Cregan Stark x Targ!Reader

Cregan Stark was indubitably a wolf: ever since he sprang up from his mother's northern womb he had a savage attitude kept in place by his house's sterling reputation for personal integrity. But when his gaze locked onto yours, all semblance of restraint evaporated from his big muscled body like a snowflake slowly melting under the hot sun. When he met you, he felt like a starved animal ready to pounce, to hunt, to eat something so positively delicious that it would satisfy him to no end...
Despite having lived your whole pampered life on Dragonstone, under your mother's constant and loving supervision, you felt at home in the snow covered Winterfell. And when you descended from your mauve scaly beast with a wingspan bigger than the tallest watchtower in Deepwood Motte, you shivered although you were drowning in thick layers of fur and wool. That is, because you met Cregan. He looked at you with an intesity that was at odds with the iciness of the climate and you could do little but avert your gaze to avoid losing yourself in those stormy grey eyes that twinkled with desire.
"My lord, it is an honor," you curtsied clumsily due to your heavy attire but Cregan quickly put a hand on yours to help stabilize you and prevent you from falling face-first in the snow.
"The honor is all mine, my princess," he replied in a husky voice that almost brought tears to ths corners of your eyes. Whatever passed between you was a dangerous thing, hotter than fire, yet fickler than a shard of thin ice.
"I hope your journey was pleasant," he said.
"Oh, definitely, my lord of Winterfell. Now, I believe the politics and scheming can wait for the morrow, but riding Kocsaryon has made my belly rumble in hunger. A feast is in order, if it please you."
Cregan gave a curt nod and led you to the Main Hall, where a feast had already been laid out. The long wooden tables groaned under the weight of hearty soups for each heart, each dish more decadent than the last, the aromas mingling in the air like a seductive promise of indulgence.
At the center of the hall stood a massive boar, its skin crisp and golden, crackling with fat that had been painstakingly rendered over hours of slow roasting. It was stuffed with onions, apples, and a medley of herbs that filled the air with their heady scent. The juices ran clear as it was carved, pooling on the thick wooden platters beneath, where hunks of dark meat were passed around to eager hands.
Beside it, platters of venison, seasoned with juniper and garlic, had been seared to perfection, the meat tender and pink within, the crust dark and fragrant. Roasted root vegetables, earthy and sweet, nestled alongside them, their edges caramelized to a rich mahogany.
A serving girl approached Cregan to clear away a platter of untouched meat and your eyes darkened when her hair brushed against Stark's shoulder.
You stuffed yourself until your belly groaned and then you chanced a glance again at Cregan who was watching as you cleaned your fingers by putting them in your mouth and slowly sucking in a suggestive gesture that was meant as a provocative invitation. Lord Stark's eyes hardened with unmistakable lust and he rose abruptly, mumbling excuses to confused guests. He promptly grabbed your hand and led you outside.
"If you will follow me, my lady. I have something to show you."
By the time you left the warmth of the Great Keep, you were wholly intrigued by this escapade. Cregan knelt before the weirwood tree that seemed to weep blood as you joined him in prayer.
"So, are going to..." No sooner had you started to ask your question, than Cregan's lips were on yours, kissing you with a ferocious intensity that went beyond mere words. His expert tongue left a trail of saliva down the column of your neck, your jaw... He licked and sucked like a newborn wolf pup, but his groans were the howl of a fully grown member of the pack.
"Oh, gods!" you yelled, uncaring of who may hear.
He quickly disrobed you, your smallclothes thrown far, far away and then you were naked beneath his lord's piercing gaze, trembling with anticipation as heat pooled between your legs.
"Cregan, pleaaase!"
The night beneath the godswood was a symphony of passion and primal need. The ancient trees stood silent witness as you and Cregan came together, your bodies intertwining with an intensity that left you both breathless. The air was cold, biting even, but the heat in your lower stomach was enough to ward off the chill for a time.
He kissed you with a fervor that spoke of years of restraint finally unleashed. His hands, rough and calloused from a lifetime of wielding swords and axes, were surprisingly gentle as they roamed your body, tracing every curve and dip as if committing you to memory. You shivered beneath his touch, but it wasn't from the cold. It was from the raw power and the undeniable hunger in his eyes, the kind that made you feel like the only thing in the world that mattered.
As the night deepened, the cold crept closer, seeping into your bones. But you were too lost in him, too lost in the way he made you feel alive in a way you had never experienced before. You clung to him, seeking warmth and comfort in the strength of his embrace, in the heat of his body pressed against yours.
But the North was unforgiving. The warmth of passion was no match for the biting cold of the northern winter. Even as Cregan held you close, his hairy body shielding you from the worst of the elements, the chill began to seep into your skin, turning your breath to fog and your lips to ice.
Cregan sensed it before you did, the way your shivers became more violent, more uncontrollable. He pulled back, his brow furrowing in concern as he looked into your eyes, now glassy with the onset of hypothermia. His heart clenched painfully in his chest at the sight.
"You're freezing," he murmured, his voice rough with worry. He pulled you closer, trying to rub warmth back into your limbs, but it was too late. The cold had already taken hold, and no amount of heat from him could chase it away.
You tried to smile, tried to reassure him that you were fine, but the words caught in your throat, your lips too numb to form them. You could feel the warmth of life slipping away, could feel the darkness creeping in at the edges of your vision. But you didn't want to let go, not when you were here, in his arms, where you had always dreamed of being.
"Cregan..." you whispered, your voice barely more than a breath. "I'm sorry..."
His eyes widened in horror as he realized what was happening. "No," he growled, shaking his head. "No, don't you dare leave me."
But you were already slipping away, your body going limp in his arms. The last thing you felt was the warmth of his tears on your face, the last thing you heard was the desperate, broken sound of his voice calling your name, begging you to stay.
When the dawn broke, the godswood was silent, the snow around you undisturbed save for the imprint of Cregan's body beside yours. He held you tightly, even as the life had long since fled from your body, refusing to let go, refusing to accept that you were gone.
