In the days it takes you to heal from your injuries, Luffy comes to your bedroom to sleep next to you every night. He does try, the night after the first, to sleep in his own bedroom but he can't. Usually sleep comes easy to him, especially after a long day of adventure but not now. He closes his eyes, trying to think of your wounds healing, your soft breathing, your warm hand holding his, but he can't fall asleep. He huffs in irritation and rises from his bed, sulking across the ship to knock on your bedroom door and opening it slowly. You put down your book, you were also struggling to sleep, and open the covers for him. You smile at each other as he excitedly hops into your bed.

And so it becomes routine for you two. Even as your injuries heal completely, as the sunsets and the crew walks off to their separate bedrooms, Luffy follows you into yours and you let him. It becomes normal to roll over in the middle of the night and snuggle into his warm body, to wake up in the morning with his arm wrapped around you, to feel him pull you closer in his sleep, to giggle at his sleep-talking, to hear your name in his mumblings. You offer to let him keep his toothbrush and some clothes in your room, he accepts.

Sleeping together becomes so routine that you have trouble sleeping without him. There were times when you two would be separated by a foe that Luffy challenged and each night you would stay awake staring at his side of the bed, worry clouding your mind and making it impossible to sleep and eventually when Luffy defeated the foe, he would be covered in bandages and it was your turn to listen to his soft, even breathing as he slept. There were times when you be working late into the night and he would come find you, curling up on the floor next to you to sleep in your presence until you eventually finish and drag him back to your bed so you can both sleep comfortably. There were times when you would get angry at him for putting the crew in danger with his recklessness and you'd slammed your bedroom door in his face and toss and turn, your anger at him turning into desperation for him to just come to bed already, eventually you get up to find him and as you open your bedroom door, Luffy's sleeping frame falls on your legs. He'd been sleeping against your door. Smiling you pull his rubbery body into bed and cuddle up next to him, his heartbeat your lullaby. He smiles in his sleep and his arms come up around you. Whenever he's missing his hat or sandals, you find them by your bed.

This new routine of you and your captain sleeping together left your other crewmates with their mouths on the floor several times. They still hadn't gotten used to you two waving goodnight and walking into the same bedroom. When they would ask, you tried to explain but there really wasn't anything to explain. You and their captain couldn't sleep unless you slept together. That's all, why do they always stare at you in such surprise when you say that? Their shocked faces didn't discourage you both into cuddling up to each other at night, finding relaxation, warmth, safety, and comfort in each others arms. What was once your space becomes "our bedroom", "our closet", "our bathroom".

Okay I know I keep harping on this, but honestly it's the little details like costume and character design that tend to bother me more in adaptations than Big Changes (the latter feel like they're at least being done with intention so even if I don't like the choice that was made I at least can credit them for trying something even if it was dumb; the former to me tend to just come off as shortsighted or lazy or careless).

So now that I've seen (and enjoyed!) the last episode...

I just. can we take a minute and imagine how this would have gone if Celebrimbor had first walked onto screen like an elegant Elf Lord, in fine robes and jewels with his long hair done up in some intricate fashion, glittering and poised and full of confidence and grace...

Contrast that with Halbrand, bloodied and barefoot human, one of the short-lived Secondborn, a vanquished king of a fallen people. Two characters so far apart they might as well have the Sundering Seas between them.

Then Halbrand comes back dirt-stained and drenched in the rain, a miserable powerless creature, and Celebrimbor comes out to meet him as the lofty Lord of Eregion; then slowly show the shift, as Celebrimbor's pride starts to whisper to him and Annatar steps out of the light in his robes, lovely but pale and simple, a creature of the Valar, ready to kindle all the hopes the Celebrimbor thought long lost...

Of course Celebrimbor grows less elegant and coiffed as he gets more and more involved in his project, swapping the fine robes out for a smith's apron and the elegant grace for passionate excitement; and Annatar becomes a little more polished, and little more put-together, until along the way he ends up in the same type of apron, the same gear, and for a moment there in the smithy they match: creators, equals, partners, friends.

(For a moment, it all seems like it could go well.)

Then it starts moving the other direction.

Celebrimbor grows increasingly disheveled as Annatar begins adopting more and more finery. Then the time-loop, Celebrimbor falling apart, soot-streaked and manic; and Annatar swanning around Eregion like an elvish lord of the Elder Days, vibrantly colored and glittering with embellishment. The way Celebrimbor was when we first saw him. No wonder everyone in Eregion looks at Celebrimbor and believes so readily that his mind is slipping! no wonder they turn to Annatar instead, so polished and put-together and confident, and place all their doomed hopes instead in him...!

Then the end, with Celebrimbor maimed and bloody, robes blackened with ashes, lying in a dying heap of destruction; and Annatar standing over him still looking perfect, not a hair out of place...a visual reversal of where they started, one rising to his greatest heights (but doomed to fall, staring up at the elf he's destroyed) the other crumbling and broken in filth and agony (but seizing that last bitter victory, staring down from the banner-pole at Sauron and seeing the doom that will find him someday)...!

The journey, the contrast, the mirroring: the parallels moving in opposite directions, meeting on the way and ending in ruin—!

(And they did this, yes, a bit...but because they started off with Celebrimbor dressed in those simple slouchy robes with messy Hobbit-curl hair, there just isn't as much of a linear visual journey for him to take, so it doesn't come across as noticeably as it could; and it doesn't hit with the intensity that it ought to in the end.)

(And it could have! It could have!)

(And it drives me nuts it didn't.)

stoic illiterate unwilling assassin deeply in love with unfailingly kind rich sad gay man almost stabs his crush's brother because the brother cares so much and so genuinely for the gay man that he searched assassin's room out of worry and found knives and a mysterious letter before being interrupted by the assassin who then does not want to show him the letter which seems incredibly suspicious, only for a later scene (after the gay man interrupts them and thus stops any escalation from happening) to quietly reveal that the very sus letter in possession of this illiterate assassin is not in fact a sign he's lying about being illiterate.... it's just two pages of him practicing the gay man's name over and over in neatly spaced lines...... a reveal which he was going to STAB a man over because he doesn't know that the gay man's brother knows the man is gay and loves him with his whole heart and would never ever do anything to hurt him........ i will never get over this, how could i ever get over this, everything else ever is going to be downhill from here

I've come to the conclusion that loving young royals doesn't mean I can't be critical about it, maybe especially bc I love the show so much I have such strong feelings about it, good and bad and I can love parts of canon and agree with it and appreciate it but I don't have to love it all. I have accepted that it's okay if I don't accept the ending and I don't have to force myself to support it. It's okay to not agree with all of canon and it's okay to not side with all of the creators' intentions/views. Loving a show doesn't mean you have to take everything the writers say on face value and that's the only version that is allowed to exist. Canon isn't everything and fandom is about curating your own experience that makes you happy and not miserable. You don't have to dismiss canon in every aspect and ignore it entirely, that's certainly not what I want but there is a fine line between being canon respectful, allowing some parts to exist and sometimes, yes, you just have to say "fuck canon" and move on for your own sanity and wellbeing
