This is going to be very long and sound a little crazy at first, and maybe a little mean but please hear me out…
I’m convinced that Taylor sometimes purposefully includes one line or multiple lines of poorly written or clunky lyrics in specific songs to make a point.
We all have seen some version of this with bearding songs like London Boy, a simple bop whose lyrics were immediately detected as sounding disingenuous, even with the general population (the locations she was signing about were the most touristy and too far away from each other to visit on the same day, etc, basically implying that she doesn’t actually have a long term local bf there that she spends a bunch of time with exploring the city with, etc).
But just like everything else on the album, I think she’s doing maybe a more in your face version of that. No holds barred.
So High School is an obvious example of this, with all of the early 2000’s hs imagery, she seems pretty blatantly to be mocking the idea the public has of her “living out every American girl’s high school fantasy” of dating the tall popular football player. With lyrics like “touch me while your friends play grand theft auto” (barf), etc, shes being clear enough that this is not a serious song.
This is the possibly controversial part, but I’m so curious to see what others think about this - I think another iteration of this on this album is the title track, The Tortured Poets Department. Hear me out.
(First, I want to reassure you that there are lines in this song that I really like and think are well written, like: “you’re in self-sabotage mode/throwing spikes down on the road” and “but you awaken with dread/pounding nails in your head/but I’ve read this one/where you come undone/I chose this cyclone with you”. And I fully agree with the idea that these sentiments are from Karlie’s perspective. Basically, when you take out the chunks I’m about to talk about this song makes way more sense and has a beautiful sentiment of undying love behind it - which makes the following parts stick out that much more!)
The first time I listened through the album, and this was the second song, I got terrified because I didn’t understand its place in the whole narrative and when I heard the first clunky line “scratch your head like a tattooed golden retriever” I got the ick. Then the bridge with no structure and no wit and no clever turns of phrase, no metaphor, just “you put my ring on the finger people put wedding rings on” and “that was the closest I’ve ever been to my heart exploding”. So over simplified and cheesy, and doesn’t sound anything like her writing, especially the caliber of her recent lyrics
I know art is largely subjective, but I insist there is no way that the same person who wrote Cowboy Like Me wrote these lines into her title track if she didn’t have a reason and a point to make. To make it clear that this isn’t a matter of genre personal taste, because I know CLM is a very specific sound and a style that music snobs often take more seriously - I love SO many of her candy pop bangers, they are infinitely more clever, articulate, and overall works of art by a true wordsmith than this. Karma, The Very First Night, etc are all a master classes in clever words and tight writing being tucked into an “unserious” pop song.
The lyrics I cited above to me sound like what haters believe her writing sounds like, even fans who make little jokey TikTok’s about her and make up a spoofy something to sing while in character - that’s what these lyrics sound like.
Im worried im being too harsh, but please stay with me because the more I think about the more genius I think it actually is.
In the context of the themes of rest of the album, (her being trapped, miserable, manipulated, ready to burn it all down, screaming to be seen) this theory became clear to me. I think she’s leaning into her public persona (in more ways than one, we’ve already seen it with the stunting), in a way setting a “trap” for her fans and the public, that will essentially call them all out on how they ignored the real her in favor of her pr narrative, making the album about paternity tests, etc, all of which I’m guessing will become very clear in retrospect, possibly after she comes out? (Of course it’s already clear to us now, which is another purpose of the beard songs including clunky writing - to signal to us that these are not serious and that she knows that we know that she knows (like Phoebe on friends lol))
Ultimately, this is (along with So Highschool) a classic beard song. When she writes in this voice, she embodies the most extreme versions of her public persona, not just the one she has cultivated on purpose, but also the one that people have of her that don’t know her (as she did in Blank Space), including those that don’t take her seriously - because her identity as a boy crazy psycho ex girlfriend is directly tied to people dismissing her art as vapid because, they’ve only ever heard her singles, they don’t know the full her.
Tumblr media
That voice is the straightest, the most boy crazy, the most one note, and sometimes the most unsophisticated writer version of her that people have in their minds, including her fans - the fans that refuse to see her as a whole person, the real, that believe she is head over heals for big football boy, that believe “he knows how to ball, I know Aristotle” is a romantic line about how opposites attract, the fans that say they don’t “get” some of her most beautiful and well-written songs, the fans that don’t see her and haven’t been seeing her.
They didn’t see giant Taylor on the eras tour, they refuse to see all of her queer signaling, etc, and I think she’s making the bearding songs obvious to underscore the difference between her Taylor(TM) and Taylor(person) personas.
She knows that despite the fact that the lyrics don’t even come close to measuring up to the rest of the album, the public, and many of her fans, will make this song one of the most listened to simply because they are looking for evidence of her relationships from the past year. We’ve all commented on how insane it is that this layered, complex, devastating album is being reduced to the usual paternity tests. This is currently one of the top songs precisely because it is “about Matty”. And of course, So High School is one of the tops songs along with it because it’s “about Travis”.
Tumblr media
The juxtaposition of the bearding songs alongside her beautifully written poetry of Prophecy, Peter, Whose Afraid of Little Old Me, Cassandra, How did it end, The Albatross, etc mirrors the juxtaposition of her two selves during the Midnights era.
She has proven the point that if they think she wrote every line of this song completely in earnest, then they see her largely no differently than her haters do, as a subpar writer who writes absurdly cheesy love songs praising trashy to mediocre, problematic men. By eating it up they tell her that’s what she’s good for, for being the subject of tabloids and warring fans who make this entire album about two (purposefully) mediocre songs and the men who “inspired” them.
She has proven her point - that a subset of her fans will be distracted by a lesser song simply because they think it’s about one of the greasy men that’s she been seen holding hands with. That they will ignore once again all of her pleas to be seen, that she’s in pain and caged, and has been driven insane by their willful ignorance. That they don’t appreciate her full potential and talent, that they don’t even see it, and just want to be confirmed in their ideation of her.
Tumblr media
This song is essentially the “forget him(her)” pill at the beginning of the fortnight mv, but it’s a sedative for the fans, who are addicted to her straight narrative. Similar to Willow’s 13 chants of “that’s my man” that started off evermore, casting a spell of heteronormativity over everyone who wanted it, so that they could choose to just completely ignore the following 14 gayest songs ever written. Don’t pay no mind to her singing directly about women with zero male perspective - she said “that’s my man!” We’re good! She’s still straight!
Tumblr media
Taylor in the fortnight mv had to a take a sedative to be able to go into the next room and write her bearding songs - ie she self medicates to deal with keeping up the straight persona and to get through having to release dumbed down songs to feed the masses. (I also see the pill as something forced on her, I think it represents both layers)
From the first time I watched the music video I thought the writing Taylor looked so miserable and the bearding songs are why.
Tumblr media
In this room she’s trapped, churning out the songs that her fans expect of her, the songs that make her team money, the songs that make her money, but that she has to compromise her truth to create.
But when she frees herself she’ll burn the stories that weren’t true, the filler that doesn’t represent her.
I’m curious to hear other’s thoughts on this - have you ever felt like Taylor purposefully inserts off-sounding lyrics that are written in a different voice to make a point?
I want to reiterate that it’s not the entirety of either song that I think is terrible, I genuinely love bopping along to both So High School and TTPD (track). Like I said above, when you remove the clunky lines from ttpd (track), the song has another layer and likely gives voice to some Karlie insight that is beautiful and tragically profound. It’s the red herrings, the pieces specifically meant to tie this song to a bearding narrative, that I’m dissing, and the only reason they are suspicious in the first place is because I know how gifted Taylor is with the written word.
Taylor is such a skilled writer that she can embody the voice of the bad writer that dismissive ignorant idiots believe her to be, just to make a point!
I even wonder if maybe there is a second version of this song locked away in one of those drawers in the fortnight writing room that leaves out the red herrings and is a thousand times better than the bearding version we got.
I hope one day we get to hear it.

Homecoming [Jake Seresin x Reader] Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Summary: Returning home to California after six years abroad in England, you found everything has changed. Jake Seresin, your father's former college roommate and lifelong best friend, is now a widower and has purchased a new vineyard in Montecito, only a few miles from your childhood home. Your parents’ marriage is on the rocks, your brother is struggling with what to do with his life, and you’ve grown up and are starting your own counseling practice. So what happens when you find yourself falling for the man your father calls his best friend? And worse, what happens when your parents find out he’s falling for you, too?
Pairing: Jake Seresin x Reader
Warnings: Age gap, eventual smut, cursing, alcohol
Word count: 2.2 K
Chapter overview: Y/N starts her first day at work at Jake's vineyard
Author's note: This fic references a significant age gap, as reader is the child of Jake's best friend. However, she's in her mid-twenties, and he's been only a small part of her life to this point as he spent the majority of his time traveling with his late wife. This fic does not depict grooming, but if you are concerned with any of the themes please read at your own risk.
Masterlist here
Colin, despite being eleven months and five days older than you, was your first patient. Although neither of you realized it at the time.
You remembered it clearly. The two of you sitting on the edge of the pool, toes swinging in the water, the sun glinting off the surface and bursting into a million shards of light across the tile bottom.
“I’m mad,” he said.
You looked over but his eyes were trained on his feet, thrashing in the chlorinated pool. “Why?” you asked.
He shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“Is it because of mom?” you asked. Another head shake. “Is it dad?” There was a pause. You sensed a shift in his demeanor, even at eight years old. You pushed. “He thinks you’ll like it. Make friends.”
Colin turned to you, his shaggy hair covering one eye. “I have friends.”
“I don’t count.”
“You might like it,” you whispered. “Camp is fun.”
“Cowboy camp,” he replied, frowning.
“Horses are cool.”
“You think that because you’re a girl.”
Your eyebrows knitted together. “At least dad is letting you go to camp.” You pulled your legs out of the water. “He won’t even let me out of his sight.”
Colin’s small shoulders sagged. “That’s because he loves you more.”
Your mouth dropped open, but nothing came out. Just air, filling your lungs, mounting so much pressure in your chest you were scared to let it out, lest you collapse. Colin’s back stayed turned away from you.
And then it was over. And you went inside, wet legs sticking to the edges of your capri pants.
***
“What do I wear?” you asked your mom, standing in front of your open closet. Everything in it felt wrong. The dresses you wore to the nightclubs in Berlin, the jeans that spent nights at the pub, your old high school wardrobe that was seriously dated. God, you needed new clothes. Something that said young professional, but not in a sad way.
“I have no idea, dear.” Your mother picked up a lace thong that you had tossed on the bed and frowned. “I’ve never been to the vineyard.”
“What?” You swiveled around. “You’re kidding.”
“Your father is the one who goes,” she replied with a shrug. “He and Jake have always been closer.”
It was true. Jake and your father had been college roommates at USC, randomly paired together freshman year. They couldn’t have been more different, but somehow they made it work.
You grabbed a blue dress with a tie in the middle and turned back toward your mother. There was something about her gaze, the way she was looking out the window. “Mom?” you asked. “Everything OK?”
“Of course,” she replied instantly, but her voice caught at the end, a small lift that set off a warning sign in the back of your brain.
You frowned. “Alright. Well, I’ll see you guys tonight at dinner?”
She stood up, smoothing her hands over her linen pants. “Have a good first day.”
You turned toward the mirror, angling the dress over your body before tossing it on the bed. You couldn’t afford to fuck this up. It wasn’t just that you owed it to Jake. You owed it to yourself to show up and prove that you could be successful outside of an academic environment.
***
Thirty minutes later, you stepped through the vineyard doors. The sound of your heeled boots echoed in the vast entryway. “Jake?”
“Sparky.” Jake appeared from your left, wiping his hands on a towel that he then slung over his shoulder. You breathed a sigh of relief. He was wearing a pair of jeans and a loosely buttoned shirt, a pair of loafers rounding out the look. You sent up a silent prayer that you had also worn jeans, albeit a tight pair with a slight flare, and a silk sleeveless turtleneck. “Ready to meet the crew?”
You nodded. Jake spent the next hour introducing you to everyone, from the waitstaff for the tasting room to the food engineers helping to bottle and test the wine, and the farmer he had on staff to cultivate the small garden where they grew fresh vegetables to include in charcuterie plates.
“Your job is to be the puppet master,” Jake said as the two of you emerged back onto the main floor. “There’s two hostesses. If they’re both gone, you can man the front table. At the end of the day, you and I will sit down and look at the books and go over how things went and where we need to make changes.”
A silent scream rose in your throat. This was too laissez faire for your taste. You needed rules, regime.
Jake grinned, putting one hand on your upper arm. His touch was warm, inviting. Once again, you looked down at his bare ring finger and felt a longing for Jenny. “You’ll do great,” he said. “Trust me, you’ll know what to do. It’s intuitive.”
“Where will you be?” you asked. “If I need you.”
“You won’t need me,” Jake asserted. “But if you do, I’m around.”
“Helpful.”
Jake raised an eyebrow. “Is that how you talk to all your bosses?”
You flushed. “Oh my God, I’m sorry, I didn’t even–”
He laughed. “It’s OK, Y/N. I know it’s a weird dynamic, because we know each other. I don’t expect you to call me Mr. Seresin or anything like that. I trust you, and that’s why I’m giving you free reign of the place.”
The blush was still inching down your neck. You nodded, gulping. Jake reached out, squeezing your upper arm gently. “I’ll be in my office, alright?”
Jake disappeared down the staircase and you swiveled around, nerves worming their way through your body. Just as you were about to flee into a corner, the doors swung open and a young couple stepped up to the podium.
“Hi, we’re the Kellers,” the woman said. “We had a one o’clock reservation?”
Jake and Amy, the host, had shown you how to use the tablet. Your fingers shook as you pressed buttons on the screen, pulling up the reservation, a sigh of relief bubbling in your throat as you found their names. Ethan and Whitney Keller.
They sounded as white as they looked.
You looked up, smiling. “Of course, Mr. and Mrs. Keller. If you’ll please follow me.”
Jake had been right. A part of you cursed him a little. It came naturally. Floating around, asking people how they were, chatting lightly about the wine. All those years in Europe had done nothing if not given you a taste for alcohol.
Plus, you liked talking to people. You always had. You listened and gave them thoughtful responses. You could read people – if there was tension, if someone in a group felt left out, if they wanted to be left alone.
It was almost like therapy. With wine. For a split second you wondered if you could get a liquor license for your clinic before realizing that was an insane thought.
At the end of the day, once all the tables were wiped and the floor was mopped, the wine was put away and the rest of the staff had gone home, you found yourself outside on the bench at the edge of the patio, overlooking the vineyards, a small tree above you gently blocking the setting sun.
“Can I join you?”
You turned just as Jake slid into the spot next to you on the bench.
“You were amazing,” Jake said.
A blush crept up around your cheeks. “Thank you.”
He threaded one arm against the back of the bench, behind your head and shoulders. It was casual, not cloying or weird at all. His scent, that familiar crushed stone fruit smell, wafted over you as the soft breeze carried your scents together, melding them in the air.
“Do you have dinner plans?”
You thought about your parents, sitting at home in the Spanish Villa they had built when you were three. About Colin, who you still had barely seen since you returned from London.
“I’m free.”
“Good.” Jake stood up and wiped his hands on his jeans. “I’ll make you dinner. Hugo will be excited to see you. And we can taste the new crop of wine.”
As you watched Jake walk back up the hill toward the building, a strange sensation built in your stomach. For the first time ever, you realized that Jake Seresin was more than just a family friend.
***
“It’s hot.”
“Ow, ow, ow!”
Jake laughed as you let your mouth hang open, pasta tumbling back onto the plate. You closed your mouth, wiping it with a napkin. “OK, ew, sorry you had to see that.”
“I warned you,” he replied, twirling a fork in his bowl of creamy vodka pasta. “You just don’t listen. You never have.”
“That’s not fair,” you said, breaking off a piece of bread and sliding your hand down to your thigh, feeding Hugo under the table. He greedily chomped at the bread, and you wiped your fingertips on your thigh.
“I saw that,” Jake countered and you laughed. “Don’t spoil him too much or he’s going to stop liking me and he’ll only want you.”
“That’s the plan,” you replied, patting the Golden’s head.
Talking to Jake was easy. It wasn’t until the two of you sat down to dinner that you realized in all the years you had known him, Jake and Jenny flitting in and out of your life as they returned or started a new global trek, you had only limited interactions with Jake.
Before taking the job at the vineyard, you had only one distinct memory of Jake Seresin. On your nineteenth birthday, right before you left for London after your gap year, Jake and Jenny had been staying at your parent’s house. After dinner, as everyone sat around with glasses of champagne, Jake handed you a gift, wrapped in silver paper.
Inside was a delicate gold necklace with a pearl dangling off the edge. You looked up in surprise.
He smiled. “I saw it when we were in Vietnam and had to get it for you.”
After dinner, as Jake cleared the table and you sat on the floor playing with Hugo, you reached up and touched the pearl necklace underneath your turtleneck collar. It was hidden, but it was there.
“Drink?” Jake asked, emerging with a bottle and two glasses.
“Do you ever get tired of wine?” you asked, standing up and stretching, the hem of your shirt coming untucked for a moment and you reached back down, sticking it into the top of your jeans.
“Never.” He grinned, pouring the dark red wine into a glass and handing it to you as you settled onto the couch. Jake poured himself a glass, sitting in a wingback chair near the fireplace.
“How are you?” you asked quietly. On the mantle was a picture of Jenny. She had been beautiful. Dark hair, piercing green eyes. A laugh that could fill a room.
Jake stilled. Hugo sensed it because he left his place at your feet and made his way to Jake, nudging his head against Jake’s thigh. “It’s quiet,” he replied after a moment. “Being alone.”
“How so?”
“Leaves you alone with your thoughts,” Jake said. “A good thing, and a bad thing.”
“I understand,” you whispered.
Jake cocked his head to one side. “Do I need to pay you for this?” he joked.
You hid your face behind your wine glass. “Sorry, force of habit.” There was a pause. Then, “Have you, um, dated? Since?”
“A few dates, yeah. But everyone I met, they just didn’t hold up to her.”
“I’m sorry.”
“She loved you,” Jake said. “That time that we came to see you in London and the two of you went shopping at Harrods? She came back to the hotel practically giddy. Said that even though the two of you had an age difference, she felt like you were a friend she could count on.”
“I loved her, too,” you replied, a tear forming in the corner of your eye. “I’m so sorry I didn’t make it back for the funeral.”
Jake shook his head. “Really, don’t worry about it. Jenny wasn’t one for funerals. Neither am I, for the record. If it ever comes to that.”
“It won’t,” you replied instantly. “Jake Seresin? You’re unstoppable.”
“So was she,” he said softly. “Life happens, Y/N. You can’t predict it. You just have to keep going and hope that you find something else that makes you happy.”
“Have you?” you asked. “Found something else that makes you happy?”
“I’m working on it.”

