Notes: I am so so excited that people are liking this story so far !!! I love all your comments and am so appreciative of the likes and reblogs ! For this chapter, I did use a big chunk of the direct dialog from ACOWAR for the Hewn City meeting with Eris, because I think its important context and I wasn't about to rewrite SJM's mastery. So disclaimer, I do not own any of SJM's characters or speak for her or them in anyway ! This is just for shits and gigs and I hope y'all enjoy this chapter ! Also please let me know how we feel about the Eris POV :)

Amber eyes and a pale face littered in freckles, framed by fiery red hair,  stared wildly at her. Eyes full of fear and confusion contorted his beautiful features. He was stunning, truly. Rakish, almost lanky, but toned muscles rippled under his well-fitted clothes as he fell to the ground gripping and clawing at his throat, trying to force air back into his lungs. Y/n did that to him. She made another being feel that pain and suffering. But he was hurting her sister. He was hurting Feyre. Y/n didn’t know why she had to remind herself of that fact so often to justify her actions that day on the frozen lake, but she had fallen asleep thinking about the male every night since.

Now that Feyre was home, things started moving pretty quickly. Hybern was making moves in the Spring Court to bring down the wall to the human lands, and thus putting Prythian on the brink of another war. Everyone was hard at work planning, coordinating, and scheming, but Y/n was told to just keep training. She wanted to be useful when the time came, so she was going to need to hone her powers and her physical abilities. She finally got to be a part of the plans when Rhys announced at family dinner that everyone would be taking a trip to Hewn City.

Y/n wasn’t afraid per-say, but she wasn’t sure what to expect. Feyre had told her that Amarantha’s ‘lair’ for lack of a better term, was designed after the city. She wasn’t sure she wanted to see that firsthand after hearing about everything that Feyre and Rhys went through. She was going to put on a brave face though. It’s not about her. It was about helping this court, her new family, and potentially the fate of the world as they knew it.

She studied herself in the mirror after selecting the right dress. Rhys had told her to wear whatever color she wanted, but she knew that this visit to Hewn City was all about appearances and she needed to help show that they were a united front. She had never been fond of black. It always looked so good on her twin, but Y/n preferred softer, neutral tones that helped her blend into the trees and underbrush. Tonight however, she would step out of her comfort zone. Adapt. Her constant mantra. So, she studied herself in the mirror, eyes gliding along her body that was no longer too thin, but now tones and showing real muscle. Her hips were wider, her arms and thighs thicker. A body to fill out such a fine dress. It was a floor length gown, as black as obsidian. It had see-through long sleeves and a modest neckline. Nothing flashy, she didn’t need to draw attention to herself, she just needed to blend in and help silently from the dais. But as she looked at herself, she thought that she looked quite pretty. She always thought she was the most plain of her sister, even now as Fae, but tonight, Y/n would try to wear this dress with confidence and that casual coolness that came so naturally to all the others.

 Eris’ POV

 That beautiful female on the frozen lake haunted him every waking and sleeping hour of Eris’ life. The way she literally took his breath away. If it weren’t for her power actually stealing the air from his lungs, her beauty alone would have stopped him in his tracks. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his many centuries of existence. He could help but laugh when she stormed up to him in the Winter Court wearing little more than pajamas. He shouldn’t have laughed. If the Illyrians thought she was important enough to bring along, he shouldn’t have underestimated her. He saw her face every time he closed his eyes. Her y/e/c orbs staring straight into his soul. It ratted him, which not much did anymore.

Eris hated Hewn City and he hated Keir. He was so tired of playing these court games and scheming behind the scenes. He knew Rhys liked to make an entrance, but he was growing bored and restless. Until he saw her. She was just as beautiful as the first time he saw her, but now, dressed in a night court black gown, she didn’t glow like she did when she was comfortable in her chestnut brown pants and a forest green sweater. Who is she?

Y/n’s POV

Stood atop the dais behind the single throne that Feyre and Rhys shared, Y/n scanned the room. Doing her best to keep her face carefully neutral, she stood there while Rhys addressed the court introduced Feyre as their High Lady, and coolly demanded that they kneel. After a long pause, the whole room on their knees before them, he released them to enjoy the festivities.

A man with blonde hair, that Y/n identified as Keir, Mor’s father only by blood, approached the dais. Then, the last person she expected to see approached as well. The male from the lake, with the glowing amber eyes and hair that reminded her of a maple trees falling red leaves. She swore her heart stopped beating when he made eye contact with her as he bowed. Not to Rhys or Feyre, but to her.

“Keir. Eris. So kind of you to join us. But don’t be so eager to get our meeting over with, go enjoy the evening. Azriel’s shadows will find you when we’re ready.” Rhys slid his bored gaze over each male and waved a hand in dismissal.

Eris. That was his name. Eris Eris Eris. The name clanged around her brain, and she had to choke back the desire to know how it felt on her tongue. She knew his name now and it made falling asleep to picturing his face feel like she was violating him in some way. She knew she shouldn’t have been thinking about him in the first place. He tried to kill her sister, or bring her back to his father who was a known tyrant and took brutality to another level. She should definitely not be thinking about him. But there he was. And gods damn he was even more devastating than she remembered. For starters, he wasn’t covered in blood, and she wasn’t choking the daylights out of him. But more than that, he had this air about him. He exuded a confidence that was purely Fae male and came from centuries of a life lived. Then she remembered the way that fire had danced from his fingertips. He could wield flame like an extension of his own body. It was beautiful. Y/n once again had to reprimand herself, because those same beautiful flames coming from his long, calloused fingers, were causing harm and pain to her own sister. That light and radiance that fire had was diminished in the context of it’s use. How dare he make Y/n fear something she loved so dearly? How dare her use fire, which is the root of all life, use it to hurt and destroy?

Y/n was snapped out of her daydreaming by the sound of someone clearing their throat. She realized Eris had not broken eye contact with her and was now starring at her expectantly. With no small amount of embarrassment, she realized she was probably just standing here gazing into his eyes while her whole family stood there and watched. He cheeks heated and Eris’ smirk grew.

“I asked you for a dance, lady…?”

“Y/n, you do not have to dance with him. Honestly, you don’t even have to talk to him.” Rhys said.

“Y/n...” She hated how much she liked her name falling from his lips. “Just once dance, Lady Y/n, and I’ll share what I know of the Spring Court in our meeting this evening.” Still smirking, he held out a hand.

“Fine.” Y/n unceremoniously slapped her hand into his. Just because she was practically vibrating with anticipation of being so close to the male, didn’t mean he needed to know that. And neither did her family. For all anyone else knew, she hated Eris as much as they all did. She certainly should if she knew what was good for her. Gods, what was wrong with her!?

That smirk turned into a cocky grin as Eris led Y/n to the dance floor. He tugged on her hand still held in his and pulled her close to his body. Not pressing against her, but close enough that she could feel the heat coming off his body. He was unnaturally hot being a fire wielder, but Y/n never minded the heat. Even found herself having to hold back from pressing every inch of her against the warmth. He stood close to a foot taller than her, and she had to tilt her head up to lock eyes with him. She was met with amber eyes dancing with amusement, and he was met with a cold hard glare.

Eris blew out a soft laugh and asked, “why, little dove, do you hate me so much? We don’t even know each other yet.”

