hello, im not sure if requests are open or closed, if they're closed you can ignore this ^^
reader is female.
can i request a one shot where the reader is a part of team urameshi and reader and hiei were secretly dating until (either member of your choice maybe kurama or something) walks in on the two of them kissing and eventually they come out that they've been dating. :P
☆ author's note : a little bit suggestive but not too much detail, I wrote most of this while i was super drunk last night and finally got around to finishing it up today, not sure if i love the ending tbh, but i hope this is to your liking ! ♡
❝ JUST BETWEEN US ❞

You weren’t sure what to call it. At first it started with bouts of protectiveness, almost constantly initiated by Hiei. The Dark Tournament was a vicious, cruel game that in a way, exposed a softer side of Team Urameshi as a whole. How you all cared for one another. How you would all willingly fight a stadium full of monsters for one another. It a was a fast track way to bond for a pair of teammates that knew little to nothing of each other previous to boarding that boat and fighting to the death one round after another.
You couldn’t tell that anything had changed about him after the first match. You were bloodied, slightly concussed, and amped up by the adrenaline of having won your first fight. Bruises no doubt littered your entire body. Yusuke congratulated you with a rough pat on the back, his hand accidentally slapping against a particularly deep wound. You gave Kuwabara a half hug on your way back, his embrace gentler, but still sturdy with relief.
When your eyes broke contact with the healthy green grass you stamped beneath your feet, you met Hiei’s crimson eyes.
Almost like an accident, at first. How long had he been staring? His eyes quickly darted to the left, almost embarrassed to have been caught watching you. But why would that be unusual? You figured he was just still learning it was normal to care about his friends.
You instinctively stood beside him for the remainder of the fights. Not much conversation, both of your attention glued to the arena before you. Your shoulders feeling like magnets. More effort to distance yourself from his side than it took to stay there. Your eyes occasionally meeting when you dare to look from the fight to his face. Like he had been staring. A light pink dusting his cheeks when he’s caught in the act before he immediately looks away. Another complaint if you stare for too long.
If Kuwabara breathed too hard you never heard the end of it from Hiei. If a contestant took a misstep in the arena he had a corrective remark to make of it.
When your hand accidentally brushed his…he was silent. When your eyes met his in the middle of a group conversation…he was silent.
It wasn’t until one of your matches went sideways that he decided not to waste anymore time.
Feeling out powered. Out classed. Running out of ideas. Out of time… You thought you might really die in front of your friends and a stadium full of demons chanting, praying for more of your blood to spill on the pavement. Your vision gets blurry after losing enough blood. It’s like seeing through static. Lungs burning with exertion. Muscles freezing, locking in place. This is it, you think. This is death.
And Hiei’s voice breaks through the thick fog of your surrender.
“Fight, (y/n), fight!”
It’s by some miracle your opponent passes out seconds before you. You released a burst of energy, you don’t even know how, to knock them out of the ring and begin the count down. The sound of the announcer’s eager voice ringing in your eyes. One…two… staggering…and darkness.
The air conditioner makes a comforting noise in the darkness of the hotel room. It’s a gentle hum. Sometimes a staccato to disrupt the pattern. Before your eyes even open, a heavy pounding begins in your head. Aching all over. Body heavy with exhaustion. And yet…your body fights. Shooting up in bed. Tense and primed for violence. Your hands balled into fists as your eyes adjust to the dark hotel room…
“Hn, finally. You’ve been sleeping for hours.”
It’s Hiei. His voice stirring an unfamiliar warmth in your belly that relaxes your muscles, your fight or flight instincts taking a back seat to an entirely new set of instincts. Of warmth…of uncertainty. You fidget in the white linen bed they assigned to you and let out a deep sigh you didn’t know you were holding in. “Did we win?”
“Obviously.”
You haven’t dared to look at him yet, you hand encasing your face as your body adjusts to its surroundings. The bed dips with his weight as he comes to sit beside you, bringing a cool cup of water up to your lips and tipping it. Holding the glass as you sip and then gulp all the water within the glass. A bead of water escapes from your lips, drips down the side as Hiei retracts the glass.
Unbeknownst to you, he watches that little bead of water carefully. He watches your face carefully the same way he watched over you while you slept. Examining your breathing, dressing your wounds.. The moonlight bounces off the side of your cheek and casts a glow around your features. Features he worried he’d never see again. The face he saw bloodied and battered in the arena. The face he had secretly hoped he’d get to enjoy for years to come…
When you finally turn to look into his crimson eyes…he is electric… A live wire full of emotion and pain. Before either of you even realize, his hand is under your chin and pulling your face close into an innocent kiss. A press of his lips against yours, and moving fervently, desperately against yours until he opens his mouth and lets your taste in. Until he’s on top of you in bed, moving the sheets away from your body to feel you close. Until you’re gasping at the proximity. Until you’re wondering if you really did win that fight or maybe if you’ve descending into a blissful hell and hiei’s there to greet you with the most blissful sins imaginable.
No one notices for the rest of the tournament.
And, why would they? A life for death scenario each and every day. Never knowing whether or not you’d all finally make it home or if it’d be your last night on earth. Murdered in front of a live audience desperately cheering and hoping to see as much of a mess of your innards as possible.
You and Hiei made the most of it.
After everyone had fallen asleep. After everyone had made their way into their respective rooms. Whether it had been an exhaustive training day or an actual fight in the arena. You kept your door unlocked. Sometimes wandering through the halls of the hotel into his room, sometimes him seeking you out. Every touch of his calloused hands against your face. Every stolen glance or secret kiss. Every moment you had of darkness and peace after the tournament was indulged in between the two of you.
There were a few times you worried the secret would be given away. He didn’t like for anyone to stand too close to you. He didn’t like for you to volunteer for any fights, not if the four of them could handle it. It wouldn’t always be words or outward aggression he’d show to keep others away from you. Sometimes it was just an ominous energy emanating from him if someone else took the seat beside you. It took everything within his power not to drape an arm around you and tell his teammates flat out to back off. Don’t touch her. Don’t look at her. She’s mine…
Naturally, a part of you worried that it would all come to an end once the tournament was over. No matter how sad or distant it made you feel, you always welcomed the fire demon into your arms and into your heart whenever he made his presence known. Life was too short to waste time worrying about a future that might never come. Not when you already had everything you wanted in your arms.
Despite having made it all the way back home, you were pleasantly surprised when his affections didn’t stop then.
He still needed to see you. Still needed you in his arms. Still needed your lips and hips pressed against his. There was no one else but him. There was no one else but you. It was a bit hard to define the limits, but Hiei seemed to understand what you were. You were his. And he was yours. And that was enough for a demon from another world to understand.
Moments alone were easier to come by after the tournament. Hiei would seek you out whenever he felt like it, and the others were occupied with going back into the daily routines they held before. So when the team was called back together for another mission, you two were a bit out of practice in the sneaking around department.
The gang had been around each other almost every second during the last few days.
No alone time. No stolen kisses or quick pecks, not while the others were present and within sight. And every moment that Hiei had to go without your touch was another moment of growing agitation.
Kuwabara finally dozes off laying on the living room floor. The lights are dim in his family room, everyone had been strategizing hard for the next mission. Yusuke stretches his legs in front of him from where he leans against the couch, getting lost staring at the screen of his phone. Kurama stands stiffly before excusing himself for a light walk around the neighborhood.
You lock eyes with Hiei.
He gets up and disappears further into the house. You wait a few minutes. Eyes darting between the two boys in the room. Both tired and both not paying any attention. You finally stand and follow Hiei into an empty bedroom.
The room is dark, and the door closes behind you before your eyes even adjust to the darkness and register his presence.
It's his hand at your waist you recognize before finally meeting his crimson gaze. Your hand naturally drifts up to his cheek, cupping his face the way you've done dozens of times before.
He doesn't say anything. Doesn't need to. Not when his body already fills the silence. I need you. I miss you. I need you closer. I need your touch...
When his lips finally press against yours, his kiss is heated and desperate and heavy with wanting. Wasting no time to slip his tongue into your mouth, exploring your familiar taste and claiming you the way he had been dying to for so many days in a row.
Click.
The doorknob clicks open and the door bumps into the wall as it swings open. "Oh my god."
Hiei had instinctively gripped you tighter at the sound, pulling you close with one arm as his other hand gripped the handle of his sword.
A move which he instantly regretted, given the sight.
"Oh my god!" Yusuke points with a devilish grin, laughing at the unexpected discovery, "Are you two dating?! Hiei, you dog!"
Hiei grimaces at the detective's discovery. His grip on you only slightly loosening as he turns to threaten Yusuke. "Shut up you idiot."
"Oh my god, how did we not notice?! How long has this been going on for?!"
The discovery is entertaining enough for Yusuke to go on and on, only for Kuwabara to wake up and barge in and the entire secret is exposed. On the one hand, it's a bit of relief that you two won't have to sneak around the gang anymore. On the other, it's a relentless barrage of jokes and euphemisms while the two dummies come to terms with the discovery. At least Hiei won't be as agitated during the team meetings anymore, if he somehow manages not to kill one of them before the night's over.

Humdrum
a/n: a little sweetness in the pointless humdrum. not my favorite, but not everything has to be a banger, i suppose. summary: you get baseball tickets from your company to the newly built shochiku dome and decide to bring your favorite fire demon out to a ball game. cw: fluff. reader applies make up at the start. no gendered pronouns used. gn!reader. wc: 3,489.
