Man, I really want to meet with the historian/linguist/whatever so I can ask all of these stuff, because I don’t know if there’s something in the wording that makes them so sure about why this must mean what it is.
It’s like... in the first place it really feels weird for Hideyoshi’s wife to have even had a conversation about marriage issues with Nobunaga. I can’t even begin to imagine how that’d look like while the wife is face to face with him.
Like, I imagine what makes this sound like it’s something about the wife is because there’s the part at the end that says “As a woman you shouldn’t be jealous (like a god?) and don’t carelessly say things” or something to that effect.
There’s also the passage that was interpreted to mean “you look more beautiful than the last time I saw you.” So the line following it, saying that “it’s outrageous for Toukichirou to say it’s not satisfactory” or whatever is interpreted to say that he’s not been overly happy with the wife.
I know it’s the Occam’s Razor principle to like, sometimes the Obvious meaning is what it means and there’s no need to be convoluted about it, but like... I do want to ask:
Is there something about the “beauty” line that specifically indicates that this is referring to a human being and not the beauty of objects? The part before this is talking about gifts, so I dunno, if the sentence actually doesn’t specify human, is it not possible for the sentence to actually be referring to how the gifts look better than the ones the Hashiba family sent Nobunaga before?
Is it possible that the line saying “You can’t find another [x] that is just as good for a second time” refers to an incredibly rare object? Or, hell, could it be that the entire passage is saying that “Toukichirou keeps saying he himself is not a good enough vassal, but I think he’s a wonderful vassal so he should stop beating himself up, that dumbass”?
Is it possible that “jealousy” refers to being jealous of other families for having offspring, and this really was actually a discussion requesting Nobunaga’s help to arrange for their family to adopt a child? Not because Nene is jealous of concubines?
Or, since it specifically says “as a woman”, could it be that Nene is complaining that Hideyoshi is constantly out and about doing “things that only men can do”? Like war or politics or that sort and she's protesting to Nobunaga, the liege lord who is giving the orders? Like, I dunno, maybe it’s something to the effect of, “my husband hasn’t been home in 3 years, STOP CONSTANTLY SENDING HIM TO WAR”.
There’s been examples of interpretations of old texts being fucked up, but people just never bothered to re-examine the text until decades later. There’s this letter that was originally thought to say something about a pink hawk in a circa 1970s analysis, but a recent re-analysis from like 2020 or so says that nah, that just says a “young hawk”, and the old researcher had misread the text.

Nene:
1. While they pull off the Hideyoshi infidelity stuff as a joke, he doesn’t cheat on her in game canon, which makes her yandere persona even funnier. I remember a conversation in Empires 2 between Nene and Hideyoshi that she said she was going to break his arms and legs if he went after another woman, then in the Orochi series, Nene chases him throughout Orochi World so that he wouldn’t flirt with the goddesses or the DW cast. That being said, Nene’s a nice lady, I think her motherly persona is charming and cute
2. Well, Hideyoshi is her historically and canonical husband, but..that doesn’t mean that’s the only guy I like with her. At first, I thought I could get behind a Kiyomasa x Nene ship, but Kiyomasa is actually kinda creepy towards her, and a creep in general, so I pass on that one now. I thought she and Hanzo were pretty nice together...actually, what happens in Orochi Land stays in Orochi Land, she should have got with Sun Jian ;)
3. Non-romantic OTP...hmm...her and Nouhime should interact more. I thought her and Bao Sanniang had a cute friendship in Orochi, same with Ayane and Sophitia, too.
4. I imagine making Nene into a ninja when she was first revealed must have been a little strange at first; as she was known for being a nun, and the woman at Hideyoshi’s side. With the removal of Kunoichi in SW2, I guess Koei needed a female ninja and seeing that they wanted to go into Hideyoshi’s reign, it made sense to have his behind-the-scenes- wife as a ninja. Not just any ninja, but a ninja mom who hands out spankings like she hands out candy, I guess Dommy Mommy is a trope people like in Japan? Seeing that we would later get Aya and Zhang Chunhua as very domineering mothers (if I’m wrong with this, sorry, I’d love an explanation from the JP fans on this :) )
But I can’t really think of an answer too much for this one other than ^^

What Isn’t Seen
WORDS: 1,096
SHIP: Nobunaga Oda (SW) x Ruthe (S/I)
SUMMARY: Ruthe talks about her husband Nobunaga with one of his retainers, Hideyoshi, and how Ruthe acts with said husband.
NOTES: This was inspired by a fanart I found on Pixiv of Oichi doing Nobunaga’s hair. pensive. also Ruthe is a she/they trans man
Reblogs okay and appreciated, but not required!
-----
"Why do you suppose our lord chose you?"
