The Half-Light reaction of sympathetic fear to Klaasje's accusations, and then Drama cutting in to point out that the fear isn't to do with Ruby, it's the fear of being arrested that Klaasje is feeling. Her first response, out of fear of the RCM and the Moralintern, is to use the presumed biases and homophobia of these RCM officers as leverage to pin the blame on Ruby, even as nearly every other scrap of information you can collect describing Ruby's personality contradicts it.

My poor cat is Distressed and Upset because she saw a raccoon for the first time last night. It was on the other side of the sliding glass door, and not only did it startle her by being there without permission, but it didn't even have the good manners to act afraid when she yelled at it, in her most terrifying yowls and hisses.

It pawed at the seam of the door to see if it could come inside and bother her without glass in the way (that's a hard no), then it ambled off into the darkness again.

Now it's a bright and sunny afternoon, and the cat is pacing in front of the door with suspicion in her every move.

The difference between facing a carnivore vs a member of the terrifyingly, aptly named 'opportunistic eaters'? The fear of being on one's menu, the knowledge that you are on the other's - no matter what you are. The inherent danger of a threat display where there are set rules to avoiding harm turning into a hunt on a dime.

lyonel strong. the lord of harrenhal & the head of house strong during the reign of king viserys i targaryen, he served as both master of laws & hand of the king for viserys. a formidable man, lyonel was a man of great natural gifts, as he was slow of speech & a taciturn man, he was often mistaken for an unintelligent brute, however, having studied at the citadel where he earned six links on his chain before deciding that the maester's life was not for him, he was extremely literate & well learned & as a result of his time at the citadel, lyonel had an exhaustive knowledge of the laws of the seven kingdoms & lyonel was also a renowned warrior with a reputation as a formidable fighter. lyonel brought his four children to court with him; his maiden daughters became handmaidens to princess rhaenyra targaryen, his elder son ser harwin was made a captain in the city watch, & his second son larys joined the king's confessors. eventually, as rhaenyra's sworn shield & constant companion, harwin was rumored to be the father of the princess' three sons, for the boys lacked the valyrian traits of silver-gold hair & purple eyes that rhaenyra & laenor shared. in 120 ac, over mounting rumors of his grandsons' parentage, viserys removed ser harwin as princess rhaenyra's sworn shield with lyonel leaving the court to accompany harwin on his return to harrenhal. shortly after their arrival, a fire broke out in the tower they were sleeping in, & killed both lyonel & harwin, along with three retainers & a dozen servants. the fire was considered an accident, & blamed on the curse of harrenhal. however, some records of the time suggested it was a murder, & listed various suspects: corlys velaryon as revenge for harwin cuckolding his son ser laenor velaryon, prince daemon targaryen who's motive would be eliminating a rival for princess rhaenyra's affections, larys strong to claim the inheritance of harrenhal & even king viserys i to eliminate the man who brought shame & dishonor on his house, although in actuality it was larys who slew them as an unwarranted "favor" to queen alicent hightower. thrice married & thrice widowed lyonel had four children from his marriages: ser harwin, larys, & two maiden daughters & an older bastard daughter, alys rivers, from his callow youth. slain at harrenhal with his son ser harwin strong.

harwin strong. known as breakbones, ser harwin was a knight & the heir to harrenhal who served as a captain in the city watch of king's landing. massive, fierce, formidable & gentle, harwin was the strongest man in the seven kingdoms in his day & the rumored lover of princess rhaenyra targaryen, & is in actuality the real father of her three sons with her first husband ser laenor velaryon: jacaerys, lucerys, & joffrey. in 114 ac, princess rhaenyra granted harwin her favor at the tourney celebrating her wedding with ser laenor velaryon. at that tourney, ser criston cole broke his collarbone & shattered his elbow. mushroom mocked him as "brokenbones" after this event. thereafter harwin was a consistent presence at rhaenyra's side & was the foremost member among the blacks. in late 115 ac, according to septon eustace, during the birth of rhaenyra's second son, lucerys, both rhaenyra's husband ser laenor & harwin breakbones were in attendance at her bedside. when rhaenyra moved to dragonstone after the rivalry with queen alicent hightower & the greens grew to be too much, breakbones went with her as her personal sworn shield. in 120 AC, after prince aemond targaryen called rhaenyra's sons "strongs" & a brawl broke out, harwin was removed as princess rhaenyra's champion by king viserys i targaryen & he returned to harrenhal, being replaced by ser erryk cargyll of the kingsguard. slain at harrenhal with his father lord lyonel strong.

