A Sip a Day Keeps the Flames at Bay
I'll admit, I used to dread waking up with burning eyes after a night of burning the midnight oil. But after just three days of incorporating wild chrysanthemum tea into my morning routine, I started to feel the magic happening. Those burning sensations slowly faded away, and my eyes felt refreshed and cool once again.
Caution: Not for the Chilly Stomachs
Before you get too excited and stock up on these incredible petals, there's a small caveat. Wild chrysanthemums are known for their cooling properties, which means they may not be suitable for women with cold stomachs or those going through their menstrual periods. It's always best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure you're choosing the right remedy for your body.
Choose the Natural Route
Sure, bezoar detoxification may provide temporary relief, but relying on it long-term can come with its own set of side effects. So why not opt for a more holistic approach? Let wild chrysanthemums be your ultimate ally in clearing away the fire within, keeping those burning eyes at bay without any nasty consequences.
Quote: "Give your eyes the gift of soothing relief. Nature has the power to heal, so sip on the magic of wild chrysanthemums and let your eyes dance with delight." - Unknown
Remember, good sleep is still essential, but a little help from nature never hurts. So go ahead, indulge in the power of wild chrysanthemums and bid farewell to burning eyes for good. Your peepers deserve it! 🌼👀🔥

While the purity of Camellia Sinensis is a marvel in itself, the world of tea extends far beyond the simple leaf that is often called a True Tea. Let's talk about flavor-infused tea.
Tumblr media
Infused tea
The practice of infusing tea with flavors dates back centuries, with evidence of flavored teas found in ancient Chinese and Indian cultures. Early methods of infusion involved adding herbs, spices, or flowers directly to the tea leaves during steeping. Over time, more sophisticated techniques were developed, such as extracting essential oils from aromatic plants and adding them to the tea.
Today, infused teas are typically created using one of two methods:
Direct Infusion: The most common method involves adding dried herbs, spices, or fruits directly to the tea leaves before steeping. This allows the flavors to infuse naturally into the tea, creating a harmonious blend.
Flavoring Oils: Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants can be added to the tea after steeping. This method allows for precise control over the intensity of the flavor and can be used to create subtle or bold infusions.
One of the most renowned flavor-infused teas is Earl Grey, a black tea infused with the fragrant oil of bergamot orange. The citrusy notes of bergamot dance harmoniously with the rich, full-bodied flavor of black tea, creating a truly exquisite beverage. Earl Grey is a versatile tea that can be enjoyed hot or iced, and it pairs well with a variety of foods.
Aside from Earl Grey, the world of flavor-infused teas is vast and varied. From the delicate floral notes of jasmine tea to the bold fruity flavors of berry teas, there is a flavor combination to suit every palate.
Tumblr media
Pictured above: (top) Jasmine infused green tea from Fujian Tea Import & Export Co., (bottom) Blood Orange herbal tea from Harney & Sons Fine Teas. [Blend: Apple pieces, rose hips, hibiscus, beetroot, orange peel, orange flavor, marigold petals, safflower petals.]
Some of the other popular flavor-infused teas include:
Jasmine Tea: A green tea infused with jasmine flowers, offering a delicate floral aroma and a slightly sweet taste.
Chai Tea: A black tea spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger, creating a warm and comforting blend.
Fruit Teas: A variety of teas infused with fruit flavors, such as strawberry, raspberry, or peach, providing a sweet and tangy taste.
Fruit teas are excellent for cold-brewed iced tea. I will cover cold-brewing later, so please look forward to that.
When choosing a flavor-infused tea, consider your personal preferences and the occasion. A delicate floral tea might be perfect for a relaxing afternoon, while a bold and spicy chai tea could be a comforting choice on a cold day.
The choice of infusion depends on the desired flavor profile and the characteristics of the ingredients being used. For example, delicate floral flavors may be best achieved using direct infusion, while strong, bold flavors can be created using flavoring oils.
If you wish to create your own infused tea, that will have to be a separate post. For now, it is enough to be able to identify the tea you are brewing so that you can handle it appropriately.
