i said this on our twitter but i could go on an entire essay-length rant about how the instrument choices for kurapika's 2011 character theme (hi ni moeru hitomi) are absolutely genius

the gentle intro of the piano broken by the pipe organ and electric guitar, the way the different instruments all flow together like a dance, the lighter string instruments during the chorus. everything about it rahgrgahgshrghdngagshggah

Eyes Burning Scarlet (Hi ni Moeru Hitomi): Lyricist's Notes

This is my first time writing full translyrics for a song and posting them online. It’s totally new for me, and although I am still a novice I wanted to try this because Kurapika is my favorite character in HxH and I was shocked that his character song doesn’t have English translyrics yet. I wanted to give this a shot, with the thought of maintaining the noble red color of the song in mind. 

What I found most difficult to maintain was the sense of conjugation in the chorus. For example, in the first chorus the last phrase ends in the volitional form. However, my translation resembles the causative form in Japanese. Since I had to work around syllable counts for the translyrics I relied on Kurapika’s characterization to inform the lyrics when I couldn’t maintain fidelity. Here, I passed the “volition” from Kurapika to his ancestors, since they are the driving force of his resolve throughout the series. Other than that, the other specific thing I struggled with was translating the iconic “Akaku” from the chorus. The meaning is quite clear (it’s simply “red”) but the English word does not lend itself to those three repeated beats. I toyed with the idea of using other red words (“vermillion” works exceptionally well) but in the end I didn’t want to betray the symbolism of scarlet for Kurapika’s character.
