Sweden does still do Cold War things. Every three months the first Monday of the month the air raid sirens get tested, and for 2 seconds I forgot this fact when I heard it.

Jag har precis börjat på universitetet i en ny stad och märkte en mystisk sak idag. Hesa Fredrik lät inte hes? I min hemstad lät den faktiskt som om den var lite trött på att tuta men här lät den helt fräsch o mesig. Skulle inte få mig att vilja gömma mig inne. 2/10.

Emergency alerts don’t need to be scary, they need to be easy to notice. I’m not afraid of Hesa Fredrik (VMA) but as a child I thought it was loud (now I do not hear it unless I’m pretty close to an audio transmitter) and it being loud is good but me not being scared of it isn’t bad

This evening, July 8th 2017, around 22:00, our civil defense siren went off on accident.

Man, I was watching a slow documentary on OJ Simpson and almost pissed myself at the sound.

Called my dad in panic when the long “all-clear”-signal didn’t come.

I HAVE A FINAL TEST TOMORROW.

DID NOT NEED THIS RIGHT NOW.

I’ve calmed down now since I’ve seen the explanation strip. 😁

‼️While on the subject of OJ Simpson, I strongly recommend everyone watch one of OJ’s few films; Capricorn One (1977).

Absolutely terrific action film with a surprisingly competent performance from an american-football player like him.

Yep, time to get startled by my new friend "Hesa Fredrik" again! 🥴

The emergency siren tests apparently ran monthly not quarterly while Mr. C was growing up, what with the Cold War and all. Meanwhile, I'm here wondering wtf is going on with the horn(s) out there.

Don't come from a part of the US where weather-related warning sirens are even a thing, so yeah. I may eventually get used to the tests, but evidently not yet.

When we were still in Temporary Apartment, there was actually one local alert, with siren signals and emergency alert SMS messages and everything. A fire at some docks on that side of town which was evidently putting out a lot of smoke. We couldn't even see that from where we were, but yeah that was a bit of a shock. I don't think I'd even been here long enough to do experience any quarterly tests yet.
