The Impact of COVID-19 On the Toilet Paper Industry

No one expects a global pandemic to just happen. No one prepares for a global pandemic. So when the world shut down three years ago no one knew what to do. Thus, causing a mass panic to spread across the world. I remember when I went to the grocery store on March 13, 2020 everything was gone. There was no food, no supplies, nothing. 

However, the supply everyone was buying was toilet paper. Panic buying and hoarding caused many stores to sell out of toilet paper very quickly. This caused what was perceived to be a shortage even though there was enough supply for the normal demand. The sudden change in consumer behavior was caused by the fear of shortages in supplies and the shortage was eventually created because of the panic buying. The increase in demand for toilet paper during the pandemic, caused an increase in the individual demand curve leading to an increase in price. The demand curve shifted from D1 to D2.

The panic buying also caused a decrease in supply because there was enough supply only for normal demand. Since the demand was not normal, the manufacturers struggled to keep up with the increase in demand, thus causing a decrease in supply. Manufacturers had to dramatically increase the production of toilet paper to keep up with the demand. The supply curve shifted from S1 to S2 to depict the decrease in supply from before the lockdown to during the lockdown.

There were a number of negative externalities that were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as it increased the demand for toilet paper. Toilet paper is made using wood fibers or paper pulp so the increase in demand causing the increase in production of toilet paper led to more trees being cut down. The increase in deforestation led to negative impacts on climate change and the global threats on the environment. The supply chain disruptions led to an increase in toilet paper. Toilet paper prices increased by an average of 20%. However, since toilet paper is an inelastic good, the demand did not drop even when prices drastically increased.

The Da-Bangg Reloaded Tour that promises to be a unique three-hour extravaganza that will be touring USA and Canada beginning June 22 is one of most awaited live Bollywood events across the globe currently. While, Salman remains the highlight of the show, it will also be the first time ever that Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan will be seen live on stage at a tour. The tour that begins in Atlanta on June 22, hits Chicago on June 23. While the power-packed star show is already making news in Chicago and all across the US, but it may be a special moment for Chicagoans particularly, as the one man who is ensuring everything runs smooth and the audiences get their dose of entertainment is none other than Chicago based Bhavesh Patel. As the international promoter of the Da-Bangg Reloaded Tour, Bhavesh Patel is being working day and night to put everything to perfection but is quick to credit it all to the magic of Salman Khan. He also is all praises for all his promoters across centers who he says believed in him and made the show possible on such a large scale.

It was Salman’s idea Bhavesh who has known Salman khan for about 25 years now, says that their families share a very special relationship. “He’s like family to us and has always been extremely loving towards us,” says Bhavesh talking with a visible fondness for the superstar. On how this idea of bringing the tour to the US came about, Bhavesh says, “It was basically Salman’s idea.” He says, “I remember that I was at Salman’s house. We were all having tea and talking about shows. And just then, Salman said:’ I want to do shows again. I want to connect with my fans.’ So, it was actually Salman’s desire to reconnect with his fans that set the wheels in motion for the Dabangg tour.” He adds, “The shows were first held in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia and then Salman said, let’s do it in US and Canada. That’s when he told me that you are doing my show. In my head, I was thinking that I would be doing the show in Chicago but he told me to be the promoter for the entire US and Canada. So, I was in fact summoned to do this show, which I gladly and earnestly accepted.

The US and Canada tour will be a new experience Bhavesh realizes the frenzy any Salman Khan show creates and knows that many people may have seen the Dabangg show at its earlier destinations or may have caught glimpses of it on You Tube etc. So, in order to give the audiences a totally new, unseen experience he informs that the US and Canada has been totally re-thought. He says, “We call it Da-Bangg Reloaded and it bring along many new things for the audiences in US and Canada. It is for the first time that Katrina Kaif is a part of the show. We have totally re-formatted the show. The stage, the costumes, the acts everything has been re-choreographed. There is a new script to the show.

