Plans for today
A small one-shot about Hiccup and Astrid's relationship after the divorce. (Modern AU, Valentine’s Day, Divorce AU)
***
“Today is Valentine's Day”
Astrid's voice made Hiccup come back to reality and realize that he was still watching after their children with his hand raised and a silly smile on his face. A little embarrassed, he rubbed his overgrown stubble.
“Oh... really? I completely forgot about it, to be honest.”
They were standing near his car, under a lush fir tree. The February wind stirred it, causing snow to fall from the branches. The rising sun gilded the snowflakes as they scurried in the frosty air.
Astrid chuckled.
“Oh, why am I not surprised?”
“You know I'm not really interested… In all this,” Hiccup replied with a vague wave of his hand and looked at his ex-wife. “Do you have any plans for today?”
“Well, Thuggory invited me to his city. Again. I'm not up to dating right now,” Astrid shrugged casually and added, noticing that Hiccup's eyebrows went up questioningly. “Children, work… You know.”
“Yes...” sighed Hiccup, creating a new cloud of steam.
Astrid leaned against his car, and Hiccup noticed that her jacket was not buttoned up to the end. He was always struck by the equanimity with which his ex-wife treated Berk's frosts. However, this attitude did not apply to children – especially after the birth of Nuffink, who was always a rather sickly child – so Hiccup had no reason to worry.
The shadows of Zephyr and Nuffink flashed in the window of a small cottage. Hiccup could almost see his son wiping his nose with his sleeve every now and then, as his daughter impatiently circled the room, wanting to tell her mother how the hike went.
“I can take the children to my place for two more days if you don't mind”
Astrid snorted and looked at him. Surprise and amusement mixed in her gaze.
“So I can meet Thuggory?” Astrid drew her eyebrows together in disbelief, holding back a smile. Hiccup shrugged his shoulders.
“Well, I think you need a rest.”
“Oh, I had a great rest while you three were camping. Don't worry, I'll find time for sex.”
“That's comforting.”
Astrid laughed out loud, throwing her head back – this gesture, which Hiccup had forgotten about, caused a special smile on his face.
“Since you're here, you could help me with breakfast,” Astrid said, heading towards the house. She stopped halfway and smiled teasingly over her shoulder. “Unless, of course, you have plans for today.”
“I'm always free for you, my lady,” Hiccup smiled wryly and spread his hands.
Astrid was confused for a moment when she heard the old nickname, but she smiled again and continued walking through the snow. It seemed to Hiccup that the smile that returned to her face was a little more gentle than the previous one. He pushed the thought away.

Hello! Kind of a silly question, but which of the how to train your dragon characters do you think would make good Jedi? -I hope you’re having a good day/afternoon/evening!
I don't think it's silly at all! I think it's kind of a fun question to contemplate, actually. To be honest, I think all of the main characters would probably do at least okay in the Order, but for the sake of the question....characters I think would make great Jedi:
Hiccup and Astrid, definitely. Hiccup would thrive in the Jedi Order once he finally found his footing (I feel like he'd be an Ezra Bridger-type, with a special connection to and affinity for animals of all kinds). Astrid reminds me a lot of both Jaina Solo and Siri Tachi from the EU; a great leader who has to learn how to put her duty before her pride.
Fishlegs: that boy is an archivist at heart. Put him under Jocasta Nu's tutelage and he would thrive.
Characters that would make okay Jedi but would probably be better off somewhere else:
Stoick: the better storytelling potential for Stoick within the Star Wars universe is to have him be the leader of a clan/planet or a Galactic Senator who gave up his child to the Jedi and has to watch him grow up from afar.
Valka: ex-Jedi who left the Order because she fell in love with Stoick. Presumed dead after a deadly attack on the city.
Snotlout: again for storytelling potential, I think it would be fun if Snotlout was Force Sensitive enough to be a Jedi but because Hiccup was given up to the Order first, the clan decided that he should remain with them to take over since Hiccup isn't in the line of succession anymore.
Characters who probably shouldn't be Jedi under any circumstances:
Ruffnut and Tuffnut: they'd be pirates or smugglers. They're probably members of Hondo's crew.
Gobber: the mechanic equivalent of Dex. The much-loved contract mechanic who lives just outside the Temple and gives younglings sweets.
And yes, I have Thoughts™ on how Hiccstrid could still happen within the bounds of this AU.

The Perks Of Your Boyfriend Being A Ghost
HTTYD -- Hiccstrid -- Rated E -- Ghost boyfriend AU -- so I guess Hiccup must have died at some point -- Modern AU -- I Guess...?
Summary: As a single mother of three children, Astrid's life is stressful and barely ever about her at all. Just good that her undead ghost boyfriend Hiccup makes sure that she gets some stress relief from time to time.
AN: As it says in the tags, this is 200% self-indulgent projecting. The only/main difference is that I'm not a single mother, and in fact have a loving and caring husband who helps as best he can. But still, let me keep my fantasies. ;P
. o O o .
With an exhausted sigh, Astrid leaned against the closed door and sank to the ground. Finally, Brianna was asleep, too. Zephyr and Nuffink had been restless as well after being locked inside on a bad weather day, had only calmed down two hours after their usual bedtime, but the eighteen months old toddler had taken even longer. But then, she was teething, so that wasn't surprising. Astrid just hoped that she would have a couple of hours now before either of her children needed her again. Not like last night where Nuffink had sneaked into her bed after a bad dream and Brianna hadn't wanted to sleep longer than six in the morning at all…
Astrid loved her children with all her heart, she really did. After she'd left her now-ex-husband when she'd learned about his constant cheating – and had inherited his fortune when he'd driven himself off a cliff soon after – Zephyr, Nuffink, and little Brianna were the most important and precious parts of her life. Under no circumstance at all would she ever give them up, and after they'd all moved into her great-grandaunt’s old mansion, their life was slowly settling into something more normal again. Something good even. They were happy.
But still, sometimes being a single mother was just exhausting and brought her to her limits. As much as she enjoyed taking care of her toddler or playing games with the older ones, sometimes she wished she could get just half an hour for herself. There was an archery range behind the house and she was dying to give her old hobby a try. But so far, she hasn't gotten the chance.
Even now, there were still so many other things to do. Like cleaning up, at least the most important parts of the house, sorting clothes so Zephyr wouldn't need to rummage through her brother's socks again to find a shirt, and the kitchen was in dire need of a thorough clean up as well. Maybe, if she put in an effort, she could get at least some of those tasks done…
However, when she tried to stand up, she found that she couldn't. Her legs gave way midway and she slumped back onto the hard ground with low outcry.
For a second or three, she just sat there in silence. Then some incoherent noises bubbled up from deep within her chest, and not even she could say whether she was laughing or crying.
Now she was even too exhausted and weak to simply stand up? That was ridiculous!
She tried again but this time, she didn't even manage to position her feet correctly; they just slid across the floor the moment she straightened her legs. And when she lifted her hands, just holding them before her eyes, they were shaking.
Defeated, she let her head fall against the door behind her. She was sobbing now, low but unrestrained. What was she supposed to do? She couldn't just sit here all night. There was so much left to do, so many tasks and duties, and failing her children just wasn't an option. They were all she had left and they depended on her.