There was a soft thump outside your balcony. The glass door, generally left unlocked, creaked open.
“Right on time,” you said, applying the last bit of make-up product to your face. You glanced at the demon that stepped into your studio apartment without so much as a grunt of acknowledgment. Your white cat crawled out from under your bed and headed toward him, rubbing against his leg. Hiei stepped over her, and though he ignored her affectionate purring, you knew he petted her when you weren’t looking.
“Give her a pat and let’s go,” you announced. “We are watching a baseball game tonight!”
“No. Go alone,” Hiei said instantly. You watched as he had the audacity to sit down on your bed and make himself comfortable after rejecting you—with his shoes still on.
“Uh, no, we’re going together,” you corrected. “And get your shoes off my bed, Hiei. Maybe shoes are okay in the Demon World, where you live in caves and pits, but that’s a cotton fucking mattress.”
He glared at you but shifted so that he was sitting on the edge of your bed as you moved around the apartment; you selected a small fanny pack that would allow you to get in and out of the stadium with ease as well as the miscellaneous items that would go into it.
“Anyways, it’s the Dragons versus the Wasps at the new Shochiku Dome, and my company so kindly”—the word was spit with venom—“gave me baseball tickets as a reward for working a hundred hours this pay period, even though I would’ve preferred a raise… And, actually, I don’t even like baseball—”
“—It’s pitiable how you think I care—”
“—But, we are going and we are going together,” you finished, unperturbed by his interruption.
“Hn. Fascinating,” he remarked, “but I’d sooner impale myself on my sword.”
You rolled your eyes at his dramatics. He was looking down at your cat; the traitor was laying down next to him, pawing the air. Even though Hiei’s feet weren’t on your bed anymore, he still didn’t take off his shoes, leaving them to dirty your rug. Asshole.
“Fine,” you said abruptly. “It’s to be expected. The great Hiei is scared of a little unknown.”
“Why the hell would I be scared?”
You kept your face nonchalant, even though you were snickering triumphantly inside. You went through the motions of preparing to leave—buckling the fanny pack, slipping on your shoes, checking your outfit in the hanging mirror—not sparing him any passing glance.
“It’s okay, Hiei. It’s understandable. Maybe you’re big and bad in battles, but you’re at a complete loss when it comes to anything regarding humans. Of course you would be a little hesitant in coming to the baseball stadium where you would feel so small and out of your element. You know what? It was my fault for even asking; I didn’t even take into consideration your feelings on the matter.”
“Don’t waste your breath,” Hiei retorted. In a show of (attempted) dominance, he kicked his shoed feet back onto the bed, now with the traitorous feline curled on his lap. “I’m not so simple-minded that I’d give in to such an obvious baiting tactic.”
You felt your eye twitch, but forced your face to stay cool and unbothered. He didn’t need to be so simple-minded; just simple enough.
“Mhm,” you hummed with a nod. “Well, I’ll be sure to let Kuwabara know, next time I see him, that, to prove you weren’t scared of baseball, you sat in my apartment. Alone. In the dark. With my cat.”
With that, you turned off the overhead lights, closed the door, and left.
Forty-five minutes later, when you made it to the front of the stadium, Hiei dropped down next to you with a scowl, startling the couple behind you who had just rounded the corner. They looked back and forth to each other, and then glanced up to the sky, but neither you, Hiei, nor God were going to answer.
In response to your victorious grin, he said, “If this is dull, I’ll kill everyone in the stadium.”
“Hiei! That is not something you can say in public!”
He looked away as though uninterested, but you saw the quick upward twitch of his lip into a half-smirk for a half-second.
&&
Hiei walked out from behind a corner after you made it through security, having jumped over the process because he wasn’t going to relinquish his sword. He stood by your side, and the two of you looked at the huge crowd of people and the hustle and bustle of workers, you in awe and interest and Hiei in annoyance and apathy.
“Welcome to the Shochiku Dome,” you said. “They finished it a few months ago.”
There were dozens upon dozens of stalls selling Japanese and western foods; there were vendors selling merchandise; and, following the excited pointing of an elementary school kid with their parents, you saw that there was also a train about a hundred feet above the field, sculpted to look like the Shinkansen. You wondered if it was just there as interesting decor—but then you saw a man waving from inside it. Suddenly the train began to move forward on its tracks to the loud enthusiasm of the kids.
“Wow, they really went all out,” you said, but Hiei didn’t respond. He often didn’t, but you didn’t mind. Without warning, you linked arms with him. “Let’s get some food before we find our seats.”
“Let go or I cut it off,” he hissed, arm tensing in your hold..
“The crowd’s crazy, Hiei; this way, we don’t lose each other. Some of us dinky humans don’t have super senses or teleportation skills.”
You released him when you got in line and linked arms again when you decided on another stall. The strategy of not holding onto him for long seemed to work well; he endured the quick, forced proximity without further threats of forced amputation (much like your cat tolerating a three-second hug before violently thrashing in your arms).
Rather than having him pick anything out, you opted to buy whatever you found enticing. You didn’t want to overload his senses; you were already physically dragging him around in crowds. You were pretty sure he was bluffing about the whole murdering everyone in the stadium, but you didn’t want to test it. A demon was a demon, after all, and he had never explained the rules and politics of the Demon World, so maybe there were terrible things he could get away with and you were simply none the wiser.
Finally, all the food was gathered, and the two of you juggled everything back to your seats. Takoyaki, grilled wieners, yakitori, nachos, shaved ice, and one large soda with two straws to share, all balanced either in your hands or on your laps. You gazed down with a salivating smile, but Hiei looked as though you were offering him slime.
“It looks repulsive,” he said.
“Don’t be dramatic,” you said. “You can’t go wrong with sports food. Which one do you want to try first?”
“None.”
“Great, takoyaki it is!”
Even though Hiei had expressed the absolute opposite of excitement or even slight interest in the food, he still ate it. He ate whichever one you pointed out, and he sipped the soda, too (from the same straw as you, you noticed). And, after trying everything once, he continued to eat. That was how you figured out he liked the takoyaki, nachos, and shaved ice best; he didn’t care much for the grilled wieners or the yakitori, which was surprising. You would’ve bet that, of all the options, the demon would at least like the meat on a stick, but you supposed Hiei was surprising in a variety of ways.
As you watched him reach for another cheesy nacho chip, you couldn’t help the knowing smile. “Got the itch to slaughter the stadium yet?” you teased.
He sent you an annoyed look as you gently bumped his shoulder with yours. “No,” he said, though before you could celebrate, he added, “but there’s plenty of time to change my mind.”
You laughed, leaving the last takoyaki for him and finishing the rest of the yakitori.
&&
Eventually, after the two of you ate all of the food and tucked the plates and trash under your seats to keep them out of the way, all that was left was to watch the game. Once your focus shifted to the game, though, it finally dawned on you that you were quite far from the field. It wasn’t that the seats were terrible, but considering that they were supposed to be a token of appreciation for your work and loyalty, you were feeling more than miffed that your company couldn’t offer a little more than not-nosebleed seats. It didn’t even matter that you didn’t care for baseball; it was the principle of the matter.
Hiei, noticing your abrupt slouch and frown, asked, “What?”
You sighed. “We don’t need to be in the VIP box, but damn, it feels like the train is closer to the field than we are…”
After a beat, he said, “Explain.”
“What, the VIP box?”
“The human custom. Company rewards. Explain it.” He had his arms crossed, staring bored down at the diamond field, looking liked he’d rather be fighting in the pits of hell than watching a baseball game—but you still felt like he was looking at you, like he was seeing you, just by the mere fact that he was listening, that he had asked.
“Basically, when you’re working for a company, they give you rewards. What you want are bonuses—more money at the end of the year, usually—or raises, which is ideal. My dumb company is trying this new thing where, instead of giving you bonuses or raises, they give out more rewards like gift cards or gift baskets, or tickets to events like baseball games.”
A few more beats passed, and you thought he wasn’t going to respond, but then, to your surprised, he asked, “Why?”
You were simultaneously aggravated by the topic of your company trying to get away without paying its workers what they deserved and elated that Hiei was taking so much interest in your feelings and “human customs.”
“It’s cheaper than giving you a raise or a bonus,” you explained. “I don’t follow anything baseball related, but it was either this or a rice cooker, and I already got a new one, so…”
“That is the overall consensus?” Hiei asked. “The workers would prefer raises over base ball gifts?”
“Well, yeah, pretty much.”
“Then just slaughter them.”
“Huh?”
“The supervising humans. Threaten to take their heads if they do not answer to your demands. Simple.”
He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, and you had to bite back a smile. “Nice, but…not how it works here in the Human World,” you told him. “We can’t just kill the execs. Thanks, though, I guess.”
Hiei scoffed. “That is why we’re here wasting our time with a sport neither of us understand in seats designed to torture its user.”
“Yeah…the seats are pretty ass,” you snickered. “…But at least we have each other.” For emphasis, you nudged his shoulder with yours again.
“Idiotic.”
Abruptly, there was sharp clack—the ball flew overhead: a potential homerun, this much you knew. Everyone stood up excitedly; even you sat forward in your seat and Hiei tilted his head to squint at the ball soaring high above, beneath bright stadium lights—and then a rival player caught it and there was a great cheering on the other side and a grumble of disappointment on the home team’s side.
