• Doris Miller
Doris "Dorie" Miller was a United States Navy cook third class. He was the first black American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest decoration for valor in combat after the Medal of Honor.
Miller was born in Waco, Texas, on October 12th, 1919, to Connery and Henrietta Miller. He was named Doris, as the midwife who assisted his mother was convinced before his birth that the baby would be a girl. He was the third of four sons and helped around the house, cooked meals and did laundry, as well as working on the family farm. He was a fullback on the football team at Waco's Alexander James Moore High School. He began attending the eighth grade again on January 25th, 1937, at the age of 17 but was forced to repeat the grade the following year, so he decided to drop out of school. He filled his time squirrel hunting with a .22 rifle and completed a correspondence course in taxidermy. He applied to join the Civilian Conservation Corps, but was not accepted. At that time, he was 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and weighed more than 200 pounds (91 kg). Miller worked on his father's farm until shortly before his 20th birthday. Miller's nickname "Dorie" may have originated from a typographical error. He was nominated for recognition for his actions on December 7th, 1941, and the Pittsburgh Courier released a story on March 14th, 1942, which gave his name as "Dorie Miller". Since then, some writers have suggested that it was a "nickname to shipmates and friends."
Miller enlisted in the United States Navy for six years on September 16th, 1939. He did his recruit training at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, then was promoted to mess attendant third class, one of the few ratings open at the time to black sailors. After training school, he was assigned to the ammunition ship Pyro (AE-1) and then transferred on January 2nd, 1940, to the Colorado-class battleship West Virginia (BB-48). It was on the West Virginia where he started competition boxing, becoming the ship's heavyweight champion. In July, he was on temporary duty aboard the Nevada (BB-36) at Secondary Battery Gunnery School. He returned to the West Virginia on August 3rd. He was promoted to mess attendant second class on February 16th, 1941.
Miller was a crewman aboard the West Virginia and awoke at 6 a.m. on December 7th, 1941. He served breakfast mess and was collecting laundry at 7:57 a.m. when Lieutenant Commander Shigeharu Murata from the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi launched the first of seven torpedoes that hit West Virginia. The "Battle Stations" alarm went off; Miller headed for his battle station, an anti-aircraft battery magazine amidships, only to discover that a torpedo had destroyed it. He went then to "Times Square" on deck, a central spot aboard the ship where the fore-to-aft and port-to-starboard passageways crossed, reporting himself available for other duty and was assigned to help carry wounded sailors to places of greater safety. Lieutenant Commander Doir C. Johnson, the ship's communications officer, spotted Miller and saw his physical prowess, so he ordered him to accompany him to the conning tower on the flag bridge to assist in moving the ship's captain, Mervyn Bennion, who had a gaping wound in his abdomen where he had apparently been hit by shrapnel after the first Japanese attack. Miller and another sailor lifted the skipper but were unable to remove him from the bridge, so they carried him on a cot from his exposed position on the damaged bridge to a sheltered spot on the deck behind the conning tower where he remained during the second Japanese attack. Captain Bennion refused to leave his post, questioned his officers and men about the condition of the ship, and gave orders and instructions to crew members to defend the ship and fight. Unable to go to the deck below because of smoke and flames, he was carried up a ladder to the navigation bridge, where he died from the loss of too much blood despite aid. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Lieutenant Frederic H. White had ordered Miller to help him and Ensign Victor Delano load the unmanned number 1 and number 2 Browning .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine guns aft of the conning tower. Miller was not familiar with the weapon, but White and Delano instructed him on how to operate it. Delano expected Miller to feed ammunition to one gun, but his attention was diverted and, when he looked again, Miller was firing one of the guns. White then loaded ammunition into both guns and assigned Miller the starboard gun. Miller fired the gun until he ran out of ammunition, when he was ordered by Lieutenant Claude V. Ricketts to help carry the captain up to the navigation bridge out of the thick oily smoke generated by the many fires on and around the ship; Miller who was officially credited with downing at least two enemy planes. "I think I got one of those Jap planes. They were diving pretty close to us," he said later. Japanese aircraft eventually dropped two armor-piercing bombs through the deck of the battleship and launched five 18-inch (460 mm) aircraft torpedoes into her port side. When the attack finally lessened, Miller helped move injured sailors through oil and water to the quarterdeck, thereby "unquestionably saving the lives of a number of people who might otherwise have been lost." The ship was heavily damaged by bombs, torpedoes, and resulting explosions and fires, but the crew prevented her from capsizing by counter-flooding a number of compartments. Instead, West Virginia sank to the harbor bottom in shallow water as her surviving crew abandoned ship, including Miller; the ship was raised and restored for continued service in the war. On the West Virginia, 132 men were killed and 52 were wounded from the Japanese attack. On December 13, Miller reported to the heavy cruiser Indianapolis (CA-35).
On January 1st, 1942, the Navy released a list of commendations for actions on December 7th. Among them was a single commendation for an unnamed black man. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) had asked President Franklin D. Roosevelt to award the Distinguished Service Cross to the unknown black sailor. The Navy Board of Awards received a recommendation that the sailor be considered for recognition. On March 12th, an Associated Press story named Miller as the sailor, citing the African-American newspaper Pittsburgh Courier; additional news reports credited Lawrence D. Reddick with learning the name through correspondence with the Navy Department. In the following days, Senator James M. Mead (D-NY) introduced a Senate bill to award Miller the Medal of Honor, and Representative John D. Dingell, Sr. (D-MI) introduced a matching House bill. Miller was recognized as one of the "first US heroes of World War II". He was commended in a letter signed by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox on April 1st, and the next day, CBS Radio broadcast an episode of the series They Live Forever, which dramatized Miller's actions. Black organizations began a campaign to honor Miller with additional recognition. On April 4, the Pittsburgh Courier urged readers to write to members of the congressional Naval Affairs Committee in support of awarding the Medal of Honor to Miller. On May 11th, President Roosevelt approved the Navy Cross for Miller. On May 27th, Miller was personally recognized by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise (CV-6) at anchor in Pearl Harbor. Nimitz said of Miller's commendation, "This marks the first time in this conflict that such high tribute has been made in the Pacific Fleet to a member of his race and I'm sure that the future will see others similarly honored for brave acts."
Miller was advanced in rank to mess attendant first class on June 1st, 1942. On June 27th, the Pittsburgh Courier called for him to be allowed to return home for a war bond tour along with white war heroes. On November 23rd, Miller returned to Pearl Harbor and was ordered on a war bond tour while still attached to Indianapolis. In December, and January 1943, he gave presentations in Oakland, California, in his hometown of Waco, in Dallas, and to the first graduating class of black sailors from Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He was featured on the 1943 Navy recruiting poster "Above and beyond the call of duty", designed by David Stone Martin. He then reported to Puget Sound Navy Yard at Bremerton, Washington on May 15th, 1943 when he was assigned to the newly constructed escort carrier Liscome Bay (CVE-56). He was advanced in rank to cook third class on June 1st. The ship had a crew of 960 men, and its primary functions were to serve as a convoy escort, to provide aircraft for close air support during amphibious landing operations, and to ferry aircraft to naval bases and fleet carriers at sea. After training in Hawaii waters, Liscome Bay left Pearl Harbor on November 10th, 1943 to join the Northern Task Force, Task Group 52. Miller's carrier took part in the Battle of Makin (invasion of Makin by units of the Army's 165th Regimental Combat Team, 27th Infantry Division) which had begun on November 20th. On November 24th, the day after Makin was captured by American soldiers and the eve of Thanksgiving that year (the cooks had broken out the frozen turkeys from Pearl Harbor), the Liscome Bay was cruising near Butaritari (Makin's Atol's main island) when it was struck just before dawn in the stern by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-175 (fired four torpedoes at Task Group 5312). The carrier's own torpedoes and aircraft bombs including 2,0000 pounders were detonated a few moments later, causing the ship to sink in 23 minutes. There were 272 survivors from the crew of over 900, but Miller was among the two-thirds of the crew listed as "presumed dead". His parents were informed that he was missing in action on December 7th, 1943. Liscome Bay was the only ship lost in the Gilbert Islands operation.
