Chapter 51: Statement of Walter Sims, regarding a list. Recorded direct from subject, twenty-sixth of January, 1990.
[CLICK]
GERTRUDE
You’re certain you don’t mind?
WALTER
Not at all. Honestly, when you said you would come to me rather than have me come to you, I assumed this wasn’t going to be…official.
GERTRUDE
Yes, well.
People don’t often send messages ahead of time. They simply…come to give their statements. I admit I was intrigued.
WALTER
I’m here most of the hours the Institute is open. Simple as that.
GERTRUDE
Still. I have a…feeling, shall we say, that your statement doesn’t need to be available for research.
WALTER
I don’t think you’re wrong about that.
Are you ready?
GERTRUDE
One moment.
Statement of Walter Sims, regarding—how would you term it?
WALTER
Let’s just say “a list.”
GERTRUDE
Recorded direct from subject, twenty-sixth of January, 1990.
Whenever you’re ready.
WALTER (Statement)
I’ve worked here for almost three years now—ever since we found out we were going to be parents. My mother made it clear that she was not going to make herself responsible for what she termed “my careless mistakes,” and Sarah’s only family is a sister over in America with a family of her own. My choices were to drop out of school and get a job or let us both starve. Put like that, it’s no choice at all, really.
I’d thought to go to sea. My best mate and I always talked about it, and he had a job on a commercial deep-sea fishing vessel, so I asked him about getting a job. He talked me out of it, though. The captain’s a bit…odd, he says. He knew his father-in-law was looking for a handyman and suggested I apply. The old man and I suited each other well enough, and he hired me on the spot.
The work isn’t hard. I’m a general man about the place. I do repairs, painting, gardening, a bit of housework. He buys the groceries, but I put them away. Sometimes I do a bit of cooking for him. He’s not infirm or an invalid—well, obviously—but he can’t climb ladders or do a lot of bending over, so anything regarding hard labor, I handle for him. (heh) My biggest job these days is keeping next door’s grandson from getting at the entire cherry crop in the summer. They hang pretty near the property line, and the lad’s learned to climb pretty well these last couple years.
It’s nice for a lot of reasons, probably the biggest of which is that I can bring my boy with me sometimes. Sarah’s trying to finish her degree, at least part time, so on days she has classes, I bring him to work. He adores the old man—it’s the closest he’s got to a grandfather—and my best mate’s boy is only a bit older than him, so they play together. Can’t separate them with a pry bar. They’re good lads, both of them.
Neither one was here the first day I saw it.
It was just after the first of the year. The couple next door must have had some sort of party; there were paper streamers and fragments of fireworks all over this side of the fence. I was picking up all the bits when I saw a figure standing by the house.
He wore a suit, a three-piece suit. All of it was black as night, except for his tie, which was pure white—or so I thought at the time. His hands and face were white as snow, too. No, more than that. He was colorless. Completely devoid of any color. He was staring up at the house. When I got a little closer, I realized he was staring up at the old man’s bedroom window. He had a clipboard in one hand—black, like his suit—and a pen in the other. It was the only splash of real color about him, and it was gold, very pale gold. Like a shaft of light.
I saw him write something down on the clipboard. I called out to him, just like I did when you came up—told him this was private property. There’s a place down the road with an orchard open to the public, and the numbers are reversed, so sometimes we get people coming here by mistake. It’s not usually a big deal.
But this one…he looked at me. He didn’t have any eyebrows, or, well, they were so pale they didn’t show up, but I thought he looked…surprised. Like he hadn’t expected anyone to be there. I asked him again if I could help him, but he just—he vanished. It was like he’d never been there at all.
It gave me a bit of a turn, I won’t deny it, but for the most part, I shrugged it off. Either I was having a hallucination, or he’d just moved very quickly. I wouldn’t ever have thought of it again, except that a couple of days later, I saw him again.
He was in the same place, just underneath one of the cherry trees. Matter of fact, I’d seen the branches rattling and thought it was next door’s grandson again, climbing up. (soft laugh) Obviously there aren’t any cherries this time of year; the trees are bare as bones. But we’d had something of a freeze the night before, and the branches were slick with ice. I was worried he might slip and hurt himself, so I went over to get him down. But when I got closer, I saw the same man again.
This time, he was looking away from the house, towards the Stokers’ place. He was peering very intently over there, not moving except to make a note on his clipboard. I called out to him again, a little louder and a little less friendly this time, wanting to know what he was doing and where he came from.
He vanished again, but this time, just after he disappeared, the old man came out onto the porch here and wanted to know what was going on. I told him about the strange visitor, and the fact that he just kept…leaving so quickly.
To my surprise, the old man got pretty agitated. He wasn’t mad at me—wasn’t even mad, really. Just…agitated. He told me not to have anything to do with the man if he turned up again. I asked if he knew him, and he said no, not exactly, but that he’d been around enough to know something related to one of the Fourteen when he heard it.
We’ve talked, of course. I knew what he meant. He obviously couldn’t say which one it was, not without seeing it for himself, but he told me to keep away from him, not make eye contact, and hope he didn’t turn his attention to me. I asked if I should come talk to someone from your Institute, and he said no again. Said it was such a small thing, not worth bothering about. Nothing for you all to really sink your teeth into. And he said he didn’t want you lot touching me, either.
So I left it alone. Kept my head down and got back to work. Until yesterday.
Both the boys were here. I let them “help” me a bit, but, well, they’re two. Eventually I told them to go play on the porch while I cleaned out the gutters. I don’t want them running about under the ladders when I’m up high. It’s a good way for someone to get hurt.
I was just coming down when I saw him again. Standing behind the skeletal remains of the privet hedge, facing the house again. Facing the porch. He was watching the boys, just as intently as he’d looked at all the others, but this time he was watching the boys.
I didn’t call out to him this time. I jumped off the ladder and went for him. When I got close enough, I shouted, “Hey!” Just to get his attention, you know, before I grabbed him.
Well…it worked, insofar as it got his attention. He looked even more surprised than the first two times. This time, I was close enough to see the barely-there shape of his eyebrows, the thin lines of his mouth, the way light just slid off his suit, still solid black except for the tie. This time, though, I was close enough to see it wasn’t pure white. There were faint lines and whorls in it—like a feather from a gigantic wing. But when I grabbed at him, he vanished again.
This time, though…he dropped his clipboard.
I picked it up and studied it. I half expected it to be some oddity as well, like black paper written on in gold ink, but…no, it was perfectly ordinary stock, good quality paper, and it was neatly written in a deep black ink. The handwriting was clear as daylight, as were the contents of the note.
It was a list of names. Seven of them. With yours truly right at the top.
GERTRUDE
Do you still have the list?
WALTER
No. I was almost done reading it when it…disintegrated in my hand, I guess.
But I have it memorized. It burned itself into my mind. Not just the names, but each one had a pair of dates after it, separated by a single dash. Like a range.
GERTRUDE
Seven names, you say? And what were the dates?
WALTER
If you mean “what do they mean”…I’m not sure, but I have a guess. I know what the first date means, anyway, and I have my suspicions about the second. But the list itself…
GERTRUDE
Let’s record it. For posterity.
WALTER
(deep breath) Walter Sims, fourth July 1976 to seventh April 1990.
Alastair Koskiewicz, twenty-sixth January 1935 to eighteenth March 1997.
Daniel Stoker, first May 1990 to fourteenth August 2013.
Gertrude Robinson, seventeenth December 1934 to fifteenth May 2015.
[GERTRUDE INHALES SHARPLY]
WALTER
Timothy Stoker, thirteenth January 1985 to—and that’s when it started to dissolve.
It was like a drop of black ink on the page, obscuring the second half of the date, and then it just…spread. It absorbed the bottom three names and dates first. Then it burned all the way through the paper, and the clipboard, and just kept spreading until…until it was just dust in the wind.
I talked to Kier—my best mate—when he turned up to get his son, while the old man was helping them (slight laugh) conspire to let them spend the night. Gave him the whole rundown. I think it would have stopped there, except that while I was telling him, I suddenly remembered that, right before the paper started dissolving, when it was still just the ink blot—for just a moment, where the dates at the bottom would have been, it coalesced into a drawing of an eye.
And I swear it blinked.
That’s when we sent the note round. I’m sorry to make you come all the way out here. I’d have been perfectly willing to come to you if you’d been willing to work with me.
GERTRUDE
I don’t know that this would keep.
Did you see any of the dates on the last two?
WALTER
No. Didn’t need to, really. Saw the names, which means I know the first dates, and—oh, hang on.
[FAINT SINGING CAN BE HEARD IN THE BACKGROUND, INDISTINCT AT FIRST BUT GRADUALLY LOUDER UNTIL THE WORDS TO “FISH OF THE SEA” CAN BE MADE OUT]
[A SUDDEN PATTER OF RUNNING FOOTSTEPS]
YOUNG JON
Papa!
WALTER
Hey, there’s my boy.
[RUSTLE OF FABRIC]
All right there, Kier?
KEEPER
All right there, Walt.
Ma’am.
WALTER
This is Gertrude Robinson. The Archivist at the Magnus Institute. Ms. Robinson, this is Kieran Blackwood, my best mate, and this is my boy.
Go on, say hello.
YOUNG JON
Hello! I’m Jonny. I’m two and one-quarter.
GERTRUDE
A pleasure to meet you both. And who is this?
KEEPER
(gently) It’s all right, Wickie. Tell her your name.
YOUNG MARTIN
(mumbled) Martin.
YOUNG JON
He’s my very best friend in the whole wide world. And that’s a very wide place. Uncle Kier told me that, and he’s almost the smartest man there is, so he should know.