“What does that mean?” Hiei asked.
“Who knows, but that was kind of exciting, right?” you said with a cheeky grin.
“How is your understanding of your own species’ custom so pitiful?”
“Alright, I understand some things,” your protested. “Um. Okay, so there are two teams.”
“I can see that, obviously.”
“Shut up!” you snorted. “There are two teams, and each team gets a few tries to hit the ball with the bat, and you want to hit it far and high enough so you can run around the bases—those little diamond things in the ground. When you make it all the away around, that’s one point.”
“What’s the purpose?”
“To get the most points.”
“And the purpose of having events like this?”
“It’s just for fun. I mean, it’s their job, too. They bring honor and pride and, uh, gloating rights to the team and city. People like it.”
He snorted derisively. “Humans waste their time running around diamonds embedded in the dirt than train.”
“Well, humans don’t have to fight monsters every day,” you pointed out, but he didn’t seem convinced. “Don’t demons do anything for fun?”
The scornful look Hiei gave you told you that most, if not all, demonic hobbies included spilling other demons’ blood.
“Things aren’t done for fun,” he said mockingly. “They’re done for power. Strength. Ensure your rightful place at the top.”
“Um—if you’re a good sports player, humans consider you at the top in a way.”
“Hn. Foolish.”
The entire game was spent like that, small conversations here and there about rule clarifications (which you mostly deflected or completely made up) and questions about the odd things that people did (what players did for good luck before stepping to bat or why the home team chanted to support them). Then, small talk led to discussions about the difference between demonkind and humankind. You learned that there was more variety among human culture and customs. The Demon World didn’t seem to have the same comfort or luxurious that Earth provided. It was a constant fight for resources and survival. Much of the demon customs seemed to revolve around who was the strongest, which explained a lot of how Hiei viewed the alien world around him.
It was interesting. It was sweet. There wasn’t anything affectionate that was said, and nothing was even said affectionately. Most of the time, Hiei didn’t make any eye contact with you, but his focus was on you—you knew by the reactions, by the gentle beats in conversation, not a lull but a pause, a breath, a moment to gather thoughts and ask you another question or answer one of yours.
At one point, you got up to go buy popcorn and get a drink refill. You offered him a piece of popcorn after a few minutes, and he accepted. One bite became two became three, and soon, you gave him the bag to hold and eat. You leaned your shoulder against him, and when one minute became two became three, you took the chance to lean your head against his shoulder. Hiei tensed up under you, but he didn’t say anything. He didn’t move, didn’t eat another bite. You wondered if it was because he was uncomfortable, or maybe he was insecure or unsure, or maybe he was just trying to keep from jostling you.
The heat of his body warmed you. Maybe it was even warmer with you so close—not because of how close you were to his body, but how close you were to him (here was a difference, you thought).
You could fall asleep like this, if the seats weren’t so painful.
Suddenly, there was another clack, a loud smashing of bat against ball. This time, it really was a homerun. Everyone cheered as the ball went overhead, disappearing into the lights. The crowd cheered and, caught up in the energy of the people around you, you sat up, grinning, looking back at Hiei who quietly met your gaze.
&&
It was only the fireworks left, but Hiei seemed to be getting antsy. You had told him that it would only be fifteen more minutes, but he had stood irritably and glared at you impatiently, telling you to get up with gritted teeth.
You sighed, following him out of the stadium. The fireworks would’ve been a nice close out to a nice night. You wondered if that meant that you were the only one that had been enjoying it, if you were the only one that had been happy with the time spent with him and he was the one who was barely tolerating it. You hadn’t thought it was that bad: he had eaten the food and the snacks; he had conversed with you; he had even let you lean against him. You had even caught a brief, impressed look on his face at one play. Perhaps you should just be grateful that he even comes to visit you when he he had no need to. Perhaps you shouldn’t ask for anything more.
But then, as soon as you stepped outside, he grabbed your wrist and led you to an area hidden out of view.
“What the heck are we doing?” you asked.
“Quiet.” He looked around before turning his back to you. “Get on.”
“Huh?”
“Hurry up before I leave you here,” he said.
You stared at his back, thinking of the first time you had met him; he had saved you from a demon—and he was shirtless. You could still see, clear as day, his back and shoulder muscles tensing and flexing as he moved.
“Today, fool.”
“Shut up,” you muttered.
You squeezed the top of the popcorn bag together to scrunch it close, keeping it from spilling. You stepped forward, throwing your hands tentatively over his shoulders. When you lifted one leg to wrap around his hip, your face warmed. You jumped off with your other leg, dropping your weight against his back; Hiei grabbed your thighs. You could feel the heat from his coarse fingers, pressed against the fabric of your pants. You wondered if he could feel the softness there underneath.
Before you could ask what his plan was, what he wanted, if he could feel your heartbeat, so rapid against his back, Hiei shot up straight into the sky, the vertical path parallel to the stadium. You couldn’t tell if the gasp you heard was one that had left your diaphragm or the diaphragm of the man that had just stumbled drunkenly around the corner.
The city was beautiful. The sky was so, so big from up there. Lights flickered beneath you of people eking out a quiet existence. Buildings tried to scratch their height into the clouds. The winding streets lit up with a thousand pedestrians, their phones lighting up roads like starlight.
Hiei jumped off the stadium wall and a tall tree, landing easily on the stadium roof, the part of it that wasn’t open. There was a giant gap in the middle from where the roof had parted, showing the field and the seats far down below. You walked up next to Hiei, grabbing his arm to ground yourself; you were so high up that your legs and feet were tingling uncomfortably.
“Holy shit,” you said. “We should’ve been up here from the very start.”
“It wouldn’t have helped the view.”
He was right. Everyone was too small from up there. You wouldn’t have seen any of the plays, any of the balls flying across the heads of the players, but as you looked out at the crawling expanse of the city and its lights, you thought you wouldn’t have minded. You had never seen anything more romantic, or breathtaking, or wondrous.
You tugged on his arm to signal to him and he held you steady as you sat down, the tingling feeling never leaving your feet. Hiei sat down beside you, leaning back on his right arm that was propped a little too close into your space. (The part of your hips closest to his hand was tingling, too.) Music started to play from below, and just as the notes swelled, fireworks lit up the night sky in a crescendo of colors and shapes. One flower after another shimmered against the dim dark, sparking and chattering in the way that ember did before exhaling into smoke. Shadows dipped and disappeared across your face followed by the glimmering explosions highlighting your nose and cheekbones, a continuous cycle of the day and night sweeping across your cheeks.
“What’s the purpose of this?” Hiei asked, his voice strangely low and strangely surrounding you.
“Another thing for fun,” you replied. “Just ‘cause.”
“Humans do a lot of pointless things.”
You shrugged. “Maybe because we lead a lot of pointless lives.”
He grunted, laying down and crossing his hands underneath his head. “Wake me up when it’s over,” he said, closing his eyes.
—But maybe that was a pointless thing, too, because you caught him glancing at you under the red glow of the fireworks, and he caught you wondering if he’d let you lay in his arms.

Kurama holds himself back from pursuing you.
He’s still learning to be a human, and he knows he’s lived a life you couldn’t understand. A life you didn’t, one as a demon. But he’s in no position to erase your memories, not when you’re so entangled with his friends and now his life. Even then, you are such an odd case, that he knows he’d at least hesitate to do it if he could. Or perhaps, if he had to. Safety would be his main concern, or at least, he’d tell himself and anybody who asks that it is.
Deep down, maybe it’s that he’s harboring some sort of affection for you. So much so that now, looking at your face, mostly illuminated by some mix of pale moonlight and a dull street light, he can’t walk away. He’s got so much self control, but his eyes are falling on your lips as you speak. He’d never forget himself, even for a second, but in the back of his mind, he feels something for you.
He’s already decided that he won’t approach you, instead opting to wait for you to initiate. But he won’t be so uptight anymore… after all, his mother would want him to fall in love, get married, and be happy. He’s got a good grip on human emotion, enough to know that what he feels for you isn’t going away.
He doesn’t do anything to prevent you from seeing the way his eyes soften when he looks at you. He doesn’t hide the way he worries about you, no, he checks on you immediately. And he doesn’t do anything to stop you as you lean in, instead he allows himself to close the gap.
The kiss is gentle and slow, as polite as he is. It doesn’t last more than a few seconds, but his eyes linger on yours afterwards. He’ll take things slow with you.

Hiya, fellow Hiei fan!
Before I suggest a possible request, I first want to say that I love your writing! ^^ The way you write is so fun to read; I love what I've seen and I appreciate you sharing your work with us.
If you're looking for any suggestions, I wonder what your take on protective Hiei would be; like how he'd react to someone hurting the person he liked. 🤔Would he be consumed by rage or would he wait it out to see how you'd protect yourself first? And if the latter, would that lead to anything 'spicy' if he liked what he saw? >//>
Whether you choose to do anything with the above, thanks again for taking the time to create stories around Hiei! You're amazing 👏💖
Hiya, Anon! You are incredibly sweet! Thank you so much. This is super late! I hope you see it :’)
Protective Hiei
gender neutral, sfw (slightly suggestive, but vanilla)
✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻
𓆩⟡𓆪 We all know Hiei would be overflowing with rage if someone deliberately hurt you, but his next move depends on your fighting abilities!
