siigh it feels kind of silly asking for life advice from a creepypasta blog (I MEAN THIS IN THE NICEST SILLIEST WAY EVER i love ur blog) but im just curious on how u go about like . college n having to pay for it and a job and such .. especially w the state of the economy 💔 im going into community college soon however im low key frightened bc 1 money and 2 i don't entirely know what i want my major to be (even though i want to go in for art/writing or something along those lines but again MONEY) .. and honestly you have a very nice way of going abt things from what i have seen so im just curious
HI OKAY for starters. I’ve been working and saving since I was 16 yrs old, california minimum wage is higher than average, i went to community college then transferred, I live with family, and I commute bc I’m only 30 minutes from my university. I’m in a very very privileged position that I’m very grateful for because of this, so even though I pay for all my schooling and personal expenses, money hasn’t been a massive concern for me. I wanna be very transparent about that! Regardless, I still have some input
I also have a TLDR at the end bc I wrote way too much
Going to community college is already the best route! I did that and it saved me THOUSANDS on tuition, commuting, and housing - i also usually maxed out my financial aid because my moms income was low enough. Even if you think you might not qualify for financial aid, go see your community college counselor or financial aid advisors the first month of school and ask for help!!! They will know so much more and it’ll guide you a ton. They can even show you how to do things on your own through their websites
Scholarships r another thing. Idk about your location but both of my schools websites have a scholarship page where you can just endlessly scroll through hundreds of scholarships and apply. I would go to cafes, listen to music, and just submit application after application. I’ve gotten thousands in scholarships cuz of it (but also please get involved in school activities!!! It helps with these applications. Tutor English, be a TA, join clubs!!! I HIGHLY recommend joining some sort of competitive team. I do competitive speech and it’s been amazing and looks beautiful on applications and resumes)
Finding a job on campus helps too. I used to intern as a speech coach at my CC, and it paid a little above minimum wage, was super easy, made me amazing connections with my faculty, and I’ve essentially secured a position as a professor at my community college once I graduate with my masters LOL . I was also working 2 jobs at this time(my normal job + the speech job) and in all honesty, it was a lot to balance - BUT ITS WORTH IT.
Make!! CONNECTIONS!! NETWORK!! Talk to professors!! Ask them about programs and student aid and things they think you’ll be suited for!! Ask them for different positions at school!!!
Make sure you’re focusing on your GEs for the first year… I understand wanting to take tons of art classes since that’s what you wanna major in and you’re passionate about it, but taking your GEs first helps you play around in different fields and ensure you know what you want. And again, opens opportunities because the more you do, the more you meet, the more doors open. It’s better if you realize you wanna change career paths in CC, since it’s so much cheaper ! And again, if you think you want to explore smth new, DO IT WHILE ITS CHEAPER!!!! It’s okay!!! I changed my major 1.5 semesters in!!! …AND TAKE THE HARD CLASSES FIRST HAHAH I took my math and science GEs early on, and now I’m free from that - but that’s also cuz my major doesn’t require math or science..
I don’t know where you live but the university system in California is CSUs (California state universities) and UCs (universities of California). I’m going to a CSU because they’re significantly cheaper . DONT LET PEOPLE MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO GO TO THE EXPENSIVE OPTION JUST CUZ ITS MORE PRESTIGIOUS OR WHATEVER. Life after university is also about the connections, internships, experience, and person you become rather than a nice school with nothing else to back up your growth and learning
I don’t know your living situation so I’m hesitant to give this advice, so please take it with a grain of salt. But once you transfer, if you could transfer to a commuter school(aka a school within 30 mins from you) and live with family for cheap/no rent, I highly recommend it. housing is easily the most expensive part of university. AGAIN, take this with a grain of salt because if living with family isn’t viable then that’s okay too, and all the previous advice is just as applicable
Soz I’m superrrr rambling im just really passionate about school and education and making things as easy as possible (with healthy challenges).
TLDR; use the hell out of all student resources. Student aid, financial aid, grants, scholarships. Get familiar with all school resources (some have free student pantries, free health care, free bus passes) Get acquainted with your counselors and professors. Find a job on campus. Make connections with faculty and peers. Focus on GEs. Don’t let people pressure you into doing more expensive programs just because they’re more prestigious—do what fits your goals. Maybe try a commuter school if possible.
Anyway. You’re gonna be okay. I was scared shitless before starting college and nearly passed out and threw up on the first day LOL but genuinely college is what you make of it. Please get involved, take care of yourself, ask for help, and be optimistic! You got this everything is gonna work out for you I promise

Tears of a Villainess ⭑˚🗡️⭑ 𝑎 𝑛𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟

Reincarnation isn't as great as it sounds, especially when you've been reborn as none other than the villainess. Fated to die if you stand in the heroine's way, you immediately resolve to distance yourself from the plot. As long as you have nothing to do with any of the relevant characters, surely, you'll be able to avoid an untimely death. But in a horrible turn of events, the heroine ends up wanting to get close to you. Are you really doomed to meet the villainess' tragic end? Or is there an even more sinister fate that awaits you?
previous | story masterlist | next
After Annabel leaves, your father excitedly bounds over, and it’s clear that he seems to think the lesson went well.
“So?” he hums. “Did the two of you get along? She came highly recommended. Many refer to her as a prodigy. In that sense, you have a lot in common. Both bright young ladies with a promising future ahead of them.”
Dude. I may be smarter than average, but please stop hyping me up so much. I’m not gonna be the next Sir Isaac Newton.
