summary:

The Bloodline is a notorious crime family known all across the underground world. A family that’s been at the top of the food chain for generations. Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris, France, to British parents, Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, both lawyers. She moved to Oxfordshire when she was five, where she attended the Dragon School. From the age of six, Emma knew that she wanted to be an actress and, for a number of years, she trained at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a part-time theatre school where she studied singing, dancing and acting. By the age of ten, she had performed and taken the lead in various Stagecoach productions and school plays.

In 1999, casting began for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001), the film adaptation of British author J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Casting agents found Emma through her Oxford theatre teacher. 2014, Emma was seen in Darren Aronofsky's Noah (2014), opposite Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Douglas Booth, Logan Lerman, and Anthony Hopkins. The film told the epic, biblical tale of Noah and the ark. Emma plays the role of Ila, a young woman who develops a close relationship with Noah's son, Shem (Booth). Noah made an outstanding $300m since its release in March. In 2015, Emma starred in Regression (2015), written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar. Also headlined by Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke, and set in Minnesota in 1990, Regression tells the story of Detective Bruce Kenner (Hawke), who investigates the case of young Angela, played by Emma, who accuses her father of sexual abuse.

Chapter 1: In Which Roy and Friends Discover They Have Made a Mistake

“How did you convince us to this again?” Heymans Breda asked.

The group of five boys stood outside of the laser tag place, ten minutes to go until the time that they had rented it out. Roy Mustang had talked them into it a while back, and they had all been working hard to find or save the money to be able to do it. The black-haired boy was rather proud of himself for it, and more than a little glad that it had all worked out.

He turned and grinned at Heymans. “A good idea doesn’t need convincing,” he said. “It speaks for itself.”

Heymans raised an eyebrow at him, obviously not entirely convinced by his words. “Let’s hope this idea of yours pans out,” he said with a snort.

“Um, I��m not entirely sure how well I’ll do at this,” Vato Falman said, shifting in place a little. “I mean, it sounds like fun,” he hurriedly said at the look Roy shot him, “I’m just not sure how good I’ll be at it. I’ve not done much with guns before, real or fake.”

“Don’t worry, Vato,” Jean Havoc said around the toothpick in his mouth, giving the other boy an easy grin. “Its pretty much aim, shoot and duck. It’ll be fun! And the one with the most points at the end of the day get treated to food by everyone else.”

Heymans raised his hand. “I think we should give Jean an automatic penalty,” Heymans said. “He hunts, so it gives him an unfair advantage.”

“Hey!” Jean said, pulling the toothpick from his mouth. “Let me have my fun! Do you know how many hours in my family’s store I had to work to save up for this? I still owe them about twenty more,” he grumbled.

“I’m sure we’ll all have fun,” Kain Fuery said, trying to defuse the situation. “I mean, we worked hard for this. We should enjoy it.”

“That’s right,” Roy said, his confident smile returning. “And we already paid the deposit. All we need now is for our last person to arrive.”

Four heads whipped towards him.

“Last person?” Jean asked.

“Who else did you invite?” Heyman’s asked, his eyes narrowing, “Is this why our price went down?”

Roy shifted a bit. “Well… yes,” he said. “But don’t worry! It’ll all be fine!”

“Who is it?” Vato asked.

“Hey—is that Riza Hawkeye?” Fuery asked.

They all turned to look. Sure enough, Riza was walking up the street towards them. She saw them looking at her and gave a small wave. Kain and Jean waved back, but they all turned to look at Roy.

“So. You invited Riza along,” Heymans said.

“Well, yes,” Roy said, trying and failing not to sound too defensive.

Jean was grinning. “I know you two are close, but are you getting closer?”

“I-It’s nothing like that!” Roy protested. “She—she just—she just needs more friends, that’s all! I’m just being friendly! I mean, I’m one of the few people she knows!”

“Aren’t her and Rebecca Catalina friends, though?” Vato asked.

“I think I’ve seen her hanging out with Maria Ross too,” Kain said. “Sheska says that Gracia sometimes joins them.”

“Come off it, Roy,” Heymans said with a grin. “You keep using that excuse—that you’re her only friend here, after she moved here two years ago, because you used to go learn some science crap from her father in the summers. But she’s got friends. You just like her.”

“Sh-shut up!” Roy snapped back. “You don’t know anything! I just—I—”

“I… hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

Roy whirled around. “R-Riza! No! I mean, ah, no, not at all. Just… a little disagreement,” he said.

Jean and Heymans exchanged looks as Roy fell into what Maes Hughes called his “charmer persona.” It worked on a lot of girls, for a time at least, and had gotten him out of trouble before.

Riza, though, just looked a bit amused at him. “Well, I hope it’s not anything that will interfere with the game. I brought my part,” she said, patting her purse. “I’ve never played laser tag before. It sounds fun.”

“I think you’ll enjoy it, Ri,” Jean said. “You shoot things with a laser gun in the dark.”

“It can be a bit more complicated than that,” Vato said. “In a proper game you have teams that are divided up and assigned a base. The object is to take down the other bases and score more points than the other teams.”

“Yeah, but most people just like to shoot the other players,” Jean said.

“Well, we’ll have it rented out for the afternoon. We can always play both ways,” Kain said.

“Or even an everyone-for-himself mode,” Heymans said. “There are lots of options.”

“Sounds fun,” Riza said with a smile. “Thanks for inviting me along.”

Roy’s chest puffed up a bit at that. “Of course! Let’s go on in! It’s about time!”

The group of six entered into the building. It only took a moment to finish working out the money and then for the workers to go over the rules of both the establishment and the laser tag game for them. One worker showed them how to put on the vests and use the laser guns, as well as what would happen when the vests were shot. When that was done, all that was left was to figure out how to play their first game.

“There are three colors,” the worker said. “Red, yellow, and green. There are six of you, so you could easily split up into groups of two and each group have one base, or you could split into groups of three and just use two of the colors. There’s also always a free-for-all style, or even where the groups aren’t evenly split. Really, it’s all up to you.”

He pointed to a map on the wall. “This tells you where the bases are in relation to where you’re going to enter the laser tag grounds. After each game, you can see who won or scored the best on the monitors outside. You guys have this for a few hours, so have fun and have at it! If you need help, just call for the game master!”

