Words from Herb Brooks
youtube
When I think of good leadership qualities & people (especially public figures) who have given me so much necessary food-for-thought (in terms of being a more effective leader) - I have to recognize Herb Brooks (famed U.S. Olympic Hockey Coach of the Miracle-on-Ice 1980 U.S. Hockey Team; see AWESOME; see YES I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES; see ONE OF THE GREATEST COACHES OF ALL TIME).
This video elaborates on some of the teachings of Herb Brooks, and I’d like to add that I’ve never played hockey (aside from street hockey as a kid just for fun on my own time). Herb Brooks’ words-of-wisdom go well beyond competitive sports - he is one of the few (if not, only) athletic coaches that has given advice that I actually follow & live by (to this very day). I have always been fascinated with Great Leadership (which I believe is the most underrated “SuperPower” if ever a concept were to be legitimate & absolutely true), especially with inspiring leadership. Herb Brooks is someone that I genuinely look up to (rest his soul) and I truly admire his leadership ability, not only as a hockey coach, but as a person. He was more than a hockey coach, he was an inspiration.
So, for anyone who actually has a developing (or genuine) interest in Leadership and what separates mediocre leadership & Awesome leadership - I highly recommend taking a moment to see what has been said from one the most inspiring leaders in American Sports History.

CANLTON'S CORNER: TEAM CANADA VS TEAM US WOMEN'S RIVALRY SERIES REVIEW
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - A wide array of fans of all ages streaming the games played between the Team USA and Team Canada in the "Rivalry Series" were given an amazing showcase of what is going on in Women's hockey. Among the crowd of 7,126 were grandmothers and grandfathers as they sat with their grandchildren. There were mothers and fathers sitting with their sons and daughters all waving American flags that were provided to them prior to the start of the second annual Rivalry Series that kicked off at the XL Center on Saturday night. The power of the crowd was important as they inspired Team USA on to a 4-1 win over Team Canada. “It was awesome to see all those fans out there, and (all) the young girls with their U-S-A chants. Anytime you get to play on your home soil, its always fun.” USA jerseys were abundantly adorned among the fans throughout the XL Center. There was even Charlie McAvoy's (Boston Bruins) number 25 worn in tribute to his time on the gold-medal winning Team USA squads he played for at the World Juniors. Another young boy and girl each wore a USA number 21. Mike Eruzione's jersey. Obviously they weren’t born back in 1980 when Eruzione lifted the entire nation out of it's collective depression scoring, "The Goal Heard Around The World," that allowed the USA to complete "The Miracle on Ice" when they defeated the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Olympics in the now aptly named, Herb Brooks Arena, in Lake Placid, NY. Another young girl was in her local, Northern Lights (Simsbury) jersey. She had skated with several Team USA players two days earlier at the International Ice Skating Center. The programs in Simsbury, Cromwell, and Bolton all run by former Hartford Whaler and New Haven Nighthawk, Bob Crawford. There were so many young girls in their hometown hockey program jerseys. Some of them came as much as an hour away from Hartford in Old Lyme, and Old Saybrook. It was not lost on defender, Megan Keller of Farmington Hills, Michigan. “Hopefully, we’re inspiring this younger generation just like the girls who came before us did for us.” The hope is clearly to bring the next generation and continue to grow the game larger than the previous generation. With the Northern Lights, the Lady Jr. Wolf Pack, and three high school programs now, they number between 350-400 and are moving in that direction. Three-time Olympian Hilary Knight, whose start came in Connecticut came with the Connecticut Polar Bears, which for some time was the only all girls program in this Tri-State region. “We had our alumni dropping the ceremonial puck tonight. They were our inspirations. We're building off of their shoulders. I know some of those girls (in the crowd) are they're gonna be filling our skates pretty soon." But apart from what happened on the ice, off the ice, it's also exceptionally important that they continue to build their brand. “This is a big series for us. In a second year of this, we’re playing not only for our country, but a trophy. It means something. I really like how this is spread out all over North America. Last year, it was three games. This year it's five. Maybe next year, it's seven?” Amanda Kessel said. The game in Hartford was televised nationally by NBC Sports Network. Tuesday’s night game in Moncton, New Brunswick was broadcast on the NHL Network. The US also won that game by a 2-1 score. It gave them a 2-0 lead in the series. That was not lost on Keller who thought is was extremely important that have the games on television. “To play these games and have them on TV is awesome to see our sport continue to grow,” She said. "We have the honor to play for our country and to play elite caliber hockey and is something we don’t take lightly.” While Team Canada is a more experienced lineup, the US roster is a mixture of available veterans and younger talent. The US roster will likely look slightly differently when the series resumes in Victoria, BC and Vancouver, BC and concludes in Anaheim, CA in February. Team USA's roster will be adding some collegiate talent that's unavailable to them now. The Canadians will also be looking to add some younger players as well, as they hope to change their fortunes come early February. One of the US newcomers is Abby Roque. She scored on Saturday in Hartford and then again on Tuesday in Moncton, on the game’s first shot. She's a perfect example of the new generation of players coming on board. In a few years time, the USA jerseys that carry the names of Kessel, Keller, Knight, Alex Carpenter, and Alex Cavallini will be worn by an ever larger, growing legion of this generation of women’s hockey fans, to which they added many more Saturday night. Their play on the ice in Hartford was sure to instill the inspiration that Keller mentioned as many of the young girls in attendance quite possibly left the building with the dream of one day winning an Olympic gold medal as part of Team USA. NOTE: The Women's Rivalry Series was not the first time a game of this magnitude was played in this building. The first came almost two generations ago when the Soviets, (Russians) came to the Hartford Civic Center, as it was known then, to play the WHA's New England Whalers, another landmark hockey historical moment in Hartford. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
The 1980 USA Hockey Team is the best moment in Sports History. What happened in Lake Placid was not only a miracle moment for America, but it was a moment for all underdogs. It was a real-life story of a group of young kids that went up against the best hockey team in the entire world (consecutively for years) and made history in a time when America had a lot of problems and signs of Hope were becoming harder and harder to find.