Thinking about Bradley Bradshaw's birthdays over the years...
I think he would remember one birthday before Goose died... idk if one really remembers their second birthday, but I think he would have something. Maybe not the whole party, but something. A flash of his Momma and Daddy and Uncle Mav singing him happy birthday, wearing giant sparkly top hats to go with the magician theme.
After Goose died, Carole and Mav would have started going All Out. Every year there's a huge party with whatever theme Bradley chooses. They invite his whole class from day care, and then Pre-K, and the kids in his class once he starts school. There's a dinosaur party where Uncle Mav and Co. bury "fossils" in the yard for him and his friends to find, and a cowboy party where they do pony rides. There's a jungle themed party held after hours at the zoo. They're Extra Extra.
Bradley wants a plane themed birthday when he turns 10. He's already made up his mind that he wants to be a pilot "like Dad and Uncle Mav and Uncle Ice and Uncle Slider and Uncle....." and Carole is already not a fan of this idea, but she's been subtle about it, with both Bradley and Mav. When he tells Carole and Mav the theme of the year, it all comes out. Before Carole and Mav talk, he's ready to throw His Baby Goose the best darn plane themed birthday party there's ever been. He's already scheming and thinking about where to get decorations, wondering what he could "borrow" from the base or the other guys... wondering what it would take to convince his CO to let him drive Bradley around in circles on the ground in his tomcat. Then they talk. He doesn't agree, but he understands. Carole tries to dissuade Bradley from his party theme of choice- the career of choice talk comes a few years later- and steer him towards something, anything else... it doesn't work. She has to have a Grown Up Conversation with Mav, which is always difficult, and convinces him to help convince Bradley that motorcycle birthday party is an equally good theme...like liers.
When he turns thirteen, an Important Milestone Year, Mav is stationed overseas and can't get any leave. He's managed to swing it for the last eleven years, but he pissed someone off and there's nothing he can do to get home, even though he's managed some way or another for the last twelve years. His birthday is set to be uneventful. It's not the same without Uncle Mav, but Mom said she'd order pizza and they make a plan to have a movie night. He's dreading it, a little bit. It doesn't feel special, and it's just wrong to have a birthday without Uncle Mav around. But when the night comes, it's not just him and Mom. The Uncles ALL show up, sans Mav, and Uncle Ice comes bearing a Very Special gift from Mav, along with Bradley's favorite part of his own gift, the fact that he pulled strings (already) and managed to arrange for at least a call.
Family Birthday Pizza Night becomes the tradition after that. It continues with as many of them as possible, missing an Uncle here and there, but never again without Mav. Birthdays fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen are Pizza Birthdays. By Bradley's sixteenth birthday Carole is too sick to eat pizza with them, and by his seventeenth, Family Birthday Pizza Night is no longer an option.
Bradley's seventeenth birthday is a sad one. He's recently orphaned and facing his senior year of high school. Uncle Mav managed to get a post near Home so that he could take care of him and stop him from ending up in the system but somehow it makes Bradley feel worse because he's there and stuck with him, something than Mav refutes every time he hears the kid say it because he wants to be there with him more than anything else in the world including in the cockpit of an F-14 grounded for the time being. It's the year that Mav gives him ✨Misty✨, his dad's old Bronco. She's a mess, but the other part of the gift is a promise to help him fix her up. They spend the day working and it's the perfect distraction. Bradley loses track of just how wrong it all is until they slow down for the day. But, luckily, Mav is just as ready for the inevitable tears as he was for starting the process of restoring Bradley's New Car.
Birthdays 18-21 are especially lonely. He's in college because Mav pulled his papers. He doesn't want to be there and it's obvious to everyone around him. UVA is far from home (and far from Mav and all of his childhood friends) and he isn't keen on meeting anyone new either. He's angry at Mav and at the world and at his situation and he isolates himself, even though it doesn't help anything at all. He stays in and broods... he doesn't even watch movies and eat Pizza. He does his best to keep anyone from finding out. He gets cards from Mav each year but he doesn't open them. He stops opening the ones from Ice after 19, when he includes a note that suggests he should call Mav and mentions how much he misses him. Bradley doesn't throw them away, though. Just tucks them safely at the bottom of a box. Just in case he ever gets up the nerve to open them.
Mav sends him a birthday card every year until he turns 36. So does Ice. They never get opened, but they join the others in the bottom of the box. Those birthdays are better... mostly. He eventually lands in the Navy, makes it to flight school, and starts meeting His People. There are birthdays spent doing what he loves and spending time with people he loves. Some of them, however, namely 22 and 29 (which is my current random guess for Goose's Last Birthday) are especially difficult. 22 is the loneliest he's ever been. His new friends have taken him Out for the night and he's surrounded by people but it feels so wrong that he can't enjoy it. Maybe he and Jake who's not yet Hangman??? are together for that one... but Bradley's in such a funk and refuses to talk about it that it starts to drive them apart...the beginning of the end.
He turns 37 after the uranium mission. His life has changed so so much. He doesn't feel so alone anymore. He's mending things with Mav, he's finally in some much needed therapy, and thanks to how close it falls to the mission, the whole gang is still together at Miramar. Mav gets back to his birthday Shenanigans and enlists the help of both The Uncles and The Friends to help him transform The Hard Deck into a Rooster Themed extravaganza, complete with more balloons and confetti than should ever be allowed anywhere. This confuses most everyone who's there that night that isn't with them buuuut that's alright. The crew indulges him in a birthday sing-along at the piano with full participation. They play all the games and he wins a number of turns that starts to feel suspicious "Come ON Hangman, we all know you can do better than that" "You can't lose at everything on your birthday, Sunshine". There's a rooster shaped birthday cake. Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts too much. There's also birthday card from Ice. One last one, and it's so so bittersweet. It has a sweet sweet note about how much he's loved and how Ice has kept track of him over the years. An apology that he isn't there to give it to him himself, and an apology that they didn't let him know what was going on, that he didn't want it to interfere with the mission. That Mav tried to convince him otherwise. A plea that he resolves things with Maverick and a reminder that they need each other, maybe now more than ever. Mav wisely doesn't give him the card during the party and waits until the night has wound down and they're back at the hangar???? The next day Bradley opens the cards from Ice and pours over the notes. It's a less happy day. The cards do nothing to help his guilt and, in fact, only make him feel worse because he realizes what he missed out on for so many years. That he'll never have the chance to have again. BUT. That's not Birthday Content so we won't go into that here.
Things only go up from there. Every birthday after is better than the last. Always spent with family, one way or another.

issylee:
“We do some of those down here at the community center, you should stop by sometime. Hand some out.” There wasn’t a volunteering opportunity that she didn’t have a hand in when it came to their hometown. “You did not just compare me to that country bumpkin!” Issy gasped before laughing and pushing at his shoulder. “I think you might be thinking a little too much of this cowboy theme, maybe you should get up on that bull after all.” she said, turning to point in the direction of the bull. Maybe after a couple drinks I’ll try convince him to do it, she thought to herself. “I haven’t watched that video since we were in high school. All I remember is her in a t-shirt obsessing over her neighbor or something like that.”
Tumblr media
“I would actually love to do that, just text me the details sometimes and I’ll come by,” Talon said, feeling like he should be a little more hands on in the whole giving back thing. He couldn’t help but laugh and shake his head. “Hey hey hey, she’s a pop princess now so let’s not be mean,” he said, between laughs. He rolled his eyes whe she mentioned the bull again, it was going to take magic to get him up there. “I had a whole ass crush on her in high school, actually. She was best friends with her neighbor and loved him and didn’t want him dating the mean chearleader, who was also Taylor Swift but brunette for some reason,” he pointed out, before shaking his head. “I am pretty sure I thought I liked blondes until I met you... now I’ve only dated brunettes.”

issylee:
“Okay, so maybe you got some aspects right so I’ll settle for strike one and a half. Does that sound better?” she couldn’t help but smile, “Yeah, it’s where you build homes for the less fortunate. Could be anywhere really. From mainland USA to Africa. The possibilities are endless.” She’s always thought about going somewhere else to help, but could never bring the conversation without getting the side eye from her mother. “You should probably research into what you’re giving money for. There’s a lot of fake charities out there that don’t keep their promise to help the cause. St. Jude is always a good option for donation.” Issy laughed at his latter statement, wondering where he was taking that. “What’s wrong with being a girl next door?” she asked genuinely. Didn’t that mean just a traditional girl? Which she was. “I don’t know?” she asked back to him inquisitively, “I don’t believe that’s a look, Talon.”
Tumblr media
“I will take a strike and a half,” Talon said, with a laugh, before taking a sip of the drink he forgot he had. “I like the backpack ones. Where you give them twenty bucks for a backpack full of supplies for a foster kid. Since they normally transport their stuff in trash bags,” he added, leaning against the bar. “There’s nothing wrong with the girl next door. I like the girl next door it’s just... Think Taylor Swift in the you belong with me video. She’s super cute as the girl next door but right now you’re her at the end of the video with her hair down in the dress. It’s still her it’s just... I don’t know, I don’t know the word for it Issy.”