The godswood bore witness to many things over the centuries, but the sight of the Lord of Winterfell, the fearsome wolf of the North, cradling the lifeless body of the one he loved, was something that would linger in its memory forever.
For Cregan Stark, the godswood would never again be a place of peace, but a place of sorrow, a reminder of the warmth he had once held in his arms and the cold that had stolen it away.

猫猫「帰ってきたんだ…んん…ああ…べたつく。おやじは…畑か」
Maomao “Kaette kitanda. Nn…Aa… Betatsuku. Oyajiwa… hatake ka.”
Maomao “Oh, right, I’m home. So sticky. Dad… Must be out in the field.”
猫猫「もう、年も年だし、畑仕事はやめてもらいたいが…自分で育てた薬草で、薬作るのが好きなんだよな、おやじ」
Maomao “Mo, toshimo toshi-dashi, hatake-shigotowa yamete moraitaiga… Jibunde sodateta yakusode, kusuri tsukuru-noga sukinan-dayona, oyaji.”
Maomao “I wish he’d stop working the field at his age, but he just really enjoys making medicine out of the herbs he grows.”
猫猫「壊れる…見ない顔だな。よその禿か…。おやじなら、ちょっ…」
Maomao “Kowareru… Minai kaodana. Yosono kamuroka… Oyajinara, cho…”
Maomao “Don’t break it. I don’t know you. Are you a servant at a different brothel? My dad’s- Hey!”

猫猫「まだだ!男が息してない。女の呼吸も浅い。喉に嘔吐物が残ってないか確認する。そっちを頼む」
Maomao “Madada! Otokoga iki shitenai. Onnano kokyumo asai. Nodoni outo-butsuga nokotte-inaika kakunin suru. Socchio tanomu.”
Maomao “Right! The man isn’t breathing! The woman’s breathing is too weak. We’ll check if there’s any vomit left in their throats. You check her.”
妓女「え…ええ」
Gijo “E…ee.”
Courtesan “Y-Yes!”
猫猫(脈もない…喉には詰まってない。唾液だけか)
Maomao (Myakumo nai. Nodo-niwa tsumatte-nai. Daeki dakeka.)
Maomao (No pulse. Nothing clogging the throat. Just saliva.”
妓女「水を持ってきて!」
Gijo “Mizuo motte-kite!”
Courtesan “Bring water!”
猫猫「水は飲ませるな!炭だ、炭を用意しろ」
Maomao “Mizuwa nomaseruna! Sumida, sumio yoi-shiro.”
Maomao “No water! Bring charcoal. Charcoal!”
禿「は…はい!」
Kamuro “Ha…Hai!”
Serving girl “Y-Yes!”
猫猫「朝から一体、何なんだよ…あ~、風呂入りたい」
Maomao “Asa-kara ittai, nannan-dayo… Aaa, furo hairi-tai.”
Maomao “Great way to start the morning. Wow, I need a bath…”
妓女「ありがとう、薬屋さん。2人とも落ち着いたわ」
Gijyo “Arigato, kusuriya-san. Futari-tomo ochi-tsuitawa.”
Courtesan “Thank you, apothecary. They’re both stable now.”
猫猫「あ…そのままにしてくれ」
Maomao “A… Sono-mamani shite-kure.”
Maomao “Wait, leave that alone.”
妓女「吐いたものも?」
Gijo “Haita monomo?”
Courtesan “Even what they threw up on?”
猫猫「毒が残ってるかもしれない」
Maomao “Dokuga nokotteru-kamo shirenai.”
Maomao “There could still be poison in it.”
妓女「毒?!」
Gijo “Doku?!”
Courtesan “Poison…”
妓女「お茶の準備するわね」
Gijo “Ochano junbi suru-wane.”
Courtesan “I’ll go make some tea.”
猫猫(倒れていたのは妓女と、その客…部屋には酒とタバコの匂いが充満していた。酒瓶が2つ。割れたガラスの器。これは…麦稈か?キセルに、タバコの葉…面倒くさいことをやらかすもんだ)
Maomao (Taorete-itanowa gijoto, sono kyaku… Heya-niwa saketo tabakono nioiga juman shite-ita. Saka-binga futatsu. Wareta garasuno utsuwa. Korewa…mugiwaraka? Kiseruni, tabakono ha… Mendo-kusai koto’o yarakasu monda.)
Maomao (The two who collapsed here were a courtesan and her customer. The room was filled with the scent of alcohol and tobacco. Two bottles. Broken glass cups. This is… a wheat stalk? A pipe and some tobacco leaves. They really went out of their way to cause trouble.)
禿「これ、炭…」
Kamuro “Kore, sumi…”
Serving girl “I’ve got the charcoal…”
猫猫「ああ、あと木簡と、書くものも」
Maomao “Aa, ato mokkanto kaku-monomo.”
Maomao “Good. Also, get me a text plate and something to write with.”
禿「え?」
Kamuro “E?”
Serving girl “Huh?”
猫猫「南の外壁のそばの畑に、うちのおやじがいるはずだから、あとで連れてきてくれ」
Maomao “Minamino gaihekino sobano hatakeni, uchino oyajiga iru-hazu dakara, atode tsurete kite-kure.”
Maomao “My dad should be out in the fields, near the southern wall. Bring him over here later.”
禿「分かった」
Kamuro “Wakatta.”
Serving girl “Got it.”
猫猫「遅かったな、おやじ」
Maomao “Osokattana, Oyaji.”
Maomao “You’re late, Dad.”
羅門「この子が足を気遣ってくれたんだ」
Ruomen “Kono koga ashio kizukatte kuretanda.”
Luomen “This girl was worried about my leg.”
猫猫「炭は潰しておいた」
Maomao “Sumiwa tsubushite oita.”
Maomao “I crashed the charcoal.”
