I’m like, so in love with Higurashi cause like it’s pretty much the only story I know right now with a moral that could boil down to “murder is bad” and yet not condescend the viewer
Like in a lot of horror media, the murderer is a crazy sociopath with probably a tragic backstory but usually their motivation is “killing feels good” or “i want revenge on the people who wronged me” and when we get to see things from the murderer’s POV it’s usually some kind of character study to try and understand a sick and twisted mind that’s alien to the viewer
But in Higurashi, almost all of the murders are committed for not only sympathetic, but often mundane reasons. Not mundane as boring, but mundane as in extremely common and understandable. One character is enjoying their life, and then an interloper who they couldn’t have prepared for comes in and makes their life demonstrably worse. We see, from their POV, how this change affects the character and we understand why they are having such a negative reaction to these changes. We understand when they inevitably think, “well if this person would just go away…” and the natural next question “how can I make them go away?” and we’re not surprised when after trying multiple other options, they’re left with murder.
This leads to the audience, who has been spending the whole story with this character, learning about them and relating to them, watching that character become a murderer and realizing that they still relate to them. If they could be driven to do that, what does that say about me?
So when ryukishi07 says “hey murder is bad, please don’t do this” I don’t go “gee sure never would’ve figured that one out,” I usually cry instead.

Finally moved back to my apartment after the fire so didn't have a lot of left over energy this week but I'm really glad I managed to draw something small for the stream. The littlest guys.
