i just reblogged a post about siblings doomed by the narrative and i can't stop thinking about akihiko and ayame......
we all know they're doomed by the narrative in fits, but what if akihiko never became yoha, but they're still doomed anyway?
- akihiko still meets douma, but he doesn't die this time. sanemi arrives in time, or kanae does, or maybe even himejima. either way, he's injured and in pain, but he remains human
- his entire family finds their way to the butterfly estate when they hear he has a long recuperation. the butterfly estate is unused to hosting such a huge family, but they accommodate anyway because its obvious they're worried
- and this time, akihiko reveals everything he knew about what made him want to become a demon slayer. about meeting kanae in okutama, the fight with mimi-reikohime - lower two - and how ayame was kidnapped
- this shifts ayame's perception of her brother a d her father. they hid this from her. they never told her the truth. all this time, she thought her loving oniichan was being selfish under the guise of being noble, but he was being both selfish and noble. and otouchan encouraged his recklessness.
she tears herself from akihiko's bedside, too angry for words. she gently pishes her sisters away, shakes her head and okaachan and refuses to look at otouchan.
she keeps asking herself why they didn't tell her. it made sense when she was younger, but she had been the heir to the forge for four years now. they had plenty of opportunities to tell her.
- maybe that's when she runs into kyoujurou. he sees her full of anger and thinks it's because she doesn't understand akihiko. maybe if she became a demon slayer, she would understand where her older brother is coming from. (that's what he would've wanted if senjurou was in her position.)
- (kyoujurou doesn't realise that senjurou and ayame are not the same people)
- so ayame becomes a kisatsutai trainee out of spite. she still loves her sisters, loves okaachan, but she can't trust otouchan or oniichan anymore
- if oniichan can be selfish, then so can she
- higichi junhiko dies thinking his daughter hates him
- this higuchis still die along with the kamados. this time, it's simply muzan following yoriichi's trail unknowingly. the rest of okutama remains whole. just not the kamados or higuchis.
- tanjirou learns early on not to mention akihiko to ayame. it makes the charcoal in her scent burn, her expression as cold as a winter river. if he has to choose between akihiko and ayame, he chooses ayame.
ayame is the one who is alone. akihiko-san is doing well for himself - he has friends, he has comrades. when it comes down to it, all ayame has left is her shishou, tanjirou and nezuko
- (but he hopes one day ayame and akihiko-san will reconcile. he doesn't like seeing siblings at war like this)
- akihiko looks for ayame in the Butterfly estate after the clusterfuck of a mission that was mount natagumo. he's grateful to tomioka for rescuing his sister - his only sister now - but he's angry that she was sent on that mission. as a mizunoto no less!
- "Ayame!"
"Go away," Ayame says tersely, not even bothering to look up at the figure that burst into the room.
"Aya - "
"Go away. I don't want to see you. Just leave."
Tanjirou, Zenitsu and Inosuke can see how upset Ayame is. She's always angry, but it spikes in the presence of this man that looks so much like her. They all know that Ayame is a gentle person at her core, but there is no evidence of it right now.
The man hesitates by the door. Ayame pulls her blanket over herself and refuses to acknowledge him further.
"Akihiko-san," Tanjirou calls out tentatively. "We'll look after her."
Akihiko hesitates. He meets Tanjirou's gaze - his eyes are startlingly blue, just like Ayame's - and he nods jerkily.
"Thank you," Akihiko says gently. "I'm glad you and Nezuko-chan are well, Tanjirou."
The silence is deafening when he leaves.
"I didn't know Ayame-chan had a brother," Zenitsu says slowly once he hears Ayame fall asleep.
Tanjirou grimaces. For once, it has nothing to do with his injuries.
"Don't ask her about it," he says gravely.
- akihiko tries to reach out to ayame, but she's so stubborn. she runs at every turn and refuses to acknowledge they're siblings. she doesn't care much for breath of water users because of him, although she'll make an exception for tanjirou. akihiko doesn't know when he stopped being the exception
- "She's better off without you," Sanemi grunts to Akihiko.