[WALTER AND THE KEEPER BOTH LAUGH]
GERTRUDE
Yes, well…that’s wonderful.
WALTER
Tell you what. Ms. Robinson’s never seen how fast you can run. Why don’t you two race to see who can be the first one to run all the way around the house and get back?
YOUNG JON
We can do that! Come on, Martin!
YOUNG MARTIN
Ready, steady, go!
[POUNDING FOOTSTEPS AND CHILDISH GIGGLING RECEDE INTO THE BACKGROUND]
GERTRUDE
Hmm. How long do you estimate this will take?
KEEPER
As long as we need. They’ll probably race around to the far side of the house, slow down, and sing a few rousing choruses of the song I taught them a couple months ago.
It’s the one that goes, “La la la, la la la la la, the grown-ups are talking.”
WALTER
They’re two, not stupid.
GERTRUDE
…Right.
KEEPER
You’ve told her, then?
WALTER
Aye. We just finished up.
KEEPER
Terminus?
GERTRUDE
…How do you know about the Fourteen?
WALTER
…Ma’am, you do know I work for Alastair Koskiewicz, right?
GERTRUDE
Yes, I…oh.
Oh, I see.
He told you?
WALTER
In bits and bobs. Enough to avoid them, anyway. Or at least I think that was his intention. Doesn’t always work.
KEEPER
Obviously.
GERTRUDE
Of course.
(sigh) Yes. I believe you’re correct. The person you saw was likely an agent of Terminus.
WALTER
Thought as much.
Well. Suppose I’d best let the old man know. Seventh of April, that’s…what, three weeks before you leave on your next run?
KEEPER
More or less. Depends on the tides, really.
WALTER
Well, I should be able to get supplies ordered in, at least, but that’s a bit early to have the garden laid out. He’ll need to get someone else for that.
GERTRUDE
I must say, you’re taking this remarkably well.
WALTER
What do you expect me to do? Start crying? Curl up in a ball in a dark room and mourn?
At least I know. And I’m not ill or anything—not that I know of, anyway—so it’s going to be an accident. It’ll be sudden. Which means that, if I hadn’t seen this list, it would catch us all off-guard. Now I’ve got time to put things in order. I can make arrangements to make sure Sarah and Jonny will be taken care of. I can get whatever work around here needs to be done finished, or at least started.
There’s always more work to do, I suppose. Always one more job. But at least I won’t have to worry that I didn’t do all I could.
KEEPER
He says, as though he had ever, in his life, put forth less than one hundred percent effort into anything he did.
[WALTER LAUGHS]
WALTER
That’s as may be. But still.
I’m sorry I won’t get to see my boy grow up. I can’t imagine what he and Martin will be like when they’re our age, or when they’re thirty, or when they’re old men.
You, I can easily imagine as an old man. Some grizzled old lighthouse keeper with a weatherbeaten face and snow-white hair, staring out over the storm-tossed ocean and longing…
KEEPER
Blackwoods don’t go white. We go silver.
You know I’ll look out for them for you, right?
WALTER
I thought that went without saying. But…thank you.
[SOUNDS OF CAR TIRES ON GRAVEL DRIVE]
KEEPER
Incoming.
WALTER
(sigh) Damn. Hoped we could get you out of here before he got back.
[CAR DOOR SHUTS]
[FOOTSTEPS, PUNCTUATED BY THE REGULAR THUNK OF A CANE]
ALASTAIR
Trudy.
GERTRUDE
Alastair.
ALASTAIR
And what brings you out to the haunts of coot and hearn?
WALTER
She came to get my statement about the man I saw.
ALASTAIR
(gruffly) Told you to have nothing to do with him. Or the Institute. You want them to mark you?
WALTER
I think it’s a bit late for that. He showed up yesterday and was watching the boys, and—well, he dropped his clipboard. List of names and dates.
ALASTAIR
(more gently) How long have you got?
WALTER
Ten weeks, give or take. Enough time to finish the painting. Patch the roof over the dormer. I might even be able to get that shed built for you. I can definitely get the ground prepped, but I think you’ll need to get someone else to do the planting this year.
ALASTAIR
How can you think of that at a time like this, what?
WALTER
Like I told Ms. Robinson here, what else am I supposed to do? Spend the rest of my life mourning that I won’t have more time? That just wastes the time I do have.
ALASTAIR
You’re facing down the End—
WALTER
I’m facing death.
GERTRUDE
It is the same thing.
WALTER
I can see how they’d get lumped together, but they’re really not. Death is only the end if you assume the story is about you.
[A BRIEF SILENCE]
[RUNNING FOOTSTEPS]
WALTER
(audibly grinning) Look out, here comes trouble.
YOUNG MARTIN
Granddad! Granddad!
ALASTAIR
All right, come here, you rips. What have you been up to?
YOUNG JON
We were just racing around the house and then we saw a skylark, honest we did, and Martin told me the poem about it, and—
YOUNG MARTIN
And then it flew away and, and we heard your car and came to see you, and here you are!
YOUNG JON
(whispering loudly) Papa, is Mr. K’s surprise ready?
WALTER
(matching his volume) Just about.
ALASTAIR
(also whispering loudly) I’m not deaf, laddie buck.
WALTER
Why don’t you two go wash your hands and set the table for tea? I trust you to be careful.
YOUNG MARTIN/YOUNG JON
Yes, sir!
[RUNNING FEET, A SCREEN DOOR BANGING SHUT]
GERTRUDE
Well. I won’t take up any more of your time. I suppose I’d best be getting back to the Institute.
ALASTAIR
Oh, hang the Institute, Trudy. Surely your assistants can spare you for the afternoon. I’m sure Mendelson won’t mind, what?
GERTRUDE
Mendelson retired more than fifteen years ago. James Wright is the current head of the Institute.
ALASTAIR
Wright? That little dog’s todger?
GERTRUDE
He does well. It surprised me, too.
I—I shouldn’t.
KEEPER
You’re not even a little curious to see what those two little nippers have conjured up as a surprise for Alastair’s birthday?
GERTRUDE
Speaking of those two, I am curious why Jonny calls you “Mr. K”.
ALASTAIR
“Koskiewicz” is a bit of a mouthful for a two-year-old.
WALTER/KEEPER
(simultaneously and accurately mimicking Jon’s tones) Two and a quarter.
GERTRUDE
So why don’t they both call you “Granddad?”
WALTER
We used to refer to him that way for both, but once Jonny started talking, he decided that if Martin can’t call my mother “Grandmother,” he wasn’t going to steal Martin’s grandfather. He wanted Martin to have someone of his very own.
ALASTAIR
Gertrude, he’s Lily’s boy.
GERTRUDE
(softly) My God.
WALTER
I did tell you Kier got me a job with his father-in-law. Did you just not make the connection?
GERTRUDE
No, I—I didn’t.
How is Lily these days?
[ALASTAIR MAKES A NOISE BETWEEN A SPUTTER AND A GROWL]
KEEPER
Lily’s…fine, ma’am.
ALASTAIR
Should’ve stayed at the Institute and left her to be raised by wolves. Would’ve solved a lot of problems.
KEEPER
Aye, but then we wouldn’t have our Wickie. And I wouldn’t trade him for a king’s ransom.
ALASTAIR
Hmm, yes, yes. Thank God he takes after his father, what?
GERTRUDE
…I take it she hasn’t improved with maturity, then.
ALASTAIR
Let’s just say there’s a reason Martin spends most of his days here when Kieran’s away for work.
[DOOR CREAKS OPEN]
YOUNG MARTIN
U-um, ‘scuse me. Are—are you going to stay for tea, Ms. Robinson?
GERTRUDE
I really shouldn’t.
ALASTAIR
Come on, Trudy. Just an hour or two.
I have missed you, what?
Say you’ll join us.
YOUNG MARTIN
Please?
[A SHORT PAUSE]
GERTRUDE
Since you ask so politely…I’d be delighted.

GERTRUDE
Final notes.
I…I really don’t quite know what to say here. The statement itself is…fairly straightforward. Obviously those dates bear watching, but I suppose I can’t be certain of them. Of all the abilities I seem to have developed in the last twenty-five years, the ability to Know the future is not one of them.
Still, I suppose finding a way to warn the Stokers would not go amiss. Mr. Sims did give me a bit more to go on there.
I am not made of stone. I do feel very keenly for that young father and his…situation. He did finally get the chance to give me the last two names on the list, and I suppose it’s no surprise that they belonged to his son and his godson. (heh) They’re quite a pair, those two. I admit that I’m somewhat relieved the dates on their names were obscured before he could see them. No parent should have to know when their child is going to die.
And he has given me much to think about. I have a date. If his statement is accurate, I have a little over twenty-five years to accomplish all I need to accomplish. Of course, it’s entirely possible that those dates are the absolute limit, not the concrete end—that I will live no longer than that—but…well. That should give me time, if I work hard at it.
He’s right. There will always be more to do. (heh) Unless I fail, and it all ends. Perhaps that’s why the last three dates are—no. No, I have to believe that these rituals can be stopped, will be stopped. And now I have even more of a reason to work at them than before.
Honestly, I’m not sure what about this whole experience has shaken me more. Finding out the date of my own death…(voice hitches) or meeting my grandson.
I don’t think I’ll make a file in the Archives for this one.

[LONG, HEAVILY CHARGED SILENCE]
MELANIE
What. The. Fuck.
PAST ARCHIVIST
(softly) Oh, God.
SASHA
Gertrude Robinson was your grandmother?
PAST MARTIN
I—I didn’t know…
MARTIN
Neither did I. I don’t—
It kind of explains a lot.
ARCHIVIST
Like what?
