2. Author Bio

The author of these work is Gabrielle Beech, a 21-year-old political science major and English minor at The University of Mississippi and from Winston Salem, NC. Her writing influence is Phillis Wheatley, and influenced many of her poems. The author has written two works; a poem and a non-poetry piece. The poem is titled “An Elegy to Jeanette Hester, 1 yr. old” and the non-poetry piece titled “A Letter to Phillis Wheatley.” “An Elegy to Jeanette Hester” is a poem about a one year old child who passed away. Upon seeing her gravestone at the cemetery, hers stood out to Beech, as the girl died at such a young age and she immediately felt compelled to write about her. The mood of this poem of is positive, like Wheatley’s elegies. She sees the good in the situation, as well as acknowledging the beauty of heaven. The ending of the elegy also attempts to provide comfort for the parents of the late child by saying “she is now Free.” Her non-poetry piece is titled “A Letter to Phillis Wheatley” where she addresses Wheatley and praises her work and how she is an inspirational to others including herself. In this, she discusses her writing style and her ability to allow words to flow. This letter was written due to the great inspiration she takes from her. These writings are her only two pieces thus far, but she is expected to write more in the recent future on her blog this coming year.