Y/n tried not to linger on the ‘yet’ as she leveled him an incredulous glare. “You mean aside from the fact that you chased my sister across a frozen lake, blasting fire at her and then restrained her with said fire?”

He had the audacity to laugh again. “Yes, Y/n, aside from that. I would very much like to know you. You hating me makes that slightly difficult.”

Gods that smirk. Y/n was trying to think straight as he floated her around the dance floor like it was nothing. She hoped he didn’t realize she was using her magic to keep herself from tripping over her own feet or stepping on his. He was such a beautiful dancer. And the truth was, she wanted to know him too. But instead she said, “you use your gift of fire to hurt others. You use that delicate flame to inflict pain and fear.” She desperately hoped her voice was staying steady, but then he scoffed at her and the leash she had on her temper slipped from her fingers. She feels her voice raising and her cheeks heating as she goes on. “Fire is not meant to cause pain, Eris!”

He halts their movement. That was enough to make her blink and remember where they were. Her eyes and her voice soften as she tries to look straight into his soul and speak directly to it. Her hands drift to hold both of his in her much smaller ones. “Fire is beautiful and lovely and soft and warm. Fire is nurturing and breathes life into everything. Fire is a gentle protector and a kind companion. I am so sorry someone told you otherwise and that you’ve been told to use it as a weapon.” He just blinked at her for what felt like an eternity. Suddenly the music stops, and the room erupts into applause for the musicians. “Eris…?” Y/n sys his name as gently as she can, but he pulled away from her so fast and muttered an ‘excuse me’ before he turned on his heels and practically ran out of the ball room.

Y/n stands there until someone accidently bumps into her and jolts her out of her head and back into her body. Slowly, she makes her way back to the dais staring at her feet, still not totally present. She looks up when she reaches her family only to see them all with a hand over their mouth to choke back a laugh. “What?” Y/n’s brow scrunches and she tilts her head in confusion.

Cassian is the first to break, laughing so loud a few partygoers jump and glasses shatter. The next is Mor, and finally, Feyre asks through tears in her eyes and a barely concealed giggle, “What the hell did you say to him!?”

Y/n just took her spot on the dais next to Feyre and Rhys as they laughed and laughed together and resumed staring at the floor trying not to be eager to see Eris at the meeting later this evening.

Eris’ POV

He had to get out of there. Had to get out of that room that felt too similar to under the mountain and away from that female who was far too gentle and kind to be anywhere near him. ‘The Mother must really hate me’ he thinks as he reaches the city’s edge and can finally breathe again. He knew the shadowsinger would find him soon and call for the meeting, but before then he needed to regain his composure. Y/n didn’t need to use her power to stop his breathing and make his heart race.

He took a few deep breaths and the shaking in his hands and the ache in his chest eased slightly. His mind drifted to the feeling of her in his arms, how well they danced across the floor together and how lovely her hands felt pressed to his chest. ‘Fire is not meant to cause pain’ Y/n had said. The words had come from her mouth with such passion and determination that he almost believed her. He wanted to. Gods did he want to believe her and her kind words and her cold calloused hands that soothed his burning skin. There was no way for Y/n to have known his father had struck him across the chest just this morning. A show of power after his father bested him during sparring. The punishment for winning would have been far more gruesome. Y/n’s cold unassuming hand placed directly over where his father’s had left the flesh raw and painful. Her lovely hand placed there while she looked him in the eyes and told him that fire wasn’t meant to cause pain and that she was sorry. He couldn’t believe she was real, and his need to know her just grew tenfold. But he wasn’t good enough for her. He wasn’t good. He should keep his distance and save her the misery of his company again.

Eris was dreading the mask he would dawn in this meeting and the monster she would think of him as afterward. A shadow wrapped around his wrist and tugged. It was time. Eris schooled his features into the calm, bored, arrogant heir, winnowed back into the halls of the palace, and sauntered his way into the meeting.

Y/n’s POV

The meeting was nothing of what Y/n expected. Eris came in, and straight up avoided eye contact with her. She couldn’t lie, that stung a bit.

He sat across from Rhys, but looked to Mor with a knowing glint in his eye and said, “you look well, Mor.”

“You don’t speak to her,” Azriel said softly.

Eris gave a bitter smile. “I see you’re still holding a grudge.”

Y/n was so confused.

“This arrangement, Eris,” Rhys spoke, “relies solely upon you keeping your mouth shut.”

Eris huffed a laugh. “And haven’t I done an excellent job? Not even my father suspected when I left tonight.”

Feyre glanced between her mate and Eris. “How did this come about?”

Apparently, Feyre was just as lost as you were.

Eris explains that he caught Azriel’s shadows snooping around the Autumn court after they returned from the frozen lake, and that his brothers ‘mysteriously’ forgot about Feyre’s powers. He said that he had taught himself a few things about daemati powers and how to block them out. He says that he didn’t tell his father because he knew that Baron would want to hunt Feyre down and kill her for his belief that she stole part of his power. He doesn’t believe that Baron knows just how much of a threat Hybern is, but that he wont join forces with them if he finds out about Feyre’s powers.

“So what’s the asking price for you silence then, Eris?” Mor demanded. “Another little bride for you to torture?”

All the blood drained from Y/n’s face as her eyes darted between Mor and Eris. Her head hurt from trying to put this puzzle together without having all the pieces. She knew that Mor’s father had tried to marry her off and Mor took control of her own fate by sleeping with Cassian, but she hadn’t known the male she was sold off to was supposed to be Eris. The pounding in her head did not cease.

Something flickered in Eris’ eyes. “I don’t know who fed you those lies to begin with, Morrigan,” he said with vicious calm. “Likely the bastards you surround yourself with.”

A sneer from Azriel. And a sharp intake of breath from Y/n. If he had looked at her she would have seen the brief flash of guilt in his eyes.

Mor snarled, rattling the glasses. “You never gave any evidence to the contrary. Certainly not when you left me in those woods.”

“There were forces at work that you have never considered,” Eris said coldly. “And I am not going to waste my breath explaining them to you. Believe what you want about me.”

“You hunted me like an animal,” Feyre cut in. “I think we will choose to believe the worst.”

Y/n didn’t know how to feel. Couldn’t think of anything to say or do, so she just dropped her gaze to the floor. She shouldn’t come to Eris’ defense. She just met the male and apparently her gut feeling about him was wrong. Her family hated him and he hurt Mor. Something didn’t feel right, but what would she even say? There were literal centuries of bad blood between her found family and this male who for some gods forsaken reason, she couldn’t stop thinking about. This arrogant, spiteful, male who attacked her sister! Not just Feyre it seems, but Mor as well. Even if he didn’t have direct hand in harming her, he didn’t help her. Why didn’t he help her? Her head was still spinning trying to sort through all these conflicting feelings. She felt like she needed to come to Eris’ defense, but why? Maybe because she felt deep down in her soul that no one ever had. She could feel that he was good, so why were his actions such the opposite? The pounding in her head wouldn’t stop and she felt as if she might faint. The conversation starting to sound like they were underwater.

“I was given and order. And sent to do it with two of my…brothers.”

“And what of the brother you hunted down alongside me? The one whose lover you helped to execute before his eyes?” Feyre accused.

Eris slammed a hand on the table, which did nothing to help Y/n headache. No one seemed to notice her flinch and start to sway. “You know nothing about what happened that day. Nothing.”

“Indulge me,” was all Feyre said in response.