羅門「ああ、すぐに薬草に混ぜて飲ませよう」
Ruomen “Aa, suguni yakusoni mazete nomaseyo.”
Luomen “Yes, let’s mix it with the herbs and give it to them immediately.”
妓女「飲める?」
Gijo “Nomeru?”
Courtesan “Can you drink this?”
妓女「あの人は?」
Gijyo “Ano hitowa?”
Courtesan “What about him…?”
妓女「無事よ。薬も飲んだし」
Gijo “Bujiyo. Kusurimo nondashi.”
Courtesan “He’s safe. He had the medicine, too.”
羅門「処置の仕方は、まあまあかな」
Ruomen “Shochino shikatawa, maa-maa-kana.”
Luomen “Your treatment’s not bad.”
猫猫「まあまあかい」
Maomao “Maa-maa-kai.”
Maomao “‘Not bad’, huh?”
猫猫(おやじは、1の情報から、2も3も知ることができる人間だ)
Maomao (Oyajiwa, ichi-no joho-kara ni-mo san-mo shiru kotoga dekiru ningenda.)
Maomao (Dad’s able to deduce two or three things from a single piece of information.)
羅門「これは何の毒だと思った?」
Ruomen “Korewa nanno doku-dato omotta?”
Luomen “What kind of poison do you think this was?”
猫猫(来た!親父はたまにこうやって勉強させようとする)
Maomao (Kita! Oyajiwa tamani ko-yatte benkyo saseyoto suru.)
Maomao (Here goes! Dad sometimes tries to make me learn stuff this way.)
猫猫「タバコの葉は猛毒だ。心中で使うなら、これだと思う」
Maomao “Tabakono hawa modokuda. Shinju-de tsukau-nara, koredato omou.”
Maomao “Tobacco leaves are deadly poisons. That would be what they’d use in a double suicide.”
羅門「水は飲ませなかったようだね」
Ruomen “Mizuwa nomase-nakatta-yodane.”
Luomen “You didn’t have them drink water, right?”
猫猫「飲んだら逆効果だろ?」
Maomao “Nondara gyaku-koka daro?”
Maomao “Water would make things worse, right?”
羅門「そうだね、胃液が毒の吸収を抑えることもあるから、その場合は逆効果だろう。でも、もしこれが、最初から水に溶かしたものであったなら?」
Ruomen “Sodane, iekiga dokuno kyushuo osaeru kotomo aru-kara, sono baaiwa gyaku-koka daro. Demo, moshi korega, saisho-kara mizuna tokashita monode atta-nara?”
Luomen “Correct. Gastric juices can prevent the intake of poison in some cases, so diluting it might make things worse. However, what if this poison was already soaked in water?”
猫猫(ハッ…嘔吐物に葉が混じってない。見逃した…まだ寝ぼけてんのかな。水に溶かしたものであれば、薄めた方がいい場合もある。よし…覚えた)
Maomao (Ha… Outo-butsuni haga majitte inai. Minogashita… Mada neboketen-nokana. Mizuni tokashita monode areba, usumeta-hoga ii baaimo aru. Yoshi…oboeta.)
Maomao (There are no leaves in the vomit. I missed that. Maybe I’m still half asleep. If the poison was soaked in water, sometimes diluting it with more water is good. Got it. Lesson learned.)

婆「ほんとに助かったよ。これは心ばかりだが…」
Babaa “Hontoni tasukattayo. Korewa kokoro-bakari-daga…”
Madam “You really saved us. This is just a small token of our gratitude.”
羅門「いや、そんなに…」
Ruomen “Iya, sonnani…”
Luomen “Oh no, that’s too much―”
猫猫「おやじ。今月、やり手婆に家賃払えるのか?」
Maomao “Oyaji. Kongetsu, Yarite-Babaani yachin haraeru-noka?”
Maomao “Dad, can you afford rent this month?”
羅門「では…」
Ruomen “Dewa…”
Luomen “Ah, in that case…”
猫猫(まったくこの親父は…。今回のは、花街では珍しくもない心中だろう。身請けできない男と、年季の明けない女がそろえば、そんなことばかり思いつくのだ。…しかしあの男、身なりは随分上等だった。顔だちも甘く、金にも女にも困りそうにない。偏見で考えると怒られそうだが…妓女との未来を憂いて毒を飲むようには見えなかった…)
Maomao (Mattaku kono oyajiwa… Konkai-nowa hana-machi-dewa mezurashikumo nai shinju daro. Miuke dekinai otokoto, nenkino akenai onnaga soroeba, sonna koto bakari omoi-tsuku-noda. Maomao (Jeez, you old man… Must have been a double suicide. Not exactly rare in the pleasure district, A man who can’t afford to buy out a courtesan, and a courtesan with time left on her term. People like that often reach this same conclusion. Still, that man was very well-dressed. He had a handsome face, too. Didn’t seem like someone who’d be short on money or women. Dad wouldn’t approve of me judging through stereotypes, but… He didn’t seem like someone who’d drink poison with a courtesan out of despair for their future.)
猫猫「ちょっと、様子を見てくる」
Maomao “Chotto, yosuo mite-kuru.”
Maomao “I’m going to go check on them.”
猫猫(男の方が容体が重かったな…)
Maomao (Otokono hoga yodaiga omokattana…)
Maomao (The man seemed to be in worse condition…)
猫猫「何やってる!」
Maomao “Nani yatteru!”
Maomao “What are you doing?!”
禿「邪魔しないで!こんなやつ、死んだ方がいいんだ!」
Kamuro “Jama shinaide! Konna yatsu, shinda-hoga iinda!”
Serving girl “Don’t stop me! This guy deserves to die!”
妓女「あっ、あんたたち、何してるの!」
Gijo “A, Anta-tachi, nani shiteruno!”
Courtesan “Wh-What are you doing?!”
妓女「薬屋さん、ちょっとお話いいかしら?」
Gijo “Kusuriya-san, chotto ohanashi iikashira?”
Courtesan “Apothecary, may I speak with you?”
