WIP Wednesday
Look it’s almost midnight and I haven’t seen a WIP Wednesday on my dash yet so either I missed something or I am kicking it off for once because I need to share Baz being a Klainer on main! Yeehaw!
But first... I... love Rosemary, so of course it’s time for some e pare stella stuff with Rosemary being wholesome.
Rosemary’s spelled put. I know she loves watching me cook, but I wouldn’t feel safe with her running around in a place with heat sources and sharp objects. Still, I make sure that she knows that I know that she’s watching. I always do. I love cooking with Rosemary.
I use my trusty sword to slice the scallops paper thin and she lets out a delighted noise. I’ve given her some leftover tomatoes to eat and she’s tearing through them while watching me. We should give her one of those toy kitchens for her birthday.
“Can I have?” she points towards the sword.
Or a toy sword.
“You know the answer’s no, Rosemary.”
She still tries every time. Sorry Anna, but Rosemary is definitely getting the sword one day. She can continue my weird tradition of cooking with a magickal ancestral sword.
“Un giorno sarà tua, little puff.” I continue cooking with her cheering me on and every now and then I let her taste. She’s the best food critic, since she likes everything that I make.
And now, it’s time for Basilton Grimm-Pitch being a huge Klainer. This Glee/CO crossover is becoming some sort of homage to my time in the Glee fandom. I’ll put it under the cut. If you also lived through the live airing of Glee and you want me to add a fandom moment, let me know!
Simon Snow is explaining Klaine to me.
We’re sitting on our respective beds and Snow’s talking about Glee and its characters and about the importance of the show. It’s all very funny to me. Snow doesn’t have anything new to tell me. He’s only recently started the show and he hasn’t seen further than Special Education. He wasn’t there when the show aired.
Snow wasn’t there when the twelve seconds long kiss changed the world.
Snow didn’t have a mental breakdown when it turned out that Blaine’s a junior.
Snow doesn’t know the Jim Cantiello Gleecap songs by heart.
Snow didn’t make hundred puppet accounts on Twitter to follow Ryan Murphy, begging him to release the goddamn Box Scene. (Magic really helped me out with that one. I think I had 500 accounts at one point, all with usernames belittling RIB for their actions.)
Snow didn’t read Darren Criss’s passionate Facebook post before The Break Up, so he didn’t have to worry about Blaine possibly being written out.
Snow didn’t refresh a dank Brazilian spoilers page on a daily basis.
Snow didn’t have to go through the emotional rollercoaster that is the weird proposal storyline.
Snow didn’t wake up in the middle of the night to watch Klaine get married.
And so on. Snow’s explaining basic things to me and I am barely listening, because I am sudden hit by a wave of nostalgia. Glee only ended a year ago (yes, I cried) and I thought I was going to move on, but right now I am actually in the Glee universe, Kurt and Blaine just left our room, and Snow’s acting like some sort of Glee guru.

Eva sat in the conference room, trying hard not to fidget.  Javier and Steve were to her left, and there was a projector sitting behind the table.  None of them knew why they were sitting there. None of them knew when the meeting would start. All that they were told was that they were supposed to be sitting in that room by nine am that day. No exceptions.
The air kicked on, filling the room with a dull drone. Eva grabbed her pen and held it in her palm, using her thumb to slide the cap up and down along the length of it. She wanted to get up and take a lap around the room to excise some of the nervous energy she felt.
Javier lit a cigarette, sinking down lower into his chair, looking annoyed, “How long’ve we been sitting here?”
Steve looked at his watch, “About twenty minutes.”
“Fuck me,” Javier groaned, rubbing his eye, “I got about a thousand pages of paperwork that need to get done and we’re sitting here with our thumbs up our asses.”
She had to agree. She’d gotten a little behind with reading through case files. Although she was used to redacted information, she wasn’t used to whole sections of them being completely missing.  As she moved through the most recent information, that was occurring more and more often. She thought she’d gotten the mole over two months ago, but now… there had to be more than one.
The door opened and Vanessa walked in. Eva inhaled deeply, her grip on the pen tightening until she heard the plastic crack. Jaw clenched, she sat up and prepared herself for the inevitable. Unable to help it, she glanced at the two agents she’d worked with so closely, already mourning the friendship they’d started to develop. She wondered if Connie would be calling to cancel their work out tonight.
Blinking, she turned her attention to the woman who signed her paychecks.
“Hello, thank you for waiting. I’m Vanessa Arnold.”
A tall, stately woman, dressed in a crisp suit, Vanessa looked at them with a critical gaze. She addressed each of them in turn, welcoming them to the meeting.  Eva’s eyes narrowed as Vanessa sorted the stack of files in front of her. She knew those files—well worn over the years, and slowly growing.
“I am here,” she announced, her expression business placid, “Because I’ve heard some disturbing information and I would like to give you the opportunity to address it.”
Next to her, Javier stubbed out his cigarette, “What kind of information?”
Vanessa smiled, it was not a nice smile, “It has been reported to the States that you are engaging in some inappropriate behavior.”
Javier and Steve looked at each other, a whole conversation passing between them that Eva wasn’t sure she could decipher.  Steve, who was sitting next to her, put his elbows on the table, resting his head on his hands.  Javier stayed where he was, but she could feel the heat of the glare he leveled at Vanessa.
“Now, we deal with some very serious things, and sometimes that wears us down.”  Standing, Vanessa circled the conference table, hand skimming over the chairs. “Sometimes, that leads us to forget our boundaries and the expectations of the DEA for its agents.”
Eva’s gaze followed Vanessa as she sauntered towards them, pace excruciatingly slow.  She knew where this was going, had attended this meeting at least once in every location she’d been sent to, usually at about the six month mark. And yet, it still hurt. Vanessa knew how to make it hurt.
Javier cleared his throat, “With all due respect, Ms. Arnold, can you get to the point?”
There was that ugly smile again, “Absolutely. I’ve received reports that you and Agent Murphy are participating in social events with Mrs. Moore. Going out to bars, eating lunch together—Agent Murphy, your wife has been attending classes at the gym with Mrs. Moore, has she not?”
Steve’s mouth thinned, “She has. There aren’t many Americans in this country, least of all anyone who might be able to commiserate about life in close quarters with the DEA.”
Vanessa cast him a condescending look, “Still, it doesn’t exactly put you in a positive light, does it?”
Eva could feel the wheels of Steve’s mind turning as he processed what she’d said.  He flicked his fingers out in a sharp motion before curling them into his palms, “I don’t understand. Eva is a contract consultant, paid by the DEA to work with us. How is associating with her outside of work a negative?”
Here we go.
Vanessa stepped back and flicked off the lights, then moved to the projector and turned it on, “Mrs. Moore is generally reticent to talk about it, but I feel its important for you to know who you are working with.”
The projector clicked and Eva’s mug shot flashed onto the wall opposite the group. She closed her eyes, working to control her breathing.  She’d been released into police custody right out of the hospital. Her arm was still in a cast, her face heavily swollen and bruised. The picture was not flattering.
“Mrs. Moore was charged and convicted of the murder of her husband a few years prior to coming to work for us.”
Another click. Her husband’s picture, his professional photo, came up. Josh was impeccably groomed, smile wide and white, eyes clear and sparkling. She bit the inside of her cheek, stunned that she could still feel such hatred towards a person no longer living.
“This is Joshua Moore. A prominent doctor and businessman out of Louisiana. His practice was located just outside of New Orleans.  He was most well known for donating large amounts to charities across the state.”
For the tax write off. And, to get the votes of the city councils.
Click. Their wedding picture. Eva felt bile rise in her throat. Fourteen years old, looking like a baby next to a twenty five year old who’d just started working for the local hospital. Her mother had picked out her dress—a frilly, lace encrusted thing that was a touch too long.  She remembered how much her feet hurt from walking in the heels she needed to wear to keep the thing from dragging too much down the aisle.  Standing at the altar had been excruciating enough that she’d stumbled over her vows.
“By all accounts, Mrs. Moore and her husband had a passionate relationship.”
Passionate is one way to put it.
In the beginning, she’d fought him when she thought he was being unfair. He’d scream, punch doors, throw things, eventually things devolved into physical beatings.  It only took about a year for her to stop fighting and just do what he wanted. It was easier that way. Soon enough, he figured out how good she was at hiding things—money, product, herself—and he let her in on the family business.
Click. Their blood covered carpet with his outline marked in tape.
“One night, things got out of hand. Mr. Moore unfortunately lost his life at the hands of his wife.”
God, could she be a little less dramatic? Her voice had lowered down to a soft, sweet sound that grated on every nerve Eva had.  She felt her mouth lift in a sneer before she could check the motion. Sniffing, she relaxed the muscles of her face, looking forward at the picture dispassionately.
Click. The trail of blood leading from the living room out the back door.
“When police arrived on the scene, Mr. Moore was found in the back yard, on fire.  Autopsy reports state that he was set aflame post mortem. His cause of death was confirmed as blunt force trauma to the skull.”
Click. Her husband’s dead body, skin black and burned down to bone, laying atop a cart. Click. A close up of his face, half the skull missing. In bottom right corner, there was a little ‘R’ marked in what looked to be black permanent marker. This was the only new aspect of the photos.  Every location. Every six months. Every photo. She’d seen them over and over and had them memorized. It didn’t seem possible that this little song and dance could still make her angry, but it did.  She was tired of paying for a justifiable action she’d taken to save her own life.
Vanessa left the last photo up, moving to stand before them, one hand slipping into the pocket of her slacks.  Eva kept her gaze steady, ready to take what would come next, the words that she’d heard for many years.
“Gentleman, you’re sitting next to a cold blooded murder, a person who took a life that was privileged and beat it to death with a fire extinguisher. Think about what kind of person could do that to someone they loved. This about who she would have to be to drag a dead body out of her house and set it on fire. Think about how associating with that kind of person reflects on you and your careers.”
The silence that followed was familiar and tense. Both men looking at Vanessa—Javier gently tapping his forefinger on the table, Steve with his head on his hands.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed, but she kept smiling, “I’m going to let you keep thinking on that. Thank you for coming in. Have a nice day.”
And then she as striding out, her heels clicking on the tile. Eva watched her go, the door closing gently behind her. Eva just caught the face of that department head she’d nearly forgotten about as he approached Vanessa in the hall. She let the sneer form on her mouth, knowing that the rumor mill would start almost immediately.
The air in the room felt oppressive, the darkness only adding more pressure.  Eva pushed a breath through her nose, scratching at the skin above her eyebrow as she tried to think of something to say.
Javier spoke for her, “What a load of bullshit.”
She couldn’t help it. She laughed. It was, indeed, a load of bullshit. She’d never had someone put it so succinctly so quickly following the presentation.
Steve leaned back in his seat, smashing the power button on the projector. It turned off with the groaning hiss of an air fan, leaving the room completely dark. Eva took the opportunity to swallow back the old feelings that had been drudged up in the last ten minutes.  Ten minutes. That’s all it took for her to feel like shit again. She fucking hated Vanessa.
Javier stood up and flicked on the lights, returning to his seat and sitting heavily. He pulled his cigarettes from his pocket and lit one, offering the pack to Steve, who took it. Eva folded her hands over her chest and waited for someone to speak.
Steve tapped off ash into a faceted glass tray, “So that’s why you told us about it early on.”
“That’s why I told you about it early on,” Eva confirmed with a nod.
Javier blew out a lungful of smoke, “She do this often?”
“Yeah.”
“How often?”
“Every time, with every team.”
He nodded, leaning his forearms on the table, “You notice she left your files.”
“Yep,” Eva bit out.
It was a perfect strategy. If she hadn’t been up front about her husband, it would be impossible for anyone to ignore the fact that the whole story, in black and white, was sitting right there.
Steve reached out and placed his hand next to her on the tabletop, “You want us to read through it.”
She shrugged, “You can, if you want. Its a nicely worded story. Not too flattering to me, of course.”
They looked at each other for a few seconds, another private conversation passing between them. She kept her expression neutral, not wanting to sway them one way or another.
Steve threw the butt of his cigarette into the tray, “Connie and I are having a pool party next weekend.  You want to come? Carrillo, too.”
Eva felt her jaw drop, didn’t bother to conceal her shock, “You want me to come to a party.”
“Yeah,” he said, his mouth curling into a smile, “Maybe you can convince Javi, here, to put on a swim suit.”
“I wear swim trunks,” Javier cut in with mock anger.
Steve rolled his eyes, “Only because Connie won’t let you come if you’re not wearing appropriate attire.” Then, to Eva, “You got a suit?”
She nodded, “I do.”
“Good, bring a bottle of booze, and you’re set.”
Eva sat there, staring at him, her mouth open. It was one thing for her to tell them what she’d done. It was another thing to come face to face with pictures of her husband’s mutilated body and react with, what? Nonchalance?
Steve leaned towards her, “Connie wouldn’t be alive if you hadn’t gotten her out of that restaurant.  I don’t give a shit what you did to that guy.  What you did, here? That’s what counts.”
She looked between them. Javier wasn’t talking, but he nodded as Steve spoke, offering silent support. Eva felt her chest constrict with a soft affection for them both. The relief was a physical thing, exhaling with her next breath.
“Thank you.”
Steve shrugged, “Don’t mention it. Vodka—bring a bottle. Wear your suit.”
As it turned out, Connie did not cancel their work out that night. She met Eva outside the gym at their regular time, looking at her like a friend. Eva had to cough into her hand to hide the surprised little shriek that wanted to burst out of her when the woman came into view.
They spent the hour sweating and huffing through a one challenging set after another, the sound of the instructor’s voice coaching them through the movements. Afterwards, Eva slumped on the bench, tossing back water and toweling off her face.
“That was fun,” Connie commented from her spot next to her.
Eva sent her a sidelong glance, “Fun is not the word I would use.”
Fun was sitting at a bar, drinking and hollering at the band. Fun was watching a ball game or shopping for new clothes. What they had just done was hard work—muscle burning, lung searing, skin sizzling hard work. Still, Eva enjoyed it, needed the release of endorphins.
“You know, one of the things I look forward to when I get back to the states is flaunting my newly hot body when I see those skinny bitches at my high school reunion.”
Eva laughed, “You’ll be the talk of the party—look at those biceps.”
Connie flexed, smiling wide, “Gotta get me one of those strapless, backless dresses, just to show off.”
“Oh, Steve’ll love that.”
“He would,” Connie said with a coy little tilt of her shoulders. “He tell you about the party?”
Eva nodded, “Yeah, I’ve been tasked with bringing a bottle of vodka.”
“And wearing a suit,” Connie asserted, pointing at Eva.
“I have one, don’t worry.”
“I want everyone dressed for the occasion, no office wear allowed.”
“Ah, damn, I’ll have to leave my pencil skirt at home.”
Connie rolled her eyes, “I’m so glad I get to wear scrubs. My feet still hurt at the end of the day, but at least its not from wearing heels.”
Eva took another long swig, “Yeah, but you do have to be one your feet all day. At least I get to sit down.”
“Pros and cons.”
Eva nodded, “Agreed. Pros and cons.”
“So, are you ever going to tell me what’s going on with you and Carrillo? Steve says you’ve been seeing him.”
Eva set down the water bottle. She’d been wondering, herself, when Connie was going to bring it up. Despite their weekly gym excursions, she hadn’t pushed. Eva was grateful—she didn’t really know how she’d characterize her relationship with the man. They weren’t...like, boyfriend and girlfriend. At least, not how she’d known the concept back before she’d been married. Companions, maybe. Friends, definitely. Friends who slept together. Friends with benefits? That felt too trivializing.
“We’ve gone out a few times,” Eva edged, standing and motioning for Connie to follow.
They walked towards the bathrooms, the humidity spiking from the showers as they passed through the doors.
“And?”
Eva opened her locker and pulled out her gym back, rustling around for her change of clothes, “And...I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
Sighing, Eva stood up and looked at Connie, “I don’t. Not really. I’m only on assignment here for another six months or so. I like him. I like spending time with him. I don’t know where I am from there.”
Connie fixed her with a level look, “You don’t want to get into anything serious because you think you’re leaving in six months.”
Eva thought about it,“Yes.”
“But, you like him enough that you’re willing to go out with him even though it might end sooner rather than later.”
Eva thought again, “Yes.”
She gave a little bob of her head, “That’s fair. Steve says he’s pretty intense.”
Eva didn’t have to think about that one, “Yes.”
“Is that all you’re going to say?”
Eva’s face scrunched, “You want me to say more?”
“Yes, for God’s sake!” Connie burst out, her hands flying in the air, “I want details.”
Eva laughed, “Let me get cleaned up and then we can talk details.”
Connie’s eyes narrowed, “Don’t think I’m going to forget. We’re going to the bar and you’re going to tell me everything.”
They did, indeed, go to the bar, although Eva didn’t really tell Connie everything.  She talked about their dates, how he’d been polite and conscientious, how she felt when they kissed, and that she hadn’t yet spent the night at his place but she wanted to.
“You know, when I met him, I thought he was terrifying,” Connie commented as she sipped a gin and tonic.
Eva lifted a brow, “Why?”
Thinking for a moment, Connie settled on, “He was just so serious. Like, really, really serious.”
Eva could get that. The man could write a book on taking things seriously. Serious was in his blood. But, she’d seen him soft and sweet, too. She’d seen his dimples as he smiled. Seen his laugh. There was more to him than he showed to the world, more than a hard, scary man. It made her warm inside to think that she got to see that side of him.
“Shame that you don’t think it’ll last,” Connie said, a leading tone in her voice.
Eva brought her beer to her lips, “I have to go home sometime.”
“Where is home, exactly?”
The question caught Eva off guard. She realized that she didn’t exactly know. For a long time, Louisiana was home, and then Texas, and then a host of assignments. Now, it was Colombia. She’d been traveling for so long that she couldn’t root herself down anywhere. She didn’t even know if she wanted to. Her contract end date had been so far away for so long that Eva had never taken the time to work out what she would do afterward. Her record would be cleared, she would no longer be a felon. She would have years of work experience and a tidy little savings.
The possibilities were so numerous that Eva found herself unable to really settle on any one thing that she wanted—except, that wasn’t exactly true. Her heart, down deep, wanted what she might actually be able to have. A too serious, dimple-cheeked man who smelled like tobacco and vetiver.
Connie was looking at her, waiting for her answer. Eva just shrugged and ordered another round of drinks.

Prologue
Chapter 1 - The Informant
'Liliana' the file said. I was tucked away in the locked bottom drawer of his old desk, the one he hadn't even had time to clear out when they'd sent him away. To be fair, Javier had only known to look because Murphy had called him to tell him about this informant. It sounded too good to be true. An informant coming to them of their own accord, ready to spill valuable inside secrets of the Calí cartel, and they didn't even want payment? One would be forgiven, in their line of work, to smell a trap. But Murphy had vouched for this one, and he trusted Murphy, knew that his partner (former partner) did his homework with due diligence. That, and the first batch of intel Murphy had brought back from their first few meetings had already proven invaluable.