“How do you think he made it to the Spring border,” Eris’ voice had returned to its normal low and sharp nature. “I wasn’t there- when they did it. Ask him. I refused. It was the firs and only time I have denied my father anything. He punished me. And by the time I got free… They were going to kill him too. I made sure they didn’t. Made sure Tamlin got word- anonymously- to get the hell over to his own border.” Eris picked at a stray thread on his jacket, “not all of us were as lucky in our friends and family as you, Rhysand.”

Sharp, stabbing, shooting pain ran through Y/n’s head and it was so surprising that she let out a yelp as she dropped to the floor, and everything went black. The last thing she remembered hearing was the voice of Eris’ panicked voice crying her name.

After managing to keep away from social media for almost two months, here comes Agatha All Along sucking me back in 🙃 I want to rewatch the whole thing and see how many details I can catch, but I guess I might as well go through Agatha's scenes in Wandavision first. and you guys are coming with me!! we can all hyperfixate together (spoilers from both WV and AAA below. this is going to be just a stream of consciousness as I go through scenes, don't expect anything elaborate)

SO.

Agatha arrives in Westview attracted by Wanda's Hex. She might already suspect she's dealing with the Scarlet Witch because lbr, who has that sort of power? She takes a calculated risk to come investigate (detective Agnes of Westview on the case!) It's funny that her calculated risks are always way more emotional than she'd admit, because who in their right mind comes after the SW? But all that power is too alluring, so Agatha takes possession of Ralph's house, ruins the market value adding a creepy basement and brainwashes him into being her husband/minion/pet.

And now it's time to do what she does best, con artist is gonna con! I adore that Agatha became one of the most infamous witches in history thanks mostly to her improv skills.

She's a magical gal is a small time locale!! he's a husband who's part machiiiiiine (great now it'll get stuck in my head again)

worth nothing that both witches and androids have historically and culturally been used as queer allegories, and here's a very sapphic witch pretending to be a straight 1950s housewife and another witch who's got an elaborate fantasy going on where her husband is able to pass and all their problems are sitcom-level fixable.

episode 2: Agatha keeps being a menace

And knowing now that she's always playing a part and her real personality is much more emo makes it easier to spot when she slips out of character

I'm betting that this was Agatha rather than Agnes too. she's so miserable lol. she hates playing this part so much. and that wig is hideous

not Agatha casually planting the idea of children in Wanda's head. She probably was the one making people chant "for the children" too. literally manipulating Wanda into showing her if she can create life, calculated risk my ass, she's out here playing with fire

(does that mean that Agatha is a liiiiiiitle bit Billy's and Tommy's parent too?? she planTED the sEED. hear me OUT.)

you know she was dead inside at having to sit through the whole talent show. she probably took it out on the contestants and made them trip onstage or something

Episode 3 of pappappa pappappa wandavision!

Agatha helping Wanda to pick baby clothes, I'm going to sob. (look at this technicolor filter! modern shows CAN color their shit! it's just that they'd rather make everything look like muddy ass instead)

not much from Agatha this episode except scheming to get Monica kicked out of the Hex, seeing as she's the biggest obstacle between herself and Wanda ('s powers). Also you know she was stalking the house to keep track of when the babies were born. Also also, the painted scenery! Like mother like son, it's such a big hint about the nature of the Road.

look at this piece of shit, I love her so much. And she does tend to wink when she's just told a truly egregious lie, doesn't she? it's like her little signature.

Agatha in episode 5 coming in like: LEMME SEE THOSE BABIESSSSSSS

kathryn hahn with 80s curls is doing something to me, let me tell you

so manipulative, in so many ways. and knowing what we know now about Agatha and children, imagine the turmoil inside of her!! triumph at having confirmation of Wanda's life-giving powers. nervousness about the mess she's putting herself in. exasperation at having to keep up the charade. and, most importantly, getting to HOLD A BABY BOY AFTER ALL THIS TIME (amazing, terrifying, traumatic, wonderful)

what is she doiiiing. this bitch, I swear.

OH MY GAWD I FORGOT WANDA SAID THIS. "so she keeps coming at me like a cat in heat, that's not her fault Vision, she has a Medical Condition"

"kids. can't control them. no matter how hard you try"??????? the suddenly wistful voice?????????????????????? why don't I fling myself off a cliff?????????????????? was this woman actually honestly dying inside while still having to play pretend, I can't, I cannot. And how much of Agatha's backstory was decided at this point, was Kathryn given a general idea?

Agatha and Billy, partners in crime already! Seriously, Jac Schaeffer must have had an idea of where this was going. And it's obvious in retrospect that Agatha would be drawn to Billy the most, he's a witch unlike Tommy and he's such a polite, sweet little fellow, he probably reminded her of Nicky so much?? Here's this scary dangerous witch who on one side is planning to murder everyone in the room, and on the other is fighting back the urge to go full mama bear on this kid and protect and cherish him forever. This is not what she signed up for when she decided to stalk Wanda!

She is so horrible. She is despicable. I'm allowed to say it because I love her so much! I can't remember, was it revealed that she turned a fly into a dog or something? Or did she kidnap a dog dog from a shelter / someone's garden and then stone cold killed him? No, wait, she made Ralph kill him. Do your own killing of cute innocent little creatures, you coward! Love that vest tho.

"Fix the dead!" "You can do that?" And of course she's pretending here but you know that's EXACTLY what this whole sordid Sparky affair was about, she's testing and prodding at Wanda's powers, trying to figure out her limits. There's an eagerness here that she doesn't need to fake. Who knows, maybe she was actually squeamish about killing the dog (she does have a cuddly bunny and woves him vewy much), hence why Ralph had to do it. But more importantly even if she didn't like killing a pet, even if she wasn't happy about traumatizing these kids - that's exactly what she's doing here, she's willingly hurting two children - she went and did it anyway, because her thirst for Wanda's powers is too big. She kills witches out of anger, out of fear and self-preservation. She is ultimately a selfish person, and that is what makes her a villain. It's not that she doesn't have feelings. She has plenty of feelings, she has a conscience, and she chooses to do the bad thing anyway.

"And we can't reverse death. No matter how sad it makes us. Okay? Some things are forever." These two shows above all else are about grief. You can peel this scene and find more and more layers, it was about the kids losing Sparky at first but also about Wanda losing Pietro, Wanda losing Vision, Wanda losing the kids. And it's also, DEFINITELY about Agatha losing Nicky. I need a drink.

I loved this chapter. When I say loved I mean LOVED-

Starting off strong with Hanako! Long time no see~

And professor Yugi. I fear he totally mogged Hanako. Scrumptious art, amazing colors and it gives off such a vibe y'know? With the blue and green scheme, tentacles (that are hella cool omg) and chemistry them it looks amazing! Professor Yugi veeery different from Hanako and I just love everything that revolves around him!

These two illustration are so mystery-ish. Like with the window and clock behind them it makes it look like they're straight out from a detective game? Reminds me of really early tbhk, I missed this!

Anyway back onto the chapter!

Let's say I'm super happy with what we got this month! To be honest, I think that getting a bit of a pause in the story was the best thing they could've happened. Like getting a bit of time to rest and prepare for what's to come and most importantly getting some focus on our protagonist's train of thoughts!!

Focusing on Nene alone is super interesting since she was kinda on the sidelines in the previous chapters and with all the crazy stuff that happened and all the responsibility falling on her shoulders... Seeing her processing everything was really needed.