If he plays his cards right he might get everything he never knew he wanted. | Jessie's note: this might be the greatest enemies-to-lovers I have ever read! The prose is top notch, the characterization is fascinating, the slow transition from hate-to-attraction-to-love is so brilliantly done.
Happy Reading!

music recommendations because i have some thoughts™
i don't wanna be that person who's like "my music taste is so weird lol" but i find that very often most of my friends don't really care for the music i like so i thought i'd just make a long ass post about it on tumblr instead. Fair warning, I'm very passionate about MIKA and The Mechanisms and so this very quickly got VERY long because it is part of my ongoing campaign to convince people to listen to mika and the mechs.
1) MIKA in general, but especially My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019) and No Place In Heaven (2015) (especially the Deluxe version!!)
MIKA is a kind of British singer (half Lebanese, grew up in France blabla), and you probably know him for Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy from his first album Life In Cartoon Motion from 2007. He writes a lot of FUN music, interspersed with the occasional slightly sadder song, especially when looking at an album like No Place In Heaven, which contains a lot of songs with gay themes, resulting in some songs that are just a little bit ouch. He's originally classically trained and has a frankly RIDICULOUS range and idk he just writes very good pop music. Also I have so much respect for that time he talked about how a lot of pop is very fake, with like expensive cars and stilettos and mini skirts in the snow and said "Because I walk down the street, and I don't see any of that. I see fat women and gay men. I don't know... That's real". He's written 5 albums; My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), No Place In Heaven (2015), The Origin Of Love (2012), The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009), and Life In Cartoon Motion (2007).
For starters, I recommend listening to Last Party, Origin Of Love, Grace Kelly, Blame It On The Girls, Blue, Happy Ending, Pick Up Off The Floor, Last Party, Underwater, Tomorrow and Tiny Love (yes this is a long list but i REALLY love MIKA). If you want a slightly broader palette that's not just my favourites, I recommend the Mika starter pack on spotify.
2) The Mechanisms. I warn you. I am making this a thing. I have been obsessed with the mechs since last march.
Boy, where to start? The Mechanisms were a British 9 member space pirate story-telling cabaret that "died" in January 2020. They rewrite songs to fit retellings of various stories. I don't even know what genre I'd describe them as, but probably folk but steam-punk?? Their 4 "main" albums are concept albums, and I honestly just recommend listening to the from beginning to end in chronological order. A good way to get into the mechs is also to listen to UDAD and then watching the live show on youtube or alternately try giving Death To The Mechanisms a listen, to get good quality live show audio of TBI and various other stuff. Also, it was streamed on YouTube and someone combined the footage with the album audio and it rocks. Really, I think the mechs' best selling points are honestly just their concept albums:
Once Upon a Time (In Space) Their first album from 2012. I'd say this is the most "easily digestible" for the general public, since it's a retelling of various fairytales. So, what if Old King Cole was in fact not merry, but rather a cold-blooded dictator, intent on colonising as much of the galaxy as possible. What if Snow White was a general, looking to avenge what King Cole did to her sister, Rose. What if Cinderella was to be wedded to Rose the day that King Cole attacked in order to kidnap Rose? But y'know, In Space and also like every other mechs album it's a beautiful tragedy. Fave songs are Old King Cole, Pump Shanty, and No Happy Ending.
Ulysses Dies at Dawn You guessed it, it's a story about Odysseus, or Ulysses because I guess Ulysses is easier to rhyme or fit in the meter or something, idk. Ulysses is a war hero of unknown gender who is said to keep something that could take down the corrupt Olympians, meanest families in the City, in a vault to which only they know the passcode. Oedipus, Heracles, Orpheus, and Ariadne have been hired by Hades, who happens to be The Mechs' quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, to get into Ulysses' vault. I didn't care much for udad at first, but honestly it's got some real bangers and the story is really good. UDAD weirdly stands out as the only of the concept albums to not feature any gay relationships, per se. Fave songs are Riddle of the Sphinx, Favoured Son, and Underworld Blues.
High Noon over Camelot This is my favourite mehcs album. So basically, this is Arthurian legend, but it's a space western and Jonny D'Ville does a bad southern accent. This is the story of the cowboy lovers Arther, Lancelot, and Guinevere searching for the Galfridian Restricted Acces Interface Login, or GRAIL, in order to stop their world from falling into the sun. Meanwhile, Mordred and Gawaine are ruling Camelot, and Mordred has convinced Gawaine to try to establish peace with the Saxons by whom Mordred was raised, but Gawaine hates viciously. If you love getting your heart broken and songs by a fucking off the rails batshit preacher I HIGHLY recommend hnoc. Fave songs are Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard, Blood and Whiskey, and Once and Future King. Honorary mention for Hellfire because it awakens something animalistic in me.
The Bifrost Incident TBI is the frankly only good adaptation of norse mythology I've ever known of, and I say that as Dane who was literally forced to learn things about norse mythology in school because it's my heritage or whatever. I've been listening to TBI a lot lately because it's VERY good. It's definitely the most refined of the mechs' albums (because it's the newest) but also I just love a little bit of cosmic horror. 80 years ago, Odin, the All-Mother, ruler of Asgaard, launched a train through the wormhole Bifrost that would reduce the travel between Asgaard and Midgaard from 3 months to 3 days, but things didn't go quite as planned. Lyfrassir Edda of the New Midgaard Transport Police is trying to solve the case of why suddenly the train has arrived 80 years late; to figure out whether it was accident or maybe it was sabotaged by Loki, who was allegedly sentence to death her murder of Baldur, by the Midgaardian resistance led by Loki's wife Sigyn, or maybe by Thor, who was to take over after Odin, and who holds quite the grudge because he used to be a friend of Loki's. You might've heard the song Thor from this album, it's apparently quite popular. Fave songs are Loki, Ragnarok III: Strange Meeting, and Ragnarok V: End of The Line. Yet again an honorary mention: Red Signal because while Lovecraft was a bitch, his invocations are fucking RAW.
Basically, the Mechanisms do all of their performances in character as captain first mate Jonny D'Ville, quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, pilot DrumBot Brian, master-at-arms Gunpowder Tim, science officer Raphaella la Cognizi, doctor Baron Marius Von Raum (neither a baron, nor a doctor), archivist Ivy Alexandria, engineer Nastya Rasputina, and The Toy Soldier, who is, as usual, present. You can find very obscure lore about the crew of the Aurora here, tidbits on Tales To Be Told and TTBT Vol. 2, such as One Eyed Jacks, The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchard, Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser, Lucky Sevens, and Lost in the Cosmos.
If you feel like listening to a full 40-50 minute album to find out if you like a band is a bit much, I recommend listening to one of the mini stories Alice, Swan Song, or Frankenstein, which are about 12, 5 and 9:30 minutes respectively.
3) The Amazing Devil You know that guy who played Jaskier in the Witcher? I got into The Amazing Devil from spotify recommending them because I listened to the mechs, and apparently Joey Batey from The Amazing Devil is the same Joey Batey who was in the Witcher. Both him and Madeleine Hyland are VERY talented singers and songwriters and their second album The Horror and the Wild makes me go out into the forest and SCREAM. I listened to it on repeat for like a month straight. I guess they'd also be considered folk, but like. New Folk. Also yes, this is another British artist, I don't know why I'm like this. I've never really gotten that into their first album, Love Run, but King slaps. As I understand there's this whole lore about the Blue Furious Boy and Scarlet Scarlet, Joey and Madeleine respectively, but unlike the Mechanisms it's actually possible to find out things about the actual real people and harder to find the obscure lore? I'm open for people to please help me. Fave songs are The Horror and the Wild, Farewell Wanderlust, and That Unwanted Animal, which is literally a third of their second album, but again. I haven't really listened to Love Run that much, and I just LOVE the harmonies on THATW. (also im gay and dramatic leave me alone)
4) dodie I have so much love for this woman. Like many others, I first knew dodie as doddleoddle on youtube. I think I first stumbled across her in probably 2015, because I distinctly already knew her before she released her first EP Sick of Losing Soulmates in 2016. I think I watched probably every video she's ever made in the span of a few weeks. I just loved her quiet sound and was absolutely HOOKED. Also she's actually the reason I got into MIKA originally, so thanks for that. Dodie just realeased her first album Build A Problem (in addition to her three EP's; the one mentioned above, You, and Human) and it slaps. Yes dodie is also British Fave songs are probably Monster, Rainbow, and In The Middle.
5) Cladia Boleyn Unfortunately, Claudia Boleyn only has three singles and that's it. She's been making content on youtube for quite a while, and that's how I first discovered her. I don't know what genre her music is, but I like it. The songs are Celesta, George, and Mother Maiden Crone, of which the latter is my favourite. I'm not saying Claudia Boleyn invented women in 2017 when she released Mother Maiden Crone, but she did. Also you guessed it, Claudia Boleyn is British.
6) Hozier I'm not about to tell you about Hozier. You know who he is. Listen to Nina Cried Power, Angel Of Small Death & The Codeine Scene, and Shrike. Also Hozier isn't stricly British in that he is definitely from A British Isle, but Ireland is not part of the UK. Give me a break.
7) Oh Land Oh Land IS DANISH. I like her early music best, because I'm not that into the electronic sound. I guess Oh Land is just you regular old pop, but with the occasional weird vibe? Oddly enough, I like her first album Fauna best. Unfortunately I haven't really listened to her newest album Family Tree much, but it seems good? Fave songs are Frostbite, Love You Better and Family Tree. I cried on the bus, first time I listened to the Danish version of Love You Better, Elsker Dig Mer because my mother tongue always just hits harder. Also Frostbite is Oh Land doing a duet with herself which is pretty cool.
8) Oysterband This is a live recommendation. I mean they're a decent folk band and all, but they're a fucking experience live. If you like folk and you ever get the opportunity to see Oysterband live, do it. Unfortunately, yes. They are British. Either way, they are incredible on a scene and I think they deserve a mention for that.
9) Ben Platt Honestly don't know much about this guy, but he's not British and he was in Dear Evan Hansen. He released an album in 2019, Sing To Me Instead, and I just think it's a good album, there isn't really not much more to it. Fave songs are Grow As We Go, Bad Habit, and In Case You Don't Live Forever.
and thats all for now. this has been a ramble. shout out to you if you actually read all of this, especially the mechs part.