“Thank you,” Roy said to the worker. He turned back to the group. Alright. How do we want to play first?”

“Considering that we’ve never played here before, why don’t we go with two groups of three,” Heymans suggested. “We can split up randomly, choose our colors, and head out.”

“Why don’t we play this first game without the bases?” Jean said. “Just base it on hits. That way we can get a feel for the area first.”

“How are we going to split up randomly?” Vato asked.

“Oh! I can help with that,” Kain said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. “I know a site where we can enter our names in, and it’ll split us up.”

Roy nodded. “This sounds good to me.” He looked over at Riza. “Any objections?”

She shook her head. “No, not really. I’m good with taking the first round to learn.”

Roy nodded. “Alright, Kain, split us up.”

Kain nodded and entered their names into the site on his phone. In just a few seconds it had both split them up and assigned them colors. Roy, Heymans, and Jean were yellow. Kain, Vato and Riza were red.

Roy frowned a little at the results but nodded. “Alright. Let’s get these vests on, and head out.”

It wasn’t long before the two groups headed out, going through separate doors to enter the laser tag area. It was dark, with only black lights for illumination, as well as some areas with glow in the dark paint. A cold fog lay low to the ground. The walls were pieces of plywood painted mostly gray, sat into bases that locked them in place. Many of the walls had long rectangular areas cut out of them, often no wider than an inch or two, but usually as long as a foot. Some were horizontal, some were vertical, but both offered a look into the other side of the wall. The walls were maze like, making it easy to get turned around.

Riza’s eyes landed on what appeared to be a bridge, solid, and made of the same gray painted plywood, but sturdy enough to go up on.

“Let’s go up there,” she said quietly, nudging her two companions.

“Right.”

“Sure.”

They made their way to it, climbing up the bridge. It was sturdy, thankfully, and it had one covered area, maybe a foot and a half wide. From up there, it was easy to see down below into the maze of walls. The group of three fell silent, looking around. Movement caught Riza’s eye, and she saw Jean walking below. She waited, unsure if the protocol was to go ahead and shoot or not. However, neither Kain nor Vato seemed ready to shoot, and Jean was going to move out of range soon.

Riza quickly made a decision. She raised her laser gun up, settled it in her shoulder, aimed, and pressed the trigger. Jean’s vest went out, and she ducked, hearing his surprise. What she didn’t expect was the way that Vato and Kain stood there and looked down at her, as if trying to figure out what she was doing. Had she done something wrong? Was this not how the game was played?

Suddenly, Vato’s vest went out, and then both he and Kain ducked down, joining her. There were shouts from below, and Riza could hear Heymans and Roy approaching. She waited until she had a good idea of where they were, and then popped up, taking aim once again.

By the end of that round, fifteen minutes, Riza’s team had been, eventually, chased off the bridge, but the two teams had come out about even, with Roy’s just slightly ahead.

For the next game, they split up into twos, Roy and Vato, Havoc and Kain, and Riza and Breda. This time, they did have a base to guard. Riza quickly figured out that she could use the rectangular holes in the walls to shoot through from two or three walls away. Heymans guarded their base, while Riza prowled outside of it, keeping a close eye for any movement. They won that round, taking the least hits and their base not being invaded at all.

In the third game they split back into threes, but this time used the bases. Riza, Havoc, and Kain were teamed up on that one, leaving Roy, Vato and Heymans on the other. Kain’s job was to stay and guard the base. Havoc and Riza went after the other base. In the end, they came to a stalemate on the bases, although Riza and Havoc won for their team with the sheer number of hits they got on Roy and Heymans, who were attempting to go after their base.

In the fourth game, they split up the numbers unevenly, the goal not being the bases, but on taking out the other team. Roy and Riza ended up together on a team, while the others were to pursue them. They ended up on the bridge for a bit, until they were chased off of it, but Riza had found that she could very effectively shoot at people who were coming from there. In the end, they were chased around, but Roy and Riza did come out of it with more points than the others.

In the fifth game, Riza and Havoc got paired together, and by the end of it, everyone else agreed that wasn’t fair. Both of them were far too good at this, able to move quietly, hide well, and take shots that others didn’t see coming. They ended up back on the bridge, Havoc keeping an eye on either entrance, and Riza sniping people from the crest of it. It turned out that, even from the bridge, if she aimed right, she could hit someone who was two or three walls away by going through the cut-outs in them. Riza and Havoc took that game and left the others in the dust.

Game after game was played, with different scenarios, including at least three free-for-alls. Riza found that her favorite place to get was on that bridge where she could see people coming and hit them before they even knew where she was. It was effective, and only Havoc had come close to hitting her back.

“Okay, next to last game,” Roy said as Kain put their names into his phone again. “After this, one more free-for-all, and then we’re done. Remember, highest point winner of the day doesn’t pay for their food.”

They all agreed, and then gathered around Kain’s phone to see what it would spit out.

Two Groups. Green: Roy, Jean, Heymans, Vato, and Kain. Red: Riza

They all pulled back and looked at each other, the boys glancing among themselves before looking at Riza.

“I’m game,” she said. “It might be fun.”

“Are you sure?” Kain asked. “We can reset it. Five against one doesn’t seem fair.”

“It’s just a game,” Riza said. “It’ll be fine. If I lose, then I lose, no big deal.”

“You sure, Riza?” Roy asked.

Riza nodded. “Just so long as we head in separate door, like before.”

“Alright,” Roy said. “Suit up, I guess.”

They headed to get their respective vests, and Heymans pulled Roy in a bit. “You know if we let her get to the high ground, she’s going to have an edge on us,” he said.

“With her aim, she’s gonna have an edge on us no matter what,” Jean said. “She’s good.”

“Yeah,” Roy said, running a hand over his face. “I kinda forgot about it.”

“Forgot she’s got good aim?” Kain asked.

“Yeah, although I don’t know how I did,” Roy said.

“You were probably just excited to spend time with her,” Vato said, ignoring the irritated look Roy shot him.

“Okay, but how is she so good?” Heymans asked.