She couldn't say for how long she sat there, crying from exhaustion, when she felt it. The brush of something cool against her wet cheek and along her neck. It could have been mistaken as a draft, nothing uncommon in an old house like this one – but Astrid knew better. The sensation returned, cool fingers caressing her skin, and without her help, her lips twitched into a weak smile.
Come…
She let out a heavy sigh. Right. Exhausted as she was, trying to get even one of her tasks done tonight was futile. It was far more sensible to get as much rest as she could so that, hopefully, she would function better in the morning.
This time, it worked when she tried to get on her feet. Her knees were shaking and she kept one hand firmly on the wall for stabilisation, but at least she could walk. Luckily, she didn't have to go far though, only to the other end of the corridor to where her own bedroom was. With her last strength, she stripped off her clothes and put on her comfortable flannel pyjama before she slipped beneath the sheets with a relieved sigh, revelling in the softness of her bed with her eyes closed.
Yes, that’s it.
There it was again, that featherlike touch, light as a breeze as it caressed her forehead and along her temple. As if brushing away a strand of hair.
That’s better, isn’t it?
Humming, she leaned into the touch, another soft smile playing around her lips. “Yes, it is,” she murmured into the darkness around her. “Thank you.”
Anytime.
There was a hint of humour in the voice, even as it was nothing but a faint echo inside her head, as always. Astrid opened her eyes, wanted to see whether there was a matching smile to go with that tone.
The other side of her bed wasn’t empty anymore, as it had been only moments before. Now, the outline of a figure was visible, a man lying next to her. Except that it wasn’t really a man, just his memory. He was pale, translucent, and aside from his face and the hand hovering near her face, he even seemed a little blurry. As if he was nothing but mist and the next draft would blow him away.
There was indeed an amused smile playing around his lips, but his eyes were full of concern. From the painting that hung downstairs in the entry hall, she knew that these eyes once had been vibrantly green, like the forest on a summer day, and that the unruly hair on his head used to be a beautiful shade of reddish-brown. Now, however, all colours were washed away by time and death, even as he was glowing slightly in the darkness of the night.
You’re working too hard.
She chuckled weakly at his word. “Well, there’s little I can do about that. They need me so I have no choice. Not as if I can take a day off from being a mum.”
He frowned but nodded. True. They’re lucky to have you, though. Not all parents care this much.
Astrid shrugged. To her, it was no question. Her children came first, always.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was still stunned at how easily she could talk to the ghost of a man that had lived long before her in this house. But it felt so natural, so easy. Aside from the very first seconds, she hadn’t even been afraid of him.
Maybe that was because he wasn’t really here and she was just going insane. But Astrid didn’t want to think about that. Hiccup felt so real. Besides, she never could have come up with such a ridiculous name on her own anyway.
Astrid was bone-tired, but watching him was still something she didn’t want to miss out on. And as they gazed at each other, his features changed; the frown and worries from before melted away and got replaced by a surprising warmth and only a small hint of underlying sadness.
You’re amazing…
His words were nothing but a whisper in her mind as he leaned closer and cool lips brushed against her own. It made her heart flutter in joy, her eyes falling close.
Her instincts told her to lift her arms, to wrap them around her lover, to hold him close. She wanted to run her fingers through his soft hair, wanted to explore the wiry strength of his shoulder, his back. But with Hiccup, that wasn't possible. It already took all his will power to let her feel him at all, to garner enough solidity for his lips and tongue to not pass right through her. At least, that’s what he’d told her all those weeks ago when this wonderful craziness had started.
So instead, she just enjoyed what she could, the cool pressure of his mouth against her own, his presence, grabbing at her soft blanket instead of firm flesh. But if that was the price she had to pay for loving a ghost then she would pay it. Because Hiccup was worth it.
I think you deserve some stress relief.
Astrid hummed when his lips wandered along her jaw and down her neck. It tickled but in the most wonderful way, the way that made her shiver in anticipation and tiny sparks of electricity run through her entire body. He always knew what she needed, be it someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on – or this. And he was so good at this, too. A soft kiss here, a gentle bite there, and she was putty in his incorporate hands.
A soft moan slipped from her mouth when he suckled on her neck, directly above her pulse point, and her mind went blissfully blank. This was just what she needed. She luxuriated in the sensations he elicited in her body, the chance to just let go of everything. But then, she gasped when she felt something new. At first, she thought he'd brought a hand to her breast, to caress and squeeze at flesh and let cool fingers play with sensitive nipples. Except that it felt different, not like fingers but teeth gently nipping, lips and a tongue sucking on the hardening bud. Her eyes widened when she felt the same at her other breast too, three ghostly mouthed now working to drive her insane.
"I-is that all you?" she asked, shifting a little until she could look at him.
Hiccup had a look of high concentration on his face, his eyebrows furrowed. Yes. He seemed to hesitate for a moment. Is it okay for you?
Humming, Astrid laid back down into her cushion and nodded. "It is. I was just surprised, is all."
In her mind, she heard him chuckle, a little embarrassed. It's got to have at least one perk that I don't have a solid form…
That was something she couldn't really argue with. She wished she could feel more of him, his body, his warmth, his breath on her skin or his beating heart beneath her hand on his chest. But since none of that was possible, multiple mouths and hands to pleasure her… well, she at least wouldn't say no to this.
Although… it was so surreal. She was still wearing her warm pyjama and lay beneath the heavy blanket, safe from the cool night air. And yet, she could feel his phantom touches on her skin as if she was entirely bare to him – which in a way she was. Neither walls nor fabric meant anything to him.
After kissing her once more on her lips, so soft and sweet that she nearly melted, Hiccup returned his attention to the rest of her body. Before long, she could feel him everywhere. Phantom mouths were suckling on her breasts, her clit, and even her toes, tongues teasing and lapping eagerly as phantom hands ran over her entire body, caressing over delicate skin or squeezing to heighten her sensitivity.
The onslaught of sensations left her writhing and twisting between her sheets, gasping and moaning. But no matter how much she moved, his phantom touch always followed. She couldn’t escape, couldn’t get even the smallest reprieve. All she could do was press her forearm to her mouth to muffle the endless stream of moans and little screams that left her throat. It could have been scary, feeling so helpless and being at someone else’s mercy like this. But this was Hiccup and she trusted him completely. She couldn’t even say why, she just knew that she had nothing to fear when she was with him.
And it was wonderful. All her worries and the stress of the day melted off her as her body and mind got submerged in this endless ocean of sensations. Chasing only one feeling was impossible, so she quickly gave up to even try and instead gave herself over to him, to his care.
Astrid had no idea for how long he kept her in this wonderfully-mindless state of need and longing; it was just an endless rollercoaster of building pleasure. Everything inside her was tense, coiled so tightly like never before until he finally showed mercy. Her orgasm washed through her like a crashing wave, so powerful that it made her entire body shake violently, her back arching off the bed and her lips were parted in a silent scream. Her mind empty of every thought.
When it was over, she only slowly drifted down from her height, didn’t want it to end. She felt better than in a long while, safe, secure, cared for.
“Thank you,” she sighed into the darkness, her voice so weak that it nearly broke. “I… I think I needed this.”