MARTIN
Like why she avoided me? Like why errands to the Archives were the only ones Diana never sent me on?
PAST MARTIN
A-and it’s—when, when Elias—when Jonah made me experience her death. I-it was—you said it wasn’t usually that intense.
Was that why? I could f-feel her thoughts and emotions because we’re not just connected by the Eye, we’re—related.
ARCHIVIST
I—
[STATIC BEGINS, SOFTLY AT FIRST BUT GRADUALLY BUILDING]
Yes.
No one ever knew. No one apart from Alastair Koskiewicz, and Liliana herself, ever knew that Gertrude gave birth shortly before being appointed Archivist. The baby was placed with Alastair’s parents, for a while anyway, but they were quite elderly and died within a few months of each other four years later, at which time Alastair resigned his position in Research to raise her. Gertrude always made absolutely sure that nobody knew about Liliana. The one and only time she ever tried to reach out to her, Liliana made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with the woman who had given her life and nothing else, as far as she was concerned.
Gertrude didn’t know about you until that day, but afterward, you became the single driving force behind her war against the Fears. She worried that the appearance of the eye on the list might mean that the Ceaseless Watcher had taken an interest in you, and she became ruthless in her zeal to keep it away from you. She spoke with you only twice after that day, taking care to be in disguise and using a false name, just in case.
When she found out you had joined the Institute, she was devastated and terrified in equal measures. It was only when Elias Bouchard did not come down to the Archives to casually mention that he had hired Alastair Koskiewicz’s grandson that she realized her steps to protect you had been, in some small way, successful, and Jonah Magnus had no idea of the connection between her and you. Still, she redoubled her efforts, becoming ever more ruthless in her determination to stop the rituals, to make the world—
MARTIN
J-Jon. Jon!
[STATIC ABRUPTLY STOPS]
ARCHIVIST
Wh—(realizes) Oh, God. Martin, I’m sorry, I—
MARTIN
It’s okay. It’s okay. Just—settle down, okay?
ARCHIVIST
Okay.
Okay, I—
(sighs) Are you three all right?
MELANIE
Do you all need a minute?
PAST MARTIN
Yeah. Thanks, Melanie.
MELANIE
Sure.

(softly) They moved.
Grandmother and Grandfather, they—just before Danny was born. They’d always lived on this little farm, but they abruptly decided they wanted something smaller and moved to a flat not far from where we were living at the time. We moved a few months later. I never knew why, but…
PAST ARCHIVIST
Y-you think it was because Gertrude…found them. Tried to, to warn them. About Danny, about you.
PAST MARTIN
Oh, Tim.
[FABRIC RUSTLES, SOME MINOR SCRAPING SOUNDS; IT’S PRETTY OBVIOUS THERE’S A GROUP HUG GOING ON]
TIM
It’s okay. It’s okay.
It’s going to be okay.
PAST MARTIN
Sure.
PAST ARCHIVIST
We can get through this.
Together.
PAST MARTIN
I like the sound of that.
Jon, I—I’m sorry your dad didn’t get to see the man you’ve become. I think he’d be proud of you.
TIM
Sounds like your grandfather would have been proud of you both.
PAST MARTIN
He’d have been proud of you, too. I-if he’d had the chance to—I think you would have liked him.
I know he would have liked you.
TIM
…Thanks, Martin.
[A COUPLE OF HEAVY SIGHS]
PAST MARTIN
So—so now what? We go…up to Hainault, find the storage unit, figure out what it is—what’s up there?
PAST ARCHIVIST
No.
No, not—not now. I-I need the weekend. I’ve…it’s been one thing after another for so long. I’ve been going non-stop. It’s not time-sensitive, not really, and…I’m tired.
Let’s just…not think about it for a couple of days. Let’s close down the Archives early and, I don’t know, go meet Charlie when he gets home from school and take him out for ice cream. Something like that. Let me have a couple of days to enjoy being home and with you again and—a-and we can worry about it on Monday.
We won’t talk about it. We won’t think about it. We’ll just…take a break. I think we all deserve it.
PAST MARTIN
…Okay. Okay, that—that sounds good.
Tim?
TIM
(deep sigh) Sure. Sounds great.
PAST ARCHIVIST
All right then. Let’s go.

7 Tips on How to Grow Strong & Healthy Seedlings
Tumblr media
Successful cultivation of healthy seedlings requires correct agricultural techniques. If the work is carried out qualitatively and meets the requirements of sowing technology and care, then seedling raising is not a difficult process, and the planting material is planted in an absolutely healthy and permanent place. However, there are cases when healthy, friendly seedlings begin to wilt, and after 1-3 days, the seedlings die completely. The cause may be non-infectious plant damage related to violation of agronomic requirements of cultivation conditions (insufficient light, low temperature, high humidity, over-fertilization, etc.), so that weak seedlings affected by soil infection in the form of fungal and bacterial diseases blackleg, rot and other forms. This article is devoted to how to avoid seedling diseases caused by cultivation errors and how to overcome blackleg and other infections.
SIMPLE RULES FOR RAISING HEALTHY SEEDLINGS Most of the agrotechnical measures are preventive, but if these simple measures are not followed, it won't be easy to raise healthy seedlings.
1. Sterilize seedling soil mixtures Disinfection of soil and soil mixture should be carried out as a mandatory agronomic measure when raising seedlings in containers, pots, boxes, and other vessels. If you do not have time to sterilize the soil mixture in advance, you can do so before planting using one of the recommended methods or your own original method. Pour the prepared soil into boiling water and dissolve manganese (1-2% solution) in the water. Stir and dry the spilled soil for 2-3 days. Repeat the procedure after 3 days with a solution of soda water. Dissolve 100 g of baking soda per 2.5 Gal (10 liters) of water. At each reception, the soil is dried and agitated. 2 weeks before sowing, treat the soil mixture with a biological agent according to the recommendations: Universal Organic Biofungicide. The soil can be treated with a Bordeaux mixture (1% solution) or copper sulfate (0.5% solution) before sowing. The concentration of the solution should be low so as not to burn the young roots during germination. After all disinfection procedures, dry the soil mixture, fill the container with warm water heated to 75°F (24°C), and sow the seeds in moist soil.
Be found. Seedlings grown in peat pots and plastic boxes were virtually free of blackleg disease.
2. Maintaining a neutral soil environment Acidic soil conditions are favorable for the development of soil fungal infections. Therefore, it is necessary to test the acidity of the soil (with litmus paper) before sowing. The best is considered to be pH = 6.0-6.5. Lime, dolomite powder, and wood ash are used to neutralize the soil. A neutral environment is very important for seedlings. As soil acidity increases, some nutrients become unavailable to the plants. Some gardeners treat the soil under seedlings with dry ash and add sand to maintain a neutral response of the soil while drying it out with excess moisture.
3. Maintaining the density of seedlings and sprouts In large greenhouses, it is necessary to sow seeds at the recommended rate and not to overestimate the density of plants. Seedlings that are too dense can be broken up by pulling out weaker plants: do not pull out, but pull out weaker shoots at the soil level. Thickened seedlings create their own moist microclimate and provoke the growth of disease-causing fungi. When cutting seedlings, leave a distance of 0.6-0.8inch (1.5-2 cm) between seedlings, which will ensure good ventilation and sufficient light for each seedling. When sowing seedlings into individual containers, it is best to sow 2 seeds per plant, and after germination, pull out the weak plants (you can also pull them up).
4. Observe the air and soil temperature regime As a rule, crops grown through seedlings are heat-loving. Therefore, the necessary levels of air and soil temperatures need to be strictly maintained. Seed germination begins with air temperatures within 60-64°F (16-18°C), but the most aggressive sprouts emerge when air temperatures rise to 77-86°F (25-30°C), depending on the culture. Immediately after mass germination, the air temperature must drop to 60-64°F (16-18°C) so that seedlings do not elongate. In this mode, seedlings rapidly form root systems. Therefore, the optimum regime for seedlings of most vegetable crops is 68-77°F (20-25°C) during the day and 60-64°F (16-18°C) at night. Soil temperature is no less important for seedlings. Too much cold, as well as too much heat, can lead to the suppression of seedlings. The optimum condition is 64-71°F (18-22°C). It is especially important to maintain this soil temperature regime during the harvesting process. A drop in temperature below 60 °F (16 °C) will result in deterioration of nutrient and water reception by the plant and reduced energy for seedling roots.
5. Irrigation regime and air humidity observations The soil under the seedlings should be kept moderately moist. Sprouts should be watered in the morning with water heated to 68°F (20°C) no more than 1-2 times per week, but better after the soil surface has dried. Water the seedlings along the edges of the container when growing at home or along the furrow in the greenhouse. Water the seedlings during the first 6-10 days so that the water does not get on the plants. Frequent and heavy watering can deteriorate the air regime of the soil and the activity of the root system. In addition, high humidity of soil and air promotes the rapid development of fungal diseases, and seedlings may die. Therefore, after watering, strongly moistened soil should be dried with dry sand (which is better) or watered through trays instead. You can use finely ground topsoil peat or dry humus to cover the watered soil. The optimum humidity level in the room should be kept at 70-75%. Ventilate the room to reduce humidity, but do not air it out.
6. Without extra light, you cannot get quality seedlings If the conditions at home allow it and you do not need many seedlings, then place the container on a windowsill where the daylight shines. Sometimes, however, additional lighting is needed regardless of the number of seedlings planted, especially when sowing seeds in January-February. For seedlings, a minimum of 12-14 hours of light per day is recommended, but in early spring and winter, plants receive up to 50% of the required light. At low light intensities, plants will shrivel, elongate and bend toward the light source. Therefore, lights are installed in family rooms and greenhouses to provide seedlings with the necessary level and intensity of light, but not with hot lights, but special - cold light. Usually, the heavy light nursery is carried out from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Many gardeners use daylight from plant lights or fluorescent lamps. Now, most greenhouse gardeners are switching to LED lights. They emit a red and blue spectrum that improves seedling development, give off little heat, and are very energy efficient.
