[pañuelo melody] by acastle
[pañuelo melody] by acastle
There are aspects about this story that really hit home for me. (Forgive me, I'm dumping a lot of feelings without proofreading–I'm probably rambling).
There is a running theme of hidden connections and destiny that acastle wrote in their fic. It may just be headcanon, but afaik Casey has mentioned that Alex and Henry are destined to be together in any universe, this fic really drives that idea home.
Mild spoilers below, but acastle referenced Utada Hikaru in their story multiple times, and I grew up listening to them (HUGE Kingdom Hearts fan here). The feeling I had when acastle referenced one of their songs–through the opening lyrics that I recognized (First Love by Utada Hikaru) , I literally went "nooooooo wayyyyyyyy.......???!!!!"
And then acastle referenced Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto (amazing piano instrumental written for the movie of the same name). Utada also wrote a song and sampled Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (also same title). I wish I could truly describe when all the pieces connected together, it was like greeting an old friend. It was also like getting hit by a truck. It was all very overwhelming (I may or may not have started tearing up writing this portion.)
This story takes place in winter in Japan, and it's chilly, and icy, and the angst is dialled up to eleven, but like with all of acastle's stories, there is so much love.
The main inspiration for this cover is Japanese artist Ikenaga Yasunari (examples below). I wanted to replicate the vibe, but I opted for more colour. I was also inspired by traditional Japanese paintings, especially with how soft and delicate snow is often painted.
I chose the promotional image of Alex and Henry in the V&A as the pose. I had initially planned to have Alex and Henry walking in the Higashiyama Ward at night (location described in the fic) , illuminated by streetlights and joined by the red string of fate, but it didn't materialize.
The Japanese in the front translates literally to "Handkerchief melody – hankachi and 旋律 (Kanji for melody/tune). Handkerchief from pañuelo (the Spanish meaning, not Filipino ) references the one that Alex uses to wipe his mouth as a child before giving his relatives a kiss on the cheek. It is also the title of the song Alex writes and releases before running away to Japan.
The characters in the corner is 禁色 is from the novel that Henry read that inspired his work trip to Japan. Context is in the story. It's very poignant and melancholic.
Thank you so much to Louie (@hrhprinceacd on Twitter) for helping me with the Japanese title, and for @ash-morrison for blind-choosing this cover to release from my vault.
Just adding that the gingko branch background is from an adobe stock photo that I didn't really want to pay for so I designed my own version from scratch (original reference below).
The full poster that can be added to the .epub file for your kindle/e-book reader is at the end of the post! If you need any assistance, please don't be afraid to ask!

A hanging scroll handwritten by Shinsengumi Commander Kondo Isami is found in Kyoto

A hanging scroll handwritten by Kondo Isami (1834-68), the Commander of the Shinsengumi who was active in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period, has been found in Kyoto. It is believed to be a Chinese poem on the theme of "heroism," written by Kondo as a token of gratitude when he borrowed money from wealthy merchants to raise funds for his activities. Only a few hanging scrolls in Kondo's handwriting have been found, and it is said to be a valuable discovery to understand who Kondo was as a person.
The hanging scroll is 196 cm long and 63 cm wide (the calligraphy is 136 cm long and 60 cm wide). An art dealer in the city had acquired the scroll in Osaka in 2008, and this month, a doctor in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, had purchased it. It was taken to the Ryozen History Museum (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto), a history museum focusing on the Bakumatsu era, where Kimura Sachihiko, head curator of Bakumatsu history, determined that the calligraphy was authentic based on the handwriting and signature.
Although the details of the calligraphy have not yet been clarified, it expresses the feelings of a "hero" and is signed "Swordsman, Kondo.
According to Kimura, the calligraphy is similar in form to a hanging scroll (owned by the Tokyo National Museum) written around 1863, the same year Kondo and his men arrived in Kyoto from the Kanto region. It is believed to be from the same period. In the same year, Kondo and the others were given the name "Shinsengumi" in recognition of their military service, and they were engaged in cracking down on the militant fighters of the anti-shogunate movement. They sometimes forcefully borrowed money from wealthy merchants in Osaka and Kyoto and left behind such writings.
Kimura said, "There is no doubt that Kondo liked the calligraphy of Rai Sanyo, a scholar of Chinese classics, and imitated him. It shows Kondo's enthusiasm at that time when he became a samurai, which he had longed to become.

日本家屋の夏らしい雰囲気が味わいたくて、東福寺塔頭 光明院 波心庭に伺いました。

Komyo-in Temple is a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.
(Tofuku-ji Temple has more than 20 sub-temples. Other famous sub-temples are “Funda-in Temple” and “Reiun-in Temple”.)
This temple was founded by Kinzan Myosho in 1391.
(He was a Buddhist priest of the Rinzai sect of the Muromachi era and was a 70th chief priest of Tofuku-ji Temple.)
The best highlight of this temple is a Japanese garden with dry landscape.
This Japanese garden is called “Hashintei“.
It is a beautiful garden which was created by Mirei SHIGEMORI who was a famous Japanese gardener during the Showa period.
(He was known as the “Sesshu of the Showa period“.)
(Mirei SHIGEMORI (1896-1975) (his real name was Kazuo SHIGEMORI) was a Japanese gardener during the Showa period and a researcher into the history of Japanese gardens.)

You guys! With Seiko's parents as our official witnesses, @life_for_pianos and I got officially married at the Higashiyama Ward office in Kyoto on December 26th! We couldn't have done it without the support of our friends and family in Kyoto, Kentucky, Amami Oshima, and beyond.😍 皆んな様!私と聖子は12月26日に京都市東山区役所で婚姻届を出しました! 京都とケンタッキーと奄美大島での 友達達や家族のサポートがなければ、私たちはそれを出来なかったでしょう.. 誠に有難うございました✨✌️ We're planning to move to Kyoto and have our wedding ceremony in Kyoto in August. Since it is such a long trip and we figured a lot of friends can't make it, we decided to make a registry at @amazonjapan (because wedding registries on other sites aren't really a thing in Japan).