There was apparently only one hiccup, and it was that the informant refused to talk to any agents other than him or Murphy. It had even led to Steve having to postpone his return to the States for almost two months, until it was clear that Javier would return to Colombia. Fair enough, he'd need to make up his own mind about them anyway. He collected the file and tucked it into the box that held all the stuff he'd cleared out of the desk, since he would now officially be moving a an office of his own.
Upon arriving in said office, he kicked the door closed and sat, lighting a cigarette and reaching for the file. As thin as it was, it still took him almost an hour to work through it, though half of the time was spent deciphering Murphy's chicken scratch mess of annotations. The rest was spent on making his own. After checking the time, Javier fetched himself a cup of the same old tar brew that passed for coffee here, lit another cigarette, and dialled Steve's new office number in Miami.
"Murphy."
"Alright, I've read the file." Javier started without preamble. Perhaps that was a bit short. He grimaced, then added, "About the informant. Liliana."
"Yeah, I figured." Steve exhaled probably puffing away at his own nicotine habit. Javier meant to quit, but kept pushing it off. The intent was all there was to it, at this stage. "So what're you calling me for, big boss?"
Javier elected to ignore the taunt, knowing it was friendly.
"You've met her. Is she legit?"
"Why, you smelling a trap?"
Pathological mistrust was a feature one acquired while on this job. Those who didn't ended up dead. Those who did would still end up dead, just later and more jaded. Either way you'd get a lot of other people killed on the way. "Just making sure."
They spent the next half hour and a bit going over the file together, comparing notes, catching up, thinking aloud - all of which were much easier to do when they had each other to bounce off of. It felt good, almost like old times. Javier went through close to a third of his pack of cigarettes, the air growing heavy in the windowless room. Just as well that it was almost time to wrap this up. A look at his watch told him that it was getting late in the day, and that Steve would want to get home to his family. All Javier could hope for at this point was avoiding resident CIA-asshole Bill Stechner on his way out, at least on this day.
"You won't be able to pull your usual shit with this one." Steve remarked, accompanied by the sound of shuffling papers. Javier bristled, even though he knew the things people said about him, both behind his back and to his face.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Knowing didn't mean it didn't, occasionally, sting, but he'd given up on trying to influence other people's minds long ago. A reputation once acquired was not easily shed, not that he'd made much of an effort to.
"It means that you shouldn't. Pull your usual crap with this one. For one I hardly think it'll be necessary."
"That would be new." Javier snorted. He could hear Steve's eyeroll through the phone.
"Still the same asshole-" Steve snarked. "I'm just saying be nice for once, especially since that woman's intel is the only reason you still have a job. She's a nice lady, so with a bit of luck some of that might even rub off on you."
"And I'm the asshole..."
"So everyone keeps saying."
"Fuck you, Steve."
"Go fuck yourself, Javi." Steve's chuckle told him it was all in good humor. "And don't fuck this informant."
"Yeah, yeah," Javier waved it off. The woman was an accountant, for fuck's sake. Note exactly his usual type. Or the type he usually attracted.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
They were meeting at one of the small restaurants lining the edge of Parque Sabaneta in Medellín. Over the phone her voice had sounded... hesitant, above all else. Tinny, too, but he blamed the connection for that. And he'd brought her a satellite phone for future contacts; her driving out to remote phone cells and him waiting for calls after hours in his office just didn't cut it.
There hadn't been a picture in the file, but Steve's description had been quite accurate and Javier was able to pick her out at the table she'd chosen before making himself known. Dark hair and darker eyes behind large, slightly old-fashioned glasses. She was almost tall and hid her figure underneath loose-fitted clothing; today a flowy blouse and high-waisted dress pants, and a bulky cardigan against the spring chill that lingered even into the late morning. Her hair was pulled back into a low bun that reminded him of his fifth grade math teacher, Ms Jenkins. Javier approached the table.
"Diana Rivas?" She froze for a split-second before relaxing again, returning his greeting softly. In real life her voice was deeper than he would have anticipated, raspier too, but not unpleasant - the kind of voice one would expect first thing in the morning, just after waking up.
"I do hope your drive was not too tiring, Agent Peña." she said as he sat. He grimaced slightly. The drive had been long, above all else. Not his first choice of how to spend a Friday morning. Well, he'd endured worse for this job. But next time he'd definitely travel by plane.
"Do they serve decent coffee here?" Javier scrubbed a hand over his burning eyes and settled, resuming his assessment. She squirmed slightly under his unrelenting gaze, but squared her shoulders after a moment, meeting his gaze head-on and motioning a waiter over with a flick of her delicate wrist.
"Of course they do, this is Medellín!" She sounded mildly offended, then ignored him in favor of telling the waiter their order. Javier took the time to observe her further.
No make-up, no jewellery, save for a simple, functional watch and a small silver locket on a long, thin chain. No wedding band either, but the paleness and indentation around her ring finger still indicated that she'd worn one in the recent past. Her features were soft and feminine, with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, all making her look younger than she purportedly was. His gaze caught on her defined cupid's bow just a second too long. Her complexion seemed far too sunkissed for someone who spent most of their time indoors, in air-conditioned office spaces. In conclusion, undeniably lovely to anyone with eyes who cared to look, but obviously taking great pains to discourage closer scrutiny, to look as mousy and plain as possible. It worked, to a degree.
It occurred to Javier that maybe he should actually talk to her, since that's what he'd come here for.
"Do you always begin your interrogations with the silent treatment? I can see how that might be effective." She beat him to it, just before the coffee cups were set on the table in front of them.
"This isn't an interrogation." he groused, taking a tentative sip of the coffee. The scent of it alone was enough to wake the dead; it was heavenly. He'd have to see if he could weasel some halfway decent coffee out of his budget at the office.
"Regardless, I only have until noon today. We can meet again tomorrow; I can make myself available all afternoon for you, Agent Peña."
Javier huffed out a breath before taking another sip. "Why can you suddenly do Medellín anyway? You had Murphy travel across half the country to meet you."
She made a face at that, something between annoyed and apologetic. "My aunt, she... she's sick and been getting worse. I make the time to come down here every other weekend now to help her."
"And your employers are alright with that?" He hadn't exactly pegged the Calí cartel for employers of the year. Or to pioneer part-time models so their employees could care for sick relatives.
"As long as the work gets done, yes. It means I work ten to eleven hour days Monday to Thursday, but I am the only one left in this family..." She sniffled a little and swept the tips of her fingers under the plastic rim of her glasses, wiping at her eyes. Javier looked away, pretending it was to give her privacy. He imagined this unusually forthright woman walking up to Pacho Herrera to ask for reduced work hours so she could care for her aunt- That could really have gone either way, but somehow he thought that was probably not how it happened, or whom she'd asked. He just couldn't picture it. Maybe one of the brothers; they liked to style themselves as charitable family men, to a degree.
"Anyway, Medellín's closer for you, and we're less likely to be found out here. They like to keep security pretty tight in Calí. My friend Angelika calls it the Calí Stasi, and she's from the former East Germany, so she'd know."
He hummed in acknowledgement, his coffee almost gone and him almost feeling like a living human being again. He flagged the waiter down for another.
"In any case, I am glad that we can keep this to Spanish now. My English is not very ...confident." She prattled on, sipping from her own cup. Murphy had told him that she'd brought a dictionary to their first meeting, and apparently, with his former partner's dismal language skills, they'd actually needed it.
"I'm sure your English is better than Murphy's Spanish." Steve had told him as much, but then again, Steve's Spanish was shit, so it really wasn't saying much. There was something else niggling at the back of his mind.
"Why me?"
Her glasses slid down her nose half an inch or so in surprise at his -admittedly abrupt- question. "I'm sorry?"
"Murphy said you wanted to speak to me specifically when you first called. Why?"
She hesitated a moment, squirmed a little and averted her eyes, then pushed her glasses back up her nose before answering, softer than before. "Gabriela said you could be trusted."
"...Gabriela?" He said sharply, neck flushing at the thought of the beautiful redhead.
She shrunk in on herself, hands fidgeting nervously in her lap. Perhaps his voice had come out a little bit harsher than intended. He hadn't even thought that she'd actually tell him her real name. He'd just been a client after all.
"Yes," Miss Rivas breathed out, her voice so soft now that he had to lean halfway across the table to even catch it. "She's my best friend. We've been inseparable since the firts day of school. We tell each other everything. She told me she knew a DEA agent; that's why I told my cousin to go to her when she ran into trouble with Pablo Escobar-"
"Your cousin???" He almost roared. It came out as more of a whisper-yell, but she still flinched, eyes going wide behind the lenses.
"Yes, my cousin," she said carefully, "Maritza Rincón."
"Maritza–" he patted his pocket for a smoke and swore under his breath when he remembered how he'd left them in the car with the intention of advancing his 'quit smoking'-idea beyond idle talk. "What is this, a fucking trap? Very elaborate setup just to yell at me, missy. Unless you've got some buddies of yours here to–"
"What- what are you *talking* about? I don't blame you for Maritza's death!" By now people were staring. Not a lot of them, since it wasn't really the time yet for the midday crowd and too late for the morning rush, but the few pensioners and whatnot were definitely sensing the tension at their table. Javier gave up on his cigarette search and took a deliberate breath, willing himself to calm down.
"Maritza is dead?" He hadn't known that. He wasn't sure how he would have learned of it, but it still shocked him regardless. He looked over to see her fidget with her locket, lips pressed tight and trembling. Shit. Another informant on his conscience, fucking great.
"I'm sorry, I didn't-" he started, his voice catching. He bought himself time with his now lukewarm coffee, "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know that. I-"
"It's alright." She whispered, in a tone of voice that clearly indicated it wasn't. She swept her glasses off with trembling fingers and pressed beneath her eyes, as if to restrain the tears that pooled in her lashes.
"I'm sorry." Javier said again, insistent, soft, sincere. "What happened?"
"We- I don't know. She called me to say she was in trouble with Escobar, and I helped her set up the meeting with Gabi."
"With me." He remembered that evening, that young girl sitting in Gabriela's apartment, ready to be sprung on him. Part of him had resented it; Gabriela had been someone he'd sought out to get away from the damn narcos and their dealings. Miss Rivas nodded.
"Yes. It was that idiot Jhon. He was one of the neighborhood kids. Growing up he'd always had a crush on her..." She talked a lot, he found. It should irritate him more, the way she'd throw in seemingly irrelevant asides without explaining further. Instead he only found himself worrying that someone so pathologically honest could not possibly keep the Gentlemen of Calí off her tracks, at least not if she kept spilling her life story so eagerly.
" ...and then she hid out on her uncle's farm again, where my auntie - her mom - grew up and went back to after my uncle - that's Maritza's dad - died of a heart attack. Auntie had been out for the day and when she came back- "
He can't bear to listen to it, but forces himself to anyway. In the sea of his regrets, what's one more? Besides, there's nothing else he can do for the girl now; the least he can do is witness how he failed her.
For all her unassuming bluntness, Diana Rivas is not one to hold back, even on unsavoury details. At least he doesn't get the sense that she does it to torment when she tells him how they found Maritza's lifeless body with her young daughter next to her.
By the end of that sorry tale, he has his head in his hands, Miss Rivas is still just this side of openly weeping, and all the other patrons have demonstratively averted their attention so as not to impose on what must, on the outside, look like an urgent case for a damned good couples' counselor.
"I'm sorry, I know this is a lot." And why in the hell is she apologizing?
"No shit." And yeah, he has to digest this before he can even think of making any attempt at non-destructive human interaction. "You couldn't tell Murphy any of this?"
She gave him a look.
"Yeah, alright. Sorry." More than just a language barrier, got it.
"I didn't come here today with the intention to relive this, you know?" She said archly. He supposed she had all the right to be upset. And he'd never had a meeting with an informant turn this harrowing, which was really saying something.
"I'm sorry." He said again, putting the weight of sincerity behind the words. Her hands were in the table now, fidgeting again as she sat slightly hunched over, staring into her coffee cup.
"Unless your government has a time machine to spare, I would prefer not talking about it again. At least not more than necessary." She replaced her glasses and checked her watch. "1 pm tomorrow?"
Javier nodded dumbly, already plucking a few bills out of his wallet to pay for the coffee. "Yeah, 1 pm is okay. Where?"
"Meet me at the church. Santa Ana. You know it?" He didn't particularly, as in he didn't know its name before now, but he could see the building's tall white facade from where they were sitting.
"Iglesia de Santa Ana, 1 pm tomorrow." Javier confirmed, rising as she did. The stared at each other for a moment, unsure of how to conclude this meeting, until she stuck her hand out for him to shake. He took her smaller, slender hand in his, squeezing it wordlessly.
"Until tomorrow, Agent Peña." She said, managing a sad little smile. "I hope you'll get some rest. You look like shit."
Javier bit down every one of the snarky replies that sprung to mind, not least because he knew it was true. His bags had bags and he itched for a smoke.
And to think, this was Murphy's 'nice lady'.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Somehow it hadn't occurred to him that at the church meant inside the church. Not until a very miffed face peered out between the heavy doors, giving him a look as he stood there smoking.
"It's barely been five minutes!" Javier defended himself, stubbing out the cigarette beneath his heel.
"It's 1:07pm." She informed him matter-of-factly, pushing the glasses back up her nose pointedly as she made to turn back inside. Javier caught the door, crowding perhaps a bit too close, but the damned thing was heavy.
"Sorry." He said simply, seeing no point in making a scene out of it. She had to crane her neck just the slightest bit to meet his gaze.
"Wait here, I'll be out in a minute." And with that she stalked off. Javi watched her sweep down the aisle, her hair and skirt fluttering behind her. She wore her hair loose today, the ends of it curling around her shoulders, and a simple off-white shirt dress that reached down to mid-calf. He let his eyes trail after her, leaning his weight more fully against the heavy wood of the door to lever it open. She walked around two thirds of the way down the pews before stopping by a... baby carriage?
She bent over it before carefully wheeling it around and starting back towards the door. Javier racked his tired brain. The file hadn't said anything about a kid. Married five years but no children. That didn't seem like the kind of thing one would easily miss, and he knew Murphy to be thorough in his inquiries.
"Who's this then?" He peered inside the carriage -more of a buggy really now that he got a closer look- and barely caught a glance of a dozing toddler with soft brown curls, while hoisting the door open wider to let her pass more easily. "Didn't know you had a kid."
"I don't." The buggy caught on the threshold and jolted, and a displeased cry came from inside it, making her curse under her breath. "This is Maritza's daughter, Salome. I've got it! Just- the door, just get the door!"
The last part of that came out high and sharp, much like the crack of a whip, and in direct response to Javier's attempt to swoop in and help heave the buggy over the worn-down threshold. He jolted back on instinct, grunting when the door swung squarely into his spine. Who the hell was responsible for all these old-ass church doors being solid enough to squash an actual living human between them?
After some fumbling they managed to make it out with most of their dignity still intact. Javier bent down and quickly shoved the bag he'd brought into the wire basket underneath the buggy's seat, next to her purse.
"Where to?" He asked, straightening up again. Miss Rivas still looked cross, her lips pressed together.
"Follow along. There are some secluded benches a little walk away." And off she was, leavin him to catch up.
"If your intention is to disguise this meeting as just another family enjoying the sun I suggest you slow down a little." Javier hissed under his breath. He'd actually had to jog a bit to keep up with her steamroller pace. She looked even more annoyed and declined to grace him with an answer, but slowed with a sigh that told him that this was indeed her intention. It was a smart enough plan, he wouldn't dispute that.
At least the kid seemed to have calmed from her little jostle-startle, seeing as she was now quietly babbling away as if narrating the sights. Javier tried to loosen his tense shoulders and to look like he was enjoying himself as they fell into step ambling along the walkways between the lush greenery.
"How old is she?" he asked, thinking that perhaps some small talk would ease the woman's sullen mood.
"Almost two and a half." Or not. Well, he tried. Javier wasn't exactly an expert with kids and none of his previous informants had ever shown up with theirs. Not that that would have been appropriate considering the circumstances. They walked for about a quarter of an hour, which Javier spent agonizing about how to smooth over the sudden mood change Miss Rivas was displaying compared to the day before. By the time they'd made it to their destination he was no closer to that goal.
She sat with a weary sigh, shaking out her flowy skirt before sitting and rolling her sleeves up to her elbows. It was much warmer today than when they'd met previously, only in part due to the later hour. Stiffly, Javier sat down next to her at a distance that instantly belied their 'family outing' cover. She turned to him after checking on the baby, peeling back the sunshade of the buggy to allow her to look around.
"You can smoke if you want to." Miss Rivas said offhandedly, her tone forcedly polite. Javier cleared his throat.
"I'm actually trying to quit."
Her lips quirked into a pleasant curve. "And how's that going?"
Javier sighed. "I'm thinking I might have chosen the wrong time."
"Or the wrong job."
The laugh that bursts forth from him is short, but not altogether hollow. "Yeah, or that."
"Very well, then you may not smoke even though you might want to."
Javier smiled. Couldn't help it, really. He had been worried that he'd somehow managed to offend her during their last meeting. He said as much, and she shook her head with a look of remorse.
"No, it's not your fault. It's just..." She pushed her glasses up and rubbed at her eyes, revealing the dark rings that had previously been hidden beneath the plastic rim. "Yesterday dredged up some things, and I didn't sleep well as a consequence. That always makes me snippy. And to top things of, this one," she leaned over to unbuckle the child and heave her into her lap, "was being fussy all morning, which didn't help. Sorry for being so short with you earlier."
"In this job, people usually shoot at me. It's alright, really. You're alright." Truth be told, he was glad she pulled herself out of this funk. Maybe she was as nice as Murphy claimed after all. The kid looked at him with large, round, strangely sage eyes. I got your mommy killed. I got your mommy killed and you had to watch. If he had gotten her that visa- The thought made him gulp, made him dizzy and nauseous and if there was anything to be glad for in this situation it was that he was already sitting down. Miss Rivas replaced her glasses and looked at him with furrowed brows. He felt like he was being read.
"I already told you that I don't blame you for Maritza." Javier tried his damnedest not to squirm underneath that discerning stare. Screw read, he felt like he was being flayed open. "Obviously you still blame yourself."
"Wouldn't you?" He shot back, defensive. She didn't answer for a moment, gently rocking the kid who had grabbed a hold of her locket and started to play with it.
"I have enough regrets of my own, Agent Peña." Part of him wants to scoff, even just to dispel the heavy moment, but the severity in her tone nips that impulse in the bud. Instead, he clears his throat and gestures to the buggy where he stored his bag earlier.
"I brought you something."
Her features soften into not quite a smile, but something close enough. "What a coincidence, so have I."
