Rambling About C# Being Alright
I think C# is an alright language. This is one of the highest distinctions I can give to a language.
Warning: This post is verbose and rambly and probably only good at telling you why someone might like C# and not much else.
~~~
There's something I hate about every other language. Worst, there's things I hate about other languages that I know will never get better. Even worse, some of those things ALSO feel like unforced errors.
With C# there's a few things I dislike or that are missing. C#'s feature set does not obviously excel at anything, but it avoids making any huge misstep in things I care about. Nothing in C# makes me feel like the language designer has personally harmed me.
C# is a very tolerable language.
C# is multi-paradigm.
C# is the Full Middle Malcomist language.
C# will try to not hurt you.
A good way to describe C# is "what if Java sucked less". This, of course, already sounds unappealing to many, but that's alright. I'm not trying to gas it up too much here.
C# has sins, but let's try to put them into some context here and perhaps the reason why I'm posting will become more obvious:
C# didn't try to avoid generics and then implement them in a way that is very limiting (cough Go).
C# doesn't hamstring your ability to have statement lambdas because the language designer dislikes them and also because the language designer decided to have semantic whitespace making statement lambdas harder to deal with (cough Python).
C# doesn't require you to explicitly wrap value types into reference types so you can put value types into collections (cough Java).
C# doesn't ruin your ability to interact with memory efficiently because it forbids you from creating custom value types, ergo everything goes to the heap (cough cough Java, Minecraft).
C# doesn't have insane implicit type coercions that have become the subject of language design comedy (cough JavaScript).
C# doesn't keep privacy accessors as a suggestion and has the developers pinkie swear about it instead of actually enforcing it (cough cough Python).
Plainly put, a lot of the time I find C# to be alright by process of elimination. I'm not trying to shit on your favorite language. Everyone has different things they find tolerable. I have the Buddha nature so I wish for all things to find their tolerable language.
I do also think that C# is notable for being a mainstream language (aka not Haskell) that has a smaller amount of egregious mistakes, quirks and Faustian bargains.
The Typerrrrr
C# is statically typed, but the typing is largely effortless to navigate unlike something like Rust, and the GC gives a greater degree of safety than something like C++.
Of course, the typing being easy to work it also makes it less safe than Rust. But this is an appropriate trade-off for certain kinds of applications, especially considering that C# is memory safe by virtue of running on a VM. Don't come at me, I'm a Rust respecter!!
You know how some people talk about Python being amazing for prototyping? That's how I feel about C#. No matter how much time I would dedicate to Python, C# would still be a more productive language for me. The type system would genuinely make me faster for the vast majority of cases. Of course Python has gradual typing now, so any comparison gets more difficult when you consider that. But what I'm trying to say is that I never understood the idea that doing away entirely with static typing is good for fast iteration.
Also yes, C# can be used as a repl. Leave me alone with your repls. Also, while the debugger is active you can also evaluate arbitrary code within the current scope.
I think that going full dynamic typing is a mistake in almost every situation. The fact that C# doesn't do that already puts it above other languages for me. This stance on typing is controversial, but it's my opinion that is really shouldn't be. And the wind has constantly been blowing towards adding gradual typing to dynamic languages.
The modest typing capabilities C# coupled with OOP and inheritance lets you create pretty awful OOP slop. But that's whatever. At work we use inheritance in very few places where it results in neat code reuse, and then it's just mostly interfaces getting implemented.
C#'s typing and generic system is powerful enough to offer you a plethora of super-ergonomic collection transformation methods via the LINQ library. There's a lot of functional-style programming you can do with that. You know, map, filter, reduce, that stuff?
Even if you make a completely new collection type, if it implements IEnumerable<T> it will benefit from LINQ automatically. Every language these days has something like this, but it's so ridiculously easy to use in C#. Coupled with how C# lets you (1) easily define immutable data types, (2) explicitly control access to struct or class members, (3) do pattern matching, you can end up with code that flows really well.
A Friendly Kitchen Sink
Some people have described C#'s feature set as bloated. It is getting some syntactic diversity which makes it a bit harder to read someone else's code. But it doesn't make C# harder to learn, since it takes roughly the same amount of effort to get to a point where you can be effective in it.
Most of the more specific features can be effortlessly ignored. The ones that can't be effortlessly ignored tend to bring something genuinely useful to the language -- such as tuples and destructuring. Tuples have their own syntax, the syntax is pretty intuitive, but the first time you run into it, you will have to do a bit of learning.
C# has an immense amount of small features meant to make the language more ergonomic. They're too numerous to mention and they just keep getting added.
I'd like to draw attention to some features not because they're the most important but rather because it feels like they communicate the "personality" of C#. Not sure what level of detail was appropriate, so feel free to skim.
Stricter Null Handling. If you think not having to explicitly deal with null is the billion dollar mistake, then C# tries to fix a bit of the problem by allowing you to enable a strict context where you have to explicitly tell it that something can be null, otherwise it will assume that the possibility of a reference type being null is an error. It's a bit more complicated than that, but it definitely helps with safety around nullability.
Default Interface Implementation. A problem in C# which drives usage of inheritance is that with just interfaces there is no way to reuse code outside of passing function pointers. A lot of people don't get this and think that inheritance is just used because other people are stupid or something. If you have a couple of methods that would be implemented exactly the same for classes 1 through 99, but somewhat differently for classes 100 through 110, then without inheritance you're fucked. A much better way would be Rust's trait system, but for that to work you need really powerful generics, so it's too different of a path for C# to trod it. Instead what C# did was make it so that you can write an implementation for methods declared in an interface, as long as that implementation only uses members defined in the interface (this makes sense, why would it have access to anything else?). So now you can have a default implementation for the 1 through 99 case and save some of your sanity. Of course, it's not a panacea, if the implementation of the method requires access to the internal state of the 1 through 99 case, default interface implementation won't save you. But it can still make it easier via some techniques I won't get into. The important part is that default interface implementation allows code reuse and reduces reasons to use inheritance.
Performance Optimization. C# has a plethora of features regarding that. Most of which will never be encountered by the average programmer. Examples: (1) stackalloc - forcibly allocate reference types to the stack if you know they won't outlive the current scope. (2) Specialized APIs for avoiding memory allocations in happy paths. (3) Lazy initialization APIs. (4) APIs for dealing with memory more directly that allow high performance when interoping with C/C++ while still keeping a degree of safety.
Fine Control Over Async Runtime. C# lets you write your own... async builder and scheduler? It's a bit esoteric and hard to describe. But basically all the functionality of async/await that does magic under the hood? You can override that magic to do some very specific things that you'll rarely need. Unity3D takes advantage of this in order to allow async/await to work on WASM even though it is a single-threaded environment. It implements a cooperative scheduler so the program doesn't immediately freeze the moment you do await in a single-threaded environment. Most people don't know this capability exists and it doesn't affect them.
Tremendous Amount Of Synchronization Primitives and API. This ones does actually make multithreaded code harder to deal with, but basically C# erred a lot in favor of having many different ways to do multithreading because they wanted to suit different usecases. Most people just deal with idiomatic async/await code, but a very small minority of C# coders deal with locks, atomics, semaphores, mutex, monitors, interlocked, spin waiting etc. They knew they couldn't make this shit safe, so they tried to at least let you have ready-made options for your specific use case, even if it causes some balkanization.