You awkwardly scratch your cheek. “Yes, Annabel’s a very good tutor. I can see why she has such glowing reviews. I wasn’t at all dissatisfied with her teaching style, it’s just that…”
“Hm? What is it?”
Your father leans in closer, eyes wide and attentive, still with a smile spread across his lips. Honestly, he kind of gives off Golden Retriever vibes, and you hate to disappoint him when he’s so clearly excited about all this… but you don’t exactly have a choice.
Annabel hates your guts. This is probably torture for her, and it’d be unfair to keep doing this.
“I think she’s extremely smart, and talented, but I personally don’t think she’s a good fit for me,” you admit. “Unless I was mistaken, she didn’t seem entirely comfortable being here. I did my best to be welcoming towards her, but I fear my infamous reputation had long since reached her ears. I’m worried she’s forcing herself to follow through with this because you personally requested her, even though she doesn’t actually want to tutor me.”
“Why wouldn’t she be comfortable around you?” your father asks, and his smile drops for the first time. “You’re so charming and vibrant. And since you’re both involved in scholarly pursuits, your like-mindedness should bring you closer. Not to mention that you’re of similar age. Don’t you think you’re reading into it too much, my dear? I think you’re being overly critical of yourself. Who wouldn’t enjoy the company of a fine young woman such as yourself?”
Uh, probably someone who’s been bullied and harassed by this supposedly ‘fine young woman’. By the sounds of it, quite badly.
Also, you’re not really sure why he’s surprised that people don’t like you. Hasn’t he heard some of the rumors circulating in regards to his daughter? Then again, both your mother and father spoil you rotten, so in their eyes, you can do no wrong. You’ve been really enjoying having such loving and easygoing parents, but they’re partly to blame for the villainess turning out the way she did. Clearly, she wasn’t ever reprimanded for her behavior, nor did she learn the meaning of the word no.
Anyways. That’s neither here nor there. The villainess is gone, and you’ve taken her place. Needless to say, you have no intention of tormenting poor Annabel any further. She doesn’t need to be bound to you in service when it so clearly brings her immense pain.
“It’s alright,” you reassure. “Not everyone gets along. I won’t take it personally. She must have heard some things that made her wary of me, and that’s fine. I’m trying to change my ways, but I can’t expect everyone to suddenly like me. I’m sure I can find another qualified tutor. They may not be as young and prodigal as she is, but that’s fine. I’ll cooperate and do my best to learn, no matter who it is.”
“But I just don’t understand. What could have possibly displeased her, especially after you gave her such a cordial welcome? Why, it all sounds rather ungrateful on her part. She’s under our employ. What gives her the right to act out and treat you poorly?”
Your father is angry now. When it comes to you, you’ve learned that he’s far too soft to discipline you properly. The worst punishment you got after breaking off an engagement one-sidedly was having to do some math problems—which he’s since been celebrating you for nonstop.
No, your father likely won’t ever get angry with you. Neither will your mother, for that matter. They’re far too enamored with you. You’re their precious only child, their sparkling star amidst the night sky, or whatever other artsy-fartsy expression they’ll use to describe you. In any case, you mean the world to them, and they handle you like glass.
But they’re not above getting angry at other people. And based on how fast your father’s expression is darkening, you can tell that he doesn’t take too kindly to this supposed affront.
For the first time, the words this sweet, seemingly harmless man utters are enough to make you shiver.
“If that woman dared to disrespect you in your own home, to try and hold you responsible for her foolish, prejudiced beliefs, then I think I’d like to have a word with her family. And I’ll make it clear to them that she shouldn’t dare offer her services as a tutor ever again.”
You gulp. Oh, shit. Daddy’s actually serious this time.
If you end up being the reason Annabel loses her job, it goes without saying that she’ll just hate you even more. Which is pretty counterproductive. Not to mention that you’d feel downright awful, because it sounds like the villainess has already ruined her life more than enough.
In that case… fine. Perhaps you’ll just have to consider another approach. If firing her won’t end well, then the best you can do is try to figure out what the villainess did to her and mend your relationship. After all, you set out to restore your reputation, and that’s exactly what you’ll do. Even Annabel, who clearly despises the villainess, can’t possibly resist your charms. Everyone loves a good character redemption arc, right?
Well, in theory.
“O-On second thought, you’re right, father. I suppose I was being overly critical of myself. I may very well have just imagined the whole thing. She never outright stated she didn’t like me, after all. Like you said, I was perhaps reading into things too much. Haha.”
You chuckle awkwardly, and much to your relief, it only takes a few seconds for your father’s smile to return.
“Don’t worry, my sweet.” He ruffles your hair affectionately. “You’re adored by all. Didn’t you see how eager Rowan was to marry you? And he’d only just met you for the first time. Everyone who basks in your presence is all the better for it. So, don’t ever put yourself down. You’re as perfect as can be.”
Man. Unconditional love really is something, huh?
“I’m glad to hear that your lesson went well, and that you’re satisfied with your tutor’s teaching abilities. I can hardly wait to see how much more that beautiful mind of yours will develop,” he beams.
As always, he walks off with a spring in his step, looking as if he’s about to turn into a Disney princess and start singing at any given moment.
Well, it’s good to know that he’s happy, at least. And it’s not like you have a problem with Annabel, but you hate knowing that she’s being forced into something that makes her feel like shit.
Hopefully those feelings won’t persist for long. Hopefully—with the power of god, anime, and rizz on your side—you’ll be best pals in no time flat.
…but something tells you it won’t be that easy.