And then she hands him the toddler, who lets out a displeased cry at having her toy wrenched from her chubby hands in so unceremonious a manner, and Javier freezes as her squirmy weight is settled in his lap, only his hand shooting out to steady her on instinct. Up close her big brown eyes are even more enormous.
"Um, hi. Nice to meet you, Miss Salome. I'm Javier." He says awkwardly and is met with a pout. This is patently terrible and reminds him of the few times he'd been handed baby Olivia. She'd started crying instantly nine times out of ten. He hopes against hope that today will be a deviation from that norm. Salome considers him a long moment, blinking owlishly and making that certain kind of skeptical face that little kids so often do. He's had less tense moments in interrogations. He might be sweating in a way that has little to do with the midday heat.
And then Salome blows him a raspberry and dives for his wrist to investigate the shininess of his watch. And when he can breathe again he allows himself a smile. Of relief, mostly. In stark contrast to the smile Miss Rivas wears as she regeards them both, which is pure mischief with a dash of smugness.
"Well look at that. You passed muster, Agent Peña." Miss Rivas set both their bags down in the space between them, then leaned over to press a quick kiss to little Salome's soft curls. And Javier has been much closer to many women than this; his heart shouldn't lurch at the sudden proximity, the waft of her perfume or the light brush of her soft hair over his bare forearm.
"Ladies first." Javier gestured at the bags between them. She smiled and rummaged through hers, producing two thick stacks of folded papers, either parcel secured with a rubber band.
"Trade you?" she motioned at the girl, who was now intently examining the fingers of his right hand. Reluctantly, he let Miss Rivas pluck the small child from his lap and stand her next to the bench. Salome frowned adorably for a moment at having been interrupted in pulling his pinky finger off, then realized she was free to roam around and brightened instantly, hitting the bench a few times with chubby palms and babbling.
"Yes, of course I have your toy, sweetie." Miss Rivas said earnestly, presenting a brightly colored ball. Salome grabbed for it with a squeal, her momentum propelling her straight onto her backside. Miss Rivas turned back to Javier with that soft, fond expression still on her face and handed him one of the parcels.
"Do... did you want to go over this? While I'm here to explain things?"
"That complex, huh?"
"Well, it's a lot to do with creative book-keeping and tax law loopholes. It's more about how they structure their business to launder their incomes than anything else, but it'll still be helpful in building a case, no?"
It is, which is the whole reason he's been sent back here apparently. And while it's nothing the analysts back at the office can't handle (probably), he still likes being in the loop. And also maybe because he enjoys the sound of her voice. In any case he peels off the rubber band and unfolds the stack of papers, keeping a careful hand around it to ensure that nothing blows away in the spring breeze. Miss Rivas pulled out a pencil from her purse and shuffled closer. Close enough that he can smell her perfume again. - - - Over the following hour and a half Javier realized several important things:
One. Diana Rivas is likely one of the cleverest people he has ever met. By page eight his head is swimming with numbers, but her even explanations make even tiered corporate tax rebate systems sound fascinating. Even in his line of work, he'd never truly considered accounting to be the stuff of suspense, but she makes it sound like a thriller that even the brightest heads in Hollywood would have trouble coming up with.
Two. Having to do anything while keeping an eye in a rambunctious small child who is still learning to walk is a uniquely stressful experience. Little Salome is bouncing around the small patch of grass in front of the bench much like her ball, endowed with seemingly endless reservoirs of energy. She crashes into his knee a few times while chasing her ball or deciding that playing hide and seek underneath the bench is a better use of her time, and it puts him on edge that he feels responsible at all.
Three. The Rodríguez brothers make more than enough money from their few legitimate businesses to never have to worry themselves financially. Not that this had been in question, technically, but to see the numbers in black and white is still galling, even if he's not nearly as incensed about it as Miss Rivas seems to be. And while Javier is far from a religious man, he does consider greed that is levered with blood to be at least distateful.
Four. It's not her perfume he smelled earlier, but her shampoo, bright and fruity, with high notes of citrus.
Five. As long as this is all they have and all she can get, the DEA cannot make a move against the Calí cartel. His orders had been very clear on that. Nail them down beyond escape and make absolutely sure you get them into custody, in that order. It means that whatever Miss Rivas can reveal about the inner financial working of the cartel is valuable, but on its own won't be enough. As always in this job it's sorting through a haystack with a rake in search of needlepoints.
Which brings him to the next thing he needs to ask her. Needs to ask her to do for him, and the operation, to be specific, and he can already tell she'll say yes eagerly. Eager informants should be a blessing, but their eagerness seems to directly correlate with their likelihood of getting killed, or close enough.
"This is for you." He says instead, handing her the satellite phone. There's directions that go with it, but he takes the time to walk her through it nonetheless. Also his numbers, both office and home, just in case. He watched as she carefully tucked everything into her purse.
It's later in the afternoon now - past three - and Salome comes toddling over, handing Javier her ball and sitting down on the grassy ground with a world-weary sigh.
"Okay, time for your nap I think, young lady." Miss Rivas plucked the child from the ground and stood to deposit her back in the buggy, then holding out her hand to him expectantly. He hands the ball over after a split-second of dumbstruck hesitation.
"Well, goodbye then, Agent Peña."
He stood. Offered her his hand to shake, which she took. "I'll call you during the week. What time is good for you?"
"Any time between seven and ten. I'll probably be in Medellín again in a month. I'll let you know if I have more intel by then." He nodded, finally releasing her hand after realizing he still had her fingers clasped in his. She smiled and turned to leave, wheeling the buggy around from its resting position and onto the footpath. "Oh, and Agent Peña?" She turned halfway, throwing the words over her shoulder with a smirk. "Gabriela won't be available tonight, just so you know. We're meeting for dinner and general catching up."
His neck flushed hotly, both despite and because he'd had no intention of visiting her.
"Thanks," he said stiffly, "Give her my best."
"Will do!"
Shaking his head, Javier watched her retreat until she disappeared from view behind a bend in the path.
-------------------------------------------------------
Further author’s note bc apparently I have more to say:
I’m gonna play a bit fast and loose with the timeline, because the show makes it look like Javi was sent back pretty much immediately and it only took those ~6 months to take down the cartel bosses, but in reality Escobar died in December of 1993 and the Calí godfathers weren’t arrested until summer of ‘95, so I’m sending Javi back to Colombia in the first half of ‘94 (April to be specific), meaning the time frame for this story is about a year
also I thought Maritza’s daughter in the series was still a baby, but upon rewatch it is actually stated in s2 ep4 that she’s two, and now I had to rewrite those parts. As to why she doesn’t speak, that’s actually something that will come up later and has nothing to do with my bad memory of the series. though tbh I probably assumed that because Olivia was a baby for like three years. (also according to the timeline I determined Maritza’s daugher would actually be between three and four at this point, but I’m going to disregard that. I’ve already had to age her up once and for the purposes of this story I need her to be still this little)

Cillian's brother dropped them at the airport before he bid farewell to them both. It was another early morning start but they had to get home as early as possible so Gabrijela could start packing and figuring out what to send via post. They checked in, wandered around the airport for a bit and ate before they headed through to the boarding gate. As they sat and waited, Cillian had his arm around her shoulder, his cheek against her head that rested on his shoulder.
She scrolled through her Instagram, she remembered he had caught her on her fandom account and she was red-faced when she showed him what she posted. It was a multifandom account, and she posted various textposts, fan art and the like of her favourite books or TV Shows. "Still makes me chuckle you posted such old photos of me with those funny captions or whatever you'd call them." Cillian murmured. She rolled her eyes, "Shut up. I was and still am a dedicated fan!" "Well, now you are more than a fan to me." He pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Mhm." She tilted her head back and kissed him softly before she resumed her scrolling. But before she was going to tuck her phone away she came across a photo in the explore section of the app. "Oh, good god." She whispered in shock, "Cilly look." She showed him a photo of them both. It was more distanced but blurry so you couldn't make it out who she was really. It was when they were waiting at the airport coming to Cork. "Who took it?" He looked at it, frowning. He knew she wouldn't post anything of their relationship online, they had a talk about it and she was super respectful about it. "No idea. Just says someone had taken it. Maybe it's from Twitter." She felt worry ease into her. She hoped there weren't other sneaky photos of her and Cillian online. She never really said she was going overseas to her online fanbase either, just to her close friends back at home and the ones she made at Uni. "I'm sorry." He said as he ran his hand up and down her arm. "What for?" She looked up at him, confused as to why he would apologise. "For that." He gestured to the photo, "I should have been more thoughtful of those things." He began to let her go. "Cillian, no. Hey," she took his hands as she faced him, "I knew that something like this would happen on the end. I don't want it to ruin what we have." She didn't want him holding back on her when they were out in public. "I don't want you to be plastered all over the internet, either." He squeezed her hands. "I mean, my face is already on the internet. My accounts are not private." She shrugged. "I'll take a look on Twitter but... It doesn't bother me much. Unless you don't want the word going out about you being with someone." "I don't really like the idea of people being too into someone else's life. I'm just concerned about how it would be interpreted by everyone." He said. "Mm. I agree. They can be quite cruel. I've seen how people can react to their idols being with someone else... But again, Cillian, I don't want to like... Not be romantic when we are out in public. I want us to be just us, holding hands and all that. I couldn't care less what online haters would think about." She cupped his jaw. "Are you sure?" He asked. "I am. I can handle it. Besides, if there is an issue, who cares hm? They don't know us." She kissed him lightly. "If you say so." He said as his arm went back around her and they resumed their position. He would still be worried either way.   It was time to board and they detached themselves from each other and picked up their bags. They lined up with the other people, holding hands. She would not let the online images hurt them. When it came to showing affection, she didn't want to hide it. "Um, excuse me," Someone tapped Gab on her shoulder. She turned to see three girls looking at them keenly, "Are you dating Cillian?" She asked, eyes darting to their held hands and to Cillian who also turned to see them. They seemed quite surprised at the sight of Gabrijela, she could see it in their eyes. Cillian had replied instead, "We are. Why do you ask?" "There are rumours online, uh, photos popping up. The fans are uh, going crazy about it. Kinda a big deal, cause no one um... well expected..." She trailed off when Gab and Cillian turned away to get through the gates. Gabrijela gave Cillian a little giggle as they stepped through and headed down the hallway. "Seems like more photos." He said, frowning deeply. "It's fine Cillian, don't stress." She squeezed his hand. They got into the plane and took their seats, this time he was beside the window. The whole ordeal started up again but Cillian comforted her, and she settled faster with his gentle and caring words. She cuddled him throughout the trip, the turbulence was pretty bad as they went through a storm. He wrapped his jacket around her shoulders and made the scarf that she stole from him as a pillow on his shoulder. But after an hour and a half or so, they landed safely and got off the plane. The girls that spoke to them before seemed to follow them. "We got a bit of a party following us," Gabrijela said to Cillian as they headed towards the many taxis that waited. He glanced over his shoulder and chuckled, "It seems so." He hailed down a taxi and got their stuff into the boot before he held open the door for her. "Tough they won't see much anymore." She laughed and got into the car and he got in after her. It was nice to be back home now, they headed upstairs and she laid on his bed, "Ooooo," She groaned, "Cillys bed... So good." She giggled as he crawled up over her, laying down on her but not enough to crush her. He kissed her neck, "You miss it?" He asked. She giggled, "Yeah I did." She turned so she was now looking up at him. She leaned up and kissed him, "We gotta keep moving though. I have to go back to the apartment to pack up the remaining things there and clean up." He nodded and got off her. They had a quick bite before they headed over to her apartment. They packed up whatever she had left behind into his car before they cleaned up the place. She threw out most of the old food that was left behind. The apartment was just like how she came to it. She had taken off the sheets to and left them as a neat pile. She left a wonderful card and a wine behind for the owner of the apartment before she finally said goodbye to the place. Heading back to Cillian's home, she spent it packing up her stuff. But she kept most of her souvenirs in her suitcase all wrapped up in clothing. She didn't want to send it via parcel. She had packed the majority, leaving out her new set of clothing for tomorrow. Every other bits and piece was easy to just shove into her carry-on. Cillian came up the stairs to see how she was going, "Damn you are quick," He said. "Yeah. Just need a scale to weigh the bag." She said. "Got it." He went to the wardrobe and pulled out the scale. They weighed and she had some more room to add a few more clothing in. Now she had two small piles of clothing to send off. "Let's head to the post office now." She said and they headed off. They did what they had to do, and she made sure she was to pay for the fees of the parcel. Since it was a nice day, Cillian decided to take her out to St. James' park to have brunch. He had a blanket in the back and they headed in a nicer part of the park, a little secluded. They set up and Cillian went to a nearby cafe he liked to buy them food. In the meantime, Gabrijela spoke to her dad on the phone and listened to him ask if she had everything packed and whatnot. He would call her in the morning before she would leave as well. She laid back on the blanket, a hand over her tummy. She listened to the hum of the city and the voices of people around her. Cillian returned with a bag, "I'm back. Bit of a hold-up but I'm here." He grinned as he sat down beside her. She sat up, "Thanks babe," She smiled and helped him take the stuff out. "Whatcha get?" "I got us both eggs and bacon, I got you hot chocolate as well. I also got capers for myself." He said. "Thank you," She leaned over and kissed him deeply. "Love you." "Love you too," He said and pecked at her lips before they both dug into their food. They finished up and Cillian disposed of their rubbish before he came back and they laid back together. She snuggled close to his chest, his arm around her shoulders. "I'm gonna miss this," She said, stroking his chest. "Same." He played with her hair, running his fingers through it. "You gonna miss me?" She looked up at him. "Of course I will. So much." He cupped her face. "I will make sure we can talk as much as possible, video and all." She said, leaning up to kiss him. "Sounds good." He murmured, kissing her back. They held each other for a bit like that, totally in their own world as they kissed slowly. They finally broke apart and packed up before he went back to the car to leave the blanket and came back to her. They took a walk around the park and Cillian listened to her talk about how she was going to dread going back in for the last year of her University course. "I've been doing good in my game design as well, so I might see if I can get into that." She said. "Not costume designing?" Cillian asked. "Dunno, I enjoyed it but... I was quite stressed. I don't like the feeling." She laughed softly. "But I'll see." They came back to the car and headed home. When she stepped through the door, Cillian closed it and then pulled her against him. She gasped, "What are you doing?" She laughed as he began to pepper her neck with kisses. "Kissing you." He said, his hands resting on her hips before they snaked up to cup her breasts. "I think you want more than kisses, babe." She moaned softly as he gripped them tightly. She was pushed up against a wall, "Cilly." He kept fondling her breasts, then began to unbutton her blouse and discarded it aside. She smirked and pushed her ass against his crotch, then began to grind against him. "Mmm babe, you like that huh?" She purred. His hands returned to her hips, "I do. Keep doing that love." He watched how she moved against him, his hands now moved back up her sides before he turned her around and kissed her deeply, his fingers tangling in her hair. She moaned as she gripped his shirt, lifting it up before she pulled it over his head. "I want... I want you to use something on me." She blushed, running her hands down his soft skin along his arms. "Yeah? What is it?" He kissed her again. "It's in the bedroom. Let's go there." She took his hand as he picked up their shirts and headed upstairs. She opened up her suitcase and pulled out a black bag. Then she held out an eight-inch long vibrator that was a sparkly purple. "I'm going to be honest, I've never seen them in person." Cillian laughed as he came over, taking it from her. "No?" She raised a brow, "Then where did you see it? In porn?" She brushed past him and laid on the bed, smirking. "Maybe." He chuckled and turned to her, "So you want me to tease you with this?" He turned it on. "Yeah." She nodded, parting her legs despite still got her pants on. He brought it to her crotch, and held it against her and watched how she let out a moan. "Mmm, let's take off these pants first." He said as he waited for her to take her jeans off and throw it aside. He got on the bed, kneeling between her legs as he returned the vibe to her core. She sucked in a breath, gripping the sheets. He had it on a low setting, stroking her up and down through her panties. "Ah..." She laid back, eyes closed as she enjoyed the feeling. "Cilly..." "We should turn it up now, don't want you to enjoy this too much." He said and turned it even higher. She gasped, bringing her legs up. "No, keep them down." He pinned them between his thigh and calves. She whined. Cillian continued to tease her, letting the tip roll over her clit which caused her back to arch then he dragged it back down and then inserted the toy into her. He pushed her leg open with one hand, eyes flicking from her core to her face. "God, Gabrijela." He loved the pleasure on her face, the need and desperation in her eyes. "Cillian! Please! I'm close!" She whined, twisting the sheets in her hands. "Not yet, love. Hold on for me." He said and pushed the toy in and out of her. He let go of her legs and leaned down, and wrapped his lips around her clit and began to suck hard. Her hands shot into his hair, the vibrations of the toy was intense and he kept pushing it against her g-spot. "Fuck! Cillian! Cilly!" She bucked her hips, her screams loud as she came, arching right off the bed. He kept going till she was done, groaning softly as he pulled the toy out, seeing how slick it was with her climax. "Fastest climax ever." He chuckled, kissing up her thigh to sit back. She panted, "I need you in me, Cillian. Oh god." She shook her head. "Mm, but you asked me to use this on you. So I will." He mused, "Lay on your side." She moved to her side as he got behind her, an arm went under her head and locked around her chest. He brought the vibrator back to her clit and began to tease her once more. "N-Not right after a climax! Fuck!" She stayed still for him, she wanted to be good for him. But she couldn't help but buck her hips. "Be still, love. Don't move too much." He kissed her neck, sucking on a spot. She whimpered, clinging to his arms that were around her, god he was relentless as he continued to prod and poke her sensitive clit. But then he decided to push it into her and she arched her back a little. "Cillian!" He claimed her lips once more and kissed her as he thrust the vibrator inside her, she was super slick so it moved in and out swiftly but he could feel when she clenched her walls the vibe got stuck. Gabrijela reached up and dragged her fingers through her hair, "I need you, Cillian, I want you inside me. Please." She begged, rolling her hips. "Yeah? How bad?" He tugged on her bottom lip. "Really bad, Cilly. Please don't make me wait." She could feel his hard cock press against her ass through his jeans. He let out a grunt and got her to hold the vibrator inside her as he pulled off his pants. Then he was back up against her, and removed the vibrator, "Tuck me in, love." He nibbled on her earlobe. She reached between her legs and found his waiting cock, "So hard, baby." She giggled and positioned him to her entrance. Then she tugged him and he was inside her in one swift movement. They both moaned in unison, "Hold your leg up, Gab." He kissed her neck then to her shoulder. She lifted her leg up and he placed the vibrator back on to her clit. She cried out softly, and he felt her walls tighten around him. "Mmm fuck, Gabrijela. Do that again." She nodded and clenched her walls, she could feel every hard inch of him, especially when he started to move. "Shit." She gasped. He kept his eyes focused on her face, enjoying how tight she was and how he managed to drag those cute little sounds from her. He thought about how lucky he was to have her as his girlfriend. He had wished for someone to come into his life and here she was. Here they were, making love. He loved her, truly, he loved her. He could not bring himself to think of any other woman but her. And his heart would hurt when she was no longer warming his bed. Gabrijela looked up, seeing the pure love and devotion in his eyes. "Cillian, I love you." She said through a moan, "I love you so much! Oh!" She could feel her climax start to build again, and this one was gonna be a big one. "I love you too, beautiful. Oh fuck, I love you!" He kissed her hard, pounding hard into her, the bed shaking a little. He will miss her. So he threw aside the vibrator, turning it off and laid her on her back and pushed right back into her with a groan. Her legs locked around his thighs and her arms around his back, her nails digging into his skin. "Fuck! Mark me Gabrijela, fuck." He cursed and kissed her again as her nails scraped down his skin. He moved fast and wild, all he wanted was to please her. Make sure she would feel this for days when she would return back to her home. "Mine!" He cried out, "You're mine, Gabbie." "All yours baby. I'm all yours." She cupped his face and kissed him passionately but it was messy as from his fast thrusting. "I'm gonna cum, Cilly. Oh god, don't stop. Oh please!" Cillian worked hard, panting hard, his moans loud and cracked occasionally before they got faster and faster before his climax tore through him like wildfire. She screamed out his name as she came with him, she felt his warm load fill her inside up as she clenched and locked him in as she finished with him. After some moments they calmed down, but he stayed on top of her and inside her. His head was tucked into her neck and kissing her flushed skin. She ran her hands up and down his back slowly, admiring the curves of his spine and the divots of his muscles in his shoulders. "My handsome man," She whispered, her fingers returning to the nape of his neck and playing with the soft curls of his hair. He let out a soft chuckle, "My beautiful woman." He said as he raised his head to look at her. "My love." He touched her cheek, stroking her skin with a thumb. "I love you with all my heart, Cillian." She said, leaning into the touch. He gave her that breathtaking smile and they kissed for some time, and when they managed to get their breath back they got back into lovemaking. It was slow and gentle, then hard and fast with many different positions. Any position that had her against his body. After they have worn each other out, they bathed and then spent the rest of the afternoon together in his home. He pulled out his guitar and sang for her, then made her the best dinner ever, watched a cute romantic film before they drank red wine in front of the fire. They never parted from each other, every minute they wanted to be close. And despite being worn out, they made love one more time in front of the fire. She rode him till he came twice in her before he lifted her up and carried her to bed. He laid her down and they cuddled naked, she faced him and snuggled into his chest. Today was a wonderful day, and she would remember it forever. "I love you," She said in the dark. "I love you too," Cillian replied, kissing her head before they both fell asleep holding each other.