Shortly Begging For Tagged Unions
What I miss from C# is more powerful generic bounds/constraints and tagged unions (or sum types or discriminated unions or type unions or any of the other 5 names this concept has).
The generic constraints you can use in C# are anemic and combined with the lack of tagged unions this is rather painful at times.
I remember seeing Microsoft devs saying they don't see enough of a usecase for tagged unions. I've at times wanted to strangle certain people. These two facts are related to one another.
My stance is that if you think your language doesn't need or benefit from tagged unions, either your language is very weird, or, more likely you're out of your goddamn mind. You are making me do really stupid things every time I need to represent a structure that can EITHER have a value of type A or a value of type B.
But I think C# will eventually get tagged unions. There's a proposal for it here. I would be overjoyed if it got implemented. It seems like it's been getting traction.
Also there was an entire section on unchecked exceptions that I removed because it wasn't interesting enough. Yes, C# could probably have checked exceptions and it didn't and it's a mistake. But ultimately it doesn't seem to have caused any make-or-break in a comparison with Java, which has them. They'd all be better off with returning an Error<T>. Short story is that the consequences of unchecked exceptions have been highly tolerable in practice.
Ecosystem State & FOSSness
C# is better than ever and the tooling ecosystem is better than ever. This is true of almost every language, but I think C# receives a rather high amount of improvements per version. Additionally the FOSS story is at its peak.
Roslyn, the bedrock of the toolchain, the compiler and analysis provider, is under MIT license. The fact that it does analysis as well is important, because this means you can use the wealth of Roslyn analyzers to do linting.
If your FOSS tooling lets you compile but you don't get any checking as you type, then your development experience is wildly substandard.
A lot of stupid crap with cross-platform compilation that used to be confusing or difficult is now rather easy to deal with. It's basically as easy as (1) use NET Core, (2) tell dotnet to build for Linux. These steps take no extra effort and the first step is the default way to write C# these days.
Dotnet is part of the SDK and contains functionality to create NET Core projects and to use other tools to build said projects. Dotnet is published under MIT, because the whole SDK and runtime are published under MIT.
Yes, the debugger situation is still bad -- there's no FOSS option for it, but this is more because nobody cares enough to go and solve it. Jetbrains proved anyone can do it if they have enough development time, since they wrote a debugger from scratch for their proprietary C# IDE Rider.
Where C# falls flat on its face is the "userspace" ecosystem. Plainly put, because C# is a Microsoft product, people with FOSS inclinations have steered clear of it to such a degree that the packages you have available are not even 10% of what packages a Python user has available, for example. People with FOSS inclinations are generally the people who write packages for your language!!
I guess if you really really hate leftpad, you might think this is a small bonus though.
Where-in I talk about Cross-Platform
The biggest thing the ecosystem has been lacking for me is a package, preferably FOSS, for developing cross-platform applications. Even if it's just cross-platform desktop applications.
Like yes, you can build C# to many platforms, no sweat. The same way you can build Rust to many platforms, some sweat. But if you can't show a good GUI on Linux, then it's not practically-speaking cross-platform for that purpose.
Microsoft has repeatedly done GUI stuff that, predictably, only works on Windows. And yes, Linux desktop is like 4%, but that 4% contains >50% of the people who create packages for your language's ecosystem, almost the exact point I made earlier. If a developer runs Linux and they can't have their app run on Linux, they are not going to touch your language with a ten foot pole for that purpose. I think this largely explains why C#'s ecosystem feels stunted.
The thing is, I'm not actually sure how bad or good the situation is, since most people just don't even try using C# for this usecase. There's a general... ecosystem malaise where few care to use the language for this, chiefly because of the tone that Microsoft set a decade ago. It's sad.
HOWEVER.
Avalonia, A New Hope?
Today we have Avalonia. Avalonia is an open-source framework that lets you build cross-platform applications in C#. It's MIT licensed. It will work on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and also somehow in the browser. It seems to this by actually drawing pixels via SkiaSharp (or optionally Direct2D on Windows).
They make money by offering migration services from WPF app to Avalonia. Plus general support.
I can't say how good Avalonia is yet. I've researched a bit and it's not obviously bad, which is distinct from being good. But if it's actually good, this would be a holy grail for the ecosystem:
You could use a statically typed language that is productive for this type of software development to create cross-platform applications that have higher performance than the Electron slop. That's valuable!
This possibility warrants a much higher level of enthusiasm than I've seen, especially within the ecosystem itself. This is an ecosystem that was, for a while, entirely landlocked, only able to make Windows desktop applications.
I cannot overstate how important it is for a language's ecosystem to have a package like this and have it be good. Rust is still missing a good option. Gnome is unpleasant to use and buggy. Falling back to using Electron while writing Rust just seems like a bad joke. A lot of the Rust crates that are neither Electron nor Gnome tend to be really really undercooked.
And now I've actually talked myself into checking out Avalonia... I mean after writing all of that I feel like a charlatan for not having investigated it already.
watching last week's and this week's episodes back to back was an absolute roller coaster of emotion and I have a lot of mixed feelings about all the changes they're making this season and how they're choosing to compress the campaign beats
incorporating zerxus was really interesting, although I'm assuming it's to set the stage for some things in c3 (which I am very behind on) rather than because it's going to pay off in tlovm so it feels a little bit gratuitous, but I enjoyed it
and it was a nice way to set up the vorugal vs demon fight although I did deeply miss it being VM's plan, because that was exactly sort of high-risk and insane idea that somehow pays off that makes D&D so fun and would have been nice to see on stream
also sad we lost the "where's larkin?" and raishan's more active involvement in helping them take down the conclave
and deeply sad there was no senokir
or kynan! give me my boy!
I'm really fascinated to see where they take this storyline with pike and whatever's going on with her blood, but I am .... not sure about her seemingly doubting/giving up her faith in the everlight? especially after her whole arc in s1 of rediscovering her faith and how to be faithful in a way that's true to herself. she's the chosen of the everlight! and sarenrae helped them out A LOT on stream!
SARENRAE PUNCHED A FUCKING DRAGON FOR THEM AND THEY ROBBED ME OF IT
the hatching of thordak's eggs and the attack on whitestone was a nice way to up the stakes and give percy a more urgent reason to go after ripley on glintshore
very mixed feelings on how glintshore was handled overall though - so much of the impact of that fight was everyone being there and witnessing percy's death but being unable to stop it
and I'm not sure I like percy dying because he offered anna mercy as opposed to his being determined not to let her go because he knows she's a threat that needs to be stopped
and while I assume we'll still get another confrontation with ripley, the party take-down of her was just. so good on stream because of the raw grief over percy's death, I don't see how a second fight with her can replicate that.
also, tbh, really didn't need the sad ripley backstory - I appreciate the subversion of her character but these are twenty-five minute episodes that are already struggling to contain everything and I'd rather the time taken for that flashback had been given to the relationships within VM and they'd just had ripley briefly namedrop the cerberus assembly if they wanted an easter egg for the mighty nein
my biggest criticism of this season is the fact that all the character beats are happening solely between the romantic pairings and we're missing so much of the dynamics between everyone else in VM
and I've got very mixed feelings on the change ups with the perc'ahlia romance in particular; while I love any interaction between them in isolation, I'm really not a fan overall of how they've switched up their narrative
they were the slowest of slowburns on the stream, and both of them kept their distance because neither of them believed the other one could love them; we're basically being given the total opposite here and while I still love them it just doesn't hit as hard
and I assume they're lining up all the resurrections to do at once because they think having multiple ones will cheapen them? buuuut I feel like we're going to lose the individual impact by doing it altogether
and I really hate that it means percy wasn't there for the final showdown with thordak
also kash better fucking be resurrected because if they perma-kill him I will never forgive them, how dare they do my boy like that
this all feels like a lot of criticism and I am still overall very much enjoying the show so GOOD THINGS:
the fight scenes are all beautifully done and so dynamic to watch
raishan. everything about her. I loved her on stream, love her in this, cree summers voice is perfect.