Tumblr media
“I heard your first tutoring session went splendidly, so to celebrate, I reserved a table at one of the most exclusive restaurants in town. They’re usually all booked up, but I pulled a few strings here and there.”
That was what your mother proudly announced before whisking you out of the manor for a candlelit dinner. Apparently your father is tied up with business and he couldn’t spare the time tonight—for which he apologized profusely, tears brimming his eyes—but your mother waved him off and insisted it was fine. She said it would just have to be a ‘girl’s night’ for the two of you.
Anyways, you’re definitely not complaining. All of the meals you eat at home are hand-made by talented cooks, but she’s taking you out someplace where there’s supposedly even better food? Talk about hitting the jackpot.
It took a while to get ready, though. You’re still not good at all this fancy high society stuff. Half the time you unwittingly wear dresses that are far too casual for entertaining guests and the like. One time you wandered through the halls in your nightgown and your mother nearly had a goddamn heart attack.
But with Fiona’s help, you changed into something suitable for a classy evening at a luxurious restaurant, and presently, you’re stepping down from the carriage—looking hot as hell, might you add.
“I’m stunning,” you state, staring at your reflection from outside the carriage window. “I always knew I was, but… damn. It’s no wonder Rowan wants to wife me up.”
It’s not technically narcissism, since this isn’t your real body to begin with. Or at least, that’s how you try to justify shamelessly checking yourself out.
“Yes, yes, dear, you’re as breathtaking as always,” your mother agrees, impatiently tapping you on the shoulder. “But let’s hurry along. We have a reservation. We wouldn’t want to be late.”
“Okie-dokie.”
The carriage didn’t stop too far from the restaurant, but it’s a bit of a pain to tackle the cobblestone path with the stupidly high heels you’re wearing. They’re not practical at all. If it were up to you, you’d be in sneakers right now.
Nevertheless, you successfully make the trek, and a servant is posted by the door, ready to open it with a charming smile.
“Welcome, ladies,” he greets pleasantly. “Thank you so much for joining us tonight. You have a reservation, I presume?”
“Yes, of course,” your mother nods. “For Countess [Last Name]. Two guests. Myself and my lovely daughter.”
“Excellent. We’re honored to have such esteemed guests dining with us. We’ll do everything in our power to answer each and every one of your requests. We hope to provide you with a lasting, memorable experience.”
He holds the door open as he steps aside. His smile hasn’t even wavered once. Plus, his ass-kissing is on point. Truly a professional.
“I bet he says that to all the guests,” you whisper to your mother as you step inside.
She nudges you in the ribs. “Hush, now. This restaurant is highly exclusive. I was fortunate enough to find a last-minute reservation. Your father’s reputation truly precedes him. Not everyone gets the chance to eat here.”
You can kind of understand why, because holy hell is this place decked-out. Your manor was already luxurious enough. Plus, the one time you went to a party and ran into Flynn, that place was pretty damn extravagant, too. You thought you’d just about seen everything there is to see in terms of wealth and grandeur, but apparently, there’s always bigger fish in the sea.
You soon discover that the reason this restaurant is so exquisitely ornate is because it’s owned by the most powerful duke in the entire kingdom. The king’s famed right-hand man and most devoted retainer. The duke is getting up there in age, but he refuses to relinquish his title to any of his children or grandchildren, not until he officially passes. He was in the previous king’s service too, so his seniority and reputation can’t be understated.
No wonder this restaurant is so exclusive. It’s just shy of belonging to the king himself.
“Um, is it really okay for us to be here?” you ask, fidgeting nervously as you sit down. “It sounds like it’s a huge deal. Shouldn’t we have saved this outing for a more, I don’t know, special occasion?”
Your mother snaps open her folding hand fan. “Nonsense. You must already know that your father is a very impressive man. He’s made quite the name for himself, in just a short span of time. Our household wasn’t especially famous historically, but thanks to his many accomplishments, we are gaining steadfast. And I simply couldn’t let this momentous occasion go to waste. There was an opening, so naturally, I jumped on it.”
“Uh-huh…”
With the way she describes securing a reservation at a restaurant, you would think she just led an army to victory or something. Seriously, it’s not that deep.
But you suppose you should be grateful, because it’s true that not everyone gets to dine here. You may as well profit from this, erm, momentous occasion and stuff yourself silly with all the finest meals this kingdom has to offer.
Oh, yeah. Bring on the food, baby.
You wish you could say you exerted some self-restraint. You wish you could say you acted the part of a picture-perfect lady, equipped with all the poise, grace, and etiquette that would be expected of someone in your position.
But realistically, what follows is almost too grotesque to put into words.
Everything is fine at first. You take the first few bites of your meal, and by god, it tastes absolutely sublime. You swear your taste buds have never been happier. It’s like tasting a slice of heaven. It’s so delicious that you can hardly believe this is real life.
The more you eat, the more you seem to lose yourself in the moment. Your mother occasionally chimes in, reminding you to pace yourself. She worries that you’re not savoring the food enough, but you are savoring it. You can’t seem to stop savoring it. And so, you order more. Then more. More, and more, and more, and more.
Simultaneously, you’re treating yourself to the lovely wine they keep serving. You don’t even have to ask for more of that. By the time your glass is empty, someone comes along to fill it up again, and it ends up being filled quite a few times that night.
Perhaps too many times, because the nobles seated at others tables are starting to whisper amongst themselves. They stare at you with unmatched revulsion, and you realize, with a pang of shame, that you’ve been gorging yourself without a care in the world. You’ve been acting like you’re in the comfort of your own home, protected by those familiar walls, when the reality is that everything you do or say in public is being scrutinized by those watching.