I would love for you to talk more indepth about the montage. To me it feels so off and weird. Almost like a parody? So many scenes in it are "funny" moments that just don't make sense in the context of an emotional overview of the road so far... (Like all the scenes where Dean is eating, Donna with donut dust on her face, Sam getting hit during the game show.) I don't know. Isn't the montage supposed to make me nostalgic, teary-eyed? This one definitely doesn't do it for me!
Here I am! Yes, I absolutely agree. The montage is Weird(TM). It’s kind of a tone rollercoaster. It’s very full of funny/silly moments, with some serious moments smacked in. And it definitely looks like... there’s something about it.
For an easier consultation I will reference the gifs I have made of the montage sequence here.
[Gif 1] It starts pretty much like I’d expect a Supernatural goodbye montage to start. The two brothers meeting for the first time in the pilot, a reminder of their childhood with John, their banter still from the pilot, a couple moments of them driving in the car in the first seasons, Dean saving Lucas in 1x03 which is the first Dean-heavy episode and also an extremely symbolic moment for Dean’s entire journey - just think at how Lucas as a mirror was still relevent during the “drowning” Michael possession arc. Everything feels normal so far. We’re starting from the beginning! Now--
[Gif 2] Interesting and weird choices start here. Them pretending to be high school teachers from After School Special 4x13 - actually a very iconic moment for the fandom, remember that post of Dean in shorts from that episode that you had to reblog when it came on your dash? (Actually I’m not sure if I ever reblogged it lol.) Dean celebrating getting young again from The Curious Case of Dean Winchester 5x07 (and Jensen showing off his agility). The two of them showing their FBI badges to Jesse Turner’s biological mother in 5x06. Dean mowing the lawn of Mary’s house in the Djinn dream and immediately after Jess and Sam kissing also in the Djinn dream, from What Is And What Should Never Be 2x20. Then Dean after killing the witch when he was under the memory loss spell, in Regarding Dean 12x11. Sam happy when they celebrate Christmas in A Very Supernatural Christmas 3x08. Them being “lucky” under the effect of the rabbit’s foot in Bad Day At Black Rock 3x03. Sam also happy in Baby 11x04.
Again the present, then the montage starts again with the water-related ghost from Red Sky At Morning 3x06, a Bela episode, and then Bela herself from her first episode, 3x03 again.
What do these moments have in common? Not all of them, but for many of them I’d say reality being manipulated. The Djinn dream, the rabbit foot, Dean’s aging, the Antichrist... and it’s not over yet. Also, them pretending to be teachers, agents etc - not “real”.
[Gif 3] The tone suddenly gets more serious and relevant to current events: Chuck in The Monster at the End of This Book 4x18 (eh). Death in Two Minutes to Midnight 5x21 (the first appearance of Death, while now we’ve had Billie’s last and a very short-lived new one), and then two major moments from Lazarus Rising - Dean emerging from the grave and finding the handprint on his shoulder. Crowley’s first episode, Abandon All Hope 5x10. Zachariah’s death in Point Of No Return 5x18. Anna from The Song Remains The Same 5x13, where she is the antagonist having been brainwashed successfully by heaven. Michael burning and Sam jumping in the cage with Michael in 5x22, then another moment from 4x01 (the brothers hugging after reuniting). A moment from The French Mistake 6x15 (reality fuckery again!). Sam in Frontierland 6x18.
[Gif 4] Reality fuckery continues with Becky marrying Sam in 7x08. Funnily enough, this is the peak of Becky’s obsessive behavior which she went to therapy for and grew away of - it definitely emphasizes how far Becky has come. Donna’s first appeance in 9x13. That iconic shot of Dean in Bloodlust 2x03 because he’s pretty. Charlie’s first appearance in 7x20 while she dances to Walking On Sunshine (relevant?), Kevin’s first appearance in 7x21 when he becomes a prophet (lots of firsts). Abaddon’s first appearance in As Time Goes By 8x12. Then there’s the first appearance of the bunker, in the next episode, a couple shots in fact. Then more 4x01, Ruby pretending to mistake Dean for the pizza man (eh). Then more present...
This section seems to be mostly “first appearances” - including Ruby’s s4 meatsuit, i.e. Genevieve’s first appearance.
[Gif 5] We suddenly jump to more recent events with Kelly and Jack in heaven in Byzanthium 4x08. Jack’s iconic hello from 4x16 Don’t Go In The Woods. Dean teaching Jack how to drive in 14x07 Unhuman Nature. But then we suddenly go from Jack things to something completely different on the surface: two consecutive moments from Changing Channels 5x08, including the iconic Nutcracker scene, and Sully from Just My Imagination. We are actually back to the previous theme: reality fuckery. Gabriel’s episode was about placing them in “television shows”, Sully, while real, is literally a child’s “imaginary friend”. And then... a moment from the cartoon part of Scoobynatural! It doesn’t get more reality fuckery than that. Oh, wait! Charlie and Dorothy going to Oz in 9x04. That’s a pretty strong contender. Dean being hit in the face by a fairy in 6x09 - also about a realm Dean briefly went to. And, in case we felt like we hadn’t gotten enough 4x01 yet, Pamela’s first appearance (her last, albeit a hallucination, was about the whole “How come you only want what you can't have?” thing).
[Gif 6] We continue again with a mixture of firsts and weird things. Ellen’s first appearance in 2x02, Dean and Cas in 4x18 (we saw Chuck from that episode earlier), Jody’s first appearance in 5x15 Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Rufus in 6x04 Weekend At Bobby’s (not his first but a good episode...), Garth in 9x12 Sharp Teeth (not his first but the first in which he is a werewolf and is married... relevant to recent lamp events??), Missouri in 1x09 (her first appearance).
Then Gabriel from 13x21 Beat The Devil (an episode where he plays a trick on Lucifer) and Rowena from the same scene (in fact a scene where they’re flirting).  Then Eileen coming back to life in 15x06 and smiling at Sam. Jo flirting with Dean in 2x02 - her first appearance, again. Funnily enough, she had been introduced as a love interest, but ended up being repurposed as a sisterly figure. Tempted to say it’s relevant in an ironic way. Mary in 14x11 Damaged Goods, when Dean has a goodbye mother-son moment with her. Amara in 11x09 Oh Brother Where Art Thou when she was looking for her brother. Then Lucifer in two different vessels (12x07 Rock Never Dies and 12x21, when Lucifer regains control over the vessel).
Then Metatron doing the find a wife make babies speech to Cas in 8x23! Relevant??? Dun dun dun. Then Ketch for some reason (the first episode where we see his face, 12x08 LOTUS).
[Gif 7] Then Jo/Anael in 13x13, another first appearance. (I cropped these horribly I should have cut them when the present happens lol.)
Sandwiched between two shots from the present, Dean Sam Mary and John having dinner together in 14x13 Lebanon.
Then we start again with Dean riding Larry in 12x11, Dean and Cas dressed as cowboys in 13x06 (mini pattern here...), Asmodeus with the archangel blade in 13x13 (insert meta about Asmodeus in Christian lore here), and the really intriguing “Intermission” shot from the play in 10x05.
[Gif 8] To continue a certain pattern we might be tempted to see, Dean eating piecake from 14x06 Optimism (an episode about a distorted version of romantic love), then Dean eating noodles from 10x13 Halt & Catch Fire (the ghost is a husband that passes on thanks to his wife). Dean after his dentistry session with Garth in 15x10. Meg from 6x10 Caged Heat (the episode with the pizza man porn). Dean and Sam investigating in 4x12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag (an episode about growing old poorly). Crowley in 10x16 Paint It Black (that episode). Dean playing that game in 14x17 Game Night (the episode Cas calls for God, and when Mary dies - the one playing the game was God...). Sam and Dean getting out of the car in 13x05 when they visit the traumatized kid (peak mourning Dean episode...). Then we go into reality fuckery territory again with 14x15 Peace of Mind, Sam under the psychic’s control and Cas disgruntled about it.
[Gif 9] Mick Davies from 12x16 Ladies Drink Free, when he learnt a lesson about monsters. Dean geeking out about the Hatchet Man - so heavy with mirror significances - in 14x04 Mint Condition. Belphegor - Jack’s dark mirror - in 15x03 The Rupture, the break-up episode. Donna’s first episode again, this time Dean and she eating donuts. Dean, Sam and Mary hugging in 12x22 after the confrontation in Mary’s head. Kaia in 13x09 The Bad Place, when Jack uses her to find the way to where Mary is (Mary pattern?). Claire&co rescuing Jody and Donna in 13x10 Wayward Sisters. Dean in 1944 dresses as a sailor in 11x14 The Vessel. Baby nyooming in 15x11 The Gamblers...
Aaand more Changing Channels, the genital herpes ad. It’s almost like reality fuckery is a theme. Followed by Sam drinking the anti-cold concoction at Garth’s in 15x10 and the two of them outside the monster fighting pit in the same episode. Then Cas, Dean, Sam and Jack on a video call with Ketch in 14x09 The Spear when they talk about the egg to trap Michael.
[Gif 10] We stay in the same episode with the four of them heading to Michael. Then the four of them celebrating Jack’s return to life (after Cas’ deal with the Empty). More present, and then the iconic “we’ve got work to do” [trunk closes] moment from the pilot.
So: some of these moments seem like genuine moments you’ll want to put in a montage, but there’s a weird predominance of characters smiling and looking happy or goofy. It’s kind of... not exactly representative of the show as a whole, you know? There are moments that fit as, you know, iconic steps in the story, but surprisingly few, and many moments you’d expect to be in a “final” montage are blatantly not there. Several moments with, let’s put it like this, suspicious meta connotations. Moments that, well, we don’t know what happens in the finale yet, but smell like they might be relevant to future developments. (Metatron’s speech to newly human Cas anyone?)
What really strikes me is the amount of moments connected to reality being manipulated or distorted in some way. Lots of Changing Channels, fantasy elements of various kinds (the Djinn dream, Scoobynatural, Oz, the imaginary friend Becky’s wedding to Sam, the fairy, ...), them acquiring luck (s3) or losing it (s15), and so on. It’s almost like the sequence is telling us something...

Be My Valentine
@malex-cupid
(Wrote this up real quick, apologies if I didn’t catch all mistakes)
Be My Valentine
Roswell New Mexico Malex Fic
Michael had always hated holidays growing up.  While they were supposedly designed around celebrating what you had, it often felt like it instead drove home everything you did not.
Back in high school Max had several prepared long winded rants about commercialism vs the origins of holidays.  It usually ended with Isobel throwing some form of candy at him and demanding her right to be allowed her themed decorations and holiday specific indulgences.
Isobel had once mentioned she was surprised Valentine's Day was among the holidays Michael thought was a waste of time because it had to be the easiest day in the year to find a hook-up.
Michael had responded with his middle finger, and decidedly nothing about the one and only time he had bought a Valentine's Gift, only to be told he really wasn't the sort of person people had a romance with.  Just fun.
Yeah, Valentine's sucked as much as any holiday, and he'd rather have to live through any Max lecture than deal with it.  Sadly for him, Max was spending Valentine's with Liz, which left him to Isobel's mercy.
"Do you know what today is? Are you doing this on purpose? Trying to ruin months of planning because you have a personal vendetta against the joy holidays bring others?"
Michael rolled his eyes.  "I'm on my way now.  I will get your stupid light projector display set up before the dumb party."
"Light and Music display."  Isobel corrected.  "And it's Roswell's first Out of this World Valentine's Singles Meet and Greet."
"Yeah, sure.  Be there in ten, okay?"
"You better.  And please tell me you're wearing something presentable."
Michael groaned in response.  "I'm hanging up now."
"You're only getting out of attending if you're magically not single by 6, Michael."
Cursing Max's timing at asking Liz out again exactly one week before Valentine's and leaving him alone to their sister's mercy, Michael hung up and tossed his phone on the empty passenger seat of his truck.  He pulled his truck out of the junkyard and headed into town - this was not going to be a good night.
Bean Me Up's interior had been decorated for the occasion. Roses colored in a variety of unnatural shades mixed with heart garlands hanging from inflatable ufos.  One wall had been left blank form the projected light display he'd promised Isobel.  Hearts and stars that swirled to the beat of the music playing.  She hadn't told him who she'd hired to do the computer programming for it.  Somehow he felt he should have known before he saw Alex.
Rosa offered a grin from where she was perched on the table next to the booth by the blank wall where Alex was setting up his laptop. Greg and Kyle were seated in the booth Rosa was sitting on the table of and there was a Crashdown Bag with what looked like heart-shaped waffle fries being shared between the three.
"If you were any later your sister would have gone loco, Guerin."  Rosa told him.
"What are you eating?" Michael asked instead of replying.
"Venusian Fries with Martian Sunset Mayo.  Crashdown Valentine's Special."  She didn't offer him any, and in fact pulled the bag closer.  He was tempted to levitate it out of her hands, but held back.
"They also have Jupiter-sized Milkshakes and Sundaes, large enough to share with someone special." Greg said pointedly.  Because apparently he, along with Isobel, had taken the class in How to be as Unsubtle as Possible when trying to Matchmake.
"Or you could just eat it all yourself." Rosa suggested.
"That would be a Jupiter-sized stomach ache."  Kyle put in. Rosa stuck her tongue out at him.
Alex looked up, apparently much better prepared than Michael was for all this because he just offered him a smile like it wasn't supposed to make his knees feel weak.  "Ready to get this display going so your sister stays sane?"
"That would require her to be sane first."  Michael pointed out.  The inflatable ufo behind him promptly smacked into the back of his head.
"I heard that."  Isobel told him, walking up.  "And you have less than an hour to get this running. If you mess this up for me, I will burn your cowboy hat."
"I couldn't allow that." Alex replied, even as he began to pull out cables to connect the light projectors to his laptop.
"It's a stupid looking hat." Rosa put in, nibbling on more fries.
"Michael makes it look good." Alex threw him a smirk, that had both Isobel and Gregory side-eyeing the two of them with smug looks.
"Gross.  I am out here." Rosa hopped off the table, handing the fry back to Greg.  "I'm going to have a Jupiter-sized sundae all to myself."
"Enjoy your stomach ache."  Kyle called after her.  Rosa only flicked him off before disappearing out the door.
"Display, chop-chop." Isobel disappeared to talk to staff.
"I'm going to see if Isobel needs help." Greg spoke up, but didn't move right away.
There was a not muffle bang, followed by Kyle cursing under his breath.  "Yeah, me too." He said towards Greg with clenched teeth.
Yeah, subtle was definitely not anyone's strong suit among their friends.  They also took the fries with them when they left which, rude.
"They could have left the fries." Alex muttered.
Michael had to laugh at that, as he started setting up the projectors and connecting them to the wires Alex handed them.  "Great minds think alike."
"How did you get roped into this?" Alex asked him.
"Have you met Isobel?" Michael countered.
Alex chuckled at his words.  "I have, in fact. But I guess, I don't know, I figured… don't worry about it." He seemed to close off slightly, concentrating on his laptop.
"You figured I would be spending Valentine's out cruising for a hook-up?" Michael couldn't help but prod. "Rather than helping one of my friends?"
"I didn't mean anything by it.  It's none of my business."  Something in his tone sounded the exact opposite.
Michael tested the lights, watching the pattern swirl without purpose.  "I don't."
"Don't what?"
"Spend Valentine's like that.  Any Valentine's."  He turned the lights off, waiting for Alex to finish setting up the program.
"How do you usually spend them?"
"...alone."
"...me too."
Alex's words made him look at him.  It was hard to look away when their eyes met - it always was.  After a long moment, Alex lowered his eyes to the laptop, and pressed a button.  The music piped in over the store speaker's changed and the light projectors he'd set up began to turn off and on in a pattern - making the lights go to the beat.
"Looks surprisingly less cheesy than I thought."  Michael offered into the quiet that had fallen between them.
"It's pretty cheesy." Alex told him, a smile back in his voice.
Michael grinned over at him. "Okay, yeah."
Alex's eyes crinkled as his smile deepened, but then his face grew serious.  Michael felt his own smile slide off his face, concerned.  "Want to get Venusian Fries at the Crashdown with me?"
Michael hesitated, ignoring how much he wanted to say yes without questioning it.  He offered a lopsided smile. "As friends?"
Alex didn't smile in return, instead shaking his head.  "No, definitely not as friends."
"As a date?"
"A date.  Jupiter Sized Milkshake included."
"Do I get a tacky box of candy?" Somewhere a synapse in his brain was not connecting properly.  He'd worry about it later. When Alex's lips weren't beginning to curl into a teasing smile.
"Only if I do, too."
"As many as you want."  Michael felt his own lips curve into a smug grin as he moved over to where Alex was sitting in the booth still.  "Isn't that the kind of deal we should seal with a kiss, though?"
Alex's response was to take hold of his face with both hands, pulling him down into a kiss. When the moment was interrupted by a set of wolf whistles from their friend and siblings from across the coffee shop, Michael flicked them off before going back to kissing Alex.