PIKE TRICKFOOT IS A MOTHERFUCKIN' MONSTAH
love love love that they're giving her so many badass moments to shine
vax's takedown of thordak was brilliant
the animation is beautiful, and the cinematography is gorgeous
music is a+, as always
loved suddenly hyper-competent grog coming up with the plan
percy and cass's perfect sibling dynamic
leader vex! leader vex!
I am very interested to see what they do with the final three episodes - taking down raishan and the resurrections presumably, possibly also taking down ripley (although they might leave her for s4?) and the bard's lament, maybe even a taryon appearance, and then a set up or tease for s4.
#tlovm#tlovm spoilers#the legend of vox machina#these are very unpolished first thoughts just getting them all out#I think some of how I feel will be determined by how the last episodes go#overall I'm enjoying it but not as much as the previous seasons I think
Can we talk about the dragons some more?
I will be. Forever.
Many have already noted the care and detail that went into the design of each dragon, and I love watching the fall of Emon over and over to see new details each time.
But we also see so much of their personalities in this scene, and I love it so much?
Thordak is there to establish dominance, show his power, and accept worshipers, like a true red. He focuses on property damage (yes, people die, too, but that will happen when you nuke a mountain!) and showing off, because he wants lots of the ants in the city to survive. He needs their terrified adoration. We stan all of his "Is this your king?" speeches as he claims his throne.
Umbrasyl is doing what they've been told to do. As the least powerful of the remaining Conclave members, they are raining death from above but not overdoing it. Thordak has no domain and subjects if they melt it all. Bonus content fight between Umbrasyl and KimAllura. (P.S. they're not dead, guys!) I have a big soft spot for Umbrasyl, and I'm curious how much we will get to see the dynamic between the dragons as the story moves forward. They barely get along, and I hope we get to see them interacting with each other more. Something went down between them after Umbrasyl took over Gatshadow, and I want to know what it is that left the black dragon alone and stranded out there with busted palantiri.
Vorugal, it's been mentioned, we don't see a lot of in the fall of Emon. But that's exactly as it should be. Think about it: Vorugal is an elite hunter. They live a solitary life, always seeking more challenging prey to indulge in their favourite pastime. What is the point of destroying a city of helpless ants to Vorugal? So they go for the most challenging targets first, i.e. Allura. I'm disappointed that we didn't get the iconic shot of Vorugal perched on the side of her tower before they destroy it, but at least Vorugal still destroyed it in this version. Then it's almost like they're searching the city for worthy prey, doing the bare minimum to satisfy Thordak's orders. Of course Vorugal tracks them to Greyskull Keep. VM are worthy targets for the white dragon. I'm sad we didn't get to see Vorugal wrestle Thordak for dominance there. That was such a fantastic scene in campaign. Hopefully we'll get to see the two of them butting heads in a different way later on.
And Raishan, clever little pixie. She's just having fun with it. You see her casually flying around the city, blowing smoke here and there before she eats Scanlan's biggest fan. But she knows what she's doing. She killed Uriel with her first attack, and after that she's pretty much like a cat. What can I do that will satisfy Thordak's command but is the most amusing to me? Playing with VM, for one. She makes sure they know who she is, and that she knows who they are. After that, she's going to do what a green dragon does: be sneaky and infiltrate their keep even before they flee to Whitestone. She was a lot more subtle about it in campaign than she is about it here, but we want new viewers to feel like they've spotted something hidden, too (LARKIN WATCH!). Good job. Raishan was the first to give her name during the attack in the campaign, and of course she gave it to us here in the fall of Emon as well. We stan a queen. You'd better put some respect on her name.
Really looking forward to seeing more of her--and all the dragons--this season. Even if they just do cut-aways to their territory or Pike has dream sequences to show what's going on with them, I'll take it. We deserve more than just their death scenes. They are legendary villains and deserve as much love as the Briarwoods.
Aaaaah, I love stuff like this, thank you!
Tagged by: @copperarsenite
Tagging: @feeisamarshmallow @allonsymiddleearth @iceberg-hootenanny (and basically anyone who wants to, honestly)
rules: post the first lines of up to 10 of your last fics/chapters posted on ao3 or your wips and try to draw some conclusions.
I'm going with fics in general, not chapters (because otherwise it would be entirely Satisfaction), and probably sticking to VM fic because all the Tolkien stuff I've posted recently has been crossposting. So last five posted and last five WIPs worked on. :)
(Also, warning that the second-last sentence has a racial slur (used by a character.))
Satisfaction
Veronica’s dad was the sheriff, so she was usually pretty scrupulous about not breaking the law.
Flipping the Script
All Jade wanted was to get her mother’s car and drop it off with enough time to get to the library before it closed, and since the library was open late on Thursdays and she’d stopped to pick it up at 4 PM, it hadn’t seemed that difficult.
Unexpected Dividends
It was probably weird to run a to-do list for your boss in your head, but Eli had been doing it since his second month on the job, because Fred was competent, and reasonably organized, and obviously he was a hell of a mechanic, but his ability to prioritize was a little bit whacked out.
The Most Important Part
“Hot date?”
The Art of Starting Over
It turned out that calling your sort-of boyfriend after a whole week and a half of radio silence was daunting.
Choices (upcoming post S4 oneshot)
Jade grew up in San Diego.
Hunger Games AU for 'X universes Veronica didn't grow up in'
I didn’t sleep well, the night before the Reaping.
untitled WIP (zombie non-AU, post-S4)
Veronica made it home for the end of the world.
Carmen for 'Would've, Could've, Should've' (pending oneshot series)
Yesterday, Carter Phelps shoved Carmen into the stair railing and called her a wetback, like her parents swam all the way here from Venezuela.
Circle of Magic AU for 'X universes Veronica didn't grow up in'
The first time the Guard caught Weevil breaking into a rich man’s house, they tattooed an X on the web of skin between his thumb and first finger and threw him into a cell for the night.
*
So for the obvious – I favour third person (which I knew), and I’m a bit heavier on female POVs than I anticipated (which I’m pleased with, actually). Also very Jade-heavy, and since I’m already 50% of the Jade/Eli tag on AO3, that doesn’t exactly shock me.
(It’s not immediately obvious for all of them, but every single one of these is Weevil-heavy, which is the most unshocking thing possible. I think I have exactly one VM fic in progress where he’s not central to the entire premise, and even there he’s still majorly present.)