A memorial service was held for Miller on April 30th, 1944, at the Second Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, sponsored by the Victory Club. On May 28th, a granite marker was dedicated at Moore High School in Waco to honor him. Miller was officially declared dead by the Navy on November 25th, 1944, a year and a day after the loss of Liscome Bay. One of his brothers also had served during World War II. Miller was 24 years old at the time of his death. Miller's legacy continues in many memorials to his service. Doris Miller Memorial, a public art installation honoring Miller on the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas. A bronze commemorative plaque at the Doris Miller Park housing community located near Naval Station Pearl Harbor; organized by the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and dedicated on October 12th, 1991, which would have been Miller's 72nd birthday. Even the U.S Navy honored Miller with the USS Miller (FF-1091), a destroyer escort (reclassified as a Knox-class frigate on June 30th, 1975) was commissioned on June 30th, 1973, in honor of Miller. Miller's likeness and story has also been portrayed in films, such as Miller being awarded the Navy Cross was portrayed in the 2019 film Midway. In Michael Bay's 2001 film Pearl Harbor, Miller is portrayed by actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Although he is not identified by name, Miller is portrayed by Elven Havard in the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora!

Rutledge Trilateral Commission | Institutional History | Headcanon
The Rutledge Trilateral Commission was chartered in 1868 by Edward J. Rutledge in Raleigh's beaming business district. Edward J., William H. Harrison, Mayor of Raleigh, and Richard W. Holden, Governor of North Carolina, funded the RTC for its initial five years with seven-hundred thousand (700,000) dollars of the State's federal reconstruction aid. That investment was repaid to North Carolina in 1873, at which time it became clear that the RTC's role was distribution for the companies that sprang up in the 70s, 80s, and into the twentieth century.
Rutledge Lumber, Co. was established in 1873, followed by Piedmont Mining four years later, and Rutledge Mills in 1887. These companies would be joined by Rutledge Tin Co. (1898) and Rutledge Coal Co. (1899) to form the RTC's core 'client base.' For those clients, the RTC provided transportation and distribution of raw materials like lumber and grain, sold them at market, and relayed the profits. When Pendleton J. Rutledge Sr. (1900-1924) became the RTC's 2nd President in 1900 he formalized its role in relation to its clients, which laid the foundation for what the Commission would become.
In the Market Collapse of 1929 and ensuing Depression of the 30s the RTC lost a staggering sixty-million dollars. There were monumental losses for each Rutledge company. Pendleton J. Rutledge Jr., 3rd President (1925-1940), recorded that the Sr. Pendleton stored twenty-five-percent (25%) of commissions received from 1910-1922 into a Trust; he further acknowledged that the Trust saved the Commission from receivership. The onslaught of spending bills FDR passed in the 1930s as well as the postwar economy of the late 40s and early 50s assisted in the Commission's survival.
On July 19th, 1964, John Jay Sr. discovered an on-going investigation into the Rutledge Banking Corp. led by then-Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. He informed the Family during their 77th Convention (1964-1966) and ignited a socio-political crisis that resulted in a vote of no-confidence against 5th President Pendleton J. Rutledge IV (1955-1965) on January 18th, 1965. John Jay Sr. (1965-2001) was swiftly elected to assume leadership and his first official act abolished the Presidency and established the RTC's first Chairmanship. With expediency John Jay nullified the Commission's antiquated Charter of 1868 and restructured it from the distribution company it had been into the national conglomerate it would become. Throughout the early 70s the Commission purchased controlling interests in fourteen of sixteen family companies, restructuring them into subsidiaries operating under consolidated management. In 1973, John Jay Sr. proposed to the 81st Convention (1972-1974) that the RTC purchase controlling interest in the Rutledge Banking Corp., which remained under looming threat of investigation by the Justice Department/Federal Govt. Naturally, his proposition gave rise to fervent in-fighting but ultimately succeeded when the Family approved his measure by 77% of the Silent Vote.
On March 10th, 1976, U.S. Attorney General Arthur J. McCullen publicly filed charges against the Rutledge Banking Corp. Afterward the Federal Govt. launched an extensive probe into the Bank's operations, and for eight years dragged the Rutledges into one of the most intense Battles of family history, replete with a four-year trial (1980-1984) and national press coverage. The Battle reduced the Banking Corp. in size and revenue for nine years, barred the Bank from public markets for six months, and inadvertently resulted in a blanket termination of RBC employees outside the Carolinas. From the rubble emerged a Family Hero, John Jay Sr., whom is credited for protecting their 3rd oldest Institution in continuous operation.
In 1988 John Jay Sr. appropriated one-hundred million dollars to the reconstruction of the RTC's corporate Headquarters. J.P. Bronson was the architect commissioned to lead the project. In lieu of the brick-and-mortar composition of the original structure, the new building has an exterior of gorilla, anti-tempered glass. It spans ninety-five (95) floors and is located in Center City Raleigh.
The Rutledge Trilateral Commission made the Fortune 500 rankings, for the first time, in 1993 with annual revenues of eighteen billion dollars and net profit of five-point-two billion. The RTC climbed into the Top 15 of the Fortune 500 list ten years later under John Jay Jr., 2nd Chairman (2001-Present), with one-hundred-and-seventy billion in revenues and net profit of eighty-point-four billion dollars. With such record profit margins (largest in family history), the RTC was mandated by the 102nd Convention to gift ten billion dollars every five years to the Rutledge Family Trust in 2014. The first such gift is scheduled for April, 2019.

The Punisher
The Punisher (Francis "Frank" Castle, born Castiglione) is a fictional antihero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974).
The character is depicted as a Sicilian-American vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his campaign against crime. Driven by the deaths of his wife and two children, who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City's Central Park, the Punisher wages a one-man war on crime using various weapons. His family's killers were the first to be slain. A war veteran and a U.S. Marine Corps Scout/Sniper in Force Recon, Castle is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship. He is well known by his skull motif on his chest.
The Punisher's brutal nature and willingness to kill made him an anomaly in mainstream American comic books when he debuted in 1974. By the late 1980s, the Punisher was part of a wave of psychologically-troubled antiheroes. At the height of his popularity, the character was featured in four monthly publications: The Punisher, The Punisher War Journal, The Punisher: War Zone, and The Punisher Armory.
Despite his violent actions and dark nature, the Punisher has enjoyed some mainstream success on television, making guest appearances on series such as Spider-Man and The Super Hero Squad Show, where the depiction of his violent behavior was toned down for family viewers. In feature films, Dolph Lundgren portrayed the Punisher in the 1989 film The Punisher, as did Thomas Jane in the 2004 film The Punisher, and Ray Stevenson in Punisher: War Zone. Jon Bernthal portrayed the character in the second season of Daredevil and the spin-off The Punisher, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
> Characterization
The character has been described as being obsessed with vengeance; Garth Ennis noted that the character of the Punisher "sees the world in very black and white terms, he solves his problems with utter finality" and that "his response to any problem: when in doubt, hit back hard."
Punisher's backstory initially introduced him as a veteran of the Vietnam War. In this capacity, he appeared in the comic book The 'Nam, about the conflict. However, this dated the character as the years passed and the war was increasingly in the past.