The realization comes crashing down on you, and suddenly, the beautiful illusion is broken. You’re painfully aware that everyone is judging you.
And then your stomach gives up.
Everything after that point is a blur. You briefly hear your mother calling out to you, with a look of sheer horror on her face, but her voice soon fades into the background on account of you literally booking it out the door.
The servant posted at the front cries out in a panic, similar to the way your mother reacted, but it’s far too late to turn back now. Your body is doing things, whether you like it or not.
“Pardon me,” the servant frets, “are you quite alright? Shall I fetch you some water, or a hot towel, or perhaps—”
Cue you puking your guts out, and as it so happens, right onto one of the nice rose bushes decorating the entrance.
“Oh, dear heavens!”
He doesn’t seem to know how to handle such a gruesome sight and proceeds to rush into the restaurant, probably to get help, or maybe to have a quick mental breakdown. Could be either one.
You fall to your knees and groan. Well, that was more than enough humiliation for one night. You’re definitely ready to go home now, and for some reason, you get the feeling that you won’t be allowed to come back.
The cold air helps, though. So does the peace and quiet. That atmosphere inside was way too stifling, to be honest. It’s different than being back at the manor, where you’re not being judged for your every action. You’re in the comfort of family and friends (well, you consider the servants to be your friends, at least), and people aren’t glaring at you left and right. You hate to admit it, but being the target of everyone’s hatred is harder than you thought it’d be. Especially since you’re not to blame for any of the villainess’ misdeeds.
Although you are to blame for tonight’s incident. Yeah. This one is most certainly your fault.
You take a few moments to try and soothe your poor stomach, which seems to be terribly angry with you right now. Not that you can really blame it. Your gluttony got the best of you, admittedly. This time, you might actually have to be bedridden. Like, for realsies.
You thought that having to run out of the restaurant and puke in the rose bushes would be the unfortunate highlight of tonight’s outing, but apparently, you haven’t suffered enough embarrassment yet.
“My lady? Is everything okay?”
A familiar voice. Oh, no. That means it’s someone you know. That means it’s someone you know—and unless you’re mistaken, it’s not someone you planned on running into ever again.
Carmine approaches you with a frown. Goddammit. Of all the people to stumble across you in such a sorry state. This guy always seems to show up when you’ve just made a damn fool of yourself.
You lift your head and barely stifle another groan. “U-Ugh. Yes, I’m fine. I’m perfectly… fine. Don’t worry about me. I’m sure you must be busy with all sorts of knight… stuff. Don’t let me take up your time.”
You try to wave him off, but surprise surprise, he doesn’t leave.
Perfect. Just what you wanted.
“I remember you,” Carmine blinks. “We ran into each other once before. When you tried to apprehend that thief all by yourself. Goodness. Are you ill? You seem to have—”
“—puked,” you finish for him, noting the way his brow creases. “Yeah, I puked. The food in there didn’t exactly agree with my stomach. Um. Probably because I ate way too much of it. Like, a concerning amount.”
“Well, uh… that isn’t good,” he adds, rather unhelpfully, in your opinion.
“No. No, it isn’t.”
You sigh and hug your arms around your knees. The ground feels nice and cool. It’s helping abate your nausea, even if only a little.
“My lady, you shouldn’t sit there,” Carmine insists. He offers you his hand—which seems to be a recurring theme between the two of you. “Please. Stand up for the time being. I know you aren’t feeling well, but I fear you’ll catch a cold.”
“If I stand up, I’ll puke again,” you state matter-of-factly.
“Pardon my rudeness, but I don’t think that’s how it works.”
“Shall I prove you wrong?”
“I’d rather you didn’t, but all the same, please try to stand up.”
After a brief pause, you begrudgingly take Carmine’s hand, and he pulls you to your feet. You sway unsteadily for a few seconds, but he keeps an arm firmly locked around your waist to hold you in place. The vertigo seems to settle quickly enough, and much to your relief, you don’t puke again.
Carmine offers a small smile. “There. Isn’t that better? A pretty lady like you shouldn’t be sitting on the ground like that. It’s beneath you.”
“Technically, the ground is beneath everyone,” you point out.
He blinks, clearly pondering your words. It was a pretty crappy joke, to be honest. Definitely not your best work.
And yet, Carmine still laughs.
“I-Is that so?” he chuckles. You hate to admit it, but he has a nice laugh. It’s low, and it rumbles a bit, resonating in the pit of his stomach. But it sounds nice. It’s comforting, somehow. Pleasant.
It’s a far cry from the emotionless demeanor he showed when executing the villainess.
This side of him is definitely better. He’s pretty stoic most of the time, but he would let his guard down around the heroine like this as well. I guess it’s good to know that he doesn’t dislike me, at least.
You take a deep breath. You’re starting to feel better now that you purged all that excess food from your stomach. It’ll take a while to get back to your full strength, but at least you’re not puking on any more bushes.
For now, anyway.
“I’m going to drink so much water when I get home,” you sigh tiredly. “Probably enough to make me puke all over again.”
“Well, it’s good to have a plan, I suppose.” Carmine hastily clears his throat, in an attempt to keep the amusement out of his voice. “Please forgive me. Our meeting last time was so brief, and I was occupied with arresting a criminal, that I never stopped to properly introduce myself. My name is Carmine Mortis. It’s a pleasure to properly meet you, my lady. Apologizes, once again. I hope you aren’t too offended by my lack of manners.”