Other than that, the closest thing to a trend that I can pick up is that apparently I like opening sentences that feel either dynamic or relatable? Satisfaction and the post-canon zombie fic both have the more classic hook of raising questions about what’s going on, and most of the JEC fics as well as Carmen’s WCS entry are an attempt to jump you right into the characters’ heads or at least their social reality. Whereas the fusion AUs seem to establish their crossover-fandom immediately (THG with an immediate reference to a well known part of that universe, and COM by heavily echoing Briar’s introductory sentence). I don’t know if I did it on purpose, but I like it, so I’ll have to see how much/if that holds true for the other ones in the series. (The BTVS and Animorphs ones are harder, because they involve discovering something, but the summary of the latter will definitely start with My name is Veronica…, and the 1-800-WHERE-R-U one starts with a direct shout-out.)
Anyway! I’d be interested to know if there’s anything that strikes you. :)
#tag meme#revenge gambit fic#fanfic#my own work#jade navarro#veronica mars#i've posted so much satisfaction-related stuff lately i'm very happy#i am sad i couldn't work in the hector installment of wcs though#i have so much of it (partially) written but i'm still not positive what comes first unfortunately#which makes first lines hard to pin down#the pull line is great though:#'The month Weevil gets engaged; Hector lays his bike down on the highway.'
I love this moment, not only for the Taekook but also because it also highlights one of my favourite, underrated relationships between V and Namjoon.
Looking at this, you wouldn't think there was only a year or so age difference between them. There's also not that much difference between them in terms of height and build yet look how young and small Taehyung looks sat next to Namjoon and this really spotlights what Namjoon meant when he said he took care of Taehyung in particular.
This also, inadvertently, reinforces my belief in Taekook. Because look how close Taehyung and Namjoon are at some points. Taehyung is leaning into him in parts and they are shoulder to shoulder touching in parts yet there's still a certain level of deference from Taehyung to Namjoon. There's a natural inequality between them, from Namjoon viewing Tae as someone smaller, more vulnerable who he feels a need to protect and Taehyung happily leaning into that role.
They are physically close, clearly very comfortable in each other's personal space yet there is still very much a sense of boundary and respect for that space that couples tend to drop as they become more intrusive of each others personal space. Taehyung and Jungkook have no respect for each others personal space and they show no discomfort over that fact either. This supports, to me, a opinion that they are much more used to being in such close proximity to each other that it's become second nature for them to consider the space between them shared (and this is something that is not platonic in nature. I think the only platonic relationship you could apply this to is twins)
Even with Vm!n, as touchy and physically comfortable as they are in each other's spaces, there's still a sense that it's their own individual space; that there's a conscious acknowledgement when the other crosses the boundary and enters their space, even if it's clear that they generally don't have a problem with it or feel uncomfortable with it. Jimin is probably the only other member who so effortlessly intrudes upon Taehyung's personal space the same way Jungkook does and vice versa but even then, there's a line. That's because couples know each other intimately and physically in a way that even best friends or platonic soulmates don't.
And for the j!kookers because I know you like to lurk here, there are far more moments of JK asserting his boundaries with Jimin than he ever does with Taehyung. Yes, Jimin likes to PLAYFULLY toe the line of those boundaries, which I think is what might be confusing you all, but you can also see those moments when Jimin recognises the line and pulls back. You can also see how much more comfortable JK is initiating those interactions than he is receiving them. Their touchiness is cute but it's still lacking the give and take that occurs naturally in romantic relationships. That's because those interactions between them are far more intentional than unintentional.
You also see this at play with Namjoon and Jimin too. They get really close but that closeness is much more conscious than what is happening between Taehyung and Jungkook.
I often say that the greatest tell is always the group themselves because out of all the different and similar dynamics, Jungkook and Taehyung's sticks out like a sore thumb. The group and their close relationships with each other give us a perfect reference and comparison point to see how certain things don't quite line up with others and the interactions between Taehyung and Jungkook just don't line up with the rest of the group. They just don't. We have two strong, close age relationships to run the side by sides in Vm!n and J!kook (I'm only censoring not to bring unwanted eyes to your page, btw, not because I have a problem with either ship itself) we know how Taehyung and Jungkook act around their best and closest friends and yet, it's different between them.
And I know part of the media play is that they're not close or they're distant yet that can't be the reason for their different dynamic because one of the things that sticks out about them most is how much they come across as physically inseparable compared to the rest of the group.
Now, I don't know about some of their detractors but I know that when I feel distant or not close to people, those feelings show physically. I feel driven to get away from them and put physical distance between us---not to get closer to them.
There's been a lot of discourse lately about how Taekook is singled out and almost treated as a taboo compared to other ships and I do think that's true but I think that's because we naturally recognise body language and we pick up on signals instinctively and I think people are picking up on those differences, they're drawing those comparisons and they're seeing what does and doesn't line up and what they are finding--either consciously or subconsciously is making them feel uncomfortable.
Nobody can know for sure. They could all be master manipulators and Oscar caliber actors for all we know but I think there is far much support in what we do know that points to Taekook as a possible couple.
Hi anon!
Beautifully laid out! Absolutely agree!
Tae and Jk are so used to being close and touchy that there’s moments where they (mostly Jk, since Tae is the most tactile) don’t even react to the other touching them. It’s normal, it’s familiar, it’s automatic, it’s a level of comfort they don’t have with others.
Things I love about VM: Post Skates
2. Scott always leads Tessa back to centre ice for their bows.
No matter the program, how it went, who’s having a bad day, who’s more excited. He always leads her back, and she always lets him lead her back.
This might be kinda hard to notice when comparing to other teams, I tried to watch a bunch and depending how they finish it may not be obvious. The examples I’ll post here are instances where I feel it’s at least a bit clear it’s the female partner taking the initiative to do this.. which I just don’t personally love- I like it when the men are leading the ladies the whole time on the ice. The first gif is the one that came to mind first when I was looking to compare this, and depending on how you view a lot of this whole thing, maybe depends on the dynamic of personalities between skaters. Like fair if you want to say ‘that’s just their personalities’, which is fine if you like that, but as partners there is a reason and.. occupational structure that I notice some teams missing in various instances/moments of a performance. Here some random examples just as a visual to compare to VM:
(As always this is not a knock to any specific teams, it’s just to show a visual difference to VM).
It is clear with the first and last examples, these teams the lady is the more dominant/bigger personality, the other examples I feel like the dynamic varies/isn’t so obvious, and again while the movement is minimal, in comparing to TS you can see how all these gifs show the female with the initiative/leading that moment of their performance (examining this regardless whether the man was leading in their actual program). What I’m saying is I don’t think it’s necessarily a personality thing in all instances, I don’t even think it’s a conscious thing, but I think it shows a lack of unity and leadership structure and as I said I personally like when the man is leading, so as with everything comparing to TS- are just so much better and more believable because it’s so real and honest- those roles are never confused.
So really it’s not so much in the physical action of it, in fact I almost wouldn’t say it’s the man taking the lady back, but you’ll maybe see more obviously with TS, just through their energy together, she will wait for him to lead her back, just though the presence she has, she maintains her role as the partner being lead even as the program has finished.