This is gonna make so many horrible people unhappy. EVERY Takeover has had at least one match-of-the-year candidate on it. Some of the most emotional moments in that brand have come from cards that even aren't quite as good. I even considered not doing this list, because, by all accounts, NXT Takeover: Tampa isn't even going ahead. But then I thought, fuck it, let's celebrate, taken all together, for my taste, the best wrestling product in the history of mankind. It's not just moves; it's emotional investment, sharply-focused, character-based storytelling, intricately-performed spectactle from the greatest physical specimens ever to lace their boots. It FINALLY legitimized Western women's wrestling in the mainstream (Michelle McCool, Trish, Molly, Mickie, Jazz, Victoria, you all were stunning performers in your own right, but you and your kind were, until NXT, only given 3 minutes: the longest women's match IN HISTORY, until 'Mania 32, was Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James at Wrestlemania 22, and it got 9 minutes.), it's got some of the greatest tag wrestling ever seen on ANY brand, it's created the longest-drawn storytelling ever, it's the best of the indies, the best of the WWE, wrapped up in a sequence of shows that were epic without being FIVE FUCKING HOURS LONG.
Where do I even start...?
Honorable mention: Takeover: R Evolution (I have to, because I've only got 10) Sami Zayn spends over a year, clawing and sweating and tearing walls down, just to get to the top of the mountain in NXT. He has the opportunity to cheat, but does it his OWN way, as beautiful, unique babyface Sami Zayn...before being no-scoped by his best friend, who debuted THAT NIGHT. The undercard isn't as strong, so I can't officially include it, but this payoff, this triumph, and this tragedy represents everything the first era of NXT was, and kickstarted it, truly, onto its first golden era. So, properly, then...
10. Takeover: Rival If you leave this list feeling like the title reigns, and thus, ERAS, of Zayn/Owens are a little under-represented by it, I completely understand. After all, so much good came from that time. American Alpha soldifying themselves as the dominant tag team, the Iron-Woman match between Sasha and Bayley, Becky Lynch putting all the pieces together, Enzo and Cass actually being GOOD...it was, still, at its heart, a developmental brand at that time. It had indie megastars, yes, but it also had the likes of Bull Dempsey. And that's not a dig at Bull Dempsey, it's just that those early Takeovers were an eclectic mix of skill levels, which is what NXT was at that time. It was a place to showcase these people. That said, some of these cards were truly *fantastic.* Case in point: Takeover: Rival. Not only was the undercard completely stacked (Hideo Itami vs. Tyler Breeze over-delivered; we had the first and still SOMEHOW ONLY Fatal 4-Way match between the Four Horsewomen; and Finn Balor vs. Neville was a solid match of the year candidate), but the main event was the first step in one of the most storied rivalries in the history of wrestling: Zayn vs. Owens. The video package is one of the best NXT ever did, and the match...was a masterpiece of simple-but unexpected booking. Zayn mistimes a leap to the outside, hits his head, and Owens responds by powerbombing him over...and over...and over again, until the ref stops the match. Zayn loses nothing, because he was never pinned, Owens is made to look even MORE the loathsome monster, and Zayn's title reign ends after just a month, without the champion nor the championship devalued in any way. It showed that NXT knew, even then, how to reward fans for their emotional investment.
9. Takeover: Portland Right now, NXT feels like it's approaching the very end of a special time in its life. Like it's on the verge of hitting critical mass. One of either Gargano or Ciampa probably leaving the company after the next Takeover, and the reign of the Undisputed Era seems to be crumbling, too. In yesteryear, this would indicate a raft of very important call-ups, neccessitating a shift in the roster and a period of calm centered around more patient character-building. NXT's existence now as a third brand throws that formula into uncertainty, but it definitely feels like they're ramping up to a finale, because goddamn, this is NXT almost at a point of self-parody. Every match is so. MUCH. Lee/Dijakovic is the pinnacle of HOT wrestling (and Lee, will you marry me?) Bianca Belair breaks out as an actual superstar...just as Charlotte decides to visit and to ruin everything, which is just dreadful timing. Gargano/Balor being everything we need it to be, and also Balor pinning Gargano with his fucking dick. And the Broserweights being VERY DUMB...but also VERY, VERY GOOD. The only thing that lets this card down...and this is obviously subjective...is that NXT has almost come TOO FAR, now, in its delivery on its main events, in that every kickout starts to beggar belief. On the level of Triple H/Undertaker at Wrestlemania 28, in that I still love it, but...hoo, it can be exhausting. Depends on how much Ring of Honor you like in your gumbo, I guess, but it feels like everyone on the roster is racing toward Tampa to explode, like a wrestling Crisis on Infinite Earths, and then MAYBE...things can calm down. Just a hair. Y'know, if Tampa even...still happens.
8. Takeover: Philadelphia If there's one man that's become synonymous with NXT, it's Johnny fucking Wrestling. You know, what would happen if a meerkat put on muscle mass and became the best set-piece wrestler this side of Daniel Bryan. We knew since he started his tag team with Tommaso Ciampa that he was an exceptional wrestler, but it wasn't until Philadelphia, and his INSANE match with Andrade "Cien" Almas, that we saw him as truly the industry's next star. It was the first Takeover match to go over 30 minutes (Sasha/Bayley at Respect went EXACTLY 30, don't @ me), it was the first NXT match to get 5 stars from Dave Meltzer (if that matters to you), and it set a new bar for Takeover main events. And while the undercard doesn't live up to it, it's still loaded with excellent matches. A.O.P. vs. the Undisputed Era is something special. Shayna Baszler makes her Takeover debut, and while she's nowhere near her prime, it cemented her immediately. Velveteen Dream and Kassius Ohno have a very fun match, and Aleister Black and Adam Cole have a ludcriously stupid no-holds-barred match, featuring two men doing with chairs what no one ought to do with chairs. But as good as all of that is, it's really a one match show, but what a match, and Ciampa ending it by being an utter bastard yet again.
7. Takeover: Brooklyn I Does the first Brooklyn Takeover feature Canadian Destroyers, 18 kick-outs and "fight forever" chants? It does not. Does it create moments of wrestling happiness that are rarely, if ever, replicated? It sure does. Firstly, Blue Pants appears and helps the Vaudevillains defeat Blake and Murphy. Seems quaint to look back on it, but it made everyone SO goddamn HAPPY that night. If you're forgetting, Leva Bates (that wrestling librarian in AEW right now) was once a comedy jobber in NXT, who wore Blue Pants. Adorable. Ignore what happened on the main roster (which is something you'll probably have to do with a lot of these shows, I imagine), but the Vaudevillains were once incredibly over (I promise!), and their win was one of several beam-inducing moments from this stellar night. Samoa Joe destroyed Baron Corbin at the height of his game, Apollo Crews debuted brilliantly (again, ignore what happens next!) and Balor and Owens' ladder match was also fantastic. Also, what's Jushin Thunder Liger doing here?? Wrestling like he's in his early 30s, that's goddamn what!! But of course, the reason we're all here is Sasha Banks vs. Bayley, and...there's still something in my eye. Anytime people want to rag on NXT for being "predictable," remind them that giving the people a moment they've genuinely prayed for...is a good thing. Bayley besting Sasha Banks at her prime just made us all...so happy. All of us. Everyone. When that curtain call took place, it was so earned. The narrative of women's wrestling dominated most of 2015, and this moment, this match, was the apex of that narrative.
6. Takeover: Chicago I And speaking of feelings...hello, Ciampa, you godless fuck. And so begins maybe the actual greatest rivalry in all of NXT. It is truly an odyessy, with twists, turns, injuries, betrayals, wounds torn open, and this is the nexus point. Well, the seeds had already sort of been planted, because Triple H knows what he's doing. Ciampa almost ALMOST turns on Gargano after their terrific match in the Cruiserweight Classic, only for the team to die another day...and what a death it was. After a great ladder match, the two stand atop the ramp, and you think "will it happen?" And the absolute bastards show you the copyright logo, just to make you think the show ends there, because it always does, seconds after that happens. You unclench, you breathe out, relax...Ciampa whispers "this is MY moment" and then...It is a perfectly engineered bait-and-switch, and exactly as vicious as it needs to be. Pats on the back, all 'round. This moment alone makes this a worthwhile Takeover, but there's also a hell of an undercard. The women's triple-threat (Ruby Riott vs. Asuka vs. Nikki Cross) is stellar, Bobby Roode and Hideo Itami have their respective best Takeover matches ever, and then there was Tyler Bate vs. Pete Dunne. An absolute show-stealer of a match, a star-making performance for both men (especially Dunne), it cemented the career of several men, and was a fully-formed GREAT show, as opposed to a good show in service to a storyline.
5. Takeover: Brooklyn IV Gargano and Ciampa's battle of brotherhood, betrayal and brainwashing was supposed to blow off at Takeover: New York, but because God hates necks, Tomato Champion was out of action, making this the final singles encounter to date, until Tampa (again, IF it even happens). This is the weakest of their 3 excellent encounters (which still makes it better than any match over SummerSlam weekend), but it also features Johnny Stupid running into a speaker, because his dumb ass can't seem to quit Ciampa. It's one of the greatest long-form feuds for a reason, mirroring Bret and Owen from 1993 into 1994, with all the repeated imagery, the callbacks, the nuances, the psychological cruelty. The street fight at Chicago II is MAYBE better, but this undercard, for me, is a lot stronger. It featured the Undisputed Era vs. Moustache Mountain, aka the Brothers Shithead vs. the Proud Circus Bear and His Beautiful Son. Velveteen Dream vs. EC3 was the closest NXT got to WWE-style storytelling and was still brilliant (remember when EC3 wrestled?), and HEY, wouldn't you know it, Kairi Sane was once a character with dimensions, as evidenced by an amazing match with Shayna Bazsler. But what makes this undercard truly stellar is Adam Cole vs. Ricochet. It is so nice to see Ricochet used well, etc., but I will still never stop pissing myself at Cole nailing him square in the jaw with a superkick WHILE HE'S MID-MOONSAULT UPSIDE-DOWN SWEET JESUS. Sometimes...sometimes...things fall exactly into place.
4. Takeover: WarGames (2018) The WarGames Takeovers are just so silly. It's a silly shoebox, filled with huge, silly men who only barely know why they're killing each other. It's as close as we ever get to WWE's now-terminal problem of "set aside whatever feuds you have right now, because it's Stipulation Month!" (see: Hell In a Cell, most Money In the Bank shows, though Elimination Chamber largely sidesteps this). The other Shoebox Takeovers are really good, no doubt, but this one stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. But there is not a bad match on this card. Kassius Ohno rides Matt Riddle's knee all the way to heaven; NXT shows why 2-out-of-3-falls is fast becoming its signature stipulation with the excellent blowoff between Sane/Baszler; Sexy Mindgames Prince had a star-making match against Tommaso Ciampa, showing why he may be the best overall character in NXT right now, and sweet lord, Aleister Black vs. Johnny Wrestling. It somehow showed that Gargano was JUST AS, if NOT MORE engaging as a dirtbag than as a good guy. And those Black Masses are presents just for me, a guy who tends to like more community theater in his wrestling than flips ("I ABSOLVE YOU...OF ALL YOUR SINS!"). And then we get to the Shoebox, and gosh it's silly! The Viking Experience, Ricochet and Pete Dunne take on the Undisputed Era, and...its a fucking LOT. 45 minutes of spots and smashing, with just a sprinkling of story, with Fish locking Dunne in his cage so he can't participate in the match. Since this seems to be what this match is designed for...let's rattle off some spots! Ricochet, jumping from one ring to the other! That amazing face-off that recreates the Captain America: Civil War poster! Perhaps the beefiest Tower of Doom in all of wrestling! And then Ricochet proving just how amazing he is...with the double moonsault off the top of the cage. What a stupid thing to do in an amazing, amazing show.
3. Takeover: Dallas I get it; a lot of people might not rank this Takeover quite so high. But it might be my actual personal favorite...? Overall...? More than any other Takeover, this show feels the most like it's filled with living, breathing superheroes. Many NXT stars are seen as just indie guys whose only gimmick is "I'm a very good wrestler," making them almost anti-WWE at the core. But NXT doesn't get enough credit for being, at its core, the best aspects of WWE. The showmanship, the things that elevate mere wrestlers to things like monsters, gods, and demons. I will always like my NXT WWE-style: the best wrestling cut with the most theater, the most camp. And Dallas is that concept, writ large. Baron Corbin coming out with lil' skulls on his shoulders. American Alpha finally becoming Super Saiyan Nerds. Asuka killing our hero, because Bayley is a person, and Asuka is a goddess who can perform brain surgery with her feet. Finn Balor coming out and going actual Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Samoa Joe. It's excellent wrestling, near-mythic visuals...and then we get to Nakamura/Zayn. The most special moment of a very special night. It is, from nearly every perspective, perfect. The hype of the crowd, salivating with anticipation. That moment when Nakamura appears in silhouette, and that violin note slides like a knife across steel, to reveal the man who set New Japan aflame. Sami Zayn getting the best possible swan song in a promotion built almost entirely on HIS back. The end of his era. That bit where they just KEEP PUNCHING ONE ANOTHER. I know it's not a perfect show (Balor/Joe stops for 3 minutes to address a cut on Joe's forehead, stalling its momentum; that Corbin/Ares match isn't as good as it could be) but that all means nothing. It's a sentimental choice, and I'd make it #1 if I could.
2. Takeover: New Orleans I went around and around in my head, and this one and #1 kept jockeying for position in my brain. But these top two Takeovers are literally note-perfect, from ship to shore, soup to nuts, top to tails. So if this is YOUR favorite? (Honestly, maybe 1 person I know who loves wrestling as much as I do will even see this mess). I'm here for you, and I understand. But this show has TWO 5-star matches from the Wrestling Observer, and I don't ever agree with that. In this case, I agree with BOTH, in the North American Championship ladder match, and the first (and so far, BEST) match in the Gargano/Ciampa feud. Everything. Is. Amazing. Shayna Bazsler became Women's Champion after BEAST-MODING her SHOULDER back INTO IT'S SOCKET to show that, YES, she gets pro-wrestling. Roderick Strong shocked the world (and the System) by joining the Undisputed Era and becoming the final Chaos Emerald needed to make that stable Super Sonic. Aleister Black took the championship from Andrade "Cien" Almas and SMILED, I fucking SAW IT! And it all depends on what you want from your wrestling, but Gargs/Tamps might actually be the best main event in Takeover history, at least from a storytelling standpoint. The crutch, the neckbrace. Each man going back to their DIY roots (the tag team - they didn't build another ring when that one broke), and then sitting side-by-side, like they did at the Cruiserweight Classic. Brothers. Completely spent. Destroyed. No one but each other. And then Ciampa shits any chance at redemption up the goddamn wall, cementing his own destruction. Every. Bit. Counts.
and #1...
Takeover: New York For a whole bunch of other wrestling fans, this has the greatest main event in Takeover history. But first, let's take a minute to appreciate how lucky we are, or were, that NXT exists. It justfies the existence of WWE, artistically, almost by itself. If this one's only slightly worse than New Orleans, it is argued, it's that the North American title ladder match was TOO good, and hurt every other match on the card. It has been argued. Not by me, but this one is somehow the most perfectly paced, perfectly sized wrestling card, on its own, ever. Every match, through alchemy or magic, manages to enthrall the crowd equally, and completely. The Viking Raiders vs. Grumpy Smaller Undertaker and the Human Pinball was off the hook incredible, and that warm "thank you" feeling has translated, currently to a man trapped in a room and a man trapped in Vince McMahon's scorn for smaller wrestlers, respectively. Matt Riddle and Velveteen Dream put on an absolute fantasy match, pitting the best of MMA vs. the best of WWE-style theatricality, and adds to the complete, demented character-world of this brand, and the fact that Dream WINS against one of the hottest new prospects is so deserved, and shows that he can, and will, shine forever brighter. Then AAAAGH WALTER vs. Pete Dunne! WALTER LAYS into poor Dunne, his chops alone having you believe that after the match, he's going to run into the arena's parking lot to FIGHT THE CARS. Then Shirai vs. Baszler vs. Sane vs. Belair and goddammit how do I even expound on that without crashing thesarus.com? And then Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole wrestled for. 40. MINUTES. With Gargano as the defacto heel because it was allegedly Cole's time. And by the match's end, he had the crowd more behind him than maybe they ever had been before. Is it a bit much? Yes. Too many kickouts? Probably. But it stands as the apex of Johnny Wrestling's journey. After everything had been taken from him: DIY, his health, his sanity, even his chance at revenge...the only thing he has left is the NXT Championship. And in that moment, he is invincible, he is more than enough.