Of course, you’ve known who he is from the very start, so you feign ignorance and smile while nodding your head.
“I’m [Name]. Daughter of Count and Countess [Last Name]. It’s a pleasure to meet you too. And don’t worry. You can probably tell, but I’m not too fussy about manners and the like.”
“Now, what could have possibly given me that impression?”
You point towards the rose bushes. “That. The yucky stuff that came out of my tummy. I’m willing to bet other ladies would have sooner died than puked in public.”
“It’s a natural reaction,” Carmine reassures. “When something disagrees with our stomachs, it just happens. You shouldn’t be ashamed. Are you starting to feel a bit better now, at least?”
“Yeah,” you admit. “A lot better.”
Before Carmine can say anything else, the door swings open, and out rushes your frantic mother, along with a handful of servants.
“[Name]!” she exclaims, grabbing hold of your shoulders firmly. “Are you alright, my dear? Goodness! You gave me such a fright, taking off like that!”
“Don’t worry. I puked, so I feel way better now.”
The servant from earlier points a shaky finger towards the rose bushes you vandalized, and beside him, his colleagues outwardly gasp. Fair enough, it is pretty disgusting. Still. They could try to reel in their shock a bit.
Your mother steps back to frown. “O-Oh, my. Well… there’s no changing what’s already done. You must have been feeling very sick. I worry for your body lately. You seem to be falling ill far too often.”
You wouldn’t exactly call eating a grotesque amount falling ill, but whatever. At least she’s not mad. Probably quite embarrassed, based on her expression, but not mad.
“Here,” one of the servants says, passing you a cold glass of water. “Drink this, if you’d like.”
Another servant hands you a hot towel at the same time, and fortunately, you don’t have chunks of puke all over your face or anything, but you wipe your lips off all the same. The cold, refreshing water hitting the back of your throat helps. You no longer feel like death, in any case. It’s a start.
The servants then politely ask you all to step aside while they deal with the… mess you left on the rose bushes. You can hear some of them struggling to keep from gagging aloud as they clean the area. Sorry, bros.
“I don’t think we’ll be invited back,” you remark.
“No,” your mother sighs, “I don’t think so either. Not that they extend invitations in the first place. But it’ll probably take a miracle to book another reservation here.”
“I’m sorry, mommy.”
“It’s alright, my darling. I did warn you to pace yourself, but… I’m just glad you’re not too sick. That’s what’s most important.”
She smiles lovingly and ruffles your hair, just as your father so often does. It really is incredible to have such supportive parents. Your real parents, back in your old world, could be quite strict at times, but they were good people at their core. You know they loved you to the moon and back. It’ll never quite be the same, but it’s nice to feel that familial warmth again. You’ve been missing it.
Your mother then turns towards Carmine and tilts her head inquisitively. “Pardon me, young knight. Did you have business here?”
“Oh, he was just worried about me because he saw I wasn’t feeling well, so he came over to check in. He kept me company while you were sorting things out inside,” you say.
“It was my pleasure,” Carmine bows. “I’m relieved to hear that Lady [Name] is starting to feel better. I wish I could say I was able to help, but she’s a strong, resilient young woman. She regained her spirits all on her own.”
The ass-kissing never stops, apparently. Well, it’s his job to protect people, you suppose. He must be used to this sort of thing. You feel kind of weird being praised after puking your guts out, though.
“Thank you for watching over her,” your mother smiles. “I’m very grateful. I should’ve settled the bill faster. I tried to smooth things over, but now that I think of it, I should have chased after [Name] right away. Something could have happened to her if you hadn’t shown up. Some criminal could have attacked her.”
“That’s why I’m here, my lady. To patrol the area and ensure everyone’s safety. I’ve been doing the rounds so that no unsavory characters turn up.”
In a rich area like this, constantly frequented by nobles, it’s no surprise they have knights posted nearby. But your mother’s right. You could have run into some drunk, reckless asshole so late at night. You’re lucky it was Carmine who found you.
“Thanks for staying with me, Carmine,” you smile. “Sorry. It was probably a little gross. This may be a lot to ask, but could you try wiping tonight’s memory from your mind? I’d really appreciate it.”
“I wouldn’t think such crude things. I’m sorry that you weren’t feeling well, but I got to enjoy a lovely evening chat. I find myself feeling quite fortunate that our paths crossed again.”
“Oh?” your mother blinks. “Do you two already know each other?”
Balls. It probably wouldn’t be good for your poor mother’s heart if she finds out you were nearly stabbed by a thief thanks to your own recklessness. Both of your parents are so damn protective, it’d be a miracle if they ever let you leave the house ever again.
You desperately try to signal Carmine with your eyes, but it turns out that you don’t actually need to, because he knows better than to run his mouth.
“I was patrolling through town one day, nothing out of the ordinary,” he says. “Lady [Name] was out with one of her maids, I believe, and she dropped something she was carrying, so I picked it up and handed it to her. We only met very briefly, but I recognized her straight away. She certainly leaves a lasting impression.”
“That she does,” your mother proudly beams. “She’s the center of attention, wherever she goes.”
Usually not in a good way, though.
“In any case, thank you again for helping, Sir… Carmine, was it?”
“Yes, my lady,” he nods. “And I said, it was no trouble at all. I enjoyed speaking to Lady [Name]. It was a nice change of pace from my usual tasks.”
You can finally go home now, and even though you’re feeling a lot better, you’d rather not hang back at the scene of your crime any longer than necessary. You wonder if more rumors will start, given that you ran out of the restaurant looking green in the face. This will surely be a hot piece of gossip among the nobility. And also the restaurant staff.