“She spent most of her life in the countryside,” Roy explained. “She hunted, fished, trapped, and did whatever else she needed to, even when she was young.”

“Why?” Jean questioned. “That seems like a lot.”

Roy shook his head, but it was clear that he was just unwilling to say too much more on the subject. “It got them food,” was all he said.

“Well, we’re gonna have to be careful with her,” Heymans said. “Even five against one, she’s gonna be tough to beat.”

“Right,” Roy said. He looked over at Riza and raised his voice. “You ready?”

“I am,” she called back.

The doors opened, and all of them flooded into the room.

“Alright, we need to get that bridge guarded,” Heymans said. “She’ll try to take it first. Kain, Vato, you take either end. Stay low and wait for her to come to you.” They nodded. “The rest of us should try and—”

He didn’t get to finish his sentence before his vest suddenly shut down, quickly followed by Vato’s.

Heymans cursed, and everyone dropped low.

“Where is she?” Roy asked.

Jean shook his head. “I’d guess from where she shot us, she was over that way,” he said, gesturing, “but I doubt that she’s there now.”

Heymans’ vest booted back up, and Vato’s was right behind it. “You two should still try to get to the bridge and guard it,” he said to Vato and Kain. “It’s still a good plan.”

“Alright,” Roy said. “You two do that. They rest of us will go hunt her down.”

They split, everyone going to do their job. Heymans, Roy, and Jean moved quietly, listening for any sign of her.

“Do you think we should—”

That was all that Jean got out before suddenly his vest went down, and Roy’s did as well. Heymans had ducked the moment he saw what happened to Jean, but his vest shut down as well.

“—that we should split up,” Jean said with a frown.

“Probably for the best,” Roy agreed. “If we’re grouped together, she can get us all easier. Maybe split up we can stand a better chance.”

The three boys split up, but they hadn’t gotten very far before suddenly Kain’s voice was cutting through the darkness. “Hey—how did you--?”

There was the sound of running feet, and then Vato gasped as well. “She’s got the high ground!” he yelled.

“And she keeps shooting my vest right when it’s about to come on!” Fuery said.

“Mine too!” Vato said

“Retreat!” Heymans called out. “We’ll have to figure something else out!”

Riza, in the meantime, grinned to herself as she stood on the bridge, ready to kneel down or move at a moment’s notice. She watched as Kain and Vato retreated and shot them both once more for good measure. She scanned the area, shooting whenever she saw the opportunity. They knew approximately where she was, of course, but they didn’t have the right angle, and there was room to move around on this bridge. They could never be entirely sure where she was.

In the end, she ended up mopping the floor with them, none of them even able to lay a shot on her, while she got them multiple times. The last free-for-all wasn’t much better, with Riza retaking her favorite spot, that bridge, and firing away on anything she saw move. By the time they finished all their games, Riza had not only gotten the highest score out of all of them, but she had gotten the highest score of all time at the establishment.

“Alright, you’ve got to teach me how you do it,” Jean said, slinging an arm around her shoulders as they all walked out. It was dark by now, and they were all pretty hungry.

Riza just shot him an amused grin. “It’s just practice, really.”

“That,” Roy said, pushing between the two a bit, “and she’s just always had really good aim.”

“That’s useful too,” Riza admitted.

“However, you did it, it was pretty amazing!” Kain said flipping around to walk backwards for a moment so he could see her as they walked. “I didn’t even see you most of the time, even when I knew where you were! And you were so quiet when you moved!”

“You have to be, to hunt,” she said.

“It’s still quite impressive,” Vato said. “Even more so as you seemed to learn all of the creakiest places quickly.”

“However, she did it, her food’s on us,” Heymans said. He looked over at her. “Just don’t order anything too expensive, alright?”

Riza could hear the teasing in his voice. “At the burger shack? I don’t think they know what expensive is.”

“I think she at least deserves some ice cream for breaking the all-time record,” Roy said, slipping his hand into hers and squeezing it.

“That does sound nice,” she admitted, squeezing his hand back.

“Alright! Burgers and ice cream all around!” Jean said. “Hey—Heymans! Bet I can beat you there!”

The small restaurant was in eyesight by now, and Heymans eyeballed it. “You’re on,” he said.

The two took off, and Vato and Kain hooped and hollered, cheering them on. Roy and Riza walked behind them, hand in hand, and quiet smiles on their faces.

“Thank you for inviting me,” Riza said, softly.

“Of course,” Roy said. “I wanted you to have some fun.”

“And you know I miss hunting and target practice,” she said.

“Maybe,” he said with a grin. He paused. “But you did have a good time?”

“The best I’ve had in ages,” Riza said.

“Good.” Roy said. “That’s all I wanted out of today.”

They caught up to the others, Jean and Heymans already arguing over who won the race, while Vato examined the menu he had memorized and Kain tried to play peacekeeper, satisfied with the day and with this moment. As the laughter and the voices rose up over the music that was playing, Riza knew that she’d never forget this day.

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Americans are used to the narrative that dangerous things – from “bad hombre” migrants to drugs – cross the border from the south.

But the truth is not so simple, says Josiah Heyman, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for Interamerican and Border Studies at the University of Texas at El Paso.

The fact is that hundreds of thousands of firearms are smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico every year and are traced to 70% of all weapons seizures following criminal activity.

"We have a mythology that this is the safe side of the border. We are safe day to day from violent crime, no question […] But there is widespread guns going south and that is something that we need to be aware of as a society and reject,” Heyman said.

American cooperation is something the Mexican government desperately wants as drug-related drug violence has reached record levels in the past two years.

Now, as the Biden administration settles into its first weeks at the White House, Mexican officials are pressing for action.

“The Mexican government is going to propose specific actions to U.S. authorities, including intrusive and non-intrusive inspections of vehicles at the border, as well as the use of technology to stop arms trafficking,” said Fabian Medina Hernandez, chief of the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.

Southbound checks by U.S. Customs and Border Protection are infrequent, habitual commuters tell Border Report.

Texas, epicenter of gunrunning into Mexico

According to Medina, 41% of all the illicit guns utilized to commit a crime in Mexico came from Texas. California comes in second place with 19% of the volume and Arizona in third with 15%.