> Skills, weapons, and abilities
The Punisher is the recipient of intense infantry training from the United States Marine Corps and special operations training by Force Recon. As a Marine he went through Airborne School, UDT/BUDs, and the Q-Course; as well as cross-training with the Australian SASR during the Vietnam War. From this training, the Punisher is proficient in not only basic infantry and special operations skills, but the use and maintenance of specialized firearms, equipment, and explosive ordnance. He is highly trained in infiltration into heavily guarded enemy territories and structures for the purpose of assassination, capture, and military intelligence. As a Scout/Sniper he is highly trained in various forms of camouflage and stealth in different environments. He is also highly adept at hand-to-hand combat, and has been trained in multiple forms of martial arts such as Chin Na, Hwa Rang Do, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Nash Ryu Jujutsu, Ninjutsu, Shorin-ryu Karate and Systema. Both Nick Fury and Tony Stark have commented on how extraordinarily high his pain tolerance is. He does not take painkillers, as he feels that their benefit of dulling pain is not worth the side effects of drowsiness and slowed reflexes.
He maintains multiple safehouses and vehicles around the greater New York City area as well as multiple forged identities and bank accounts (most of the funds and equipment aiding him in his work being taken from the criminals he hunts). The Punisher has a Kevlar uniform which protects him from most gunfire, though he can still suffer concussive injury or penetration from sufficient or repeated impacts. The white skull emblem on his chest is used both to intimidate his enemies and to lure their fire to the more heavily protected area of his armor. The design was supposedly taken from either a Vietcong sniper, or the demon Olivier. The Punisher uses a large variety of firearms in his war on crime; including fully automatic rifles, shotguns, flame throwers, or whatever he can get his hands on. Though he has a preference for guns, the Punisher has been using technology derived from super-villains and other costumed characters, such as the Green Goblin's pumpkin bombs, a modified Goblin Glider, and a Doctor Octopus tentacle that he can shrink down for easy storage via Pym Particles.
Aside from his physical prowess, the Punisher demonstrates intensive focus and mental discipline, providing a strong resistance against psychic and telepathic powers that are used against him. When Letha and Lascivious try to manipulate his aggression, for example, he scoffs at their attempt, saying, "It doesn't feel different from any other day".

Curtis "Curt" Metcalf is a genius inventor who, in his Hardware identity, uses a variety of high-tech gadgets to fight organised crime. A central irony of the series (of which Metcalf is fully aware) is that Metcalf's employer, respected businessman Edwin Alva—who provides the resources Metcalf uses to create Hardware's hardware—is secretly the crime boss whom Hardware is trying to bring down.[1]
Metcalf was a working class child prodigy who was discovered aged 12–13 by a big-time businessman, Edwin Alva Sr., who with the blessing of Curt's parents, enrolled Curt in A Better Chance, "a program intended to get minority students into elite prep schools".[3] Curt proved to be much smarter than all the other prep school students, graduating at age 14, and earning his first college degree at age 15. Alva paid for Metcalf's whole college tuition up to six additional college degrees, in exchange for Metcalf coming to work, after graduation, in Alva Industries' "Inspiration Factory" program, with his "own lab, entirely too big a salary, and mandate to indulge [his] curiosity by investigating whatever struck [his] fancy"; Metcalf's inventions made Edwin Alva Sr. many millions of dollars.[3]
After a few years, and wanting a share of profits earned by his inventions, Metcalf asked Alva for a "royalty point or two". Alva's answer was: "Curtis let us dispense with any misconceptions you may be labouring under. You are not family. You are an employee. Neither are you heir apparent. You are a cog in the machine. My machine. You are not respected, Curtis. You are merely useful. You may go now".[3] Metcalf's first thought was to quit, but his contract forbade him from working for any competitors: "If [he wanted] to work in [his] field [of expertise], [he] had to do it for Alva".
Metcalf thought that with some advanced hacking, he could find something on Alva to use as leverage, but found that almost everything about Alva was "Stone Cold Crooked":
Metcalf: "It took me weeks to put it all together, but the evidence was clear and incontrovertible. Edwin Alva Sr. is at the center of an incredibly complex web of corruption. My benefactor and role model, the economic savior and humanitarian pillar of the city of Dakota has connections to organized crime. He launders tens of millions of dollars in drug money, he has most of the city and state government in his pocket, he illegally manufactures weapons and sells them to foreign governments".[3]
Metcalf decided to stop Alva first by anonymously sending "copies of evidence to the FBI, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the state and local police, several newspapers and, just for fun, Hard Copy and A Current Affair".[3] Then he waited a while for the fireworks, but learned that Alva was too big, beyond the reach of the law. But Metcalf decided that maybe Alva wasn't beyond his own reach; so with Alva's own equipment and resources, Curt created "Hardware - the High Tech Creature of the Night, who's been checkmating Alva's illegal operations for the last ten months is, in a way Alva's own creation".[3]
So just about every night Metcalf dons a selection of his many high tech gadgets (which he hides away in an abandoned basement/bomb shelter connected to his private lab) to track down and destroy all of Alva's illegal business operations and Alva's factories where weapons of war are manufactured: "This used to be a bomb shelter. Now it's where I keep all the stuff I've scammed from Alva. He's turned the city upside down looking for Hardware. I live in his basement".[3]
Hardware works with many other superheroes over his career, such as Blood Syndicate and Icon. He even teams up with a few that he considers fictional, such as Steel and Superman. In one instance, he assists in the evacuation of Utopia Park, a newly built theme park, which is being destroyed by riots.
DC UniverseEdit
Following the death of Darkseid (as chronicled in Final Crisis), the space-time continuum was torn asunder, threatening the existence of both the Dakotaverse and the mainstream DC universe. The being known as Dharma was able to use energies that he harnessed from Rift (upon that being's defeat in Worlds Collide) to merge the two universes, creating an entirely new continuity. Only Dharma, Icon, and Superman are aware that Dakota and its inhabitants ever existed in a parallel universe.[4]
In the revised continuity, Hardware and the other Milestone characters have apparently always existed in the DC Universe. The first non-Dakota heroes he encounters are the Justice League of America, whom he meets while aiding the Shadow Cabinet in kidnapping Kimiyo Hoshi, and stealing the remains of Arthur Light.[5]
During the mission, he defeats Red Arrow, and expresses an attraction to Vixen. After attempting to flee the Justice League Satellite with Light's shrunken corpse, Hardware is surprised and beaten into unconsciousness by Hawkman.[6] It is later revealed that, during Hoshi's brief period of captivity, Hardware gave her a new costume which can collect and assimilate light energy. Due to this new function on her suit, Hoshi is able to regain her powers and Dr. Light's identity after Curtis gives her Arthur's remains.
Soon after, Hardware teamed up with Blue Beetle in order to stop SYSTEM smugglers from selling stolen Alva Industries technology to the notorious Intergang. The pair of heroes were ambushed by one of the smugglers wearing advanced SYSTEMatic powered armor designed by the new Gizmo, an ally of SYSTEM. Hardware begrudgingly realized he needed the Beetle's help to defeat the smugglers and capture the stolen weaponry. Despite his initial dislike of Blue Beetle, Hardware and the young hero part on friendly terms after successfully rounding up the smugglers.[7]
Hardware later appears in the aftermath of the JLA's dissolution following Final Crisis. After raiding the hideout of Dakota crime lord Holocaust, he is forced into helping the remaining Justice League members track down Dr. Light, who went missing while chasing Shadow Thief and Starbreaker.[8] Using a tracer installed in her costume, Hardware is able to track Dr. Light and the others to the Shadow Cabinet's HQ, Shadowspire. There, Hardware and the League confront Starbreaker, who has transformed into a massive being made of energy after consuming Dharma's blood.