Again, she heard him chuckle inside her head. I think you’re right there. And I also think you deserved it. You’re doing so much and–
He broke off when another sound echoed through the old house, a crying child. Brianna must have woken up. But before Astrid could react, could even do so much as let out a tired groan, it had stopped again. Surprised and a little confused, she blinked to clear her mind of its blissful haze, then jumped when Hiccup appeared next to her again. She hadn’t even registered that he’d left.
It’s okay. She’d just lost Mr Carrot, but once he was back in her arms, she fell asleep again.
Smiling, Astrid relaxed back into her cushions. Mr Carrot was Brianna’s cuddly rabbit. He was old, a hand-me-down from Astrid’s own grandmother, and rather ugly to be honest. But Brianna loved the beast.
“And thank you again,” she murmured, exhaustion taking her quickly now. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
The same you’re doing now. Be the best mum a child could ask for.
Her lips twitched into a sad smile. Hiccup's own mother had left him when he'd been younger than Brianna was now, so his bar of what counted as a good mother was bound to be rather low. All she did was struggling not to fail, really.
"How did you do that?" she asked to change the topic. "Didn't you say it costs all your concentration and energy to let me feel you at all?
He nodded, his eyes flickering away as if he was embarrassed. It did in the beginning. But the more time I spend with you, the stronger I feel. I barely have to think about simple touches at all anymore. To prove his point, he reached for her face and brushed a few sweats strands of hair out of her face. So I thought I could try something more… advanced.
“Mmmh, a good idea.”
Once more, she heard him chuckle in her mind. Now, rest. You’re going to need your strength tomorrow.
Sighing, Astrid complied. She curled up in her bed, feeling more relaxed than she had in days, and hummed in surprise and delight when she somewhat felt Hiccup curl around her back. He even wrapped an arm around her waist without it passing right through her. Hopefully, they would soon get the chance to further explore Hiccup’s newfound strength.
After a good night’s sleep!

"I just want to write a quick one-shot. Nothing difficult. Just something short to get back into writing. It won't get any sequels."
That's what I told myself the entire time, even when I was plotting out several more chapters for this verse. Ah, well... This does work well on it's own for now. And I can always add more when I feel like it and have the time.

Headcanon that in my Like Heaven AU, Hiccstrid’s daughter Ingrid is a Daddy’s girl until she hits her teens. Suddenly, Astrid is the “cool” parent that Ingrid can go to if she wants to gossip about her crushes. Astrid’s the one who buys Ingrid her first bikini, lets her get her nose pierced, and takes her to get rose gold highlights in her hair.
Hiccup is hurt when he finds out there was a father-daughter dance at Ingrid’s school and she went out with her friends instead of going to the dance with him, especially since her brother Finn invited Astrid to the mother-son dance. Hiccup is overprotective, and Ingrid is afraid he’ll embarrass her in front of her friends. (Hiccup does get to go to the father-daughter dance with his youngest daughter, Erika, when she’s in high school.)
But when Ingrid’s boyfriend, who’s a year older than her, decides they should take a break when he goes to college, she goes to Hiccup. Astrid might be the cool mom, but she’s not as sensitive as Hiccup. Where Astrid will tell her girls they’re better than their exes and offer to take them axe-throwing (with Finn, she has a soft spot because he’s such a Mama’s boy and he’s her favorite), Hiccup will give cuddles and take them to get ice cream.

Try It For Me
Modern AU. Hiccup keeps interrupting Astrid’s dates, and she has to confront him about it. Oneshot.
Astrid felt as though she could fall asleep any second now.
Her date, John, had not closed his mouth since they walked into the restaurant. Whether it was something about his father being an alumnus of some famous college, or how there were loads of “cuisines” better than the one they were in right now, it was simply getting on her nerves.
It wasn’t like she’d never dated someone who talked a lot. But...she’d liked listening to his voice, as opposed to how she would rather stab herself with the fork than hear one more word out of this guy’s mouth.
That was why when Hiccup walked into the restaurant, decked in his black leather jacket and mussed up hair (which meant he’d come here on his motorcycle), with his eyes seeking only her out, she felt a huge amount of relief - along with the usual annoyance.
“Will you excuse me?” Astrid asked, smoothly cutting John off. He looked surprised, as though no one had ever done that before, but nodded and waved her off as he took out his phone.
He was absorbed enough that he didn’t see Astrid grabbing her ex-boyfriend’s arm and dragging him outside, where a cool breeze played with both of their hair.
Hiccup had a light smirk plastered on his face. “If you wanted me this badly -”
“Hiccup, this is ridiculous.” She stepped up to him, close enough for his hair to touch her forehead, and scowled. “This is the fourth date you’ve interrupted.”
He grinned. “Interrupted? I just came looking for a bite to eat. You’re the one who dragged me out here.” He leaned down even more, enough for their noses to touch. “You know, like you wanted to spend time with me.”
Astrid didn’t - couldn’t - push him away. Not when he made her feel things that she missed feeling. Not when his scent was so sweet and comforting. Not when she wanted to kiss him.
“You’ve been looking for a bite to eat everywhere I go on a date.” She poked his chest hardly, trying her best to be angry. “Now I’m having fun in there -”
Hiccup laughed - and her stomach flipped. “You are not having fun in there. John, right? Uh, let me guess.” He continued in a stiff voice. “And then Father graduated, and of course, I’ll be following in his footsteps, I’m sure he’d love to help a lovely lady such as yourself -”
It was a near perfect imitation. Before she realized it, a giggle slipped out of her, and Hiccup bit his lip as he grinned.
“Shut up,” she muttered, smacking his chest gently and trying to stop herself from smiling. “He’s been perfectly nice. Opening doors and whatnot.”
Hiccup laughed again, louder, until she placed her hand on his mouth, glancing inside the restaurant. John was still on his phone.
“Opening doors, what a charmer.”
Astrid rolled her eyes before adopting a sterner expression. “Okay, that’s enough. You shouldn’t be here. Don’t give me that bullshit about just running into me. I don’t know how know where I’m gonna be all the time, but this has to stop. We’re done.”
“If we were done,” Hiccup retorted, leaning down again, “then you would flip me over your shoulder and tell me to fuck off. So don’t you give me that, Hofferson. We’re ‘over’ because you’re scared.”
“I don’t get scared,” Astrid snapped, “we broke up because my father doesn’t like you, and that’s that. I’d like to respect his wishes.”
Hiccup finally dropped his smug expression and in his eyes came a tender look. He was close enough for her to feel his breath on her. And his lips were tantalizingly near, and gods she wanted to kiss him so badly. She wanted to push him against the wall, grab him by the collar of his stupid jacket, and assault his lips with every ounce of passion she had.
“Astrid, we both know that’s not true,” Hiccup whispered.
She closed her eyes for a second, imagining that they were at his house, curled up on the couch with their arms around each other. He would whisper sweet nothings in her ear and she’d be able to sigh and lean back, basking in the comfort.
“Please, Ast,” he pleaded, cupping her cheek. “Please, milady.”
He had to pull the nickname out, that son of a half troll.
“Hiccup, there’s nothing for us to talk about.”
“You don’t want to respect your father’s wishes! You do stuff that he disapproves of all the time!” He scowled, his eyes showing her own reflected hurt. “You broke up with me because he threatened me! You were afraid he was going to hurt me!”
Once he started shouting, she began as well. “Of course I was afraid, you jerk!” She hit his chest, glaring up at him furiously. “Of course I don’t want you to get hurt!” She hit him again, in the same spot. “I don’t want something to happen to you because of me!” Smack. “I don’t want - mmph.”