Getting this scene? I was soooo HAPPY. Her just being helpless for a moment cuz she's been holding it to stay strong for so long.

She's just a normal person in the end, with everyone's lives on her shoulders, a task to accomplish when she doesn't know how and above everything she's all by herself this time. She always had someone to rely on before, but not anymore. No one to guide her. No one to save her. No one by her side. So she breaks down and god yeah how I wanted to see this! I'm literally crying tears of joy.

TSU.CHI.GO.MO.RI IS BAAAACK. Him being the one to appear and offer reassurance to Nene during this "break" in the course of events is really peak. Cuz y'know, maybe it's just me but teachers always have something reassuring about them. Like they're adults and I guess having an adult with you makes you feel safe? It's like...they're supposed to have control on any situation (or rather give off this impression), and handle stuff you can't when you're a kid(?) And Tsuchigomori is just the kind of teacher that gives off vibes that make you feel safe and makes you look...out of the frame and think of what you can do instead of how you can't??? Idk if I make sense lol. So yeah having this kind of calm character running into Nene when she's in such a difficult situation is amazing.

Her having a hard time accepting Hanako's fate in this timeline is so...on point. She doesn't want to think about it. She won't accept that the person Hanako got to become in the future murdered her friends. Not Hanako. Not the playful boy she could always rely on. Not the one person that made true love bloom in her heart for the first time.

She doesn't know everything, so she probably doesn't know the person she confronted in the red house isn't exactly who Amane grew up to be (if we're assuming professor Yugi isn't aware at 100% of what he's doing/ possessed or at least not in the "right" state of mind). So she probably just thinks Hanako becomes this and she's horrified..

Imagine having the same colour palette as your Ex-lover aka enemy aka the person who wants to subjugate the entire magical dimension and wants to destroy everyone you care about.

You mean one of the greatest design decisions of all time?????

It's almost like they're implying certain things about the characters (or well, Griffin at least since he was always wearing that same outfit but she made some changes to her wardrobe) if you believe this shared color palette was intentional. Which... how are you going to invent almost the exact same color palette accidentally and for the same show, for characters who not only interact, but used to be partners? This does not sound like a coincidence at all. So then we're left with the question of what was going through Griffin's head when she switched to his color scheme after the final battle on Domino.

Take a look:

Her first outfit from when she actually worked with Valtor is purple but it is a completely different shade from his purple and there's no red in sight. In fact, her hair color is closest to any of the colors he wears, particularly the shade of his pants and vest.

Later in her battle outfit from SotLK the purple is almost completely gone, replaced by a light blue that turns into very light purple that's barely present in her outfit during the show. Seems like she was trying to escape from her association with Valtor. Except for the cape that is starting to suspiciously remind of Valtor's coat as it is mere shades away from being the exact same color.

And then:

MA'AM?????? Did you steal his clothes????????? Is this some elaborate ritual of mourning - making yourself a living, walking shrine of this man you betrayed?!?!?!?!?!?! It's almost like she said "I cannot bear the thought of there not being any part of Valtor left in the world. Guess I'll start dressing in his colors to literally wear the memory of him and that would be the way the entire world sees me, forever."

Oh, they were insane for this!

P.S. My headcanon is that she started wearing gloves because she hates the mark she's left on the world. Sort of like a subconscious impulse to stop leaving her fingerprints over everything she touches because she's done enough harm. And the gloves are light purple aka the only color that she wears that isn't also part of his color scheme. So it's like she realizes the negative impact their relationship had on all the rest of her interactions with the world which is why she's trying to distance herself from that in order to stop making the universe a worse place. But not only is her color scheme his color scheme but he also wears gloves so that's just another similarity (if only on the surface).

since i've been playing slarpg here's my thoughts on it so far!

i'd give it like, a B. i like the characters their interactions are fun. the combat is really cool and i like the worldbuilding. the music is wonderful and the pixelart is beautiful.

just. the plot feels like it moves really fast and the characters are constantly making assumptions and then rolling with them and you're supposed to roll with them too.

like, after they meet javis for the first time, they just assume everything evil that happens is his fault but we don't even know if he's evil. it goes from "we should go find javis and talk to him to make sure he's not evil" to "jodie's looking for a mysterious figure that's been lurking in the woods? that could be javis!" to "these guys are frozen in ice? this must be javis' doing!" even though he's. a video tape. not an ice mage. and we don't even know what he wants. and we don't even know if the hooded figure that was seen here was javis. why is that your first thought. like the characters say something COULD be true, and you're supposed to take it as "this is DEFINITELY true" and they take it as that too.

and then in the celestial desert it's the same thing - "glyph was reprogrammed to be evil? that must have been javis!" all you know about him is that you walked into his house and beat up all his employees and he got mad at you for it. why do you assume every bad thing that happens is his fault.

verena introduces herself and says that she's fortuna and faith goes from "should we believe her?" to "i have every reason to believe her" can you tell me those reasons? from my perspective someone just showed up and claimed to be your god even though she looks nothing like her, and you just said yeah okay that seems true.

and the whole "send me your strongest warriors and i won't destroy your planet" thing just feels like a cheap way to give us a fighting chance against Literal God. and the novas were like "but who else could possibly do it... we may have just started two days ago but we're the only people who qualify" dude i dunno what about, say, the fucking paladin brigade? holly and provence and the one that likes swords whose name I forgot because I only spoke to him in act 1? allison's mom? fucking, bartholomew even???

malady harmony just feels like badeline from celeste but as a fox. she talks the same way, she has the exact same color scheme, she's the same concept. and she kind of just came out of nowhere. the explanation given for her existence wasn't an explanation at all.

i feel like there could have been some tension buildup to the fight with allison but i did think that part was kind of cool. the way malady gets melody all riled up right before allison arrives leading to something of an outburst.

Why Pavel is Important:

AKA Why Cheth and Phaedra need therapy and Phantomarine won’t leave my head--

The sheer importance of Pavel as a character and what he does hit me very hard today and I needed to share.

Cheth the Red Tide King is an ageless being who has been betrayed, mutilated, and discredited for a comparatively short 500 years out of his thousands. Everything he was, everything he had, taken away by someone who was supposed to be his equal and someone who his feelings about seem to be very... complicated. Even then, he didn’t even get to die, just watch as more as more was stripped away so not even the people’s memory of him remained unwrapped. His only company was himself... and a few fleeting moments with people who feared and hated him. If that didn’t fuck him up a bit, nothing could.

If he was to be made the villain until some nebulous future that might not even come, why not lean into it and have at least a shred of vengeance and amusement? The perfect target is right there, after all, a royal line dedicated to the church that sullies his memory with lies is right there. Why *not* torment them when they pass, why not make those ruthless bloodthirsty puppets feel despair? After all, he knows who is calling the shots. He knows she doesn’t care one bit once she can no longer use them...

The Red Tide surrounded and transported at least three sea bite victims to shore that we know of, however. Doubtless there are many more lives he has tried to save from a painful and premature death. But he can only be so many places at once... And it is rather telling that every seabite victim we have seen so far has been a child.

He thought Phaedra no better than a tyrant early in her reign when she came down to his domain. That she could not possibly know the loss that had occurred because of her people’s actions. That none of her line could, because ***she*** was pulling the strings... And of course, she would never trust him, so to get her to do anything, of course he had to lie. She had been manipulated all her life and was clearly none the wiser, even now when contradictions begin arising. And really, he has no patience for it anymore, for stubborn fools who refuse to hear him.... and Cheth is far too out of practice to do anything about this himself.