I don’t want this to get confused with specific programs (say Carmen where she is most certainly the more dominate character). It’s not program specific. It’s exactly what is said in the commentary here, it is a work of fine art how Tessa follows Scott, and he is always leading her- never looks as though he has a problem. Even when they aren’t dancing. She’s not waiting for him to actually say ‘come on’ and grab her and drag her back to centre, but she just doesn’t initiate anything, she’s allowing him to make all the decisions and she does what she is ‘told’ (wordlessly instructed to do and as they have done a thousand times) because those are their roles in their partnership, and they do them so incredibly well- it is an art, because it’s not overtly obvious and you don’t see it.. you kind of only feel it, it’s that trust she has in him- you feel that she’s always being taken care of. When you watch the very earliest footage of them, the difference is obvious that she is clearly leading, but just a few years later really in juniors that dynamic has completely shifted and it is him leading her. That takes so much trust for Tessa to relinquish that role, and Scott so much responsibility to be the leader for them both. Once they learned that, that dynamic never wavered in any instance of them on the ice- competitive or show performance.
Even in instances where Scott didn’t have his best skate and T in her very quiet and beautiful way is everything he needs her to be to make him feel safe and cared for in a moment where he is so mad at himself, their roles on the ice when it comes to leading and following never changes despite what happened in the program.
When they say they are both team leaders and they have two ‘Cs’ on their jackets (C for captain), Tessa is just as much the captain that Scott is on the ice even though he is ‘leading’ her. They are both in charge of their respective roles and must contribute equally to the team for them to be successful. And what each other does in their roles allows the other to do theirs- them being their very best for each other makes them the best overall.
As with a lot of things I talk about this may seem small and unimportant but when you put it all together with their skating, dancing, athleticism performance, and they carry that authenticity and leadership structure right through till they are off the ice, it completes the full package, makes you believe them and not take your eyes off them because you are so entranced in their partnership. That’s the point I want to try and get across in this series.. it’s everything- not just the skating.
taking into account his desire to ensure the de rolos will always be around for whitestone, if percy and vex hadn’t gotten back together after their break up do you think percy would marry another in order to continue the de rolo bloodline? Or do you think he’d shirk that responsibility and wait for his sister to marry? He’d be really depressed I know that but do you think he’d wallow and waste away if getting her back didn’t work or marry another noble for his kingdom? (hi! I love your fics!😁)
Hi anon - thank you! <33
See, on my end, I think the most fascinating question would be ‘how this would fuck with Vox Machina’s dynamic’, because with Vex as one of the two ‘leaders’ of the group with Scanlan, that could get very messy very fast. Especially with how her titles kinda tie her to Whitestone. Awkward.
I’m going to assume that this breakup is the canon ‘broke up for one week during the timeskip’ that happened, and not the ‘Percy left VM and broke up with Vex at the same time’ of One for sorrow, Two for joy, just based on the phrasing. If you’d like me to do a what-if for the fic, though, I’d be more than happy to!
I think the timing is really important, here, and the fact it’s a breakup. See, I’m of a sliiightly different opinion to @essayofthoughts on this: I think Percy would take two steps back if things ended with Vex and things were beyond reconciliation, or if they were incompatible. For multiple reasons.
Keeping this under a cut because it got Longgg
First of all, given this is the timeskip, Percy has *finally* started taking responsibility for Whitestone… but he does tend to procrastinate on this sort of thing. In the epilogue he explicitly, one of the first things out of his mouth, hopes he and Vex will keep adventuring for a bit before settling down - Vesper being born within a year post-Vecna was an accident. He wouldn’t be in a rush to marry and pop out heirs.
I highly doubt he would pressure Cass to marry, but I think he’d definitely lock himself in his workshop and cross his fingers hoping she finds someone before people start mumbling in concern.
Tackling the emotional side to this… Things took a *while* with Vex: they flirted from the word go (or, she flirted with him), but didn’t get together until Percy had literally died and Vex confessed to loving him in the hopes of getting him back. They fell for eachother through some ridiculously traumatic events (battles, near-death, death, revisiting huge sources of trauma, etc.), on top of being in close proximity to eachother (camping as a group, then the Mansion, and Whitestone too) for several years. You don’t get that sort of cocktail off of courtly dramas, y’know. Finding a similar sort of relationship - with an equal on the battlefield, in the mind, in the social dance - would be ludicrously hard, especially without that combination of time, adrenaline and proximity.
The final piece of ‘what’s going on in Maggie’s head for her to say such evil things’ is that Percy was firmly convinced he was damned. He knowingly produced weapons that would kill thousands, and wanted to atone for that, but it takes *work* for him to believe that he even can be redeemed, or is a good person. Him and Vex breaking up would shatter that budding kindness towards himself, potentially beyond the point of no return: he came back from the dead for her, she’d seen him at his very worst, and she can’t love him. Maybe he isn’t worthy of love, after all he’s done. Or maybe he’s a terrible person who can be loved but will inevitably ruin it, like he ruined their relationship (TBH I’m pretty sure the breakup would have been caused by issues on both sides, buuuut this is Percy).
So. Sum total: I think Percy would set himself up for failure, consciously or not.
He isn’t exactly around anyone beyond his sister, dignitaries and castle staff all that much, and that pales in comparison to that adrenaline/time/proximity thing with VM I mentioned. He's throwing himself into tinkering, and maybe still adventuring with Vox Machina when he can, and just being helpful to Whitestone but not really *looking* for anyone, you know? So when he doesn’t fall in love again, well. He considers it proof of his inner voice’s worst hypotheses about himself. He would dedicate his life not to happiness, because he doesn’t deserve a lick of it, but to fixing his legacy, to trying to make things right, somehow. And if Cass doesn’t marry, and Whitestone needs an heir… well. An unhappy marriage is the least he deserves, after everything. Gods forbid he has to see Vex still being incredible with the Grey Hunt during all this, too, man's gonna pine and mope and be sad (until he can be absolutely delighted with the kid and throw all his attention into being a dad).
(And, a sidenote - Vex, if still in Whitestone, would still be the most eligible match! Just saying! And they’d hopefully still be friends - picture her seeing the pressure the Chamber is putting on Percy and Cass, and offering to marry Percy to save her friends that. And it being Awkward. And lush with Pining. And it’s supposed to just be a political thing, and Vex would like to be a mother anyways and hahaha isn’t this just like those ‘if we’re both still single at 35 we get married’ things, but what if Feelings Return, huh, what then? Middle! Aged! PINING! Friends to lovers to exes to friends to married with a baby on the way to lovers!)