Your mother loops her arm around yours to help steady you while you walk, and Carmine accompanies the both of you to hail a carriage. He holds your hand and helps you up the stairs. It’s not just the amount of food you ate, but all the drinks you had too. The alcohol’s starting to hit you pretty hard. You seriously need to lie down when you get home.
You start swinging your legs out, giggling stupidly. “Whoo! I feel so much better now. I’m nice and floaty. Like I’m on a cloud. Or the back of a Samoyed.”
“Oh, darling, you’re drunk,” your mother sighs, shaking her head disappointedly. “Well, at least we’ll be home soon. Just hold out a bit longer, and then I’ll have the servants draw you a nice, soothing bath.”
Carmine arches a brow. “Forgive my ignorance, but what is a Samoyed?”
“I’m not sure, to be honest. Sometimes she just likes to say things.”
“Farewell, Carmine!” you salute, getting hotter and dizzier by the second. “Thank you again for keeping me company. And for not judging me for puking. And for calling me pretty. I especially liked that part.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” he chuckles.
Your mother sighs again. “Excuse her. She’s a bit tipsy, as you can see. It’s been a long evening. She just needs to rest. Have a good night, Sir Carmine. I assure you your kindness won’t be forgotten.”
Carmine bows his head once more before shutting the carriage door and signaling for the carriage driver to take off. You excitedly wave him off through the window, but hardly five seconds later, you're seized by an overwhelming fatigue, and your head slumps against your seat.
Soon enough, you're out like a light.
Carmine watches the carriage leave, and all the while, he can't seem to keep a smile off his face.
You're a strange one, admittedly. He's only had two encounters with you so far, but both of them will probably play on his mind for some time to come.
He wonders, with amusement, what the third encounter will be like.

This is how you are introduced to Curtis Everett, the guy in charge of the “Garbage Men”.
A/N: Reader is plus sized, femme. No other descriptors used.

Part 1 -- Part 3
Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
It's only been a few days but you find yourself unable to follow the advice of the medical staff and get some rest. Your brain won't let you. You've got budgets to consider, a resume to update, and follow up appointments to schedule. Thankfully when Jake and Jefferson had brought the girls for a visit they made sure to bring your laptop.
Because you hated not knowing, you opted to spend your time researching to see about how much you might be getting from that back-pay promised by Curtis. Jefferson had assured you that Curtis did, in fact, have that kind of pull but "please don't dig too much into it." You got the impression not everything was on the up-and-up but you have bills to pay so you agreed.
On day four you got a notice of deposit from your bank. You took a look and your jaw dropped. That couldn't be right! You'd done the research. There's no way even an experienced, highly qualified tutor would ever be earning that much! There must've been a mistake! You immediately make a note to tell someone who knows Curtis.
Tumblr media
Curtis and Mace were going through their weekly itineraries. Between the two of them nothing got lost. Mace would, occasionally, grumble about needing a vacation but the two of them were the only people who keep all the moving pieces in mind.
"At least we can check a few things off the list this week," Curtis grunted. "Hal's got the bugs planted in the Smith law building. Jake's confirmed they're working."
"Fowler confirmed McMann won't be a problem," Mace reported. "Apparently the guy's busy trying to hunt down the guy that ran away with his wife."
Curtis chuckled at that. "That was Nat, right?"
Mace smiled, "yeah. Nat called "dibs" and we didn't have a counterargument."
"McMann's gonna spend a long time searching," Curtis shakes his head. "Nat's the best at not being found when she doesn't want to be."
"And the Missus is definitely better off," Mace agreed. "Nat's setting her up for life."
"That reminds me," Curtis interjected. "How's the back-pay for Hero doing?"
Mace double checked a few things on his phone before replying, "it's been deposited into her account."
"Good. One more thing we can cross off the list."
"Not yet, actually," Mace hesitated. Curtis gave him a curious look. "Turns out, she's trying to get ahold of you to talk about the amount. Beck says she's adamant that it's too much."
"Huh," Curtis's eyebrows raised. "There's something you don't hear every day. I'll talk to Barber and got some legal-ese that'll explain without explaining."
Mace nods and the two continue their meeting, switching to ongoing tasks.
Tumblr media
"Excuse me?" It's been a few days since the money hit your account and you've finally gotten a visit from Curtis.
They kept you at the hospital longer because your stress levels made it "irresponsible" for Dr. Beck to discharge you, lest you have a heart attack as soon as you get outside. At this point you're certain Dr. Beck wants to get as much money from your stay as he can. Everyone who visits, however, says otherwise.
"Hazard pay," Curtis patiently repeated. "That's why there's so much more money than you expected."
"You can't expect me to believe that!" You are indignant. "That's not how hazard pay works. I've done my research Mr. um, Mr." you pause because you realize you don't know his last name. You feel the pang of embarrassment because you've been saying you've done your research but you don't know something as simple as a last name! You push past it and continue, "I've done my research, sir!"
You open up your laptop and bring up all of your documents of notes, focusing in on the bibliography. "I've got data from reputed tutoring websites, the Department of Labor, Glassdoor, even the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and none of them support the amount I was given."
Curtis finds himself smiling. He's been talked back to plenty of times, but never like this. "You're cute," he blurts out.
Thinking he's making fun of you, you look away from him and try not to show too much hurt. Curtis assures, "I'm not saying that to belittle you. You really have put a lot of work into this."