Sanemi is the only one who understands where Akihiko is coming from. He has a younger sibling in the Kisatsutai too, and refuses to acknowledge him as his brother.
Akihiko doesn't want that for himself and Ayame. They only have each other left. He says as much to Sanemi; he's trying to make his dear friend see the errors of his ways as well.
Siblings should stay together. Like Tanjirou and Nezuko-chan. (Like Kanae and Shinobu would have, if Kanae hadn't died.)
"I can't believe you're allowing this," Sanemi accuses. "That boy and that oni will only bring more suffering to your bratty sister."
Akihiko sighs and shakes his head. "She isn't a brat. And Higuchis and Kamados stay together."
"Sounds like a load of horseshit."
"Whatever, Shinazugawa." A pause. "Talk to your brother nicely. Maybe he'll actually listen to you."
"Right. Because that worked out so well for you, yeah?"
Genya isn't as stubborn as Ayame. At least, that's what Akihiko wants to believe.
- it's painful for both of them, because ayame wants to hate her brother but can't. all akihiko can do is love his little sister, because they're all that's left. he can't get close and she doesn't want him close
- after mugen train, they regain a small hint of what they lost
- akihiko finds ayame sitting alone with tears streaming down her face and quietly sits next to her. he tears the manju in his hands in half and holds the bigger half to her without a word - without even a glance.
rengoku was a friend to him too. but knows very well that ayame knew him better. of course she would grieve. (a part of him is bitter that she never let him close after their family was slaughtered, but it's a bitter pill he's gotten used to swallowing)
- of course, it all shatters apart with fracture. it's foolish of both akihiko and tanjirou to forget that ayame uses her jagged edges to protect herself

“Otaku Elf” gets anime :)
Please forgive my somewhat so short title, that seems a bit clumsy. However it’s great that Akihiko Higuchi’s sensei manga Otaku Elf gets anime adaptation! Higuchi sensei launced the ongoing manga in Kodansha's Shonen Magazine Edge magazine, in June 17 of 2019.
Tumblr media
The manga is licensed by Seven Seas with this Plot:
“Koganei Koito is a teenager who works as an attendant to the Takamimi Shrine. Rumors have it that a deity dwells within the shrine, but the actual resident is an immortal elf who found herself stuck on Earth some four hundred years ago. What's more, the elf is a total shut-in who won't go outside…and has developed a taste for video games! Now the attendants at the shrine have to cater to the elf's love of the most modern gizmos–from handheld games to virtual reality headsets–in this charming fantasy comedy!”
My Say:
It’s interesting how an Elf-something belonging into medieval european folclore-gets supporters in Japan.let’s see how it’ll go:)

Really enjoying another volume of 'Otaku Elf' - we get an archery training montage, a mock court case, and exploding fizzy drinks! The series continues to be good light fun, with a sprinkling of history, and I'm very excited about the anime adaptation that's starting up this April; I hope it's got some of the melancholy edge I've loved.
(If the show is good, you'll know, because I won't shut up about it - immortal elf with social anxiety because of the inexorable passage of time just really works for me, and I'm hoping it'll catch that.)

Now I have 12 milgram ocs, but there are only 10 people with photos and names, so I will introduce all 10 people to you!! (I'd like to skip the relative and murder first because it might be too long—but I'll answer it in the future!🙌)

Otaku Elf Review
Tumblr media
Otaku Elf, also known as Edomae Erufu, is a fantasy comedy anime. It is based on a seven-volume manga illustrated and written by Akihiko Higuchi. Directed by Takebumi Anzai, it is produced by C2C, a studio founded in April 2006. This post will have spoilers.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-fourth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on June 5, 2023.
This series focuses on a sixteen-year-old named Koito Koganei (voiced by Yuka Ozaki). She becomes a shrine maiden, known as miko, at a shrine in Takamini after the death of her grandfather. As a result, she becomes the caretaker of Eldarie "Elda" Irma Fanomene (voiced by Ami Koshimizu). Elda is an immortal and beautiful elf summoned from another world. Koito encounters challenges as Elda is an otaku and hikikomori/shut-in who fears going outside the shrine following an unpleasant interaction many years prior. Even so, she attempts to get Elda to enjoy life outside the shrine.