Phaedra is lugging around centuries of religious propaganda and pressure, as well as being young, inexperienced, and grieving the loss of her father. Her whole life has been surrounded by the church and it’s teachings, of her future responsibilities in relation to them, who her immortal enemy was and who her biggest inspiration should be. She was very literally tailor-raised to hate Cheth. 

His actions don’t help alleviate this either. I doubt he was lying about being able to bring back only one soul, but not being clear about it broke what trust Phaedra was ever willing to put in the god. She was not nearly as hostile towards him until that little snag, and has seemed only to double down on this stance ever since, her color scheme changing from yellows to blues. She will find the most bad-faith read of his words and believe that to be the only correct answer. His penchant to not being completely clear and honest with his intentions also clearly vexes her.

Clearly though, she cares deeply about people. She took up her father’s tradition to ease the grieving. She was willing to do whatever it took to save her friends, and feels incredible guilt for ‘dooming’ them to a these last months of not-quite-life. She wants to help people, really help them... but she can only see ‘help’ in such a narrow worldview and has been taught there are some people you just shouldn’t help.

And then... there’s Pavel. And the very first thing we learn about him is that the boy has more heart than sense. Vanna raised him well, but the kind of deep empathy to care for the very beings that killed his father and basically gave him a terminal disease with heavy stigmas that forced him to leave the life he loved for ***seven years*** takes a little more than teaching.

Pavel has defended almost every single being that has harmed him.

He understood that sea ghosts just couldn’t stop themselves and that they were people once because he trusted his mother and her research. He understood that his friend Eddy was scared and alone and lashing out because of that. He questioned and pushed back against Sofia’s manipulations and the bad faith readings of the Mantaluna crew, but tried to understand that they must be having a pretty hard time. He told the Manta Princess to her face that *Cheth was hurting too* and asked a literal deity to be nicer to the biggest pain in his neck.

This little boy is a critical bridge. He can just *feel* when people are coming from a place of genuine care or hurt and tries to explain that to others who are being overly harsh in his opinion. There is a reason he is neither Cheth’s nor Phaedra’s color scheme. *This tiny boy is the one neutral party that both of these stubborn powerful people will listen to, now.*

Phaedra only turned sour when the talk got a little too close to questioning the very foundation of her beliefs, and she just went cold and tried to make Pavel change the subject. She was so relieved to know she hadn’t hurt him, wanted to do everything she could to make him comfortable and did not even question if they should help him get somewhere safe. And Cheth... Cheth loves children and hates having to welcome a single one into his collection, I think. He tried to mock Phaedra with how many *orphans* her father’s last battle created. He became *angry* and cold at even the implication that he would have lied to Pavel. And Cheth does everything he can to make sure a child survives a sea ghost attack.

Without Pavel... neither of these two have any hope of working through their shit, because neither of them are able to view the other and their reactions clearly. Cheth IS AN ASSHOLE AND VINDICTIVE. Phae IS NAIVE AND OVERZEALOUS. And Pavel is the once person who can read them both as say it like it is. And that is going to make for one hell of a boat ride.

Under the Microscope

This is such a neatly made little historical drama, based on an actual case from the Ming dynasty, that you could absolutely binge-watch it in a day or two (just 14 eps). What starts as a simple math problem, a discrepancy in numbers between the actual field measurements and what is written in the registry reports, later blooms into a huge case of corruption on different levels of the government system in 8 different counties along with tax evasion, murders, false witnesses, and whatnot.

Chinese bureaucratic system of that period seems like a real nightmare, even more so, when someone is trying to investigate a case (and, in many ways, things really haven't changed that much in modern times). The story revolves around Shuai Jia Mo, a math genius who lacks social skills and is probably mildly autistic. His parents die in a fire under mysterious circumstances. All he's left with are a few memories and the number 3530, which turns out to be the exact number of taxes his whole county is paying out of thin air. No one knows where the tax came from and why people have to pay it, so he starts the investigation with the help of his friend. Naturally, all the powers involved try to silence them as soon as possible.

I really had no idea a show about ancient Chinese taxes could be so captivating - mostly thanks to a well-written plot and superb acting, as well as interesting, shrewd, and excessively scheming characters. I guess this is a story more about human nature, that's why it's so relatable today, and the quest for justice, because for each bad and greedy person out there in the world, there is one with a pure heart and soul who wants to do good. And sometimes, that person could actually win (well, at least in a cdrama :)

We see quite a few charismatic faces here. Wang Yang (Teng Zijing in JOL) seems to be very compatible with Zhang Ruoyun. Here he starts as an antagonist, Cheng Renqing, a lawyer who defends anyone who pays him more (in this case, the bad guys). For a good half of the show, he's just an increasingly annoying lil' shit with a broad smile and a sharp tongue, but then things change, we get to know his story, and he turns to our boy's side eventually. Wu Gang (Chen PingPing from Joy of Life) is a welcome treat no matter what role he takes. He's so good at playing skin-crawling bad guys, it's just remarkable. I also fell in love with Feng Biyu, a feisty lady-owner of a meat shop, who can beat the hell out of quite a few bullies who go after her little bro and the ML.

Needless to say, Zhang Ruoyun's performance was top-notch. I can't imagine how hard it is to depict such a character - but I totally believed him! Both his math genius side and the slightly autistic side. It actually leads to some pretty funny scenes because of how straightforward he is, not understanding the intricacies of human behavior (and the lies and the games between people).

I was not-really-surprised to hear Liu Yuning's voice at the ending OST of the series (the guy is literally everywhere:) but ah, he's just such a good singer and the song really got me hooked from the first notes. I also want to say that style-wise the show is quite beautifully made, too. It's a true-to-life historical depiction of the Ming period, but the shots, the light, the colors - everything was just very pretty!

The show is a kind of detective case story about tax evasion, but the characters make it very alive and entertaining to watch. There's some drama sprinkled with a bit of comedy, some math, 0,1% romance, but everything comes together so nicely that you really don't have any complaints in the end. The show is exactly what it promises to be, not overlapping with other genres. I, personally, was in the mood for it and it's definitely a 10/10 for me.

I'm gonna, like, preface this by saying that I'm talking completely from the heart and also (despite everything and my various stints into this fandom) I don't actually understand the lore of the Sonic series, let alone Shadow. I've also only ever played four games in the series, besides the occasional scratch level copy, I haven't finished any of them, and they are Sonic Colors, Sonic and the Secret Rings, The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog, and this one weird handheld Olympics thing which I WISH I still had or at least wish I knew the name of.

Basically, I really like the storyline shadow has in Adventure Two (at least from what I understand of it), and though I get really lost lore wise in the main games after that, I still like most of what I've heard. Also, I really love his gun and motorcycle, they are so funny and also so cool and I love him.

I don't really like him that much in boom, but I really love his design, and tbh I've only watched the first season of Boom so far and he only shows up once, so I don't really know much about differences there yet. I liked his animation really well though!

