So… quick story time. Ten years ago, the summer after I had graduated high school, I discovered Hiccstrid. I read all the fics on AO3 and ff.net, but that wasn’t enough, I needed more, so I searched for more. I found a blog on tumblr. @hiilikedragons aka @baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa is no longer active, sadly, but she was at the time, and I had her blog open constantly. I would update it every few hours. Eventually I caved and created this account for myself. And now I’m reading her fics again, and they’re making me just as emotional as they did when I was nineteen.

Also, Cat, if you ever see this, I want you to know that appreciate the smut way more now that I’ve actually had sex.

Hiccstrid Fic That Deserves More Recognition (don't they all): The Lady Knight I'm kidding I swear Hiccup in a Flash I'm sorry but I am so obsessed with this fic and it's unfinished but so good and worth it. Also Thor Help Her. I believe I've mentioned this fic before but I don't have any of you messaging me about the steamy hot tension so I'll keep recommending it. One fic that blows my mind each time I read is Do Flight Simmers Dream of Inflight Emergencies? and I guess I'll stop there but there are so many more

As an OG from this fandom, I can’t wait to see it be brought back to life with the live action making its run. I feel like a mother watching their kid going through a new phase of life. Sorry it’s taken so long to answer but !!!!!!!!! I love you for this ask alkjdhkahgdlks.

What’s awkward is that I don’t really have many titles to give you because aside from the fact I don’t read fanfic that often most of my favourites aren’t just straight up fics, they’re mostly short Tumblr drabbles or fanfic.net exclusives that have since vanished from the face of the earth 😭 but I can definitely still name some.  

So my favourite Drabble writers that come to mind are CuriosityRedux/Hiilikedragons and Avannak - I couldn’t name any particular fics haha but they’re just total nostalgia bombs for me. Hiilikedragons was maybe the first Tumblr blog I ever followed back in 2014 when I joined the fandom, and I used to keep up to date on her countdown to httyd 2 drabbles religiously. There’s something I can’t quite place about Avannak’s writing as well that I’ve always really admired. I think the way they write the characters manages to feel both true to the source material whilst still having their own unique spin on them? without feeling false or out of character? Especially for their httyd 2 era fics I just get lost in those so easily. 

Also she’s not really written many fics I don’t think, I think she mostly just did head canons but I have to mention how much I loooooved edge-of-bizarre’s modern au’s back in 2014, especially the beach fics omg - the entire gang getting up to frat kid activities, deffo my guilty pleasure (and idgaf about an oc usually but I really loved grimhilda and tuffnut 😭)

As for FIC Fics:

One of my favourites that I haven’t read in FOREVER… I don’t actually know the name of or who wrote it lmao. I have mentioned it before on this page though, it’s a short one that takes place right after the events of the second movie and it’s about Astrid’s guilty conscience over leading Drago to Valka’s sanctuary, Stoick’s death, the siege on Berk etc. It’s so good and angsty and I love it so bad, just wish I could find it and read it again (this is also a cry for help, if you know who might’ve wrote it PLEASE let me know I’ll owe u my life)

Some others off the top of my head that are rlly good are Ripped by Tysonrunningfox and The Elements of Surprise by Ecoutez! 

There are so many more writers and fics that I know I love that I’ve forgotten to mention haha, but these are the ones I have on bookmark that I revisit the most! Thank you so much for asking it genuinely made my day when I saw this in my inbox (however many months ago that was now 💀).

Okay so I’m writing a mermaid au, obviously, veeeeeeeery loosely based on The Little Mermaid with some inspiration from an old Hiccstrid fic by @hiilikedragons. For those of you familiar with my fics, you may recognize my OC, Lea, who is—naturally—the mermaid here. It’s actually not historical, it’s modern and Tim is himself. The basic summary is he’s a dumbass who got drunk and/or high while on a rich person yacht, fell off and bonked his head, and our girl’s gotta save him. Unfortunately, he accidentally triggers a mermaid mating season within her, and she can’t return to the ocean permanently until, you guessed it, she has his baby. Her fear of humans, especially male humans, only elevates her desire to get away from this famous human man and return home to the ocean. Things are further complicated by his very public relationship.

Do you have any hiccstrid fanfic recommendations (one's that are similar to HarryPanthers Behind the Mask)?

Oh gosh!

I'm not familiar with the work you've referenced, so I'm not sure I've got comparable recommendations for you. As odd as it sounds, I might write fic, but I don't read a lot of fic. The few that I have read, I'm not sure how to find anymore, as they are from a HTTYD fandom of a very different time and calibur.

I would say anything from hiilikedragons, avannak, tysonrunningfox, nefertsukia; and a fic on ao3 I can't remember the name of. It was fun and lighthearted and one of the most in-character httyd fics I've ever read. It was the gang, right about after the events of the first movie, playing an epic days-long Truth Or Dare war, which kept escalating. I enjoyed it immensely for its pure entertainment value.

That's the best I can do. Sorry I'm not of more help!

At first, I wanted to reply that I can’t really recommend much, because I don’t read much. But going through my bookmarks and favourites produced a decent list I gladly recommend.

1. How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction? Let’s see, 2006? So...10 years old? At that time, my best friend, @thisentertaining, and I used to keep a fanfiction book. I’d write a page, then pass it off to her, and back and forth until we deemed it good enough. I think that practice really shaped both of us into good writers! The funniest thing was that we both thought we had invented this new idea! Nope...4. What is your favourite genre to write for? Romance. Don’t even have to think about it. No matter what other genre I explore, my story will always have a romantic subplot. Or main plot. I love love and I am not ashamed. 

38. If you could collab with any other writer on here, who would it be? (Perhaps this question will inspire some collabs!) If you’re shy, don’t tag the blog, just name it. OH VIOLET ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY SOMETHING?! Lol A collab would be fun to do, but I barely have enough time to write my own stuff these days 😞But, never say never!