𓆩⟡𓆪 If you have a history of being well versed in combat, Hiei lets you handle your own battles. He understands that you don’t need a babysitter. If he were to jump to the rescue every time you found yourself in danger, it would be an insult to your capabilities as a fighter.
𓆩⟡𓆪 It will take a great deal of self control to idly stand by while you’re defending yourself. Any opponent who is seemingly more powerful than you can make Hiei fidgety. He’s ready to pounce on your attacker the second they lay a finger on you.
𓆩⟡𓆪 In fact, there have been times when Hiei just couldn’t help himself. Seeing you wounded is like an instant trigger. Anyone who causes your blood to spill is a dead man. The fight is over the minute he intervenes.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Hiei has to remind himself how he would feel if someone tried to “protect” him during a battle. With an ego his size, he would surely be offended by such heroics. With these thoughts in mind, he can hold himself back…for the most part.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Unless you explicitly ask for help or find yourself in a deadly situation, Hiei stays put. Will it be easy? Not at all. Will he respect your autonomy as a fighter? Absolutely.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Alternatively, if you aren’t great at defending yourself, Hiei won’t hesitate to protect you.
𓆩⟡𓆪 He might consider standing by if the aggressor was a small fry, but honestly, that’s a risk he’s not comfortable with taking. Protecting you is a like a reflex. He doesn’t think about it, he just does it. Also, if you were to get hurt while under his care, he would blame himself.
𓆩⟡𓆪 But perhaps you want to fight but don’t have the skills to do so. Hiei would have to compromise and teach you a few self-defense skills. Being totally defenseless is not good considering the life he lives. There are enemies at every corner, so knowing how to throw a punch could really come in handy.
𓆩⟡𓆪 On a more positive note, Hiei loves watching you kick ass. It fills him with immense pride. He’s like a proud dad cheering on the sidelines, except he just smirks and praises your every move. If you were to do something as simple as dodging a blast, he’s all like “It takes a true strategist to avoid an attack like that. How clever.” (Team Urameshi is sooo fed up)
𓆩⟡𓆪 But once everything is over and you’re glowing with victory, Hiei is relieved, and mildly turned on— so beware.
𓆩⟡𓆪 When the others aren’t around he challenges you to a harmless sparing match. Whoever pins the other person down first is the winner. You can imagine how that ends… ;)
✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻
extra:
Sometimes, Hiei likes to give you a celebratory kiss after an intense fight.

On The Ice - Hiei X Female Reader
Title: On The Ice
Hiei X Female Reader
Additional Characters: Kurama, Kuwabara, Yusuke, Botan, Keiko, Reader's parents (Mentioned), Announcer, and Reader's coach (Mentioned)
WC: 3,549
Warnings: Mentions of 'mates' briefly, italics, Hiei being himself, ice skater Reader, professional ice skating, very brief mentions of scars, Reader wears leotard with skirt, an attempt at describing a skating routine, crying (not bad), teasing, banter, mini angst, and fluff
You were nervous. Your competition was tomorrow and not only were you nervous about competing, but also because you really wanted your boyfriend to come.
Well, Hiei didn't really enjoy the term “boyfriend”, it was too human to him. On the very rare occasion that he did refer to you, if it wasn’t just your name, he would call you his “mate.” And everytime he did so, it always made your cheeks flush. For some reason the term “mate” seemed more permanent than “boyfriend” did.
And it kind of was, from what Kurama had explained. Like birds, demons kept the same mate for life. The thought still made your heart race, that Hiei - aloof, cynical, and “I hate humans” Hiei - was your mate. He chose you. A human. You. You were his, and he was yours. And that fact always made you smile.
So, why were you so nervous to ask your one-of-a-kind demon boyfriend-mate to come to your competition? Well, again, very simple really. Even though he was dating you - “courting” for him - he still hated most, if not all, human-related things.
And you concluded that he just might say ‘no’ to going to your competition. It was a possibility. On top of that, you were competing in front of a lot of people, and, again, Hiei hated people. Like yourself, he disliked crowded places. More so humans in those crowded places for him. So, it was only natural for you to assume that Hiei would not want to go. He hadn’t ever come before, so…
You were an ice skater. You have skated since you were very little. Your parents actually ran an ice rink when you were a kid, up until you were a senior in high school. It was something you were born in, grew up in, and loved tremendously. As cliche as it sounded, it was your life.
You skated at any time you could, when you weren't eating, sleeping, doing anything, you were at the rink. You practiced and practiced until your parents signed you up for competitions. And dare say, you were good. Really good. You won multiple times, earning medals and trophies that littered your shelf growing up.
But this competition was different, you could just feel it in your bones. And you really wanted him to come see you and watch you skate along the ice. It might have been wishful or hopeful thinking but you wished and hoped that Hiei would be proud of you, maybe compliment you. But Hiei was Hiei. And over the years of knowing him, befriending him, loving him, you knew that was not entirely in his character to do so. And you didn't mind. No, not one bit. You loved Hiei so much. Him just being there, would make your whole week, maybe even month. Oh, who were you kidding? It’d make your whole year.
But, there was one other problem. You hadn't seen Hiei in about a week. Well, seven days, ten hours, fifteen minutes, and three seconds, but who was really counting? It was lonely without him around. It was so quiet. Well, it was almost always quiet, but more so. Yeah, Yusuke, Kurama, Kuwabara, Keiko, and mostly Botan would visit occasionally, but it was like there was this gaping hole when Hiei was away. He took your heart with him.
You didn't mind, he was doing his job. Protecting people by guarding the border. But you missed him. A lot. You just wanted to hold him, run your fingers through his surprisingly soft hair, and just be close to him. It scared you sometimes how much you loved him.
The scar on your arm reminded you of that. You shouldn’t have tried to protect him from a demon’s claws when he could take care of himself. But that was a story for another day…
Turning the key into the lock, you opened your door before tossing the keys on the kitchen counter. Toeing off your shoes, you started humming a song that was on the radio, work was a bit rough so you had planned to take a shower before making something quick to eat and going to bed.
“You're late.”
You snapped your head up, eyes widening before your frown turned into a smile instantly. Hiei sat on your windowsill seat, staring out at the world, as he usually did. He didn't bother to turn his head to look at you. “You're home.” You quickly walked over, half of you overjoyed in seeing him, your heart racing and a feeling of giddiness filling you, the other half hoping your mind just wasn't playing games.
Hiei finally looked at you as you sat down on the windowsill seat in front of him, his crimson eyes staring at you with disinterest, slight irritation - probably at how bit and bright your smile was - and a little something that you registered as deep affection throughout your relationship.
After a moment, he ‘tch’ed, before staring back out at the window. He didn't say anything more, so you reached out, your hand laying on top of his. Yes, he was real, he was there. He didn't bother to turn his head.
You scooted a smidge closer, your smile softening at your stared at the side of his face, which was illuminated beautifully by the setting sun. Handsome, beautiful, gorgeous, pretty - you wished that you could tell him more, and you did, but his reply was always the same. A little ‘tch’. Nonetheless, you never missed the faint pink of his cheeks afterwards.
“Stop staring, idiot.” Hiei muttered, irritated, as always.
“I can't, it is simply impossible.” You muttered right back, almost dreamily as you tilted your head. “You are far too pretty.” He scoffed at your words, the ‘tch’ leaving his lips as his frown deepened. Called it. You glanced down at your hand on his, your thumb brushing along his knuckles, “How was patrol?”
“Uneventful.” He answered, before his eyes finally landed on you once more, “You were late.” He repeated, making you nod slightly. You wondered how long he had been sitting there, waiting for you.
“Yeah, my boss wanted me to stay later for some extra paperwork. I'm sorry.” You muttered, raising your knees up to your chest, mimicking him. “I wasn't expecting you to be home. You're usually gone for… For much longer.” You spoke, your words trialing off slightly, unable to hide much of your sadness or disappointment.
Again, he stared, for a bit longer before he answered, “It is foolish of you to assume that I wouldn't return.”
You nodded, biting your bottom lip. His words were reassuring, even when he said them with such annoyance. You knew what he truly meant. He would always come back to you.
“I'm very happy you're home, Hiei.” You looked back at your joined hands, “I was hoping to see you before tomorrow. I was- I was wanting to ask you something. A favor of sorts.” You dared to look up at him, only to see his usual expression with hints of curiosity swirling in his eyes.
“What is it?” He finally asked, and you grinned nervously.
“Well, I was wondering if you would come to my competition tomorrow.” You managed to say, unable to look at him as you continued, “You know I skate, and I have a competition tomorrow afternoon at the center and I was hoping you'd be there…” You trailed off, the longer he stayed silent, the more nervous you became. “You don't have to cheer me on or anything. Just, you know, you being there would be amazing.”
“Hn.” He hummed shortly, and you looked up, meeting his gaze once more.
“You don't have to go if you don't want to.” You began to panic, “I mean, I'll understand if you might be busy. Being a demon and all, demon-business, but I just thought I'd ask, uh…” Again, you trailed off, and Hiei stayed quiet, and you continued. “I'll, uh, make sure my booth is open for you if you do decide to come. There’s also the bleachers, but I doubt you’d want to be quashed beside our friends. No pressure.” You reluctantly slipped your hand from his, already missing his warmth as you stood, clearing your throat. "And I know I’ve already said this, but I’m happy you’re home, Hei." You said softly, giving him a smile, “It’s insane how quiet it is without you-” You turned to head to the kitchen, but before you could take a single step, a hand caught yours, stopping you in your tracks.