He cut her off with a kiss, and something inside her exploded. She’d been missing - no, craving was more appropriate. She’d been craving this for weeks, and gods, it felt just as good as before, if not better.
Astrid let herself kiss back for two seconds before pushing him back. While it felt amazing, she was there on a date, and even though said date hadn’t realized how long she’d been gone, this wasn’t right.
“We’ll work something out,” Hiccup said urgently, cupping her face and stroking her cheek with his thumb gently, “we’ll keep it a secret. Or we’ll talk some sense into him. Please, Astrid, try. For me.”
She looked up at him and sighed, leaning in and gently brushing their lips together.
He was right. She was still scared, terrified, that her father would do something horrible to Hiccup, but that didn’t stop him from being right.
Astrid pulled back and stepped away from him, walking towards the restaurant.
“Ast?”
“I have a date to finish.” She put her hand on the door handle and looked at her ex boyfriend. “But tomorrow, after I’ve told him it won’t work out, meet me here. Okay?”
Hiccup grinned so widely it made her heart flutter. “Okay.”
Astrid smiled back before stepping back into the restaurant, feeling much more happy than she had the first time she came in.
They’d work it out.
I hope you guys liked it! I’m nervous writing Hiccstrid anymore, but this idea really just came to me all of a sudden, so here you go.

Hiccupy heart (Chapter 1)
Summary:  It didn't matter that Hiccup and Astrid used to be best friends, somewhere in grade school and middle school—back when the world used to be fun before everyone hit their growth spurt and he was plus one leg and one mother. Until Hiccup finally got his soul mark; And guess who's name was it? Astrid Hofferson.
Drama/Romance. Hiccstrid. Soul mate AU.
FF.net | Ao3
A/N: Special thanks to @slavicviking for helping me beta the initial draft of the chapter.
I would like to also mention that this story being set in Highschool does not make this a Highschool AU. Also, the story will be focused equally on both Hiccup and Astrid, aiming to be a Man/Woman vs. Self before we finally get to the sweet parts.
Without further delay.
For the umpteenth time, Hiccup found himself staring at the name imprinted on his left forearm; Hiccup still couldn't believe his luck.
Astrid Hofferson
To answer his own questions of disbelief—Yes. Astrid Hofferson was his soul mate, unless, the gods decided to play a cruel prank on him, only to replace the dimly glowing blue runes on his left forearm with Astrid's complete name on it with Mildew the following morning.
It was still Astrid Hofferson.
Ha! Hiccup called it, he always had this sort of indescribable 'Pull' he felt with Astrid. It was like when he would as much as breathe the same air as Astrid—he would feel like oxygen was overrated.
As if Hiccup wasn't lucky enough. He was also going to be a father! By the way, did he mention that Astrid was going to be the mother?
Okay, that sounded all wrong—and please don't tell Astrid! She would murder him.  Also, if you could try not to mention it to her muscle-head boyfriend either—who would soon be her ex once Hiccup had shown Astrid his soul mark.
It was just a stupid economics project. No sexual intercourse; therefore, no one was actually pregnant and definitely nothing was going on between Hiccup and Astrid. After all, he was, well, Hiccup and she was Astrid—you get the idea. She was the same girl who wouldn't approach him even if she were on fire and he was holding the last bucket of water.
Unfortunately for her and luckily for him, this project was not about the worlds' water supply. The project was about being a fake married couple that was to manage a theoretical household and take care of a flour baby. Despite that, Hiccup was a hundred percent sure that he wasn't on the top of Astrid's list of potential fake husbands for a fake happily-ever-after scenario.
But Ma'am Ack's random pairing generator couldn't care less who's holding the last bucket of water on Earth. Unless, you have your soul mark, which he just had now, you were not exempted from the random pairing system as mandated by the law.
The whole soul mate thing didn’t really exist until year 1980s. Apparently, It was a Millennial only thing, even then, not everyone would be fortunate to be 'gifted by the gods' and having a soul mark was still considered to be very new. So the government mandated some laws that encouraged people to have lives beyond soul mates, and the random pairing system for academics was one of them.
But Hiccup was busy staring at his soul mark (for like… the whole day), instead of paying attention to the class. And after he was done staring at it, he would blink his eyes and proceed to stare at it again, and again... and again.
He just heard Ma'am Ack loudly announcing his horrendous name next to Astrid's beautiful one.
He was confused for a moment until he looked forward and saw 'Economics Project - Documentation' and '40% of the grade' in the slideshow. He realized it was the dreaded 'Fake Parent' and 'Flour Baby' thing every senior student had been dreading ever since the beginning of the school year.
He almost jumped on top of his table and cried in victory. Thankfully, he managed to contain himself—he wasn't that bold.
Murmurs and hushed whispers filled the classroom as the other students looked around in confusion. A few "who the heck is Hiccup Haddock"s and mentions of "how lucky he was" echoed as the classmates discussed the announcement among each other.
Their reaction was, basically, a confirmation from everyone how much his non-existent high school life sucked ass. It was not like he didn't have any friends, it was just his social status when compared to Astrid's, it was a matter of Valhalla and Helheim. But he couldn't care less what his classmates thought. After all, it was HIM who was not only paired with the hottest girl in school but, also soul mates with her—not them.
Hiccup waited for far too long for something this cliché to finally happen to him. Eighteen long years of his life, he finally got his soul mark and found his soul mate. And to think that she was always so close to him.
All he had to do now was say hi to her, but when he was about to, there was something about her expression that kept him rooted in place.
There was something about scowl on her beautiful face, trying not to show even the slightest bit of recognition upon hearing his name... or maybe she just didn't care – at least he hoped, which wasn't much better. He didn't know which one he preferred to be honest.
There was no mistaking it, Hiccup recognized that look on her face.
She always knew
—and he didn't dare think what followed the thought: She always knew (and she didn't want it... She didn't want to be your soul mate.)
It didn't matter that Hiccup and Astrid used to be best friends, somewhere in grade school and middle school—back when the world used to be fun before everyone hit their growth spurt and he was plus one leg and one mother.
Hiccup still hadn't figured out what happened to their friendship. Astrid started distancing herself from him. He didn't dare to try and decipher what was going on with the girls' mind. He'd heard enough stories from both Gobber and his father about the horrors of it.
Hiccup was a good friend and Astrid was his best friend (also, not so secretly, a crush). He decided he would just give her some space and in no time they'd get back to hanging out in their clubhouse.
He waited and… waited some more.
It didn't happen.
Now he understood.
She always knew.
But now... Hiccup felt so stupid. Even though he didn't pick the person he fell-in-love with, his heart did; ever since the day they exchanged lollipop rings and made a pinky promise to get married when they grew up. They were Eight then.
Hiccup always had this irrational, unrequited crush on Astrid, him clinging to some semblance of hope that maybe—just maybe—there was a chance, as slim as it was. All he hoped for was that she would at least acknowledge him—even if it was only for old times' sake. He also hoped that fate would take over thing from there for Hiccup. Astrid would realize that she was dating the wrong guy all along. And then he, Hiccup, her soul mate, would come —her one-legged knight with his shiny, metal leg.
She always knew.