The question came suddenly from Hideyoshi, a retainer of the Oda and a friend to many. Those friends included the person he was addressing with this question; Ruthe, the wife of Nobunaga Oda, the 'lord' he was referring to. The two were the only ones in the room at the moment, as Nobunaga had stepped out for an important affair...Though he hadn't specified the affair's nature, nor its purpose...
Regardless, Ruthe looked up in puzzlement, but in curiosity as well. "I'm sorry?"
"A-ah, do forgive me," Hideyoshi, on the other hand, quickly looked panicked, "I uh...It isn't my place to question Lord Nobunaga...or you, my lady."
Ruthe shook their head. "No, it's okay. I was just surprised...And...I'm not quite sure what you mean."
"A-ah, well...If I have permission to continue..." Ruthe would nod, and the soldier went on. "It's just...You’re so quiet, soft spoken...Quite the opposite of our Lord...it's quite unexpected, isn't it, that you'd be his partner?"
Ruthe gazed at him for a few moments - maybe a couple more than necessary - before they laughed. It was a soft giggle,  but one thing was clear; they were very entertained. "Sorry, sorry...But...You think so?" They hummed at his clear confusion. "I guess you do more often see me in a formal setting..."
"A -a formal setting? My lady, are you implying you're...well...putting on an act? No, I must be reading too far into..."
"A little too far into it, yes...But is it really so shocking? I mean...You and Nene act differently when you're alone, don't you?"
"Erm..." Hideyoshi rubbed the back of his head, "No, uh - Nene is very open no matter the setting...She's uh, sweet though. Wonderful...you know, all the reasons I married her for." While he spoke kindly of her, his eyes practically darted as if his wife was going to show up and tell him off.
"Right...I guess that it's true you're both quite honest," Ruthe murmured. "Still....I suppose I simply don't have that luxury. It's not like I purposely act different, though. I kind of just get nervous in social settings..." They looked at their lap.
"A-ah, so you behave properly in a form of anxiety..." Hideyoshi blinked. "I suppose that is understandable, in a way..." He rubbed the back of his helmeted head. "Though it makes me curious what you're like in Lord Nobunaga's presence..."
Ruthe nodded, and smiled gently. "Admittedly, I'm not an entirely different person or something...I just communicate with him a bit...uniquely."
"How so?"
Ruthe thought for a moment. "Come closer."
Hideyoshi tilted his head, but then did so, leaning in...Ruthe proceeded to yank on his helmet, pulling it over his face. "Gah! L-Lady Ruthe!" He flushed in humiliation, pulling it back up frantically. "What was that for?!"
Ruthe laughed lightly, "Sorry,  sorry...But that was an example. If my husband wore a helmet, I'd do the same to him."
"Suddenly, I understand why he doesn't wear one..." grumbled the retainer, crossing his arms.
Then, both were alerted by a knocking on the sliding door. "A-ah, come in!" Ruthe called, quickly regaining their posture.
"My lady," a servant entered, offering a warm beverage on a wooden tray, "It is terribly cold, so Lord Nobunaga sent to give this to you."
"Hm?" Ruthe blinked, but smiled.  "That was quite kind of him...Thank you." Accepting the cup, they sipped from it carefully.
The servant began to leave,  but Ruthe stopped him. "Um...Where IS our lord at the moment?"
"Ah..." The servant blinked, "Lord Nobunaga? He is currently getting his hair done by Lady Oichi..."
Hideyoshi and Ruthe both paused. The servant awkwardly excused himself,  and then Hideyoshi would cry in despair;  "That's the important affair?!"
Ruthe snorted, though quickly covered their mouth. "Yes, that does sound quite important, doesn't it?" Still, after a moment she would stand. "I suppose I shall go assist Oichi."
"A-assist?"
"Well, my husband's hair is hard to braid at times..."
"You've braided Lord Nobunaga's hair?" Hideyoshi was very much horrified in expression.
"...Not to mention, I imagine Oichi will want to put flowers in it...He'll need to be convinced-"
"Flowers?!"
"Quite. He likes bellflowers, you know. It's quite cute..."
Hideyoshi stared. Then, he held his head in his hands. "I now understand there is much more to your marriage than anyone sees."

Is it true that Nene, Chacha (Yodo-dono) and Tatsuko (the daughter of Maria Kyōgoku) had a very friendly relationship, despite the inherently and inevitable competitive nature of concubines x main wives? If so, that's really cool (I already believe it's true at least in the Nene to Chacha extent, due to, you know, before Chacha becoming Hideyoshi's concubine she was under Nene's care)
I… actually wasn’t aware there’s “inherent competitiveness” in the first place. It can be assumed, as it’s not unreasonable to think that there will be competitiveness. Just that I try not to have presumptions into any situations.