During the battle, Hardware is successfully able to persuade young hero Firestorm from killing Shadow Thief, a feat that impresses Vixen. Thanks to the energy collectors in Dr. Light's suit and some assistance from John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps, the group is able to defeat Starbreaker once and for all.[4]
Another new beginningEdit
Following the events of Flashpoint, Hardware becomes a mentor of sorts to Static, who has now left Dakota and moved to New York City. He provides the youth with a modified flying disk and a new costume which possesses a holographic interface that allows them to communicate over vast distances. He also gets Static a job as an intern at the New York branch of STAR Labs.

Navajo Code Talker who fought in World War II dies at 97
CHINLE, Ariz. – Fleming Begaye Sr., a member of the top-secret Navajo Code Talker program that developed an unbreakable code language during World War II, has died, according to Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.
Begaye was 97.
Begaye served as a Navajo Code Talker in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945 and fought in the Battle of Tarawa and the Battle of Tinian, the Great Navajo Nation noted in a statement. He spent one year in a naval hospital for service injuries.
Begaye was born in 1921 in Red Valley, Arizona, and resided in Chinle, Arizona, when he died Friday, the Great Navajo Nation says. His cause of death was not released.
“We offer our heartfelt appreciation to the family for sharing his life with us,” Nez said via Twitter on Friday. “May the Creator bless you and your family with strength and comfort.”
Tumblr media
As a code talker, Begaye was one of a group of Navajos who learned a secret, unbreakable language that was used to send information on tactics, troop movements and orders over the radio and telephone during WWII.
The code was indecipherable to the Japanese and a key factor in American military victories at Iwo Jima, Saipan, and several other major battles.
At Iwo Jima, code talkers passed more than 800 error-free messages in 48 hours, according to the congressional law honoring the program.
“Were it not for the Navajos,” said Maj. Howard Connor, the signal officer of the Navajos, “the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.”
Begaye was one of three surviving code talkers who were honored at the White House in November 2017. The event was overshadowed by President Donald Trump’s attempt to insult Sen. Elizabeth Warren by calling her Pocahontas.
Prior to that comment, Trump spoke in awe on a topic he admitted he had known little about beforehand.
“I have to say, I said to Gen. (John) Kelly … I said, ‘How good were these code talkers? What was it?’ He said, ‘Sir, you have no idea. You have no idea how great they were — what they’ve done for this country, and the strength and the bravery and the love that they had for the country,’” Trump said, turning to the code talkers, “and that you have for the country.”
The Navajo Nation said that less than seven code talkers are still alive of the more than 400 who served.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said the state had lost an “American hero” with Begaye’s death.
“Today, Arizona celebrates the life of Mr. Begaye, and we express our gratitude for his service and sacrifice in defense of freedom,” Ducey said in a statement. “We express our deepest sympathies to Mr. Begaye’s family, friends and the entire Navajo Nation.”
How the Navajo Code Talkers came to be
The plan to use the Navajo language as a secret code began with Philip Johnston, who had spent his childhood on a Navajo reservation while his parents served as missionaries, according to the CIA.
The US military had used the Choctaw language during World War I as part of its secret code. Germany and Japan worked to learn Choctaw and other Native American languages between the wars, the CIA said.
But the Navajo language is particularly tricky for non-Navajo people, and it is not written. The Marines recruited and trained 29 Navajos at Camp Elliott near San Diego beginning in 1942.
Those 29 Navajo created more than 200 new Navajo words for military terms and committed them to memory.
“I studied on my own at night,” Joe Hosteen Kellwood, one of the code talkers, said of his training. “You had to memorize all the words at the time, 211 words. They were long words. I spelled it. I learned.”
In simulated battles, the Navajo code proved much faster than the encrypting machines being used at the time. So in August 1942, 15 code talkers — just over half the recruits — joined the Marines for combat duty amid the assault on Guadalcanal.
After that first battle, Maj. Gen. Alexander Vandegrift, commander of the 1st Marine Division, sent word back to the US asking for more Navajos, according to code talker Peter MacDonald.
“This Navajo code is terrific,” Vandegrift said, according to MacDonald. ” ‘The enemy never understood it,’ he said. ‘We don’t understand it either, but it works. Send us some more Navajos.’ ”
More than 400 Navajo had learned the code by the end of the war. None of the original 29 code talkers who invented the language are still alive. Chester Nez, the last surviving member of the original 29, died in 2014.
The program wasn’t declassified by the military until 1968, and it would take several more decades before the story received wider recognition. In 2001, President George W. Bush presented the 29 original Navajo Code Talkers with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Black History Month: 15 Influential Black Superheroes
Since their first appearances in comics in the ’60s, black superheroes have provided a mirror to many generations of children who have ever wanted to have superpowers. Early versions of superheroes like Black Panther, Luke Cage and Storm have paved the way for their contemporaries as well as modern incarnations of black superheroes.
RELATED: Black Heroes Matter: 17 Black Defenders Of The MCU
After appearing on the pages of Marvel and DC Comics, these heroes also inspired black creators like Dwayne McDuffie and Roy Okupe to make their own heroes, filling a void by the sporadic appearances in mainstream superhero comics. Today, black superheroes can be found on the page and on the screen in films, television shows and animated series. To commemorate Black History Month and the influence of black superheroes, here are 15 black superheroes that have helped make comic book continuity more inclusive.
STORM
One of the most famous members of the X-Men, Ororo Monroe was created by Lein Wein and David Cockcrum and first appeared in May 1975. As a mutant, she has the ability to control the weather and fly; she is also an expert thief and skilled in hand-to-hand combat. She has led the X-Men herself a few times, notably after the events of the “Dark Phoenix Saga” and when the main X-Men team split into the gold and blue teams.
She has also been a member of The Avengers and the Fantastic Four, and even served as the Queen of Wakanda when she briefly married her long-time lover T’Challa, the Black Panther. On top of that, she is descended from a long-line of witch-priestesses; her mother was a princess of a Kenyan tribe, and Ororo herself was worshipped as a goddess before being recruited by Professor Xavier for the X-Men. Currently, she is the leader of the Extraordinary X-Men.
LUKE CAGE
Luke Cage is the first black comic book character to star in his own series. Making his first appearance in 1972, he was created by Archie Goodwin, John Romita Sr and George Tuska. After being imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, he is involuntarily subjected to an experimental procedure that gives him bulletproof skin and super strength. Once he is freed, he teams up with Iron Fist to form the duo Power Man and Iron Fist and becomes a hero for hire.
As Powerman and part of the original Heroes For Hire team, he would work with not only Iron Fist, but also Misty Knight and Jessica Jones. He would also become a member of The Defenders and The Mighty Avengers, as well as the Thunderbolts. In 2015, Luke Cage made his first onscreen appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Netflix original series “Jessica Jones.” The following year, he would star in his own Netflix spin-off series “Luke Cage,” which was recently renewed for a second season.
MISTY KNIGHT
Created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones, Misty Knight leapt into comics in January 1975, debuting just a few months before Storm to become one of Marvel’s first black female superheroes. She was an NYPD officer until a bomb attack caused her arm to be amputated. After quitting, she was given a bionic arm by Tony Stark that gave her super strength. Suitably “armed,” she met Colleen Wing and together they formed their own private investigation agency, becoming the crime fighting duo, Daughters of The Dragon.
The two would have their own adventures and provide assistance to Power Man and Iron Fist, the aforementioned Heroes For Hire. Misty would also reform Heroes For Hire with a new team during the events of Marvel’s Civil War, leading the team and revamping it again after the immediate end of tensions. She would also form and lead the team known as The Fearless Defenders alongside Valkyrie. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she can be seen in a prominent role on the Netflix series “Luke Cage” and is portrayed by Simone Missick.
STATIC
Originally a part of Milestone Comics, Static was created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle and Michael Davis. Named after the first black person to attend the law school at University of Florida, Virgil Hawkins gains the ability to manipulate electro-magnetic energy after unwittingly being caught up in a big showdown between Dakota’s gang wars and doused with an experimental chemical. The event would become known as “The Big Bang” and would not only affect Virgil but those who would become Virgil’s future archenemies.