Years of watching Astrid Hofferson from the sidelines, like puzzle pieces, flashes of images started flowing in his mind.
(Why she always had a bandage on her left forearm, the very same spot as his soul mark.
Or how venomous she glares at her watch every time she checked the time. It wasn't about the time, after all, it was about his name etched on her skin.)
A mixture of irrational, red emotions erupted inside him, fully burning him. There was a throbbing sensation followed by a sudden sharp hissing pain, on his left forearm, as if he felt lava leaked from his volcanic emotions dripping at his soul mark.
Deeply-rooted in his ever-so-hopeless-hiccupy-heart; a stubborn, dark thought he strongly refused to acknowledge finally crept up on him.
(It was just a stupid childhood friendship, She will never look back at you. She will never love you. Why would she? You're a 'hiccup' after all.)
She always knew
—and he should have known better.
To his surprise, Hiccup just sighed; maybe his father was right, as much as he hated to admit it. His brain was definitely under siege and he needed to stop being ... all that. He mentally gestured all of himself.
Hiccup was eighteen- enough with fantasies and time for him to grow up and face reality. Maybe it was time for him to give up on his quest of asking Astrid Hofferson to be his prom date, and maybe listen to his father's wishes of him enrolling a 'Real Degree Program' in an 'Actual University' for a start.
The bell rang, signaling that the economics class was over. Hiccup didn't feel like talking to Astrid about being paired in the project anymore. He, in his mind, did the two of them a favor and simply left the room unlike the rest of the class who stayed to talk with their partners for the project.
He could work on the project all by himself if he wanted too if allowed to, why not? He was a straight A+ student and graduating as the valedictorian was pretty much in his bag. If anyone would be qualified to finish a pair project alone, it would be him.
If ever, he was sure Astrid probably could do the same without even bothering with his input and opinion. Why wouldn't she? She was Astrid Hofferson, Hiccup thought bitterly. It was probably for the best if that happened.
Of all the possible outcomes that he fantasized, daydreamed for a million times about Astrid being his Soulmate for his whole life, which all of them involved that magical spark and click when their eyes finally met; this certainly was not the outcome he would expect—one where he would be the one to walk away.
Surprisingly, he found the idea very comforting. He actually felt better missing his once in a lifetime chance to talk with Astrid Hofferson. Just before the day started, Hiccup would die a happy knowing Astrid was his soul mate.
But now, He felt like letting go of a half-a-weight he'd always burdened. He may or may not ever feel the completely weightless feeling or 'feels like flying' sensation being with his soul mate. If his other half didn't want anything to do with him, then so be it. He wasn't going to be defined by his stupid attraction to his soul mate anymore.
For the first time in a very long time, Hiccup found himself smiling freely. Not his usual sarcastic self-deprecating smile. A real, genuine one.
It was from that moment that Hiccup's life would finally start to turn around for better or worse.
If he only knew that a certain blonde was watching him that exact moment.

1 2 4 5 10 11 for your amazing eret the art model au i don't know the name of offhand (10 also includes dagcup) I LOVE THAT FIC! it kills me. was the first of your i ever read and just because of the line about snotlout questioning his sexuality. Anyway
YES. PRACTICALLY CLICHE THAT I HAVEN’T THOUGHT OF IN FOREVER BUT REALLY WAS MY BEST WORK EVER.
1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?
In the nature of total honestly, I was writing my Snotstrid masterpiece au Bring it Back Home, which has the most amazing fanart I’ve ever made, and honestly, I was thinking how to top it.  Like, how do I top ex-MLB player Snotlout teaching little league in his home town while his dad has cancer?  How do I out shitty-romance-novel that?  And the answer is art-model Eret.  Who wears greasy mechanic coveralls and cares for his co-ex-con bestie Dagur with tenderness and empathy.
2. What scene did you first put down?
Chapter 1.  I wrote it in order, for a while, which is weird for me.  But I wanted to write Hiccstrid walking into an art room and flirting, then Dagur, Hiccup’s ex-flame shows up and Eret drops trou and prudestrid has an aneurysm and something like plot occurs.
4. What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
I looked this up for you.  It’s not posted yet, but wow, it’s something.  I literally laugh about it at least weekly because wtf.
“You two?”  Dagur smiles a drippy smile, wiping his nose on his sleeve.  “Fucking finally, guys, I was asking my buddy about his snake pit.  I was going to throw Astrid into it so you’d save her and you guys would get over whatever stupid hurdle was holding you back.”
“How’s Rob doing?  I haven’t seen him in a while.”
“You have a buddy with a snake pit?”  Astrid and Eret ask at the exact same time.  Dagur laughs.
“Classic you guys.  You should have a couple name like Brangelina or-or-or Dagcup!”  He sobs again, slumping forward to cradle his face in his hands.
5. What part was hardest to write?
SMUT.  It’s where I’m stuck.  It’s where I always get stuck.  I’m so bad at smut, like, so bad.  Really bad.  It’s so hard.
10. Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
Because this came right after the first fic where I made Snotstrid work, I wanted to make Erestrid work.  Given I’ve never finished this fic, I”ve never done it. And it drives me crazy, tbh.  And the easiest way to make anything but hiccstrid work is to otherwise occupy Hiccup, like with a weird, competitive, artistic sex thing with Dagur.
11. What do you like best about this fic?
Honestly, I love writing Dagur.  And I love prudestrid?  Which is what I call her in my head because god, she’s such a mess.  She’s like “I’ve never eaten delicious food because it would distract me from my quest to redeem my family name” and she’s my life.  She’s like everything I loved most about type A, hyperfocused, murder queen httyd Astrid all at once.

Honest curiosity, are you against hiccstrid in general, or just rtte hiccstrid? Or just hiccup? Lol
uhm,,, all the above i guess lmao
actually, that’s untrue,, i love httyd1 hiccup. he was great, except for that whole get the girl rubbish. (and that’s the writer’s fault,, not his so.....) but i’m against all other hiccups they suck im gonna fight them in a coles parking lot
once i tried to write a “fixing hiccstrid” post bc like, i definitely think it could have been done way better, that was interesting and cared abt both their characters more,, i think i could like it/be okay with it,,,, but like looking into it astrid was written as a cool girl viking pixie dream girl??? a sexy ball of fire y’all,,, omfg,,, and i just. nope, that’s Too Much for me. i’m not about that girls are just plot devices for boys life (this post explains this concept more in context of one of my concepts of hiccstrid i like)
but there IS concepts of hiccstrid i do like. things i’m not opposed to. mostly they involve,,, it being ex/breaking up/didn’t work out (bc hiccup !!!! doesn’t !!! know !!! who !! astrid is!!! he was into a fake her!!!! astrid !! deserves !! better !!!!!!! and ?? choice),,, that one abt astrid doing her duty one! and like??? ot3 me the fuck up w/ tuff in the mix hoenstly... i have a modern au that’s ??? actually tuff/astrid, tuff/hiccup shut up its good ok
lmao sorry this got long, i just think it’s nuanaced,,,,, i hope i answered ur question pls ask more if you’d like!!

Spin The Bottle
(Once more for real)
Hiccstrid - Modern AU - T-rated
Summary: Hiccup and Astrid agree: Their relationship is too fresh to expose it to their overly nosy friends. But when a game of drunk Spin the Bottle presents them with a dare including ice cubes... They  might be too distracted to care.
