No, No, NO! High AMH is definitely NOT diagnostic for PCOS. This is a classic case of correlation... AMH IS often high in PCOS, but that does not mean PCOS is the only reason for high AMH. In fact similar to how women with hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) can often have a large number of antral (resting) follicles, high AMH can also be associated with HA. I discussed some recent research on this topic in a blog post not too long ago - http://noperiod.info/HAvsPCOS2. ⚕️It is *really* important that you look at the whole picture when making the determination between HA and PCOS. This means looking at: 👉FSH 👉LH 👉Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) 👉AMH 👉free Testosterone 👉Androstenedione 👉DHEAS 👉17-OH-progesterone 👉prolactin 👩‍🎓Those hormones will cover the four main conditions that cause secondary amenorrhea (meaning you had your period at one time but do not any more). ⛔With HA, FSH may be low (<=7), LH may be low (often <=3, sometimes <=7), SHBG is often high, AMH is often high, all others will be low to normal. ⛔With PCOS, FSH will be normal (around 7), LH will be normal to high (often 2-3xFSH), SHBG is low, AMH is high, androgens will likely be high, 17-OH-progesterone and prolactin will be normal. ⛔With congenital adrenal hyperplasia, 17-OH-progesterone will be high, androgens will also be high. ⛔With a pituitary microadenoma, prolactin will probably be high, FSH and LH will be low. 📖For more info, you can download the HA vs PCOS chapter of my book for free at http://noperiod.info/HAvsPCOS. ❓Let me know if you have any questions!!
