Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
The film I decided to watch this week was Bonnie and Clyde. I was very excited to watch this film because I have heard lots of great things about it, I always hear others refrence to bonnie and Clyde so I was very interested in the movie. It is a very unique movie with an interesting story. The film was released in 1967 and directed by Arthur Penn, it has been extremely popular ever sense. It is based on a true story about the lives of very famous criminals . This was around the time of the great depression when there was a lot of economic hardships and people struggled with employment. The story is about a criminal couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, when bonnie meets Clyde she instantly falls for him. Despite him showing little affection from the beginning she decided to stay with him and take on a criminal journey with him. The couple would rob banks and kill people while on the run from the police. There were a lot of mixed reviews about the film it became very controversial because the film was too violent.
Bonnie and Clyde has a very unique style, it romanticizes the life of the criminal couple while showing all of the hardships they encountered. The production budget for the film was very high 2.5 million dollars went into making it. Domestically they earned $50,700,000. World wide the movie made 50,700,128 and has been very successful sense. I believe it is an unconventional film, although it showed the villains as sympathetic people instead of criminals there are a lot of violent and graphic scenes. It didn't necessarily follow the rules of mainstream cinema. A lot of historical events happened around the time of the movie, I think this is one of the reasons it became so popular. It was not only based on a true story but it shows a little bit of the hardships people went through around the Great Depression era.
Robert Ebert had very strong opinions about the film, he thought it was the best American Movie that year. He says "Bonnie and Clyde" is a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance. It is also pitilessly cruel, filled with sympathy, nauseating, funny, heartbreaking, and astonishingly beautiful." I can see why people loved this movie and it is truly a classic historical film.
Some major events that happened in 1967, were the Vietnam war early in the year and Dr. Martin Luther Kings first Speech about it. "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence". The speech Took place at Riverside Church, in New York City. In his speech he said "If America's soul becomes totally poisoned, part of the autopsy must read: Vietnam. It can never be saved so long as it destroys the deepest hopes of men the world over. So it is that those of us who are yet determined that America will be are led down the path of protest and dissent, working for the health of our land." A lot of people were concerned that his speech would not be a movement of peace and were afraid it would be perceived in a different way.