Notes: What can I say? This is just another piece of mindless fluff for my OTP. And I had a lot of fun looking up various dares for this short! 😁
. o O o .
With one fluid motion, Hiccup manoeuvred his car into a free but terrifyingly narrow parking space.
Show-off, Astrid thought to herself, even as she was smiling fondly. Luckily, it was too dark for him to see; in practical tasks like this, her boyfriend was more than confident enough already.
Boyfriend… That word still sounded so strange, at least in regards to Hiccup. Even in her own head.
"So… what's the plan?"
"What plan?" Her hand was already on the handle to open the door, but at the tense tone of his voice, she paused.
Hiccup motioned toward the house in front of them, the Thorston’s home. Through the windows, they could see that most if not all of their friends were already there, getting ready for the twins' monthly meet-up. The times where they’d spent every day together as they’d done in high school or college might be over, but that didn't mean they couldn't stay in touch anymore. Or have ridiculous and silly sleepover parties.
"I mean, what are we, officially?" Hiccup elaborated. "What do we tell them, how do we behave?"
"Oh, that…"
Astrid bit her lip, pondering. After all, it had been only two weeks since her and Hiccup’s years-long friendship had turned into something more. She honestly couldn't be happier about the days filled with joy, about the nights of the previous weekend she’d spent in his arms, or about how his hand in hers felt so incredibly right and the way his easy smile made something in her chest flutter every single time again. And yet...
“I think… I’d rather not tell them,” she eventually replied in a low whisper.
Hiccup audibly exhaled. “All right.” He paused, and Astrid could almost hear the gears in his head turning. “But, uh… Do we really care if they know about us?”
She took a moment to think, shrugging a little insecurely. “I mean… we don’t, I guess,” she said, feeling the heat of a blush on her cheeks. Reflexively, she pushed a strand of hair out of her face to hide it, even though it was too dark for Hiccup to notice anyway. How could she explain how she felt and at the same time reassure him that she wasn’t embarrassed to be with him? “It’s… all so new, you know? For now, I just want to share it with you. Does that make sense?”
Slowly, Hiccup nodded, the outline of his unruly hair moving in the dim light. “I… guess it does.”
He reached for the handle of his door to get out of the car, but Astrid took his hand and pulled him back. She didn’t want him to feel rejected, because that really wasn’t why she wanted to keep their secret a little longer. Awkwardly leaning over to the driver seat, she pressed her lips to his in a sultry kiss. Hiccup grunted in surprise, but only one heartbeat later, his arms wound around her, taking her into one of his embraces she loved so much. Smiling against his lips, Astrid deepened the kiss, opened her mouth to let his tongue slide against her own before she pulled back again.
“We will tell them, tomorrow morning at the lastest, okay? I just want the time to be right. If we tell them right away, they wouldn’t stop teasing and questioning us all evening.”
“Yeah, I see what you mean,” he hummed. “And it’s okay with me, to wait, I mean. You’re right, of course, you are. One of the infamous Thorston parties with drinks and fun and bantering certainly isn’t the best time. Can you imagine the endless ribbing? Although, I bet Snot’s face would be to die for. He’s been bragging about getting you to date him one day since forever.”
Astrid snorted. “As if I’d ever.” She placed another quick peck onto Hiccup’s lips. “I think I choose much better.”
His face lit up, visible even in the dim light. “Alright. Let’s get in there before they start worrying where we are.”
At the door, they were greeted by an already tipsy Ruff – although, with the twins, that wasn't always easy to tell.
"Heeeyyy," she drawled, and pushed glasses filled with colourful cocktails into their hands. "There you are! We thought you two had gotten lost somewhere. Or were making out on Hiccup's backseat." Both Hiccup and Astrid stiffened, but Ruff apparently hadn’t been serious, giggling as if she’d made a great joke. "Come in, come in. We've just been waiting for you before we get started.” Ruff disappeared inside, and Hiccup and Astrid shared a bemused smile before they followed her.
Just good we live so close together, Astrid thought as they took off their coats and shoes and placed their over-night bags by the stairs. That way, nobody wondered why they arrived together; they'd picked each other up ever since Hiccup had gotten his first motorbike so many years ago.
Ruff had been right, everyone else was already there. Snot, Fishlegs, Eret and Dagur, and even Cami had made it in time for once. They were greeted with the usual excitement of not having seen each other in a while, and the first hour or so was spent on eating delivered pizza, drinking cocktails and beer, and filling each other in on their lives. Eret and Dagur had finally started looking into apartments to move in together, Cami had met a girl at a club a few days back and planned to meet her again next week – a good sign after her bad break up three months ago from her noticeably absent ex – and Snot, Fishlegs, and the twins had successfully survived another week of their outdoor experience weeks at the college. When it was Hiccup’s turn, he animatedly talked about the new puppy his parents had gotten a couple of weeks back, even had pictures ready, and Astrid was proud to announce that she’d finally gotten herself a motorcycle.
“Hah!” Dagur exclaimed, clapping once, loudly. “I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist the adrenaline forever. See? We finally rubbed off on her.” He nudged his boyfriend with his elbow.
Eret, however, merely snorted. “You know, Dag… I think it was more Hiccup’s success than ours. With them being friends since forever and all?”
“Yeah,” Astrid quickly jumped in. “Hiccup wouldn’t stop talking about how great motorbikes are, so I got one just to shut up his annoying babbling.”
Eret smirked. “Totally makes sense…”
She wasn’t sure whether she liked the expression on Eret’s face as he looked her and Hiccup over. But he directly changed the topic by downing the rest of his beer and offering to get new drinks, so she didn’t bother wondering further. She did exchange a quick glance with Hiccup, though, just to feel a little more at ease. Was Eret suspecting something?
It felt strange to Astrid to keep this secret, to not tell her friends what was on the forefront of her mind at any given moment. How happy she was that she and Hiccup had made up their mind after so long, how she’d rather move over to the couch or one of the big bean bags where she could cuddle up to him, how she constantly wanted to peck his cheek or his lips, just on a whim.
But at the same time, she really didn’t want to elaborate, not just yet. If they told this news now, the questions would never end. And because she knew her friends and their state of drunkenness, the questions wouldn’t be modest or sensible in any way. And their relationship was just too new, to her and in general, to burden it with this condensed kind of curiosity.
After every piece of pizza was eaten and everyone was at least a little bit tipsy, Ruff and Tuff insisted, as always, on playing a game to pass some time. However, their choice didn’t just let Astrid raised her eyebrows in disbelief.
“Spin the bottle?” Snot asked, incredulously. “Are you serious? What are we, twelve?”
Dagur, totally the grown-up man he was – not – snickered. "If you were twelve, Ret and I would be eighteen already and way too cool to play with toddlers like you."
"Yes, yes, grandpa," Tuff waved Dagur off. "Come, sit down over there and I'll bring you your rheumatic blanket in a minute."
Everyone chuckled at Dagur's grumpy face, until Fishlegs was the first one to sober up again. "Seriously though," he mumbled. "We're not playing the 'seven minutes in Valhalla' version, right?"