7. Don't over-fertilize seedlings Buy ready-made soil mixes for home seedlings that do not require additional fertilizers, especially nitrogen. If the soil mixture is self-cooking, the plants will have to be fertilized. Although with a properly prepared soil mixture, you can do without fertilizer, especially since crops, seedlings have a very short germination period (27-35 days). Normally growing plants have green leaves and strong stems that do not need nutrients. Excessive nitrogen nutrition is very painful for young seedlings. It causes the elongation of plants and their accommodation. Stems become thin and light, internodes elongate, and leaves - a painful dark green shade. The general weakening of the plants helps to accelerate the infection of the crop. To avoid over-fertilization, it is not necessary to fertilize seedlings before harvesting. Within 7-15 days after picking, foliar application of "nitro phosphate and potassium-based high-efficiency complex fertilizer," ash infusion, and the addition of growth promoters and others. If the nitrogen content of seedlings is too high, you can spend a lot of water and immediately drain the trays of water and cover the soil with dry sand in layers not exceeding 0.8inch (2 cm). Small sawdust or grain bran, or finely chopped straw can be placed on the soil surface. Soil microorganisms will begin to break down the fiber and use the excess nitrogen in the soil for this purpose. To improve the nutrient balance during this period, you can spray the plants with Solgar (Chelated Iron).
Tumblr media
MEASURES TO CONTROL SEEDLING DISEASES Agrochemical measures are the quickest and most reliable way to protect seedlings from diseases. Among these diseases, fungal and bacterial infections are the most pernicious ones. Particularly dangerous for young seedlings is blackleg. The degree of damage from this disease is very high - up to epizootic. Within 2-3 days, the plant roots are affected by the growing fungus, and the seedlings die. That is why it is so important to observe all agrotechnical requirements of seedlings.
1. What contributes to the development of black legs on seedlings? Despite all preparations for planting seedlings, some typical soil fungal spores, called sclerotia, remain alive and dormant. They accumulate on soil, plant residues, seeds, and wooden greenhouse props. The accumulated infection, under the right conditions, begins to multiply vigorously. The fungus proliferates in the soil. Plants are infected at the roots, and the infection manifests itself as wilting and lodging of seedlings. The spots of individual diseased plants merge into one continuous field within a short period of time. If seedlings are not treated immediately, they will die completely. In order to protect the plants adequately, agricultural techniques and agrochemical works should be carried out simultaneously.
2. Distinctive features of blackleg disease If all agrotechnical requirements are complied with, but seedlings are lodged in separate, rapidly increasing centers, this means that the seedlings or already young ones are already sick. In the case of black stem disease, the stem turns black at the roots, and a black cross can be clearly seen. The disease is caused by several types of soil fungi: some fungi affect the seedlings during the first days of their development. Diseased seedlings during this period turn black, harden, and rot in the areas where the fungus sprouts inside the plant (roots, root neck, lower part of the seedling). Other categories of fungi affect mature seedlings ready for planting. It manifests itself as thinning and darkening (to black) of the root neck and drying of the lesioned part. The plants do not die, but planted in the ground for a long time, they become sick and formless healthy products (especially crops with affected cabbage heads).
3. What should I do if my seedlings get the blackleg disease? The first days of germination are usually not watered to avoid provoking lodging. If the development of the disease cannot be prevented, the diseased plant should be removed and burned. The part of the soil where the diseased plant is located should also be removed, and the area should be treated with an ash soak. Usually, such a solution is prepared in advance so that no valuable time is lost. Dissolve 2 cups of wood ash in 0.25-0.5 Gal (1-2 liters) of boiling water. Influence for 6-7 hours. Filter and dilute in 2.3-2.5 Gal (9-10 liters) of warm water. Spray plants and soil with this solution, approximately 0.25 Gal/11 sq. ft. At home, you will need to arrange the tray with the seedlings in one place before spraying. After 5-7 days after 100% germination, treat with a fine dispersion spray with a solution of humic acid, which can significantly improve the plant's immunity while having a negative effect on pests. The solution is prepared at the rate of 1 capful per 2.5 Gal (10 l) of warm water. Other immune preparations can also be used. Today, experts offer a huge list of chemical and biochemical agents that help protect seedlings from various diseases, including blackleg disease. With independently cultured seedlings, the use of biological agents is much safer for the family's health. They effectively kill soil fungi and fungal diseases on plants and are absolutely harmless to humans and pets. Biological fungicides prepared according to the instructions can be systematically sprayed on plants and soil during the entire period of seedling cultivation, which will fully protect them not only from blackleg but also from rots, powdery mildew, phylloxera, pearl fungus, and other diseases. According to the recommendations for spraying and application to the soil - Trichodermin, etc.
An effective way to combat blackleg is loosening and starting the soil. Loosening of the crust will increase the access of oxygen to the roots and eliminate the process of decay. Within 2-3 days of mass germination, gently soak and water the sprouts using troughs and trenches. Seedlings should be kept dry during this period. Before picking the plants, as a precaution, treat the soil mixture with colloidal sulfur at a rate of 5 grams per 11 square feet. Kemira fertilizer can be added to the soil mixture in very small doses and mixed thoroughly. The available form and availability of micronutrients in the fertilizer will help the plants adapt to their new environment more quickly after harvesting. Some gardeners add preparations of "fungal biological preparations for the prevention and treatment of plants" to the soil mixture and mix it well before picking the seedlings to prevent blackleg disease. Plants treated with this soil treatment do not actually get the blackleg disease. Copper-containing preparations inhibit not only fungal but also viral infections. Therefore, it is recommended to apply them to protect mature seedlings from blackleg disease before planting in permanent locations. Before planting, the above-mentioned preparations are introduced into the well as a solution of phytosporin, Trichodermin. If not prepared, then each hole was watered with a 1% solution of manganese the day before transplanting, before planting the seedlings. Thus, observing all the requirements of agricultural engineering for seedling cultivation, it is possible to obtain healthy planting material. Would you please share tips and proven methods for healthy seedlings in the comments of this article?

Smaller anxiety rods may be used with adorable putting planters to preserve less weight vegetation. Succulent plants are the pleasant to add while the usage of rods. Dressing table
USE PLANT HANGERS.
Whether or not placing indoor houseplants or making a few outdoor additions to the flower garden, (Wardrobes)selecting how and where to hang pots could make a big visual effect. However, the use of hangers restricts one to only the mild-weight flowers. Hangers include hooks and ropes. Baskets, light pots and innovative DIY vessels can be effortlessly hung. First priority on hanging the flora should be analyzing their wishes. You need to bear in mind where to place the flora as maximum of them require sunlight and moisture. Second vital element is considering the adulthood size of the plant. Potted vegetation can emerge as too heavy for the hanger to assist their weight making them to fall. Metallic plant hangers are advisable as they're robust. Indoor striking baskets have to be softly weaved and that they ought to complement the indoors décor. Going for the DIY hangers will showcase your creativity however it is right to word that they're great for outside decoration.
Start AN INDOOR KITCHEN garden.
Having an indoor kitchen will hand you dual advantages. Your kitchen will appearance lively and on the equal time you'll revel in a sparkling deliver of fresh herbs. Growing herbs interior is quite easy, you simply must ensure you get commenced the right way. Only go for herbs that are clean to hold. Chives, parsley, rosemary, oregano, cilantro and chilli peppers are examples of clean-to-grow indoor plants. You could grow the herbs in pots or different suitable vessels. The Types Of Reflective Stickers And Their Uses
Tumblr media
Reflective stickers are made light-reflective materials that are great for use in poor lighting conditions. They’re rarely used for advertising. However, they are ideal for signage and messages that need to be visible when hit with a beam of light. They’re also, generally, made with strong adhesives and therefore, commonly used for outdoor use. The graphics/designs used on reflective stickers do not actually glow and look similar to ordinary stickers during the daylight. Their qualities only show when hitting with light during dark conditions.
Two Main Types of Reflection Techniques:
Diffused Reflection – Generally used on paper or cloth, and therefore, suitable for some industrial uses. This technique allows a beam of light to bounce off the material to give a soft reflection.
Retro-Reflection – Is the most popular reflection technique in use. It involves using very small beads of aluminum-coated glass in a vaporized form to reflect light. They are then attached to plastic and made into signs. This technique allows the reflective stickers to appear to be lit up when hit by light.
Some Popular Uses:
Vehicles and Trailers – This is, perhaps, the most popular use of reflective stickers. While most vehicles have reflectors in one form or another, reflective stickers can be used for added visibility. This is especially important for vehicles parked in obscure places or in high traffic areas.
Bikes, Motorcycles, and Helmets – Reflective stickers provide added safety measures for bikes and motorcycles. Furthermore, helmets, including construction helmets, can be fixed with reflective tapes and stickers to increase visibility in the dark while also providing safety in accidents.
Tumblr media
Sewn to Fabrics – They can be used on fabric-based materials such as life jackets or school bags to make the wearers and carriers more visible during emergencies. However, reflective fabrics are a better option for this than the stickers.
Driveways and Letterboxes – They can help guide the car into and away from dimly lit driveways at night. They can be used on fences and letterboxes for better visibility.
Boats and Ships – Reflective stickers or tapes on the various parts of sea vessels can be the difference between safety and tragedy. They can be used on different sides of the vessel or on protruding edges.