You shake your head, "it's besides the point, sir. You've grossly overpaid me. I know you've overpaid me. Yet you are refusing to acknowledge this."
"That's partly because I'm not sure why it's such a big deal to you," he calmly states.
"Because I don't want to cheat you!"
"Are you saying there's a price limit for saving my nieces?"
"I mean, technically there is. Could probably use some actuarial tables used in life insurance policies to find it out." Curtis gives you a hard glare but you persist, "I'm not saying that your nieces aren't priceless. I'm saying that I don't want to take what isn't mine. This is a lot of money and I don't want you going hungry or something because you feel you owe me when you don't. I only did what any decent person would do!"
"It's been my experience that decent people are rarities," Curtis stated. "As such they, and by extension you, should be treated well and given plenty."
"That's another part of the problem," you sighed. "I have not been told anything specific but I've seen and heard enough to suspect that this money might not be... legitimate."
Curtis's jaw tensed up. He'd have to have a word with the J's about being more careful. "I assure you," he nearly growled, "that the money you received was honestly earned by us and then you. All tax forms have been taken care of. All employment paperwork is settled."
You meet his gaze, undeterred by the intensity in his eyes. You see no signs of trickery. Nothing in those icy blue eyes indicating he was hiding the truth from you. You nod your acceptance and he relaxes a bit.
"Now," he says in a much lighter tone, "was there anything else?"
"Um, just one," you replied. "You said that I'm officially employed? That you might have more work for me? Who am I employed by and what other work should I be ready for?"
"The official name of my company is Everett Enterprises," he explained. "That's the company title on your W-2. As for the "other work" that was implied, it's simply a notice that I may have other employees in need of a tutor. I know Hal has been looking at getting his GED."
"So all you would need from me is more tutoring?"
Curtis can hear the tremor in your voice. You're a good person who doesn't want to get mixed up in anything illegal and he's happy to accommodate that. "Yes," he asserts. "Though that may involve helping some of my people learn how to cite their sources like you did."
That gets a half smile from you and Curtis considers the conversation done. "Now please follow the doctor's orders and rest up," he pleads. As he turns to leave he says, "make sure to get your beauty sleep."
Because he's facing away he doesn't see your face fall at the comment.

Note
greetings, viktor (is it okay if i adress you by your name?)
i hope you are doing well. it was my lifelong dream to study physics. i managed to get in a college to fulfill that dream but apparently getting into one was way easier than finishing it. i really love physics and i think understanding how universe works is fundamental for our development as humanity but as i start studying in college i found myself losing my passion and feeling under-qualified for this major. it saddens me deeply and i lost all my confidence. i feel lazy and less than my peers.
sorry for the rant, you must be busy but as a fellow scientist (a successful and hard-working one i should add) i think you might have some advice for me. i really want to keep going but i can't seem to study because it never feels enough. have you ever felt like this? how do you keep yourself motivated and be a more disciplined person? thanks in advance and sorry again for bothering you.
anon.
(I apologize for not replying as our beloved Viktor, but as a former physics major, I very much empathize with your message. I worked very hard and eventually felt that the pace at which I needed to learn was one I could not maintain with my physical and neurological disabilities. I did well in an accelerated private high school, but a post-graduation brain infection and other difficulties made the return to college in my thirties a rough adjustment. I have switched to my other passion, writing, for my degree. I too felt a great deal of depression as I struggled with an incredibly difficult subject, especially as I did all in my power to succeed. My husband fully believes I could have continued, but I now know I made the best choice for me. In my spare time, I teach myself math and read my physics books, without the stress of grades.
All this said, I truly believe all of us can learn whatever we wish with enough time, patience, and hard work. I highly recommend learning about how to learn; I found the information in "A Mind for Numbers" by Barbara Oakley especially encouraging and helpful. Invest in a tutor and take great care in crafting a distraction-free, but balanced study schedule. Ask the "dumb" questions that 75% of your peers are afraid to ask. Interleave different types of problems, and take breaks so your brain can alternate between diffused and focused thinking. Keep a picture of whatever goal you may have at your desk. Go to office hours.
And do not forget that learning and memorization take time. As a person accustomed to a 4.0, I had to accept that lower grades were the norm in my major. We see lone geniuses in the media and expect simplicity; real scientists struggle together. But, back to Viktor...)
Yes, Viktor is fine. Thank you for asking.
Failure is data, is it not? Perhaps you may find this surprising, but I struggled academically when I began at Piltover. While I had raw intelligence, I found many holes in my previous, primarily self-administered education as I proceeded through the Academy. Tutors and extra practice helped me to catch up. Analyze your data with fellow students, and help one another succeed.
Be kind to yourself; the universe is ineffably complex, and you are but one person. But, never, ever sell yourself short. The mind has great plasticity.
Good luck, my friend.

The Rise of Home Tutors in Noida: Personalized Learning for Academic Success
Tumblr media
In Noida’s competitive academic landscape, where students juggle rigorous school curricula, extracurricular activities, and exam pressures, home tutors have become a game-changer. Unlike traditional classroom settings, home tuition offers one-on-one attention, tailored teaching methods, and flexible scheduling—making it the preferred choice for parents and students alike .
Why Choose Home Tutors in Noida?
Home tutors provide a customized learning experience, adapting to a student’s pace, strengths, and weaknesses. Whether it’s mastering complex math concepts, improving language skills, or preparing for board exams like CBSE or ICSE, tutors design lessons that target individual needs . For instance, visual learners benefit from diagrams and interactive tools, while others may need step-by-step problem-solving techniques .