In fact, Nene being unhappy with Hideyoshi having so many concubines (there’s the famous story of Nobunaga comforting her about it through a letter) seems to be a one of a kind explicit documentation of the wife having issues with concubines. I don’t know if there’s any other similar situation that is recorded.
I can try to go on a search for Nene specifically, to see if there’s publicly available citations of her correspondence. Otherwise… I’ve never seen any legitimate documentation of the wife and concubines not getting along. After all, there’s actually a few people who says that the concubines don’t even live in the castle with the lord. They can’t fight if they don’t meet.

Nene Warriors orochi 1 unlock.
Nene is one of my favorite characters to use. She's fast, a crowd clearer and pretty consistent with her moveset despite being a semi-clone/ the replacement of Kunoichi in Samurai Warriors 2. I also like her personality and how she is a kind mother to her adopted children, nodding off to the historical Nene when she couldn't biologically have kids (Hideyori was born from Chacha aka Lady Yodo, the eldest daughter of Oichi). Although no records have been found that she was a ninja (That would be pretty cool though), her loyalty to Hideyoshi knew no bounds and she did help in diplomatic affairs when he was stuck.
To unlock Nene in Warriors Orochi 1, choose the Wei story and go to battle 3-x Conquest of Ji province with whatever characters you choose. At the beginning of the battle, go down to the big base south to find Goemon in a cage. Release him and he will help you for a little bit. Follow him to a big chunk of your own army's officers just standing there minding their own business. He will use his ninja powers to locate a bunch of spy captains within the same area. They will have a name above their heads meaning that you need to kill them all amidst the peon ninjas. Once you get them all, Goemon leaves but two copies of Nene appear at the two altars. One Nene for each altar. There is a Nene for making a rock slide you and a Nene to make tornadoes. Stop them both quickly and then complete the stage however you like in victory. Nene should join after that. This method also works in Musou Orochi Z.

We all have certain image of Ieyasu, Mitsunari or Kiyomasa in our minds and when reading something that doesn’t fit it, we probably have a tendency to think that it isn’t true. When reading Kang Hang’s book (x), there are many places that don’t fit with the traditional story and so one tends to think it was a misunderstanding on Kang Hang’s part or just made up. After all, Kang Hang just wrote down what he heard around.
One such part is the part where Kiyomasa is said to turn against Ieyasu in order to remove him from power. (It’ll probably make more sense if you read the relevant parts.)
“[Kiyomasa] entered into blood alliances with Maeda Toshinaga, Ukita Hideie, Date Masamune, Hosokawa Tadaoki, Kuroda Nagamasa and the father and son Asano Nagamasa and Yoshinaga. Together, they promised that they would remove Ieyasu from power and divide his lands among themselves.”
In other part of the book, Uesugi Kagekatsu and Satake Yoshinobu are also included. Then he mentions that only five or six men didn’t participate, Terumoto and Kobayakawa Hideaki among them.
Then he says that it was Mitsunari who informed Ieyasu of this plan and ordered him to defend strategic positions in Omi (in order not to let Toshinaga pass... he also ordered Kanto generals to block the road that Toshinaga would use for reaching the capital).
Traditionally, it’s Mashita Nagamori who informs Ieyasu, here Kang Hang says that after Mitsunari informed him, Ieyasu asked Nagamori if he heard about it and he said yes.
Because of that certain image we all have, it doesn’t really sound like something that would happen. Mitsunari working with Ieyasu? Kiyomasa trying to attack Ieyasu?
Now, when I was going through “Ishida Mitsunari Den” written by Nakano Hitoshi, I came upon the above mentioned incident.
Ieyasu left Fushimi castle September 7th (October 25) 1599 and went to Osaka, where he first entered Ishida Mitsunari’s residence. He offered congratulatory speech to Hideyori and stayed in Osaka. On September 13th he moved out of Mitsunari’s residence, which was outside of Osaka castle, and moved into Ishida Masazumi’s residence, which was inside the castle grounds.
The reason for the move was most likely the fact that he learned there was a plan to assassinate him in works. Ieyasu didn’t have his own residence in Osaka, so Masazumi offered him his. After Kita-no Mandokoro (Nene) moved to Kyoto, Ieyasu entered Nishi no maru and started to live there.✶1
Because the assassination plan’s leader was Maeda Toshinaga, who was back in his province Kaga at that time, Ieyasu ordered him not to come to the capital. But in case he would, the road from Echizen would be blocked by Ōtani Yoshitsugu’s (adopted) son Yoshiharu and 1 000 men sent by Ishida Mitsunari. At the same time measures to block Kato Kiyomasa from reaching the capital were also taken (in case Kiyomasa decided to go up for some reason). The information about Yoshiharu, Mitsunari’s forces and blocking Kiyomasa’s route comes from a letter written by Shimazu Yoshihiro to Shimazu Tadatsune/Iehisa (dated September 21).