Originally, I had not been planning to write a review of this series because I'm already reviewing nine other series this season, either about magical girls (Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure and Tokyo Mew Mew New), legendary warriors (Unicorn Warriors: Eternal), VTubers (Kizuna no Allele), a yuri-themed cafe (Yuri Is My Job!), golf girls (Birdie Wing), idols (Oshi No Ko), or other subjects (Alice Gear Aegis Expansion and Skip and Loafer). One motivation for writing this review was because of Sailor Moon, which I'm currently watching, for the first time. It features Rei Hino as a shrine maiden, when she isn't Sailor Mars.
The animation style, comedy of an immortal elf being an otaku meeting a normal person, and the centrality of food, drew me in. The latter is primarily grounded in the cooking by Koyuzu (voiced by Hitomi Sekine), the younger sister of Koito. The same can be said for Koito and Elda's stories often becoming intertwined. Also, there are characters which are portrayed as "cute", like Koito's friend Koma Sakuraba (voiced by Haruka Aikawa).
I liked that every episode of Otaku Elf has some story about past Japanese culture, especially from the Edo period. Of course, Elda does all she can to impress Koito no matter what. This is despite the fact that although she has a laptop, she doesn't know how to use a cell phone. When she does use it, she texts so much that she angers the spirits! Elda does not know everything, however, and doesn't pretend she is all-knowing. She is wise, but not omniscient.
Yordeilla "Yord" Lila Fenomenea (voiced by Rie Kugimiya) and Himawari Kohinata (voiced by Teru Ikuta) are a good addition to the series. Yord is a dark-skinned elf, who is bad at directions, and has an absurd rivalry with Elda over an equivalent of tic-tac-toe. Dr. Akane Sasaki (voiced by Yumi Uchiyama) was similarly a positive character. In fact, she is shown in the seventh episode with Kadoi, getting drunk at a bar, with both of them as an interesting pair of characters together.
There is undeniable yuri subtext in this series, specifically between Koito and Elda, especially shown in the fifth episode. Otaku Elf has a degree of intimacy it can turn to and expand in each episode. As such, the series centers on the importance of spending time with others above everything else. In that way, Otaku Elf is special.
In marked contrast to Birdie Wing, the value of studying, and education as an extension, is emphasized through Koito's intense studying in the sixth episode. The importance of taking breaks and not over-extending oneself is an interrelated theme.
youtube
I like the slice-of-life nature of Otaku Elf. This makes it different from magic-themed series such as Healer Girl and Management of a Novice Alchemist. Similarly, it is nothing like recent slice-of-life anime. The latter includes Let's Make a Mug Too, The Aquatope on White Sand, Teasing Master Takagi-san, and Laid-Back Camp.
The series differs from YuruYuri, Gabriel DropOut, Is the Order a Rabbit?, Kin-iro Mosaic, Non Non Biyori, K-On!, and Azumanga Daioh, in the same genre. Elda is a living history resource, who is good at origami, but can have awful nightmares. There's occasional casual alcoholism. But, it isn't as present as it is in Bocchi the Rock!. The latter features a sick bassist named Kikuri Hiroi, who spends most of her money on booze.
The seventh Otaku Elf episode was one of the best in the entire series. It primarily focused on Koyuzu and her desire to spend more time with her sister, Koito. Some of the funniest sequences in the episode was when she charmed people in a wholesale market so she could get fish for free.
The latter episode was only rivaled by the eighth episode. It focuses on Elda meeting another elf, named Haira (voiced by Mamiko Noto). Some of the best parts were having the historical remembrance shown in anime style resembling wood block art.  The episode features another miko, named Komari, the same age as Koito. Haira is an elf with beauty only matched by Elda. She is older than Elda and Yolde, treating them as her younger sisters. The episode implied Elda is a lesbian, as she said she liked all the teahouse girls during the Edo period.