To Astrid's relief, Ruff shook her head. "Naw, we're not really twelve, remember? Also, I think there's barely a combination left that we didn’t already have." She looked around, thinking. "Yeah, I at least have been to Valhalla with all of you. No, I've been thinking of something else. I prepared these–" she held up a stack of paper cards, "–with entertaining dares. We pull a card and then spin the bottle to see who's the lucky winner who gets to perform. And I'm telling you, some of these dares…" She trailed off, snickering.
Snorting, Astrid shook her head. At least, there was nothing that would be too embarrassing to perform before her friends. They all know each other for too long to be fazed.
As long as I don't have to kiss Snot or something, she thought, shuddering. It was bad enough that he sat down to her left when they all made themselves comfortable on the cushions lying in a large circle on the ground. Hiccup had a point, after all. Snot still hadn’t stopped trying to hit on her, even though she’d made it clear, more than once, that she wasn’t interested.
She’d managed to have Hiccup sitting at her right, and even though she really wanted to reach over and take his hand or snuggle into his arm, she tried to be content with at least having him close. She just hoped Ruff’s game would provide enough of a distraction to not go crazy with longing.
As it turned out, the game was more than sufficiently distracting. In fact, it was absolutely hilarious and great fun. It started out with something relatively harmless. Not that “Let everyone look through your phone for a minute” couldn’t be embarrassing, but since the bottle had picked Fishlegs as the victim, it wasn’t all that exciting, either.
“Seriously? All you have on your phone are pictures of your dog?”
Snot actually seemed surprised by that fact, which Astrid found almost as amusing as the cute picture of Meatlug sleeping in a highly uncomfortable-looking position.
“Now, I’m mad we didn’t get the chance to look at your phone, Snot,” Cami shot back, smirking. “Although, I bet it’s just full of gross porn.”
“Oh, shut up, Cami,” Snot grumbled. “As if yours would look any different.”
Laughing, Cami stuck her tongue out at Snot, and Astrid couldn’t suppress a grin. If Snot was trying to embarrass Cami then he’d have to do a lot better.
The next dare was honest to the Gods hilarious, making Astrid wonder whether the twins had looked them up somewhere or had come up with them themselves. Generally, she thought they must have looked them up, but ‘having to bend at the waist so that the person was looking through their legs and then run backwards until they were able to tag someone with their butt’ was such a Thorston thing to think of! And, fitting enough, Tuff ended up as the one to do it, stumbling around with everyone laughing as they tried to escape. Being pretty far from sober made it even funnier; Tuff stumbled and landed on his butt at least three times and not colliding with the others was practically impossible as everyone tried to get away from Tuff. And if Astrid enjoyed running into Hiccup and staying in his embrace after they kept each other from falling for a little longer than was necessary? Well, in the general chaos, nobody noticed.
Astrid had to admit that this game idea was definitely one of the best the twins ever had, it was such fun! They got to watch Ruff weeping and wailing her way through five minutes of her begging the person next to her, Dagur, not to leave her for the person on her other side, Cami. The combination alone was hilarious, and Ruff’s acting skills were excellent. By the end, they were all crying with laughter.
They got to watch Cami perform a pole dance without a pole, which she managed surprisingly well, and then Dagur doing a belly dance ‘as if his life depended on it’. As expected, he went all out, earning himself cheering and applause from everyone, and Astrid wouldn’t have been surprised if a similar performance might get repeated in Eret’s and Dagur’s bedroom on another day.
Hiccup got off easily, having to speak in an accent for the following five rounds. Not a difficult challenge, given how well he was able to imitate his father and uncle, but still always entertaining. Almost as entertaining as Eret serenading him – specifically the person to his right. Just like with Dagur, subtlety wasn’t in Eret’s nature, so he went all out, using his best singing voice, falling to his knees, and arms gesturing wildly. It was a fantastic spectacle to watch.
Astrid herself was more than content with her first dare, doing as many push-ups as she could – and then one more. 43 wasn’t exactly a record number for her, but still good enough to show off a little. Fishlegs and Snot were visibly impressed, the twins miming to be bored to death, and Eret and Dagur who were gym-buffs just like her cheered her on right through to the end. The best reaction was certainly Hiccup’s though, his eyes dazed as she stood up again. Other men she’d dated had been intimidated by her strength, but with Hiccup, it was the opposite. He loved how strong she was, had even admitted that it turned him on, and seeing how it affected him now made her blush more than anything else. Gods, he was just perfect, accepting and even loving her just the way she was.
Snot had less luck with his first dare, relatively speaking. To Astrid, it would have been nothing, but ‘posting an embarrassing picture to your social media account’ was clearly something Snot loathed. She half expected him to take the post down again as soon as he could, but the twins would make sure that it never truly vanished.
They played several rounds with more dares to follow, like opening a bag of chips with nothing but your mouth – Tuff excelled! – and picking someone from the group to give you a spanking. Poor Fishlegs was probably one of the few, if not the only one, who had not wanted that dare, but Astrid assumed that Cami went gentle on her childhood friend. Snot did a surprisingly decent job at doing a magic trick, and Eret had to run around the house three times with a handful of ice cubes shoved down his underwear. A rather unpleasant experience, if his high-pitched yelps and unashamed curses were anything to go by.
“Oh, oh, oh, finally!” Ruff sing-songed when she picked another of her cards, a far-too-innocent grin on her face. “I’ve been waiting for this one! Okay, listen up. Snot, put that glass down, I need you all to be sober enough to get this joke.”
As if Snot drinking one more mouthful would change anything, Astrid thought giddily, clearly not unaffected by the alcohol herself. At least the twins had accepted not to mix too much alcohol into their drinks during these parties, or else nobody would be conscious anymore by now.
“Okay, ready?” Ruff looked around until she had everyone’s attention. “So, here’s what the next vict– erm, participant has to do. Hiccup in between every word for the next five rounds.” She looked around, grinning victoriously.
There was a moment or three of silence before snickering could be heard from all over the room. Oh, how they were all acting like the grown-ups they were supposed to be – not!
Hiccup groaned loudly, his head falling back against the wall behind him with an audible thump! “Seriously? We’re down to nickname jokes again?”
“We never left that level, H,” Tuff replied with clear satisfaction in his voice.
“Oh, come on,” Ruff giggled. “You’ve got to admit, it’s awesome! I just had to include this one when I found it!”
“So, do I get this right?” Dagur threw in, a mischievous grin on his face. “I have to do Hiccup between every word I say? This will be a looong game!” He gestured at the bottle between them. “But okay, I can do that! Spin that thing. I’m so ready for this dare!”
Caught somewhere between exasperation and fits of laughing, Hiccup groaned, “Oh, Gods…”
Astrid bit her lip at that sound. She had to keep herself from blurting out an overly-excited ‘Me too!’. Tipsy as she was, she couldn’t help her thoughts regularly wandering to her right, to Hiccup and to all the things she wanted to do with him to draw more of those groans out of him. But even just putting her hand in his for the tiniest of skin-to-skin contact would draw more attention than they’d agreed upon. So instead, she looked at Dagur, eyebrows raised and with the appropriate amount of amusement on her face.
“You know, Dag,” Eret deadpanned. “Given how much you talk, you’d both die of exhaustion.” There wasn’t the slightest hint of jealousy in his words, just dry amusement and a certain glint in his eyes. Given the boys’ open and relaxed attitude toward their relationship, Eret probably wouldn’t mind watching such a spectacle. “But if you want, I volunteer in case you want to practise first. Though maybe not today.”
