The Great House of Goldstone

The members of House Goldstone are highly respected for their wealth and influence, and their economic power has made them a major player in the empire's politics. They are known for their shrewd business sense and willingness to take calculated risks to expand their wealth and power.

■ Exterior

It is not just a change in the exterior design, but it is intended to demonstrate excellent performance in functions, aerodynamics, cooling, etc. The front bumper is integrated with the spoiler, and the grill set in the nose section and the balance panel section with a sufficient opening area are designed to send a lot of fresh air to the newly built intercooler for racing built in the rear of the bumper. Massive, castle-like hotels of the late 1800′s - early 1900′s. All of these buildings are long gone. From top to bottom, Castle Edward Hotel, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, burned down in 1931. An original stone wall and walkway are still can be seen from neighboring Lakeside Blvd. South Mountain Manor Hotel, Wernersville, Pennsylvania. Remnants of the property remain but the structure itself was razed in 1962. Hotel Weirs, Weirs Beach, Laconia, New Hampshire, burned down in 1924 and was replaced by a motel and arcade, which still remain today. The Grand Hotel of Highmount, the Catskills, New York was built in 1881 and demolished in 1966. Kaaterskill Hotel, also of the Catskills, was built in 1881 and burned down in 1924. At its peak, it boasted 1200 rooms and was one of the largest hotels in the U.S.

Recently bereaved, Lord Highmount has organised a seance to contact his dead sons at his small island off the Devon coast. But his guests have secrets, and when they’re cut off by the storm, things start to go wrong at the house. Not all ghosts are dead... My rating: 3/5

Sometimes, you don’t like a book because it’s badly written. Sometimes, you don’t like a book because it’s not your personal thing. Sometimes, you don’t like a book because the idea about that book you got in your head after picking it up at the library is very, very different to the actual narrative of the book you’re holding in your hands. This book is the latter - I was expecting something a bit more ghost-y or horror-y, not what is essentially a mystery/spy themed narrative that happens to have ghosts in it.

Our main characters are Donovan and Kate, both employees of the British secret service sent to the house for mysterious reasons to check out what’s going on. Donovan’s in the military, Kate’s more of a secret codebreaker type. It feels to me like more of a World War 2 profession than a World War 1 one, but what do I know about the military side of WW1 history, it’s nothing. I was impressed with Kate - it’d be really easy in this type of story to make her into that annoying not-like-other-girls character with a modern attitude towards concepts like feminism, but while she’s spunky and opinionated it felt a lot more grounded in the era. Donovan’s very noir, he’s a dark and edgy guy but not to the point of being annoying or uninteresting. Their different outlooks added a lot to the narrative; I particularly liked how Kate, who can casually see ghosts, added her own perspective to scenes in this Very Haunted House.

The central mystery of this narrative is pretty much ‘what the hell is happening in this house’, starting at ‘are any of these mediums real’ and deepening as people start to get attacked by a masked figure. It’s more And Then There Were None than a slasher, though. Also, there’s tons of ghosts. Part of the fun for me was that Kate being able to see ghosts adds another layer to the fake mediums thing - we know that ghosts are real and can at least sort of communicate with the living, so there is a real possibility that the mediums we see could be genuine.

So why wasn’t I so keen? Two reasons. One, I’m not really into mystery as a genre, and as I said above, I had built this book up as being more horror in my head. That’s a personal preference thing, though. The other reason is that I found the mystery a little too much to follow. There are a lot of characters wandering around, I had trouble keeping track of who was who and what their motivations could be and how they connect to the other characters. I don’t think that really helped the mystery along much, which is a shame, because in other ways this book was perfectly fine, just not my personal thing.