妓女「彼は元々、問題の多い客だったの。妓女に甘い言葉をかけて身請けをほのめかしては、飽きたら捨てるを繰り返す。恨みばかり買って、逆上した女に刺されそうになったり、毒を盛られたこともあったわ。けど、豪商の父親に甘やかされて、ことあるごとに金で解決してた。最近では、親に頼んで、娼館まで護衛を付けて来ていたわ。この子の姉も、あの男に捨てられたの。これから���一緒に暮らせるって、喜んでいたのに…身請けの当日に、急に白紙にされて…だから、許せなかったんだと思う。今回一緒に毒を飲んだ子にも、懐いていたから」

Courtesan “That man was always a problem customer. He’d sweet-talk a courtesan and insinuate that he would buy her out. When he got tired of her, he’d just dump her. He was widely hated. Some woman tried to stab him, even. He’d been poisoned in the past, too. But his rich merchant father pampers him. He settles everything with money. Recently, he asked his father to hire guards for him to travel to the brothels with. This girl’s older sister got dumped by him, too. She was so happy she could live with him, but on the day of the buy-out, he suddenly canceled on her. That’s why, I think, she couldn’t forgive him. The courtesan who drank the poison today was close to her, as well.”
猫猫「だから、目をつむれと?そんな客なら、出入り禁止にすればいいものを」
Maomao “Dakara, meo tsumureto? Sonna kyaku-nara, deiri kinshini sureba iimono’o.”
Maomao “So, you want me to pretend I didn’t see anything? If he’s such a problem, why not just ban him?”
妓女「入れ込んだのは、あの子の方なの」
Gijo “Irekonda-nowa, ano kono ho-nano.”
Courtesan “It’s the courtesan who fell for him."
猫猫「それで心中騒ぎとなれば、娼館としては頭が痛い話ですね」
Maomao “Sorede shinju-sawagito nareba, shokanto shitewa atamaga itai hanashi desune.”
Maomao “In that case, I suppose word of a double suicide would make matters worse for the brothel.”
猫猫(やけに手厚かったのは、豪商の息子を自分の店で死なせずに済んだからか…そして…それが逆に理不尽に感じられたのだろう)
Maomao (Yakeni teatsukatta-nowa, goshono musuko’o jibunno misede shinasezuni sunda-karaka… Soshite sorega gyakuni rifujinni kanji-raretano-daro.)
Maomao (So, they served us the good snacks because we prevented a rich merchant’s son from dying on the premises. And… That must have felt unfair to her.)
猫猫「分かりました」
Maomao “Wakari-mashita.”
Maomao “I understand.”

猫猫(今日はたまたま私が家に帰っていたが、いつも買い物をしている子なら、おやじのいない時間くらい知っていたかもしれない。普通なら医者を呼ぶ状況で、わざわざ不在の薬屋を呼びに来たとすれば…あの禿、小さい割に恐ろしい…)
Maomao (Kyowa tama-tama watashiga ieni kaette-itaga, itsumo kaimono’o shite-iru konara, oyajino inai jikan kurai shitte-itakamo shirenai. Futsu-nara ishao yobu jokyode, waza-waza fuzaino kusuriyao yobini kitato sureba… Ano kamuro, chiisai warini osoroshii…)
Maomao (I just happened to be home today, but if the girl shops with us often, perhaps she knew when my dad is usually away. Normally you’d call for a doctor at a time like that, but she went out of her way to find a missing apothecary. That servant girl is scarier than she looks.”
羅門「せっかく帰ってきたというのに、何だったねぇ」
Ruomen “Sekkaku kaette kitato iunoni, nandatta-nee.
Luomen “It’s too bad your homecoming turned out this way.”
猫猫「おやじ、さっきの見せて。」
Maomao “Oyaji, sakkino misete.”
Maomao “Dad, show me that money from earlier.”
猫猫(うん、ちゃんと入ってる。案の定、口止め料まで…でもなんだか引っかかる。話からして、男はかなりしたたかだ。そんな男が、惚れた腫れたで心中など起こすものだろうか)
Maomao (Un, chanto haitteru. Annojo, kuchidome-ryo made… Demo nandaka hikkakaru. Hanashi-kara shite, otokowa kanari shitatakada. Sonna otokoga, horeta-haretade shinju-nado okosu mono-daroka.)
Maomao (Yep, all there. As expected, including hush money. Something bothers me, though. Judging from the stories, the man is pretty clever. Would someone like him join a double suicide over romance?)