What a show. What a host of shows.
Thanks for reading, everyone.

She didn't remember arriving here... The last thing she recalled was how bad her fingers hurt while she tried carving words into the wall with a broken syringe.  She'd spent what felt like several hours in the bathroom but had only been about one hour.
"Fuck..." She rested on the edge of the toilet as she dry heaved a couple times - letting herself fall to the floor for a brief moment as she tried to figure out if she had anything left to chuck up. Gene felt like what most people imagined dying to feel like...The few bites of food she'd been able to keep down since her tongue burning incident was all lost as soon as they'd started plying her with drugs - She didn't know what was in the syringe but there was a high followed by a low that reminded of her of food poisoning.
Gene slowly pulled herself off the cold tile despite how refreshing it felt against her skin and weakly stumbled back into her hotel room as she glanced out the window for a brief moment before everything began to spin and blur again and stumbling and staggering and with a loud creak, falling onto the bed. curling up into a ball and holding her stomach... The distorted sounds of the TV on in the other room filled her head as she laid there trying not to think about the pain in her stomach and arms.
'Genevieve Rivers, daughter of Karen and Steel Rivers. Model and designer in Port Lyndon is still missing. Authorities originally believed her current romantic partner was responsible but with further leads they are saying now that they believe that he was also abducted in a bid to frame him for her disappearance.."
The voice faded as she passed out again - the pain was to much to deal with right now...
-----
Laz glanced across to the other side of his sports car where Murphy despite his protests had finally dosed off as there wasn't enough coffee left in the city to keep him awake. He'd been going for three weeks straight practically and then some...
He'd already managed to paint a massive target on his back by breaking several people's bones and setting a drug lab on fire... His tiredness only made his anger more delirious. Laz was fond to have a moment of silence as he drove... Him and his men knew Blacklight better anyways - He was confident that someone would find the breadcrumb trail Gene was leaving.
The words usually were short or a small sentence; 'Gunshot, men dead, new man :c, pain, drugged, black car, white seat, i broke the mirror.'  It wasn't incredibly informational but Murphy knew Gene enough that it kept them right on her trail as they knew what to look for.
They knew she was on some hard drugs just from the few words she left and that'd given the best lead as they knew the person who orchestrated this now - well. His code name 'Zeus'... Laz hadn't heard of him and if Murphy had he didn't say anything but that didn't really matter to him right now anyways, Laz noted how badly he cared about Genevieve. He'd noted how he practically died inside every time he answered his phone as if someone would tell him she was dead...
Laz sighed, he hadn't felt that yet but he knew of someone who almost made him feel that way and if she stayed around - he'd probably feel exactly the same way Murphy did about Gene. The buzzing of his own phone bringing him from his thoughts as he glanced at it and reached over, nudging Murphy's leg a couple times until he woke suddenly, sitting upright and quickly trying to compose himself. "What?" He asked quickly and harshly.
Laz turned the car into a parking lot as he turned and pulled down a side road to cut down there time before speaking calmly. "Found the car, love.  Ras' is almost there to check it out and the boys are watching it."  Murphy pulled himself upright as the adrenaline instantly returned and the anger brewed.
"Location, What's the location like?" He asked as he rubbed his face and tried to shake off whatever tiredness remained.  "It's a shitty hotel above the only casino that Faust doesn't own. Makes sense since your boss seems to have Faust on a short leash right now... They're probably running out of places to keep her. Imagine that generic hotel you see in every single movie. It's like that."
---
Genevieve woke up several times off and on as she heard voices outside the door talking about about things.
Monroe slamming his hand against a table with a sick grin on his lips. "We'll torture the bitch and get it out of her... Her parents pay for half her fucking lifestyle, it's obvious. They have to have a connected account and her parents are inept - they haven't put a hold on anything."
The withdrawal was rough as she laid there, in and out until she felt weight on top of her and gasped a little bit, panicking. The room still spinning and the blurred figure of the man on top of her freaking her out as she tried to claw and hit the man but her wrists were already tied together again above her head - they knew how combative she was now.
"Shh...Shh.." She felt a finger on her lips as her eyes slowly focused on the man; Monroe. He'd shot the other two men in the head and for a brief second just due to his appearance she thought he was Murphy as they dressed similarly and his hair was only slightly longer than Murphy's.  He wasn't Murphy, not at all...  He was sick and sadistic and practically got a hard on the first time he choked her and hit her. She just felt sick in his presence and she knew he was dangerous. He was smarter than the other men she'd been with who already were professionals.
Monroe's hair fell into his eyes as he leaned over her, kissing her neck and whispering to her as he slid his hands along her arms and got a reaction of her trying to break his grip despite not having the strength or the use of her hands. "I can see why he likes you... I'd apologize, but, I'm honestly going to enjoy hurting you..." His voice was soft and calm as he spoke and contrasted against the sharp pain she suddenly felt.
What happened next was horrific as they tried to break what was left of her... To get the info they wanted...
----
Murphy practically hopped out of the moving car as they arrived, his breath rough. He knew he had to focus past his anger and stress - If Gene was even alive he knew that she'd probably end up in a hostage situation by the end of this... He didn't plan on letting anymore of her blood spill. He impatiently waited for Laz to catch up as he walked around the car quickly, grimacing. Stupid neon lights. The reflection practically was giving him a headache...  He walked to the passenger side and noted the cracked window, it looked like someone punched it. He'd have to try to remember to tell Gene how good she did... If he got to tell her.
He shook off that thought as Laz caught up from parking and led the way inside to the kitchen that looked - disgusting.  Murphy was glad he wasn't on the table side of things here as he looked at the layer of water and sludge on the floor and several dead rats piled in a corner next to the box of rat poison right beside the canister of flour or some cooking ingredient.   His eyes glanced around at the cocaine resting beside the fish and even blood splatter on the wall.
The rough moan behind him made him jump as he glanced back to see a girl up against the wall getting fucked by some dirty hobo looking guy... It was just, disgusting.  He held the gag in his mouth as Laz handed a handful of cash to the man standing there who screamed in what sounded like Japanese or Chinese and after a moment several women appeared in similar maid outfits as Laz held up his phone with a picture of Gene and held up what looked to be about two hundred dollars.  Two of the women starting to talk but of course neither one of them really knew what they were talking about.
Murphy  grimaced a little as he didd't see how this was going to help... He knew a slim amount of Chinese that stopped somewhere after 'hello, goodbye, thank you'  and even then he couldn't really recall how to pronounce it.   Laz however was as calm as ever as he held up his hand with a 'one second' gesture as a disinterested and tired voice answered. "What...?"   Laz just raised his hand and made a 'repeat' motion with his hand as the women started talking and repeating what they'd said quickly as they reached for the money a couple times but Laz kept it out of reach until it was 'translated' and then the voice of a girl in the background yelling "DAAAD!" resulted in the call ending and Laz glanced to Murphy as he handed over the money. "Tenth floor, 402. Three men, Rude man who 'looks like you with tattoos and longer hair.' "
Murphy grimaced and felt his stomach flip over as he began walking towards the elevator and clutched the gun in his holster - he fully expected that Gene would be missing fingers and limbs or worse. Laz catching up quickly.
"I'm all good getting shot for you, Man. Who are we dealing with? Friend?" He said 'friend' with mounting sarcasm as Murphy punched the floor in and paced back and forth as much as he could in the junky elevator. "Monroe worked with me - He's psychotic, I don't even know a better word to explain how disturbed he is. He freaking tortured a woman for two days over a fucking missing bag of weed or some shit. Rita was pissed and literally was going to shoot him but he skipped town before she could. He loves torturing women and gets off on it." Murphy said as he slammed his hand against the elevator as if it'd make it rise faster.
He didn't even realize he was running until he got to the door number in question - the tv turned up but even with it loudly blasting behind the door he could hear Gene.
"Aaah!" Her scream was harsh and rough but it brought Murphy a bizarre comfort  - He was upset of course she was being hurt but it meant she was in there... He found himself freeze however as he debated how he wanted to do this.
"I can take a bullet." Laz said quietly as he double checked and cocked his own gun.  "I'll go first and take out who I can, Stealth as long as possible. Sound good?" As much as Murphy felt uncertain about him - He knew enough about supernatural bullshit to know if someone says they can take the bullet that it's a better option.  He made a mental note to himself in that thought that he'd have to consider involving Rayne when he found this 'Zeus' cocksucker.
Laz slipped the lock easily and went in first. His footsteps light and careful as he aimed his gun towards the room, Murphy watching his back somewhat but focused towards the door he heard another cry of pain behind.
And in seconds the gunshots started.  Laz went first and fired two shots taking out one of the 'thugs' and the third shot he fired at least injured the second one before he hesitated as both of them were to close to the blonde crying heap on the bed he assumed was Gene. The bullet fired at him was fast and took him right in the side, making him drop. Monroe focused on Gene as he untied her and lifted her off the bed. Gene screaming as the drugs made the gunshots and all the movement freak her out. "No - No - No  - No " She mumbled as she struggled against his grip.
Murphy was careful as he rested against the wall and saw Laz fall, He looked dead... He didn't have time to think about it as he got and opening and fired, dropping the other one and leaving just him, Monroe and Gene... Gene. He felt himself almost drop the gun when he saw how horrible she looked...
Gene didn't even realize how bad she looked as she practically relied on Monroe to even stand and was completely unaware of the gun pressed to her head as her eyes floated around the room in a blur... Her clothes was ripped off and her bare body was visible. unfortunately. There was so much blood that Murphy couldn't even tell what was injured. He had to focus, his eyes glued with Monroe's as he entered cautiously.
"Just, Let her go." He stated calmly - He wanted to scream, so badly.  He wanted to cuss him out and scream at him but the gun pressed to Gene's head was the problem with that... He had to keep his cool until Gene was at least safe.  He knew he wasn't going to give him the sweet relief of a bullet wound though.
"Gene, Babe... I'm here." He stated, he didn't know if she'd be able to process it but he hoped she would, Monroe rolling his eyes. "Really...?  Can't you tell how fucked up she is? She don't even know her own fucking name..." He snorted, laughing as he tapped the gun against her head.
'I'm here..' the words lingered as a blur in Gene's mind as she trembled in Monroe's arms... Though, some part of her knew... She felt so miserable but she pushed past it as she weakly and sorely lifted her foot and started stomping on his and her fingers pushing against his arm. Her strength was so limited or at least it felt that way but it was exactly what Murphy needed - as soon as she lifted her leg and pushed against his arms it let him fire, hitting Monroe's leg, right through the knee. The pain stunning him long enough as Gene stumbled forward a couple steps before falling onto the bed somewhat, her legs still half off it. Didn't matter. Murphy grabbed Monroe's gun and tossed it over to Laz who was awake again but hadn't gotten up yet and dragged Monroe into the bathroom and the sounds - Somehow the sound of a beating turned wetter and wetter as it went on. It sounded like Murphy was punching a bowl of wet meat.  He came out with a fury in his eyes as he grabbed the curling iron that was resting on the nightstand and the knife and stormed back into the bathroom, slamming the door shut - The screams were horrific - almost worse then the ones that Gene had made herself.
--------
Laz found out in the news later what exactly they found in that bathroom and the answer was something that resulted in several police officers puking... A man who'd been so brutally beaten there was no way to identify him and they were still finding his teeth - one stuck in the wall and one in the shower drain it'd flown so far away. The burns on his body from the curling iron were severe and it'd appeared that once his teeth were all broken it'd been inserted into his throat on the highest setting.  His fingers bent into positions that were completely abnormal. And there wasn't a shred of evidence to be found aside from Gene's hair and blood leading to them assuming it was just another gang member or something.
--------
Murphy's eyes lingered on Gene as he tiredly laid in the large arm chair... Rich people hospitals were great.  He'd been catered to by Gene's parents like a fucking king since he'd been back but personally he found himself delighted in the sound of the rain pattered on the windows... He'd never been so happy to hear it in his entire life.
"S-Skye..." Gene mumbled a little bit as she opened her eyes before closing them quickly, wincing.  She felt slightly less horrible... Murphy wanted to grumble about her using his name but he let it go as he sighed, leaning over and taking her hand. "I - I'm sorry..."  He admitted, His throat dry as it tightened a little bit.  Her fingers tightened around his a little bit. "Shh.."  She made the sound weakly as she closed her eyes, Pulling his hand weakly over and cuddling it a little as she dosed back off.

‘Get out of my fucking way!’
The words that you were born with, tattooed along your wrist. The words that your parents adamantly covered up through your childhood, careful to not let any of the other kids see in case the word caught on. Those words made it difficult for you during the summer, wearing long sleeved shirts or hoodies, rarely going swimming. When you were finally old enough to know what it was you instantly held a grudge against your soulmate for cursing you with such a horrible thing to have written on your skin. You told yourself that when the day came and you heard that phrase that you would have something even worse to snap back at them. But if felt like that day would never come. The years dragged on, and your senior year of high school rolled around. Your family had decided to move at the beginning of the summer. A job opportunity opened up and just like that you were uprooted and placed in a new town. On one hand, you had left close friends behind that you promised to keep in touch with, and on the other hand you knew that a new town meant new people. And new people meant the possibility of finding the asshole who made you cover up your arm since birth.
Your day started out normal enough, alarm blaring, throwing on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and your favourite sweater as you hurried into the kitchen to start the day, hastily made breakfast and rushed to get ready in time to catch the bus. After an entire summer of sleeping in, the weight of waking up so early for the first day of school was weighing heavily on your shoulders. You knew what it would be like, going to school in senior year with no friends. You sat near the back of the bus, watching kids excitedly chat to each other, sharing what they did over the summer and talking about how amazing it was to see each other again. It made your stomach churn as you realized you would have to make an entirely new friend group or suffer through senior year alone. The moment you pushed into the school with the rest of the students getting off their buses you felt the anxiety of being alone finally set in and you tried to keep your head down as you headed to the office just inside the doors.
You approached the front desk, aware of the girl in front of you chatting with the secretary. The was very pretty, you realized instantly as you stood a few feet behind her. Long dirty blond hair, the front pulled back out of her face by a few hair-clips, a textured dark pink sweater, a pair of light blue jeans with a few stars scribbled along the cuffs, and a pair of worn in grey sneakers on her feet. She was leaning over the counter slightly, a happy smile on her face, “Sorry, I just wasn’t sure where we were meeting since Mr. Englund retired last year.”
“It’s no problem, dear,” The secretary smiled back as she typed away at her computer before looking up at the girl, “Jazz band has been moved to room 208 this semester.”
“Thanks a bunch,” The girl says before turning and almost running straight into you.
“Shit, sorry,” You say quickly, stepping back as you cringed, “I shouldn’t have been standing right behind you. I wasn’t thinking-”
“It’s fine, really, uh…” The girl responded, trailing off before she quirked a smile, “Sorry, I don’t think I’ve seen you before. Are you new or am I just really not as observant as I thought I was?”
“Yeah, I’m f/n l/n. I moved here over the summer,” You explained, pulling your bag a little closer.
“I’m Zoe,” She says simply, folding her hands together in front of her, “If you don’t know anyone else here yet, feel free to come and sit with me and my friends at our table during lunch. We’re very nice people, I promise.”
“I’ll think about it,” You smile slightly, “Thanks.”
“It was nice meeting you,” She says, giving a small wave as she walked around you, hurrying towards what you assumed was her first class.
“Nice meeting you too,” You called after her before turning to the secretary, approaching as you began rooting for papers in your bag, “Hi, I’m f/n l/n. I was just wondering if I could get my schedule?”
“I’m sorry dear, our printer is broken at the moment but I can send a pdf version to your email if you’d like?” She suggested.
“Yeah, that sounds fine,” Pulling out your phone before you looked up at her, “Do you need my email?”
“I believe your preferred email is already attached to your student account,” She says, typing something out on the computer before looking up at you, “If there’s any issues with it, please feel free to come and let me know.”
You nodded and turned, walking from the room, saying a “thanks” behind you as you went.
Trying to keep your head down as you moved through the hallways, you pulled up your schedule on your phone, making a mental note to print it out in the computer lab later. Classes were uneventful, some ice breakers were attempted by the teachers, most of the kids participated in them including yourself but no one went out of their way to talk to you as you expected. When lunch eventually rolled around you found yourself standing off to the side of the lunchroom, clutching your lunch tray in your hands nervously. You had scanned the room three times and you didn’t see Zoe and contemplated if maybe she had lied to you and didn’t want you to sit with them and that she and her friends were now hiding from you somewhere else. Slowly you began making your way to the emptiest table you could find. A boy sat on one end of it, long hair hanging around his face as he stared down at an open book. From across the room he visibly tensed as if he could sense you headed in his direction and he looked up at you, eyes shining curiously.
Before you get even get remotely close to his table an arm caught yours and you looked over to see Zoe, a smile on her face, “Hey, sorry I was late. I wanted to talk to my teachers about maybe switching classes.”
“It’s okay,” You said quickly before glancing back at the boy who had his eyes narrowed, glaring back down at his book, “Who’s that?”
“That’s my brother, Connor. Trust me, you do not want to go anywhere near him. He’s a psychopath,” She cringed as if mentioning her brother physically hurt her. Zoe nodded towards the side of the room at a table occupied by a few people, “This way.” You cast Connor one last glance before heading off with Zoe to her table. As you approached the people there turned to look at you, shifting over so you and Zoe could join them. Zoe spoke up first as you took your seats, “Guys, this is y/n. I invited them to join us for lunch cause they’re new. Y/n, this is Kevin, Rosa, and Alana.”
The group chorused hellos and you gave a small wave back, “Hi.”
“So, y/n. Where are you from?” Alana asked, leaning forward in her seat with a smile.
“I moved from (hometown) late this June,” You say as you adjusted your food tray so it was closer to you before picking up a jello cup and a spoon.
“Never been there,” Alana said as she stabbed some of her salad with her fork, “I’ve heard good things about it though.”
You shrugged, “You’re not missing much.”
Zoe perked up suddenly as if she remembered something, nudging you, “Oh, show us your schedule so we can see if we’re in any of your classes.”
Plucking your phone from your pocket, you toss it onto the table in front of Zoe before eating a scoop of jello, casting your gaze over your shoulder at Connor who was still alone and still reading his book. As you stared at him you began to feel bad for him, sitting all alone, which was exactly what you were dreading doing today. Part of you wanted to go and say ‘hi’ but you didn’t want to be rude to Zoe, a potential friend. Additionally, the things she said about Connor cast a shadow of doubt over you and kept you in your seat.