Doorways and Low Hanging Objects – They can be used as a warning above low height doorways to prevent injuries. Similarly, they can be used for low hanging pipes that can cause head injuries.
Factories – They can be used for safety instructions and warnings in factories.
Warehouse Floors – They can be used along the flooring to mark safety areas or provide directions in emergency situations.
Safety Cones – They can be added to the, already, vibrant colors to guide traffic and prevent accidents.
Advertising – Though very rarely used for this purpose, reflective stickers printing can be used for low-light advertising. This is, especially, used for brands advertising their safety products such as bike helmets or even, sticker makers advertising their reflective stickers.
Some Things to Consider:
They require flat surfaces for placement. Stickers that are not neatly placed may not serve their primary purposes – safety and visibility.
They require strong adhesives as they are commonly exposed to different weather and pressure conditions.

kat! love your all your fics you're an amazing writer! can you share some writing tips for amateur writers out here?
hi anon writing advice tag if youre looking for like...more specific answers? when it comes to writing, its a very subjective experience when it comes to finding inspiration, outline style, word choice, etc but theres a few things i think across the board are important to remember.
going under a cut to not clog dashes
- consume as much media as you can. ex: books, music, film etc. i know for me personally im most inspired when im consuming art. i literally cannot write without music, like its genuinely so difficult because i pace my writing against the soundtrack of each scene. and the filtering, editing, and direction style of films/tv series i like will influence, in some manner, how the fic looks in my mind. yes, your plot and characters are found/uncovered in your brain and heart, but these other mediums assist in your interpretation of how youd like to express it and will help inspire the way you describe certain things. so dont be afraid to step back from a doc to consume other forms of art. for me, at least, its really important.
- keep writing and dont let yourself stop. once you decide you want to write a fic or drabble or whatever comes to mind, write it. and once that is done, write more. this is how you develop a style. you will notice the more you practice, the easier it gets. OR you will notice the more you write, the more evolved your writing becomes. this is how you form a style. here is an example:
an excerpt from a series i was writing in 2011 in a different fandom:
No one tells you what it’s like to go insane. No one talks about it because, we, as a society, understand the chemistry and the biology of it, but we don’t understand the feeling of it. Time had started to compress, slipping around me in a computerized metronome of blood flow and heart beats that had started to tell me nothing except that I was still living. They hadn’t strapped me to the bed, but I still couldn’t leave and everything about the room started to feel like a cage. Sleep had eluded me since I was pulled out, and through the exhaustion and the haze of sameness I never knew exactly when I was beyond a date of 2266.
I was craving daylight - not the vitamin D, as I was being given a healthy dose of daily vitamins through an IV drip - the natural light and the natural warmth of it, all over my face and skin. The ceiling lights of the room provided an element of ultraviolet light, but after so many hours the falsehood of an invention began to wear a person down. It’s something you never really think about, the sun, not until you don’t have it, not until you haven’t seen it for one hundred years.
But when one hundred years feels like three days or two weeks, time really stops mattering and then the sun itself doesn’t feel so important.
from Empty Vessels, posted july 2019:
For a while, they do not speak. Minseok looks longingly out over the water, hollowed, as the herbalist regards the dirt on her shoes with an empty stare. In the silence, Junmyeon minutely nods, the bare threads of his patience allowing them space to find their words. Images spring to his mind, all imagined and none wholly formed, each as bleak and battered as the crow in Chanyeol’s arms. He wonders what Minseok has seen, unable to avoid with a clarity bordering on entrapment; he wonders what she has heard, whispers on the wind of a life he thought he’d left behind.
‘The trees are screaming,’ she announces, eyes still downcast though her voice is sharp; blunt as the edge of a sword and equally as unforgiving. ‘They’re in pain.’
It settles over him, slow and uncompromising, the notion that trees could make sound - that they would choose to. The oldest wisdom lingers in their branches, and for one brief moment, he sees her as someone as old as their roots.
i, at least, can see an enormous difference in quality and style and thats because ive been writing and writing and writing for a very long time lmao. in 2011 i was 3 years into writing fanfic consistently; at that time, too, i was still working towards my degrees and writing daily for film analysis projects. the more you write, the more you evolve so please please please dont stop just because you feel you arent experienced enough. confidence and style will come over time, just keep yourself in practice.
- NOTES MEAN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. notes on tumblr are a hot take - and while, yes, there is a need for more reblogs and more sharing of content, focusing on statistics will drive you to the brink. joseph gordon levitt released a ted talk last week on how seeking attention is detrimental to your creativity and LORD this is such a good talk because its true. one of the things he discusses is how powerful the feeling of receiving attention - in this case, notes on a fic - drives someone toward output, but is that genuine? now, of course theres always going to be different scenarios or opinions but if you are just starting out with writing please dont post a fic under the assumption or expectation of achieving a note goal. there are so many variables as to what gets notes and what does not - from algorithm to how many people are online to see it to timing to content like you cannot predict what will or will not correspond to x number of notes and x number of followers.
instead of setting note or follower goals, set word count goals. when i first started writing for kpop i was actually a pretty concise writer. if you look at the early chapters of hero and wyrm tamer, they all would peak around 4 or 5k words. achieving 10-15K on something seemed absolutely ridiculous and impossible to me - hell, 15K was 10K words under my masters thesis count! why would i want to write that much? but now? im shook if i finish a chapter or fic and the word count is just 4K. those word count goals are exciting for me.
nervous about word count goals? thats fine! set a goal to write a genre. always wanted to try high fantasy? dope! do it! want to write some sexy vampires? fuck yeah, everyone loves those! want to write a fic that helps you release some tension or trauma youve experienced? please do that, writing is therapy and has been scientifically proven to help.
set goals for making characters, world building, soundtracks, to learn photoshop to make a moodboard. set goals for all kinds of things but pls dont set goals for statistics because these are so variable and very often outside of your control they will very often suck any joy out of your creativity before its had the chance to start.
i hope these help!

KSP Weekly: Mapping with Magellan
Tumblr media
Welcome to KSP Weekly! Tomorrow, September 15th, it’ll have been 28 years since the Magellan spacecraft began its primary mission, so it is as good a time as any to talk about this cool Venusian orbiter. Aptly named after the sixteenth-century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, known for his exploration, mapping, and circumnavigation of the Earth, the spacecraft’s main goal was designed to make quality radar maps of at least 70 percent of Venus' surface, providing a clear look at the topography below the planet's thick, perpetual cloak of clouds.
Also referred to as the Venus Radar Mapper, the Magellan spacecraft was launched by NASA on May 4 1989 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, making it the first interplanetary mission to be launched from a shuttle. It was also the first one to use a solid-fuel motor called the Inertial Upper Stage booster to continue its journey as it was released from the shuttle’s cargo bay, and the first spacecraft to test aerobraking as a method for circularizing its orbit. Magellan was the fifth successful NASA mission to Venus, and it ended an eleven-year gap in U.S. interplanetary probe launches.
Tumblr media
The spacecraft carried a sophisticated imaging radar, called Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR),  which was used to make the most highly detailed map of Venus ever captured during its four years in orbit around Venus from 1990 to 1994. After concluding its radar mapping, Magellan also made global maps of Venus's gravity field.
Magellan mapped 98 percent of the planet’s surface with a resolution of 100 meters or better. The radar images showed that most of the surface was covered by volcanic materials, that there were few impact craters (suggesting that the surface is relatively young geologically), and that there was no evidence of plate tectonic activity or water erosion, although there was some evidence of wind erosion. Despite the high surface temperatures (475°C) and high atmospheric pressures (92 atmospheres), the complete lack of water makes erosion an extremely slow process. As a result, surface features can persist for hundreds of millions of years. The Magellan mission also determined the topography of the Venusian surface, measured the Venusian gravity field, and provided suggestive evidence that the planet’s interior differs in major ways from Earth’s interior.
On Oct. 12, 1994, the spacecraft made a dramatic plunge into the thick, hot Venusian atmosphere, and was crushed by the pressure of Venus's atmosphere. Magellan's signal was lost at 10:02 Universal Time (3:02 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time) that day. What a glorious end to such an amazing mission, don’t you think?
Tumblr media
Although Magellan was the agency's last dedicated Venus mission, we’re sure that the lessons learned from the spaceship's aerodynamic dive into the Venusian atmosphere will be applied to future planetary missions… even if conducted by little green creatures.
[Development news start here]
The progress on Update 1.5 is on track, and, naturally, this week wasn’t without its developments. The team is currently working on some cool features regarding one of our favorite Celestial Bodies: Asteroids! As you know, before the Making History Expansion, it was very hard to get an asteroid within the atmosphere of other Celestial Bodies, at least without mods or some sort of cheats. When Asteroids were originally introduced into the game, only space interactions were in mind, but that changed with the expansion as now players can easily spawn asteroids on collision routes with other Celestial Bodies. In light of this, we have been working on ensuring that asteroids behave properly whenever they enter the atmosphere of a Celestial Body, similar to a spacecraft. So far, we have added VFXs as they go through reentry heat and included explosion effects when they actually collide. Check this Gif to see the progress.
In other news, the endeavor of revamping parts continues! Each week we gather insightful feedback from the community as we show the new look of some of these parts, but we haven’t shown you everything just yet. This week we have some stuff to show off. For instance, there’s more to the revamping task of the MK1 Command Pod that we want you to look at. Let’s start with the new IVA, which has been done over from scratch. As you know the look of this Pod takes inspiration from the Project Mercury Pods, so it made perfect sense to draw inspiration from these command pods to model the new command panel. What do you think?