In the past I wrote a post about why Kiyomasa wasn’t at Sekigahara. I summarized that from Wikipedia, which also mentions the same Yoshihiro letter and says that blocking the route was because of Kiyomasa acting against Ieyasu by secretly helping the Ijuin clan.
In “Sekigahara Zen’ya” by Mitsunari Junji, the author mentions another letter by Yoshihiro to Tadatsune, dated September 1st, where Yoshihiro says that there are rumours that if Ieyasu comes down to calm the strife, Higo (Kato, Konishi...), Chikuzen and Chikugo (Kobayakawa, Tachibana...) will raise their armies against Ieyasu - so Shimazu have to decide what to do, because if they won’t agree with Ieyasu, Kyushu could fall into chaos (if those rumours turned out to be true).
So during the same period there were rumours floating around about Maeda Toshinaga and his men (Asano Nagamasa, Hijikata Katsuhisa and Ohno Harunaga) wanting to assassinate Ieyasu and also rumours that Kyushu might raise their army against Ieyasu. (And because Kiyomasa used to have a close relationship with Maeda Toshiie, it could easily lead to rumours about a coalition between Kiyomasa and Maeda clan.)
And Ishida clan acted in accordance with Ieyasu. Since it’s said that Masazumi (and Mitsunari)’s residences were freely offered (unless it was that kind of situation that you couldn’t say no to... and Mitsunari’s residence was probably empty... unless his wife and/or children were there... I assume that at least three of his children were at Osaka, the boys serving Hideyori, and Tatsuhime being adopted by Nene, but maybe they lived in the castle rather than a family mansion, idk) we can maybe even assume that the Ishida clan agreed with Ieyasu’s movement and were ok with him entering Osaka castle (even though he was supposed to live in Fushimi according to Hideyoshi’s will).
And in a way, it’s a really weird concept. It could definitely be just a pretense on Mitsunari’s side, waiting for a better opportunity, showing good will to Ieyasu. Mitsunari wasn’t stupid after all.
The result? Kang Hang’s book wasn’t really wrong.
✶1 I’m saying “moved to” because I don’t know the details, I definitely came across two versions:
Ieyasu made her leave
she left herself and let Ieyasu live there
I don’t know if there’s a third version that would be something like she left, because she wanted to move to Kyoto (i.e. without anyone’s influence), so Ieyasu decided to move into an empty keep.

Cha Cha  functional based
A fictional character based on Yodo-dono appears in James Clavell's Shōgun. This contrived protagonist is Lady Ochiba, who dislikes Toranaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu) because he presumably suspected her son was not fathered by the Taikō (Toyotomi Hideyoshi). However, she admires and trusts the Taikō's widow, Yodoko (Nene), who urges both her and Toranaga to marry so that Japan would remain united, and when the heir, Yaemon (Toyotomi Hideyori) comes of age, he can safely take control. In James Clavell's later novels it is revealed that, just as in real history, Toranaga eventually besieged Ochiba and Yaemon in their castle, prompting them to commit suicide.
In the 2009 film Goemon (五右衛門), Cha-Cha is portrayed by Ryōko Hirosue, and is depicted as being in love with Ishikawa Goemon (the equivalent of Robin Hood or Ned Kelly). She is eventually forced to marry Hideyoshi, though Goemon attempts to save Cha-Cha to no avail, dying in the attempt.
In the 2011 Taiga drama, Gō: Hime-tachi no Sengoku, Cha-cha was portrayed by Japanese actress Rie Miyazawa.[4] In the drama series Nobunaga no Chef (2013) - Episode 5, Chacha makes her appearance as a child by her parents' side. A great part of this episode revolves around her and the fact that she would not eat meat. Out of her mother's concern, the main character of this series is asked (or rather forced, else he would face death) to make a dish that will make Chacha like meat.
In Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard: The Fateful Sengoku Movie Battle, Cha-Cha appears in Gaim's portion of the film, in the World of the Sengoku Period.
Among video games, she appears in Capcom's most recent addition of the Onimusha series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, as Toyotomi Hideyoshi's concubine and sister to playable character Ohatsu, who affectionately calls Yodo by her childhood name, "Cha-Cha". She also appears as a playable character in Samurai Warriors: Sanada Maru. She also appears under the name Chacha, a Berserker-class Servant in Fate/Grand Order. Yodo-dono also appears as a supporting antagonists in 2017's Nioh.