The border crossings south of McAllen are the principal entryway for this deadly contraband, followed by Eagle Pass, El Paso and Brownsville.

That estimate comes from the volume of seizures effected during simultaneous surprise inspections on both sides of the border conducted between April 2020 and this month. Thousands of guns and ammo were seized during those checks, according to the Ministry.

“There are 9,000 sales points for guns along the U.S. border. I don’t know that they have as many McDonald’s restaurants as they have gun stores there,” Medina said on Thursday at an online arms trafficking forum.

Medina estimates that between 2.5 million and 3 million guns – from small arms to semiautomatic weapons preferred by the drug cartels – have come into his country from the United States in the past 10 years.

Heyman said guns often come into Mexico a few at a time.

“One notable characteristic is that it’s done in very small amounts, the so-called ‘ant’ smuggling,” he said, citing a Houston Chronicle investigation that tracked 27 guns from Houston to Coahuila, Mexico, from an individual who brought them to a cartel over a six-month period.

Heyman said the same pattern holds for guns purchased in El Paso, smuggled to Juarez and eventually taken to gangs deep in the state of Chihuahua.

Medina added that the Mexican government handed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau a list of 9,000 weapons of U.S. origin used in crimes in 2019.

Mexico and the United States have signed memorandums of understanding on security and weapons trafficking in the past, but this would be the first time the Biden administration tackles the thorny binational issue.

Gun control a ‘shared responsibility

Heyman said it’s time for the people of both countries to discuss gun violence.

“Not only do we have a shared problem, but also a shared responsibility and a shared opportunity,” he said

The number of women killed by gun violence is also on the rise in Juarez, which sits across the border from El Paso, in the past few years.

“We are probably not going to solve the entire issue of violence and illegal markets, but what we can do is make it less dangerous. This is a goal that should be shared by Mexico and the U.S. government and all people who want to live safe,” he said.

Both governments need to come up with strategies that include going after the cartels’ finances – the money that allows them to obtain U.S. guns, Heyman said.

Heyman called for tougher gun regulations in the United States, including eliminating the private gun sale option and more comprehensive checks and licensing.

Joseph Szabo’s Portraits of Teenagers in America in the 70s and 80s. 📷 In the early seventies, Joseph Szabo taught art and photography at Malverne High School on Long Island. Simultaneously, he continued his own photographic education, traveling to New York City to take a course on "how to photograph people and strangers" with Ken Heyman and to attend a lecture series called "The Concerned Photographer," curated by Cornell Capa, that featured the worlds's preeminent photographers. Inspired by the workshops, Szabo began photographing his students as a means of breaking down the barrier between pupil and instructor. Starting out in the classroom before branching out to the school grounds, Szabo soon gained the trust of his students, eventually photographing them at parties and on Jones Beach. Szabo revisited and mined his Teenage portfolio, resulting in two more books — Rolling Stones Fans and Jones Beach. His reputation as a chronicler of teenage life grew and Szabo reached a new audience, one that spanned from hipsters to celebrity "fans" like Bruce Weber who supported Szabo's work. Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper

A few months ago I covered the DVD set WWE released chronicling the ‘unseen’ matches of “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Today I continue that trend covering those lines of DVD collections with 2019’s Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper (trailer). Like with WWE’s other ‘unreleased’ line of home videos, all the matches and segments featured in here have never been released on video before. With WWE already releasing a comprehensive three-disc DVD set to Piper with 2006’s Born to Controversy, that means we are getting a collection full of deep cuts here. This two disc DVD is compiled similarly to the Randy Savage set where we get original, newly recorded interviews intersperse with the archival content. The interviews are from Piper mega-fan, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey which are mixed in with archived home video interviews with Piper for added context. There are six sets of Rousey interviews, and they are sporadically inserted throughout the collection which also features 19 matches, nine promos and 12 editions of Piper’s legendary interview show, Piper’s Pit. WWE has established that Rousey is essentially the endorsed successor to carry on the Piper legacy, with Ronda paying homage to “The Hot Rod” by rocking her version of Piper’s entrance attire and carrying on his nickname. With that in mind, having Ronda being the featured new set of interviews to draw from seems like a fitting choice to commemorate Piper’s career here and are nice ways to mix up this collection.

Ronda’s interviews are insightful on how she drew on Roddy for inspiration on MMA needing an antagonist, and how excited she was to finally meet him. I presumed she maintained a close relationship with Piper, and was surprised to learn in Rousey’s interviews here that she only met him once early in her MMA career when she got the blessing from Roddy to use his nickname and then a second time when she appeared on Pipers podcast, which was just a month shy of his death in July of 2015. Rousey went on to say one of her biggest regrets is not having a close relationship with him. There is a nice variety of the nine Piper interviews/promos included. There is a handful of the vintage Rock ‘n Wrestling era promos where Piper bellows out promos in front of a blue screen backdrop. A nice nostalgic bonus is a few vintage commercials where Piper maniacally shouts at you to purchase the latest WWE action figures. There are a few standout go-home PPV interviews here where Piper is on fire and by the end of them he got me just as fired up as Virgil for his upcoming WrestleMania match against Ted Dibiase, and on top of that is an especially intense promo with Bret Hart leading up to their WrestleMania VIII battle. There are three Roddy promos from his late 90’s WCW days, with a bewildering rant from a cell in Alcatrez and Hulk Hogan provoking Piper to cut loose on him and Bishoff in front of his son, Colt, standing out the most. These WCW promos have boisterous crowds capturing the high times WCW was riding at that time in the ‘Monday Night Wars.’

It is no surprise that Piper’s rougher, brawling style will not warrant many five star classics, but a fair amount of his 19 matches here have crowds eating up the chaos Piper is delivering. I have only seen a handful of Piper’s early NWA work before, so seeing a few more of his NWA matches unearthed for this set was a treat, and his match against Jay Youngblood is a smashmouth brawl that goes to a time limit draw, and I loved seeing Piper tag with Ole Anderson against Mike Davis and Buddy Landell. There are a lot of the big arena house show matches here that were previously televised only in local markets, and like a lot of those matches in other sets, usually feature good action until a hokey finish. That is the case here with a killer clash against Paul Orndorff in 1985 fresh into their rivalry, with the crowd going bokers for them until a double countout finish. Just as riveting is Piper’s match in this set against Rick Rude where the crowd is losing it throughout, but a lot of tomfoolery I will not even begin to explain transpires and is the catalyst for one of the strangest DQ finishes I have seen.