“You’re in Kev’s math class with Ms. Bondy,” Zoe says, looking up from your phone, “And Alana is in your English class.”
“At least I won’t be alone like all my other classes today,” You say with a small smile before looking at Zoe, “Thanks for this. I was honestly kind of terrified of trying to make it through senior year by myself.”
She smiled back at you, “It’s no problem. If you ever need anything feel free to ask any of us. Especially Alana. She is the smartest person I know.”
Alana waved a hand dismissively at Zoe before smiling wide, “I know I am.”
“So humble,” Rosa speaks up, returning the wide smile.
“I’m not going to lie to our new acquaintance,” Alana beams, turning her attention to you, “I’m taking almost entirely AP classes so if you need help in any subject just let me know and I’d be glad to help.”
“Thanks for the heads up,” You chuckled, resting your head in your hand.
“Yikes,” Zoe muttered beside you, staring down at your phone.
Your smile wavered and you looked at her in worry, “What?”
“You’re taking art with Mr. Reid?” She says, looking at you, brow furrowed.
“Yeah, it’s my elective. Why?” You asked, suddenly anxious, “Is he a horrible teacher or something?”
“No, it’s just that Connor is in his class this semester too,” Zoe responds, nibbling her lip before looking back at the phone, “My advice is to just try and steer clear of him. Sit on the opposite side of the room. Don’t make eye contact.”
“Is he really that bad?” You picked at your food, losing your appetite.
“Honestly, he’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me,” Zoe says and she sounded completely sincere. She sighed, and looked back at you, “He’s got this explosive temper and anything can set him off. And when he gets angry he throws things and lashes out at anyone in the way which is me most of the time.”
“That sounds awful…” You muttered, glancing back the him to find that he was already gone from his table, a few new people filing into the space.
“He is,” She says, shaking her head, “Sorry, he’s just…I don’t like him. At some point he just became this monster.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked,” You say quickly.
“It’s fine. Really,” Zoe says with a weak smile.
“As exciting as this conversation is, I’m going to head to English class a few minutes early to make sure I get a seat in the front row. Are you coming, y/n?” Alana asks as she rises to her feet, moving her empty salad bowl onto her tray and picking it up.
“Oh, y-yeah. Yes,” You get up and glance down at your almost full tray of food. All of which seemed unappetizing to you at the moment so you ended up dumping it into the garbage on your way out of the room with Alana. You turned back to Zoe and gave a small wave which she returned happily before you disappeared out the cafeteria doors with Alana.
Alana was talkative throughout the entire period, you sat in the front row with her and she constantly had her hand raised to ask the teacher about different topics you would be covering over the course. The next period flew by and was equally as uneventful as the rest of the day. When the bell signaled the end of the day, you made your way towards the computer lab so you could print off your schedule while the rest of the student body flooded out the doors to catch their buses. You hoped this wouldn’t take that long so that you would still be able to catch your bus but as you approached the door of the computer lab and heard people talking inside, you felt like it was going to take longer than expected.
“Is this yours? I found it on the printer, it’s-it’s uh…’Dear Evan Hansen’, that’s you name, right?”
You saw Connor talking to a smaller boy who had a cast on his arm and you assumed that this was the ‘Evan’ who wrote the letter.
“Yeah, n-no-no, it’s just a stupid- it’s just this paper I have to write and it’s this stupid assignment-” Evan began stuttering, panicking as he reached towards the paper clutched in Connor’s hands.
“Because there’s Zoe…?” Connor’s voice was small and your brow furrowed, wondering why this kid ‘Evan’ would have written about Zoe, “Uh…is this about my sister?”
“Uh-N-No!” Evan reached for it again, but Connor held it back out of his reach. You stiffened in the doorway, watching the events unfold as you tugged at the sleeve of your sweater nervously. The body language Evan was giving off and the way he held himself showed just how terrified he was as you tried to figure out what exactly was going on.
“You wrote this because you knew that I would find it?” Connor stated.
“What?” Evan honestly sounded confused, arms drooping.
“Yeah-you uh…you saw that I was the only other person in the computer lab so you wrote this and you-” Connor began spiraling and rambling as his eyes burned holes through Evan, “-printed this out so I would find it.”
Evan shook his head, brows furrowing, “Why…why would I do that-”
“So, I would read some creepy shit you wrote about my sister and freak out, right?” Connor snapped, cutting him off as tears well in his eyes, “And then you can tell everybody that I’m crazy!”
“What?” Evan’s voice was small, and he seemed horrified.
“Right?!” Connor yelled.
“No, I-” Evan tried to speak but Connor shoved past him.
“Fuck you!” He called over his shoulder, letter still clenched in his hand as he rushed towards the door. “Get out of my fucking way!” Connor snapped, shoving past you as he ran from the computer lab.
Without realizing what he had said you quickly turned and rushed after him, reaching out to him, “Fuck- Connor, are you okay?”
You saw his entire body tense at those words and he stopped moving, standing a few feet away from you. The hallway was empty and it seemed like everything around you had stopped. It was quiet and you were momentarily confused at to why those words made him react this way. Then it dawned on you and you looked down at your arm, slowly rolling up the sleeve to look at the words tattooed there. ‘Get out of my fucking way!’
When you looked back up at Connor he was facing you, staring down at your mark as he unbuttoned the top two buttons of his undershirt and pulled the collar of his shirt back to reveal the words ‘Fuck- Connor, are you okay?’ written in bold text. After a moment both marks faded out of existence, and his arm dropped back to his side, the letter he had been holding fell to the floor silently.
“You were the person staring at me in the cafeteria,” He looked at you, watching as if trying to decide if you were deceiving him in some way and had somehow planned this whole thing.
You flushed and you took your eyes off his collarbone, meeting his eyes as you quickly thought of an excuse, “I wanted to know what you were reading.”
His raised an eyebrow in question, “And here I thought you were checking me out.”
Your cheeks burned and you looked away from him, unsure of what to say to him.
“Fahrenheit 451.”
“What?” You looked up at him in confusion.
“The book I was reading,” He says as he looks down at his bag, “It was ‘Fahrenheit 451’. One of my favorites.”
“A fan of the classics?” You ask curiously.
“Books are better than people,” He states simply before glancing back at you.
“I don’t know. I think some people can be pretty cool,” You say, smiling warmly, “I’m y/n.”
The smallest of smiles pulled up at the corners of his mouth, “I’m Connor. But, I guess you already knew that.”
“Yeah, your sister has a very strong opinion of you,” You said, thinking back to the things she said about him.
Connor let out a breath, cringing slightly, “You were talking to her about me?”
“Only cause I asked about you,” You say as if trying to dismiss it but when you saw his eyebrows raise in question, your face heated up, “I mean, Zoe said we were in the same art class and seemed super distressed about it so I asked her why. So, I wasn’t just asking about you because I thought you were cute or something- but- shit- I’m not saying you’re not cute. I actually think you’re super attractive- I just…” You let out a breath and shook your head as you tried to stop your rambling, “Sorry, I’m just making this super weird…uh…”
He scoffed and looked away from you as if something on the wall was suddenly incredibly interesting as his cheeks flushed with colour, “Fuck off…”
“Do you want to go for a coffee, maybe?” You asked quickly before you psyched yourself out.
He seemed surprised, looking back at you quickly, “What?”
“I mean…we are sort of destined to be together, so I’d like to maybe hang out with you? Get to know you better? Maybe we could talk about our favourite books?” You suggest, a nervous smile on your face, “We could suggest some books to each other too? It could be a regular thing. We could meet every few days and talk about what we thought of each other’s book suggestions? Like book club? But uh…more like dates?”
“Dates?” He questions again, brow furrowing.
Your smile fell, “Fuck, you hate the idea, right? I’m sorry, I just got a little excited about spending time with you. We can do anything you want. We don’t even have to go for coffee.”
“It’s not that. I just…” Connor trailed off, jaw setting as his eyes darkened, “I had something planned for today after school…” He swallowed thickly and looked back to you, noticing the concern on your face.
“We don’t need to go if you had plans,” You say quickly, not wanting to take him away from whatever it was he had planned.
“No…” He said firmly, before letting out a soft breath, “I’d rather spend the day with you.”
“Really? I’m not going to keep you from anything?” You ask, still worried you were keeping him from something important.
“If anything, you’re stopping me from doing something stupid,” His eyes eased as he stared at you.
“So…it’s a date?” A smile worked its way onto your face hopefully.
He cracked a smile and chuckled breathlessly, “Yeah. It’s a date.”

Sincerely Me
Welcome to my fic that is using a title that is overused! Anyways, this is based off a set of one-shots I posted, originally, on my other account.
Enjoy!
Read on AO3
Evan kept his head down as he walked to the school’s computer lab. He had to quickly finish his ‘self-help’ letter before his mom picked him up for his therapy session with Dr. Sherman. Slowly, Evan pushed open the door to the lab and shuffled over to a computer on the right side. Silently, he logged into the computer, found the google chrome search logo, clicked on it, and signed onto his google drive account. He moved the cursor over to the google doc containing his letter. After he clicked on it, he watched as a new paged popped up, and his letter loaded onto the screen. Evan quickly read over the letter, and noticed that he left off with:
Maybe if I could just talk to her. Maybe, nothing would be different at all.
He silent thought for a second, tapping his fingers on the table. Eventually, he began to type out the last part.
I wish everything was different. I wish I was a part of something. I wish that anything I said mattered to anyone. I mean, let’s face it, would anyone even notice if I just disappeared tomorrow?
He stopped typing briefly. Evan knows this isn’t what his therapist had in mind for him to write. These letters are supposed to say the good things in life, but when there aren’t any good things, why make it up? Why not just tell the damn truth? No one would even care anyways.
Sincerely, your best and dearest friend, me.
Suddenly, his phone began to ring. Evan fumbled with it in his pocket. He quickly checked the caller ID and was relieved to see it was his mom calling him.
“H-hello?” He asked. Evan has always hated phone calls, can't stand them. Even though it was just his mom calling, he still stumbled on his words.
“Evan, I’m not going to be able to bring you to your appointment. They needed extra help at the hospital and I was the only one on duty. Also right afterward I’m going to class, there are leftovers in the fridge for dinner.” Heidi Hansen rushed her words as if she really needs to get back to work. Which, Evan assumed, she probably does.
God, Evan thought, I'm such a burden, she wouldn't need to work so hard if I wasn't around. I have so many problems. She has to spend too much money on my pills and therapy, I hate it.
"O-okay, yeah, I’ll ea-t that.” Even while he says this, Evan knows he won’t.
“Did you finish your letter sweetie?" Evan knows that all his mom wants is for him to get better. However, he also knows that she knows she'd have a better life without him.
“Yeah, I just pr-printed it n-ow.” He says, clicking on the little printer button on the top right of the screen.
“That’s fantastic sweetie. I’ve gotta go now, but I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” Totally fantastic. Except for the fact that his letter basically states that he wants to just disappear and never come back.
Evan nods his head but then realizes she probably couldn’t even see him. Stupid. “Okay, love you.”
“Love you too honey.” And with that, she hangs up the phone.
Evan sighs once again, and then, he stands up to go and grab his letter. Before he can even take a step, Connor Murphy appears in front of him. Oh great. Evan really hopes he's still not mad about this morning. Connor had thought that Evan laughed at him, and so he shoved him to the ground. However, what had really happened was that Evan didn't laugh at him, He would never laugh at him. He would never laugh at anyone really. Evan was just nervous, and so he let out a nervous chuckle. Because of this, Evam have a mental freak out moment. He still didn’t know if Connor’s here to yell at him some more or what but he was absolutely terrified.
“Evan? Right?” Connor asks, looking Evan up and down, then into his eyes. Evan shivered slightly and nodded. Evan didn't shiver because Connor was scary, he's actually really pretty. Like his sister, Zoe. Wait, not the time Evan. Shut up. Evan looked back at him, and he noticed something. Connor seemed like he was trying to tell Evan something, but then seems to think better if it and instead says, “How’d you break your arm?”
It was an easy question to answer, Evan had practiced the answer many times, but he still stuttered.
“Oh, uh, I f-fell. Out of a tr-tree.” Evan stuttered out, picking at the hem of his shirt. Evan hates lying, but he didn't want people to see how broken he really was.
“Well, that’s the saddest fucking thing I’ve ever heard. Oh my god!” He laughs out.
Oh, how wonderful. Evan thinks. Now I'm an even bigger loser.
Evan nodded, “Yeah, uh, yeah.”
Connor glances at Evan’s cast, and he seems to notice no one has signed it.
Shit, now I not just a loser, but a friendless loser. Evan doesn’t know how this could get any worse.
“No one’s signed your cast.” Connor points out as if Evan hadn’t already realized no one liked him.
“Yeah, uh, I kn-know.” Evan just wishes he could stop stuttering, dammit!
“I’ll sign it.” Connor offers, probably pitying Evan. Defiantly pitying him. Most people did.
“Oh, you, you don’t have to.” Evan mentally hits himself, what is he doing? He needs his mom to think he actually talked to people. Why is he telling him no?
Connor ignores him and He holds out a hand, expecting a sharpie. Thank God he's persistent.
Evan nods his head and then stuffed his hand into his pocket. He pulled out the unused sharpie and handed it to the taller boy.
He grips Evan’s hand and tugs it towards him. “Ow,” Evan mumbled.
“Sorry,” Connor seemed to have pushed it out. As if he's not used to saying sorry. Connor quickly scrawls out his name, filling up half of the blonds cast with it.
“Oh, thanks,” Evan said, with a kind of sarcastic, sort of thankful, and a bit of wanting to get the hell out of there asap tone of voice. Thankfully though, Connor doesn’t seem to notice and smiles at the shorter boy. However, it’s more of a grimace. He then takes a piece of paper from his bag and lifts it up.
“Is this yours? I saw it at the printer. ‘Dear Evan Hansen,’ You're last name is Hansen, right?”
“Uh, yeah that’s mine, um, th-thanks.” Evan reached to take it, but Connor pulls back.
“Because there’s Zoe? What the hell,” He whispers this, seemingly confused, and Evan begins to freak out. Once again.
“C-connor, please give that ba-back.”
“You did this on purpose!” Connor’s yelling now, Evan hopes he can maybe calm him down?
“What?” Very good Evan, ask a fucking question. This is super helpful.
“Yeah, you saw I was the only other person in here so you printed this wanting me to see it.” Evan knows that Connor is totally misunderstanding the situation. Evan also knows that he has no clue on how to deal with this.
“No, I-”
“You were hoping I’d freak out right? So you can tell everyone what a fucking freak I am?”
“No, please-”
“Well FUCK YOU!” The long-haired boy pushed past Evan and runs out of the computer lab. All Evan can do is stare at him as he runs, forgetting that he still has his letter.
“You what?” Jared asks from the other side of the phone, clearly enjoying the situation that Evan had gotten himself into.
“I-I printed my letter out at school and Co-connor saw it. He thought I wanted t-to get him ma-mad! He saw that I me-mentioned Zoe, and-”
“Wait, so he read some crazy sex letter you wrote about his sister? That’s messed up.” Evan starts to really hope that Jared stops laughing soon.
“It wasn’t a sex le-letter Jared! It’s for my therapy-therapist.” Evan is trying to explain this the best he can, but Jared doesn't like to listen. He never listens.
“You write sex letters to your therapist? That's kinky.”
“JARED!”
“Whatever man, but why are you telling me this?” Evan can imagine that Jared is probably lying upside down on his bed, playing video games. He's definitely not paying attention to their conversation at all.
“Because you’re my cl-only family fr-friend.” That's all they’ll ever be because Jared knows that Evan is too much of a weirdo.
“Yeah, okay, I gotta go dude. Good luck with that sex letter!”
“IT’S NOT A-” Before Evan can finish, Jared hangs up the phone. Evan groans, tossing his own phone onto his bed.
How the hell is he supposed to convince Connor Murphy that that letter was meant to cause no harm.
Also, how is he supposed to get it back from him before he tells the whole school? And, once the school knows how will he live through the taunts? No, wait, forget the jokes. Connor is probably gonna kill him.
God Dammit.
Connor stared at the orange bottle in his hand as he sat on his bed. For once it was made, he wanted to feel productive for his last few hours alive. He also had a box filled with all the stuff he had taken from Zoe over the years placed on his desk.  He has about an hour before Zoe gets home from jazz band practice, and his mom won’t be home for another two. Connor isn’t sure when his dad will be home, but it’ll probably be late, as usual.
Connor uncaps the bottle and empties all the pills into his open palm. With no more thought, he downs all the pills and lays back onto his bed, waiting for the effects to kick in.
Zoe Murphy usually considers herself a lucky girl. She’s lucky because she made jazz one as a freshman, and sits in the first chair. She’s lucky that she is smart enough to be in most senior classes. She’s lucky that Alana Beck actually considers her a friend. She’s lucky that her brother doesn’t follow through on his death threats.
Zoe Murphy is also lucky that she got out of jazz band earlier than usual. A lot usual. AT least, according to the doctors, she is. Is she had called the ambulance not even five minutes after she had, her brother would have had no chance of survival.
So yeah, Zoe Murphy is a lucky girl. Luck apparently just comes naturally to her, and even though her relationship with Connor has been torn to shreds years ago, she’s glad that she’s luckier than most. Really fucking glad.
“Yo, Evan, did you hear what happened to Murphy last night?” Those are the first words Evan hears out of Jared’s mouth on the second day of school. Evan shuts his locker and looks at his family friend. Jared is practically bouncing on the balls of his feet, gripping the straps of his backpack.
“N-no, what happened to-to him?”
“I’m not exactly sure, but you know Calvin Ferrell? Well he lives across from the Murphy’s and he told Kelly Petie who told Kyle Gold who I overheard telling Kevin Lakes that an ambulance showed up at their house around five last night, and Calvin saw Zoe Murphy running out with paramedics pushing a stretcher with Connor laying on it out of the house and into the ambulance. Calvin doesn’t know what happened to him but Connor isn’t at school and neither is Zoe. So obviously it was something really big right? I mean why else would paramedics be there?” Jared is much too enthusiastic about this.
“J-jared! Why do yo-you seem so, so ex-excited? Wh-what if he di-died. That wo-would be te-terr-terrible!” Evan whisper yells.
“Eh, I wouldn’t worry about it, I mean so what? No one likes him anyway.”
“Jared th-that isn’t nice! You sh-shouldn’t say, say things like that!” Evan remembers how alone he felt this past summer, and knows that whatever Connor was feeling is probably ten times worse than what he feels. He hopes Connor isn’t dead, he decides that if, no when, Connor gets back to school, Evan will try his best to try and brighten the brown haired boy’s day.