jj visits you at school (headcanon)
Tumblr media
ok so i took a very innocent prompt and turned it into my old ass reliving my college days (this is an ode to college football + texas food)
(warnings: nsfw-ish, drinking, cursing)
after high school, you decided you needed to get the hell out of north carolina
didn’t even consider duke/chapel hill/state
applied to schools all over the country before deciding on university of texas
(jj was sad because you were leaving - and he wasn’t - but it was closer than cal, which was your next choice)
as soon as you settled in, you bought him a flight out for a home football game
basically a religious experience in texas
you swooped him late thursday night from austin-bergstrom, borrowing your big’s boyfriend’s chevy silverado
yes you had joined a sorority. yes you lowkey loved it.
you could barely see over the wheel, and were basically falling asleep because you had to book it to the airport right after your 2 hour bio lab
but you got so excited when you saw jj - he was all amped up from flying for the first time
he waved you down, holding his beat up duffle bag on the sidewalk outside of arrivals
laughed at you as you tried navigating the truck (it was HARD okay, your big’s boyfriend owned a ranch - it wasn’t meant for the streets of austin), swung open the door as you rolled to a stop, slid into the passenger seat, gave you a “howdy, ma’am” before leaning over the gear shift & tongue fucking you.
woke ya right up!
you welcomed him to texas the traditional way - honey butter chicken biscuit from whataburger
he inhaled it - “god, what the FUCK is this?”
y’all spooned in your twin xl bed - you elbowed him in the chest, twice.
took him to your gen ed history class the next morning - y’all hid in the back and sent each other dirty texts the whole time (nothing new there)
gave him the full tour of campus after & rewarded him with torchy’s after - peg leg margarita + trailer trash tacos.
he had never had queso before - blew his fuckin’ mind
“why is the food here so GOOD?”
took him to your sorority mixer that night - 70’s themed, so y’all blew it out of the water with some very authentic ABBA costumes that you coordinated with your best friend + her boyfriend
jj let you round brush dry his hair & wore the classic all white outfit to match yours
y’all fucked in the costumes later that night - you couldn’t stop laughing, and he wouldn’t stop humming “super trouper”
woke up at the ass crack of day for game day - 2pm kick off meant 10 am tailgate
jj let you dress him (you were worried about getting him into the tailgate - you weren’t really in the mood for him to have to answer the “who do you know here?” question a thousand times)
of course, you had the frat boy game day uniform all ready for him - black ut polo, wranglers & cowboy boots.
he drew the line at the cowboy hat, opting for a backwards baseball cap
he wasn’t excited about the boots, until you handed him a flask & told him that was the only way he was sneaking alc into the game
jj immediately filled it with jack, before slipping into the side of his boot - “alright alright alright”
shockingly, getting him into the frat tailgate was no problem (you wisely chose to bring him to your big’s boyfriend’s frat - while he wasn’t pledge master, he had a lot of pull, and didn’t bat an eye as you brought your semi-incognito boyfriend into the house)
and of course, he made friends with literally EVERYONE he met
shotgunning beers with your best friends and their boyfriends
betting people to ride the mechanical bull in the middle of the backyard (because what the fuck)
sharing his boot flask (“yeah, my girlfriend got it for me - yeah, she’s pretty great.”)
of course, you taught him how to “hook ‘em”
and suckered him into a picture
literally y’all only got one good one, you on his back, throwing the horns, him grinning at you as he half-assed the horns
he was flipping off the camera in every other photo
when y’all got to the stadium, he lost his shit
easily the biggest place (with the most people) he had EVER been in
completely took it in stride - learning all the chants, (“we’re gonna beat the hell outta you!” was his favorite) cheering as pledges were forced to chug whatever crazy shit the older frat members smuggled into the stadium between the student section bleachers, going absolutely apeshit when texas would score
jj didn’t know football could be fun - football was synonymous with his dad betting big and losing hard, which meant he got the brunt of...that
after the game (horns win!), y’all headed back to your dorm for a shower & power nap before hitting sixth street later that night
you changed your outfit three times and your panties once, because SOMEONE thought it would be funny to finger you while you tried to do your hair
you weren’t really complaining, tbh
y’all walked to a pregame, jj wearing his boots & sipping from his flask, arm slung around you
same group y’all tailgated with earlier, so jj was like an old friend at this point
(he even got the invite to the fraternity mardi gras trip in the spring - he asked if you were going to be flashing for beads - you smacked him on the arm)
wrangled him into an intense game of rage cage (you won - he bragged about you for the rest of the night)
laughed as you and your friends sat in the uber to the bars, memorizing your fake id’s
jj had the same one from high school - he had a whole life story for his id at this point
let you drag him to a country bar - he kept your drink full as you & your sorority sisters drunkenly line danced to “any man of mine” and “cottonhead road”
you even got him to two step
he ended up half-carrying your wasted ass home - you passed the fuck out the second you were back in your dorm
being the good boyfriend he is, he helped you take your makeup off and change into your pj’s
you woke up in his cutoff coors shirt, and nothing else - for revenge, you woke him up with a blow job - obviously.
you both had mind numbing hangovers (he refused to admit it, but he was feelin’ a lil rough after a game day + night out on sixth), so you dragged him to brunch - hair of the dog, baby.
knocked a couple mimosas back & made plans to lay out by the pool - nothing like getting absolutely fried by the sun to revive your hungover ass
as you were falling asleep on the lounger by the school’s outdoor pool, you heard him mumble something
“you know where austin community college is, baby?”
you nodded, not following the conversation whatsoever, playing around with his baseball cap (you forgot your sunglasses, he offered it up to protect your eyes from the sun)
“lookin’ at it” he shrugged, holding his phone up, home page for ACC on his browser
you sat up a lil bit. “you’d consider leaving the outer banks?”
he didn’t respond right away - you poked him with your foot a couple times
“I don’t think I’d ever leave the outer banks for good - but for a few years? maybe.” “for me?”
he poked you back “nah, i’m coming for torchy’s + whataburger. you’re just an added bonus”
you nailed him with the hat, square in the face. “shut up.”
he laughed - sat up, swung your legs onto his lap, “i’m coming for you. you shut up.”

happy reading!
read this month
✰ loving you’s a bloodsport by @rosesau 106k | royal au | no smut
harry is a bratty prince, louis is a guard who works in his palace, and niall is the only one who's got his life in control. as someone once said: this is not a love story, but love is in it. that is, love is just outside it, looking for a way to break in.
✰ take my whole life too by @goodmorninglou 18k | dom/sub | WIP | b!L
Louis knows three things, at the base of it all.
He likes when Harry hurts him. He doesn’t know why, not really, but he knows that he likes it. Likes giving up control, likes feeling small and taken care of, likes being praised for taking whatever Harry gives him for as long as he gives it.
He and Harry are meant to be. No matter what time they finally fall together, what day, what age, what place, the moment that they do, that’ll be it. It’s going to be them against everyone else, hand in hand for the rest of their lives. That’s been a given since they met. The half of Louis’ soul that’s missing is Harry’s.
And, sans those two things, he doesn’t really know much of anything at all.
✰ quiet people have the loudest minds by @2tiedships2 38k | a/b/o | heavily implied b!L
The one where Louis is a nonverbal omega who has accepted the fact that he will never find an alpha that will treat him as an equal. On the other hand, he’s never met anyone like Harry.
✰ there’s nothing like it, nothing at all by @falsegoodnight 15k | dom/sub | b!L | sequel
Harry isn’t ready for things to change, and the end is just the beginning.
✰ filthy musings by @smrwine 55k | one shots | b!L
A collection of drabbles for your reading pleasure.
✰ fuck u betta by @jacaranda-bloom 11k | PWP | b!L
There’s something about having Louis like this, exposed and desperate, that makes a primal urge bubble up from deep inside Harry’s chest. Desire mixed with something else, something unquantifiable. It’s the thing that makes them want this, need this. Nothing else will satisfy them or quench their thirst.
OR the one where Harry likes the thrill of the chase, Louis likes to be chased, and everyone gets what they need… in the end.
✰ three days in february by @mercurial-madhouse / writing_practice 189k | slight magic | b!L
Louis is cursed after a night out with the lads and the five have just three days to figure out what happened and how to break it before Harry and Louis both lose their sanity and maybe something more. Louis can hear everything Harry thinks and Harry isn’t sure he can keep his feelings for Louis a secret from his own mind.
✰ works like a charm by @falsegoodnight 18k | hogwarts au | b!L
Ever since Louis joined the team in fifth year, a few facts have become set in stone.
One: Louis is the best chaser in Hogwarts.
Two: Harry is the best beater in Hogwarts.
Three: They do not get along.
So it’s really unfair of Liam to think that forcing them to spend time together as Louis recovers from his injury will make them the best of friends. The last thing Louis would do is get along with that git.
✰ kings by dolce_piccante 13k | marcel fic | no smut
Marcel receives an invitation to his ten year high school reunion, which brings up some painful memories of his youth. His lifelong best friend and roommate, Louis, is as supportive and kind as ever, but Marcel still has hesitations. Louis was Prom King. Marcel...was not.
Will Marcel make the reunion a night to remember with his former classmate, Zayn, who is newly wealthy, handsome, and reveals his childhood crush on Marcel? Or will Louis finally realize what everyone else has known all along?
✰ until by @allwaswell16 38k | cowboy harry | b!L
Rural Eagle County, Colorado wasn’t the type of place to find a famous musician or actor. At least not until songwriter Louis Tomlinson showed up with pop star Niall Horan to visit his uncle’s horse ranch, and they just happened to find themselves next door to a reclusive former movie star.
✰ tastes like strawberries by @sadaveniren 5k | a/b/o | b!L*
I’m stressed. I’m nesting and demand cuddles. Come over
Harry frowned and double checked who the text was from. Yup, it still said Louis - Grad, which meant it was from Louis from his grad school.
aka Louis texts Harry by mistake. It works out.
re-read this month
✰ until I found you by @comebackassholes / dimpled-halo  45k | a/b/o | b!H
Harry Styles is the popstar of the century, or so the media proclaims. He’s linked to every omega he’s seen with, donned as an alpha lothario who isn’t ready to settle down any time soon. His team works hard to publicise him as an alpha who can’t keep his knot in his pants, but not everything is as it seems.
Louis Tomlinson, an aspiring musician working as a porn star and camboy, is waiting for his big break. When he meets Harry Styles he can’t stand the alpha that only uses his power and fame to bed as many omegas as possible. He runs into him at a party and hopes to never see him again only to find that Harry’s assistant is dating Louis’ best friend. To make matters worse, Harry’s about to embark on a world tour and is in need of a guitarist at the last minute, an opportunity Zayn uses to put in a good word for Louis.
What happens when the opportunity that Louis has been waiting for finally comes, but at the price of having to share the stage with one Harry Styles?
✰ makes perfect by checkthemargins 8k | feminization | b!L
"What if you practiced on like, a mannequin?" Louis presses. "Or one of those blow up sex dolls? Or even just like, I don't know, a pillow or something. Whatever it'd fit around."
Harry tilts his head thoughtfully, curls catching the light so entrancingly that Louis finds himself reaching up to push his fingers through them. "It's different, though, innit? When it's a real person. A pillow won't snog me."
"Why should it?" says Louis. "You can't even take its bra off."
✰ confessions of a fabricated alpha by @jaerie 18k | a/b/o | b!H
Famous alpha Harry Styles has a secret and paying an alpha to roleplay a relationship with him over the phone is the only way he can be himself.
✰ like a siren in the night by @crazyupsetter 24k | a/b/o | b!L
“There is an infestation in my home,” Louis hisses, righting himself quickly and pushing his way past Harry, heading directly for the kitchen. He’s rather haphazardly dressed himself, a coat thrown on over a loose flannel shirt and black pants, slippers on his feet.
Harry resists the urge to sigh, closing the door and trailing behind him slowly. “What kind of infestation?”
For all he knows, Louis is going to claim that there’s a ghost infestation. Harry has no idea what the end game is here – all he knows is that Louis has found at least three complaints a week to bring up since he’s been living on Harry’s property, and he’s been living here for six months.
It’s way too many fucking complaints, is what Harry is saying. Especially when most of them are ridiculous to start with.
fics that have been featured in #ficrecfriday so far
✰ loving you’s a bloodsport (x)
✰ into the midnight sun (x)
✰ bruise you like a peach (x)
✰ push you out, pull you back in (x)
if you guys need any more recs, please be sure to check out @cheershalo ‘s blog for her fic recs! they’re amazing and I can’t wait to see what other lists are coming soon!! :)

