The 1920s saw a revival in portraiture, and a belief in the importance of self-realisation influenced by modern psychology. The First World War had increased the numbers of women in the workforce, and in 1918 the vote was extended to many women. Carline had served in the Women’s Land Army during the war and the directness of her gaze is suggestive of the increased independence of the modern woman of the inter-war period. Carline trained with the post-impressionist painter Percyval Tudor-Hart and at the Slade School of Fine Art, where her brothers Sydney and Richard also studied.

Biography

Hilda Anne Carline (1889–1950) was a British painter, daughter of the artist George Francis Carline, and first wife of the artist Stanley Spencer. She studied art under the Post-Impressionist Percyval Tudor-Hart, with her brothers Sydney and Richard, and then at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks. She had a promising early start with her works being shown at the London Group, Royal Academy and New English Art Club.

In 1925 she married fellow artist Stanley Spencer with whom she had what has been described as "the most bizarre domestic soap opera in the history of British art." During the time that Carline lived with Spencer she rarely painted and it was not until they separated that she began painting more frequently. Carline's physical and mental health was poor starting several years after her divorce and after 1937 she lived with family members. Spencer became obsessed with his ex-wife with whom he corresponded and painted. In her later years she made religious works with pastels. She died in 1950, having struggled for several years with breast cancer. A touring exhibition of her works, The Art of Hilda Carline: Mrs. Stanley Spencer, was held in 1999.

OK I CANNOT tag as many people as I have WIPs. Trust me, you’ll see below. So if you want to do this, consider yourself tagged!

Because when I say “I write a lot and don’t post everything I write” I mean that and I think some people should see it.

Also my stringent organization system because my writing folders are the only thing in my life I do organize.

Some of these WIPS are several pages long. Some are a few sentences, just short paragraphs. Some are just notes thrown into a document in rough bullet points. I keep things in Scraps and Notes files to reuse when the original fic they were written for had no room for them, or if it’s a short idea such as a line of description or dialogue that has no other home fic attached to it yet.

Many I just have to go through and finish up; some of them are waiting on me to do a New Game+ replay to get more than immediate impressions and reactions and flesh them out into proper stories (a lot of the “reunion” titled pieces, especially in Shadowbringers, fall into this).

Some will never see public cuz they’re indulgences for me, as I figure out characters and dynamics. Or, in the case of “Amber Embrace”, a hormone-induced fever dream of a pairing I don’t usually ship prompted by a piece of art. As you do.

I write the most for Aeryn--always the plan--not much for the other OCs that hasn’t been posted, though some things are in drafts. Various writings for various NPCs. Names of people in titles are usually who else is involved/POV character).

Anyway I’m putting this below a cut because I have a lot of WIPs and not to mention everything else I keep in my FF Fan Write Folder, like some of my analysis writing, copies of quest text and lyrics for more analysis and fic ideas, and of course the actual finished fics originals/backups.

What’s the link between the Harris and the River Thames?

Meet David Barber, Swan Marker to the Queen, and get to know our painting,  Swans, Cookham (1935) by Hilda Carline.

David will talk about his long career on the River Thames and his work to develop swan conservation as part of the historic Swan Marker role. His boatyard is featured in the painting of swans on the river at Cookham by Hilda Carline which is in our fine art collection. There will be an opportunity to see the painting, which is not currently on show, up close, and talk to our fine art curator, Lindsey McCormick, about the artist and her husband Stanley Spencer. We'll also direct you find some of the other objects on display around the Harris featuring swans.