The preparations are in full swing Managing superstars and their entourage is no easy task. The entire Da-Bangg crew of 150 people arrive in the US, 3 days ahead. On how is Patel ensuring that all the logistics and management is taken care of, he says, “Yes, it’s a mammoth task. We have 8 stars including Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonakshi Sinha, Prabhu Deva, Daisy Shah, Guru Randhawa and Manish Paul. Along with them technicians, staff, production managers comprise of about 150 people. We have been on the project for last 2 years and now we are in the final three-month phase. Thankfully, I have an efficient team who have been taking care of everything from airline tickets to hotel bookings. We are constantly re-checking that everything is in order. But I do believe that all my promoters nationwide are doing a great job.” He admits, “As a promoter there are always challenges but we have done everything to ensure a fantastic show. We have also got on board PRG Worldwide Entertainment Technology Solutions, that lead in entertainment technology globally to be our production partners to ensure a flawless experience. We were originally planning 5 shows but now we are doing 9 shows that says a lot about people’s interest in the show.” He adds, “For my national tour, it would not have been possible without the support of my local promoters.”

On Salman’s recent arrest While preparations were underway for the big Salman Khan show the news of his recent arrest in the blackbuck case must have come as a shock for many. Bhavesh says, “I wouldn’t deny that when the news of Salman’s arrest came, we were stressed. It did send the promoters and the people who had bought the tickets and people who were planning to buy the tickets in a semi panic mode. However, we believed that things will fall in place and they did. I want to reassure all the fans that the show is as per schedule, people who are planning to buy the tickets must know that everything will fall in place. We are not foreseeing any hiccups. I want to thank all my promoters who believed in me. And for the fans we wish to tell them that in any unforeseen situation their money will be refunded to them.”

Being Salman Khan And now that the big news of Salman in the US is travelling far and wide is Bhavesh getting any crazy requests from fans. Bhavesh laughs and says, “We are getting requests every minute. Some people want to just touch Salman, some want to shake hands, some want to take pictures. It’s amazing the following he enjoys.” On knowing Salman personally, Bhavesh says that he has noticed a special star quality in him. “If Salman is at the airport or at a public place and when the situation allows he will stop and oblige the fans. He is a great people’s person. He is a great humanitarian and has a heart of gold. He never forgets people who have stood by him through the ups and downs. And his fan following ranges from 5 year olds to 70 year olds. In fact, extends beyond nationalities. For this show we are seeing interest from not just South Asians but also Americans and others too.

Entertainment business On how the Patel family forayed into the entertainment business, Bhavesh says, “My father, Mr Babu Patel, got associated with live shows back in the 80’s in Houston. He did shows that had Rishi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Padmini Kolhapuri. By mid 80’s we move to Chicago and my dad continued to do shows. We started Sahil but continued in entertainment too. Recalling his first landmark show, Bhavesh says, “In 1992, we did a show with Aamir and Salman, just after Andaz Apna Apna.” He adds, “For my national tour, it would not have been possible without the support of my local promoters. And locally till date all events we have presented with our partners Nick and Mayur Patel of LA TAN. Their support has been invaluable for me.” On the upcoming Da-Bangg show, Bhavesh says, “It’s going to be a full paisa vasool show. Salman will be on stage for an hour and he is personally taking interest in every planning. He just called me the other day to check how the things are moving and he’s really involved in the show.”

He likes to go to the downtown but more than anything else he loves spending time with his friends. Bhavesh who is the youngest national promoter informs that they have taken care to keep the prices affordable. He says a $60 ticket will give you a decent view and in some centers the ticket prices are as less as $39.

Talking about the Chicago edition of the show, he says, “This time I have taken the front seat and I am bringing along a lot changes. In the recent situation, when Salman was arrested, we guaranteed personally that people would get their money back. What makes me confident about this show is that Salman Khan is coming to the US after more than a decade for a show. Both Indians and Pakistanis are his die-hard fans.”

