardy by sheer accident. But he kind of blew it the first time with pallid protagonists (Leslie Banks and Edna Best), tedious comic byplay involving a sinister dentist, a wacky sun-worshiping cult, and a confusingly staged climactic shootout. Today it's best remembered for Peter Lorre's delicious villainy in his first English-language role. For the remake, Hitchcock supposedly told screenwriter John Michael Hayes not to watch the original or to read its screenplay but to follow his own retelling of the story. The result is a more supple narrative, and the stars, Doris Day and James Stewart, are a definite improvement over Best and Banks. Hayes has made them a rather edgy couple: She's an internationally known musical star who has gone into retirement to marry him, a Midwestern surgeon. He seems to be a bit resentful of her celebrity, and she seems to be a little disappointed at having to settle down in Indianapolis. He's given to outbursts of temper that she sometimes has to quell before he does something rash. Their marital tension never results in an out-and-out fight, but it makes for some uneasy moments. In some respects they verge on '50s stereotypes of male and female roles: He pulls out his medical expertise and administers a sedative to her before telling her that their son has been kidnapped, a rather extreme form of mansplaining. In the 1934 film, Best played an award-winning sharpshooter who fires the shot that kills the villain, while Day is given a softer task: She helps locate their kidnapped son by singing (and singing and singing) "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)," the film's Oscar-winning song. The remake is 45 minutes longer than the original, and it seems a little overextended. Still, the performances are good, and Robert Burks's Technicolor cinematography and the Marrakesh location of the first part of the film give the remake a definite edge, as does Bernard Herrmann's score. Herrmann makes his only on-camera appearance conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in the "Storm Cloud Cantata" at the Royal Albert Hall, in the pivotal scene that was carried over from the 1934 version.

Dr. Cornel Ronald West (born June 2, 1953) is a philosopher, political activist, social critic, author, and public intellectual. The grandson of a Baptist minister, he focuses on the role of race, gender, and class in American society and how people act and react to their “radical conditionedness”. A radical democrat and democratic socialist, he draws intellectual contributions from multiple traditions, including Christianity, the African American church, Marxism, neopragmatism, and transcendentalism. Among his most influential books are Race Matters and Democracy Matters.

He is a third-party candidate in the 2024 presidential election. After declaring his run with the People’s Party in June 2023, a week afterward, he announced he was instead seeking the nomination of the Green Party. In October 2023, he announced he was again switching his affiliation and running as an independent candidate.

He is an outspoken voice in left-wing politics in the US, and as such has been critical of members of the Democratic Party, including former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He has held professorships and fellowships at Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Princeton University, Yale University, Pepperdine University, Union Theological Seminary, and the University of Paris during his career. He is a frequent commentator on politics and social issues in many media outlets.

He co-hosted a radio program with Tavis Smiley, called Smiley and West. He has been featured in several documentaries, and made appearances in Hollywood films such as The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, providing commentary for both films. He has made several spoken words and hip hop albums, and due to his work, has been named MTV’s Artist of the Week.

(why is my study table perpetually messy?)

after school, i did a LOT of math. i tried a new to-do list for the weekend! we’ll see how that helps. it looks very cool though :)

my to-do list for the weekend along with any ideas i want to follow up on.

i re-used sticker packaging to make a cool sticky notes corner on my study table ‘wall’ because sticky notes come off of the wood.

Yesterday, i finished Knock The House Down and i fell in love with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, like you do, and decided that i need a dedicated place to all strong, powerful and badass women in history.

it’s right under my bookshelf and it features Alexandria The Great, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Sandra Day O’Connor and Hermione, ofc. I also have a sticky note listing others who will go up on the wall as soon as i get a chance to get prints.

this made me realize that i don’t have any Indian female badasses that i look up to and i’m working on that now. reading up on amazing feminist goddesses!

these women motivate and inspire me. whenever i’m feeling lost or unmotivated, i just glance over from my study table at these women watching me and i know that i must make them proud.
