Today's hiking plans were thwarted by a mountain road unexpectedly covered in so much ice and snow, that I had to turn around as I didn't have snow chains in my trunk.

But I didn't want to let that ruin my day, and visited a gorge I had long wanted to see, instead.

At the beginning of the walk into the the gorge, the Periadratic Fault - a geological fault line marking the collision of the Adriatic and the European plate - is quite visible. It has always fascinated me, that I could cross over onto a different tectonic plate so near to my home. It was good that I hiked alone, so I could geek out over geomorphological structures without drawing bewildered stares 😂

A Casual Hike in Austria, 1970s

Two weeks ago, husband and I took a Friday off in order to flee from the heat up to a cooler area.

As it was husband's first hike this season, we decided on a trail he likes to hike - not for it's scenery, but for the many culinary options to be found on the way 😀

I was glad we dediced on this trail for different reasons entirely: blooming alpine roses were to be found there.

The whole day, all our senses screamed to get off that mountain, though. The air felt charged, but it was not due to a thunderstorm building up, but sahara sand in the air was the cause of the eerie athmosphere.