Dagur pouted. “Spoilsports...” He took the bottle and gave it a good spin, then actually groaned in disappointment when the top didn’t point at him… but at Snot instead.
All eyes were on him, expectantly waiting for his reaction, but Snot just rolled his eyes. “Yeah, – hic! – I – hic! – won’t – hic! – do – hic! – my – hic! – cousin!”
Everyone burst out laughing and the game continued, with a noticeably quiet Snot for a few minutes.
Another highlight of the evening was certainly Tuff acting like a chicken for a solid ten minutes, and Ruff got off easily by letting her brother shave her legs; everyone knew it wasn’t the first time he did that.
“Okay, the next one can go two ways,” Ruff announced, frowning at the card in her hand. “‘Transfer an ice cube from the mouth of one of the persons next to you to your own.’ Now, the obvious way is a kiss, but we’ve done that so often, it’s getting boring. So I want to suggest a funnier way. One has to spit the ice cube out in a high arc and the other has to catch it with their mouth. Which method you use is up to you.”
“Ew, isn’t that a bit gross?” Fishlegs complained.
Cami snorted. “Not grosser than other things we’ve done. Remember that one time we tried to make the most horrid concoctions to drink we could imagine? Now, that was gross!”
“Uh, don’t remind me.” He shuddered at the memory, and Astrid really couldn’t blame him.
Snot leaned over to her. “I’d still choose the kiss,” he whispered, winking at her.
It made her roll her eyes, made her want to shove it in his face that the only one of those present – no, the only one in general! – she wanted to kiss was Hiccup. Hiccup had been right, seeing Snot’s reaction would be hilarious.
“Okay, on we go,” Ruff announced, spinning the bottle with a flourish. “Here’s hoping to see some ice cubes fly around the room now.”
Only halfway interested in flying ice cubes, Astrid reached for her cocktail standing on a low sideboard behind her. Her head was buzzing pleasantly, and she really rather wanted to keep it that way. She only started to pay attention to the game again when Snot next to her leaned forward.
“Ah, yes!” he exclaimed. “That’s it, slow down, little bottle. I’m right here. Yeah, that’s right, and now stop. No, don’t go further, I’m here, no, wait…”
Astrid stiffened, her eyes on the slowly spinning bottle now, too. Please, don’t pick Snot!, she thought desperately. He would pick her as a partner, that much was clear, and she really did not want that! He could be a great friend, but she wished he'd get rid of his fixation about them dating one day.
"Ahh, so close…" Snot whined as the bottle spun past him and got to a halt just a few moments later.
He slumped back into his bean bag, and Astrid relaxed as well, sighing in relief. Danger averted, for now at least. Her good mood didn't last long, though; only until she noticed that everyone's eyes were lingering on her.
"Well?" Ruff asked, grinning. "Who and how is it going to be?"
Of course!
Astrid groaned inwardly. The bottle spinning past Snot meant that it had landed on her. Somehow, her alcohol-addled brain hadn't made that connection right away.
Grimacing, she accepted the small cooling tank with the ice cube. And now? One of the persons next to her meant either Snot or Hiccup. Well, at least that was a choice easily made. She turned to her right.
"Eh, what? Oh, come on, babe. You can't be serious! Him? Really?"
But Astrid studiously ignoring Snot's complaints behind her as she turned to Hiccup as her partner. Snot had never mattered, now even less than ever before. But what was she supposed to do now?
It should be an easy question, she mused. She wasn't in the mood – or sensible state of balance – for silly acrobatics like catching a flying cube with her mouth. And she really wanted to kiss Hiccup! The question was just… would she be able to hold back and be content with an awkward dare-kiss between friends?
When her eyes found his, she found the same question written there, his cheeks endearingly flushed. The others would assume he was embarrassed, having known about his crush on her for ages when he'd only confessed it to her a couple of weeks ago. But that was good, wasn't it? When they wouldn't expect anything?
She took one smaller ice cube from the tank, her mind whirling. All evening, it had felt weird not to acknowledge their relationship to the people that mattered most to them. But now? Now, it wasn't just about not telling them. It was about actively lying to fool them. And for what? To keep their feelings a secret? As if they were something embarrassing, something dirty or forbidden, something to be ashamed of?
That didn't feel right!
Slowly, her eyes wandered from the cube in her hand to Hiccup's again, and she didn't even need to say or do anything. Hiccup had come to the same conclusion as she had; she could see it in his eyes, clear as crystal.
Without ever looking away from him, she crawled to where Hiccup was sitting and straddled his lap, ignoring the sounds of surprise from their friends. His hands landed on her hips to steady her, the gesture natural and sure. Nothing like it had been in the beginning when he'd been shy and careful. It had been sweet then, but she preferred him like this; bolt, confident, not afraid of her reaction.
She held her gaze locked to his intense eyes, even as she lifted her hand and he obediently opened his mouth to let her place the ice cube on his tongue. However, all obedience was gone a second later and got replaced by mischief when he closed his mouth again and tilted his head in a clear 'come and get it!' motion.
Smirking, she took the challenge. She was dimly aware of the others gaping, but the moment her lips touched his, she couldn’t care less about them. In an instant, they were lost in their own little bubble, just she and Hiccup giving in to the demanding longing that had built itself up all night.
It started as a relatively chaste kiss, just her lips brushing over his. Astrid hummed at the contact, having missed it dearly over the past few hours. Her hands rose to cradle his jaw and his neck, just feeling the heat of his skin and the pleasant scratch of his stubbles, while his were still on her hips, reflexively pulling her closer. His warmth seeped into her even through their clothes, his chest against her own, his legs beneath her. It felt wonderful, and she wouldn’t have minded staying like this forever.
However, she did remember Hiccup’s challenge, the ice in his mouth. Her tongue poked out, gliding over his lips before pushing to demand access. With a rumbling moan from deep within his chest, Hiccup complied. The cold of the ice made her shiver, but not in a bad way. His hands glided up her back, one hauling her closer as the other wandered on to caress her side, her breast. The memory of their watching friends flickered up in Astrid's mind, but only for a heartbeat before it was gone again, pushed aside by her desire to be close to him.
Their kiss became deeper as she tried to somehow get a hold onto the ice. Hiccup was good at pushing it around, always out of reach, and it left their tongues whirling around inside his mouth. Without her help, her body followed, shifting in Hiccup's lap and grinding down, seeking, wanting more.
She couldn't say for how long they made out like this. Endlessly. Not long enough. By the time Astrid pulled back, the ice cube she held victoriously between her teeth was barely more than a tiny shard, only moments away from melting completely.
"Ha! I won!" she stated, grinning.
Chuckling, Hiccup shook his head. "You know, Milady,  it was never about winning, right? Besides, I don't feel like I've lost, either."
He leaned in for another kiss, just a quick peck on her lips but it was enough to make her hum pleasantly.
"Mmmh, very true…"
"Okay, did I miss a memo? What just happened?"
Tuff's disbelieving exclamation made the bubble abound them burst. Sheepishly, Astrid turned in Hiccup's lap to look at their friends. Their faces showed expressions of surprise and shock in varying degrees, a little smugness mixed into it in Cami's and Eret's case.
"Uh, well… the thing is–"
Hiccup began, and Astrid went on.
"–We might have something else to tell you."