You barely had time to process the motion before Hiei tugged you toward him. His free hand cupped the back of your neck, and his lips captured yours. It was quick - brief, even - but the passion behind it was undeniable. When he finally pulled away, you were left standing there, breathless, your heart pounding, threatening to leap from your chest.
Hiei's gaze lingered on you for a moment, his expression unreadable, though a faint flush dusted his cheeks. He let go of your hand, his usual composure slipping back into place. Still dazed, a slow, radiant smile spread across your lips. “I missed you too.” You said, leaning down to press a chaste kiss to his warm cheek before you quickly turned and walked back toward the kitchen, the warmth from the kiss still lingering on your lips as you tried to focus on dinner.
Behind you, Hiei sat rooted in place, his gaze following you, a low, nearly imperceptible sigh leaving him before he turned to look back out the window.
~~~
The day of your competition was here. By morning, when you awoke, Hiei was gone. However, his space in bed was still warm from where he laid. You bit back the disappointment, and only hoped that he would come watch you skate. If he did come, it would be his first time seeing you skate, as said before. And the mere thought of that fact not only made you excited but also made you all the more nervous if you messed up on your routine.
The day went on like any other, with the addition of getting ready for the competition. Before you knew it, you had fed yourself, got ready, dressed, and were ready to leave. The center where the competition was going to be held was a thirty minute or so drive away, so it wasn't too bad. But once you arrived, and greeted your manager, who was also your mother’s best friend, who also managed a couple of skaters that had been in the Olympics, you made your way to the changing rooms.
Your outfit was perfect.
The dress was a stunning dark red that faded smoothly into black, creating a dramatic ombré effect. One sleeve extended gracefully down one arm while the other was sheer, emphasizing the asymmetrical design. Sparkling rhinestones decorated the high neckline and chest, sparkling with every turn. The fitted bodice highlighted your body, and the skirt was adorned with a tapered fringe.
It didn't surprise you that the moment you saw it, it reminded you of Hiei. The dark red of his eyes, and the black of his hair and usual attire. You really hoped he'd see you in it.
Sitting in your booth with your manager, your leg shook from anticipation. You watched each dancer skate, waiting for your turn. You surveyed the stands, your nervous smile widening as you spotted your friends. They were all wearing matching shirts of your face, funnily enough. And once Botan noticed you, she smiled brightly, waving, and soon enough all of them were waving. You chuckled, waving right back. Happy to have them there to support you. However, you noticed Hiei was not with them. You would let that damper your performance though. Soon enough, it was going to be your turn.
“Next up on the ice is Y/N L/N.” The announcer spoke as you skated out onto the ice, making a few circles as you took deep breaths and steadied yourself on the ice.
“Wooo! Yeah! Go, Y/N!” Yusuke yelled out from the stands.
“Yeah, you can do it!” Botan cheered, as Keiko cheered beside her.
Kuwabara yelled out his own cheer, cupping his hands around his mouth with Kurama clapping beside him.
“L/N has won many awards over the years, and has been named the best skater of her year, three years in a row! So, let's see if she can win another award tonight.”
You slid into your starting position, shutting your eyes. You tried to think about the ice against the blades of your skates, the soft chill in the air as you let out your deep breath as your song started.
Slowly, your hands rose, tracing the line of your neck before gently brushing against your cheek. You tilted your head upward, arms swirling gracefully toward the sky, each movement in sync with the soft, beginning melody of the violin.
Pushing off with smooth precision, you began to glide, each motion effortless. The sound of your skates cutting through the ice was the only thing that filled your ears as you lost yourself in the rhythm. The weight of your worries melted away with each powerful stroke, leaving you feeling light and free.
Each step, each turn, was instinctive. You spun lightly into a layback, your arms held high above you. You perfectly arched your back as you held the position, spinning in multiple tight, fast circles. As the violins and electric guitar grew in intensity, you picked up speed, the world around you blurring as you slid effortlessly across the ice.
You smoothly transitioned into a one-handed cartwheel, your hand brushing the ice before you landed effortlessly. The crowd cheered as you quickly flowed into a triple toe loop, followed by a series of spins and axles. With each move, you executed the tricks you had perfected over the years, your movements fluid and precise.
It was obvious to everyone that you were born to skate.
And from the center’s rink entrance, a dark figure watched. Unbeknownst to you and others.
As the song came to an end, you slipped into a scratch spin, spinning before slowly to a stop gracefully, your hands rising into the sky. Your chest heaving as you breathed heavily as the crowds cheered, their applause echoing throughout. You couldn't stop the smile on your face as you did a little spin and bowed.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Y/N L/N! With the high-score of-” The announcer spoke over the speakers as you bowed once more, eyes catching your friends as you waved, slowly gliding off the ice.
Letting out a happy sigh, you left the rink, making your way to your booth when you saw a flicker of something in your peripheral vision. You paused, turning your head, and that's when you saw him.
Standing off to the side, Hiei stared at you, his hands in his pockets. You didn't waste anymore time, running over to him and crashing into his arms; of course, he didn't budge, but his hands did leave his pockets to wrap around you, steadying you.
Pulling back slightly, you felt tears prickle at the corners of your eyes. “Hiei,” You said softly, “You came.”
“Tch,” He scoffed, glancing away from you, acting all disinterested, meanwhile his grip around you tightened.
You smiled at the sound, "I wasn't sure you'd make it," You whispered, still holding onto him tightly.
"Don't get too sentimental," He spoke in the same tone, looking back at you. You smiled softly, squeezing him tighter as you pulled him in for another hug. "You did well," He added, though his tone was far from enthusiastic. “It was… Breathtaking.”
Your smile softened at the rare compliment, and you nuzzled your face into the crook of his neck, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath your cheek. “Thank you…” You whispered.
Hiei wouldn’t admit it out loud, but as he stood there with you, he couldn’t help but think about the way you moved across the ice - graceful, yet powerful. Maybe you weren’t all that weak. You moved like silk. He had watched every twist, every jump, every flawless motion, and though he’d never say it, he was proud.
Suddenly, he heard a faint sniffle. He turned his head slightly, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at you, your head still nestled against his neck. "Why are you crying?" He asked, his tone almost demanding an explanation.
You looked up, blinking back the tears, and smiled. "I'm just really happy," You murmured, your cheeks flushing as you looked away bashfully.
Hiei’s gaze softened just slightly as he reached out, his hand gently lifting your chin, forcing your eyes to meet his. “Hn." He tilted his head, studying you for a brief moment before his lips curled into a small, almost amused smirk. "Pathetic."
Before you could respond, Hiei’s lips pressed against yours. The kiss was sharp at first, unexpected and demanding, as if he was trying to convey everything he refused to say in words. His hand, still holding your chin, tilted your face as he deepened the kiss, pulling you closer. You simply melted into the kiss, your hands slipping into his hair at the nape of his neck.
When he pulled away, just enough to let your lips part, his eyes stared into yours, searching once more. You blinked at him, pleasantly surprised before you began to giggle, biting your bottom lip to keep most of the giggles in. “You're such a softie.” You giggled out, a hand leaving his hair to cover your mouth as Hiei rolled his eyes.
“You’re lucky I’m even doing this,” He didn't back away, though. He stayed close, his breath still warm against your skin.
“I am.” You muttered, your giggling subsiding as you gazed at him, admiring, heart full. “I'm very lucky.”
Understanding the hidden meaning behind your words, Hiei looked away, cheeks once more turning a faint shade of pink. He thought he was lucky too.
"Y/N! Didn't you hear?" Keiko exclaimed, her voice full of excitement as she sprinted over to you and Hiei.
Reluctantly, you pulled away from Hiei, feeling the warmth of his presence slip away as he stuffed one of his hands back into his pockets, the other around your waist, casting his eyes to the side. Reverting back to being all stoic.
Your eyebrows furrowed, "What? What happened, Keiko?"
Keiko grabbed one of your hands, and Botan quickly took the other. Their grins were so wide, you thought they might burst. Botan was practically bouncing on her heels, her excitement impossible to contain. "You won!" She squealed, her voice high-pitched with joy.
Your eyes widened in disbelief. "What? I- I won?" You asked, your voice tinged with shock. Both girls nodded vigorously, their smiles growing even larger, if that was even possible.
"You were amazing out there!" Botan added, nearly bouncing off the ground. "I could hardly believe my eyes! You nailed every move!"
Still processing, you felt a burst of joy and disbelief fill you. "I... I won," You repeated, a stunned smile creeping onto your face.
Hiei watched the scene quietly, his expression unreadable. You glanced at him, and for a fleeting moment, his lips twitched - just barely, but it was enough to see.
Kuwabara threw his hands up in the air, “I knew you had it in you!” His boisterous voice was loud as he patted you on the back with a bit too much enthusiasm, nearly knocking the wind out of you. “You were amazing!”
Kurama, ever the calm one, smiled warmly at you. "You truly showed your skill, Y/N," He said softly, "It was beautiful to watch."
Yusuke, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but smirk at the whole situation. His eyes flickered to Hiei, “Well, well, Hiei… Wasn’t she just amazing out there?” His voice dripped with mock sweetness, a mischievous glint in his eye. “Bet you’re just bursting with pride, huh?”