#critical role#campaign 1#ask#vox machina#percival de rolo#vex'ahlia#dont wanna tag this percahlia bc i know id be sad to stumble on something like this in the tag :c
this RD today-
Pate and Bye were the cleanest and the performance closest to their intention, so credit to them. it felt like watching two different kinds of ice dance at this event, though -- PB take many small short steps and strokes to build speed and kind of stitch together everything that happens between elements. you never see a long glide. they're capable of it, because in the warmup they speed around the rink in long strokes, but not in the program. so because of that, they don't cover much ice with each stroke. they're good at disguising it, but if you watch what they're drawing on the ice, it's very choppy and serpentine - they never ride an edge for more than 2 beats at a time on one foot. and i think in the long run, you're never going to be as beautiful as teams with glide and deep edges. the flow and the range to portray different speeds and characters of music isn't there if you don't glide.
i watched it again, and it's kind of making me mad lol on a blade level, they're practically walking on the ice. on a screen you can get fooled by the choppy steps thing because the tempo of the steps is faster-- you see the feet moving a lot, and that can look like more energy, but it doesn't necessarily translate -
Olivia and Tim cover far more ice than anyone else here - it’s big skating and really exciting at times to watch. the late part of the program feels a bit empty, but on a skating level, it’s so dynamic, and she's so good. talk about drawing big lobes on the ice with her blades. she does look like she's leading him at times and like he's working to keep up with her. but mostly he is
IAMO teams have glide and cover more ice in long strokes but i think it takes time to develop the ability to do everything this way with speed and precision - Alyssa and Jacob have grown so much in the last year, but they can be a bit slower overall than some of the other teams, and it felt like the panel was pretty harsh on them. but watch the beginning of their program - they're making these arcs on the ice and not using a ton of crossovers or little pushy steps to do it, and when the music changes energy, they're musical - they're responding to it. i think that's why some of the silly dance moves (flexing their biceps, kissing them) don't bother me, though maybe the judges didn't love it. same for Leia and Pietro - the new MSS shirts that say "ride the glide" reflect what that school teaches, i think. VM and HD certainly skated that way. a number of the IAM teams here skate more like this too
i like Lopareva/Brissaud's RD a lot. i love this music - i didn't know Mylene Farmer before. Evgenia lost balance in that knee slide and touched a hand down, which she didn't do in practice this morning, and that didn't get called a fall, and their twizzles also didn't get docked in GOE much despite his bobble. (this event had soo many twizzle errors)
Wolfkostin/Tsarevskiy are doing so well for being brand new - i'm happy for her. was thinking about that Florence+the Machine FD she had last year and how it never got near potential and how uncomfortable she and Jeffrey looked all season- there really is such a thing as chemistry
coaches wrangle jackets, skate guards, water bottles, and tissue boxes for the skaters - every coach no matter who does this - but i'd never sat behind them to see that after the skaters blow their noses, they ball up the tissue and leave them on the boards in front of their coach😅 i keep getting distracted watching the skating and miss whether the coaches actually have to dispose of those too lol imagine leaving your snotty tissue for Marie-France Dubreuil to clean up
LOVE when the girls (Batman and Superman) start to tussle. Like yes, the Bruce/Clark friends dynamic is cute and fun and they're totally a power couple, but the tension when they disagree is so good. Anyway some other commentary no one asked for: 1. Superman TAS should not have ended like that lol. We never even got to see Lois figure out who Clark was, never got to even see them together. The episodes were fine, but the show had at least another season in it. 2. The music in Justice League (animated) is so bland, I don't think it's live. I do appreciate when they play character themes though :) 3. JL S2 definitely improved over S1. The stories are more interesting, the writing is snappier, overall more fun. 4. In love w Shayera. Like actually. Like to the point where I would even get back into comics just to read her stuff fr.
The apology from Keyleth to Laudna in c3e81!!! "For... everything." I mean that's not particularly specific, but 1. it certainly sounded like it carried the weight of the Sun Tree and 2. if anyone out of VM was going to apologize for what happened to Laudna even if it technically wasn't quite their fault it was going to be Keyleth for sure. I don't know if she'd gotten a heartfelt apology from any of them before that. (Of course, this could just be me being hopeful. Keyleth/Matt totally could've not been insinuating that at all and I was just reading into things too deeply. I don't watch Talks Machina so I guess I'll never know for sure lol.)
Found a steampunk playlist on spotify and it's really just driving orchestral in peculiar time signatures, sometimes with the classic Hans Zimmer flair, but I do kind of adore it. Makes me feel very powerful. It's been several years since I was into the "epic"/"scorecore" genre and I'm enjoying it!
Really only a week left of break (how???). Still a few things I want to get done, but I've made decent progress on the goals.
Today I'm thankful that, on clear nights, I can see stars from my bedroom window. Not many of them (light pollution probably), but I can pick out Orion :) A bonus feature, along with the sunset views, I lucked into here which I've never had before.
Re:Dressing Up to Walk About -- sometimes it's more important to just get out and walk, and if putting a coat over some house clothes and a scarf around an unwashed face is the answer then so be it. Beats spending a full day inside a single room by a mile. [edit, next day: upvote, just got caught in a cute little snow flurry!]
Last thing: halfway through The Winter King. I still think the romance was rushed, but there's been a bit of sweetness added which did make me feel warm and fuzzy inside so, points for that. I think I prefer more of a.. tender loving care romance with dashes of angst rather than an angsty romance with dashes of TLC (but I also don't read much true romance at all, so (and I think that's the crux of it, this is a fantasy-romance, a romantasy if you will, and I think I'm learning that this is just not my genre? I don't mind romance (Geralt/Yennifer, Kaz/Inej, even Tress/whatshisface), but I think I prefer when it's kind of secondary to a more driving plotline (or maybe there are better romantasies out there idk))).
Lots of media talk today hehe
Tary and/or Scanlan for the ask meme. To cover all our bases with Sam PCs, haha
I was wondering if I was going to be able to cover all of Sam's PCs with this lmao! Seeing as I do have a reputation to uphold re: sam's PCs, I will do them both
Tary:
First impression
Baby. Beloved. Pompous jackass whomst I love the most. True love at first sight and I am not kidding
Impression now
Baby. beloved. Pathetic pompous jackass I adore (I never stopped loving him, I have only grown to love him more)
Favorite moment
It is hard to choose between ALL of his bits in Jugs and Rods or the Grog and Tary shopping adventure in Vasselheim. Critical Role has TONS of funny moments and there is stuff in every campaign that has really gotten to me--but nothing like this. My abs ached the next day, I was fully weeping real fucking tears over this. I am laughing just thinking about it as I am typing. Fucking iconic.
Idea for a story
I have never considered a story with Tary specifically, but you know I'd love a story that explored Tary getting back together with Lawrence and how that aspect of their love story played out! I feel like that could be a very fun romance piece.
Unpopular opinion
Genuinely an incredible character, not as a joke, not for the bit. I mean, Tary is hilarious, yes. But I don't think Sam gets enough credit for how GOOD Tary was beyond the bit. He's a top tier character and deserves more credit from the fandom for it.
Favorite relationship
I'll split this one with Percy and Vex. Tary ends up being such good friends with both of them and his friendship with Vex is something I find particularly endearing (another Sam + Laura dynamic coming through golden) and then you add the layer of Tary's close friendship and unrequited pining for Percy into the mix....that whole dynamic of the three of them is great.
Favorite headcanon
I should really just delete this question because I never have headcanons to add. Idk. I don't really do head canons.
Scanlan:
First impression
Thought he was kind of gross and too sexually forward, ngl
Impression now
Probably my favorite of Vox Machina, not counting Tary. I don't know, he really grew on me. I think Scanlan circles around similar themes that all of Sam's PCs do, which is why I tend to gravitate toward them, you know? The eternal struggle of wanting to appear okay for your friends because you can't or won't invite the vulnerability of being honest about how you're struggling, only to hit a breaking point and lose it because no one has noticed your pain (because you have hidden it)? All the inherent complications and contradictions of that sort of thinking? Feels very realistic and relatable, for me, at least.
Favorite moment
It's so easy to choose The Bard's Lament for this. WHAT an incredible dramatic character move. Unparalleled, dramatic, complex, and it added so much to Scanlan's character and the dynamic with the group, forcing VM to sit with some things (and to get angry at him! Because he was unfair too!). I loved that shit, I ate it up.