Virgil became Static after finding other “Big Babies” that got powers and chose to cause problems in Dakota. After Milestone Comics closed in 1997, Static was reintroduced in the animated series “Static Shock,” which aired from 2000 to 2004. The show gave Static an entry point into the DC Comics Universe, where he would eventually become a member of the Teen Titans. Static would also make appearances in the animated shows “Justice League: Unlimited” and “Young Justice.”
MONICA RAMBEAU
Monica Rambeau was created by Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. Since her 1982 debut, she has been known by several superhero names. She first went by Captain Marvel, after being exposed to extra-dimensional energy and gaining the ability to convert her body to light. Once she joined The Avengers, she learned to control her powers and eventually became their leader. Later on, she would change her name to Photon after teaming up with the son of the original Captain Marvel and realizing he wanted to use the name for himself.
After a while, he changed his name to Photon and Monica changed her named to Pulsar. Eventually, Monica would become the leader of the team Nextwave, but didn’t use any code-name in the field. During Marvel’s “Infinity” storyline, she took up her current superhero alias, Spectrum, and became field leader of Luke Cage’s Mighty Avengers team. Currently, she is a prominent member of the The Ultimates, fighting cosmic threats to the Earth and the very universe itself.
VIXEN
Vixen, aka Mari McCabe, would’ve been DC’s first African female DC superhero to have her own series had it not been cancelled. Nonetheless, she has managed to have a decent run in comics after her 1981 debut. Created by Gerry Conway and Bob Oskner, Vixen can use the abilities of any animal by focusing on them with the Tantu totem given to her ancestors by the African trickster god Anansi. After a brief time as a solo hero, Vixen became a member of the Justice League, as well as Suicide Squad, with the majority of her work having been in the former.
In addition to making modern-day appearances in the comic series “Justice League of America,” Vixen also starred in the limited series “Return of The Lion.” Recently, Vixen’s origins were told in a DC Rebirth one-shot. Vixen has also made appearances in many television series, including “Justice League Unlimited,” “Batman: The Brave and The Bold,” “Arrow” and her own CW seed animated series, appropriately titled “Vixen.”
JOHN STEWART
A member of the Green Lantern Corps, John Stewart debuted in 1971, making history as the first African American character in DC Comics. Created by Dennis O’Neal and Neal Adams, he was originally chosen as a backup Green Lantern to then-current Green Lantern Hal Jordan. After Hal Jordan relinquished the title in the 1980s, he became Green Lantern full-time. Using the ring worn by all Green Lanterns, he can create anything that his imagination can drum up as well as the powers of flight and invulnerability.
During and after his time in the Green Lantern Corps, he has become the first mortal Guardian of The Universe, leader of the peacekeeping troop the Darkstars, as well as a member of The Justice League. Off the page, his character has become well known due to his appearances in animated series, including “Justice League,” “Justice League Unlimited,” “Static Shock” and “Young Justice.” He is set to appear as a main character in the upcoming film “Green Lantern Corps.”
STRIKE GUARD
Strike Guard is a character and comic book series created by Ayodele Elegba and published by the Nigerian based company, Vortex Comics. A superhero inspired by Yoruba spiritual traditions, Strike Guard’s main protagonist is a college kid named Abolaji Coker. After Abolaji’s love interest Chi Chi gets involved with the leader of a cult, Abolaji and his best friend Peter Antai are murdered.
After being thrown into the grave of an ancient warrior named Ajabeja, Abolaji’s soul makes contact with Ajabeja’s while in limbo. Abolaji strikes a deal to share his body with Ajabeja in exchange for returning to life. Gaining an open consciousness of the spirit realm and the opportunity to avenge his friend’s death, Abolaji becomes Strike Guard to protect people from spirits lingering in the real world. In this way, Strike Guard is a mythical superhero akin to Marvel’s Thor, providing a refreshing take on mythological superheroes through its creative use of the Orisha thunder god Sango.
CYBORG
Created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, Cyborg is one of the most iconic members of the Teen Titans, as well as the Justice League. In his first iteration, Cyborg was a normal teenager named Victor Stone until his scientist parents conducted an experiment with an inter-dimensional portal that went wrong. A monster comes through, killing Victor’s mother and severely mauling Victor before his dad forces it back into the portal. In order to save his life, Victor’s dad inserts experimental prosthetics on part of his face and body.
Afterwards, Victor struggles to adjust to his cybernetic parts due to the fearful reactions from others and the fact that he can no longer participate in athletic hobbies. Once he stops a former friend from conducting terrorist acts, his sense of purpose is renewed and he decides to join the Teen Titans. Later on, when a new incarnation of the Teen Titans came together, he served as a mentor to them. Later still, in the New 52 reboot of DC Comics, his origins include the coming of Darkseid. In this version of the character, he was established as a founding member of the Justice League. Currently, he stars in his own ongoing series that has been published since 2015.
WALE WILLIAMS
Hailing from YouNeek Studios and created by Roye Okupe, Wale Williams’s story is set in a futuristic society known as Lagoon City, which is inspired by the real island of Lagos. Wale is a twenty-something young man who returns home to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his father, an inventor. He discovers that his home has changed drastically after the poorest areas have been overrun by corrupt leaders and robotic drones called DREDS.
At the center of this corruption is the masked leader Oniku, whose goal is to “cleanse” Lagoon City while manipulating the lower class. In order to combat this threat, Wale Williams dons an exo suit designed by his father and becomes the superhero EXO to protect his city. As a character, Wale Williams is a wealthy kid with integrity, defending the poorest of his community and his remaining family while searching for his father. Likened to DC’s Cyborg and Marvel’s Iron Man, Wale Williams is a Nigerian superhero for a modern and futuristic age.
MILES MORALES
The creation of Miles Morales by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli was inspired by Barack Obama and Donald Glover. Originally becoming Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel universe, the black-Puerto Rican teenager would come into the role after being bitten by a spider containing the experimental formula that gave Peter Parker his spidey powers. At first, he is unhappy with his powers, wanting to be a normal kid, until he witnesses the death of Peter Parker.
Realizing that he could’ve helped Peter, he decides to take up the mantle of Spider-Man and later dons a new black-and-red costume given to him by S.H.I.E.L.D. After the Ultimate Marvel Universe is destroyed, Miles takes over Peter Parker’s patrol of New York in the mainstream Marvel Universe when Peter decides to take a global approach to his Spider-Man duties. Miles would also become an Avenger in Marvel’s “All New All Different Avengers” series and a founding member of Marvel’s newest team, The Champions.
THE MANTIMAJI
Elijah Alexander is a rising district attorney who has been dealing with cases involving a mysterious group of criminals known as the New World Knights. When his work collides with the agenda of the New World Knights and a personal speaker named Brother Hope, he discovers that he is the descendant of a race of mystical knights called The Mantimaji. After suffering a tragic loss, Elijah trains to become a Mantimaji in order to get revenge.
As he strikes out against Brother Hope, Elijah learns more about his legacy as a Mantimaji and his potential to become a hero and save the world from Brother Hope’s twisted plans. Although he starts off as an entitled person, Elijah Alexander’s love and appreciation for his family causes him to be a great hero in the making. Using a magical ankh that can change into armor and any weapon imaginable, as well as the aid of women warriors known as The Sanctuants, Elijah Alexander comes into his role as a superhero legacy that has protected the world for generations.
BLACK LIGHTNING
One of the first black superheroes to appear in DC Comics, Black Lightning debuted in 1977 by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. With the power of electro-magnetism, he can generate and manipulate electricity using a variety of methods. In addition to working as a solo hero, Black Lightning has been a member of Batman’s group, The Outsiders, as well as a member of the Justice League. He has also been shown to have some serious martial arts skills.