He's probably my second or third favorite movie character (battling for Sonic, as always. heh), with Knuckles in first, but I really liked him in the new movie! I love his design, and even though I'm low key not a super fan of his voice acting there, I still think it sounds pretty good and suits him well! I LOVED his design in the movie, literally squeaking and rocking back in forth in the theater, I'm afraid. XD

I went in 90% blind. How do you go in blind when you've read the books and seen/listened the musical? Ignore all press releases, ads, and especially the Down the Yellow Brick Pod patreon group chat. I knew the beats and my low bar was at Oz The Great and Powerful, which is one bar below NBC's Emerald City. All I asked was that it understood the musical/book point and it's relation to other Oz media and it DELIVERED SO WELL. Sometimes in Oz media I go "so is this in my headcanon of Oz time or its own bubble universe" AND THIS ONE WAS IN MY HEADCANON.

The sets were superb, the costumes were superb, the dancing was superb I swear to god I dreamt about the Dancing Through Life choreography on the eve of my Saturn Return. I am not a singing expert and have historically inadvertently loved bad musical singing but I LIKED IT TOO.

My only complaint was how CG the monkey transformation sequence was for all its practical set pieces otherwise (I also know Maguire's monkey lore diverges from the Baum books but all Maguire/Baum divergence I accept long ago). Can you imagine if Henson Creature Shop was brought in just for one brutal stop mo/computer enhanced animatronic moment to add some Return to Oz/39 flying monkey terror? It would have been superb.

Oscar Diggs' characterization, called by name, was 10/10 just Jeff Goldblum as a charlatan pretending to be Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The poppy sleeping bit, the hard-core lore map, the desert's edge where any other musical heroine would be singing on an ocean cliff. This movie KNEW ITS OZ. "But the Munchkins aren't wearing blue" well one that's to connect this to the 39 film and because THIS IS AN INTEGRATED OZ THEY ARE MIXING COLORS AND SIGNIFICANTLY THERE ARE ONLY 5 COLOR SCHEMES THE ENSEMBLE ARE WEARING and also THAT SPECIFIC ENSEMBLE IS A DYING VILLAGE AT A HUB OF TEXTILE IMPORT AND EXPORT WHICH CHECKS OFF MY NEED FOR TEXTILE WORK TO BE PRESENT IN A FANTASY WORLD IN THE WHOLE FIRST SCENE

so yes I adored it, for a whole slew of other reasons I also felt seen by it a movie and it is so rare a movie I am seeing sees me back. This was one for the undiagnosed neurodivergent girls who had an affinity with Elphaba in the 2010s, this one was for the girls who wrote this comic the morning before, unknowing that Elphaba would find strength in accepting her emotional inner child at the film's climax:

Also this felt like a movie movie. My dad said "Did it feel like seeing Wizard of Oz for the first time?" and to be honest, yes? Wizard of Oz for the first time and also the world I have played in and lived in for 18 years now in high def color? I also was by myself in the second row to the screen, chair leaned way back to see everything, and absolutely overstimulated by feeling like I could walk right into my favorite fantasy world. I paid $13 to see a 2.5 hour musical and tbh? I got my money's worth.

Yes Boq SHOULD BE ALIVE TO GREET DOROTHY ON HER FIRST NIGHT IN MUNCHKINLAND but Maguire reflects this in the book and the stage musical mushes Boq and Nick Chopper together, but as two witches get mushed together to make Glinda in the 39 film it's sorta in character. tangentially related to my last post: a little irl story. so me and some irls are going to go as monster high characters for halloween. we were all debating on who we WANTED to do and who we could AFFORD, and I was fucking going through it. i prefer to dress more masculinely, but oh my GOD so many of the masc monster high outfits are FUUUUGGGLLLYYYYYYY! and for the fem characters, I just dont like dressing that way, and a lot of the outfits would probably make my sensory issues go nuts.

so im like, fuck, what do i even do?? sitting on the grass next to my friends flipping my entire lid. i wanted to do ghoulia real bad, bc i love her color scheme and general demeanor, but i just couldnt fathom actually dressing LIKE HER.

and my friend, my amazing fucking friend, just turns to me, and in a complete deadpan goes "dude. just do a masc version of ghoulia. like draw it up and everything, I know you can"

Quinn and Timm: An Analysis

Quinn x Timm is probably the most popular non-canon ship in the Papa Louie series. Even if you don't ship them, if you're in the fandom, you know about them. Drama, fluff, everything in-between, fanart, fanfics, these two have it all. Why is everyone bonkers bananas over these bitches? Because they are iconic. And I am here to talk about them, at length. Strap in. Please take this all with a grain of salt I like being unhinged about Papa's lore so /silly!!! Also I know I have mutuals who don't ship them romantically and that is okay LOL I just want to talk about their dynamic and drama regardless of shipping anyways.

1. When Pizzas Attack/Taco Mia!

Timm is one of the OG’s. We had to rescue his damsel-in-distress ass in Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack, and from then on he became a loyal and iconic customer. He exists.  Quinn is a character introduced in Taco Mia!. She's Tacodale's top lawyer, and she's cool as fuck. Taco Mia! is where we first see Quinn, Timm and Associates in the form of a lovely…disgustingly garish lime green billboard that sometimes appears at the beginning of each day in the game:

Timm finally has a purpose! Good job, buddy. So, they’re partners. Law partners. They’re lawyers, and they own a law firm together. Note: Timm’s up there too, so he’s more or less equally as important as Quinn is. TLDR; They’re big fucking deals. What we can deduce from this is they’re made for each other. Okay, literally, lovey-dovey shit aside: Their names rhyme. They got the cute little double letter thing going on. Look at their peanut butter and jelly ass color scheme. Pretty solid symbolism for a food game. They go together.

2. Freezeria Freezeria is released a few months after Taco Mia. It’s iconic. It’s great. Also play Freezeria Deluxe it's out now. That’s pretty sweet. Anyways…

Hey, wait, where the fuck is Timm? Where is that lovable receding hairline bastard when you need him? Man. Come on. I wanted to make him a sundae. This sucks.

Oh, well, Quinn is here though... So, Timm is completely absent from the original Freezeria (along with a few other customers, but this isn’t about them). Apparently Timm was too busy getting his hair did or something.

IIRC there were explanations as to why they weren’t here, but I’m not even sure if it’s fanon or official, so…euhhh? "Alright, hey Flipline, you JUST got me acquainted with this duo, and now you take them away from me? " Well, get used to it, bitch. 3. Pancakeria/Flipdecks Holy SHIT Timm is back and WHY DO YOU LOOK LIKE THAT?? I think it’s around this time that Flipline starts making flipdecks, and great timing, because they better explain what the hell happened to this man.

Quinn and Timm’s flipdecks are made pretty close together, with Quinn’s being the 8th and Timm’s being the 10th. We're given their lore back-to-back, which is just #tragic. Anyway:

Quinn’s flipdeck:

"Quinn is one of the top lawyers in town, and offers legal representation for Papa Louie and his many franchises. Her law firm is now called “Just Quinn and Associates” after her longtime partner Timm abruptly left. Quinn only finds time once a week to dine out, and can be extra picky with her meals."

Timm’s flipdeck: "Timm has been a loyal customer of Papa Louie since the very beginning. Always keeping up with the times, Timm has been evolving his look throughout the years. He finally quit his job at "Quinn, Timm, and Associates" to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a world champion dancer." So they split up. Timm left his stinking dead end job with no warning and Quinn is (reasonably) pretty upset by this. Okay, admittedly, not much is divulged here, so we have to do a lot of reading between the lines.