Piper teaming with Eddie and Blue-tista, looking like gold! Piper feuding with the nWo had the crowd on its feet! There are two matches on here against Mr. Perfect worth going out of your way to see. I know Mr. Fuji was an accomplished wrestler in the 70s, but never seen him in a match until this set where he is pummeled for a couple minutes against Piper until his fellow managers run in for the save. A lot of the latter matches in the back half of Getting Rowdy are quick TV matches with wonky finishes unfortunately, but for what it is worth, still draw rabid crowd reactions. There are two Nitro bouts included against Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage in 1998, but both bouts have several nWo run-ins that result in both matches being thrown out. I forgot about Piper’s brief 2003 run with Sean ‘O Haire, so it was nice to see those two again when Piper had a short encounter with Rikishi. The last match is an awesome impromptu bout against The Miz for $5000 of The Miz’s money, with Alex Reilly (remember him!?) as guest referee in 2011. I have zero recollection of this match, and even at a couple minutes long it was an absolute delight!

Getting Rowdy was jacked with 24 installments of Piper’s Pit, but WWE had quite a few more to draw upon from the vault with 12 more here. Some of the early ones in this collection that were a riot were where both Jimmy Hart and the Brooklyn Brawler ruthlessly provoke Roddy to giving them a a well-earned beatdown. There are a bunch in the second half of this set when Piper would periodically show up on RAW and SmackDown for a special Piper’s Pit. Two that really got me were one with John Cena where Piper does a tremendous job at needling Cena into living up to his then-current t-shirt slogan, ‘Rise Above Hate’ and another where Roddy moderates AJ Lee attempting to get back into Daniel Bryan’s good graces after costing him his WrestleMania match against Sheamus. I enjoyed this collection more than I anticipated. As I mentioned earlier, Piper was not known for his epic wrestling abilities, so I was not letdown from the wide range of match quality from the 19 matches in the set. There are a few matches that are hidden gems in here for what it is worth, but the real reason everyone should check out Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper, is for the many unreleased promos and Piper’s Pit interviews. While he may not have been a five star wrestler, Piper was easily a five star entertainer, and that is readily apparent from beginning to end in this collection.

Those Piper action figure commercials are iconic, and this set is full of iconic promos I have never seen before where the Hot Rod made Virgil look like a million bucks! Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) is a 2001 fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.[5] It is based on J. K. Rowling's 1997 novel of the same name. The film is the first instalment of the Harry Potter film series and was written by Steve Kloves and produced by David Heyman. Its story follows Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he discovers that he is a famous wizard and begins his education. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, with Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

Warner Bros. bought the film rights to the book in 1999 for a reported £1 million ($1.65 million in 1999). After the Dursleys escape to an island to avoid more letters, Hagrid re-appears and informs Harry that he is actually a wizard and has been accepted into Hogwarts against the Dursleys' wishes. After taking Harry to Diagon Alley to buy his supplies for Hogwarts and a pet owl named Hedwig as a birthday present, Hagrid informs him of his past: Harry's parents James and Lily Potter met their demise via a Killing Curse at the hands of the malevolent and all-powerful wizard: Lord Voldemort. Harry, the only survivor in the chaos, thus becomes well-known in the wizarding world as "The Boy Who Lived".

Harry is then taken to King's Cross station to board a train to Hogwarts, where he meets three other students: Ron Weasley, whom he quickly befriends; Hermione Granger, an intelligent witch born to Muggle parents; and Draco Malfoy, a boy from a wealthy wizarding family, with whom he immediately clashes. After arriving at school the students assemble in the Great Hall, where all the first-years are sorted by the Sorting Hat among four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Although the Sorting Hat considers putting Harry in Slytherin with Draco, he is placed into Gryffindor alongside Ron and Hermione.

At Hogwarts, Harry begins learning magic spells and discovers more about his past and parents. After recovering the Remembrall of Gryffindor student Neville Longbottom, Harry is recruited for Gryffindor's Quidditch team as a Seeker, an extremely rare feat for first-year students. On their way to the dorms one night the stair cases change paths leading Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the forbidden floor of Hogwarts. The three discover a giant three-headed dog named Fluffy in a restricted area of the school. Ron then insults Hermione after being embarrassed by her in a charms lesson, causing Hermione to lock herself in the girls' bathroom. She is attacked by a marauding troll, but Harry and Ron save her, befriending her in the process.

The children later find out Fluffy is guarding the Philosopher's Stone, an object that has the power to turn any metal into gold and produce a potion that grants immortality. Harry suspects that Potions teacher and head of Slytherin House Severus Snape is trying to obtain the stone in order to return Voldemort to physical form. Hagrid accidentally reveals to the trio that Fluffy will fall asleep if played music. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide that night to try and find the stone before Snape. They discover an already asleep Fluffy and face a series of safeguards including a deadly plant known as Devil's Snare, a room filled with aggressive flying keys that bruise Harry, and a dangerous life-sized game of chess that almost kills Ron.

After getting past the tasks, Harry discovers that it was Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Quirinus Quirrell who was trying to claim the stone: Snape had actually been protecting Harry all along. Quirrell removes his turban and reveals a weak Voldemort living on the back of his head. Through an enchantment placed by Dumbledore, Harry finds the stone in his possession. Voldemort attempts to bargain the stone from Harry in exchange for reviving his parents, but Harry refuses. Quirrell attempts to kill Harry in response; however, he is instead killed after Harry ends up burning his skin, reducing Quirrell to dust and causing Voldemort's soul to rise from his ashes. Harry is knocked unconscious in the process.

Harry recovers in the school hospital with Dumbledore at his side. Dumbledore explains that the stone has been destroyed and that Ron and Hermione are safe. Dumbledore also reveals how Harry was able to defeat Quirrell: When Harry's mother died to save him, her death gave Harry a love-based protection against Voldemort. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are rewarded with house points for their heroic performances, tying them for first place with Slytherin. Dumbledore then awards ten points to Neville for attempting to stop the trio, granting Gryffindor the House Cup. Harry returns home for the summer, happy to finally have a real home in Hogwarts.