RELATED: Black Lightning: 15 Powers You Didn’t Know He Had
When he isn’t performing acts of superheroism, he is known as Jefferson Pierce and has been an Olympic decathlete and a high school principal, not to mention a father. Black Lightning’s daughters, Jessica and Anissa, have also become heroes themselves. Anissa took the name “Lightning” and became a member of Outsiders like her father, while Jessica became “Thunder” and a member of the Justice League. Last year, it was announced that Black Lightning and his daughters will appear in a new Black Lightning television series currently in development.
THE FALCON
Featured in Marvel Comics, Sam Wilson is the first African American superhero in mainstream comics. Debuting in 1969, he was created by Stan Lee and Gene Golban and introduced in “Captain American” #117. After becoming friends and partners-in-crime(fighting), Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson would eventually come up with the persona The Falcon after the Nazi villain Red Skull fuses Sam with a falcon named Redwing in order to manipulate him.
As The Falcon, Sam Wilson has a physic link with Redwing that can be used to literally get a bird’s eye view of things. He also has a cybernetic uniform designed by Black Panther that allows him to fly, be resistant to small firearms and see things via infrared lenses. While working as The Falcon, he managed to become an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. In his most recent comic book appearance, Sam Wilson became the newest Captain America and leader of the Avengers after an aged Steve Rogers passed the mantle onto him.
BLACK PANTHER
Created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee for Marvel Comics, Black Panther premiered in 1966 and is the first African superhero in American comics. The Black Panther is the title given to the chief of the technologically-advanced African nation of Wakanda. By establishing a connection with the Panther God, the Black Panther gains abilities that include heightened senses and reflexes, enhanced strength, speed, durability and healing. The current Black Panther is T’Challa, who has served not only as king of Wakanda, but also represented the country during times of crisis and peace.
In addition to his superhuman abilities, T’Challa is one of the smartest people in the world, having an advanced degree in physics and technology and great knowledge of Wakanda’s metallic ore vibranium. In certain comics, he has cleverly used the portable supercomputer Kimiko to solve problems and escape sticky situations. Besides being a solo hero, T’Challa has been a member of the Defenders, a temporary member of the Fantastic Four (alongside his former wife Storm), and is currently a member of The Ultimates.
Obviously, we couldn’t fit every black hero on this list, so we want to hear your favorites! Sound off in the comments!

Elise Cooper interviews Stephanie Marie Thornton
And They Called It Camelot by Stephanie Marie Thornton brings to life one of America’s iconic figures, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.  Although much has been written and told, readers who think they know everything about her legacy will find that there are actually new and meaningful true revelations with this intimate portrait.
The former First Lady was glamorous, strong, intelligent, politically savvy, charming, and stylistic.  She was able to adapt to the many difficult situations thrown at her. This legend was full of grace, dignity, with a potent strength to survive.
Although billed as a novel it is more like a memoir, with Jackie telling the readers her thoughts and the events of her life.  There is a glimpse of her upbringing in a broken home with a harsh mother, to becoming a debutante, horsewoman, and journalist. But the real story begins after she met Congressman John F. Kennedy, marries him, and they begin their journey, becoming America’s royalty. By telling the story in Jackie’s voice, readers are able to feel her pain and to celebrate her triumphs. They grieve with her over three of her children’s death, the many painful episodes of JFK’s infidelity, and that bloody day in Dallas when Camelot ended.  But they will also cheer as they see her formidable ways, not shying away from her husband’s philandering, but confronting him head on. The last few years of their marriage they became partners where both recognized their love for each other and how they respected, needed, and depended on one another.
The last part of the book explores the close relationship between Bobby Kennedy and Jackie, how each gained solace and strength from one another as they tried to cope with President Kennedy’s assassination. Then there was the marriage to Aristotle Onassis, mainly to protect her children. The novel ended on a positive note with Jackie Kennedy Onassis just becoming “Jackie,” making a career for herself as an editor. The story concluded in 1977 with the dedication of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
John F. Kennedy wrote a book entitled Profiles In Courage about historical figures, acts of integrity, bravery, and mental toughness. After reading this fictional account by Thornton, it becomes apparent that had Profiles In Courage been written today, Jackie Kennedy would have been included. Throughout her life she showed the most noble of human values and a formidable spirit with incredible strength and resilience.
Elise Cooper:  Why Jackie Kennedy Onassis?
Stephanie Marie Thornton: I knew I wanted to do another famous American of the twentieth century.  Although there were shelves of books, enough to fill a library, there were not any fictionalized accounts.  I also taught history and realized from my generation (I just turned forty) to the current generation they are not aware of what she did.  Jackie lived an incredible and tragic life. I wanted to show how she was more than a pretty face married to an assassinated President.
EC:  Is a lot of the events and thoughts fictionalized?
SMT: I would like to think my version is lightly fictionalized because there was a lot of research I did to make it as authentic as possible.  I tried to put most everything in that was true, but if not, I wrote it in the author’s notes.  It was not necessary to embellish their lives.
EC:  Why write it in the first person?
SMT:  I did it in order to put the reader there and in her thoughts.  I wanted them to be a fly on the wall and see her amazing life through her eyes.  I think it was a more powerful story because people could realize what it was like to be Jackie Kennedy and experience all those events.
EC: Were the nicknames true?
SMT:  Yes, she called JFK bunny, Joe Kennedy Sr. Poppy Doodle, Caroline bunny, and she was called either Jacks, kid, or kiddo.  BTW:  John-John was not a nickname the Kennedys called John Jr. The media heard JFK calling his son, John, and after he did not respond the President said it again.  So, the media dubbed him John-John.
EC:  How would you describe Jackie?
SMT:  Elegant, classy, dignified, and poised.  She was very private.  She was the essence of what a First Lady should be. She has a persona of being a scholar and loner, but also a free-spirit and spontaneous.  Because she played so many different roles, she called on these different aspects.  She exceeded what her predecessors had done by restoring the White House, all her good will trips, even some without the President. I put in a scene during his 1960 campaign for President where she showed her worth by speaking to a New Orleans crowd in French. There were even times she was not politically correct. For example, she and JFK cursed like sailors, but in my book, she only cursed in French.
EC:  How would you describe JFK?
SMT:  There were two book quotes that typified him.  “Jack holds everyone in the palm of his hands,” and “The potency of Jack’s allure, his ability to make you feel as if you were the only person on earth who mattered to him, even if it was only a façade.” He did make people feel like they were the most important people in the room, until he moved on to the next person. He is a war hero, a man of action, who had great ideas including the Peace Corps and going to the moon.  I think he liked to compartmentalize. He was terribly charismatic.
EC:  Yet, he also had affairs?
SMT:  The hardest part of the book was to walk the fine line of why Jackie stayed with him.  She obviously loved him very much, but there were times he was such a dismal husband.  She had two miscarriages and he was not at her bedside.  She did think about divorcing him over his infidelities considering her mother had done it.  Yet, she stayed with him, something I had to grapple with.
EC:  It seems around 1962 the marriage took a more positive turn?
SMT:  I agree.  He was there after Patrick was still born and then there was the Cuban Missile Crisis. They got much closer.  In fact, JFK gave her the same gift he gave all the ex-comm team that handled the Cuban Missile Crisis; although hers was engraved JBK + JFK.  Maybe he realized this woman he married was very impressive.  What was very heartfelt is when he had picked out a Christmas present for Jackie, and she received this beautiful ring after his death.
EC:  Marilyn Monroe was a mess?