猫猫(心中じゃなく殺人。しかも、殺そうとしたのは妓女のほうだ。犯行に使われたのは、タバコを漬けた毒の酒。しかし、護衛を付けるほど用心深くなっている男に、どうやって毒酒を飲ませたのか…簡単だ。毒見をして見せればいい。
妓女が無事なら、男は酒を口にする。しかし、実際に毒の酒を飲めば、女も無事では済まない。そこで道具を使った。酒は2種類、器は1つ。酒は、中身が違えば、濃さや重さが違う。重い酒の上に、軽い酒をゆっくり注げば、層ができて、見た目が良い。客を喜ばせる小ネタとして使えば…怪しまれることなく、妓女は下の層だけを麦稈で飲んでみせた。妓女も、上澄みの酒を飲んだ。死なないように、少しの量を。自分も死んでしまえば、元も子もない。男が死に、自分が生き残る計算を考えた上で、朝方に事を起こしたのだろう。そして都合よく、それを発見する人間がいた。儚げだが、それでいてしたたかだ。)
Maomao (Shinjuja naku satsujin. Shikamo, korosoto shita-nowa gijono hoda. Hankoni tsukawareta-nowa, tabako’o tsuketa dokuno sake. Maomao (Murder, not a double suicide. And it’s the courtesan who tried to kill the man, using drinks laced with tobacco poison. But the man was cautious enough to have guards around. Then, she used the wheat stalk to drink just the lower layer, without raising suspicion. Afterwards, she drank from the upper layer as well. Just a little bit, so it wouldn’t kill her. She didn’t want to end up dead herself. She did the act in the morning to increase the odds that he would die, and she would survive. And conveniently, someone came to witness it. Sokoni, neechan’eno shinpaiwa nakattano-daroka. Jitsuno aneto onaji-yoni, mata shitashii monoga shinu-towa kangae-nakattano-daroka. 猫猫(ずっと帰りたかった花街も、本質は後宮と変わらない。花園であり、鳥かごだ。みんな、閉じこもった空気に毒されていく。妓女も、周りの毒を食らうことで、甘い毒へと変わっていく。あの妓女がどうなるのかは分からない。ドラ息子が毒を飲まされたと訴えるかもしれないし、逆に娼館側が商品を台無しにされたと脅すかもしれない。…どちらでもいい。そんなことをいちいち考えていては、この街で生きていけない)

Éclaircissez vos semis de carotte. Profitez-en pour désherber ces derniers. Continuez à récolter du topinambour, du panais, du scorsonère, du salsifis, du crosne, du poireau et du raifort. Paillez toutes ces cultures afin de pouvoir continuer à récolter même s'il gèle. Si vous avez un sol lourd, décompactez-le à l'aide de votre grelinette. Au jardin d'agrément à partir de 13h30 passage en jour feuilles Si dans votre région il ne gèle pas, vous pouvez commencer à planter les arbustes et les arbres au feuillage caduc et en particulier ceux achetés à racines nues. Pour ceux qui sont persistants, patientez jusqu'à la saison printanière mars/avril hors période de gel. Ces derniers ont une meilleure reprise quand le sol s'est un peu réchauffé. Chapter 14: Kolkol
The procession trundled through the forest along the small Brocqua River, a babbling stream winding its way through the idyllic forest. The Orcs walked along the banks, some splashing in the shallow waters to cool off, while others gathered wild herbs and mushrooms from the underbrush. Children laughed and played, chasing each other and throwing sticks into the river for their wolfish pets to fetch. A few warriors practiced their combat skills, sparring with wooden weapons or engaging in friendly wrestling matches.
Suddenly, the sound of giant horse steps echoed through the trees. From around a bend in the road, a massive warhorse approached, its hooves thundering against the ground. Astride the magnificent beast was a proud Orcess, her armor adorned with human skulls on her belt and across her horse's bridle. She was tall and muscular, her eyes fierce and commanding. As she drew closer, she greeted the queen cordially, her voice strong and respectful.
"Greetings, Queen Ionia," she said with a nod. "I am Drakka Bloodbane, Bloodmaave to Warchief Grak'Thok. I have been sent ahead to guide you and your retinue to the city of Kolkol."
The journey continued with Drakka leading the way. They passed through several small Orc villages, each bustling with activity. Orcs tended to their crops, their fields lush with grok'nar and other hardy vegetables. Thralls labored under the watchful eyes of their masters, hauling water from the river or chopping wood for the fires. In one village, an Orc family gathered around a fire, roasting a freshly caught boar while their whelps played nearby, their laughter filling the air.
As they approached the motte-and-bailey fort of Kolkol, the martial prowess of Grak'Thok's Orcs was evident. Warriors drilled in the training grounds, their disciplined movements a testament to their rigorous training. The walls were lined with archers, their eyes sharp and vigilant. The great awe with which they regarded Queen Ionia and Princess Ulf was palpable; they straightened and saluted as the royal procession passed by.
The hunting lodge of Kolkol stood grand and imposing, built from sturdy logs and adorned with the trophies of countless hunts. The heads of great beasts, both familiar and exotic, lined the walls, their eyes forever staring into the room. Ionia and Ulf grinned to themselves, appreciating the traditional way of life the Orcs lived here. This was a land where strength and skill were revered above all else.
With anticipation, Ionia and Ulf dismounted and headed into the lodge to meet Warchief Grak'Thok. The interior was warm and inviting, filled with the scent of roasting meat and the sound of hearty laughter. Grak'Thok awaited them near the grand hearth, a broad smile on his face and a goblet of bloodgrog in his hand as he led them inside.
The interior of the Orc hunting lodge of Kolkol was a grand, lively scene. The great hall was alive with the sounds of Orcs—boisterous laughter, the clatter of wooden mugs, and the games of Orc whelps echoing off the log walls. Warchief Grak'Thok's many wives conversed in clusters, their dialogue a blend of shared stories and hearty laughs. A large central fire roared in the heart of the lodge, casting a warm, flickering light across the room. Over the fire, raw meat roasted on a spit, its mouthwatering aroma filling the air.
The interior of the hunting lodge in Kolkol buzzed with lively conversation. Grak’Thok’s many wives gathered around the large central fire, their voices mingling with the sounds of whelps playing games and the occasional crackle from the spit where raw meat roasted.
One of the wives leaned in closer to the group, a proud smile on her face. "Did you hear? Gromluk took down a boar twice his size yesterday. The boy’s got his father’s strength!"
Another wife nodded, her eyes twinkling. "Of course, he does. It runs in the family. Speaking of which, our little Zarga is showing promise with the axe. She nearly took off her tutor’s ear!"
Laughter rippled through the group. "Ha! That’s nothing," chimed in a third wife. "My daughter challenged the blacksmith’s apprentice to a duel. She won, and now the poor boy follows her around like a lost puppy."
"I hope she’s not too hard on him," another wife commented, shaking her head. "We don’t want the apprentices all scared off. We need them for our weapons!"
"Speaking of weapons," said a fifth wife, a hint of pride in her voice, "have you seen the new armor Zulga’s been working on? She’s outdone herself this time."
"Oh, it’s magnificent!" a sixth wife exclaimed. "I’m sure the Warchief will be pleased. Our warriors will be the envy of all warbands."
"Indeed," agreed a seventh wife. "And have you noticed how Atlug's been getting better with that lute of his? He’s becoming quite the bard."