But also, Scanlan's return to VM and trying to Modify Memory on Vex only to whiff it and her just hugging him. I fucking love that, too.
Idea for a story
You know, the thing is, this question is tickling some kind of memory of mine that I had actually planned to write something about Scanlan/Pikelan and I just cannot remember what on earth it was going to be. I can't even think of anything else, I'm just annoyed I can't remember what I was going to do, now
Unpopular opinion
I don't think Scanlan blowing up at VM and saying unfair things to them makes him a bad person or selfish or [insert whatever other thing here]. I think he was unwell, and had some valid reasons to be upset, and spoke in anger in a very human moment wherein neither party was entirely wrong or right. People apply judgement to that scene a lot, I think because it's very emotionally jarring, it's aggressive and unexpected and it prompts strong feeling because of that, but I don't think there's any judgment to be applied. VM was wrong about some things, Scanlan was wrong about some things. A big bundle of tragically human conflict, honestly, which is why it's fantastic.
Favorite relationship
Probably Grog. I love that whole corner of VM (Grog and his gnomes) and all their dynamics, but you can really feel such a camaraderie and care between these two that I love. Also Vex (that Sam + Laura dynamic always hits, I suppose)
C3E65 reaction
Imogen Laudna stuff in it's own separate untagged post. Don't search it out if you love the pairing, I'm not here for drama.
FUCKING fanTASTIC episode!!!! ALL of it!
Looking at the timeline for this, as I finished watching late last night but immediately went to bed rather than typing up my reaction, as I always then spent like, 2 or 3 hours on tumblr after no matter how much I say I'm just going to make my reaction then go to sleep.
We got some solid conversation between the groups, and Laudna's freakout was 100% justified. As much as team wildemount did have their own struggles (and they DID!), it was a much more comforting trip than team issylra, especially with all the downtime they got. (had team issylra gotten those five days of wibbly timeline, i'm not sure if it would have been downtime, or if it would have been hishari drama or other drama.)
At the start of the episode, both my mom and I were a bit confused as to why Ashton was so chipper. However, when they had their conversation with FCG about trying to do better, not necessarily being okay but not being bad either, finding a purpose, actively engaging in friendship rather than avoiding it for fear of being burnt again, THEN it made sense. It's certainly one of the times where I would have preferred Taliesin to show more of the emotional transition on screen, but that's not how Tal RPs, and I'm used to that. 4 Sided Dives/Talks are always the best to find out what's truly going on with Tal's PCs, which is a sign of how much he has the inner life for them, and also (in my slightly negative opinion) a sign of how much he isn't really showing it outright in main campaign. And I admit my usual annoyance with Ashton asking Milo to make something but not verbalizing it so that the cast can be surprised when Taliesin shows whatever it was off. I didn't mind it to start, and it made sense with a lot of Percy's things to not take up time, but I've since learned that Taliesin will just do this all the time and yeah. I'm over it. However, by the end of the episode we know at least that the immovable rod was put in the hammer, as well as the scatter spell crystals, so at the very least we know a good chunk, so I feel better about it.
No real comments on FCG's emotional state, especially re: FRIDA, as he right now seems to be keeping it pushed down. However, I did appreciate how much he pushed back on other party members in regards to the opinions of the gods. Things did get smoothed over a bit more easily than I was expecting it to, based on the comments from 6sd, but at the same time it makes absolute sense as this party really is the 'smooth things over' party, especially when compared with VM and M9. I don't consider it a bad thing, tbh, even though I love the interparty drama, because it's a different dynamic that's being explored.
As I've already talked about getting spoiled about the imodna kiss, I'll keep this section brief. 1) I adore how they clearly forgot how Matt held his face to do Zhudanna and I love that they both nearly lost it. 2) Marisha flailing whenever getting romanced will never not be funny. 3) I actually hope that when we next get her on 4sd, she can talk more about the fact that she built a PC to be 'unromanceable'. We know that Liam had designed Caleb to not have another romance, and we saw how that fell apart. I wonder what her thought process was behind it and how she feels about it going forwards, as Liam made the choice with Caleb to RP the unrequited, and then take the steps for the requited, whereas Laura took the initiative with this romance. 4) Pour one out for my mom who is mourning the platonic friendship that she felt mirrored very strongly a friendship that she has which she was enjoying seeing portrayed.
OKay, the NON-romance stuff! I'm very excited to see how it plays out with both Imogen and Laudna feeling the need for power from sources that they feel they can't trust. Laudna not even being able to admit that she wants the power from Delilah, this could be a very interesting road to go down. AND LUDINUS YOU FUCK. So excited to see where else he's dropping his propaganda. Is it just Marquet? It's GOT to be around all of Exandria, right???
Moving on to Fearne, Chetney, and Orym - I'm a little disappointed they didn't share more information with Ajit, but it was a good conversation nonetheless. There were a few things that he said which made me feel as if Matt was leaving a few options open for if the party wanted to do a few paid tasks in town, a la the Mighty Nein. I didn't see any of them being accepted, but I liked that they were still put out there, even if the party is pretty much mainlining the plot at this point. The bounty hunter sent by the shopkeeper was unexpected (or would have been if I hadn't gotten spoiled, dammit) and was a fun mini-combat! I wonder how long Matt had that sitting in his pocket.
THE DUSKMAVEN. That whole scene was SO good! I was a bit surprised at first with how emotional Orym was, considering he didn't really have a connection with her beforehand, until I realized that this was the first time he's been in any temple since the shit hit the fan. I suspect that no matter WHOSE temple it was, he would have been the same way, with the possible exception of the Dawnfather. Having multiple party members receive a vision was definitely a good play, as this moves from FCG being the only one with actual interaction to four members. Vax as an orb forever screaming? fun times fun times. ...there's the morbid angsty part of me that hopes they share that information with Keyleth who shares it with VM. LOOK I LIKE SOME GOOD HURT/COMFORT SOMETIMES OKAY.
LILLIANA ON RUIDUS. LUDINUS ON RUIDUS. IRA ON RUIDUS TALKING WITH REILORA. oh I cannot WAIT to see how things go from here! MOON'S HAUNTED Y'ALL AND THEY ARE GOING BACK WITH A GUN.
The Smart Variable Message Signs (VMS) market is driven by several key factors that influence its growth and demand. Here are some of the primary drivers:
Traffic Management and Road Safety Initiatives: Governments and transportation authorities worldwide are increasingly investing in smart traffic management solutions to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and enhance traffic flow. Smart VMS play a crucial role by providing real-time information to motorists about road conditions, incidents, detours, and speed limits, thereby contributing to safer and more efficient transportation networks.
Urbanization and Increasing Traffic Congestion: Rapid urbanization is leading to growing traffic congestion in cities globally. Smart VMS help manage traffic flow by providing timely information to drivers, guiding them to alternative routes or informing them about traffic conditions ahead, thus reducing congestion and travel times.
Integration with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): Smart VMS are integral components of ITS, which aim to leverage technology to improve transportation efficiency. They are often integrated with traffic monitoring systems, CCTV cameras, and data analytics platforms to provide comprehensive traffic management solutions.