SMT:  I will never be a Marilyn Monroe fan.  The way she sang Happy Birthday Mr. President was bad enough.  But then she actually called the White House. She also dressed up in a photo shoot as Jackie, while the First Lady was away on a good will trip.  She kept claiming she was going to marry the President.  I think at this point she was not mentally stable.
EC:  What was Jackie’s relationship with Bobby Kennedy?
SMT:  It was intriguing. Both of them were so broken after the assassination and became incredibly close emotionally. They leaned on each other. He was her anchor, friend, guard, and comforter. She became his advisor and confidant who encouraged him to pursue his ideals even though she had hesitations.
EC:  Jackie was the one to pull the plug on Bobby?
SMT:  Yes.  After he was shot she flew immediately to his bedside and was the one to sign the paperwork to take him off life support.  For me, this was heartbreaking. Of all the Kennedys in that room at that time she was the one who signed the paperwork to let him go.
EC: What was her relationship with Joe Kennedy Sr.?
SMT:  He was a father figure to her. Initially he saw her as someone who could further Jack’s career.  But after JFK had his back surgery he came to appreciate her.  Once she came into her own, she was the Queen of the family.
EC:  Her marriage to Onassis?
SMT:  She knew that people would hate it, but did it anyway.  I am not convinced she would have done it had Bobby not have been assassinated.  I put in a line in the book, “They are playing ten little Indians with the Kennedys and my kids are next.”  Everything she did was for Caroline and John Jr.  She was a great mother.  I think she made her way out of the depression after both assassinations for her children.  Because Onassis was filthy rich and could provide security to keep them safe, I think she was willing to go to the ends of the earth for her children.
EC:  Your next book?
SMT:  It will be out next summer.  Very few people know about Elizabeth Bentley.  She was an American spy and member of the Communist Party who served the Soviet Union during WWII.  In 1945 she defected from the Communist Party and Soviet intelligence and worked with the FBI.
THANK YOU!!

NFL and USAA Announce Finalists for the Salute to Service Award Presented by USAA
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
By SPORT EDITOR FOR SUSTAIN HEALTH
PUBLISHED: 04:22, 20 January 2020 | UPDATED: 05:28, 20 January 2020
The NFL and USAA, an Official NFL Salute to Service Partner, announced Atlanta Falcons CEO STEVE CANNON, Detroit Lions Head Coach MATT PATRICIA, and Los Angeles Chargers Legend DONNIE EDWARDS as finalists for the ninth annual Salute to Service Award presented by USAA.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Cannon, Patricia, and Edwards were selected for their exceptional efforts to honor and support members of the military community. The Salute to Service Award recipient will be recognized at NFL Honors, a two-hour primetime awards special to air nationally on Feb. 1, the eve of Super Bowl LIV, on FOX.
USAA, a leading provider of insurance and other services to U.S. military members, veterans and their families, will contribute $25,000 in the award recipient's honor to the official aid societies representing all five military branches. The NFL will match USAA's donation of $25,000, which will be donated to the award recipient's military charity of choice.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The award recipient will receive a specially designed military challenge coin, recognizing their commitment to the military. In what has become a long-standing tradition, challenge coins are presented to members of the military community to encourage excellence, boost morale or to recognize a fellow brother- or sister-in-arms.
"Each having different life experiences and connections to our military, all three finalists for the 'Salute to Service Award presented by USAA' are connected by a shared belief in honoring and showing appreciation to our nation's service members and veterans," said Vice Admiral (Ret.) JOHN BIRD, USAA Senior Vice President of Military Affairs. "Steve, Coach Patricia, and Donnie are all worthy finalists and we salute them for their continued commitment to America's military community."
The Salute to Service Award is part of the NFL and USAA's year-round commitment to recognize and honor the military community. In October 2019, 32 NFL clubs nominated coaches, active and retired players, and team executives and personnel, who best demonstrated support for the military community. These nominees were publicly announced in November and the submissions were evaluated by a panel of judges, including last year's award recipient, former Atlanta Falcons and current San Francisco 49ers guard BEN GARLAND. Nominees' credentials are evaluated based on the positive effect of the individual's efforts on the military community, the type of service conducted, the thoroughness of the program and level of commitment.
The panel of judges, consisting of representatives from the U.S. military, the NFL and USAA, includes:
VICE ADMIRAL JOHN BIRD (Ret.), U.S. Navy veteran, USAA Senior Vice President of Military Affairs
CHAD HENNINGS, Air Force Academy graduate, three-time Super Bowl champion
BEN GARLAND, San Francisco 49ers guard and 2018 Salute to Service Award recipient
JIM MORA, SR., Marine Corps veteran, former NFL head coach
VINCENT JACKSON, Former NFL player & 2015 Salute to Service Award recipient
LENNY BANDY, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and NFL Vice President of Security
Since 2011, USAA has used its sponsorship to honor and appreciate active-duty military, veterans and their families by creating unique opportunities that bring the military community and the NFL closer together. Among numerous events this season, USAA hosted "NFL Boot Camps" during training camp with multiple teams and at military installations at home and abroad, where military members competed in drills similar to those used at the NFL Combine, Super Bowl ticket giveaways for military veterans and offering military members the chance to meet NFL players in small groups. Fans can join the NFL and USAA in honoring the military community by visiting NFL.com/Salute.

STEVE CANNON (CEO, Atlanta Falcons)
Steve Cannon, CEO of Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank's family of businesses, is the personification of what the NFL's Salute to Service Award was created to honor. His passion and drive to provide America's military community meaningful recognition, unique engagement opportunities and enduring support they may not otherwise have is constant and central to his leadership ethic. Cannon's commitment to the military and related causes began with his own personal commitment. Cannon, who graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, was Airborne Ranger qualified and served as First Lieutenant in West Germany during the fall of the Iron Curtain. During his time in the Army he also served five years as an artillery officer. Through Cannon's countless hours of service to multiple military non-profits over the years, his constant "military first" mindset and utilization of the NFL's platform has provided active duty service members, veterans and military families with first class experiences and support.
In addition to empowering and giving back to the military community, Cannon has played a large role in bringing awareness to the general population on the importance of honoring and recognizing our Nation's Heroes. Through Cannon's military and professional career, he has consistently found ways to implement programs in service to our military, active duty specifically. Upon his entrance into the Atlanta Falcons organization, he realized the impact of the NFL platform and challenged the Club to be "best in class" and to "become the benchmark franchise in all of professional sports" in terms of our military outreach and appreciation. The Atlanta Falcons became the first ever NFL team to conduct their own USO Tour. Another challenge that Cannon put on the team was to make every single Atlanta Falcons home game a "Salute to Service" game; and to not just celebrate our current service members and veterans once in November. Additionally, the Falcons host and honor through video tribute, a family from the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) at every single home game. The Falcons have raised more than $250,000 to help homeless veterans across the state of Georgia.
On January 1, 2014, Cannon's life was changed forever when his brother, also a West Point graduate, took his own life due to post traumatic stress disorder. Cannon, through his heartbreak, also found a light. Seeing what his family was going through, he wanted to make sure that any other family that experiences the unbearable pain of losing a loved one, feels cared for, is nurtured and has opportunities in their time of most need. Cannon serves on the Board of Directors of three organizations whose values are built around providing opportunities for military and their families. Since 2014, he has served on the Board of Directors for Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund and Children of Fallen Patriots; while also serving on the TAPS Board of Directors since 2017. Cannon co-founded the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund in 2014, a nonprofit organization that honors military service and sacrifice by providing scholarships and educational programs to veterans and military family members, especially to children of our nation's fallen or disabled. Since 2014, Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund has helped over 1,500 military children with scholarships totaling $12 million; the Fund will award an additional $4 million+ in scholarships in 2019. A member of the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund Executive Committee and Board of Directors, Cannon has been instrumental in their fundraising efforts. They have raised $20 million since 2014.
