making my peace with how lyra was characterised in the show vs the books because so much of it relies on her age and even dafne keen being only one year older than lyra when filming set her up to portray a different character from the very beginning. it doesn't seem like a huge difference but lyra being a child and not a teenager is of fundamental importance to her path in the books so it's inevitable that she was written more like a teenager in the show (and you can't stop child actors from ageing, you can only adapt the writing and directing to match how they mature). the show wrote lyra's arc in accordance with her maturing to the age of around 16, so they chose to have her grow out of her habit of lying and instead wield the power of truth to further her on her journey. it was a different journey from the books, but it got her to the same place: saving her friend and countless others with the power of storytelling and a silvertongue

Crying weeping sobbing about how at its very center His Dark Materials is a story about childhood best friends who love each other so much that one of them literally rips the universe apart because she promised she'd save the other one and she refuses to abandon him. "I told them you'd come, just like at bolvanger" yeah okay okay okay even in the world of the dead Roger never for a second questioned that his best friend would show up and help because she promised. the way children love is strong and pure and more powerful than anything in the world its okay I'm fine its fine.

thinking about how lord asriel believed it was his life's purpose to change the world and defeat the authority and his arrogance caused fractures in the fabric of the multiverse, but lyra belaqua saved possibly billions of souls stuck in the purgatory, returning their essence to the multiverse in the form of dust, offsetting the authority's response to asriel's provocation, not because she wanted to be a hero but because she wanted to help out her friend

I love series where the main character(s) didn’t actually save the world to save the world.
They were just doing something else and happened to save the world at the same time.

Every single adult who comes into direct contact with Lyra and talks with her for any period of time (and is not related to her): I only had Lyra for ten seconds, but if anything happened to her, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
Meanwhile, her bio parents: Excuse you, the only one who is allowed to horrifically mistreat my daughter and do unforgivable things to her and those she cares about, is me!