Cast Further information: List of Harry Potter cast members Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, an 11-year-old orphan raised by his unwelcoming aunt and uncle, who learns of his own fame as a wizard known to have survived his parents' murder at the hands of the psychopathic dark wizard Lord Voldemort as an infant when he is accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Columbus had wanted Radcliffe for the role since he saw him in the BBC's production of David Copperfield, before the open casting sessions had taken place, but had been told by casting director Susan Figgis that Radcliffe's protective parents would not allow their son to take the part.[6] Columbus explained that his persistence in giving Radcliffe the role was responsible for Figgis' resignation.[6] Radcliffe was asked to audition in 2000, when Heyman and Kloves met him and his parents at a production of Stones in His Pockets in London.[7] Heyman and Columbus successfully managed to convince Radcliffe's parents that their son would be protected from media intrusion, and they agreed to let him play Harry.[6] Rowling approved of Radcliffe's casting, stating that "having seen [his] screen test I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry."[8] Radcliffe was reportedly paid £1 million for the film, although he felt the fee was "not that important".[9] William Moseley, who was later cast as Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia series, also auditioned for the role.[10] Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Harry's best friend at Hogwarts. A fan of the series, Grint decided he would be perfect for the part "because [he has] ginger hair".[9] Having seen a Newsround report about the open casting he sent in a video of himself rapping about how he wished to receive the part. Watson's Oxford theatre teacher passed her name on to the casting agents and she had to do over five interviews before she got the part.[11] Watson took her audition seriously, but "never really thought [she] had any chance of getting the role."[9] The producers were impressed by Watson's self-confidence and she outperformed the thousands of other girls who had applied.[12] John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost of Hogwarts' Gryffindor House. Robbie Coltrane as Rubeus Hagrid, a half-giant and Hogwarts' Groundskeeper. Coltrane was one of the two actors Rowling wanted most, along with Smith as McGonagall.[13][14] Coltrane, who was already a fan of the books, prepared for the role by discussing Hagrid's past and future with Rowling.[6][15] According to Figgis, Robin Williams was interested in participating in the film, but was turned down for the Hagrid role because of the "strictly British and Irish only" rule which Columbus was determined to maintain.[13][16] Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, the Charms Master and head of Hogwarts' Ravenclaw House. Davis also plays two other roles in the film: the Goblin Head Teller at Gringotts, and dubs the voice of Griphook, who is embodied by Verne Troyer. Richard Griffiths as Vernon Dursley, Harry's Muggle uncle. Smith was one of the two actors Rowling wanted most, along with Coltrane as Hagrid.[14] Julie Walters as Molly Weasley, Ron's caring mother. She shows Harry how to get to Platform ​9 3⁄4. Before Walters was cast, American actress Rosie O'Donnell held talks with Columbus about playing Mrs. Weasley.[21] Production Development In 1997, producer David Heyman searched for a children's book that could be adapted into a well-received film.[6] He had planned to produce Diana Wynne Jones' novel The Ogre Downstairs, but his plans fell through. His staff at Heyday Films then suggested Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which his assistant believed was "a cool idea."[6] Heyman pitched the idea to Warner Bros.[6] and in 1999, Rowling sold the company the rights to the first four Harry Potter books for a reported £1 million (US$1,982,900).[22] A demand Rowling made was for Heyman to keep the cast strictly British, and not to cast foreign actors unless absolutely necessary, nonetheless allowing for the inclusion of Irish actors such as Richard Harris as Dumbledore, and for casting of French and Eastern European actors in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where characters from the book are specified as such.[23] Rowling was hesitant to sell the rights because she "didn't want to give them control over the rest of the story" by selling the rights to the characters, which would have enabled Warner Bros. to make non-author-written sequels.[24]

Although Steven Spielberg initially negotiated to direct the film, he declined the offer.[25] Spielberg reportedly wanted the adaptation to be an animated film, with American actor Haley Joel Osment to provide Harry Potter's voice,[26] or a film that incorporated elements from subsequent books as well.[6] Spielberg contended that, in his opinion, it was like "shooting ducks in a barrel. It's just a slam dunk. It's just like withdrawing a billion dollars and putting it into your personal bank accounts. There's no challenge."[27] Rowling maintains that she had no role in choosing directors for the films and that "[a]nyone who thinks I could (or would) have 'veto-ed' [ sic ] him [Spielberg] needs their Quick-Quotes Quill serviced."[28] Heyman recalled that Spielberg decided to direct A.I. Artificial Intelligence instead.[6]

After Spielberg left, talks began with other directors, including: Chris Columbus, Terry Gilliam, Jonathan Demme, Mike Newell, Alan Parker, Wolfgang Petersen, Rob Reiner, Ivan Reitman, Tim Robbins, Brad Silberling, M. Night Shyamalan and Peter Weir.[6][29][30] Petersen and Reiner both pulled out of the running in March 2000,[31] and the choice was narrowed down to Silberling, Columbus, Parker and Gilliam.[32] Rowling's first choice director was Terry Gilliam,[33] but Warner Bros. chose Columbus, citing his work on other family films such as Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire as influences for their decision.[34] Columbus pitched his vision of the film for two hours, stating that he wanted the Muggle scenes "to be bleak and dreary" but those set in the wizarding world "to be steeped in color, mood, and detail." He took inspiration from David Lean's adaptations of Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948), wishing to use "that sort of darkness, that sort of edge, that quality to the cinematography," while being further inspired by the colour designs from Oliver! (1968) and The Godfather (1972).[6]

"Harry Potter is the kind of timeless literary achievement that comes around once in a lifetime. Since the books have generated such a passionate following across the world, it was important to us to find a director that has an affinity for both children and magic. I can't think of anyone more ideally suited for this job than Chris." — Lorenzo di Bonaventura[34] Steve Kloves was selected to write the screenplay. He described adapting the book as "tough", as it did not "lend itself to adaptation as well as the next two books."[35] Kloves often received synopses of books proposed as film adaptations from Warner Bros., which he "almost never read",[6] but Harry Potter jumped out at him.[6] He went out and bought the book, and became an instant fan of the series.[35] When speaking to Warner Bros., he stated that the film had to be British, and had to be true to the characters.[35] Kloves was nervous when he first met Rowling as he did not want her to think he was going to "[destroy] her baby."[6] Rowling admitted that she "was really ready to hate this Steve Kloves," but recalled her initial meeting with him: "The first time I met him, he said to me, 'You know who my favourite character is?' And I thought, You're gonna say Ron. I know you're gonna say Ron. But he said 'Hermione.' And I just kind of melted."[6] Rowling received a large amount of creative control, an arrangement that Columbus did not mind.