Hiei’s eyes narrowed, shooting Yusuke a sharp glare; his grip around your waist tightening ever-so-slightly. “Tch. Don’t be ridiculous,” He muttered, clearly trying to brush off the comment.
Yusuke snorted, clearly entertained by Hiei's irritation. Kuwabara joined in, laughing loudly. “Haha! Yeah, Hiei, admit it, you were watching every second of it! You can’t tell me you weren’t impressed!”
Hiei scoffed, gently squeezing you where his hand rested as a ‘goodbye’ before walking off, without another word. You rolled your eyes, amused by their usual antics, but couldn't help but smile as you watched him walk away.
Turning your attention back to Yusuke, he gave you an easy grin. "Shouldn’t you go grab your award?”
A sudden realization hit you, and you gasped, “Oh! My award! The scholarship!” Your eyes widen with shock. Before anyone could respond, you spun around and sprinted off, calling over your shoulder, “I’ll be right back!”
Yusuke chuckled, his voice trailing behind you. "Don’t trip, okay!?" He shouted after you.
Hiei glanced back in your direction for a split second, his gaze softening as he watched you run around the corner, before he turned away and continued walking, his lips curling up into the smallest of grins.
For @yyh-revival Valentine's Prompt list, this is for #5, "love on the battlefield."
Title: Love on the Battlefield
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/63025714
Rating: Explicit
Pairing: Kurama and Hiei
Summary: A quick one-shot between Hiei and Kurama, having vanquished their foes, where Hiei realizes he's in love.
Below cut:
His blood was pumping, his ears were ringing, his mouth was wet with saliva. Among the battlefield strewn about were the corpses of countless demons; enemies they’ve vanquished, a discarded pile of flesh. A few feet from him stood among the fallen a figure of beauty and grace that Hiei could barely believe was his. A sharp, deadly whip of thorns flew through the air, slicing an enemy that came too close to the dangerous redhead. The fabric of Kurama’s green tunic flowed through the air as he spun about, his hair doing the same — an enticing dance that showed the demon’s agility and prowess.
Another enemy rushed at Hiei, a heavy club raised in the air, as if it was a threat meant to squish Hiei’s head into nothing. Instead, the demon became nothing as Hiei’s sword slashed through the attacker’s flesh, opening the throat of the creature and pouring forth a waterfall of blood. Hiei stood and bathed in it, feeling the rapidly cooling liquid coat his torso and neck, splatters making their way onto his dirty face. The blood’s smell only excited Hiei more, causing his nostrils to flare, his lips to curl up into a fanged grin.
He turned to Kurama and watched the final foe on this battlefield fall to a murderous plant that swallowed the creature whole. Kurama’s back was turned, eyes still on the plant that devoured his enemy, as if watching to make sure it did not come back from its fate. Hiei wasted no time; he grabbed Kurama by the waist, the redhead whipping around, his hair slapping Hiei in the face. Kurama’s hands reached up to grip at Hiei’s shoulders as Hiei crashed their bodies together.
“Hiei, there may still be—“
Hiei ignored him. He yanked on the gorgeous red hair to bring Kurama’s head down to his level and pressed a blistering kiss against the redhead’s lips. Their mouths pressed so tightly together that Hiei was sure their lips would be bruised. He hoped they would be, in fact. He hoped his fangs would pierce and deliver more of the delicious red liquid straight into his mouth. He made that wish a reality and held onto Kurama tightly as his partner flinched, his body attempting to move away in the brief moment of pain. But Hiei held him still, and he savored the few precious drops of blood that fell from Kurama’s lip.
The redhead relaxed, his hands smoothing over Hiei’s shoulders where before they gripped, and his tense body loosened into a pliable form that Hiei could easily manipulate down onto the ground, to lie among the dirty and stinking corpses of their vanquished foes. Kurama’s body settled in a space between a broken arm and a crooked spine, his head right below a mess of innards that Hiei had ripped out from another demon, his feet right above where a bloodied club lay. As Hiei descended upon his lover, they were walled in by the piles of corpses, their dark blood mingling with the two still living bodies on this bloodied battlefield.
“This is rather unhygienic,” Kurama commented, a smile on his face. He looked relatively at ease considering he laid in the middle of a graveyard.
“You can bathe after,” Hiei replied, his hands already working on untying Kurama’s belt. Kurama’s hands idly stroked along his own chest, smoothing the dirty fabric of his tunic, as his eyes wandered over the red-pink sky above them.
“There was a stream nearby,” Kurama stated, his tone faraway and dreamy, as if lost in deep thought. “A bath after all this mess would be lovely, though I confess I would prefer one in warmth and with decent soap.”
Hiei’s brows drew down over his eyes, his forehead growing tight with frustration as he undid the belt and ripped it off, jostling Kurama’s body in the movement. “I’ll heat the water. Now shut up.”
Kurama’s eyes snapped to Hiei and he grinned. His hands were still idle, and Hiei’s frustration was mounting. He needed skin to skin, needed release, needed to feel. But Kurama was content to simply lie there like one of the corpses. He needed to be punished for it.
Kurama’s mouth opened to speak, to retort with something clever, when Hiei’s hand shot up to grip it shut. Hiei placed a knee on either side of Kurama’s hips, holding him down with one hand upon his mouth and the other around his neck.
“You’re annoying,” he said, glaring down at his lover as he leaned down over him. “Always yapping… Never helping me with what I need you to do. You’re lucky I don’t kill you.”
Kurama’s eyes were patient, curious, and the slightest hint of arousal finally, finally made it into the redhead’s gaze. Kurama seemed content to remain where he was, not struggling one bit to free himself of Hiei’s grip.
Hiei squeezed the hand around Kurama’s throat tighter, and gulped with lust at seeing Kurama’s eyes close, his soft, muffled moan that followed the action serving to urge Hiei on further. He squeezed again, tighter, then let go, watching the momentary confusion in Kurama’s eyes as Hiei sat up, his ass against Kurama’s hips. He ground down upon him, then released the hand from Kurama’s mouth.
“You enjoy being abused, don’t you?”
Kurama merely stared, his mouth slightly ajar, his white teeth glimmering in the pale light of the demon sun.
“Being choked, manhandled; you just want to lie there and let me abuse you. Are you so tired of being in control that you’re submitting to me now?” The excitement was apparent in Hiei’s voice and even more so in his physical form as he pressed down against Kurama harder. Another soft moan escaped the redhead’s lips, his eyes closing for a brief moment, before they reopened and focused on Hiei’s.
“Now who is talking too much?”
The tease produced a toothy grin from Hiei, and he grabbed Kurama by the collar of his tunic and hoisted him up, forcing their lips together roughly. He continued to press his body down against Kurama until finally his partner raised his hands to grip at Hiei’s hips. The grip with which Kurama held him was bruising and Hiei adored every second of it. He hoped there would be bruises. He hoped they’d both walk away limping.
As they kissed, pressing tightly against each other, their mouths opening to allow their tongues to mingle, Kurama’s hands shifted around Hiei’s hips to his front, where a red sash kept his pants up and about his waist. Kurama’s agile hands quickly made work of the knot, and before long Hiei felt familiar hands slip into his pants. He rose up onto his knees, tilting his head down to not break the kiss, as Kurama slid the fabric down Hiei’s legs.
Eventually Hiei did break the kiss, standing, and let the pants fall to the ground. Then he lifted his tattered black shirt over his head and let it drop, too, beside the pants.
Kurama was still seated among the corpses, though Hiei noted now that he had been cheated; Kurama was truly sitting upon a pile of leaves and vines, likely grown in the last moments before Hiei had forced his lover upon their grim lovebed. But he was too aroused to care about the cheat, and only focused on the ground for the moment as Kurama’s hips lifted off of it to push his own pants down his thighs. Hiei reached down to grab the white pants at the hems of Kurama’s ankles and yank them, pulling the fabric forcibly off of Kurama’s body in a rough movement that was sure to leave tears in the fabric. Though Hiei was rather sure they’d survive, as pants seemed to always be made from tougher fabric than tops.
Pantsless and giving Hiei the slyest smile, Kurama laid back down among the leaves and vines and dead bodies. The bruising on his legs was evident, along with cuts and scrapes gained during the fight. Hiei was sure he had plenty of those on himself as well, and on clear display now that he stood before Kurama naked. He wanted to see more, though; more of the evidence of their fight, the evidence of their survival. Never had Hiei thought to rely on others in his youth, the fear clear in his heart that should he ever find one who would not betray him, he still had to contend with their possible death. But Kurama was powerful. He was clever. He would bleed and bruise and scream out in pain, but each fight he would walk away the victor. Painted red in blood, Kurama would find a way to cut through a thousand demons to be at Hiei’s side.
And Hiei never, not in this life nor any other, could have imagined to be so incredibly lucky.
Kurama opened his arms, a clear invitation, his smile welcoming. Had he sensed Hiei’s thoughts? Hiei shook his head, clearing himself of those pesky feelings. Only the sensations of body against body belonged in his mind now, and so he dove into this lover’s embrace.
They kissed, teeth scraping along lips, saliva dripping down chins, moans and groans escaping the both of them until they were panting against each other. Hiei fished among the green fabric of Kurama’s tunic to find his aroused member and gave it a stroke, loving the way the organ felt hot and hard in his grip. It seemed to grow harder still, and if it weren’t for Hiei’s mouth against Kurama’s, he was sure the redhead would be moaning and groaning and begging so sweetly for more.