About taking up the responsibility he says, “I had been following the show and took over this show last year when I became a promoter for Bhavesh Patel. holiday event b: holiday gathering at malfoy manor!

the first thing that one notices when walking into the glorious malfoy manor is the magnificent chandelier that hangs over the entryway. it’s a house most envy and few get the privilege of seeing in person. all four floors of the manor are decorated beautifully, the massive yard is filled with twinkling lights, and anyone exploring the property will find that even the stable has been decorated for the holidays - no stone has gone unturned for this event, which is taking place the evening of december 24th. 

those invited to the party are instructed to wear their finest jewels, and no one would dare be seen wearing the same dress or suit as the year before - who knows what witch weekly would have to say about that! by ten o’clock, the party is in full swing. house elves move quickly about the manor, ensuring everyone has food and drink to spare. hired musicians play the loveliest tunes on the grand piano or their violin, mothers talk excitedly in huddles about the latest news in the world of betrothals, fathers enjoy cigars and card games, the younger children in attendance find that malfoy manor is wonderful for a game of hide-and-seek while the children who fancy themselves nearly adults try their hand at socializing like adults as well. 

everyone is very careful about their appearances and behaviors, of course - if they were foolish enough to embarrass themselves, they risk not being invited again, and who would want to miss one of the most talked about events of the year? it is an evening for socializing, for dancing and drinking, but also for those rather important conversations to be had. deals to be made in the shadow of the many corridors that line the manor.

Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 — S. 34 r/w S. 5 — Award — Interference with, when the same causes injustice to either of the parties, contrary to terms of contract — When permissible: The parties are free to decide their own terms and conditions in case of a contract. Once respondent voluntarily agreed that no escalation would be reimbursed even in case of regulation before accepting the contract, respondent could not claim reimbursement of excess of minimum wages on account of hike due to the notification of Government. Further, any departure from the terms and conditions of the contract, unless such condition is arbitrary, would destroy the basic purpose of the contract. [Union of India v. Family and Personal Laws — Hindu Law — Joint Hindu Family/Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)/Coparcenary/Co-owner/Survivorship: Property inherited by a male Hindu from his father, father’s father or father’s father’s father is an ancestral property. Essential feature of ancestral property, according to Mitakshara Law, is that the sons, grandsons, and great grandsons of the person who inherits it, acquire an interest and rights attached to such property at the moment of their birth. Share which a coparcener obtains on partition of ancestral property is ancestral property as regards his male issue. After partition, property in hands of a son continues to be ancestral property and son of that son (whether natural or adopted) takes interest in it and is entitled to it by survivorship. Income Tax Act, 1961 — S. 11 [as existing prior to amendment made in S. 11(6) of the Act vide Finance Act 2 of 2014]: Regarding grant of depreciation claimed by charitable institutions on capital assets, even when the expenditure on acquisition of the assets had been treated earlier as application of income for charitable purposes, approving the ruling in Institute of Banking, Personnel Selection, 2003 SCC OnLine Bom 642, wherein the Court rejecting the view that S. 32 was the only section granting benefit of deduction on account of depreciation, had inter alia held that the income of the Trust is required to be computed under S. 11 on commercial principles after providing for allowance for normal depreciation and deduction thereof from gross income of the Trust, in the present case, orders of the High Courts granting benefit of depreciation on the assets acquired by the respondents assessees/charitable institutions upheld. Further held, the amendment made in S. 11(6) of the Act vide Finance Act 2 of 2014 effective from Assessment Year 2015-16, was prospective in nature. Also, held, that once the assessee is allowed depreciation, he shall be entitled to carry forward the depreciation as well. [CIT v. Rajasthani and Gujarati Charitable Foundation, (2018) 7 SCC 810]

Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 — S. 166 — Fatal accident — Compensation of — Income of deceased: There is nothing in law which requires Tribunal to assess income of deceased only on basis of a salary certificate for arriving at a just and fair compensation to be paid to claimants for loss of life. Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 — Ss. 166 and 165, 2(28), 2(44) and Statement of Objects and Reasons — Compensation claims under the Act — Maintainability: “Use of motor vehicle”, includes non-traffic use. However, causal relationship should exist between the violation and the accident caused. There has to be some act done by the person concerned in causing the accident. The commission or omission must have some nexus with the accident, though the “use” of the motor vehicle concerned need not have an intimate and direct nexus with the accident. [Kalim Khan v. Penal Code, 1860 — S. 306 — Abetment of suicide — Ingredients for invoking of S. 306 — Not made out: As allegations in FIR, relating to mental torture of deceased at the hands of his higher officers, in this case, were completely inadequate not satisfying requirements under S. 306, proceedings initiated against accused quashed. Penal Code, 1860 — Ss. 302, 498-A and 506: In this case appellant-accused was convicted for murder of his wife. It was held by the Supreme Court that the due to some extenuating circumstances like, after killing his wife, appellant tried to kill himself, etc., portion of impugned order, prescribing life sentence for minimum period of 30 yrs, deleted, making it a case of life imprisonment simpliciter. [Nitin Balkisan Gaikwad v. State of Maharashtra, (2018) 7 SCC 685]

Penal Code, 1860 — Ss. 302/149 — Murder trial: In this case due to rivalry between two factions in village led to attack using country-made bombs, hunting sickles and iron pipes and there was death of four persons but all respondent-accused were acquitted by High Court. It was held by the Supreme Court that the High Court erred in eschewing testimonies of witnesses in toto. Minor contradictions and omissions in evidence of witnesses were to be ignored. All eyewitnesses including one who turned hostile consistently spoke about attack on one deceased and his supporters. Witness who gave vivid description of incident was corroborated by other witnesses. However, on oral evidence of witnesses and medical evidence, High Court rightly acquitted some respondents giving them benefit of doubt but acquittal of other respondents by High Court, set aside, convicting them under S. 302 IPC and sentencing them to undergo life imprisonment. Penal Code, 1860 — Ss. 84, 302 and 324 — Murder trial — Applicability of S. 84: Reasonable doubt regarding mental condition of accused at the time of incident was created in the mind of court from materials and evidence available. As prosecution failed to lead any evidence in rebuttal and was not able to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt, conviction of accused under Ss. 302 and 324 IPC, reversed. [Devidas Loka Rathod v. State of Maharashtra, (2018) 7 SCC 718]

Registration Act, 1908 — Ss. 17(1-A) and 49 proviso — Requirement of registration: If document containing contract to transfer right, title or interest in immovable property for consideration is not registered but exhibited, it will bear an endorsement that it is admissible only as evidence of agreement to sell in suit for specific performance under Specific Relief Act and shall not have any effect for purposes of S. 53-A of TP Act. Genuineness, validity and binding nature of document or whether it is hit by any provisions of TP Act or Stamp Act, will have to be adjudicated at appropriate stage after parties adduce oral and documentary evidence. Service Law — Allowances — Special (duty) allowance — Entitlement to — Special duty allowance to CRPF personnel posted in North-Eastern region — Date of reckoning: Respondents are entitled to special (duty) allowance for period during which they were posted in North-Eastern region not w.e.f. 3-8-2005 when office memorandum was issued by Government to that effect. Service Law — Departmental Enquiry — Natural justice — Noncompliance — Inference — When warranted: There is no requirement of appointment of Presenting Officer in each and every case, whether statutory rules enable authorities to make appointment or are silent. When statutory rules are silent with regard to applicability of any facet of principles of natural justice, applicability of principles of natural justice which are not specifically excluded in statutory scheme are not prohibited and can be made applicable in given case to advance cause of justice. Furthermore, Enquiry Officer has to be independent and not representative of disciplinary authority. If he starts acting in any other capacity and proceeds to act in manner as if he is interested in eliciting evidence to punish employee, principle of bias comes into play. [Union of India v.