Warner Bros. had initially planned to release the film over 4 July 2001 weekend, making for such a short production window that several proposed directors pulled themselves out of the running. Due to time constraints, the date was put back to 16 November 2001.[36]

Casting Rowling insisted that the cast be kept British.[23] Susie Figgis was appointed as casting director, working with both Columbus and Rowling in auditioning the lead roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione.[37] Open casting calls were held for the main three roles,[38] with only British children being considered.[39] The principal auditions took place in three parts, with those auditioning having to read a page from the novel, then to improvise a scene of the students' arrival at Hogwarts, and finally to read several pages from the script in front of Columbus.[39] Scenes from Columbus' script for the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes were also used in auditions.[40] On 11 July 2000, Figgis left the production, complaining that Columbus did not consider any of the thousands of children they had auditioned "worthy".[40] On 8 August 2000, the virtually unknown Daniel Radcliffe and newcomers Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were selected to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively.[41]

Two British film industry officials requested that the film be shot in the United Kingdom, offering their assistance in securing filming locations, the use of Leavesden Film Studios, as well as changing the UK's child labour laws (adding a small number of working hours per week and making the timing of on-set classes more flexible).[6] Warner Bros. accepted their proposal. Filming began on 29 September 2000 at Leavesden Film Studios and concluded on 23 March 2001,[42] with final work being done in July.[29][43] Principal photography took place on 2 October 2000 at North Yorkshire's Goathland railway station.[44] Canterbury Cathedral and Scotland's Inverailort Castle were both touted as possible locations for Hogwarts; Canterbury rejected Warner Bros. proposal due to concerns about the film's "pagan" theme.[45][46] Alnwick Castle and Gloucester Cathedral were eventually selected as the principal locations for Hogwarts,[6] with some scenes also being filmed at Harrow School.[47] Other Hogwarts scenes were filmed in Durham Cathedral over a two-week period;[48] these included shots of the corridors and some classroom scenes.[49] Oxford University's Divinity School served as the Hogwarts Hospital Wing, and Duke Humfrey's Library, part of the Bodleian, was used as the Hogwarts Library.[50] Filming for Privet Drive took place on Picket Post Close in Bracknell, Berkshire.[48] Filming in the street took two days instead of the planned single day, so payments to the street's residents were correspondingly increased.[48] For all the subsequent film's scenes set in Privet Drive, filming took place on a constructed set in Leavesden Film Studios, which proved to have been cheaper than filming on location.[51] London's Australia House was selected as the location for Gringotts Wizarding Bank,[6] while Christ Church, Oxford was the location for the Hogwarts trophy room.[52] London Zoo was used as the location for the scene in which Harry accidentally sets a snake on Dudley,[52] with King's Cross Station also being used as the book specifies.[53]

Because the American title was different, all scenes that mention the philosopher's stone by name had to be re-shot, once with the actors saying "philosopher's" and once with "sorcerer's".[29] The children filmed for four hours and then did three hours of schoolwork. They developed a liking for fake facial injuries from the makeup staff. Radcliffe was initially meant to wear green contact lenses as his eyes are blue, and not green like Harry's, but the lenses gave Radcliffe extreme irritation. Upon consultation with Rowling, it was agreed that Harry could have blue eyes.[54]

Design and special effects Judianna Makovsky designed the costumes. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them "a mess." Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in "preppie sweaters, 19th century fencing breeches and arm guards."[55] Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.[55]

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy.[37] Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson's Creature Shop providing creature effects.[56] John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times.[57] The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort's face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert (Hagrid's baby dragon); and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.[6]

Music

John Williams Main article: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (soundtrack) John Williams was selected to compose the score.[58] Williams composed the score at his homes in Los Angeles and Tanglewood before recording it in London in September 2001. One of the main themes is entitled "Hedwig's Theme"; Williams retained it for his finished score as "everyone seemed to like it" and therefore it was a recurring theme throughout the series.[59]

Differences from the book Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct.[56] Kloves described the film as being "really faithful" to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.[60]

Several minor characters have been removed from the film version, most prominent among them the spectral History of Magic teacher, Professor Binns, and Peeves the poltergeist. The book's first chapter is from the viewpoint of Vernon and Petunia Dursley the day before they are given Harry to look after, highlighting how non-magical people react to magic. The film removes this, beginning with Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall and Hagrid leaving Harry with the Dursleys (although McGonagall tells Dumbledore how she had been watching the Dursleys all day). Harry's less than pleasant times at Mrs. Figg's are cut from the film while the boa constrictor from Brazil in the zoo becomes a Burmese Python in the film. Some conflicts, such as Harry and Draco's encounter with each other in Madam Malkin's robe shop and midnight duel, are not in the film. Some of Nicolas Flamel's role is changed or cut altogether. Norbert is mentioned to have been taken away by Dumbledore in the film; whilst the book sees Harry and Hermione have to take him by hand to Charlie Weasley's friends. Rowling described the scene as "the one part of the book that she felt [could easily] be changed".[55] As a result, the reason for the detention in the Forbidden Forest was changed: In the novel, Harry and Hermione are put in detention for being caught by Filch when leaving the Astronomy Tower after hours, Neville and Malfoy are given detention when caught in the corridor by Professor McGonagall. In the film, Harry, Hermione and Ron receive detention after Malfoy catches them in Hagrid's hut after hours (Malfoy however, is given detention for being out of bed after hours). Firenze the centaur, who is described in the book as being palomino with light blonde hair, is shown to be dark in the film.[61] The Quidditch pitch is altered from a traditional stadium to an open field circled by spectator towers.[55]

The timeline in the book is not enforced in the film e.g. Harry arrived at the Dursleys in 1981 according to the date revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However, on the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley's certificates from primary school bear the year 2001,[62][63] implying it is set ten years later. Trains bearing the livery of GNER, who operated intercity services on the East Coast Main Line from 1996 to 2007, are seen at Kings Cross station.