Timm’s flipdeck is entirely self-centered. It doesn’t even really mention Quinn herself at all, just the law firm and how he was happy to get the fuck out of dodge.

Also, “finally”... How long has this man been sitting on this decision? Dude’s been in court like “god I hate it here” for god knows how long. He hated his job and wanted to do something else. Okay, fair enough, dude. Be free.

Quinn’s on the other hand…

Note how Timm is described as “her longtime partner”.

“Longtime partner”--how long did these two work together? I feel like this wording is pretty emotionally charged, not to mention that “partner” is a word with several meanings. I understand that they’re lawyers, but like…come on. It doesn’t help that Quinn treats this split like a messy breakup by renaming the law firm to “JUST Quinn and Associates” "Yep. Just me! All by myself! I’m gonna put it up on my big pretentious clock tower with big bold letters."

Can you blame her, though? I mean, that was a massive dick move on Timm’s behalf. Even if you love Timm—and I do–he was...not the best here. And it’s clear by the wording of her flipdeck that Quinn didn’t know about it. SAD! So, when did they split up?

Most likely between the events of Taco Mia and Pancakeria. Considering that Timm was absent during Freezeria, we can safely assume that things were already over by then, considering he comes waltzing into the Pancakeria with his new look and all afterwards. 4. BAKERIA

It's 2016 and Timm's a chef! Wait. Okay. Timm is a chef now. Which is really funny when you think about it. He went from being a lawyer, possibly Papa’s lawyer since we know at least Quinn represents him, to being a “competitive dancer”, to…working for Papa for minimum wage.

So, Timm’s canonically a chef, which means…he has no choice but to interact with Quinn once a week. YOU WOULD THINK THAT SOMETHING WOULD COME OF THIS. AND NOTHING DOES. WHICH IS PROBABLY THE MOST FRUSTRATING SHIT EVER, SINCE WE ARE GOING ON A LITTLE OVER A DECADE LONG WITH THESE TWO. Longest slowburn ever am I right? Regardless of there being no canon evidence outside of gameplay mechanics, Timm and Quinn are interacting again. Nobody knows what this means, but I can tell you one thing: the ship was in it’s fucking renaissance and I personally was LIVING. 

YES. SERVE HER THAT PIE. OOOH THE TENSION!

Anyway, shipping aside, it would've been nice to see these two have...SOME sort of interaction, considering they were associated and all, and Quinn was hurt by his absence. But yeah, no, I guess not.

5. Mocharia

I've never played Mocharia and I probably never will, BUT WHAT I DO KNOW is that a bunch of the customers worked on the production of Mocharia Life. That's cute and all, but like... you know, I haven't seen anyone talk about this:

So, that's about it. I really wish that Flipline would give us some actual interaction between these two, and I don't really care what kind of interaction, just something. Given their history!!! SF6 Comic Thoughts:

(Spoilers) For those wondering at home why the dude became homeless in SF6, Ken Masters got suckered into a crypto scheme and is tanking his company and a developing country’s budget and his relationship with his son at the same time, and he almost gets politically assassinated by the end of this.

This rules.

Yeah this was great. Completely forgot this was even an Udon thing until I started writing this because this had like, a story, and dramatic tension, a major character facing consequences and minor characters getting attention, things happening besides boring basic pretext for fanservice and special moves which has basically never happened in an Udon Street Fighter comic. I like a lot that this is keeping things in limited scope so far.

Even Bengus’ art is pretty good here. I’m really not a fan of how Bengus’s art style looks nowadays, but the black-and-white heavy shadow palette really works here (seen some scans in color and, yeah just doesn’t hit as nicely), the stylization and paneling’s pretty great, idk man, it’s Bengus with a marginal budget and time to work on his art and having interesting material to work with. This has gotta be a breath of fresh air for the dude after years spent in the SFV mines.

Oh thank heavens the character in the poster isn’t Laura, sweet lord mercy I never want to see Laura again I know she’s coming back at some point but we’re good for now thanks

I’m really liking Mel as the other protagonist here. They’ve been sitting on Mel havin an expanded role since SF3 and here he’s given quite a lot more personality than I expected, lonely and frustrated by a sheltered upbringing and biting back against his father’s indecisiveness and immaturity, a pretty great foil for idiot manchild Luke to bounce off.

Mel Masters as he’s presented here is a frankly pretty terrific idea for a Street Fighter protagonist outside the games: someone who couldn’t be less impressed by street fighting but is bound by blood and circumstance to be a part of this, the anti-Sakura. An introspective kid who really just wants to go hang out with friends his age and play Pokemon, but who’s getting dragged through wolf-filled mountains and putting up with hyperactive fireball-tossing buff dudes because his dad is one of the greatest among them.

I like Luke quite a bit here. Not gonna touch the private military contractor thing here though, I feel like that’s a can of worms to unpack later, but if nothing else, Luke gets a lot more tolerable and even enjoyable when he has someone to bounce off even just visually, whether it’s Ryu or Jaime or the player character or Mel here. I think SF6 in game and here has settled Luke into maybe the best niche they could slot him in, described as “someone who likes to fight  but with no intention of getting stronger”. As in, the New Generation but not necessarily the protagonist, but rather the coach who’s showing the ropes for the protagonist, getting you used to the controls or pumping you up or teaching Mel how to improve his camping skills and etc (and in that context him being visually and personality-wise reminiscent of videogame streamers and E-sports celebrities is, a more logical and less grating decision, if nothing else, since those are the guys people go to nowadays in order to learn and improve at competitive videogames).

Curious as to what is Kalima’s deal given she’s making her debut here and what is her dynamic with JP, because I don’t think they’re quite retreading Kolin and it’s unclear as of yet how much is JP masterminding everything.

Zero clue as to who decided to have JP talk like a German cartoon here when he’s Russian and otherwise has little accent in-game. Would love it if they just revealed this was part of the ruse he was pulling on Ken and would even be in-character, since JP’s so far been defined as a duplicitous gamemaster, a brutal crimelord masquerading as a benevolent oligarch and someone who quite literally hides his winning hand the whole time he’s fighting you. I could buy that guy putting on a fake accent to trick a foolhardy American into underestimating him just enough to sweeten the pot.

In what is already a multi-layered scheme to ruin this guy and involves weaponizing the public spectacle of Street Fighter tournaments to leverage viral fame and, having a tragic child king beg Ken to fight in the tournament right in the middle of the guy having the worst time trying to manage his relationship with his son. JP is ice cold, I’m loving it. I’m loving this role he’s having as Ken’s biggest personalized enemy.

I’m loving having a Street Fighter villain who actually does have to take the slower route of planning and masterminding and backstabbing his murderous fighting tournament plots instead of just brute-forcing calling the fighters to take shots at him. JP seems significantly underpowered by fighting game villain standards, and this might make him dramatically more interesting as a villain proper.

I’m really liking the lengths that this is taking to ground Street Fighter in the here and now. IV and V took the Alpha route and moved the series onto a sort of comic book fantasyland where they’d never have to grapple with dates and timelines and so they could slide things into prequel territory, where as this seems closer to SF3 in that it wants to place Street Fighter firmly in the Now, with modern concerns and styles and changes to the world shaping the whole thing.