location: Fairvale + Jesup/Atlanta in flashbacks date: The second week of July 2020 + Ray’s entire life availability: closed solo tldr: Ray ponders his love life before-during-after the apocalypse cw for: transphobia, disclosure talks, transitioning, divorce, drugs (mentioned not used) and all of the general heart break affiliated with young love.
000.
Ray fell in love too easily.
It had always been a problem, really, but there was no real fix. Ray loved deeply, easily, and with his whole entire heart. He had done so since he was a kid, and he would probably always do so, apocalypse or not.
001.
His first crush had been on Brittany Walker when he was six years old. That was before he was Ray, before he was even Nate, but a crush was a crush.
Brittany was the most popular girl in their elementary school. Jesup was a small town that only grew smaller the older they got, and Ray was one of ten in his class. Brittany was classically pretty - blonde hair, blue eyes, a big smile, and kind eyes - but Ray knew it was more that that. He didn’t want to be Brittany’s friend, he wanted to be her best friend, and got jealous of everyone else. When the town got a new set of siblings, brother and sister, and Brittany started hanging out with them instead of him, Ray’s father noticed the frowns and sad looks at the dinner table.
“What’s wrong, champ?” David had asked, the nickname sticking from a t-ball championship streak of two years. Ray had pouted over the okra on his plate, and not just because it was slimy.
“Brittany has new friends and likes them better. But I like her more than anyone else on the playground.”
“Is that right now?” David had amusement in his eyes when he tried to keep a straight face, and Ray was old enough to see it. He was deceptively perceptive for his age and already a good people watcher at the bar. David knew that.
“I’m serious Dad. I’d marry her, like you and mom.”
Ray was still just six, though. He didn’t notice the tense of his father’s shoulder, the way he glanced over to make sure that his wife wasn’t in the room. He didn’t notice the frown lines on his face or how unhappy he had been for the last six years. He didn’t know that the divorce papers will be signed before their next Christmas, and it will be spent without Regina Turner. That all of his birthdays and holidays and life events would be without her, forever, very soon.
“That’s a whole lot of like, kiddo.”
“I mean it, Pa.”
“That’s alright champ. You can marry whoever you want to when you get older, alright? I’ll love you no matter what.”
“Alright dad,” little Ray had said with a wrinkle of his nose. “Don’t make it weird.”
David’s laugh had filled the kitchen, and Ray felt better about it all.
002.
Ray didn’t have a type growing up. The people he liked, he liked individually, not because they fit into a mold that checked off imaginary boxes. In high school his eyes turned towards a new girl in town that’s aesthetic screams southern gothic in an unironic way. Hailee wore her eye liner too thick, kept her music too loud, wore too much black and metal, and glared at everyone at Jesup’s only high school like their mere presence bothered her. Ray had no idea, in retrospect, why he was drawn to her, but he was. Ray was finally Nate by then, finally himself in his own skin and his own clothing and no one could take that from him. Not the busybodies of Jesup, not his mother’s stinging palm on his cheek, and not any pastor of a Church he wasn’t apart of, praying to a man he didn’t believe in.
Ray was unapologetically himself, and maybe he was drawn to someone else like that, too.
Hailee avoided him like the plague, too, at first. She scoffed at his worn levis and dirty cowboy boots. She ignored Ray when the popular crowd stopped by his locker. Ray was popular, too, in spite of his transition and small town gossip. His father owned one of the only bars in town that made him cool, and a source of liquor for unage drinking and parties. Ray didn’t care much for that, but he did appreciate the socialization of it all.
“Hey, Hailee, wait up now,” Ray had called out, almost not recognizing his own voice after his second puberty.
“What do you want, Nate?” Her eyes had narrowed, pretty and green despite the kohl surrounding them.
“You to come to Nick’s party this weekend. What do ya say?” Ray rocked back on his heels, nervous of her answer. People in the hallway stopped to look at them, and Ray wondered what they saw. Was it the stubble on his chin, his recent growth spike, and the new squareness of his hips? Or was it the same kid that had been there since pre-school, unable to leave that old, uncomfortable skin behind.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Yeah? You do that, then. I can pick ya up on the bike if you want?”
Her eyes flashed with something dangerous, then, and Ray knew he had hooked her. What kind of edgy girl could resist showing up to the party on the back of a sick motorcycle?
They find themselves in a closet, of all places, in the middle of the night. Ray tasted tequila on her lips when she slotted their hips together. He pushed back, pinning her against a wall as he slipped his tongue into her mouth. The groan she let out was sweet music to his ears and she melted like putty against his strong frame.
“Worth comin’ out for the party?” Ray asked against her lips. She bit his lip in retaliation before deepening the kiss. Ray’s hands wandered, fingers trailing the skin exposed by the black crop top she had decided to wear tonight. They separate when Ray needed to come up for air, harsh pants filling the small spaces of the closet.
“I didn’t expect it to be so good,” Hailee mumbled against his lips, and Ray can’t help but freeze.
“What? Kissin’ a redneck?” He tried to joke off, desperate for her to make some small town hick joke. Because Hailee was from Indianapolis. She was supposed to be edgy and alternative and beyond all of the small town gossip. She was different from the other people Ray had been taking hayrides with since the days of diapers.
He expected more out of Hailee - maybe more than he should have, maybe more than what was fair - which is why the disappointment felt so much worse with her.
“No, you know...” A brief pause of hesitation and Ray prayed, dear God for her to say anything but what he thought she was going to say. “Kissing someone like you.”
Ray flinched back like someone had dropped a bucket of ice on him. His eyes sting for a brief second of embarrassment before the rage took over. He takes one deep breath, and then another. Man, testosterone was a potent thing, wasn’t it?
“I... I’ll see ya ‘round Hailey.”
“Wait - Nate - I didn’t ... I wasn’t trying to-”
Ray doesn’t hear the rest. He doesn’t need to.
003.
Dating Xavier was a mistake, plain and simple.
Ray was new to the area. He was finally free of his town, free of the stigma and the knowing looks, and the everything else that came with a town so small it felt like a fishbowl. Here, in Atlanta, he got to start over. He could be Nate from the beginning, without any need to pretend otherwise.
And Nate was a useless bisexual. Always had been.
Xavier was kind of a douchebag. He met Ray at a bar, of course, his band playing on the makeshift stage. Xavier was a drummer. He was so dang pretty, easy on the eyes, and kissed in a dirty, grungy sort of way that had it’s charms. He was nothing like Jesup kids; Xavier was spoiled, wild, a city boy through and through, and Ray craved the simplicity of it all.
Xavier (who went by X) was not a good guy and did drugs (most X) and got crossfaded out of his mind after shows. He stayed up crazy hours, usually high, and wrote all sorts of lyrics for his band. Their relationship, if you could call it that, was very brief and mostly physical.
“You should play guitar, babe, like for real, you know?” Xavier said, waking Ray up at five in the morning to tell him that.
“Why’s that, handsome?” Ray had answered, sleep still clogging his voice as he rolled over. It looked like X hadn’t been to sleep yet, which made sense considering the binge he had been on.
“It’d make you more edgy, right, like, you’d be hotter. Everyone’s hotter if they play guitar.”
“S’that why you’re a drummer?” Ray teased, but the fun nature of it went over Xavier’s head. He leveled a big scowl at Ray, and Ray sighed.
“No need to be mean, Nate.”
“Was just a joke, baby.” Ray opened up the covers of the bed, glancing at the clock again. Xavier’s pupils were so dilated that he couldn’t see his pretty brown eyes. “Come to bed soon?”
“You know I have to finish this song. We hit the road in three weeks for our tour.”
In that three weeks, Ray picked up a guitar and had his first lessons, broke up with Xavier, and never saw the guy again.
He was not more edgy, not in the slightest, but he did have a new guitar and a whole city to explore.
004.
Meeting Luci had been accidental in every way. He had picked up an extra shift at the bar that his manager forgot to write into the schedule, so when he showed up for it there was double staffing and no need for Ray to be there. Instead of spending a Friday night alone, at his apartment, he decided to stay. Ray nursed a couple of beers as the bar filled up and texted his friends to show up early.
The Drunken Crown was a sort of themed bar-slash-pub in Atlanta. It was smaller, which Ray appreciated, and had theme nights on the daily. A lot of the college kids from nearby spent their time there, and the average patron was generally on the younger side. On Fridays and Saturdays their theme rotated, and tonight’s was Historic Night.
His friends arrived a bit later, dressed in Spartan battle gear. They did a couple rounds of shots before most of them took to the dance floor, leaving Ray laughing as he refused at the bar.
Ray had come dressed in an honest to goodness toga, including a gold spray-painted leaf crown and golden accessories. His time in the gym had definitely paid off as he was finally bulking up and gaining more definition in his shoulders. One or two girls had been orbiting around him, but Ray didn’t make any passes at anyone. He sipped on his beer, watching his coworkers make their rounds, and decided to people watch for the evening.
A group of flappers were tearing up the dance floor. Ray could see his buddy, Blake, drunkenly approaching them and attempting some dance moves that made him look ridiculous. Some guys in three piece suits were making out by the entrance. A group of hippies were eagerly chatting and mingling at the bar. Ray saw at least three girls who looked like some extras in a Nirvana video begging for some kind of song change from whatever was on the speakers.
Luci had been dressed up as an old writer, someone Ray knew the name of but couldn’t remember, not truly and definitely not any more, and kept all to herself in the very corner of the bar. She was sipping on some mixed drink and Ray’s eyes stopped on her. What was her story? The quiet girl, alone at the bar, barely hanging onto the fringes of all of the activity.
He was intrigued, and he wanted to know.
A simple introduction was given. Ray prodded, trying to get a feel for the quiet girl, who opened up immediately when asked about her costume. Ray was no academic, but he appreciated the passion in her eyes when she spoke about something, voice louder than either one of them expected.
“I’m Nate, by the way. It’s nice to meet you.”
And it was. Luci was his opposite in so many ways. He hadn’t expected to see her again after that night, too shy to ask for her number and unsure if she was interested in giving it. His coworkers had given him hell for chickening out, and Ray just gave them a good-natured smile.
A week and a half later, Luci came in, dressed normally, while Ray was working. He spent the entire night neglecting his duties, trying to get a conversation out of her and working his own natural charm. And she came back the next week, and the week after, too. Soon Ray was brave enough to ask for her number. And she gave it to him.
Being with Luci was different. Their first date, Ray had taken her out of the city to a local dirt track. They went mudding in ATVs and Ray nearly fell off of his trying to impressive her halfway through. Luci’s eyes had been wide the entire time, soaking up the whole thing with a curiosity that Ray came to associate with her. One date turned into two, which turned into a whole series of exploring together.
They took turns taking each other outside of their comfort zones. Ray taught Luci how to have fun the country way, with mudding and camping, and picnics in the bed of his truck as they watched the sun rise together. Luci surprised Ray with her deep thoughts, her sharp mind, and the push to better himself with her. She didn’t let him keep up his self-deprecation. They would have late night conversations, under the stars, all alone, wrapped up in each other.
She met his friends, his family, incorporated herself in his entire life.
Ray fell head over heels. And he told her so, earnest and eager and open to love. Open to a lifetime of learning and exploring with her.
And she left him, at the edge of the cliff he was ready to jump off with no parachute, without so much as an explanation. And she took a part of him with her, whether she realized it or not, that never really came back.
005.
There were more. Some before Luci, some after. Each person was different - different backgrounds, ages, race, gender, personalities - but one thing always remained the same. Ray loved too hard, too much, too easily. Ray was open to the idea of commitment, and committed, too easily.
It didn’t matter who he was dating, he was the constant, he was the issue, and it hurt to admit.
Ray tried, and he loved, before-during-after the outbreak. And it went like this:
There was Rob, a brewmaster he met while at school. They dated for over a year, before graduation hit; Ray wanted to go to Atlanta and Rob wanted to go to family back in Miami.
“It’s like - you know - I really like you Nate. I like you a lot. But long distance? It never works. It’s better to end it now.”
There was Sage, a wild child trust fund girl that wanted to save the rainforest with Daddy’s money. She laughed when he asked her to be his girlfriend.
“That’s cute, you thought we were dating? It’s not that serious babe.”
There was Fi, a survivor in a camp Ray had stumbled across after leaving the Fort. She was the reason Ray stuck around for three weeks. They had had an awful fight before the camp was overrun, and she hadn’t made it out alive.
“You’re too soft, Ray. I’d chew up your sunshine and spit it out. I don’t want to see you again.”
There was Ronnie, the permanent student with four different bachelor degrees. He cheated on Ray with one of his roommates after six months of dating.
“I was bored, Nate. I’m not ready to just settle down, dude. You’re smothering me.”
There was Destiny, a small town, kindred girl he found in Atlanta not too long after Xavier. She had looked at him in the worst way when Ray had come out to her.
“I’m - I’m not - That’s not what God would want for you, you know?”
There was Jenny, a financial advisor that Ray had met through the bar and mutual friends. She had always been so carefree, maybe too carefree, maybe just too free in general.
“Oh Darlin’, I don’t think so. We’re not exactly endgame, are we?”
It didn’t matter who, when, where they were. Ray wasn’t worth keeping around - that was the universally proven fact. It was one he had to stomach his entire life, and well, it sucked, but Ray was not one to stay down. He washed off the mud, dusted off his boots, and got back up again.
000. +
Ray tried not to play the self pity card. It just wasn’t his style. But with the outbreak, losing his family, and trying to re-invent himself yet again? A relationship was the last thing he wanted or needed. Fairvale was a clean break, it was (mostly) mess free. He could be whoever he wanted or needed. He could start over, again. He could protect himself and his heart.
Love mucked all of that up. It always had.
So when he caught himself - again, Ray, really? - people watching with his eyes settling on one person, he ignored it. When he felt that small flip-flop in his belly at their smile, he pushed it down. When his day would brighten at the familiar face of a kind-of-regular-that-showed up, Ray decided he would not have a crush again, thank you very much, and make things uneven.
He could not afford to give up his heart any more than he already had. He couldn’t afford to be let down, disregarded, by someone again.