Brewing infused teas requires a balance of technique and intuition. First, identify the ingredients. When brewing a cup of tea, it's good to know what temperature and length of time to steep your tea for.
A tea labeled "Peach" may be a white tea with peach flavoring, and it may be best to brew it at a temperature appropriate for white tea. Blends may consist of varying ingredients that require different temperatures, so some experimentation may be in order to find the best brewing temperature to get the most of each flavor.
Tumblr media
Herbal tea
Beyond the True Tea, there lies a world of herbal teas, each offering a unique blend of flavors and health benefits. Herbal teas are made from a variety of plants, including herbs, spices, and fruits. They are often enjoyed for their medicinal properties, as well as their delicious taste.
As no part of an herbal tea contains the Camellia Sinensis plant, these teas are not considered "True Teas". That does not mean we cannot enjoy them, however.
For the most part, an herbal tea will not contain any caffeine, unlike the tea produced from the Camellia Sinensis plant. This makes them more suitable to enjoy in the evening or late hours.
Tumblr media
Pictured above: (from top to bottom) Roses, honeysuckle, chrysanthemums, mint and lavender.
Some popular herbal teas include:
Chamomile Tea: Made from chamomile flowers, this tea is known for its calming and relaxing properties.
Peppermint Tea: Made from peppermint leaves, this tea is refreshing and aids digestion.
Ginger Tea: Made from ginger root, this tea is warming and can help soothe an upset stomach.
Hibiscus Tea: Made from hibiscus flowers, this tea has a tart, fruity flavor and is rich in antioxidants.
As with many blends, it is helpful to experiment a little with the temperature and steep time to get the most of your tea. Intuition will follow experience.
Tumblr media
The ideal steeping temperature for infused teas and herbal teas can vary depending on the specific ingredients and desired flavor intensity. However, here are some general guidelines:
Delicate floral or fruity teas: 175-185°F (79-85°C)
Bold, spicy teas: 195-212°F (90-100°C)
Herbal teas: 175-212°F (79-100°C), depending on the specific herbs used
Serving suggestions: Cream is usually not served with fruit teas, as the acidity in some will cause the milk to curdle. Lemon slices are commonly served with Earl Grey, however, as with the fruit tea, lemon can also cause cream to curdle. Sugar or honey are appropriate for nearly any tea.
It's always a good idea to experiment with different temperatures to find the perfect brew for your taste. I hope this has been informational and helpful to my students who wish to become better acquainted with tea.

Tincture: A solution of alcohol and plant material. To create a tincture, you take the plant whos properties you wish to extract, put it in a container, and just cover it with a clear alcohol (needs to be at least 20% ethanol). Stir and let it sit for s few days to pull out as much as possible. Strain out the plant matter and the liquid you're left with is your tincture. If you want it more concentrated, you could leave it out without a lid, letting the alcohol evaporate naturally, or you could attempt a distillation, but you should do research for that to see what temperature the chemical you want evaporates at (this will tell you which solution will be your concentrated tincture, alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature than water).
Poultice: A mash of plant matter. This is simple and there are 2 ways to do this: dirty and clean. The dirty way is to chew the plant matter. An example of this is you're out hiking, you have an accident (non-life-threatening), and you're bleeding. You find some plantain near you, so you grab it. You chew the leaves until they're mush and place this over the wound. The clean way would have you grab a mortar, place the plant material in it, and mash it with the pestel, making sure to add water if it's too dry (you want it almost like a paste).
Salve: Similar to a poultice, but mixed with oil and something to set it. What you're after in the poultice is the juice that comes out of the plants more than anything, but having bits of the plant in the salve can be fine too, and salves can also be made with resin. You would mix the medicinal ingredient in with oil (you'll have to play with the ratio based on the plant and oil being used) and then melt in something like beeswax (start with a low wax to solution ratio first, add more wax if it doesn't set enough, too much wax will make the salve too hard).
Tea: Water steeped with plant material. This is a very simple one to understand. Doesn't even have to be plants even, turkey tail mushroom is a known medicinal tea ingredient (the jury is still out on its medicinal benefits, it's being looked into). The longer you steep, the more you leech (and the worse it may taste). You drink it right after steeping, it does not preserve itself.