Distribution Marketing The first teaser poster was released on 1 December 2000.[64] The first teaser trailer was released via satellite on 2 March 2001 and debuted in cinemas with the release of See Spot Run.[65] The soundtrack was released on 30 October 2001 in a CD format. A video game based on the film was released on 15 November 2001 by Electronic Arts for several consoles.[59] A port for the game, for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox was released in 2003.[66] Mattel won the rights to produce toys based on the film, to be sold exclusively through Warner Brothers' stores.[67] Hasbro also produced products, including confectionery products based on those from the series.[68] Warner Bros. signed a deal worth US$150 million with Coca-Cola to promote the film,[53] although some pindened the deal at $40 million-$50 million worldwide for the movie.[69] Lego produced a series of sets based on buildings and scenes from the film, as well as a Lego Creator video game.[70]

Reception Box office The film had its world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on 4 November 2001, with the cinema arranged to resemble Hogwarts School.[80] The film was greatly received at the box office. Critical response On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 81% based on 198 reviews, with an average rating of 7.06/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone adapts its source material faithfully while condensing the novel's overstuffed narrative into an involving – and often downright exciting – big-screen magical caper."[93] On Metacritic the film has a score of 64 out of 100, based on 36 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[94] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale.[95]

Roger Ebert called Philosopher's Stone "a classic," giving the film four out of four stars, and particularly praising the Quidditch scenes' visual effects.[96] Praise was echoed by both The Telegraph and Empire reviewers, with Alan Morrison of the latter naming it the film's "stand-out sequence".[97][98] Brian Linder of IGN.com also gave the film a positive review, but concluded that it "isn't perfect, but for me it's a nice supplement to a book series that I love".[99] Although criticising the final half-hour, Jeanne Aufmuth of Palo Alto Online stated that the film would "enchant even the most cynical of moviegoers."[100] USA Today reviewer Claudia Puig gave the film three out of four stars, especially praising the set design and Robbie Coltrane's portrayal of Hagrid, but criticised John Williams' score and concluded "ultimately many of the book's readers may wish for a more magical incarnation."[101] The sets, design, cinematography, effects and principal cast were all given praise from Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter, although he deemed John Williams' score "a great clanging, banging music box that simply will not shut up."[102] Todd McCarthy of Variety compared the film positively with Gone with the Wind and put "The script is faithful, the actors are just right, the sets, costumes, makeup and effects match and sometimes exceed anything one could imagine."[103] Jonathan Foreman of the New York Post recalled that the film was "remarkably faithful," to its literary counterpart as well as a "consistently entertaining if overlong adaptation."[104]

Richard Corliss of Time magazine, considered the film a "by the numbers adaptation," criticising the pace and the "charisma-free" lead actors.[105] CNN's Paul Tatara found that Columbus and Kloves "are so careful to avoid offending anyone by excising a passage from the book, the so-called narrative is more like a jamboree inside Rowling's head."[106] Nathaniel Rogers of The Film Experience gave the film a negative review and wrote: "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone is as bland as movies can get."[107] Ed Gonzalez of Slant Magazine wished that the film had been directed by Tim Burton, finding the cinematography "bland and muggy," and the majority of the film a "solidly dull celebration of dribbling goo."[108] Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times was highly negative about the film, saying "[the film] is like a theme park that's a few years past its prime; the rides clatter and groan with metal fatigue every time they take a curve." At Hogwarts, Harry begins learning magic spells and discovers more about his past and parents. After recovering the Remembrall of Gryffindor student Neville Longbottom, Harry is recruited for Gryffindor's Quidditch team as a Seeker, an extremely rare feat for first-year students. On their way to the dorms one night the stair cases change paths leading Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the forbidden floor of Hogwarts. The three discover a giant three-headed dog named Fluffy in a restricted area of the school. Ron then insults Hermione after being embarrassed by her in a charms lesson, causing Hermione to lock herself in the girls' bathroom. She is attacked by a marauding troll, but Harry and Ron save her, befriending her in the process.

The children later find out Fluffy is guarding the Philosopher's Stone, an object that has the power to turn any metal into gold and produce a potion that grants immortality. Harry suspects that Potions teacher and head of Slytherin House Severus Snape is trying to obtain the stone in order to return Voldemort to physical form. Hagrid accidentally reveals to the trio that Fluffy will fall asleep if played music. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide that night to try and find the stone before Snape. They discover an already asleep Fluffy and face a series of safeguards including a deadly plant known as Devil's Snare, a room filled with aggressive flying keys that bruise Harry, and a dangerous life-sized game of chess that almost kills Ron.

After getting past the tasks, Harry discovers that it was Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Quirinus Quirrell who was trying to claim the stone: Snape had actually been protecting Harry all along. Quirrell removes his turban and reveals a weak Voldemort living on the back of his head. Through an enchantment placed by Dumbledore, Harry finds the stone in his possession. Voldemort attempts to bargain the stone from Harry in exchange for reviving his parents, but Harry refuses. Quirrell attempts to kill Harry in response; however, he is instead killed after Harry ends up burning his skin, reducing Quirrell to dust and causing Voldemort's soul to rise from his ashes. Harry is knocked unconscious in the process.

Harry recovers in the school hospital with Dumbledore at his side. Dumbledore explains that the stone has been destroyed and that Ron and Hermione are safe. Dumbledore also reveals how Harry was able to defeat Quirrell: When Harry's mother died to save him, her death gave Harry a love-based protection against Voldemort. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are rewarded with house points for their heroic performances, tying them for first place with Slytherin. Dumbledore then awards ten points to Neville for attempting to stop the trio, granting Gryffindor the House Cup. Harry returns home for the summer, happy to finally have a real home in Hogwarts.