“Whatever tree boy, I’m going to class.” Jared shrugged his shoulders and left Evan standing in the hallway by himself. Evan sighs. He knows Jared fakes a lot of how he acts. He just wishes Jared was like he was when they were younger, his actual friend.
Dear Connor Murphy,
I heard about what happened the other week and I want you to know I failed as well, over the summer. You’re not alone.\
Sincerely Me.
Connor stared dumbfounded at the letter in his hands. It was his second day back after being out of school for three weeks, and he had no idea as to why a letter had fallen out of his letter. He was even more confused when he realized the letter was addressed to him and not whoever owned the locker next to him. Then after reading the two sentenced note, he felt something inside him. It wasn’t happiness at being recognized, it was more like relief. Someone out there, though he had no idea who knew in some way how he felt. And who wouldn’t get the smallest spark of hope after realizing that?
Evan watched from around the Corner as Connor neatly folded up the letter and placed it in his hoodie pocket. Then he saw the brown haired boy give a small smile, and Evan couldn’t help but smile as well.
For the next month, Evan continues to write letters to Connor. He writes the letters on Monday and Wednesdays after his homework, then on Tuesday and Thursday mornings he shoves them through the cracks in Connor’s locker. Evan know’s that Connor doesn’t check his locker until after third period, so he knows that he won’t be caught.
Sometimes the letters contain personal information as Evan knows that Connor doesn’t know it’s him, so he’s not worried, for once, about being taunted. Sometimes they just include small things that happen over the week. Usually, the Tuesday letters are the long ones, informing Connor about Evan’s weekend, the Thursday ones usually remind Connor how great he is.
Evan’s noticed that Connor is usually happier on the letter days. He’s also noticed that Connor skips school a lot, but he’s always there on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Connor has gotten a total of six letters so far.
The second one was almost as short as the first, giving Connor one simple tip on calming down.
Dear Connor Murphy,
Counting down from ten is always a great strategy to calm down, in my experience at least. Also, my mom, she does it a lot, especially when my dad tries to contact us. He’s very inconsiderate when he does.
Sincerely, Me
Connor felt like punching this guy’s dad after reading it.
The third letter talked a lot about trees, as did the fifth letter. The fourth told Connor that the mystery guy has a crush on a girl in junior year. He wondered if Zoe knew the girl as the letter never mentioned her name. The sixth letter was longer than usual. It seemed as though Letter Guy, as Connor now calls him, was stressing about something and just couldn’t stop talking. It started out about a math test the kid had, then there was a paragraph on why trees are so important to the environment, then two sentences wondering if Connor liked trees as much as he did, and it ended with five sentences of the guy apologizing as to how long the letter was. Connor thought it was hilarious, and kind of adorable. He kept that letter on his bedside table.
After the next two letters come, and Connor finds himself wondering who the guy is, he realizes that he might actually sort of like him. But he tries to ignore it for two reasons. First, why would this guy like him back, especially since he already likes someone else? Second, Connor doesn’t even know who writes the letter, how can he like someone he doesn’t know. However, Connor does know the letter guy, very well from all the information he writes down. He just doesn’t know his name or what he looks like.
Evan sits behind Connor in math class, which Evan actually quite enjoys. Math is fourth period, which means Connor comes in right after reading Evan’s notes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. This also means that Evan gets to see the small smile on Connor’s face due to the letters that he receives.Evan always enjoys seeing that smile. It tells him that he was once again successful in making Connor happy. Evan knows that it isn’t a permanent fix, but he also knows that it works for at least an hour. And an hour is better than nothing in his opinion.
After Thanksgiving break, Evan realizes that he hasn’t thought, or written, about Zoe in a month. This really confuses him, how can he go from fawning over the guitar player to never even thinking about her? He isn’t entirely sure.
That is, at least, until the first Thursday of December and Evan catches himself staring at the older Murphy all of math class. At first, Evan tells himself that he was just making sure his letters were still making Connor happy. It wasn’t until Evan was in his room, trying to go to bed while still thinking about the long-haired boy that he shoots up, now fully awake.
“Fuck I like the school shooter.”
Which then leads to Evan actually slapping himself.
“Dammit Evan, stop listening to Jared.”
Evan continues to mutter to himself about the fact that he has just figured out that he is bi. However, he isn’t just bi, no, he’s really really bi for the kid he writes letters to, to make him feel better.
That’s when his mother, Heidi Hansen, Knocks on the door.
“Sweetie are you alright?” She asks, concerned that her son is mumbling to himself at eleven at night.
“Yeah, I’m fine!” Evan shouts back, quickly laying back down.
That night Evan falls asleep with only the thought of Connor Murphy on his mind.
The next letter Connor received he was surprised to see that the mystery writer told him he wasn’t into the junior girl anymore. At that, Connor walked to his math class with a small spring in his step. He knows that the letter boy might not be into guys, but he doesn’t like the junior anymore, he has a slight chance now.
When he gets to math, the kid that sits behind him, Evan Hansen, already has a notebook out. Connor remembers in middle school when he had a small crush on the blond haired kid. He can’t help but hope that Evan was the mystery writer.
Connor spends all of math wondering what Evan’s hand in his would feel like.
When Connor walked into math, Evan couldn’t help but blush at Connor’s happy gait. Evan can’t help but hope that it’s because Evan doesn’t like Zoe anymore, and maybe Connor likes him back. But that’s insane, who would like the wallflower anyway?
Evan spends the rest of the class wondering what Connor’s hair would feel like with Evan’s fingers combing through it.
The week leading up to winter break, Evan can’t stop thinking about what he should get Connor for Christmas. Sure, Evan is Jewish and celebrates Hanukkah, he knows that Connor celebrates Christmas. He only knows this because he overheard Zoe asking Alana to come over on Christmas Eve, as Zoe’s parents apparently want to meet her.
Evan wasn’t sure on what to get Connor until he was at the store with Jared because apparently he needed knew flannel and his mom thought he was ditching Evan. Which, he usually does, but Mrs. Kleinman doesn’t need to know that. Evan had seen a couple black hoodies and remembered that Connor’s were all worn out and faded. Then as he was walking up to the cash register, money already in hand, he saw a bowl full of nail polish and quickly plucked out a black bottle. Connor usually as his nails painted, sure they were almost always chipped, but they were also always black. Black seemed to be his signature color.
Wednesday night, Evan wrapped the gift for Connor, taping his note to the present.
Connor Murphy didn’t go to bed until one am that night. Usually, he’s asleep by 12 on Mondays and Wednesdays, but this time he stayed up. He needed to get it perfect. Sure there was a chance that Mystery Writer didn’t celebrate Christmas, but that’s why Connor is signing the card Happy Holidays instead. It doesn’t need to be a Christmas gift. Just a thank you gift.
Thursday morning, when Evan went to put the gift outside Connor’s locker, he was surprised to see it propped open, and not shut like normal. Curiosity was digging at him, so Evan carefully opened the locker and was even more shocked to see a small wrapped item on the bottom of Connor’s locker. He picked it up, and then he noticed the card, which was addressed to him. Well not him exactly, but it did say To: My Mystery Writer and who else would Connor be calling a mystery writer?
Evan felt a small smile grow on his face as he placed the gift he got Connor on the bottom of his locker, and quickly put the one Connor got him in his bag. He then swiftly shut the locker and made his way to his first class.
After third period, when Connor got to his locker, he was glad to see that Mystery Writer took the gift, he was also happy to find out that he was left a gift as well.
Throughout math class, Evan couldn’t focus. He just stared at Connor’s head. Which probably wasn’t a good idea in hindsight as Finals is the week he gets back from spring break, and he really should be paying attention the review they’re doing. But at that moment, he really didn’t care.
The first thing Evan does when he gets home is putting the gift Connor got him under the small house plant he has on his desk. Even though he doesn’t do Christmas, maybe this one time he can pretend.
When his mom gets home and sees the gift on his desk, she asks where it came from.
“O-oh, well um. There’s this b-boy, C-connor Murphy, and earlier this year he wa-was in the hos-hospital? So, um, I decided to, uh, write him letters. I-I wanted to ma-make him feel good. So, uh, I gu-guess he got me-me a gift?”
“Oh honey, that’s so kind of you! I’m so glad you have another friend!”
Heidi was so excited to see the excitement in her son’s eyes as he talked about Connor.
Evan didn’t have the heart to tell his mom that Connor didn’t know it was him writing the letters, which is how he ended up baking cookies with his mom the day after Hanukkah ended. As soon as they were done, Heidi had already left for work, and Evan was tasked with the job of bringing them over to the Murphy’s place.
Before he left, he found a pen and a piece of paper to quickly scrawl out a note.
Cynthia is a bit confused as to who would be ringing her doorbell at nine at night. She is even more confused when no one is at the door, and she looks down to see a plate of cookies with a note taped to it. She leans down to pick up the plate, walks back inside and shuts the door. When she gets to her kitchen, she plucks the note from the plate and reads it.
Dear Connor Murphy
Have an excellent Christmas
Sincerely Me.
Cynthia can’t help but grin at the fact that Connor has a friend. She can’t remember the last time Connor even talked about a friend. Cynthia places the note back onto the plate, then proceeds to pick the plate up and carry it upstairs to her son’s room.
She knocks twice on the door, and the music that was blaring from inside is turned off. She hears heavy footsteps and then the door opens, revealing her son who seems to not have gotten dressed today. Instead, he is in sweats, a tank top, and has an apron covered in paint over his pajamas.
Cynthia doesn’t fail to notice the hard glare on her son’s face, and so she just holds up the plate.
Connor glances at it, and noticing the note, he picks it up and reads it.
Cynthia also doesn’t fail to notice the small smile and slight blush that Connor suddenly now has, as he takes the plate of cookies and ducks back into his room.
Cynthia can already tell that whoever this new friend is, is a good fit for her boy.
Christmas morning comes, and Evan figures that now is a good time to open Connor’s present. He brings the gift over to his bed. He tears open the wrapping paper and finds a book with a note covering the title.
Dear Mystery Writer
You always talk, or write, about how you love trees, so, here.
Evan flips the paper over and sees a beautifully drown Oak tree on the back. Evan knew Connor drew, as that’s what he does for most of math, but he never knew he could draw so, realistically. Before even glancing at what the title says, Evan gets up to pin the tree to his headboard, smiling proudly at it, before looking at the book.
Evan laughs when he sees it’s the Encyclopedia of Trees.
Connor also sits on his bed as he opens Mystery Writer’s gift. First, he looks at the note that was taped to the gift.
Dear Connor Murphy,
Your sweatshirts seem to have a lot of holes, I didn’t know if it was for comfort or what but I got you a new one. Oh, and I really like your nails so here’s some more polish.
Sincerely me’
Connor can feel the blush already beginning on his cheeks.
He unwraps the gift and instantly notices how soft the two hoodies are. He also decides that he will be using the new nail polish until it ran out. He can also feel his blush deepen and nearly scolds himself for feeling and acting this way. He shouldn’t start to like someone he doesn’t know the name of. He really shouldn’t. But then again, when has he ever done something he should do?
A week after school is back in session, the Kleinmans come over to the Hansen’s place for dinner. When Jared enters Evan’s room, he instantly notices the tree that’s still pinned up, and as Evan was gathering snacks downstairs, it felt only reasonable for Jared to see if he could see who drew it. It certainly wasn’t Evan, as his art skills were no better than Jared, who could only draw cartoon cats and nothing else.
When Jared is close enough to read the signature, he would have spat out his drink, if he was drinking something. Why would Conor Murphy draw Evan Hansen a tree?
When Evan walks back into his room, Jared plays innocent and asks his family friend who drew the tree.
When Evan blushes and says that it’s from Connor Murphy, Jared demands that Evan tells him why Connor drew him a tree.
After Evan is done explaining the letters, Jared can’t stop laughing.
“So first, you write sex letters about his sister, and now you’re writing sex letters about and for him?”
“No! Th-they’re not se-sex letter Jared! An-and I only wro-wrote about him on-once!” Which, was the wrong thing for Evan to say as it throws Jared into another fit of hysterics.
For the next month at school, Jared starts to act differently when he’s around Connor, and Connor severely hopes that Jared isn’t the letter guy as that would mean Connor has a crush on Jared, and he really hopes that isn’t the case.
However, for a slight second Connor is relieved when Jared tells him who the writer is.
Connor was casually reading one of the letters when Jared pops up and says “I see you have another love note from Evan tree boy Hansen.”
At that Connor watches as Jared's eyes widen and he quickly leaves. It takes a second for the brand new information to kick in, but then Connor realizes that the cute dorky kid that sits behind him in math. The kid he’s always had a small crush on. The kid he silently hoped was the mystery writer, is actually the mystery writer, and Connor doesn’t remember the last time he was this happy.
Evan was just about to walk out of school when he suddenly heard someone calling his name. He turned to see Connor Murphy running to catch up with him.
“Evan, can we talk? Now?”
Evan isn’t sure why Connor wants to talk to him, but being who he is, he gives a simple nod and lets Connor lead him to the tree that he usually sits under during lunch.
“So, uh, Jared told me you were the one writing letters to me. Is, uh, is that true?” Connor seems nervous and a little hopeful. Evan isn’t sure why.
“H-he told yo-you?”
Connor nods.
“OhgodI’msosorryIprobablywasn’tthepersonyouwantedtpbewritingyouletters. Sorry.”
“Uh, could you repeat that.”
Evan takes in a large breath of air before repeating his previous statement. “Oh god, I’m so sorry, I probably wasn’t the person you wanted to be writing you letters. Sorry.” Evan’s nervous that Connor hates him now, and really doesn’t want that. He wants to be friends with him, especially since that’s the closest he can probably get to Connor liking him back.
“No! I’m glad it’s you. You’re probably the nicest kid in school, anyone else I would think was making fun of me. I just wanted to say thanks. So, uh, thanks.” And with that, Connor dashes away from Evan.
The next day at school, Evan is surprised to see a note flutter to the ground after opening his locker. He bent down to pick it up and is happy to find that the letter is from Connor.
From that day onwards, Evan and Connor correspond with letters for each other. They both want to talk outside these letters, be friends in real life as well.
In February Connor finally lets himself fall completely in love with the blond haired boy. However, he doesn’t tell anyone, especially Evan. Either way, Evan likes someone else. Sure, they have some of the same features, but there are plenty of kids at their school with brown hair. And the way Evan describes his crush? Definitely not him. One letter Connor received was all about this crush. Apparently, he has beautiful brown hair, gorgeous blue eyes with a small bit of brown in the left, and a face that was crafted by God himself.
Sure, Connor has brown hair, but so does half the student body. And yes, Connor has a bit of brown in his left eye, but so does Jared Kleinman and this other kid in his AP lit class. And Connor’s face was most definitely not crafted by God. No way in hell.
So yeah, Connor accepted that he likes Evan. Like, a lot. But he’s also accepted that Evan will never like him back. And that’s okay. Or so Connor tells himself.
It isn’t until mid-March that Evan asks Connor if he wants to go grab ice cream on Friday after school.
Connor replies back with a no shit and his phone number.
After school, Connor drove Evan to A la mode, his favorite ice cream place, and they hung out at Evan’s house until Connor left at eleven at night, running into Heidi Hansen, who was thrilled to finally meet the boy her son speaks so highly of. She then asked Connor for his mom’s number so she could talk to her.
Both moms were ecstatic to hear about their sons hanging out.
They were also happy to talk to each other about them.
Both boys had a blush on their faces for an hour afterward.
And both of them fell asleep with the other on their minds, once again.
For the last two and a half months of school, Connor and Evan are practically attached at the hip. Evan was at Connor’s house for Easter since Evan doesn’t celebrate it and his mom was working. Then, they skip prom and just hang out at Connor’s house watching 80’s movies. They fell asleep on the couch, Evan’s head on Connor’s shoulder, and Connor’s head on Evan’s head.
At the end of senior year, Evan informs Connor that he didn’t apply to any schools so that he could take a gap year and save up for school for a while longer. Connor decides then and there to just not go to college until Evan goes. Connor doesn’t want to be alone, he’s not good at making friends, and to get through life he just really needs one. He got lucky with Evan. He doesn’t think he will get as lucky again.
Evan gets a job at the Pottery Barn, and Connor works at the Michael's next door. They always share their lunch breaks together, and they carpool to work as Evan doesn’t like to drive, and Connor does. Plus it means more time being together, and neither of them will pass up that opportunity.
That winter, Connor, and Evan were at Evan’s house. Heidi was at work, taking on the night shift and wouldn’t be home until early the next morning. The boys took advantage of that situation and broke out a bottle of bourbon to share as they watched Lord of the Rings.
By the time they were on the second movie, both of them had a pretty good buzz going on.
And both boys were a little Childish when drunk.
“Hey, hey Evan.” Connor whispers, giggling.
“What?” After there’s a slight pause, Evan asks again, “Co-connor, what?”
“Oh! Oh right! I wanted to tell you something.” Connor isn’t giggling anymore, but he still has a large smile adorning his face.
“And?”
“It’s very important. I’ve know for a while now. I wanted to tell you sooner, but I was nervous. Haha, I’m kind of nervous now, but like, less than usual. You know?”
“Co-con, just to-tell me. Please?”
“Oh right! I haven’t said it yet! Well, I like you!”
“I know th-that Con! That’s why we-we’re best fri-friends!”
“No! I mean I love you! Like, I want to date you and kiss you! All the time. But I don’t cause I don’t think you’d like that.”
“Well, th-that’s not true Co-con! I want to kiss you all the time too!”
“Really?” Connor’s very surprised, but also extremely happy.
“Ye-yeah!”
“Then, can I kiss you?”
Evan answers with a swift nod and Connor grabs Evan’s shirt collar and pulls him in for a sweet kiss, that’s long overdue.
When they pull back, neither of the boys have their eyes opened all the way. They’re both smiling, and they’re both still gripping onto each other.
Evan goes in for another kiss, and they fall back onto the couch, kissing lazily until they fall asleep, Evan on top of Connor, arms, and legs tangled, smiles still on their faces.
When Heidi comes home, she promptly ignores the bottle of whiskey on the coffee table. Instead, she grabs a blanket from the basket by the TV and spreads it over her son and his new boyfriend. She smiles as she takes out her phone to send a picture to Cynthia, telling her that she expects the twenty bucks the next time they go out for coffee together.
She also decides that she’ll talk to the boys about the bottle after she congratulates them.

"Hi Jimmy,
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your prayer service. I truly think it is the only thing keeping me from losing my shit :)
I see so many possible places in my life where things could turn dramatic and chaotic (as I have witnessed with many close to me), and since I've been on your prayer list, everything seems to sort of stay on an even keel. The most I struggle with is some depressive issues.
I used some of your verbiage in my prayer list this time, because it seemed most appropriate and fit so well--I hope this was okay. I've been revisiting some of your MyBeliefWorks mp3s as well, and they give me an added boost and renewed focus.