Cannon always has the United States military on the forefront of what we do, and their families, and the Atlanta Falcons are honored to have a such a special leader push the organization to excellence and make sure they take care of those who fight for our freedom every day. "There is a debt we owe to those who make the ultimate sacrifice and we will pay that debt by taking care of the families left behind," says Cannon.
MATT PATRICIA (Head Coach, Detroit Lions)
Entering in his 17th season as an NFL coach and third as the head coach of the Lions, Matt Patricia's support of the United States Armed Forces dates back to his days as an aeronautical engineering major at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where his "first love" was airplanes. With several close friends currently serving in the military, specifically the Navy, Patricia grows his beard every season to honor his loved ones overseas – most of whom typically sport full beards. "I'm not shaving until you get back. When you see us on TV, or see me on TV, you'll know I'll be thinking about you," Patricia said during his press conference at Super Bowl LII. In 2018, his first year as head coach, the Lions partnered with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). Through Patricia's work with Lions players on the launch of the team's social justice initiative, Detroit Lions Inspire Change, the Lions became the first NFL team to fund scholarship opportunities for TAPS families.
During the team's Salute to Service game against the Carolina Panthers in 2018, Patricia hosted Michigan-based TAPS families and, alongside several players, honored the families' lost loved ones with personalized buttons and helmet decals on game day. Lions players also conducted a ticket drive that invited hundreds of military members to the Panthers game. This past year, Patricia and the Lions honored 25 TAPS families when Detroit took on the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 17. As part of the last two My Cause My Cleats initiatives, Patricia showcased the Word of Honor Fund, which provides a continuum of support that facilitates milestone events for the surviving children of Navy SEALs and Special Operations personnel who lost their lives while assigned to select Naval Special Operations Groups. Last June, he donated 325 backpacks to the organization's Annual Summertime Gathering in Willow Creek, Idaho. Over the last two years, Patricia and the Lions have hosted and helped fund the Drug Enforcement Agency's Maltz Challenge, an annual worldwide cross-fit event held in memory of DEA Special Agent and United States Airforce Pararescue man Mike Maltz that honors service men and women lost in the line of duty. This past March, more than 150 participants gathered at the team's Allen Park practice facility to compete in the event, where Patricia greeted participants and helped organize a gift presentation to the family of Private First Class Tarryl Hill, a Southfield, Mich. native who died while serving in the Iraq War.
Patricia's commitment to supporting the service men and women of our country is also rooted in a passion for preserving and honoring American history. In June 2018, Patricia led a private trip of the entire team and coaching staff to Arlington National Cemetery, where the team together remembered fallen heroes before embarking on the upcoming season. During this trip, Patricia and the team's player leadership council also visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This past August, while participating in joint training camp practices with the Houston Texans, Patricia also coordinated a team trip to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, NASA's headquarters for human spaceflight training. Lions players and staff were given an exclusive opportunity to hear NASA astronaut and United States Navy SEAL Chris Cassidy present on his distinguished career path, as well as the many parallels between the training regimens of professional football players and astronauts. Throughout the football season, Patricia consistently hosts military friends at both home and road games and also allows them to take part in team meetings and view practice. Over the last two seasons, he has also brought in retired Three-Star United States Navy Admiral John "Boomer" Stufflebeem to speak to the team on topics ranging from media training to culture building. A former Lions punter and close friend of Patricia, Stufflebeem served 39 years in the Navy and is well-known for his role as the primary media liaison for the Pentagon following the attacks of September 11, 2001.
DONNIE EDWARDS (Los Angeles Chargers Legend)
During Donnie Edwards' five seasons with the Chargers, he was twice voted as an All-Pro linebacker and at the time of his retirement, Edwards was one of only eight players in the history of the NFL to record 20 interceptions and 20 sacks over a career. While he was heavily involved with bettering the community and actively supporting the military during his playing days, Edwards continues his efforts currently by taking full advantage of his connections off the field to support the world around him, especially military veterans. It was Edwards' long-standing family ties to the military which moved him to lend his support to our troops overseas, including participating in seven tours with the USO proudly working to help boost morale for members of our military.
"My family has been in the military since my grandpa, who is a Pearl Harbor survivor with the 25th infantry division," Edwards said. "His service and sacrifice to this country has always pushed me to support our military and so I'm a life-long supporter of our military."
Edwards' passion has now taken a very special direction as he has founded the Best Defense Foundation that takes World War II veterans and Vietnam Veterans back to their battlefields and memorials so they can make peace and pay respect to their fallen soldiers who never got a chance to live a full life.
"It's been really rewarding for me. I've been taking back veterans for about 14 years and I've done over 33 programs around the world, from Berchtesgaden, Germany to the beaches of Iwo Jima, and all in-between," said Edwards.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Edwards had a goal to return as many veterans as he could to Normandy. His goal was achieved earlier this offseason, as Edwards and his Best Defense Foundation took 16 veterans and a nurse who served in World War II on a 10-day trip to the shores of northern France.
Edwards has participated in nine USO tours. In February 2019, Edwards along with another NFL Legend went to Japan on an NFL-USO Tour to watch the Super Bowl with the troops in Okinawa. Like Normandy, he took seven Iwo Jima survivors back to the islands earlier this year. He credits the game of football for giving him the platform to do so much for those who served.
His dedication to giving back comes from his family. His grandfather, Sergeant Maximino Razo, was a Pearl Harbor survivor, a father-figure for Edwards growing up. "I do it in his honor and his legacy," he said. "Growing up, he took care of me when I was young, and now I'm taking care of the guys. Our motto is, 'Taking care of the ones who took care of us.'" His desire in his post-football career is to help those who fought for our freedoms on countless battlefields heal their old wounds and say goodbye to long lost friends makes him special.

The Original List: 50 Content Marketing Influencers and Experts to Follow into 2019
Content Marketing World 2018 will be here before you know it. The largest content marketing conference in the world brings together an incredible cornucopia of talent, curiosity, knowledge and aspirations for success. Marketers from all over the world come to Cleveland, Ohio for this event of epic proportions.
Readers of our blog know we have a long history with the conference starting at the beginning with 8 years of speaking and attending plus 6 years of partnering with Content Marketing Institute to develop speaker/influencer content marketing campaigns, aka “conference ebooks”, to help promote the event.
Another tradition that has recently been imitated but hardly duplicated, is something we started several years ago: sort through the 200 or more speakers and publish a ranked list of content marketing experts according to their social influence.
List Methodology: For this list we use the Traackr influencer marketing platform to filter the content marketing experts who are speaking at the current year’s Content Marketing World conference using a number of criteria including the relevance of the individuals to the topic, the degree to which their networks engage, and the size of their networks. Online data is pulled from blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, SlideShare, Flickr and several other platforms.
Of course the topic in question is: “content marketing”. Everyone included on this list is a) a speaker at CMWorld 2018, b) ranked in the top 50 for “content marketing” according to relevance, resonance, reach and audience metrics.
People always thank me for including them in these lists and there’s no thanks to be given other than to the people who worked hard sharing useful content about content marketing to their social channels, in blogs, in videos and online in general.
Thanks goes to ALL of the people who are actively sharing knowledge about content marketing by engaging and helping others with opinions, insights and expertise on the social web. This list is just the beginning of understanding all of the top experts and influencers around the topic of content marketing.
In this year’s list there are many familiar faces and some that are new. I hope you find new and inspiring content marketing experts to follow through the rest of this year and into 2019.

Upon entry, they discover themselves in an ever-changing supernatural world, jeopardized with booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur (John Hennigan, WWE champion John Morrison). Reimagining the classic 80’s adventure movies with a modern comedic advantage, the handmade fantasy world of Dave Made A Maze comes to life with puppetry, stop-motion cartoon, along with on-camera optical illusions.