Kurama quickly returned the favor, finding Hiei’s cock easily between their bodies. Hiei shifted, bringing their two arousals together and directing Kurama’s hand to cover both. The two hands stroked along the two cocks in rushed, fervent motions. Hiei’s body pressed tighter against Kurama’s, the force of gravity making him heavy and solid. Kurama’s body seemed to melt and mold against Hiei’s, a perfect receptacle. It was difficult to move their hands, trapped as they were between their bodies, but the satisfaction of crushing his lover was too great to entirely give it up. So instead Hiei leaned a little to his side, allowing his weight to still pin Kurama to the ground while allowing for a better grip on their collective penises, making the stroking easier.
Heavy pants filled the air as the two separated from their kiss. A string of saliva still held them together as Hiei’s body heated up to an impossible degree. He could see his own sweat drip and drop onto Kurama’s skin. He could feel the pressure build within his groin. His cheeks felt hot, his chest felt tight, and the delicious tingling in his balls told him that he would soon have his release. Judging by the red flush upon Kurama’s cheeks, he wasn’t far off, either.
Hiei reached up to grip at Kurama’s hair, yanking the redhead forward for another, slower, gentler kiss. Their grip on their cocks was as hard as a vice, their speed at which they pumped themselves was nearly inhumane. But the kiss was slow, sensual, warm, and so pliant. Kurama’s sweet moans and his relaxed expression was heavenly, and Hiei kept stealing glances between breaths at his lover’s face to see that look on him again.
The release was sudden. Hiei groaned, staring at Kurama’s serene face, his closed eyes, his parted lips where a sheen of saliva shone upon his skin. The warm flush to his cheeks, the way his hair was splattered and sticking to Kurama’s sweaty and bloodied forehead. All of it, all at once, was too much, though Hiei would never admit that it was Kurama’s gentle expression and the pleasure and love he saw within it that sent him over the edge.
Kurama followed soon after, and Hiei felt the warm fluid wash over his hand as he gripped them both tightly. Kurama’s moan was soft, barely audible, but the way in which his body absolutely collapsed afterward was unmistakable pleasure. He sank into the ground, going completely limp, his head rolling back, his hand slacking until it slid off their joined members.
Hiei leaned in closer, pressing a kiss against Kurama’s cheek, then down against his jaw.
They stayed for a moment like that, Kurama’s near boneless body serving as a comfortable bed for Hiei, where he laid atop him, simply feeling Kurama’s chest rise and fall. After a long moment of simply that, Kurama’s body regained some tension, and his muscles shifted beneath that bruised skin so that the redhead could push himself to sit, forcing Hiei upright as well.
The moment had passed, and Hiei felt himself grow disappointed and sad at the loss of it. But Kurama’s bright smile brought the leaping in his heart back to full force, and Hiei tried his hardest to not smile back as Kurama leaned down to press a kiss into Hiei’s hair.
“Let us go find that stream. You promised me warm water.”
Hiei hummed in response, staying still as Kurama’s hands caressed over his hair.
Yes, perhaps this would work. Perhaps, Hiei thought, the two of them could last.
So it turns out I ship Kurahi too but I didn't like Kurama being sweet and nice and Hiei being soft for him. I prefer monster Kurama who pretends to be human but killed most that was considered an enemy. Surviving Kurama's monstrosity gets Hiei horny.
#Kurahi#Yu Yu Hakusho#YYH#yyh Kurama#yyh Hiei#I only figured this out because I wrote an OT4 fanfic but before that I had no idea how to write them because I wasn't into a fluff dynamic
I remember seeing some art for a genderfluid Kuwabara on here, and you mentioned thinking up a fanfic of that. I really loved that idea, so since you’re taking requests, would you still want to write that, if it’s no trouble?
I'm actually still writing that fic! I've got about a dozen chapters written, but it's been slow going. A lot of research, second-guessing, things of that nature. Since I am writing that fic I'll share part of it with you. Here is a couple pages from the Genderfluid Kuwabara story. The working title is: Fluid, Like Friendship.
Hiei, oddly enough, has seen Kuwabara in lipstick three times now.
This third time, outside a convenience store, with Kuwabara a little tipsy, and leaning down to apply the cheap product to his lips via the car’s side mirror, seems somehow significant.
Really significant.
The first time Hiei had seen it, Kuwabara was asleep, and fifteen. Maybe fourteen. Hiei wasn’t sure about either Kuwabara or Yusuke’s ages during the dark tournament.
Hiei was still hiding his injured hand, and everyone was quietly stewing over the wins and losses in their prospective matches. Hiei had wandered back into his shared hotel room, and spotted Shizuru, Kuwabara’s apparent elder sister. She was sitting on a bed, leaned over a hulking body, who Hiei assumed was Kuwabara.
Moved by curiosity, he came to see what she was doing.
To his shock and sudden amusement, she was putting a bright pink lipstick on her sleeping brother’s face. The lipstick was being applied liberally, but smoothly. It did not suit his pale skin or copper hair… too… clashing. Too bright.
“The colors don’t suit him,” Hiei remarked.
Shizuru, to her credit, does not jump or flinch. She finished with the lipstick and then pulled out a green powder, which she applied to his eyes. “That’s not the point,” she added once one of his eyelids is dark green… which is actually nice against his skin.
“...What is the point?” Hiei asked.
“Payback for running off to this stupid thing, and not telling me!” Shizuru grumped.
And then she looked at Hiei.
She looked at him for a long time, and Hiei looked back. This was Kuwabara’s sister, he had heard her name mentioned, and idly Yusuke had named her and pointed her out. He'd not thought much about her, but now they were looking at each other, and he was forced to see her.
She did not look much like Kuwabara… and yet she does. Her hair is more brown than auburn, but there is a touch of softer red hues there. She is tall, taller than Kuwabara, and while female her shoulders are broad. They have a similar eye shape, but after that, the similarities die off. There’s someone else in her genetic makeup, someone else that kept her apart from her brother.
“So you’re Hiei?” Shizuru mused, and there was a sad little lilt there, like she knew something.
Hiei frowns as his own senses tell him that she does.
She looked away and then instructed, “Look after him.”
“Ask the Detective to do that,” Hiei snorted.
Shizuru laughed, “These words are for later. Not for the tournament, and not for what comes after. You'll remember these words years from now. You’ll get it…” She finished Kuwabara’s eyes, and pulled out what looked like a thin black pen. “Also… wait for fifteen minutes. You’ll get to enjoy a show.”
Hiei walked away from Shizuru and Kuwabara, and took his spot by the window and loitered around for fifteen minutes… just to see what would happen.
Shizuru left ten minutes in.
At the end of minute 14, Kuwabara wakes up, and sits up, yawning groggily. At minute 15, Yusuke, Kurama, Botan, and Genkai walk in the room. Yusuke sees Kuwabara’s face and explodes with laughter, immediately giving Kuwabara shit. The room gets loud, Kuwabara screams and screeches and has no idea what is going on. Botan and Yusuke are laughing and pointing like children, and Kuwabara gets up from his bed, and chases them around the room.
…It is all amusing to watch, and Hiei has to hide a smile.
He doesn’t really understand whats so embarrassing about wearing makeup for Kuwabara, but humans wear it to look pretty instead of to make war, or send a message. So he assumes its another difference between humans and demons he does not understand.
When the room settles down, Kuwabara goes to clean his face. He looks at his eyes the longest. The green shade is the only nice part about the makeover his sister gave him. It looks nice, it suits him. It reveals the blue hidden in the dark ring of his eyes. Hiei thought it looked good on him, and judging by Kuwabara's hesitance, Kuwabara seemed to think so too.
Kuwabara wiped the makeup away, and Hiei eventually forgets this moment, until he sees Kuwabara in lipstick for the third time.
CW: mild angst mostly comfort fluff
A/N: writing this on my phone so have to put title in the stupid post...
Digging His Grave- hiei x reader
---
Hiei didn't think it was possible to feel so vulnerable. To feel like maybe he will die without the threat of fist in his face or a sword at his throat. But you always surprise him.
You take from him, pieces he never agreed to give, and you never return them. Instead, they stay in your soft, human hands, and soon enough, he feels like he's crumbling. Like those fingers of yours are digging his grave right before his eyes. Like with just the right brush of your skin against his, he will fall backward into the hole waiting to swallow him up.
He is an arrogant man, and could give any demon's ego a run for the money. But with you standing in front of him, holding those pieces of his soul, of his heart, he is certain he is humbled. A weak, pathetic mortal is the one who will be his undoing. Because he knows when he loses you, and he is certain he will one day, he will eagerly chase his own death for the first time in his life.
His arms find your waist in the dark of the night and allows himself to relax, surrounded by your familiar scent. For now, despite how tenuous your life is, he will let himself love you in the only way he knows how.
Hiei had gone further than she expected. He waited for her in a clearing, surrounded by trees on all sides. The sky had darkened, casting a gloomy haze on their surroundings. It was private; far enough away from the camp that anything they said would not be overheard. Not that she expected much conversation.
He had just finished wrapping his hands. Without looking up, he tossed the roll of tape at her. She caught it with the tips of her fingers.
"Use this," he instructed. "It will protect your fists."
She did so clumsily, unsure of the proper technique. As she flexed her fingers, adjusting to the limited mobility, he came to stand directly in front of her. His scent was reminiscent of the deepest part of the woods - those dense tangles where even the sun could not reach. Had he always smelled this way?