Additionally, the team also worked on creating a couple of additional texture variants for the MK1 Command Pod. This way you’ll be able to give your rockets the right look: Dark, White or a Gray & White pattern, it is up to you! Also noteworthy is the detail that our artists have added to the Pod’s texture.

The Probodobodyne OKTO command modules also were in the artistic agenda this week. The new look of these command modules was based on the ones used in the Mariner Program, and to achieve that our artists made completely new texture maps using diffuse, normal and specular maps. They also retouched the geometry and added a new shader to the module’s tops to make them shine and interact with light, just like they did with the HECS modules. On top of that, with resource optimization in mind, they put both textures into a single map. Moreover, the collision mesh was tweaked to better fit the shape of the probes. Check these gifs to see the new models in motion: OKTO and OKTO 2. Bear in mind that the config files of these parts were not modified in any significant way.

Gone are the days when fishing was an utter guesswork. The best fish finder GPS combos under $300 will show you that getting the most out of your fishing experience need not cost an arm and a leg. We are now in the Digital Age when anglers, seasoned or not, no longer have to rely on their instincts alone to reel in the best catch, fully taking advantage of the latest technology to make their fishing experience a lot more fun, productive, and of course, easier.
Are you running on a tight budget? Fret not. We have put together a brief buying guide and product reviews to what we believe are the best fish finder GPS combos under $300 to have ever existed in the market today.
Which is the best fishfinder GPS combo for your budget?
While it may not seem as if you need a lot of consideration when looking for fish finders, you do have to put some thought into them before purchasing one. The best fish finder GPS combos are those that bring a combination of, of course, a good price tag, and important aspects such as frequency, power, sonar technology and transducer, and GPS and navigational features.
Best Fish Finder GPS Combo for Professionals
Raymarine’s Dragonfly-4 Pro Sonar/GPS highly sophisticated features make it among the best fish finder GPS combo for professional anglers. If you’re a seasoned fisher, we bet you’ll appreciate the unit’s unique aspects, such as its cutting-edge performance, smartphone-pairing feature, conservative price point, compact size, among many others. Its optically-bonded screen offers exceptional readability and boasts anti-fogging and water-resistant features. This device also CHIRP DownVision, giving it a bit of an edge over various other similar fish finders that have down imaging in this price point.
Best Fish Finder GPS Combos for Beginners
Equipped with basic yet high-definition navigation functions and GPS antenna, Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP is one of the best fish finder GPS combos for beginners. While it only provides minimal detail, this device is built with basemaps, which show contours for over 3,000 inland bodies of water of up to 1,000 feet. Even though it’s a basic device, it is upgradable with various premium charts via its microSD card.
If you’re a novice angler, another product worthy of your attention is the Garmin Striker 4 Built-in. While the Striker series is known for its basic features, we find this unit stands out among its closest variants. Many users are happy with how they can read the display in direct sunlight without any trouble, with the brightness setting at 80%. While this device doesn’t offer any NMEA or Ethernet connectivity, it is IPX7-waterproof and features a QuickDraw Contour Software, which allows you to create and save up to 2 million acres of custom HD fishing maps.
Best Fish Finder GPS Combos for Small Boats
Given their compact size, almost all - if not, all of the products we have listed work well for small-boat fishing, but we have scrutinized each and every product according to their GPS, CHIRP sonar capabilities, and other special features, and concluded that these three are the best fish finder GPS combos for small boats on this list:
1. The Garmin Striker 4 Built-in GPS Fish Finder proves successful fishing need not require a wall-sized fish finder. Smaller in size but never in features, the Striker 4 is one of the best fish finder GPS combos for small boats. Sporting a rugged, sturdy design, it is a great option for those looking to get a device that’s built with advanced features in an amazingly affordable price tag.
2. The Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP is a cool compact fish finder that you can bring on a kayak or small boat. Its power and size make it one of the best fish finder GPS combos for kayaks and small boats without having to sacrifice on features. It boasts a fantastic combination of super-bright, LED-backlit grayscale display, and CHIRP sonar technology, helping you distinguish game fish from baits in order to catch more fish.
3. The Striker 4CV with the transducer is another outstanding palm-sized piece of technology from Garmin. It comes in a compact, portable build, which makes it one of the best fish finder GPS combos for small boats and kayaks. You’ll be surprised at how useful features you can find in such a small unit. It uses the highly-optimized GPS system that allows you to precisely track the locations. Also, its mapping works excellently with different kinds of fishing rods – such as spin cast reels, baitcasting reels, etc.
Reviews of Best Fish Finder GPS Combos Under $300
The quality of fish finders has now become night and day-different from what used to be only a few years ago. GPS and sonar technologies are advancing by the year and displays are now getting bigger and more durable than ever. We have rounded up some of the best fish finder GPS combos under $300, in terms of value, quality, and capabilities. Now, looking into the models that would work best for your needs is all up to you.
1. Raymarine E70294-US Dragonfly-4 Pro Sonar/GPS with US C-Map Essentials
Owing to its growing popularity and state-of-the-art, built-in Wi-Fi-capability that allows for pairing with your smartphone, the Dragonfly 4PRO is no doubt one of the best fish finder combos under 300. You’ll be surprised at how many useful features you can find in such a small device: optically-bonded LCD technology- display; C-MAP essential pack, and a wide-scale DownVision function, among many others. And since it’s a fish finder GPS combo, it comes with a Chartplotter with high-sensitivity GPS, offering a handful of handy navigational features.
PROS
Crisp, clear image
Innovative Wi-Fi capability
Single-connector cable for both power and transducer signals
Easy to use
C-Map Essentials
Upgrade possibilities
DownScan overlay, Bottom lock, A-Scope
CONS
Mounting bracket cost
Flimsy ball-and-socket mount
Design
Upon observing the Dragonfly 4PRO technical specs, we can conclude that this device definitely has a lot to offer. As mentioned, the display brings optically-bonded LCD technology, which gives it resemblance to a top-of-the-line smartphone screen. Apart from its anti-fogging and weather-resistant features, the Dragonfly 4PRO lets you do neat stuff like stream the sonar data to your mobile device, where you can rewind the content and take images for online sharing.
One thing worth mentioning is we found out that the included ball-and-socket mount is a bit on the flimsy side, but that could be because it needs to keep up with the overall light weight of the device. Nonetheless, it’s heavy duty and easy to install, adapt, and fix on any available space on your vessel. One special feature exclusive to the Raymarine brand is its cable, which comes with a single connector for transducer signals and power, getting into the head unit.
CHIRP Sonar and Transducer
Needless to say, the CHIRP sonar technology is among the most essential features of the Dragonfly 4PRO. This device is designed with CHIRP DownVision, which gives it a bit of an edge over various other similar fish finders that have down imaging in this price point. Since CHIRP modulates sonar pulses over a range of frequencies, it offers photo-like clarity of the bottom using the DownScan mode, and an excellent target separation for structures, fish, whatnot in both sonar modes.
While not an entirely powerful device, the Dragonfly 4PRO’s sonar technology makes it ideal for use at depths of up to 900 feet. This device is built for high-speed tracking, which means that you keep obtaining information of what’s underwater even at higher boat speeds. The best-quality images, however, are obtained at 2-5 mph.
This device allows you to use two applications simultaneously, using its split-screen mode. What this means is that you can opt to view both the conventional CHIRP and DownScan sonars, or the position of your vessel on the chartplotter and one of the sonar applications, all at once. Being able to see both sonar returns provides you with a much better view of the environment below the surface, which is highly beneficial for target interpretations. The DownVision sonar view helps you easily spot the fish targets, even if they hide among the vegetation.
GPS and Navigation
The Dragonfly 4PRO features a superb combination of high-precision GPS technology and revolutionary chartplotter feature. This device comes with the C-MAP Essentials pack, which covers all crucial chart objects and navigation aid, tidal info, C-Marina icons, and coastal data displaying all depth shading and contours, and spot soundings out up to 60 feet. Capable of storing up to 15 tracks and 3,000 waypoints, the Dragonfly 4PRO is built with a 72-channel internal GPS/GLONASS system.
2. Garmin Striker 4cv with transducer, 010-01806-00
Equipped with CHIRP and ClearVü sonar, the Striker 4cv shares striking similarities with the Striker 4 version. The Striker 4cv flaunts a compact design but enough screen space to view fish targets, the waypoint system, and even both CLearVü and 2D sonar all at the same time. While it does have its own limitations, its powerful performance and premium features make it one of the best fish finder GPS combos under $300.
This device brings a 320x480-pixel, HGVA-color display, with integrated LED backlight for excellent readability even on bright daylight. Although the device is IPX7-waterproof, it’s best that, when fishing in saltwater, you wipe the water droplets off, as salt may seep into the device and damage its connectors.
PROS
77/200 kHz, ClearVü and temperature-capable transducer included
CHIRP 2D and ClearVü sonar
Various sonar features such as A-Scope, Fish ID, flasher, Ultrascroll, etc.
High-sensitivity GPS
Can save up to 5,000 waypoints
Can show coordinates
Can calculate the speed of your boat
CONS
Doesn’t include a cover
Very basic features: no sonar recording/ rewind
No microSD card reader
No NMEA connectivity
Sonar and Transducer
The Striker 4cv has both 2D CHIRP and ClearVü sonar, the latter of which includes CHIRP and is similar to the older DownVü, only that it provides wider imaging. The device operates at 50/77/200 kHz for its 2D traditional sonar, and at 260/455/800 kHz for ClearVü. It is built with the CHIRP ClearVü transducer. This transducer has a built-in temperature sensor, and the device itself has a temperature log and graph functions, which can be helpful when, for instance, you’re looking to detect currents on the surface.