None of these are going to make you a panacea, they're more than likely just going to help with more minor issues. For serious issues, seek more in depth medical help - scientific herbalism can only go so far. There's also a lot of science stuff I didn't include here about how certain chemicals might interact in the various methods, things like that very much depend on what's being used and what's desired. Make sure you do research on something before you try it, see what information is already out there about it. Contribute to the growth of open medical science by testing things, but be safe when testing - don't just ingest literal poison to see if it will cure cancer or something.

Herbalism 101: Mullein Leaf
Fun fact: Mullein is a member of the Snap Dragon Family.
Tumblr media
The Mullein plant has been around for years and has more than 200 species. The most popular type is common mullein (Verbascum Thapsus.) the leaves harvested near the bottom of the plant and used either dried or fresh.
Mullein flowers and leaves were used on animals and people for a variety of issues:
Cough
Congestion
Bronchitis
Asthma
Constipation
Pain
Inflammation
Migraine
Sleep
Gout
By the late 1800s, mullein became a popular treatment for people with tuberculosis in Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Keep in mind that many of the benefits of mullein are based on anecdotal experiences. More human clinical studies are needed to understand the benefits of this herb. -Healthline
Mullein leaf is sold in various forms:
Tea
Extract
Oil
Powder
Capsule
Elixir
Some can be made into creams.
Some herbalists recommend mullein for respiratory and inflammatory conditions, but there is not enough scientific evidence of its effectiveness. -Healthline
Dioscorides, a Greek physician pharmacologist and botanist, practicing in the 1st century in Rome, who authored the herbal De Materia Medica, was one of the first to recommend mulleins use in lung conditions around 2,000 years ago. It was used as a hair wash in ancient Roman times; the leaf ash to darken hair, and the yellow flowers for lightening it. The leaves were dried, rolled and used as wicks for candles and the entire dried flowering stalks were dipped in tallow and used for torches, hence the names 'candlewick plant' or 'torches'. According to Maida Silverman in her book A City Herbal, " The great respect and love formerly accorded to mullein can be inferred from the number and variety of the folk names for it." -Mountain Rose herbs.
Mullein leaf, flower, and root, with its litany of folk uses ranging from 'nature's toilet paper' to an effective apotropaic (fancy word meaning that which wards off evil spirits), have been used extensively in folk medicine. Its magical qualities were numerous, going beyond simply warding off evil but also was thought to instill courage and health, provide protection, and to attract love. In fact, it was believed that wearing mullein would ensure fertility and keep potentially dangerous animals at bay while trekking along in the wilderness. Further, allegedly a practice for men in the Ozark mountains to attract love consisted of simply pointing the mullein's flowering stalk towards the direction of his love's house and seeing if the stalk went upright again indicating her reciprocated love. Mullein, like so many herbs of European origin, was introduced by the colonists and then incorporated into the Native American healing tradition. The root was made into a necklace for teething infants by the Abnaki tribe, the Cherokee applied the leaves as a poultice for cuts and swollen glands, and other tribes rubbed the leaves on the body during ritual sweat bathes. Additionally, the flowers were used internally as teas and topically as poultices. The Navajos smoked mullein, referring to it as "big tobacco" and the Amish were known to partake as well. Presently, mullein can be found at health food stores often prepared as soothing leaf tea or an ear oil made of the infused flowers. -mountainroseherbs
According to King's American dispensatory (a book first published in 1854 that covers the uses of herbs used in American medical practice), "upon the upper portion of the respiratory tract its influence is pronounced." Mullein was prescribed by Eclectic Physicians (a branch of American medicine popular in the 1800-early 1900's which made use of botanical remedies) who considered it to be an effective demulcent and diuretic, and a mild nervine "favoring sleep." -Mountain Rose herbs.
DISCLAIMER: Precautions Small hairs on mullein leaf may cause mechanical irritation in the mouth and throat if not filtered out of extracts prior to consumption. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