Hello! would you like to recommend some interesting movies and shows that you like? I want to watch something nice but I don't know what
Yes! I have recommendations! Here are some of my favorites:
For live action TV shows:
If you like Skins, try the Norwegian show Skam (or one of its remakes) and the Australian show SLiDE. Both of them are a little hard to find but they're totally worth it. They're both character-focused dramas that center on the lives of high school students.
Euphoria a beautifully shot teen drama in the vein of Skins that deals with issues of mental health, gender, sex, and violence.
Pushing Daisies a mystery-of-the-week black comedy about a piemaker who raises the dead so that he can collect reward money for discovering how they died.
The Good Place is a philosophical comedy about a woman who is sent to heaven by mistake after she dies, and her quest to become a more moral person.
Ted Lasso is a comedy-drama about an American football coach who is sent to the UK to coach a professional football/soccer team. It's charming and optimistic, and is fun to watch regardless of whether or not you like football.
Gilmore Girls is a comedy-drama about the lives of a mother-daughter duo who are best friends. It's witty and whimsical.
Wandavision is a Marvel Comics mini-series about Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch living in what appears to be a TV show. I won't say too much about this show, but it's one that ends up being deeply philosophical.
Schitt's Creek a sitcom about a wealthy family who loses their money and must move to the small town of Schitt's Creek, where they live in a motel.
Community is a sitcom about a group of friends who attend a community college together and the hijinks that ensue. It's a very quirky show. that's heavy on pop-culture references and meta-humor.
Only Murders in the Building is a newer mystery-comedy show about three strangers share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one.
Westworld is a philosophical dystopian science fiction neo-Western television series about a theme park where guests can indulge their wildest fantasies using lifelike androids. It deals with questions of artificial intelligence, consciousness, ethics, and free will.
Veronica Mars is a teen neo-noir mystery-of-the-week series about a high school student who moonlights as a private investigator.
Reality TV:
Great British Bake Off is a really low-key British competition show where contestants complete three baking challenges each week in the hopes of being dubbed the best amateur baker in the UK. The contestants are genuinely really nice and helpful to one another, so it's pretty chill.
Terrace House is a reality TV show where six strangers move into a house together. It's a dating show, kind of, but it's also about people making friends and following their personal and professional aspirations. It has a group of celebrity panelists who watch the show with you and then comment on what people are doing. How real it actually is is up for debate, especially in the later seasons, but it's a fun watch nonetheless.
Queer Eye is a reality TV show where five gay men give makeovers. It's focused on representation, gay culture, and self-improvement, and has a lot of really heartwarming episodes.
Anime:
Space Dandy, a Shinichirô Watanabe space opera that follows the misadventures of Dandy, an alien bounty hunter who is “a dandy guy in space”. It's mostly a comedy, but it has some episodes that I think are actually really profound.
Cowboy Bebop (the original, not the Netflix live action remake), a Shinichirô Watanabe space western that also follows a group of alien bounty hunters, but this one is in more of a neo-noir style drama that deals with themes of existential angst, loneliness, and a person's past.
The Tatami Galaxy a parallel universe show by Masaaki Yuasa that follows the adventures of a student at Kyoto University.
Night Is Short, Walk On Girl an anime movie by Masaaki Yuasa that exists in the same world as Tatami Galaxy. It's a romantic comedy and is super life-affirming. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a dark fantasy about teenage two brothers who are alchemists searching for the philosopher's stone.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: a cyberpunk spy/thriller that follows the adventures of a law enforcement unit that investigates cybercrime and terrorism cases. This has one of my favorite episodes of TV ever, Kusanagi's Labyrinth, which I really recommend everyone watches on its own even if you don't end up watching the rest of the show.
Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! A slice of life, teen comedy that follows a group of high school girls who have an eizouken (film club). This show is a love letter to the process of making animated movies and it's so, so beautiful.
Western Animation:
Adventure Time is a surreal, coming of age, fantasy-adventure comedy-drama that follows the adventures of brothers Finn the Human and Jake the Dog in a magical, post-apocalyptic world.
Movies:
Before Sunrise is a romantic drama that follows Jesse and Celine as they meet on a Eurail train and disembark in Vienna to spend the night together.
Amelie is a whimsical romantic comedy film that follows Amelie, a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.
Her is a science-fiction romantic drama about a man who falls in love with his artificially intelligent virtual assistant.
Anything Taika Waititi, especially Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy. Both are slice of life, coming of age movies. They're sentimental, whimsical, and angsty. Boy is about a young boy's life and his relationship with his ex-con father. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about a juvenile delinquent who was abandoned by his mother and goes to live on a remote farm.
Only Lovers Left Alive is a comedy-drama film about a centuries-long romance between two vampires.

Alright, friends and enemies.  I’m back with the most recent edition of The Worst Movie on Netflix Right Now™.
Tonight, we’re gonna talk about a little movie called Roped.
Tumblr media
I’d love to say that you can learn everything you need to know about this movie from its one-sheet, but naw.  I mean, you look up you see a cowboy and a cowgirl kissin’ in the rain.  Nothing like a little ranching love, right?
Yeah, no.  The premise of this movie is that a rodeo rolls into a small Northern California town where it immediately faces opposition from the animal-rights progressives who don’t want that kind of cruelty-for-entertainment in their town.
The main characters are young rodeo rider Colton, played by legitimate hottie Josh Swickard, and pre-frosh at UC Santa Cruz Tracy, played by....
...Lauren Swickard?  Yeah.  Looks like the two stars of this little film got married last year.  She was originally credited on the production as ‘Lorynn York’, but she’s making a change.  And you know, what?  Good on you, Lauren.  You’re a good looking couple and I wish you both many happy returns.
And now I’m going to insult your very fine work in this here production of Roped.
Tumblr media
So Tracy wants to be a lawyer and is entering a 6-year program at UC Santa Cruz to get her law degree fast (Is this even a thing? Never heard of it).  But in her last summer in her small hometown (somewhere in Sonoma, I believe), the rodeo has come into town.  Only thing is her town councilman dad (played by Casper Van Dien, helllllloooo daddy), is a passionate vegetarian and thinks the rodeo should leave.
That’s it.  That’s the conflict.  It’s a cheap-ass reverse version of Footloose, where the preacher’s councilman’s daughter just wants to go to the rodeo and eat a damn cheeseburger but her father won’t let her because of his values.
I gotta tell you folks, the biggest problem with this movie is that it’s fucking boring.  There is no meaningful conflict here.  Yeah, her dad gets mad when he catches her doing various shocking things like sneaking in a half hour past her 12:30 curfew.  But Tracy and Colton are both adults and there is nothing stopping them from having a summer fling.
A summer fling that involves nothing more than consensual kissing---but only once Tracy has ended things with her asshole high school boyfriend.  He’s careful to make sure not to kiss her before then.  Because that would be morally wrong.  “Love is worth the risk”?  What fucking risk?  Everything in this movie is set up to be so perfectly honorable and polite that there’s nothing interesting going on. The stakes are so low, I started to wonder if this was a movie or just a Ken Burns’ documentary about America’s heartland.
But then I remembered.  Oh yeah.  If this was a documentary, there would be a hell of a lot more Jesus in this movie.
And that’s the thing that just really sucks about Roped.  It’s bullshit.  It presents a world in which the animal-loving townspeople are so closed-minded they can’t see the beauty and value of the rodeo.  They’ve lost touch with the history of the rodeo.  And they don’t know rodeo people, because if they did, they would understand how well rodeo people value the animals and how well treated and cared for the animals are.
Now look, I don’t know shit about animal treatment and the rodeo.  I’m not wading into that business here. But I have been to two rodeos in the last ten years, including a fairly recent one in Yuma, Arizona.  And if there is one thing this movie gets plain wrong is that no one at this fictional rodeo ever talks about Jesus.  And that matters.
Consider how a Christian movie review site describes the themes in Roped:
“ROPED has a strong moral worldview where the rodeo cowboys overcome the Romantic, politically correct, progressive, environmentalist worldview of the townspeople led by Tracy’s vegetarian father. The cowboys show the closed-minded progressives how the cowboys actually take care of and love the rodeo animals. The movie also extols family and thankfulness.”
And you know what?  That’s an accurate description of the film.
But if the politically correct progressives are the closed-minded ones, does that mean the rodeo cowboys are open and accepting of all peoples?  Is that what we’re supposed to take away here?
If so, that’s a fucking fantasy.  And a delusional one at best.
I mentioned having been to a rodeo recently, because the one I attended opened with the emcee announcing to the crowd that there are people in this country who want to take away religious freedom and take away their right to worship god, but there at the rodeo, they would never stop worshiping our lord and savior Jesus Christ, and god bless the rodeo and god bless the United States of America.  The crowd uproariously applauded.
Now I have no problem with opening an event with an invocation or prayer. It can be a meaningful and thoughtful moment. It can invite all people into a moment of welcoming and thoughtfulness.  But it’s quite another to begin an event with a declaration that your right to worship Jesus is under attack, and to equate loving god with being a patriot.  As an atheist and a Jewish person who does not accept Jesus into my heart, I felt so uncomfortable, I felt like I should leave.
And that’s the problem with so many of these small town fantasy movies.  They present these smalls towns as loving and caring communities.  People who look out for each other in a way that people don’t do in the big city.  People connected by bonds to the land and this small town life.  And sometimes they mention God.
But they don’t talk about Jesus.  Not the way real people in the United States talk about Jesus.  So often, real people in these small towns talk about Jesus in a way that excludes all others from that warm circle of welcoming that they feel so proud of.
This is not everyone.  It’s not.  I don’t want anyone to walk away from this post thinking that I dislike Christians.  I do not.  I actually think there can be something valuable in any religion and especially in the communities built around them. But those communities have to be open to all and they have to be respectful of those who are different.
And for this movie to thematically accuse its progressives of being closed-minded without fully and accurately representing the way that rodeo culture can also be closed-minded makes this film doubly reprehensible.  Not only is it boring and bad, its moral superiority is unearned bullshit.  And for that, it is The Worst Movie on Netflix Right Now™.
But hey, at least Christian film reviewers and profane atheist film reviewers can agree on some things:
That said, ROPED is a lackluster romantic drama that doesn’t evoke any emotion in the audience other than making viewers want to watch something else.
Giiiiiiiiiiiirl, same.