By the end of the episode, it is clear that the series is uncritical of the fact that Komari was a social influencer and that Haira was a gambler. Even though Komari was critical of Haira for gambling, she tells Koioto that if Haira is doing what she likes, it is ok. On the one hand, this makes sense as Komari had been with Haira since she was young, allowing her to take candid photographs.
On the other, Otaku Elf, by saying that Haira's desire to be a gambler is ok, implies it is a non-issue and downplays it as a problem. Most gambling is prohibited in Japan. There are exceptions for some motor sports and horse racing. The latter is something that Haira said she wanted to do during the episode.
There is an ample culture of gambling in the island nation. The island has a difficult relationship with it. There is inconsistency between reality and law. Some have pushed to completely legalize gambling across the island. Even so, some people, and groups, have objected to expanded gambling in Osaka. They have argued that crime and addiction (to gambling) will rise as a result. Those caught gambling illegally in Japan can face fines or jail time. This hasn't stopped gambling from becoming pervasive, nor the millions afflicted with gambling addiction. The series could have done a better job with this topic.
Despite the problematic approach to gambling, the series often highlights the importance of remembering the past and preserving it. In the ninth episode, Elda reads a manga that has been published for over 30 years. She reorganizes her room due to a ceiling leak (with the help of Koito) and finds an old videotape. Often series only focus on new technology. They act like anything deemed "analog" isn't worth bringing up. In some cases, there is a blend of the "old" and "new". In the case in Steven Universe, a videotape of the protagonist's mother (Rose Quartz) plays an important role in the series.
Similarly in Otaku Elf, Koito sees a videotape for the first time, and goes to her grandmother, who has an old Betamax player, excited to watch a tape of something recorded from before she was born. She learns that her mother, shown on the tape, was also a miko of Elda as well! In a typical scene, Elda embarrasses Koito. She thinks she will be picked up in a "bridal style" pose and runs away as a result. The latter is part of the ongoing yuri undertones of this series, even though Elda and Koito have more of a master-student relationship than anything that is romantic.
youtube
Otaku Elf is much more than a series with endearing character dynamics. It has a protagonist (Elda) who deeply cares about the town she lives in, a neighborhood of Tokyo, I believe. Unlike some other anime this season, such as Alice Gear Aegis Expansion, there's no fan service. Nor are there any characters which are "one-off jokes". In fact, the series, in some ways, counts as an isekai. It has a "genuineness and pleasantness" which evades many anime these days.
The show's animation studio is known for producing over 16 series, including two I'm familiar with: Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (based on a manga by Katsuwo who also wrote Mitsubishi Colors) and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. None of the story elements in either of those series are present in this series.
The voice cast of Otaku Elf is just as strong as the show's opening song. Ami Koshimizu, who voices Elda, also voices the caddy of Aoi in Birdie Wing (Amane Shinjо̄), Mizuki Nakahara in Lycoris Recoil, Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon Crystal, Shiori in Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Yang Xiao Long in RWBY: Ice Queendom, and Konomi Yurikawa in Yurikuma Arashi. Yuka Ozaki, the voice of Koito, has lent her voice as Asuka Toyama in BanG Dream!, while Hitomi Sekine, voice of Koyuzu, voiced characters in Teasing Master Takagi-san, Konosuba, and Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood.
Haruka Aikawa, the voice of Koma, previously voiced a character in Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie. Mamiko Noto, voice of Haira, voiced a supporting character named Kazuki Kosuda in B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time, Hakko in Canaan, Elsa in Gunslinger Girl, Kanon's mother in Love Live! Superstar!!, Shimako Toudou in Maria Watches Over Us, Gin Todo in A Place Further Than the Universe, and Saki Arima in Your Lie in April, and many other roles.
All in all, Otaku Elf is highly relatable to the hundreds of thousands of shut-ins in Japan, which the government believes is a "new social issue", and those elsewhere in the world. It might even draw in an audience from anyone who is living at "home" with their parents, or others living a "hermit-like" existence, being social recluses from society.