Advancements in Display Technologies: Technological advancements in display technologies such as LED and LCD screens have enhanced the effectiveness of VMS in delivering clear and visible messages to drivers, even in varying weather and lighting conditions. This improves the overall utility and reliability of smart VMS systems.
Regulatory Mandates and Standards: Increasing regulatory mandates related to road safety and traffic management drive the adoption of smart VMS. Governments and regulatory bodies often set standards and guidelines for the deployment of VMS to ensure consistent and effective communication with drivers.
Demand for Real-time Information: In today's connected world, there is a high demand for real-time information and updates. Smart VMS meet this demand by providing dynamic and up-to-date messages that inform drivers about changing road conditions, weather alerts, accidents, construction zones, and other relevant information.
Smart City Initiatives: Many cities are embracing smart city initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for residents and optimizing resource use. Smart VMS contribute to these initiatives by enhancing mobility, reducing environmental impact through better traffic management, and supporting overall urban planning goals.
Overall, the Smart Variable Message Signs market is driven by the increasing need for efficient traffic management, advancements in technology, regulatory requirements, urbanization trends, and the demand for safer and smarter transportation solutions. These factors collectively propel the growth and adoption of smart VMS systems globally.
SUCCESSFACTORS FIELDGLASS INTEGRATION
Title: Streamline Your Total Workforce Management: SuccessFactors and Fieldglass Integration
Introduction
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, organizations increasingly rely on a hybrid workforce that includes traditional employees and contingent workers (contractors, freelancers, consultants). To effectively manage this diverse workforce, companies need robust technology solutions that streamline processes and provide a holistic view of their workforces. Integrating SAP SuccessFactors and SAP Fieldglass offers precisely that.
What is SAP SuccessFactors?
SAP SuccessFactors is a leading cloud-based Human Capital Management (HCM) suite that provides core HR functionalities like onboarding, payroll, time and attendance, talent management, and more. It acts as a central hub for all employee-related data.
What is SAP Fieldglass?
SAP Fieldglass is a comprehensive vendor management system (VMS) designed to optimize the sourcing, procurement, and management of contingent workers and services. It helps manage the end-to-end process of engaging and managing external workers.
Why Integrate SuccessFactors and Fieldglass?
Integrating these robust systems unlocks numerous benefits for organizations:
Total Workforce Visibility: You will gain a consolidated view of your entire internal and external workforce, enabling better decision-making and workforce planning.
Optimized Procurement Processes: Streamline the requisition, sourcing, and onboarding of contingent workers, ensuring compliance and cost savings.
Improved Data Accuracy: Maintaining a single source of truth for critical worker data reduces the risk of errors and redundancies.
Enhanced User Experience: Provide hiring managers and HR teams with a seamless, unified experience for managing all workforce types.
Key Integration Scenarios
Here are some of the core integration scenarios enabled by connecting SuccessFactors and Fieldglass:
Position Data Synchronization: Job requisitions created in SuccessFactors can be automatically replicated in Fieldglass to initiate the sourcing of contingent workers.
Contingent Worker Data Transfer: Once a contingent worker is selected in Fieldglass, their profile, rate information, and start date can be transferred to SuccessFactors for seamless record-keeping.
Time and Expense Management: Worker timesheets and invoices managed within Fieldglass can flow into SuccessFactors for consolidated reporting and payment processing.
Technical Considerations
The integration between SuccessFactors and Fieldglass typically involves a combination of pre-built connectors and API-based data exchange. Custom development might be required for complex business requirements.
Best Practices
To ensure a successful integration, remember the following:
Thorough Planning: Define your integration scope, identify data flows, map fields between systems, and establish a clear integration strategy.
Data Alignment: Ensure consistency in data formatting, definitions, and master data management across both systems.
Testing and Validation: Conduct thorough testing to ensure all scenarios work as expected.
Change Management: Communicate the impact of integration with end-users and provide comprehensive training.
Conclusion
By integrating SAP SuccessFactors and SAP Fieldglass, organizations can gain unprecedented control and insights into their total workforce. This powerful combination unlocks greater workforce agility, efficiency, and transparency, setting up businesses for continued success in the dynamic modern workplace.
Things I love about VM: Post Skates
3. They always hold hands throughout their bows.
VM:
Others:
This was the subject of the VERY first post I did on here. I love the way they bow, specifically that they never let go of hands. I said in the initial post about this that in a male/female partnership- on ice being a skating couple or where I come from the dance world- specifically ballet, it is customary for the man to gesture his woman forward to curtesy, then they will turn to face each other and bow, then a final one, sometimes holding hands in dance hold, to the audience again. Now obviously with skaters they have 4 (but sometimes they only do two) sides to bow to. I don’t love when they let go, especially as far as the two above examples do. You literally get the separation in the two skaters, it’s like they are each taking in the applause individually.. like ‘thank you yes I was amazing’, TS’s visual gives you ‘thank you for watching US, we did this together’. As I’ve said this is something you see with stage dancers- separation and the man gesturing to the woman, but this is a sport, you’re on a team, there are no ‘solo’ sections, everything you do, are judged for is together. The way skaters often do this kind of bow, the man’s gesture to the woman feels insincere, I don’t get from the way they do it they are actually thinking ‘look how amazing my partner is’. With TS you know neither of them is accepting more praise then the other, in fact even as they stay connected throughout their bows, you feel they are feeling their success for each other, or if their was a mistake from one of them, they are taking that responsibility together. There is no sense of two separate individuals with TS, just one team. Scott would sometimes.. I’m not even sure if it was on purpose, but some photos of them bowing from behind when he puts his hand behind him, shows he is casually pointing to Tessa from behind his back.. so in his own subtle way.. he does give all his praise to her.
TS have a very simple curtesy/bow routine that they have done since.. the earliest known competition footage (I’ve seen) is their lil junior rock and roll no. Then from there through international juniors and all the way through seniors they would take hands in dance hold, bow, then he would spin her to the back, then sides- never letting go of hands. The only variation was Tessa would sometimes curtesy with her knee to the ground, other times a shallow curtsy and sometimes just a head bow with her hand to her heart. The way they bow is another thing that shows the leadership dynamic in their on ice partnership- Scott is still the leader and is in control of her. He decides where they will stand for their bows, how many sides they will do, etc.. in this instance here:
After this second one there was a slight hesitation from her, not sure if they will bow to all sides. There is a very brief look between them, a slight nod from him then he proceeds to spin her to the next side seamlessly.
This once again comes back to leadership and trust in their partnership. I’m the most mutually respectful way, she does what he tells her to without question.
You can see in the way he spins her how he initiated it, even though she knows the bows are coming and what to do. I love how they do it because they stay literally physically connected the whole time, and this just, again extends on from their actual programs. Even though there are always a few moments in their programs where they aren’t physically touching, they are always connected- there’s that invisible string holding them together, and they never get more they need to be away from each other- it’s as if they really don’t like being far apart from each other and they always want to be as close as possible. So it’s like their bows are part of that, ‘no please don’t let go I want to stay close to you’. Also there’s this huge imagery of ‘we are a team’. They loved being on a team- the team of just the two of them, their larger support team, their country’s team. But the visual of the two of them taking in the applause together, connected, like they can’t be separated, says so much about the strength they feel together, and any minor/brief separation not only ruins that image, but they can feel, even centimetres way from each other is too far, and they would never stand and accept glory and praise without feeling the other there taking it in with them.