I am seeing the positive effects of this new prayer list in action already, it just blows me away!!  Thank you again, for all you do. I hope you had a fantastic birthday." - Nichole

From the Fish Box
"Hi Jimmy,
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate your prayer service.

Scorpio Races Festival: Challenge #5
@thescorpioracesfestival
That night I walk to Grattons. It takes me a half an hour but I don’t want to ask Holly to use his truck again. I wade through thick throngs of people to get to the front door. The shop is overflowing with tourists clamoring about the final mounts of all who are brave enough to officially take on the races. I see Adelaide behind the counter once I push my way to the front. She is sitting on a stool behind the register, her bored posture making it clear that nobody in here is in the market for fine meats at the moment, they all just want to stare at the board.
“Hey,” I say by way of greeting. She looks up from the book in her hand and waves a hello.
“I didn’t think you would come back”, she says, “you bolted out of here pretty quick before. Thought maybe Randy scared you off.”
I laugh and assume Randy was the man who walked in before I had ungracefully left earlier without saying goodbye. “No, I just had to attend to an urgent matter.” My eyes are drawn once again to the chalkboard above our heads. “Speaking of which, I need you to add my name to the riders list.”
She looks at me for a long moment without saying anything before pulling a stubby piece of chalk out from her apron and standing on the stool below the cash register.
“Charlene Murphy right?” she asks.
I nod and stare at the clock on the counter as it ticks the silent seconds away. Its tarnished face reads 8:59. Each tick is a lifetime. I can’t bring myself to watch as she scribbles my name into one of the newly erased spots left behind by someone who decided they had better things to do than die on the beach.
“And who are you riding?” she asks. It takes me a moment to get the name out. My plan had been to walk in confidently and state that I would be riding the unrideable monster. But now that all of the patrons of the shop have gone quiet, the words I had rehearsed on the long walk here seem to fizzle out pathetically on my tongue.
“Russa.” I try to say it with as little emphasis as possible, hoping to slide under the radar and become just another face in the crowd. It doesn’t work. Behind me, the crowd surges to life, interested in a new piece of gossip that they can gnaw on.
Adelaide steps down from the stool and collects my registration fee.
I try not to make eye contact as I hand over the few bills left from my trip over. The clock on the counter tells me that it is one minute past nine o’clock, even though it feels like I have been standing in front of this counter for so long that my feet are a part of the bloodstained tile.
Adelaide looks at the clock before looking at me again.  “I’m off now, and my offer to take you to the festival stills stands if you want.”
I smile at her and nod. For some reason, it feels like she has become an anchor in my crazy whirlwind of a day. When we get outside I can hear a drum line pounding out a beat that thrums down the road and into my pulse. There are people swarming up and down the streets and it smells sweet and sickly, like warm butter and fresh meat. Vendor stalls are set up all down the streets and hagglers yell and whistle and shake rods with iron bells in my face.
There is a wild energy in Skarmouth tonight. One that I have never felt before. All I know is that I have never felt more alive. The full moon casts strange shadows on Adelaide’s face and illuminates her freckles. We wander the town for a couple hours. The scarcely illuminated streets are a wild writhing thing tonight and the energy screams through my veins. We talk the whole time. Something about the darkness of the night and and Adelaide’s easy smile has me telling her things that I’ve been burying in my mind since I got here. I tell her about my parents split when I was a kid. How we sold our acreage and our herd and moved into the city. I tell her about my mom racing since before I could remember and always knowing that it was what I was going to do with my life. I tell her about the fire at the track that killed my mother and the closed casket funeral where I didn’t cry because it didn’t feel like she was really gone. I spill out all the details of my fruitless search to find a new job away from horses, while my bank account dwindled. Turns out I didn’t really have any skills other than horse whispering. I tell her about how Holly’s job listing was online one morning and I applied as soon as I saw that it would take me to the middle of nowhere. I don’t realize that I’m crying until I feel calloused fingers brushing away stray tears. I whisper to her that for the longest time I have felt that I don’t belong anywhere, that I am destined to drift. We stay silent, standing close together on the fringes of a crowd of girls dancing with bells tied along their wrists. Adelaide grabs my hand and pulls me towards a vendor. She hands over a few coins in exchange for two braided red ribbons with bells and seashell beads dangling musically from its length. She grabs my wrist and ties one of the bracelets around my wrist and I do the same to her.
“Now you belong to Thisby,” she whispers to me.
She weaves her hand into mine without looking at me and we continue down the street together. Her hand is an anchor, and for the first time in a very long time, I am no longer drifting.
Later that night, I stand on a rock overlooking the turbulent sea, and my blood joins those of the thousands of men and women who also belonged to Thisby the way that I do now. I say mine and Russa’s name without a single stutter, the way I wanted to say it back in Grattons. I think that it is the weight of the bells around my wrist and the weight of Adelaide’s stare that makes it come out easier.

☆I’m The Light Blinking At The End Of The Road☆ [Evan x Reader - Soulmate AU]
[I told myself I wouldn’t let 75% of the posts on this blog be about Evan but I’m w e a k ~Mod V]
TW: none, except a little light swearing and a little of Evan’s anxiety.
Everyone knows about the words. The ones that show up on your body as a child—inky black and scrawled in unfamiliar handwriting, impossible to scrub off. It’s common knowledge that the words will be the first ones your soulmate ever says to you.
However, not everyone acknowledges them. Some people go their entire lives without being entirely sure whether or not the person they love is their soulmate, with only simple “Hi”s and “Hello”s on their bodies. Some couples tattoo their own words, foregoing the system. Who’s the universe to say who you’re destined to be with? The universe doesn’t give a shit about any other aspect of your everyday life; why should it care about your “soulmate”?
That was a lot of people believed, anyway. Evan was one of the “lucky” ones—one of those people that got phrases so specific, it would be impossible to meet his soulmate and not know it. However, it was kind of inconvenient. He spent years wearing sweaters and long-sleeved shirts to cover up the phrase inked on his right wrist: “Are you fucking kidding me?” People gawking at his soul mark coupled with his crippling social anxiety made for a very uncomfortable cocktail of emotions.
He had tried scrubbing it off with soap and water as a kid, even considered getting it inked out with a black tattoo. But the soul marks were impossible to scrub off and he was scared of needles, so he stuck with just keeping it covered. Even with the reminder ever-present, Evan didn’t really believe in the whole “soulmates” thing. After all, his parents had been so-called soulmates, and look where that landed them. Plus, a little voice in the back of his head that sounded suspiciously like his own whispered that there was no way anyone in the universe would be meant for someone like him.
Well, that was until a quarter through his senior year.
The trees in town were turning gorgeous oranges and yellows, painting Evan’s sleepy hometown in a warm glow. He adjusted his bag on his shoulder as he waited for Jared to pick him up. The familiar maroon, junky-looking car pulled into his driveway, and Evan opened the passenger side and half-sat, half-fell into the seat.
“Evan, bro, did you finish last night’s chem homework?” Jared asked immediately. Evan had half a mind to say an indignant, “Well good morning to you too,”, but then he started thinking about whether Jared would understand what he was saying and not get the sarcasm, something he didn’t really handle well, oh god what if Jared just thought he was an idiot? He’d stop giving him rides to school and his mom would have to drive him, making her late and then she’d lose her job and he’d have to make ends meet by working at a shady bar and—
“Dude, you okay? You thinking about your weird sex dreams about one of the Murphys again?” Jared cackled. Evan turned bright red.
“OhmygodJaredshutup!”
The rest of the ride to school was uneventful, Jared talking more about his weekend (“Yeah, I crashed a college kegger. It wasn’t cool enough for the infamously awesome Jared Kleinman, so I left after an hour. No big deal.”) while Evan just stared out at the world rushing by. He tried not to look at the tops of trees anymore, and not for too long, unless the sick feeling in the pit of his stomach returned, thinking about last summer.
“Okay, but seriously, I need to borrow your chem homework, or I’m doomed,” Jared said pulling in to his parking spot. Evan nodded—at least he didn’t have to pay gas money—and dug through his backpack.
“Uhhhh….h-here it is,” Evan said, kind of shoving it in Jared’s direction. Jared smiled wide.
“Thanks man! I’ll give it back by lunch.”
“Jared, don’t you get A’s in everything? W-Why can’t you just, I dunno…do the work, yourself, maybe?” Evan suggested, getting out of Jared’s car. He just laughed, pushing his glasses up on his nose.
“Wow, look at Hansen over here, a straight-up genius,” Jared said sarcastically. Evan looked down at the ground, focusing on a pile of leaves near the sidewalk. “Yeah, like I would do that. I’ve got way cooler things to do with my friends. My other friends.” Jared tugged on his shirt collar in something that Evan would recognize as awkwardness if everything Jared did wasn’t awkward on its own account.
“O-Okay. Um, see you at lunch?” It was more of a question than a statement, and Evan swore at himself in his head as he walked away. God, why did he always let Jared walk all over him? Because he’s your only friend,” that voice in his head said.
“N-Not true! I have—I have friends,” Evan thought defensively.
“Yeah, and that’s why you’re standing in the middle of the parking lot talking to yourself.”
Goddammit. He was doing this again.
Evan messed with the hem of his shirt, rolling it up and smoothing it out again, wringing it with his fingers. He tried very hard to just focus on his blue converse: stepping on a square floor tile, flecked with brown and gold spots, the way his shoe crinkled up when he stepped—
CRASH!
Evan yelped as he knocked into you full-force, knocking you over and onto the ground. His hands shot out to catch himself, and he did—with his arms pinned right beside your’s face. Wide eyes stared up at him, and he felt his face and neck flush a bright, embarrassed red from the position he was in, effectively landing right on topof you.
Evan opened and closed his mouth, making him look kind of like a fish. “I-I-I’m so sorry, I must have—must have tripped, and um, oh my god this is embarrassing I am so so sorry—“
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
Evan’s eyes went wide, and he practically jumped off of you. There was a crowd of people forming around them now, watching the scene in the hallway. Evan felt his cheeks and the tips of his ears burning, felt the sting of tears threatening to spill. His throat felt tight and his hands were starting to shake, fingers fumbling where he was messing with his shirt hem. You shot up, glancing worriedly at the gathering crowd and grabbing your things, cursing under your breath. When you saw Evan, however, your eyes got wide again, and you grabbed Evan’s hand, both gentle and insisting.
“Come on, let’s go,” you murmured, squeezing his hand encouragingly and pointedly not looking at the other people surrounding you, and Evan nodded, getting to his feet and walking quickly away. He didn’t even notice you were holding his hand, until he thought about how warm your hand was—and oh god, were his warm too? Were they getting sweaty like they did the night he had waited for Zoe, but only got sweaty because he was thinking about them getting sweaty and now they were because he was thinking so much—
“Okay, I think we’re good,” you said, relieved, effectively stopping Evan’s runaway train of thought. You had a habit of doing that, Evan thought absently. He didn’t stop to ponder if that was a good thing or a bad thing. You had pulled him into a little alcove in a pretty deserted part of the school. Evan’s free fingers still played nervously with his hem.
“Listen, I’m—I’m sorry, about, um, whatever that w-was, and if you took me aside to say you never want to talk to me again I mean I guess that’s fine?” Evan rambled out, not thinking before he spoke.
You gave him a look of complete confusion. “Why would I not want to talk to you?” you asked. “I mean, I think this gives me more than enough reason to want to talk to you.” You made a move to take off your jacket, pulling down your t-shirt sleeve so this boy who had tripped into you could read the black words inked onto your collarbone in his messy handwriting: “I-I-I’m so sorry, I must have—must have tripped, and um, oh my god this is embarrassing I am so so sorry”.
Evan’s jaw hit the floor. This could notbe happening. He fumbled with his shirt sleeve, pulling it up to show your vulgar first words to him. “Wow, I-I can’t believe they…they even got my, um my stutter right??” Evan said, gesturing to your soul marks.
You stared at him blankly for second before laughing. Full-on cackling, bent-over-at-the-middle laughing. You even snorted a little bit, slapping a hand over your mouth. Evan suppressed a giggle; that was kind of…cute?
“This is insane,” you said, still kind of laughing. “The first thing I get when I move here is my soulmate just, showing up out of the blue? What the hell?” And then you were laughing, and Evan was smiling shyly, and then laughing along with you. Two laughing weirdos in an alcove in a high school hallway.
“I’m—I’m (Y/N),” you finally said, holding out your hand.
“E-Evan. Hansen.” He tentatively took it in his own, not objecting a bit when you threaded your fingers through his.
“Well, hello, Evan,” you said, sweetly looking into his eyes. “I’m just loving this incredibly awkward first meeting we’re having, but I don’t want to be late on my first day of classes. Maybe we could meet up later…?” you asked hesitantly. Evan felt his cheeks grow pink again.
“Oh, um, yeah! Yeah, of course. I mean, what kind of guy would say no, to his soulmate, right? God. Soulmate. Um. Wow.” Evan’s still confused and bewildered rambling made you laugh.
“Yeah. Wow.” You squeezed his hand, and he squeezed back. “I guess I’ll see you later, Evan Hansen.” You smiled at him one last time and squeezed his hand, letting your hand fall from his grasp. You could barely contain your excitement as you walked down the hallway, shoulders hunched and smile wide.
Evan watched you go, out of breath suddenly. He couldn’t believe the universe gave him such good luck—you were so pretty, and caring, and funny, and god you were just so cute, this was impossible. There was no way you were real.
Then, he glanced back down at the words on his wrist, the objectively vulgar words taking on completely new meaning. Instead of feeling like the surrounding chilly fall air, he felt like early spring, in bloom and bursting at the seams.

Lucy’s Substitute Secretary
S5;E14 ~ January 2, 1967
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
While Lucy takes a scheduled vacation, she is replaced by a temporary secretary (Ruta Lee) that may threaten her job security.  Instead of going away, Lucy keeps an eye on her wearing some outrageous disguises.
Tumblr media
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney), Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane Lewis)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Ruta Lee (Miss Audrey Fields) was born Ruta Mary Kilmonis in Montreal, Quebec. Her first big film was as one of the brides in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in 1954. She started on TV in 1950 and has continually made guest appearances on dozens of series. She will play herself in “Lucy Meets the Berles” (S6;E1) as well as the TV film “Lucy Moves to NBC” in 1980.  As of this writing, Lee is still acting in films.
Miss Fields was formerly private secretary to the president of the North Atlantic Trust Company.
Tumblr media
Barbara Morrison (Mrs. Winkler) was an English-born actress making the second of her two appearances on “The Lucy Show.” She also plays an irate shopper in “Lucy’s Working Daughter,” a 1968 episode of “Here’s Lucy,” in addition to two other episodes.
Mrs. Winkler is a widow from Pasadena. She has a lot of cherries in her hat.
Tumblr media
Roy Roberts (Mr. Cheever) was born Roy Barnes Jones in Tampa, Florida in 1906. His early career was on the Broadway stage, gracing such plays as Old Man Murphy (1931), Twentieth Century (1932), The Body Beautiful (1935) and My Sister Eileen (1942). In Hollywood, the veteran character actor clocked over 900 screen performances in his 40 year career, most of which were authority figures. He and Lucille Ball appeared together in Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949).  On “The Lucy Show” he first appeared as a Navy Admiral in “Lucy and the Submarine” (S5;E2). As of this episode he becomes a recurring character on the show doing 14 episodes through the end of the series. He was seen as various characters in 5 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” In addition, he was a regular on “McHale’s Navy” (Admiral Rogers), “The Beverly Hillbillies” (John Cushing), “Bewitched” (Frank Stephens), “Petticoat Junction” (Norman Curtis), and “Gunsmoke” (Harry Bodkin). Roberts died in 1975 at age 69.
Tumblr media
This is the first new episode of calendar year 1967.  It was filmed on November 10, 1966.
Tumblr media
Before it was available on DVD, this episode was screened using a 16mm print for Lucy's 2008 Birthday Celebration in Jamestown as part of “An Evening with Ruta Lee.” Lee talked about her work with Ball and shared anecdotes about the episode.
Lee first met Lucille Ball at Del Mar Racetrack. They bonded over their love of polka dots! In 1974, Lee presented Ball with the Thalians Philanthropy Award for her support of mental health awareness, the first female every to receive the recognition.
Tumblr media
Lucy is scheduled to vacation in Lake Arrowhead, a resort community in the San Bernadino Mountains of Southern California. In 1959, Lake Arrowhead stood in for the 49th state during second unit and location shooting of “Lucy Goes to Alaska,” an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” guest starring Red Skelton.
When prospective depositor Mrs. Winkler announces that she “must get back to Pasadena” the laugh track adds a small reaction, perhaps to indicate that Mrs. Winkler is supposed to be the classic “little old lady from Pasadena.”  As she is leaving she says she is tired of boy scouts trying to take her across the street!
Tumblr media
Lucy says Audrey Fields is a “one woman Peyton Place.”  Based on a 1956 novel,“Peyton Place” was a primetime soap opera that aired on ABC from 1964 to 1969. The title has become synonymous with the romantic problems and scandals of small-town life. It was previously mentioned in “Lucy and Joan” (S4;E4).
Tumblr media
Mary Jane has borrowed a wig from the studio for Lucy to be a brunette on her vacation.  She says it was worn by Audrey Hepburn “in the picture we saw.”
Tumblr media
Four months before the filming of this episode, Hepburn premiered the film How To Steal a Million directed by William Wyler.
Mr. Mooney dictates a letter to Mr. Cavanaugh about the Winkler account. He warns Miss Fields not to get them mixed up – unfortunately within earshot of jealous Lucy.
Tumblr media
When Lucy dresses up as Margot of Margot's Mad Mad Mod Interiors she uses a Connecticut lock-jaw accent and dresses in mod clothes reminiscent of her wardrobe during 1966′s “Lucy in London.”
Tumblr media
For a painting over Mr. Mooney's desk, “Margot” suggests a Salvador Dali: “That way, whenever anyone comes through the door they can say.... [finish the joke yourself].”  Salvador Dali (1904-89) was best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. The joke puns on the Broadway musical (still playing at the time) Hello, Dolly! Lucy sang from the show and dressed as the title character in “Lucy and the Undercover Agent” (S4;E10).
Tumblr media
To shampoo the rugs in Mr. Mooney's office, Lucy dresses up as Jose Hernandez from Jose's Rug Cleaners. “Jose” says he cannot come back at night because he has to see Esther (siesta). When Mr. Mooney asks him if he could go someplace else he replies “Si, Tijuana. But I no wanna.”
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo also donned a variety of disguises to keep an eye on a man (Ricky) in “Lucy is Jealous of Girl Singer” (ILL S1;E10).
Blooper Alerts!
Sitcom Logic Alert! Despite knowing Lucy Carmichael for many years, Mr. Mooney fails to recognize Lucy in her variety of disguises – an age-old comedy contrivance.