Tumblr sucks so I had to post this twice but you should still read it because I had a lot of fun writing it xD Yamato is so easy to tease omg
Today’s Digimon Adventure: 2020 episode is entitled, “Time To Bring Back Visual Kei Bands,” because that’s pretty much where WereGarurumon belongs. I know what you’re thinking, he’s a wolf man in jeans with a kind of grungy rock n roll cowboy theme, how is that visual kei?
My friend, it’s all about the NAILS.
Tumblr media
Those perfectly manicured, PINK freaking nails.
Tto start I’ll say this episode lowers the tension significantly compared to previous ones. That’s to be expected, and doesn’t mean it’s boring. It does a lot - it lets us confirm some things about Yamato, and a couple things about Sora and Jou in relation to him as well. It is otherwise a carbon copy of episode 8 in terms of story arc. More below as usual
So this ep is Yamato/Sora/Jou main inside a Taichi/Koushirou/Mimi sandwich.
Tumblr media
We are starting to see more of Mimi Herself, complaining and whining about the unfairness of it all. Taichi appears to have scaled this wall by himself and Mimi’s like “YOU HAVE TOO MUCH ENERGY, YOU’LL PUT THE ENERGIZER BUNNY OUT OF A JOB, DO YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HOMELESS BUNNIES?? HE HAS TO PROVIDE FOR HIS FAMILY”
Adding salt to the wound, Koushirou then zips up the wall like this..
Tumblr media
zip!
The good thing about Mimi is, though she’s emotional, it’s easy to lift her spirits. She’s very in the moment. And fortunate that she has a partner who is both very patient and useful in these circumstances.
Tumblr media
wheeeeee
Tumblr media
Meanwhile the slightly-less-energetic group has put their heads together and decided to fly first class to their destination. I would ask where they got the basket but I’m sure I’d get the same answer as Taichi’s raft from episode 4 and Jou’s pergola from episode 7: these kids are extremely good at woodcraft and speedy
(or maybe Sora just had a giant basket in her bag, which we all understand by now is really a Bag of Holding)
While airborne they are Attacked!!! by SandYanmamon and not one but two tornadoes.
Tumblr media
Jou: Wonderful!
(for a hot second there I mistook this for Birdramon’s line and was like “??? birdramon’s unusually sarcastic today” but of course it’s the king of morbid humor kido jou)
Tumblr media
These Kyaromon appear out of nowhere to show off their dramatic eyeliner. Work it baby
Tumblr media
Just when you think SandYanmamon and TWO FREAKING TORNADOES are enough, turns out there’s another threat lurking below the sand for the sole purpose of reminding us yet again “Pokemon this is not!”
SandYanmamon: Aaaaaaahhh nooooooooo i had so much living left to doooo heeeelp mommyyyyyyyyy
Tumblr media
NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILD YOU MONSTER!!!
Tumblr media
Cool-headed Yamato figures out that the new monster is able to track their movements under the sand. He sends the others away while he stays behind to hold off the bad guy.
Tumblr media
The Kyaromon lead them to a cave where they meet...
Tumblr media
ewww uuggghh noooo I hate them aaaahh make it stoppp
Tumblr media
and also Neemon! and I’m just going to assume this is a parallel universe version of Frontier’s Neemon because it tickles me to think this is what he actually sounds and acts like and is just riding Bokumon out of pure spite
also Bearmon’s cap says “Bears.” Not bear, bears plural. I believe he’s an outcast former member of the Gummy Bears.
The Labramon look like Rainbow Brite rejects
Tumblr media
Pictured above: First lovers’ tiff!
Neemon doesn’t know about the holy Digimon and tells the kids he is leading his group of perfectly helpless Digimon across the monster-infested desert because of the dark forces taking over everywhere. They will seek asylum with Leomon! We got our first mention of Leomon! Quick, cast your bets, how long till he dies? My guess is sooner rather than later because this seems like the kind of show that likes to kill your darlings.
Sora takes one look at this pathetic group and goes “We must go with them to protect them!” conveniently forgetting that she just got her ass kicked, but hey it’s the thought that counts
Yamato is quick to disagree.
Tumblr media
Yamato: Did you forget that I stayed behind while you RAN AWAY? When you say let’s protect them, you mean I’M gonna be protecting them, right? RIGHT? That’s what you mean RIGHT??
(he thinks, but doesn’t say. that wouldn’t be Cool)
Yamato doesn’t want to lose sight of their mission, which is to fix things in their home world. He’s already at his limit hanging out with other human children who don’t know what they’re doing, he doesn’t want to be slowed down by freaking Bearmon. Wishy-washy Jou is like “Eh, either way sounds like death and torment to me, so...”
The interesting thing to me here is that no one’s upset. A bit surprised, I think, but Sora just stands her ground, Jou wibbles but eventually gets pumped up enough by Gomamon to decide to help her. They don’t even try much to stop Yamato from leaving which I think is what surprised me the most. I would have expected at least a vibe more like “We shouldn’t split up!” or something. If Taichi were there, maybe we’d have seen more conflict... but I’m really not sure. So far, conflict among the kids has been very low key. Even last week, the first time we saw Taichi and Yamato butt heads, to the other kids it was shocking but to a 99 Adventurer like me it was barely a kerfluffle xP
Well, anyway, the result is Sora and Jou stay with Neemon, and Yamato goes off on his own, and there is surprisingly little bad blood about any of this. They are all just getting to know each other though, so maybe that loyalty’s not quite expected yet.
Tumblr media
Same as episode 8, Gabumon hints that there’s more to Yamato’s behavior than he lets on. He’s not just coldly abandoning his friends... except that he totally is >_> (As an adult, I don’t exactly think Yamato is wrong. I’d be more likely to agree with him than the others probably xP But these are children in a show for children, so Protecting Others and Following Your Feelings get a boost over cool rationale.)
Gabumon says Yamato should open up to the other kids. YEAH RIGHT. Yamato says “You’re all I need.” AWWWWWWWWW this wont backfire on them in a way that will wrench out my heart and tear it to a million pieces in forty episodes or so, no way
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon becomes a Sand Boat while Birdramon covers the sky. At first I was like “hey! not a bad plan!” If they can help Neemon’s group get across the desert faster, it will be a big help even if they can’t take them further.
Of course, first they have to deal with the SandYanmamon.
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon: Why does everyone go straight for the horn!?!
Oh, and also the two tornadoes.
Tumblr media
Sora, standing on Birdramon’s leg: don’t look down don’t look down don’t look down
Tumblr media
And now Sora’s on fire! That is it, I’m headcanoning it that the kids are basically invulnerable as long as they are touching their partners. THERE’S JUST NO EXPLAINING THIS
The flaming elementary school child does well until her partner is snared by the same monster from before, who turns out to be Scorpiomon. But this ain’t your momma’s Scorpimon from 99 Adventure, who was really Anomalocarimon but that was too hard to expect kids to say. This is the real Scorpiomon who is much scarier.
Tumblr media
All of a sudden, from above!
Tumblr media
ACTION LINES!!!
Tumblr media
Yamato and Garurumon, both physically incapable of doing anything normally when there is a cooler, more awesome method available, drop into the battle from the air and start burning shit up.
Tumblr media
They stand, bodies licked by blue flame, piercing eyes bright with the fever of battle, the sound of swooning fan girls echoing into the night
Tumblr media
Garurumon does his best but Scorpiomon is a level higher so, duh, he doesn’t stand much of a chance. WHAT WILL OUR HERO DO.
Well, first, same as in episode 8, he flashes back to each of his newfound friends, gaining strength from their memory. Yamato is so sentimental it Hurts
Then his mind flashes to someone else...
Tumblr media
... his favorite bobble head doll. No wait, that’s his round-headed baby brother, Charlie Brown.
Tumblr media
he is infused with the power of Friendship!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Garurumon: What... is this feeling... so passionate... so... powerful... FFFRIENDSHIPPPPPP IS MAGIC
Tumblr media
He then evolves into a brony into a furry in the coolest freakiest way he knows how.
Tumblr media
WereGarurumon is basically everything the creators thought little boys like besides dinosaurs (because Taichi’s got that one covered) thrown together to make the ultimate little boy dream action figure: wolves, leather, hardware, piercings, brass knuckles, belts, skulls, scars, dog tags, and fuchsia stiletto nails
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon: Sugoi... so shiny... oooh... blinding me...
Tumblr media
WereGarurumon kicks Scorpiomon’s ass, it’s a cool battle scenes complete with kicks so fast his foot appears detached from his body. He then gives Yamato thumbs up.
Yamato: With nails like those the brass knuckles are kind of overkill...
Tumblr media
Yamato dodges apologizing for going off on his own like that by saying he only came back because it’d be useful to him to have the others around as a decoy. Jou’s like FRIGGING DECOYS AGAIN??
Tumblr media
But his dedication to remaining cool and aloof falters and he ends up telling them he’s just extra pressured to get their mission handled because he has a little brother, Takeru, living in Tokyo who is probably very scared stuck in the blackout. Sora and Jou are like “Oh, that makes sense, that’s why you’re so high strung.” They don’t point out the obvious, which is that they also have families affected by the blackout... >_>
Tumblr media
Jou passionately thanks Yamato for being so forthcoming so early in the season and looks forward to telling Yamato about himself in the future.
Tumblr media
The others: “But we already know all about you.”
Jou: “But HE doesn’t!”
xD look forward to it, Yamato...
Tumblr media
It’s episode 11 and Yamato can already smile like this... I had to cap it.
Yamato: Ahh, I’m finally getting used to wearing this purple shirt. Still can’t get quite suppress the urge to cut off the sleeves though...
The other slice of bread completes our sandwich when we shoot back briefly to Taichi/Koushirou/Mimi’s group.
Tumblr media
Taichi gets annoyed with Koushirou for the first time because of how much time Koushirou spends taking pictures of everything. Koushirou is that kid on the museum field trip who holds up the entire class reading every last word on the exhibit plaques while everyone else groans ‘cmon dude I wanna get to the dinosaurs before we go extinct too!!’
fyi I, Fizzing Wizard, was and am that slow ass kid
Tumblr media
Mimi’s even more impatient than Taichi and in her boredom she starts touching things, because she’s never seen The Mummy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT’S A TRAP!!!
lol
Next ep’s trailer includes:
Tumblr media
Andromon!!!
Tumblr media
And Lillymon!!!
Oprah voice: You get a Perfect level and you get a Perfect level and you get a Perfect level and you get-
Yeah so, clearly everyone’s gonna get to Perfect level much quicker than in 99 Adventure, which again, it’s good they’re mixing things up. The question is, what’s next? My guess is down the line everyone will get Ultimate levels and of course, at some point we’ll see Omegamon. I wonder if there will be other Jogress possibilities? Just because it’s hard to believe evolution will stop being important, but if they’re going through both Adult and Perfect so fast it doesn’t leave much left for the rest of the season...
I give this ep a 5.5/10 for being basically a remix of episode 8, and I’m looking forward to getting new stuff for Yamato eventually. Next week’s looking to be Mimi-centric if Lillymon’s any indication, but I’ve got my fingers crossed for a few Taishiro moments anyway.

Hello! I'm new to your blog and I'd like to ask for a transfer student (gn if its easier on you) from Texas to UA. Like class 1A is told that they're having a new student from Texas and they think to throw a wild west welcome party. Reader doesn't have the heart to tell everyone they're from the city so they just go along with it and maybe them and bakugou end up alone after the party and get to know each other some? Thank you!!!
(a/n):hello anon! thank you so much for the request!! this is really interesting and i hope i did my best!!🥰
p.s- so i read this over and over again and what i understand from here is that reader comes from the city; not from the wild west. i hope i got that right! :’’)

“did you hear?! we’re getting a new student!!”
“a new student? cool! i can’t wait to meet them!”
“do you think they would give me their number? now i’m worried...”
“oh my god. shut up you idiots,” bakugou told his friends, having the last few bites of his dinner in the dorms.
“what’s your take on the new kid, man? pretty sure you have something to say,” his red friend said, ignoring the cue for them to quiet down.
“huh? i don’t know. heard they were from... Texas or something. damn deku was talkin’ about it,” he said.
he watched as his friends jump up and down, discussing on even bigger plans. he did hear a few - mainly a welcome party, showing them around school, so many things that he knew he could show interest in. knowing him, he was about to play the “chill guy who’s pretty nonchalant about the new kid thing.”
i mean, they’d probably be an okay person. he thought while zoning out.
“hey, bakugou! we need you for this!”
^^^
“settle down, 1A!” iida said for what seemed like the umpteenth time today, as everyone scurried to their seats. the discussion of the wild west themed party was still going on,and it’s halfway done.
in came aizawa-sensei with his sleeping bag. “now. i’ll make this quick. all of you have heard it - we do have a new student. come in, y/l/n,” he waved his hand to someone outside the door, as the class turned to the door, waiting for someone to enter.
as y/n entered, they received various ‘oohs’ from half of the class.
bakugou turned to look at the whole scene unfolding, and when he did, he didn’t regret it.
usually, when it’s someone new, he tends to look away from it as soon as possible. it didn’t seem to buy his time. but right now, it was the total opposite.
his palm which stayed on the jaw now went out of it’s place.
something about y/n pulled him into curiosity. they’re from a different country. they have decided to travel all the way from Texas to UA. of course there could be a reason. but to think that they transferred here - wow.
aizawa-sensei snuggled into his yellow sleeping bag, giving you the floor.
you adjusted your tie, taking in deep breaths. “hello! my name is (y/n) (y/l/n)! i’m so glad to be here! i hope to know much more of your school and also to be friends with everyone here!”
while talking, you took a good look around the classroom.
there was a green-haired boy, eyes gleaming with excitement. a red-haired boy with cute pointy teeth. a girl with pink rosy cheeks. a girl who has earphone jacks on her ears. a dual-color eyed boy.
a spiky blonde haired boy, with ruby red eyes, looking directly at you. something about it was very peculiar.
a few questions in and you noticed your homeroom teacher crawling out of his sleeping bag. “you done? alright. head over to your seat there. the next teacher should be here pretty soon. 1A, you know what to do,” he said, walking out of the door.
you made your way to your assigned seat, and sat down. moments later, a few of your new classmates turned to look at you, introducing themselves. you laughed. it was definitely a new kind of feeling.
especially when you felt the same bright red eyes looking at you.
“um, what’s that boy’s name over there with the blonde hair?”
^^^
“hey.” you heard him say as he approached your desk after a whole day of stealing glances. you weren’t weirded out by that either - considering the fact that you were curious about him too.
everyone talked to you during the school hours, except for him.
it was only the both of you left in the class. the class rep, iida, handed over the key to him. they left, saying sorry a number of times because they had lots of work to complete back in the dorms.
you did need assistance back to the place too. you weren’t used to the school just yet, so having one person as a company would definitely help.
“oh, hello! um, i’m still new to all this, but how do i address you?”
“king explosion murder.”
“woah! really?” you chuckled.
“no,” he snorted at first, but then looked away immediately. “bakugou. look,i’m gonna get straight to the point. i got a pretty tight schedule, ya know? now, put these on.”
“blindfolds? oh, they have cute little eyes on them! are they yours?”
“hah? no way. it’s dunce fa- kaminari’s.”
“okay... wait, but why do i need to put these on?”
“just put them on and....and trust me. hurry up.”
you obliged, sliding them onto your eyes. he then held your arm, indirectly telling you to start walking.
so you did. he was a great company, even though you didn’t get to see his face. he held you back in case you looked like you were about to fall/ hit something nearby. other times, he was quiet.
and it wasn’t like it was awkward silence, either. it was a pristine one, as there were small talks in between. him trying not to snicker with how you stretch your arms out to walk, and him giving you directions.
it was nice.
he then told you to stop, and you heard a large door opening. he brought you in, and you assumed that he closed it behind the two of you.
“alright. take ‘em off,” he mumbled.
the second you did, you saw party streamers flying everywhere, with balloons hanging. you saw the entirety of 1A wearing cowboy hats or boots, and bandanas either tied on their wrists or their necks.the decorative banners had little horses on them, with mini Texas flags, and basically what you would see in the wild west. kaminari was playing the harmonica with so much of passion.
it was cute, but this was all for you?
but how were you supposed to tell them-
“welcome to UA, y/n!” they screamed, rushing over to you, with some engulfing you in warm hugs and high-fives.
“oh my lord! this is amazing, thank you so much!” you smiled widely, clapping your hands. “and the decorations! this is amazing!! i really appreciate your hard work.”
maybe now’s not the time. a cake, self-made. and the decorations. some were handmade, you could tell by the adorable drawings. the setup itself was glorious. so no, you didn’t want to shatter their efforts.
this was still amazing, regardless.
“so, are you ready to cut the cake y/n?! sato and bakugou worked on it,” mina - the pink haired girl - pointed to the both of them.
“of course! i’m pretty sure it tastes so good,” you said, walking towards the wide table with the lovable bunch.
^^^
the common room was cleaned up really quickly. not a lot of mess was made but cleanliness is priority for sure.
“so... you were zoning out quite a lot lately. what’s up with you?”
bakugou looked into your eyes. you gulped a little, setting down your drink. “nah, it’s nothing-,”
“was the cake out of taste?” he raised an eyebrow. “pretty sure i used the right ingredients. sugar boy over there knows his ways with desserts. or was it the food?”
“woah, woah, chill out bakugou! no, the cake was perfect.i loved it a lot. like,i would eat it again.”
he cleared his throat, backing away. “damn it. okay, cool. then what was up with you? no one asked you up to this point, so there.”
“um... okay. you have to promise me not to tell anyone about this then.”
“i knew it.”
“wait! it had nothing to do with the party. absolutely nothing. but keep it a secret. promise me?” you held out a pinky finger, waiting for him to do the same.
he looked at it, hesitated; but gave in anyway. “whatever. i promise. what is it?”
“how do i say it... i’m not, um, from the part of where the wild west is? more like.... i’m not exactly from this part of Texas. yes, i am familiar with this type of culture, but i wasn’t exactly raised with it.”
he blinked a few times, and nodded. “oh.”
“and it’s not like i wasn’t hating it at all! this was already one of the best moments i’ve had so far in the academy; which makes me look forward to more! it just made me sad that i did have to admit it sooner or later. on the other hand, i was so happy.”
“geez, i told them about it,” bakugou placed a hand behind his neck. “gonna have to ask this again - was this whole party thing okay?”
“yes, don’t worry about it!”
“i’m not worried! i just didn’t want to think i wasted my time prepping for this!” he said.
so he was worried.
“worried or not, this was very eventful. you’ve outdone yourself, bakugou katsuki.”
he smirked. “ha, you don’t seem bad yourself.”
“why, thank you. the same goes to you, good sir,” you bowed.
“hey. multiply that by 10.”
“no fair!”
the talk went on for quite a while. the bakusquad were bewildered by how bakugou didn’t seem to complain to you about his bedtime, but then again, they loved seeing their friend - usually really worried about his schedule - finally beating it while making friends with the texas beaut.
———————————————
(a/n): beaut ; a fine example of something. it sounded really wholesome to me, so i went with this title. i hope you liked it! <3