"It’s a good thing, too," the eighth wife added. "The tales he sings of our family’s glory will inspire future generations. And his voice isn’t bad to listen to after a long day."
"Yes, but I do wish he’d focus more on his swordsmanship," the first wife said, a hint of concern in her voice. "Music is fine, but it won’t save him in battle."
"Balance, sister," the third wife interjected gently. "Balance. Even the Warchief sees the value in diversifying our strengths."
"True," the second wife mused. "Speaking of balance, who’s taking care of the whelps while we’re all here chattering away?"
"Don’t worry," the fourth wife reassured them. "I left them with our eldest. They’re in good hands. She’s already proven she can handle them."
"Good," the sixth wife said, settling back into her seat. "Because I’d rather be here with you all, enjoying this feast and the fire, than chasing after them right now."
"Agreed," the eighth wife nodded. "Let's enjoy the evening while we can. Tomorrow, we can go back to our usual chaos."
As they laughed and continued their conversation, the warmth of the fire and the camaraderie among them filled the lodge with a sense of family and strength that was the heart of the warband.
Grak'Thok stood near the fire, his booming voice welcoming the new arrivals. "Welcome, Queen Ionia and Princess Ulf! It's been too long since we've had such esteemed guests in our halls."
Beside him stood his Soulmaave wife, Zulga Ironheart. She was a formidable Orcess with broad shoulders and a muscular build, her skin adorned with intricate tattoos that told tales of battle and honor. Her eyes were sharp and observant, and her presence exuded strength and authority.
By the fire, a rotund but powerful Orc strummed a lute, serenading several blushing Orcish maidens who giggled at his every word. Grak'Thok chuckled and commanded, "Atlug, rise and greet our guests properly."
Atlug the Bard stood up, his long black hair swept back into a ponytail that glistened in the firelight. His gleaming tusks and powerful arms spoke of his prowess, not just as a musician but as a warrior as well. The lute he carried was a fine instrument, its craftsmanship evident, but the calluses on his hands and the sword at his side revealed his dual talents.
With a pompous air and a wink, Atlug said, "Ah, Princess Ulf, Queen Ionia, you honor us with your presence. Fear not, for I shall make you the envy of all Orcish maidens throughout the Domination with my songs and tales."
Ulf frowned at his rather un-Orky career path, but Ionia clapped appreciatively. "Part of the Orc transformation is the expansion of our society into the finer things than just combat. Well done, Atlug."
Atlug smiled broadly. "I swear it, Princess Ulf, you will be a muse in my grand epic. Your deeds will inspire Orcs across the Domination."
Ulf groaned inwardly but couldn't help managing a small smile at his enthusiasm. The combination of traditional Orc strength and newfound cultural pursuits was both intriguing and somewhat amusing to her.
As the lively conversations of Grak'Thok's wives continued around the central fire, Ionia clapped her hands, commanding attention. The room fell silent, all eyes turning to the queen. She gestured towards Atlug, her voice clear and authoritative. "Atlug, sing us a song. Show us your worth."
Atlug, standing with his lute in hand, gave a nod and a charming smile. His long black hair was swept back into a ponytail, and his powerful arms strummed the strings of his finely crafted instrument. He began to sing, his voice resonating through the lodge, rich and melodic.
"From the mountains high to the valleys low,
An orcish queen with strength aglow,
Ionia reigns with wisdom and might,
Her leadership our guiding light.
In battles fierce and lands afar,
Her presence shines, our northern star,
With every step, she leads the way,
In MOG's name, we proudly sway.
And by her side, a princess bold,
Ulf, with beauty pure as gold,
Her eyes, like rubies, bright and keen,
Her spirit strong, a future queen.
She rides upon her warsteed grand,
A warrior’s heart, with sword in hand,
Her courage fierce, her honor true,
A beacon bright for me and you.
Oh, Ionia, queen so great,
Our hearts and lives upon your fate,
And Ulf, our hope, our pride,
In your reign, we shall abide.
Together, strong, both queen and heir,
In unity beyond compare,
We'll conquer lands, we'll claim our due,
With Ionia and Ulf, we'll see it through."
Atlug ended his song with a dramatic flourish, his fingers dancing over the lute's strings. The final notes lingered in the air, and the room erupted into applause and cheers. Ionia, clearly delighted, stood and approached Atlug, a warm smile on her face.
"Well done, Atlug," she declared. "Your song has pleased us greatly. You are indeed worthy. Welcome to our group."
The room buzzed with approval, and Atlug bowed deeply, his eyes twinkling with satisfaction. Ulf, though skeptical at first, couldn't help but smile at the genuine admiration from those around them. On the other hand, there are such stories as that in the last issue of Commonweal about the de Giorgio strike in the long central valley of California, of fifty-eight thousand acres owned by one family, of two thousand employees, of horrible living conditions, poor wages, forced idleness, “times of repose” between crops, when machines are cared for but not men, women, and children. The Grapes of Wrath pattern is here, is becoming an accepted pattern. Assembly-line production in the factory and mass production on the land are part of a social order accepted by the great mass of our Catholics, priests and people [alike]. Even when they admit it is bad, they say, “What can we do?” And the result is palliatives, taking care of the wrecks of the social order, rather than changing it so that there would not be quite so many broken homes, orphaned children, delinquents, industrial accidents, so much destitution in general. Palliatives, when what we need is a revolution, beginning now. Each one of us can help start it. It is no use talking about how bored we are with the word. Let us not be escapists but admit that it is upon us. We are going to have it imposed upon us, or we are going to make our own. If we don’t do something about it, the world may well say, “Why bring children into the world, the world being what it is?” We bring them into it and start giving them a vision of an integrated life so that they too can start fighting. This fighting for a cause is part of the zest of life. Father Damasus said once at one of our retreats that people seemed to have lost that zest for life, that appreciation of the value of life, the gift of life. It is a fundamental thing. Helene Isvolsky, in a lecture on Dostoyevsky at the Catholic Worker House last month, said that he was marked by that love for life. He had almost been shot once. He had been lined up with other prisoners and all but lost his life. From then on he had such a love for life that it glowed forth in all his writings. It is what marks the writings of Thomas Wolfe, whose writing was a Niagara. But how can one have a zest for life under such conditions as those we live in at 115 Mott Street? How can that laundry worker down the street, working in his steamy hell of a basement all day, wake each morning to a zest for life? In the city, very often one lives in one’s writing. Writing is not an overflow of life, a result of living intensely. To live in Newburgh, on the farm, to be arranging retreats, to be making bread and butter, taking care of and feeding children there, washing and carding wool, gathering herbs and salads and flowers – all these things are so good and beautiful that one does not want to take time to write except that one has to share them, and not just the knowledge of them, but how to start to achieve them. The whole retreat movement is to teach people to “meditate in their hearts,” to start to think of these things, to make a beginning, to go out and start to love God in all the little things of every day, to so make one’s life and one’s children’s life a sample of heaven, a beginning of heaven.

