The voices behind the clouds have compelled me to make this thing. I was struck this episode by the culmination of events that were forecasted since the beginning of the season. A Train crash in slow motion feels like the wrong allusion. We can see the Wheel of Fate spinning above Kumiko, we can see the signs and the writing on the wall. It feels like to some extent she knows this too, every time she affirms her position I think it dawns on her more and more the inventible result of her action. For her there's no other choice to be made, anything but encouraging Mayu to play would be an affront to her principals and turn back on her history. The result of the audition feels Fated, and only Kumiko and Mayu seem aware of it. The vibe it gave me was very much that of a prisoner walking down to the chair. Song is Walking Spanish by Tom Waits.

So this is it folks. One last episode of Hibike Euphonium.. can you believe it.. everything we’ve built up to for a decade has led to this next episode.

Just a gut wrenching episode. It hurts so damn much just like my baby Kumiko said.. but I have to give credit to the author for not going the traditional route and having the heroine win in the end. This whole season was about establishing a meritocracy where the best players are playing.

If you want something you’ve never had before, you have to be prepared to do things you’ve never done before and sadly Kumiko was a casualty of that. If it’s what it takes for Kitauji to win gold, I think it’ll be worth it in the end, but man.. seeing Kumiko and Reina breakdown like that.. one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking scenes kyoani have ever made and a perfect callback to season 1 where they met in that same spot.

The Kanade scene broke me too 💔 fuck I wanted them to be able to play together so bad. Life is so cruel and sometimes we just don’t get the things we want or deserve..

I’m glad we at least finally got some sort of mutual understanding between Mayu and Kumiko. This should’ve put to bed any of the concerns people had about Mayu being vindictive or wanting to break Kumiko down. Having that fallout with her friend over the music club makes everything make more sense. She’s already been established as a person who doesn’t want to offend anyone at any costs as well, she didn’t even wanna choose a drink at the beach for fear of taking something someone else wanted, so her acting that way was in line with her character.

Just can’t believe it’s all over next week. Kumiko future, nationals.. all comes to a head.. fuck. OVA or something please

Hibike Euphonium s3 ep12

I can't believe they did that. (spoilers)

I honestly thought Reina just picked whoever she thought was Kumiko instead of whoever she thought was better but that'd be putting Kumiko above the band as a whole. It doesn't fit with her character as we know her.

Damn, she was mad at Kumiko for kinda botching it and not being better, but I think it would have made her a lot more interesting (although maybe more selfish) if she had abandoned her "special" or "perfect" philosophy or whatever and just gave in one time. If she bent the rules of her philosophy just for Kumiko. Would have made them more special to each other but whatever.

I really enjoyed this episode and shed a few tears! Good job KyoAni, looking forward to the next one.

i dedicate photoseth for Hibike Euphonium 3 beacuse when I saw the opening video of hibike euphonium I was moved, it's nice to see that hibike doesn't forget the companions from previous seasons, hibike doesn't forget all those moments full of unique emotions, thank you so much hibike euphonium for being so great as an anime

[...] since it’s a work I’d been working on for ten years, I felt a strong sense of desolation, as if one of my own worlds had disappeared. Therefore, I thought that it would have been nice if I could create some sort of continuity between the work and reality, even a small one, so the epilogues brings us to the Uji of the present day. — What do you mean? Kumiko’s third year of high school is set in 2017, but the epilogue of the anime depicts present day (2024) Uji. By doing so, I hoped it would make it feel like Kumiko and the others are living in this same world we live in. This work already featured a truthful depiction of Uji, but we scouted each location again and reflected the changes in the scenery of the epilogue. Kumiko’s favorite bench has been remodeled, the JR railways have been double-tacked, the factory chimney visible from the Uji Bridge is now just one, the torii gates at Uji Shrine have been replaced with metal ones… many minor things have changed. And also Tuba-kun is extremely worn out (laughs). I don’t know how much of it was noticed, but a lot of thought was put into it.

So anyways, while I was going through and looking for clips I notice some of the visual story telling beats this episode was doing and thought it'd be fun to collect some here. Spoilers for S308 if you haven't seen it yet. Gathering clouds

The episode basically opens with these shots, the idea here is very much that of gathering clouds. They symbolize the gathering storm that is not only the results of the audition but what follows that as well. The cloud motif is something that is touched on as the episode progresses, and gets combined with another visual motif.

In this shot the camera changes focus from the spider's web to the clouds looming in the background. This shot sets up another later on, but itself is a reference to a visual motif used on the earlier seasons. The spider web representing a trap of sorts. We see that trap get combined with the symbology of the gathering clouds, linking it to the auditions.

The next few are from the morning of the auditions, before they occur, we see cloudless skies. Maybe there supposed to indicate a feeling that worse has come to pass, that the clouds broke before the storm could fully form. Maybe hope that Kumiko has that the previous omens were just falsehoods.

But of course this isn't the case. Not only are the clouds back, a rejection of the notion of clear skies communicated prior, a butterfly is now trapped in that spiders web. Its a pay off for the earlier shot and represents Kumiko fully falling to that trap. Being the last shot in the episode its surely an ominous portent of things to come!