Another advantage is convenience. With hectic schedules, commuting to coaching centers can be time-consuming. Home tuition eliminates travel stress, allowing students to learn in a comfortable, familiar environment—free from distractions and peer pressure. Parents also appreciate the ability to monitor progress closely and communicate directly with tutors about their child’s development.
Finding the Right Tutor
Noida boasts a pool of highly qualified tutors, but selecting the right one requires careful consideration. Reputable platforms like Perfect Tutor and Find My Tuition vet tutors based on qualifications, teaching experience, and student reviews. Many offer free demo sessions, letting parents assess compatibility before committing.
From primary school foundations to competitive exam prep (JEE, NEET), Noida’s home tutors cover all subjects—Math, Science, Languages, and more. Their impact goes beyond grades; they build confidence, critical thinking, and effective study habits that last a lifetime .
The Future of Home Tutoring
With the integration of online tools (live classes, digital resources), home tuition in Noida is evolving. Platforms like Vedantu and BYJU’S blend personalized attention with tech-driven learning, making education accessible and engaging .
For parents seeking academic excellence and holistic growth for their children, home tutors in Noida offer the perfect solution—quality education, tailored to fit.

If you have a disability (including things like ADHD and anxiety), talk to the office that deals with disabilities (often called the ADA office or ADA transition office), and see what accommodations are available to you BEFORE CLASSES START. This might be things like getting extra time on tests, or taking tests in a distraction-free space, having someone take notes for you if you're hard of hearing or have auditory processing issues, or getting a waiver on formatting errors in your paper if you use speech-to-text software. Your instructor won't be able to make exceptions for you such as giving extra time on a test unless they have an official accommodation request from the ADA office ahead of time, so it's important to get that squared away as early in the semester as possible.
If you are a first-generation college student (i.e. your parents/grandparents never went to college), are lower income, or are disabled, see if your college has a TRIO program. TRIO is a federal program which helps disadvantaged students succeed in college, and you will get extra, individualized support from the TRIO advisor at your school if you qualify for their assistance.
Make use of your school's tutoring center. Even if you think you don't need it, go anyway-- you don't know what you don't know, and tutors can help you improve your work in ways you might not have thought of.
If your college offers time management workshops, I highly recommend going to one. Knowing how to use your time efficiently will make your life much easier in the long run.
These videos on study skills have a lot of information that I wish I'd known when I was in college
Most importantly, ASK FOR HELP when you're struggling. Talk to your instructor, your advisor, or a tutor, and let them know what's going on. You're a lot more likely to succeed if you make use of the resources that are available.
Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend!  Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class.  Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE!  It’ll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule.  Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades.  Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook.  Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online.  Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts).  Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them.  It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates.  They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study.  And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted.  Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!!  Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed.  Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time.  Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something.  Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated.  Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up.  This WILL happen.  You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!

Is an Online Quran Tutor the Right Choice for Your Child in the UK?
As digital education becomes more common in the UK, many Muslim families are turning to online Quran tutors to provide their children with structured and accessible religious education. But is this modern approach the right fit for your child? Let’s explore the benefits, key considerations, and how to make an informed decision.
What Does an Online Quran Tutor Offer?
An online Quran tutor delivers live, virtual lessons through video conferencing platforms. These sessions focus on Quran recitation (Tajweed), memorisation (Hifz), and sometimes include Islamic studies. Lessons are typically one-on-one or in small groups, tailored to the child’s learning level, speed, and goals.
Unlike traditional madrasa settings, this method allows children to learn the Quran from the comfort and safety of home—an increasingly attractive option for families with busy schedules or limited access to local Islamic education.
Why Online Quran Tutoring Works
1. Flexibility and Convenience: Online Quran classes can be scheduled around school, homework, or extracurriculars. No commuting means more time and less stress for both parents and kids—especially in rural parts of the UK.
2. Access to Qualified Tutors: Parents aren’t limited by geography. Your child can learn from highly qualified Quran tutors across the world, including native Arabic speakers with deep knowledge in Tajweed and Quranic interpretation.
3. Personalised Learning: Each child learns differently. An online Quran tutor adapts the pace and content—whether your child is mastering basic Arabic letters or working on memorising longer surahs. This personalisation boosts confidence and retention.
4. Comfort of Home: Learning in a familiar environment can help children, especially shy or younger ones, engage better. One-on-one attention removes distractions often found in group classrooms.
What Parents Should Consider
Child’s Learning Style: Does your child enjoy digital interaction? Can they stay focused online? Younger kids may need supervision, while older children often thrive with independence.
Tutor’s Credentials: Don’t settle for less—research tutors thoroughly. Look for reviews, qualifications in Quranic education, and trial classes to gauge compatibility.
Technology Requirements: A stable internet connection, a quiet room, and a device like a tablet or laptop are essential. Technical hiccups can hinder the learning experience.
Affordability & Commitment: Pricing varies. Some tutors offer affordable packages, while others charge per session. Make sure it aligns with your budget and expectations for weekly commitments.
Supporting Your Child’s Quran Learning Journey
Even with a skilled online tutor, parental involvement remains crucial. Set up a distraction-free learning zone, encourage daily revision, and celebrate small milestones. Stay connected with the tutor to track progress and address challenges early on.
Final Thought
An online Quran tutor can be an excellent fit for many UK families—combining the flexibility of modern learning with the spiritual depth of Quranic education. By choosing the right tutor and staying involved, parents can ensure their child gains not just Quranic knowledge but a lifelong love for learning.