Circular Flasher mode
The Striker 4cv features a Circular Flasher mode, which supplies information on the targets captured by the sonar beams. The inner rings show depth, while the segments on the outer rings indicate the various strengths of the sonar returns. Such function is useful for ice and stationary fishing.
Auto Gain
The Auto Gain allows you to set up the unit to automatically filter noise, while the Ultrascroll function lets you scan at faster boat speeds, allowing the data to scroll faster. Take note, however, that when the Ultrascroll is turned on, images tend to lose their quality at speeds over 40-50 mph.
The Striker 4cv doesn’t have sonar recording and rewind features like the echoMAP CHIRP 43cv or 45cv models, for instance. It also doesn’t come with the QuickDraw Contours function, which is some of the reasons why this model is cheaper.
GPS and Navigation
This device uses high-precision GPS, which allows you to track accurate locations and check the trolling speed for certain baits and fish targets. Thus, using the Striker 4cv with trolling motors will be remarkably easier. The Striker 4cv’s waypoint map feature lets you mark and map your fishing spots, docks, brush piles, and stumps.
3. Garmin Striker 4 Built-in GPS Fish Finder
While fish finder gadgets have generally similar features and functionalities, Garmin is consistently revolutionizing to enhance the precision and ease of use of its products. The Striker 4 is one of the brand’s most affordable and highly-sought-after models, dubbed as one of the best fish finder GPS combos under $300 in many reviews across the cyber space since its release. As you read farther along, you will discover that you get more than what you pay for with this gadget - it sports a compact, straightforward design yet packed to the brim with useful features.
As we just mentioned, the Striker 4 comes in a compact design, built with a 480x320-pixel, 3.5-inch HVGA-color display. The device is backlight-enabled and allows you to view two panels or apps simultaneously.
PROS
Dual frequency capable
CHIRP 2D sonar
77/200 kHz CHIRP transducer, temperature capable, included
Various sonar features such as Fish Symbols, A-Scope, Ultrascroll, Flasher etc
High-sensitivity, high-speed GPS
Saves up to 5,000 waypoints
CONS
No available latitude and longitude information
No MicroSD card reader
No NMEA connectivity
Rugged and relatively sturdier compared to the echoMAP units, Striker 4 is IPX7-waterproof and can withstand immersions up to 3 feet in freshwater. The device incorporates a built-in, rechargeable battery (with charger, of course), built-in transducer cable management and suction cup transducer float and mount.
CHIRP Sonar and Transducer
The Garmin Striker 4 unit comes with the transducer, with a 4-pin connector. This transducer is 77/200 kHzcapable and uses two conical beams of 15° for 200 kHz, and respectively 45° for 77 kHz. The maximum depth that you’ll be able to scan with this unit is 1,600 feet (487 m) for freshwater and 750 feet (228 m) saltwater.
CHIRP sonar adds a good amount of power and clarity to the images this device provides. In other words, you will benefit from better-defined targets, clearer images, less clutter, and a better lock to the bottom. CHIRP also offers excellent target distinction. For instance, if a school of fish gathers really close together, on a traditional sonar unit, their sonar return will just appear like one, big target; whereas with CHIRP, you’ll get to distinguish the several smaller targets.
The unit’s 2D sonar features several other useful functions, such as Fish ID, A-Scope, Auto Gain, Flasher, Ultrascroll, Split-Zoom, to name some.
GPS and Navigation
As with the other models within the Striker series, the Striker 4 doesn’t have a chart plotter, hence, its GPS system will only use a blank sheet as support.
Nonetheless, this device does integrate a high-precision GPS module, which lets you mark waypoints and almost any point of interest that you would want to revisit. It can save up to 5,000 waypoints, showing several indicative icons that you can use. It doesn’t provide coordinate information though.
4. Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP 000-11823-001 Fishfinder/Chartplotter with 83/200 kHz Transom Mount Transducer
If you’re a novice angler who’s looking to get a decent, portable device without breaking your bank, the Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP fishfinder combo will impress you with its capabilities and ease of use. Its power and size make it one of the best fish finder GPS combos for kayaks and small boats without any sacrifice on features. While not a very popular feature among some users, its monochrome, LED-backlit display is no deal breaker. It actually provides exceptional readability in direct sunlight. Its chartplotter feature is a remarkable addition that makes this device multifunctional especially out in the open waters.
PROS
Powerful 2D CHIRP sonar
DownScan Imaging
Impressive chart compatibility
Comes with a deep-water HDI transducer (50/200 455/800 kHz)
Insight Genesis capable
Split-screen view up to 3 panels per view
Automatic noise filtering
Various functions included, such as Bottom Lock, Amplitude Scope, Fish ID, Flasher view, etc
CONS
Does not include the unit cover
Instruction manual lacks details
Design
IPX7-waterproof, the Mark-4 CHIRP unit is built with a monochrome, 16-level Grayscale, 480x272-pixel display, featuring 11 levels of the backlight, which significantly enhance the device’s readability in direct sunlight. While users may find the monochrome display a bit outdated, it’s actually purposed to protect the eyes and staining of the screen. Many users still find it very helpful especially when viewing under bright daylight.
In terms of connectivity, this unit features an NMEA 0183 port. It also has a high-capacity microSD card reader, for data storage and charts upgrades. The Mark-4 CHIRP includes a standard tilt-and-swivel mount and also requires a 12-volt battery for its power source.
The transducer covers four frequencies:
50/200 kHz for 2D CHIRP.
455/800 kHz for DownScan and integrates a Lowrance-skimmer temperature sensor.
The device itself is capable of three frequencies for 2D sonar: 50/83/200 kHz. But since the transducer only works with 50/200 kHz, you will only be able to use Low CHIRP and High CHIRP for 2D.
Albeit a small, monochrome gadget, with this deep-water transducer, the Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP device is capable of scanning depths up to 2,500 feet (762 m) in 2D via its Low CHIRP.
GPS and Navigation
Like the Garmin fish finder devices on this list, the Lowrance Mark-4 CHIRP comes with basic navigation functions. It integrates a 16-channel GPS module and is built with basemaps, which provide contours for over 3,000 inland bodies of water and coastal contours of up to 1,000 feet. It can store up to 100 routes and tracks and 3,000 waypoints. However, the level of detail it provides is very minimal.
Despite its simple features, it’s still installable with various superior charts using a MicroSD card. It’s compatible with a bunch of premium features such as Nautic Insight™ PRO and HD, Lake Insight™, HotMaps® Premium, Navionics+, and many more.
Our Verdict
Graced with lots of positive reviews all over the world wide web, the Garmin Striker 4 is hands down the best fish finder GPS combo under $300 on our list. Its portability is its main selling point, as it lets you take it on any fishing trip even when you’re scrimping on space on your vessel. While it has no smartphone-pairing feature, unlike the Raymarine Dragonfly-4, you can rarely find a better product that boasts an easy-to-use interface, sheer durability, and a host of highly-functional features for its ultra-modest price.

Floating Church East London
Jury Report
A barge rather than a building, this mobile community facility occupies and makes use of the city’s underused canal infrastructure. The concertina roof structure is kinetic, allowing it to lie flat so that the barge can pass under bridges when moving between destinations.
Inside, there is good head height for a canal vessel, providing for a range of functions from cinema to church. A central rooflight oculus creates a pleasant pool of light to the main function area, complemented by the transparent sides of the pop-up roof which let in additional daylight.
The joinery details are neutral and carefully considered to allow sufficient storage. Where there is decoration, it features Art Deco design motifs and patterning finished to a high quality.
The Art Deco theme is continued on the outside through the colour scheme and horizontal stripes. When illuminated from the inside at night, the pop-up roof glows like a beacon.
The scheme was conceived as a product rather than a traditional building and has successfully maximized all the space inside and around the boat. Its flexibility of uses ensures that it can fulfil its brief to be a vital community asset for the neighbourhoods along the London canal network.

Tumblr media
How To Stimulate Collagen Production In SkinYou regularly hear the term in care items or ads about skin creams.
Yet, do you know how it is and what it helps you? Peruse and view all that you need to think about collagen here.
Substance
Some speedy realities about collagen
What is collagen?
How does collagen respond?
The significance of collagen
Clinical Uses of Collagen
The body produces collagen itself. How does that function?
What causes us to lose collagen?
How would you be able to deal with limit collagen decrease?
How would you be able to deal with help collagen creation?
Medicines to invigorate collagen creation
Some quickfacts about collagen
Collagen is found all through the body, however particularly in the skin, bones and connective tissues.
A few kinds of collagen are significantly more grounded than steel.
From your 35 E you going to deliver less collagen.
Collagen creation diminishes because of smoking and openness to UV light.
Restorative moisturizers that case to build collagen levels are probably not going to do as such, as collagen particles are too enormous to ever be consumed by the skin.
With age, collagen debilitates, prompting wrinkles and ligament issues.
Staying away from tobacco and exorbitant sun openness and following a sound eating routine and exercise routine can help noticeably lessen maturing and ensure collagen, keeping skin, bones, muscles and joints solid for more.
1 What is collagen
Collagen is the most bountiful protein in our body (30% of all proteins are collagen).
You can consider it a glue or restricting specialist. It keeps our bodies together.
Without it, our bodies would essentially self-destruct. Collagen is found in our connective tissue, bones, teeth, eyes and ligaments.
There are in excess of 25 normal types of collagen in our body.
The more established we get, the less collagen our body produces. This makes the skin less close and wrinkled.
2 How does collagen  Respond?
Collagen gives the skin a stout, young, solid shine. In any case, it accomplishes more.
Collagen filaments are extremely amazing; they give the skin immovability.
How much the skin can be pulled out is dictated by the collagen strands.