"Hit me, right here," he said, pointing to the middle of his hand.
She hesitated, trying to imagine how she could throw a punch when all she wanted to do was touch him. Hold him. To kiss him. Anything that would show him what he meant to her. But she could not. Would not.
"Go on. As hard as you can."
Brave face, Airi. She wound up with her eyes targeted on his hand, throwing all of her weight into her fist. It landed, and the shock of it radiated up her arm.
"If you throw a punch like that, you'll break your thumb, or worse."
He grabbed her hand, unwrapping her fingers and reforming them into a proper fist. He moved behind her and adjusted her shoulders, then placed his hands on her hips, pushing one forward and pulling the other back towards his body. Electricity crackled in the space between them.
"This is a basic stance," he said, coming back around to face her. "Memorize what it feels like."
They spent the rest of the morning this way, with short bursts of instruction followed by long bouts of practicing. Hiei spoke of nothing that did not relate to the training, and she did not speak at all. Being with him this way was devastating. Since they'd first met, she'd been carefully crafting the foundation of their friendship, one stone at a time. It appeared a single moment knocked them all down.
The sun broke out in the late afternoon, and she turned her face up to feel the warm rays. Her whole body ached. Hiei's physical drills were even more exhausting than his mental ones, and his conditioning was unbelievable. They'd spent hours punching, kicking, blocking, and parrying, yet he did not seem any less energized than he had that morning.
The fatigue settling into her muscles slowed her reaction time, and she failed to block a brutal attack. His fist landed square on her shoulder, the jolt of it drawing a loud yelp from her. Immediately he stopped to check on her.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," she said, gripping her arm and wishing he'd let it go.
His hand raised to push aside the collar of her shirt. She tore her arm away from him.
"What is it?"
All she could do was shake her head. He reached out for her again, this time more hesitantly.
Maybe it's time.
She flinched as his fingers brushed her collarbone, second-guessing her decision. Her eyes shut, unable to watch herself be this vulnerable.
"Airi..."
Her name on his lips made her shiver. It was the first time she'd heard it.
She felt the air on her bare skin as he exposed more of her shoulder. His touch, like a whisper, swept over the crests and valleys of her scars. When she found the strength to open her eyes, she saw his jaw clenched, eyebrows furrowed into a dark "V".
"Are they everywhere?" he growled.
Nodding, she regretted showing him.
"Your shoulder is fine. We're done for the day."
Amazing commission by @hanase !!! I love seeing them in different styles and the emotion in this is just everything ♥️
Hiei sneaks in your bedroom window at night.
Sometimes you pretend not to notice the signs he’d stopped by. Something moved slightly from where you know you put it or a footprint because he didn’t realize his shoes were muddy. You’d curse him a little for never taking his shoes off, but you’d be a bit frightened if he actually did. After all, it’s Hiei. He’s a demon and any of your human customs, like simply removing your shoes at the door—or in his case, window—are foreign to him.
He’d never leave the window open or forget to draw the curtains back. Hiei was hell bent against you recognizing his affections. He’d never want to be seen as soft, as human, but you plague his mind more than he will admit. He’s busy in demon world, and isn’t too fond of the human world, but you bring him back every time.
At night, he’d sneak in through the window beside your bed. His feet poised on the window ledge, his eyes fixed on you, and the sweetest smile of which nobody has ever been lucky enough to see on his face. His heart beating so fast it honestly makes him sick. He hates how weak he gets around you. It only makes him dig his heels into the dirt more. He keeps you at arms length, but checks on you frequently. He likes to do so in person when he can, but more often than not, it’s with his jagan eye.
He won’t admit his feelings unless you just figure it out on your own. He doesn’t feel like he’s the person you want, or the person you need. He hates to see you too close to Kurama or someone else, but part of him feels like you deserve somebody better than him. And if he knows this, why can’t he give you up? Why is he waiting around?
It sickens him that he doesn’t even understand himself because of you. He’s quick to bite at you for simple things, as if being mean would keep you far from the truth. And since he can’t stand how he’s afraid of what you’ll think of him, he comes when you aren’t able to perceive him or his actions at all. You’re fast asleep, a few feet away, and, at least as he believes, unsuspecting to his presence.
But you know damn well he was there.
- Slow burn romance with Hiei
For a very long time, Hiei desperately tries to convince himself that he isn’t falling.
gender neutral. sfw. fluff. headcanons.
PART 2
✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻
𓆩⟡𓆪 Upon first meeting, Hiei barely pays you any attention. He's not the kind of guy who's charmed by looks, and the fact that you're human doesn't make him any fonder. Similar to when he met Yusuke and the others, it takes him time to warm up. He's moved by personality and character.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Once you pique his interest, he studies every detail about you. Your scent, your energy, the sound of your voice—everything. With just a glance, he can spot a small change in your appearance, such as a new accessory or a shift in your mood. He doesn't comment on these things; he simply keeps them tucked away in his mind. It's like he's building a little portfolio in his head. All while denying the fact that he’s interested in you.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Hiei tries to build up a mental wall every time you appear in his thoughts, but it’s useless. The mere mention of your name makes his ears perk up like a dog! One minute, he wants nothing to do with you, and the next, he’s waiting for the moment he can see you again.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Internally, Hiei is conflicted. He thinks romantic feelings are a silly human experience. But as time goes on, he can’t stay in denial for much longer. The dilemma is bothersome, yet he thinks about you frequently.
𓆩⟡𓆪 As he struggles to control his emotions, you’ll never know how he truly feels. It’s almost impossible to catch him looking in your direction. He’s a master at observation. As soon as you try to catch his gaze, he’s staring off in the distance, as if you aren’t even there.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Despite his silent yearning, Hiei will avoid you. If you try to start a conversation with him, he keeps it short and simple. It’s difficult to create a bond, especially when he won't even look at you. However, you don’t get the impression that he wants to push you away. He’s a man of few words but his body language reveals enough. Sometimes he may stand beside you, a little closer than usual, and your arms brush. As subtle as it may be, it’s electrifying.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Even though Hiei is unsure of his relationship with you, he takes pride in the possibility that you like him too. Facing his feelings would be a lot easier if you shared them. Whenever he noticed your eyes admiring him from afar, the tiniest smirk would curl on his lips. Feeding his ego is the best way to break his shell. One time you laughed at his witty insult towards Kuwabara and he was so freaking smug about it.
𓆩⟡𓆪 Eventually, he’ll start to initiate small talk, usually when there are fewer people around. He takes the time to reassure you about upcoming fights or advise you to stay cautious.
𓆩⟡𓆪 If you have the capability to defend yourself, he worries less, but if you’re an ordinary human, Hiei instinctively keeps you safe. For instance, if there’s a huge explosion that sends rocks flying everywhere, he quickly lifts you out of harm's way. Thanks to his speed, no one notices, but the two of you are left flustered afterward.
𓆩⟡𓆪 As feelings continue to build, it's hard for Hiei to maintain his indifference. When someone else openly flirts with you, he can only stand quietly while they make their move. It’s not his place to intervene. If he were to do something brash, he risks exposing himself. Hiei is practically boiling on the inside. If you were taken away from him, he’d lose his shit.
𓆩⟡𓆪 For the most part, things stay the same (like for months). Hiei stubbornly refuses to confess. He may have accepted his human-like desires, but that doesn't mean he's ready to take the next step. Dating is too foreign and unfamiliar. Plus, you'd be put at risk if word got out that he cared for you.
𓆩⟡𓆪 But maybe you find yourself in danger, or Hiei is putting his life on the line during a fight. Emotions will be high, and the idea of losing each other is enough to bring out the truth. Possibly?
✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻✧༺✧༻
hi there! dabbling into yyh rarepairs, have you ever considered hiei and botan becoming a thing? i’m kinda leaning to the idea. do you know any good fics or authors i should start with?
I don't ship them and have nothing to recommend. :)
But if it helps, I've seen that pairing pop up so many times in this fandom that I don't consider it a rarepair, and I don't think you'll have trouble finding material to read. Sorting the stories on FFnet by number of reviews yields half a dozen Hiei/Botan stories (plus a bunch of Kurama/Botan stories) on the first couple of pages. I haven't read any of them and can't attest to their quality.
TBH, I think Kurama/Botan and Hiei/Botan are some of the more basic ships in this fandom, and definitely some of the default non-yaoi and non-OC ships. If you want to read a hetero romance story in this fandom that doesn't include an OC, odds are Botan will be a part of the pairing. Such is the fate of being the only woman in the main cast who doesn't have a canonical boyfriend. You get shipped with everyone, all the time, no matter how much sense the pairing makes.
(No shade to people who ship Botan with anyone, btw. It's just that across multiple fandoms, there's a trend of shipping the only notable woman in the cast with every single male character even if the pairing is nonsensical or a poor fit. While some of these fics result in cool character studies, sometimes it's clear the author is just using the female character to avoid writing an OC, mischaracterizing her so badly to make her fit the assigned pairing that she becomes practically unrecognizable. At that point just write a damn OC instead of forcing pairings that don't make sense, jeez...)
The widespread, multi-fandom bias against OCs is a pet peeve of mine, in case you couldn't tell, and this fandom's use of Botan has unfortunately played into that annoyance from time to time. But I'm sure there are many amazing stories with that pairing out there! I just don't have any interest in reading them. Sorry, anon!