Never give up Hope and never lose Faith. Herb Brooks’ Leadership combined with the absolute dedication of those young guys showed everyone that YES it Can be done and YES - Miracles still happen!

CANTLON: COLLEGE PLAYOFFS ARE UNDERWAY
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HAMDEN, CT - The topsy-turvy world of Division I college hockey this year was on display again last weekend and in Hamden, CT being the most prime example. The Brown University Bears, a .500 team entering the weekend, upset the fifth-ranked team in the nation in the first round of ECAC quarterfinals, sweeping the Bobcats on their home ice. Last Friday, the Bears thoroughly out-played Quinnipiac who were without three players as a result of suspensions from an end of the regular-season wild brawl with both the league and intra-state rival, Yale. On Saturday night, Alex Whalen scored two goals and gave QU a seemingly safe 2-0 lead entering the third period. That lead disappeared faster than you could say, "Quinnipiac." The Bobcats surrendered two goals, 32 seconds apart in the first 1:54 of the final frame from Max Gottlieb, (Old Bridge, NJ) and Tommy Marchin. Brown built a 3-2 lead in part from a gorgeous Alex Beaudoin breakaway goal. Beaudoin took a loose puck at the blue line and snapped a shot to the stick-side and they held on for the 4-3 win to advance to the conference semifinals this coming weekend in Lake Placid, NY. It will be their first appearance since 2012. A key play in the second period was a blocked shot by Zach Giuttari (Loomis Chaffe) of an open net shot after Brown netminder, Gavin Nieto, was caught out of position on an attempt by Ethan de Jong. The blocked shot kept the score at 2-0. Yale's season ended when they lost in two straight games to Clarkson University in the always tough arena. In Hockey East, in Game 1, UMASS-Amherst had to go to double-overtime to win 6-5, but they came back in Game 2 with a 6-0 series-ending win over New Hampshire. The Hockey East playoffs at the TD Bank Garden in Boston saw BU vs. Northeastern in the first game and Boston College vs. UMASS-Amherst in the second. Hockey East Major awards were announced with Hobey Baker nominee Cale Makar being named the conference's Player of the Year. In UCONN’s season-ending win over UMASS-Amherst, Huskies head coach Mike Cavanaugh gave a full vote on Makar. “He plays at another level and that is one of the best defensive corps in the country. He’s got my vote for Hobey Baker.” BU’s freshmen, Joel Farabee, was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year. UMASS-Amherst's head coach, Greg Carvel, won Coach of the Year by guiding the Minutemen to their first conference title ever. The Big 10 Final has a football feel to it with Penn State playing at Notre Dame. NCHC semifinals at the Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, MN pits Colorado College vs. St. Cloud State and defending national champion University Minnesota-Duluth against Denver. The ECAC Final Four at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid sees Cornell vs. Brown and Clarkson vs. Harvard. In Division III, at the Frozen Four being held at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, one of the semis features the host school playing Hobart College and Norwich University (VT) playing Geneseo (NY). WOMEN’S FROZEN FOUR The National Women’s Four comes to Quinnipiac this weekend at People United Center. On Friday there will be two semifinal games and the Final on Sunday. Among the four finalists participating are the Wisconsin Badgers. They are coached by former Hartford Whaler and member of the famed 1980 US Olympian, Mark Johnson. They make their sixth straight Final Four appearance and feature Jessica DeVito (Kent School). #6th ranked Cornell knocked off the #3 ranked team, Northeastern, winning in overtime on a breakaway goal by Gillis Frechette to earn their berth. It’s their first Final Four appearance since 2012 and the Lady Big Red feature Paige Lewis from New Canaan. #4th ranked Clarkson, a two-time defending national champion, will make their fifth straight appearance in the Final Four. They won as leading scorer Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QC) tallied the overtime winner over #5th Boston College, the Lady Eagles winning by a score of 3-2. Both games are airing on the Big 10 Network at 4 pm and 7 pm with Sunday’s Final at 2:30 pm. INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY The Kuwait Warriors won their first title in the KIHL (Kuwait Ice Hockey League) beating the Kuwait Stars in their short season four-team league. They finished nine points ahead of the Stars. The league-leading scorer is a Serbian, Bodan Zidarevic. He is one of eight import players in the league the rest of teams rosters are Kuwait natives as they seek to grow the sport in the Arabian peninsula. One of those other imports was the league’s second-leading scorer, Czech-born and former Danbury Whaler, Kamil Vavra, who is with the Kuwait Falcons. Vavra also is an assistant coach with the Kuwait National Team Read the full article