Collagen strands have an exceptionally high rigidity. Our body in this way utilizes collagen filaments where elasticity is significant:
in the skin to make versatility,
in tendons and ligaments that hold our joints and bones together,
In ligament, for example, articular ligament, to guarantee strength of the design.
Additionally in bones, vessels, our teeth and organs, collagen is available in more prominent amounts and structures the construction.
In supporting the body tissue, the collagen cooperates with the elastin. Elastin strands are exceptionally flexible; they give the skin its flexibility.
Accordingly, the skin is tight (when we are youthful in any event) around our body.
blend of collagen and elastin is vital for some pieces of the body. The lungs, and bones, yet in addition the veins rely upon it.
3 The importance of collagen
Collagen shapes the essential construction of our skin. Diverse collagen strands associate with one another and give the skin solidness.
The collagen strands behave like a three-dimensional ‘interlace’ of elastic groups.
At a youthful age, this collagen design of the skin is extremely firm and adaptable.
Collagen isn’t just significant for the body yet in addition has therapeutic employments.
It is utilized in some superficial methodology and is likewise sold as a dietary enhancement to assist with joint portability.
It is even utilized for serious consumes . Here it is utilized to make human “skin substitutes”.
An absence of collagen can be extremely dangerous. There are even hereditary sicknesses related with collagen inadequacy.
For instance, osteogenesis imperfecta, otherwise called glassy illness, is the consequence of essentially diminished collagen levels.
It might likewise be because of the presence of collagen, which is of a lower quality than ordinary.
4 Clinical uses of collagen
Collagen is resorbable. This implies that it tends to be separated, changed over and retained into the body.
It can likewise be framed into packed solids or cross section like gels.
Its wide scope of capacities and the way that it happens normally makes it clinically flexible and reasonable for an assortment of clinical purposes.
Collagen for clinical use can emerge out of people, cows, pigs or sheep.
Fillers : Collagen infusions can work on the shapes of the skin and fill volume misfortune and wrinkles .
Fillers containing collagen can be utilized cosmetically to eliminate lines and wrinkles from the face.
can likewise further develop scars , as long as they don’t have a sharp edge.
Collagen can fill moderately shallow volumes. More broad openings are typically loaded up with substances like oil, silicone or inserts.
Wound Dressing: Collagen can assist with mending wounds by drawing in new skin cells to the injury site.
It invigorates mending and gives space to new tissue development.
Directed Tissue Growth: Collagen has been utilized in periodontal and embed treatment to advance the development of explicit kinds of cells.
Vascular Prostheses: Collagen tissue unites from contributors have been utilized in fringe nerve recovery, in vascular prostheses, and in blood vessel remaking.
Treating osteoarthritis: Collagen enhancements can assist with treating osteoarthritis.
5 The body produces collagen itself. How does that function?
Luckily, our skin is inexhaustible.
Shrewd Mother Nature has given us interconnected fix frameworks that work to keep the skin’s supporting designs fit as a fiddle:
the Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM). ECM parts are proteins that give the three-dimensional design to our skin.
ECM
Models are elastin strands, collagen filaments, elastin and fillers in the middle like fibrin and hyaluronic corrosive .
These are the most significant, yet in no way, shape or form the specific ones.
ECM parts, for example, collagen and elastin go through patterns of corruption and recharging.
This occurs similarly as your skin cells restore themselves consistently.
Taking into account that collagen makes up 3/4 of our skin, obviously it is significant that our bodies keep on creating collagen.
What’s more, in enormous amounts. The majority of the skin’s maintenance exercises occur in the dermis (the layer of skin under the epidermis).
What’s more, collagen creation is one of the most active “fix occupations.”
Fibroblasts make new collagen, while catalysts separate and eliminate old collagen.
Understand that decreased collagen creation is a characteristic sign of maturing.
To cure collagen consumption, the most ideal choice is to help collagen creation at the fibroblast level.
6 What causes us to lose collagen?
Because of the impact of daylight, age, substance impacts (eg oxidative pressure), the skin loses collagen and the collagen filaments become fragile.
As we age, our body creates less collagen. The immovability of the skin diminishes and the design changes.
Wrinkles structure, and articular ligament debilitates.
The change causes a sensational decrease in collagen creation. By age 60, a critical reduction in collagen creation is typical.
7 How can you Deal with limit collagen decline
A few variables can influence the degree of collagen in the body. Staying away from them can keep the skin sound for more.
To restrict collagen decrease, it is consequently best to:
No smoking: Many synthetics in tobacco smoke harm both collagen and elastin in the skin.
Nicotine additionally tightens veins in the external layers of the skin.
This damages skin wellbeing by decreasing the inventory of supplements and oxygen to the skin.
Breaking point sugar utilization: An eating routine high in sugar builds the pace of glycation.
This is a cycle where blood sugars join to proteins to frame new particles called progressed glycation finished results (AGEs).
AGEs harm close by proteins and can make collagen dry, fragile and frail.
Keep away from or shield from UV radiation: Ultraviolet beams in daylight cause collagen to separate quicker, harming collagen filaments and building strange elastin.
The UV beams in daylight harm the collagen in the dermis and the skin is developed erroneously and structures wrinkles.
Restrict or stay away from liquor .
What’s more, there are a few factors that adversely impact collagen creation, however tragically can’t be affected by us:
Immune system infections: Some immune system illnesses cause antibodies to collagen.
Hereditary changes can influence the extracellular lattice. The collagen created might be lower or it could be broken, transformed collagen.
The maturing system: This causes collagen levels to normally decay over the long run.
8 How can you  Deal with boost collagen production
Good food sources can help the body produce collagen.
For instance, cells need cancer prevention agents like Vitamins E and C to ensure themselves.
Nutrient C is additionally useful for fixing collagen filaments.
It has been displayed to add to sound collagen digestion.
Supplements that might uphold collagen development include:
Proline: in meat, cabbage, soy, cheddar and proteins;
Anthocyanidins: in cherries blueberries, blackberries and raspberries;
Nutrient C: in oranges, broccoli, chime peppers and strawberries;
Copper: in nuts, shellfish, and red meat;
Nutrient A: in creature food sources and plant food varieties like beta-carotene.
9 Medicines to invigorate collagen creation
Numerous items that contain collagen, including creams, collagen covers and powders.
They guarantee to rejuvenate the skin by expanding collagen levels in the body.
Last idea
This is impossible, be that as it may, as collagen particles are too enormous to be in any way assimilated through

Talos Energy, U.S. Coast Guard Respond to Spill off Port Fourchon
The U.S. Coast Guard is working with Houston-based oil company Talos Energy to respond to a large spill off the coast of Port Fourchon, Louisiana.
The slick was first identified by the Associated Press using satellite photographs provided by NOAA. The agency has published a full set of high resolution imagery of some of the key areas hit by Hurricane Ida last week, including Port Fourchon. The slick is clearly visible to the east of the port's approaches.
Port Fourchon is a receiving hub for offshore oil and gas pipelines, and the seabed just off its coast is a maze of pipe networks. One of the operations in the vicinity of the spill used to belong to Talos, which produced oil from a field nearby until 2017. The Coast Guard initially suggested that Talos bore responsibility as the operator, but the firm denied involvement, saying that it had plugged its wells and removed the associated pipelines by 2019. Still, Talos called in two spill response vessels and a dive support vessel, and cleanup operations are under way.
On Sunday, Talos said that its divers had inspected the site and identified the source of the leak as a ruptured 12-inch-diameter pipeline, which had been pulled out of its trench. Talos said that it is not the owner of the line, and it is working with the Coast Guard and other regulators to identify the responsible party. Like most of Louisiana's near-coastal waters, the area's oil and gas deposits have been in active development for decades, with multiple operators working in the same region.
Talos said that the rate of the spill appears to have slowed over the weekend, with less visible oil on the surface. No shoreline impacts have been reported to date.
NOAA satellite imaging also identified a large rainbow sheen at the Alliance Refinery complex in Belle Chasse, Louisiana early last week. In a statement, operator Phillips 66 said that the spill was contained within the refinery's grounds. A spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality told AP that the flooding had breached a levee at the refinery, and it is unknown how much oil might have escaped.
Lower Mississippi reopens to all traffic
The Captain of the Port for New Orleans has reopened all of the Lower Mississippi to vessel traffic, including areas previously closed due to downed powerlines.
During the storm, a high-tension powerline fell into the river next to the former Avondale Shipyard site west of New Orleans, blocking marine traffic for days. The shutdown impeded the flow of barge traffic carrying Midwestern grain to dry bulk export hubs at the Port of New Orleans, raising concerns among agribusiness interests.

— USCG Heartland (@USCGHeartland) September 4, 2021
“Working alongside key federal, state, parish, city and maritime industry leaders, we’ve made significant progress reconstituting ports and waterways throughout Southeast Louisiana,” said Capt. Will Watson, the captain of the port for Sector New Orleans. “The marine transportation system in this region connects our heartland’s harvest with global markets and provides vital energy supply to our nation. We continue to support the State of Louisiana as we collectively recover from the impacts of Hurricane Ida.”
Some restrictions still apply. Upriver from Avondale as far as the Sunshine Bridge (mile marker 108-167), vessels are instructed to maintain their slowest safe speed when passing ongoing vessel salvage operations. Tows are restricted to six barges wide, and all vessels should keep as close to the center as possible, as there may still be sunken obstructions near the banks. Downriver, a large field of partially sunken barges is still located on the right descending bank at river miles 56-58.
Deep draft vessels on the Lower Mississipi are still restricted to daylight transit only, as aids to navigation may be out of place and storm debris and shoaling may present hazards.