Here’s a probable history of the familiar “witches hat”
Linda of Broadway Catering & Events of Sonoma did something “witchy” for this year. She dressed up in the full traditional witches costume while going shopping at Adobe Pharmacy (formerly Pharmica) on West Napa Street not far from the historic plaza.
Speaking of history, the traditional witches attire seen here has been stylized over the years. But to trace all the things we associate with witches and witchcraft is both complicated and surprising.
To keep it simple for now, let’s just look at the so-called conical or “pointed” cylinder hat. Briefly going over historical data presentations by scholar, Elaine Pagels, historian Amelia Mott Gummere and history writer Janice Formichella, it seems to this reporter that much attributed to witches was done so to discredit or demonize a particular person or a group of people/women.
With that said, the pointed hat has several origins. also it must be noted such a style of hat has been worn by both women and men, in many cultures. It’s all simply a matter of context or rather in the case of women accused of witchcraft, their attire being taken out of context.
Big hats whether tall or wide have always existed and are something of distinction. For example, a mother of the bride (especially in Britain) at a wedding wears the best hat; men in the late 19th Century to the 20th Century wore top hats.
President Lincoln usually wore what was then known as a “stovepipe hat,” (which some consider the precursor to the ‘top hat’ made famous in the movies by dancer Fred Astaire), etc. So the idea of a tall hat has been in existence for centuries. It seems when status and power is involved that’s when the tall hat (be it pointed or cylinder) gets vilified.
In her book about the history of The Quakers, Gummere writes: “Almost all of the earliest prints of the Quaker women who preach show them dressed in this cap and hat,” she noted. “It is impossible, in examining any of these pictures, to avoid the suggestion that here is the hat of the conventional witch of our childhood."
Dress & clothing historian Abby Cox mentions. “Throughout most of the 17th century, women of all social classes wore tall, black, wool felt hats.”
“This was considered normal fashion at the time,” she said. Recognizing the correlation, she explained. “These wide-brimmed, black, conical hats peaked in popularity in the mid-1600s, which also happened to be when a new Christian denomination known as the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, was founded in England.”
And as is now well-known, The Puritans who later settled in America had little to no tolerance for any other expression of Christianity but their own. As established religious scholar Elaine Pagels noted “the fact that women could have power (in such a society as The Puritans) was disturbing if not reprehensible.”
Quakers believed in equality among men and women especially with respect to leadership in their church. And, it is hypothesized that this criticism of Quaker women having leadership was one of the reasons for depicting “witches” in the general attire of Quaker women.
Another explanation comes from historical writer Janice Formichella. As she believes, “My vote for the origin of this spooky accessory is that it relates directly to the hats worn by female beer brewers (also known as alewives) in medieval times. Trying to stand out in crowded markets, they would wear tall, pointed hats.“
Interestingly if so, is that where the term “witches brew” comes from? Formichella notes further. “Such women were also associated with having a knowledge of herbs and brewing concoctions at home. My theory is that when depictions of witches began to skyrocket a short time later, it was an easy image to conjure up (pun intended).“
Pointing to examples found in Woodcuts from the 18th century, Formichella reasons, “these illustrations show that it was an ingrained link by then, and would remain to this day.”
How all the other elements of a witch’s costume and props came into accepted folklore is for another article and more research. But for now, concerning the recognizable conical, pointed “witches hat” I will conclude with what Formichella has to say about it.
“I believe that the association with female brewers is also the strongest as only a relatively short time later witches were regularly depicted in similar hats.”

Day one: Welcome to Vietnam
Well it's time once again for the two of us to recap our days. We lifted our heads to a quiet morning, hearing the sounds of traffic on the street below. Breakfast was served in the hotel. Fried eggs for Rachel. Beef Pho for Alex. It was 8:00 a.m. Vietnamese coffee was strong, resembling a French Roast with notes of chocolate. It would not be his last caffeinated beverage.
The morning began with a brief excursion around the Old Quarter. Crowds were small, and traffic was mild. We started with the Dong Xuan Market, located not far from the hotel, although we didn't buy anything. We stopped into a small, yet ancient temple: Bach Ma, dating back about a thousand years. We had to return to our hotel, as we had a date with Chris, our guide on an excellent street food tour.
Chris led us through back alleys and open streets, along the top of Hoan Kiem Lake and across busy intersections. We are plentiful and in excess.
The "ultimate menu" as he called it, consisted of:
1) Spring Rolls with pork, petite, steaming hot and crispy.
2) Dried beef salad - flavorful jerky over shredded green papaya, served over a seasoned fish sauce.
3) Summer rolls - an experiential make-your-own wrap filled with mango, lettuce, herbs, pork, and rice noodles. Dipped in peanut sauce.
4) Freshly made juice at a local stall in one of the many city alleys. The citrus of the pomelo and pineapple reminded us of the hot spring rolls, which burned the roof of our mouths earlier.