In any case, I recommend this series highly. I hope that it receives a second season, even though that is unlikely considering the last nine series by the same studio have not been renewed. Often, companies try and limit corporate risk by planning out each season for only 11-13 episodes. If the show is a success, "additional seasons can be ordered" as noted by Justin Sevakis.
Otaku Elf is currently streaming on HIDIVE.

ANIME RECAP: NEWS VERSO L'INFINITO E OLTRE!
A mali estremi, estremi rimedi dunque!

When will Otaku Elf Episode 7 Be Released?
Otaku Elf (Edomae Elf), a manga by Akihiko Higuchi, was released in 2019 by Kodansha's Shounen Magazine Edge. By June 2022, it had been assembled into six volumes. The show will get an anime adaptation in the spring of 2023. This week will see the release of Otaku Elf Episode 7.
A video game-loving elf dwells eternally at the Takamimi Shrine. Because of this, Elda chooses to play until Koito, the new high priestess, arrives to the shrine rather than bestowing blessings on anyone. While Koito tries to persuade Elda to finish her assignments, the couple is watched.
Tumblr media
In later episodes of Otaku Elf, Koito's Coming-of-Age ritual, in which she dons the furisode inherited from her ancestors, may be portrayed. Over time, Koito's support helps Elda modify her otaku behaviours, strengthening their bond as he becomes less irritated with her. For more information about the release date of this anime you can visit the theanimeupdates website.

what about royalty!au Sanemi and Akihiko?👉👈
ohohohoh! sanekihiko, eh? they are actually such a special lil pairing for me, if only because we see so little of them in fits canon.
and i really wanna write them... TwT so here are some drabbles of them!!! interspersed with some hcs cos why not
- The first time Sanemi meets Higuchi Akihiko, he finds him pretty annoying.
That guy is always hanging around the Butterfly Estate, even when he isn't injured. Talk about not reading the room; he should just fuck off and let the Kochou sisters do their job. He should have better things to do.
Sanemi also hates the way Akihiko stands. It's a little odd - spine straight and shoulders sitting in a way that looks regal. He never fidgets with his hands, an almost well-trained stillness to him that makes him almost look like a painted doll. When he is introduced to Sanemi for the first time (by Masachika), there's a calculated tilt to Akihiko's lips as he bows and murmurs his pleasantries.
It's the little jerk Akihiko does before he bows a little lower that has Sanemi's lips curling into a sneer. Just because he has the kanji for prince in his name doesn't make him an actual prince.
"Shinazugawa-san, it's a pleasure to meet you," Akihiko says politely, before visibly dismissing him to shoot the shit with Masachika.
That fucking asshole.
- of course, their relationship eventually thaws. it was hard to hate the guy when sanemi heard the way akihiko talked about his little sisters. he still thought it was amazingly idiotic of him to run around being a demon slayer when his family was still living, but to each his own.
although sanemi would appreciate it if akihiko didn't make such googly eyes at kanae-san. seriously, his hero worship had to end some time. it was disgusting. (sanemi didn't know if he was more jealous of kanae-san or akihiko.)
- The first time Sanemi starts to suspect that prince isn't just a part of Akihiko's name is when they have a run-in with minor nobility.
If you ask Sanemi, the thought of even having minor nobility is ridiculous. The notion is so antiquated that it makes his stomach cramp. He can't stop himself from scowling, his expression growing darker when he finds Akihiko and his annoying little crow that he calls Kin at the front of the house that was attacked.
Well, Sanemi calls it a house, but it's really a mansion. The garden could fit the entirety of his childhood home, and he wouldn't even know what to do with all this space. There are more rooms than there are shoes that sit in the genkan.
Akihiko is nonplussed, which just irritates Sanemi further. He enters the mansion with enviable grace, and the distraught daughter who is worrying over her little brother. He speaks to the minor noble with elegance and poise, his words carefully chosen and his every movement deliberate. Sanemi feels clunky and rough, like a stray mutt that was dragged in from an alleyway.
