Bass Clarinet Goes Rogue: Alicia Lee's "Conversations with Myself"
Bass Clarinet Goes Rogue: Alicia Lee’s “Conversations with Myself”
New Focus FCR 302 OK, I admit that using the term “rogue” is a stretch. But titles of reviews should help draw the reader to it. And “clickbait” is the new “catchy”. But, in another sense one doesn’t generally think of the bass clarinet as a standalone recital instrument, even with electronics. Increasingly, it seems, new music purveyors are liberating instruments once unthinkable outside an…

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s BTTB could be seen as a class of albums, where a musician looks back on his opus. We’ve already talked about this phenomena and Paul Simon’s In The Blue Light fits the bill of such an endeavour. The album, which could end up becoming a coda to his career, finds him covering the pieces of his. The results are interesting, but the LP lacks the what-is-this factor of Stranger To Stranger, though I think In The Blue Light has different aims. He wants to remind us of the tune he felt didn’t get enough recognition and he sees the current phase of his career as the best place to do this. Of course, there’s a chance this narrative would change, he might surprise us soon, yet you do feel like he’s saying goodbye on this disc.

yMUSIC / First
いわゆるインディー・クラシック・シーンをリードする室内楽アンサンブル”yMusic”の最新作。メンバーは、Rob Moose (Viol.)、Nadia Sirota (Viola)、Gabriel Cabezas (Cello)、Hideaki Aomori (Cl.)、Alex Sopp (Fl.)、CJ Camerieri (Tp.)

Review: Ben Folds, 'So There'
“ Folds then wrote new pop songs that could be interpreted and embellished with a chamber orchestra. He found his match in yMusic, the inventive New York classical ensemble. Collectively and individually, the group's members — Rob Moose, CJ Camerieri, Gabriel Cabezas, Alex Sopp, Hideaki Aomori and Nadia Sirota — have collaborated with or performed works by a genre-defying swath of musicians. On So There, and especially in "Capable Of Anything" and the plaintive ballad "Not A Fan," yMusic doesn't merely accompany Folds, but also elevates the music with vivid instrumental textures and the fluttering interplay that pops up in the spaces between his voice and piano.”

yMusic Ensemble, New York, December 2011. From an appearance at the Rockwood Music Hall in Soho. While in New York in December, I had the good fortune to meet up with an old school crony, Steven Swartz, who further augmented my fortune by taking me to a CD-release performance by The yMusic Ensemble at the uniquely intimate Rockwood Music Hall in SoHo. While I knew that Steven has long been active promoting indie-classical artists, little did I know that we were about to hear one of the hottest and most highly regarded indie-whatever groups around. We arrived just in time for me to grab a stool in the tiny balcony, which happened to be the perfect seat for a photographer. yMusic's set was hair-raisingly stunning — a breathless set of engaging and percussive music delivered in classical chamber style by virtuoso performers. Apart from the music itself (unclassifiable but deeply memorable), the most inspiring thing about yMusic is the strong, soulful resolution of each player's voice; simply outrageous. Thanks Steven!! The members of yMusic are (l. to r.) Rob Moose, Nadia Sirota, Clarice Jensen, Hideaki Aomori, Alex Sopp and C.J. Camerieri. You can listen to pieces from their amazing 'Beautiful Mechanical' CD here. Or read more about them here.