Almost didn’t think Street Fighter would ever bother telling a story with Ken that was actually about Ken and not just his relationship with Ryu. I’ve gone to bat for the guy before but this is easily the most interesting he’s ever been fucking ever, just this massive reversal of fortune grounded entirely in him finally not getting to have it both ways. His lore said he was facing “accusations of orchestrating a criminal plot” but little did we suspect he really DID assist in a huge criminal plot by sheer negligence. Bison would have pulled some ridiculous super brainwashing plot, but all JP had to do was just get Ken into crypto and hook him into a Nigerian Prince scam.

Ken wants a lot of things, he HAS a lot of things to deal with, and he can’t commit to any of them. He wants to be there for his son, but he can’t be there for what his son actually wants to do in life, so he drags his son into an anciliary role in his life instead. He wants to do right by the family name and company, so he blindly follows lifestyle mottos his dad used and tanks a billion dollars into a humanitarian project while constantly rejecting everyone who asks him to slow down or reconsider what exactly he’s sinking that money into.

He wants to use his privileged position to help those in need, so he funds a project intended to help a developing nation by, what else, a fighting tournament, and funds a nation into speedrunning through technological revolutions. He very clearly desperately wants to be a fighter in his prime again and do more than just fight “with paperwork”, and in the whole comic he only really comes alive when he gets to spin kick a drone, and he has this brief little moment when he has to will himself back into Business Mode to complete a deal with the least trustworthy man of all time, and the whole time he’s patently unsure about what he’s doing and the comic calls him out on it.

It calls him out on just how selfless this idea is and how much is it really about him wanting to help Nayshall’s uncertain future, and how much is it him desperately just trying to achieve something, or even deep down how much does he just want to fight again and feel good about something the way he does when he’s fighting, and the comic makes it clear it isn’t just one or the other. Ken has always been the guy who had everything, who had everything Ryu didn’t. In at least two games his plotline is “things are going great for Ken in his home life and company as usual, but he heard Ryu is showing up at the tournament so he’s dropping literally everything to go fight the one guy who makes fighting worthwhile for him”.

This is what happens when Ken’s character catches up to reality, of what it’s like for Ken Masters, immature carefree good-hearted fighting hothead, to try and manage being himself against being a global titan of philantropy and industry (and having had this entire thing thrust onto him from birth) and being a wholly attentive family man all at the same time. Something’s just gotta give. You can’t be as wealthy and connected as Ken and be irresponsive and impulsive and immature, no matter how well-intentioned or good you are. I’m frankly shocked that this went there at all after the trailers mostly implied Ken was just framed injustly.

Street Fighter has never ever even so much as gestured into the idea of Ken’s position and money as anything other than a point of contrast between him and Ryu, so to go from that to this where the whole thing’s predicated on the idea that Ken, while every bit as well-intentioned as ever and certainly a lot more mature than he’s ever been before, fucked up badly and is doing some real damage to people he cares for? That he tried to have everything and now stands on the precipice of having nothing? That’s good shit my dudes.

He hears “You said you were doing this for all the people in this country. So...haven’t you already decided?” and solidifies his decision, while the panel focuses very clearly on him clutching the red headband, the object that’s always been strongly associated with both his and Ryu’s trajectories, the thing that he gave Ryu all the way back in the Alpha series as a reminder to stay focused and not give in to the Satsui no Hadou, the monstrous thing that was tearing Ryu apart and costing him every ounce of concentration to stave off, a thing that’s come to represent their friendship as well as Ryu personally. The thing that he now clutches to stay focused in his decision, before everything goes wrong and he pays the price for it no matter what his intentions were.

This is some primo shit and easily the most I’ve ever been ecstatic about a Street Fighter plotline in a very long time. Seems like they set out hardcore to undo Ken’s long-standing role as a secondary character to Ryu and not rely on their traditionally hackier stuff with superpowered dark sides or Shadaloo plots. Thoroughly impressed and I can’t wait to see more.

demon slayer

rengoku (the literal love of my life, the one who started it all, the main reason i got into anime, the cure to my depression at one point?? i get emotional just thinking about him sometimes. i go back and listen to the mugen train soundtrack just to hurt my own feelings)

shinobu (🦋 [can't add my blog tag for her cause it's an emoji but she has some of the prettiest fanart ever], gorgeous character design, color scheme, overall aesthetic, classy. she deserved more out of her life than being in a constant state of anger 😭)

inosuke (i have no tag for him but he is my fav from the main squad. he is chaotic as hell and caveman-ish in the most hilarious ways. his pretty face makes it that much more ironic)

nezuko (the cutest baddie ever. so pretty. protective of tanjiro and comrades. how can you not love her)

zenitsu (his cowardice is actually really relatable. his expressions are sooo funny in the show they've got to be one of the best)

the main trio's dynamic (i enjoy them all as individuals, but when they're together the silly antics and the chaos that ensues is so dear to me. gege was so wrong for what he did to each of them. if i ever see him it's on sight)

nanami (my man, her man, everyone and their mom's man...! literally impossible to not like him. the miserable corporate life is just so relatable. but the fact that he's still such a good man at the end of the day and wants to protect the children ;-; WHERE are the men like him irl 😭 i will never forgive gege for what he did to him,,, gege,.., when i cATcH you gege.,.,..)

ino (my ABSOLUTE FAV underrated man?? his skater boy aesthetic makes me wEAK!! and correct me if i'm wrong but he just gives off major himbo energy. he's such a puppy, i love him so much 🥺 also fun fact i met his VA, who also voices tanaka from haikyuu [i don't think i will ever shut up about this])

gojo (for obvious reasons. handsome, funny, good at everything. at the same time he cares so much for the youngins it's really touching. but also he's just so unserious about everything i wish i had even an ounce of his confidence fr. an uncontested king, he deserved better 😭)

geto (oh geto (be forewarned: only depression posts in this tag). it hurt me so bad to see his descent into madness. i think his story and especially his relationship with gojo is beautifully written. the visual symbolism is also heavenly in the most melancholic way. he reminds me a lot of eren from aot. i felt his exhaustion and hopelessness from the depths of my soul. i think about rengoku when i want to be hurt in a good(ish?) way, but geto is my go-to when i'm in the mood for straight depression)

yuta (a blorbo if I've ever seen one. so precious. very sad about his current state. if gege kills him off there will be no one left 😭)

choso (normally i don't care for emo boys but he's so 'i am onii-chan,' it's endearing and also kind of funny. other than that he's really quiet for the most part but also like responsible and cares a lot about people he's close to. i ship him and yuki. i remember finding out about his death when i'd first logged into tumblr one day and i was devastated. how does gege manage to kill everyone 😭🤡)

my hero academia

shoto (see tag: SHOTOOOOO. my favorite boy. i love how the angst just completely left his body after deku forced him through his inner turmoil during the sports festival. competent. obviously one of bones' favorites given he's always drawn so handsomely)

kaminari (he is so dumb and i love him for it. good vibes only and even if a bit perverted, still super respectful and funny. bones always animates him with the most hilarious expressions. love him and jiro. also love him and mina as last in the class. and him and kirishima for being able to handle bakugo's difficult personality in stride!! he is so stupid and happy and i love him omg)

kirishima (a himbo!! the friendliest and most encouraging jock ever. i would've appreciated if i had a presence like him around when i was in high school. so manly!! i love how he just gets along with everyone. him and tetsutetsu are such an iconic duo. i also love how silly him and kaminari are [and sometimes bakugo too lol])