"Who are you?" Sanemi asks.
He doesn't mean anything by it. He finds himself surprised at the solemn look on Akihiko's face. To call it serious would be a mistake, because it's more than that. There is an entire lifetime that is left unspoken within those blue eyes that gaze at him.
"I'm no one important." Akihiko's laugh is hollow and doesn't reach his eyes. "Honestly, Sanemi, it's just manners."
Was it really just manners, when he had known exactly how to refer to the minor noble?
Sanemi doubts so. Then again, a prince wouldn't be a Demon Slayer. That's just absurd.
- masachika and kanae are the only people akihiko tells about his status as minor royalty. it's nothing, all things considered. akihiko has abdicated from his title, so he isn't any better than any other commoner. he finds himself more used to being called higuchi than o-akihiko-sama.
at his core, akihiko is just a simple boy. he isn't a prince at all. (even if he is.)
- what's the use of a prince who cannot even protect his younger sisters?
- "Why Akihiko?" Sanemi wonders aloud.
Akihiko pauses in his swings, tilting his head at Sanemi curiously. Sweat glistens on his bare chest, sliding down pale skin and dripping to the dirt. Sanemi carefully doesn't let his gaze wander, eyes fixed to Akihiko's face as emotions flicker across his features.
Three became two. Masachika rots in the ground and Sanemi is a Hashira. Akihiko is still Akihiko.
Akihiko laughs, resting the blunt edge of his bokken on his shoulder. "You're asking me? I didn't exactly choose my name, you know."
Sanemi scowls. "Just asking."
A shadow passes over Akihiko's face. His dark hair - as black as ink - is plastered to the back of his neck. It's getting long; he'll be asking Kanae-san or Sanemi himself to help him trim it.
"A name's just a name," Akihiko insists. "Don't think too much about it."
What's kuge mean? Sanemi wants to ask. He heard Kanae-san tease Akihiko about it the other day, but all he knew was that Akihiko had sputtered like a child and hurriedly shushed her. He doesn't know they the thought of Akihiko having secrets with Kanae-san makes him burn on the inside.
"What does your name mean?" Akihiko asks, flicking a sweaty lock of hair out of his eyes.
Sanemi shrugs. "Does it matter?"
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet."
"Huh? You making fun of me?"
"No." Akihiko lobs his bokken at Sanemi's head half-heartedly. Sanemi snatches it out of the air, rising to his full height. "It just means that even if you called a rose something else, it would still be a rose. It would still smell the same, and still be just as beautiful."
Sanemi clicks his tongue against the roof of his mouth, inexplicably irritated. "Never heard that before. It sounds like bullshit."
"Maa... others might call you Shinazugawa-sama, but you're still a grumpy old bastard, Sanemi."
The bokken whistles through the air. Akihiko let's out a yelp as the flat of the wooden plate cracks against his ass. He jumps a foot in the air, then whirls around to kick Sanemi's side.
Sanemi is more than ready for it. He traps Akihiko's leg against his side and takes a step forward to unbalance him. Of course, Akihiko being a Breath of Water user means he doesn't fall over, although he does hook an arm around Sanemi's neck so he doesn't land on his ass.
Belatedly, Sanemi realises that they're far too close like this. He hadn't thought this through.
"I don't get it," Sanemi says instead of a scathing retort.
This close, he can see Akihiko's unblemished skin, the curl of his eyelashes. Red paints Akihiko's cheeks like streaks of paint, and his blue eyes are wide.
Sanemi clarifies, "About the thing you said earlier."
It was in another language. He didn't know Akihiko spoke anything other than Japanese.
He realises there isn't a lot he knows about Akihiko. He knows the Breath of Water user has five sisters and two loving parents. He knows he came from a village somewhere in the northern part of Tokyo. He knows that Akihiko rarely scowls when met with civilians, but doesn't hold back his expressions when amongst Kisatsutai members - or at least he hadn't with Sanemi and Masachika. He knows Akihiko grieves stoically, but cries openly.