5) Bún Cha - one of Hanoi's local favorites. Grilled pork and noodles mixed in sauce. Garlic was added by the fistful. Thai chilis by the fingerful.
6) Banh Mi - you already know what it is, and yeah, it was good.
7) Sticky rice with coconut ice cream - sweet and delicious.
8) Egg coffee and ginger tea. The egg coffee was a thick, flavorful cappuccino-style drink. The tea was spicy.
It was quite some feast, and we weren't hungry for the rest of the day, if you can believe it. But the sun had not yet set and we had more to see. So we hopped into a taxi and rode down to visit the Temple of Literature, an ancient school, honoring the teachings of Confucius. We got there not long before it closed, so we had to rush a little though the meditative gardens, but at least we got to see the old texts on display, including woodblock prints and old, old books. Alex sat in one of their small hits and wrote for a moment in his planner.
We had one more stop, as exhaustion and jet-lag kicked in and that was to visit the railroad street. Someone apparently had the great idea to build a bunch of cafes and bars close to railroad tracks, so that you could pretty much touch the train as it passed while also holding onto a bottle of beer. No trains came while we waited, but perhaps the quiet was what we needed as the sun went down and our eyes grew heavy. Total distance walked: over nine miles.
Tomorrow, we have another early start. This time we take a bus to Ninh Binh, Vietnam's ancient capital. We'll be back in Hanoi for dinner.
Rachel: we need to elaborate on our food stops. The people want to know!
Alex: I honestly just copy-pasted what our guide did. Wasn't Chris the best?
R: Yes. And I particularly liked that giving food tours is his career passion and the conversations we had about that work being his true calling. You can take the girl away from work but that doesn't mean she'll stop thinking about people's career happiness and satisfaction.
A: Well, we made it to Vietnam. What surprised you the most about this country so far?
R: Honestly, it's different from what people had told me. I feel like a lot of Hanoi reminds me of certain neighborhoods in New York.
A: Yeah the Old Quarter, which we didn't really leave, is like if every street was Mott Street in Chinatown. Traffic is chaotic. Motorbikes going every direction. Delicious food on every corner. Outside, it's apparently very different and quite modern as well, but I liked this city so far. Of course the food was great.
R: Agreed. I think my favorite meal was the summer roll platter. Not only was it interactive (assemble your own roll) but it had every contrasting texture and flavor combined in a single bite.
A: I might say the summer roll was my favorite of the tour. I also really like pho for breakfast but who doesn't?
R: I think I was most surprised by the dried beef salad, a close second for me. The beef jerky with the really fresh shredded green papaya, soaked in fish sauce, was a perfect contrast to the fried spring roll we had just earlier.
A: I drank a lot of coffee today.
R: Are you going to sleep tonight?
A: Yeah I'm pretty jet lagged. How about you?
R: I felt a little like a walking zombie for the last hour of our tour
A: Well if we're tired tomorrow we have a bus ride to sleep. I think that'll be helpful.
R: Day one was a huge success. My feet are tired. My eyes are tired. But my heart is full.
A: So are our stomachs.

La culture de la salade frisée
présentation
Cette salade n'est pas du tout exigeante sur la nature du sol. Par contre, elle a du mal à supporter le froid et les excès d'humidité au collet. Malgré qu'elle s'adapte à la plupart des sols, elle préfère que ce dernier soit riche en matières organiques très décomposées. Elle fait partie de la grande famille des asteracées. Son nom scientifique est Cichorium endivia. Vous pouvez constater que dans son nom latin on retrouve le mot endiva (endive en français). En fait, la salade frisée est une sous-espèce de l'endive. Sa hauteur ira de 20 à 30 centimètres.
culture
La salade frisée se sème pendant la saison estivale et éventuellement à la saison automnale. Semez-la en ligne de façon assez claire afin de limiter l'éclaircissage. Quand le semis a levé, éclaircissez à une bonne vingtaine de centimètres. Si vous n'avez pas de jardin, vous pouvez la cultiver en potée sur votre terrasse ou sur votre balcon. Échelonnez vos semis afin d'avoir des salades frisées pendant une bonne période. si vous ne voulez pas effectuer votre semis vous même, vous pouvez acheter des plants vendus en petites mottes dans la plupart des jardineries. Dans ce cas, espacez également chaque sujet d'une bonne vingtaine de centimètres. Évitez de trop en planter en une seule fois. Échelonnez vos plantations afin de mieux étaler vos récoltes. Quand les salades frisées sont suffisamment développées, il faut vous munir de raphia afin de les attacher pour les faire blanchir. Pour cela, relevez les feuilles et entourez-les d'un morceau de raphia de telle manière que les feuilles convergent vers le cœur. Et pour terminer, couvrez-les soit avec des pots en terre cuite ou bien avec des cloches opaques. Là aussi, je vous conseille de les faire blanchir au fur et à mesure de vos besoins. En règle générale le blanchiment de vos salades frisées dure 10/15 jours. A noter que certaines variétés blanchissent toutes seules. Si vous constatez que le sol est trop sec, arrosez-les. Pour récolter vos frisées quand elles ont bien blanchie, coupez-les au ras du collet. Il est possible de récolter des salades frisées tout au long de l'année même pendant la saison hivernale si vous les protégez du froid. Il faut compter six semaines environ après le semis pour pouvoir récolter vos salades frisées.
entretien
L'entretien de la salade frisée et d'ailleurs de toutes les salades est modéré Contentez-vous de désherber manuellement l'emplacement. Arrosez-les surtout pendant les périodes chaudes de la saison estivale. Paillez-les. ça permettra de diminuer les apports d'eau. De temps en temps, binez-les afin de limiter le développement des herbes qui peuvent se développer parmi vos salades frisées.
parasites & maladies
La salade frisée ne connait pas de maladies. Par contre, faites attention à nos amies les limaces qui sont très friandes des jeunes sujets.
multiplication