That's just about all he knows. He doesn't know what Akihiko did before he became a Demon Slayer, why he became a Demon Slayer when his family is still alive. He doesn't even know what kanji makes up Akihiko's name.
Akihiko chuckles. It's quiet and slow, and Sanemi can feel it in the depths of his chest.
"It means," murmurs Akihiko, "that whether your name is Sanemi or not, you're still you. You'd still be beautiful. Just like a rose."
The tension in the air is palpable. Sanemi can barely breathe because of it.
This is the moment he should let go. Akihiko should stumble away with an irate complaint - then he'll storm off while flipping Sanemi off.
Instead, Akihiko looks at him like he's something precious. Something beautiful and fragile and untouchable.
His arm around Sanemi's neck loosens, but he still rests his calloused palm against his sensitive nape.
"I shouldn't," Akihiko breathes.
His gaze darts downwards. Sanemi feels hot all over when Akihiko licks his lips; he's staring at Sanemi's lips.
"Pussy," Sanemi snarls quietly.
The heat in his chest won't go away.
"What's in a name?" Akihiko counters, then surges forward to press his lips to Sanemi's.
Sanemi's grip on Akihiko's leg tightens.
- in the end, it doesn't matter if akihiko is nobility, royalty or commoner. kuge or not, he still finds himself ensnared in douma's grasp, and he still falls to his younger sister's blade.
- sanemi finds another person to grieve. another thing to fuel his anger against onis. they take and take - and they always take from him.
- "What's in a name?" Sanemi says to Akihiko's younger sister, years later.
Higuchi Ayame pauses. Her blue eyes are almost the exact copy of Akihiko's, although the corners of them are harsher. She had always glared much more than Akihiko ever did.
"That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet," Ayame completes slowly. "Akihiko-nii's favourite quote."
"Quote?"
"From Shakespeare. He was an English poet in the sixteenth century. Or seventeenth. I always forget."
Sanemi knows now that he and Akihiko would have never worked out. He knows more about kuge and buke than he did as a sixteen-year-old. The way Akihiko held himself - the way Ayame holds herself now - makes so much sense.
Not just nobility, no.
Royalty.
Akihiko was royalty, and he still recited poetry to him. Still kissed him like Sanemi was precious and important.
His old scars had never faded, but this particular unseen scar ached fiercer today.
Sanemi runs an absentminded hand through his hair. "Do kuge ever marry commoners?"
Ayame blinks. It's such an innocent expression that the mirage of Akihiko shatters in an instant.
She isn't Akihiko. Akihiko is gone. Permanently this time.
"No," she answers honestly, "but Akihiko-nii wasn't kuge when he joined the Kisatsutai. It's just a title anyway."
Her words and her actions don't match up. If the rumours are to be believed, then that Kamado brat is buke. That makes him more Ayame's equal than Sanemi had ever been to Akihiko.
And still they dance around each other like two nitwits.
"It's just a title," Sanemi echoes.
He tells himself it isn't for her benefit. (He knows he's lying.)

More slice-of-life adventures with a shut-in elf and historical asides about how the modern day isn't so different from the way people have always lived. It's a cute volume, and I do enjoy their cozy relationships and bickerings.

One night Satoshi spots the "Daimax Band" he got from Dande, the strongest Pokémon Trainer in the Galar region, suddenly starting to glow on its own. Meanwhile, the Galar region has been experiencing a phenomenon where Pokémon are Daimaxing in places where it's normally impossible for them to do so. To solve the Daimax mystery, Satoshi and Go decided to visit the Galar region and see Professor Magnolia, the leading authority on Daimax research, but on their way there the duo got separated while in a forest shrouded in thick mist, where they encountered some mysterious Pokémon. MAGNOLIA MAGNOLIA MAGNOLIA AAAAHHHH!! Also I, find it weird that the daimax band seems to be reacting in Kanto? It shouldn’t? Hmmmm.
For the next two episodes we only have title and staff list, no summaries. Possibly to avoid spoilers.