larys strong. known as larys clubfoot or the clubfoot, larys was the lord of harrenhal & head of house strong during the latter part of the reign of viserys i targaryen & the reign of king aegon ii targaryen serving on the small council as the master of whisperers & lord confessor for both kings. one of larys' feet was twisted at birth, so he dragged it with a limp. larys rarely spoke, preferring to listen. when he did so it was either to be glib or share words of great importance. the clubfoot was an enigmatic & cunning man, although he could be convincing & amiable when needed, he kept his own counsel & was largely friendless & historians are still baffled as to exactly what clubfoot's loyalties & goals were during the dance of the dragons, for he did not seem to have been absolutely loyal to aegon ii, so much as he aligned with him against their mutual enemy rhaenyra, who had shamed house strong in her affair with his older brother. when king viserys i died in 129 AC, larys was part of the green faction at court, attending the meeting of the small council which agreed to support aegon ii targaryen against his older half-sister, rhaenyra targaryen. larys cut his palm & had the male conspirators in attendance swear a blood oath. aegon's mother, queen alicent hightower, ordered larys to torture blood after the murder of prince jaehaerys targaryen. larys escaped capture during the fall of king's landing to rhaenyra in 130 ac. he spirited aegon, who was still recovering from the battle at rook's rest, & the king's two remaining children, prince maelor & princess jaehaera, from the red keep through a secret passage which led them out of the capital while bypassing the city's gates, insisting the group part ways & ordered ser rickard thorne of aegon's kingsguard to bring maelor to lord lyonel hightower at oldtown, & ser willis fell of the kingsguard to escort jaehaera to lord borros baratheon at storm's end. larys disguised king aegon as a commoner & sent him to dragonstone under the care of ser marston waters, believing her own stronghold would be the last place rhaenyra would think to search for her half brother while larys remained in king's landing, strategically working in secret to undermine rhaenyra's hold on the capital. a key conspirator of the moon of the three kings to the pretender trystane truefyre & in king aegon ii targaryen's murder. secret greenseer & skinchanger. tried & executed by lord cregan stark during the hour of the wolf. as the last of his line, his death brought an end to house strong.

alys rivers / strongrivers. a bastard of house strong, a serving wench with an intrigue in potions as a wet nurse at harrenhal, a woods witch & a lover of prince aemond targaryen (& rumor has it, ser addam velaryon when he arrived at harrenhal to consult the green men at the isle of faces), alys could see visions of the future in storm clouds, pools of water, & flames & was a powerful witch, commanding dark legions of broken men & outlaws reigning as the sorcerous witch queen of harrenhal.

jacaerys velaryon. the firstborn son of rhaenyra targaryen & her first husband ser laenor velaryon (in actuality, his biological father is harwin strong), jacaerys, also known as jace, was named prince of the dragonstone & heir to the iron throne when rhaenyra was crowned queen during the dance of the dragons. according to septon eustace, while holding court king viserys once told the young jacaerys that the iron throne would one day be his. the king's hopes for peace between his sons & grandsons was futile. queen alicent's three sons aegon, aemond, & daeron targaryen became bitter rivals to rhaenyra's three sons, resenting their nephews for stealing their birthright, the iron throne. the enforced closeness between the six boys (attending feasts, sometimes training together at arms, or studying under the same maesters) only increased this dislike. friend, bloodbrother & companion of lord cregan stark. betrothed to lady baela targaryen, but rumors are whispered that he married lord cregan's half sister sara snow. one of the minds behind gaining the vale & the north on the side of the blacks & the red sowing of the dragonseeds. responsible, bold & politically savvy, jacaerys was protective of his family & was considered a worthy heir of house targaryen & of the iron throne. rider of the dragon vermax. slain at the battle of the gullet, struck by crossbows until he sank into the sea where his body was never found. jacaerys' death as the prince of dragonstone was a major blow to the blacks & queen rhaenyra sought vengeance for her son's death.

lucerys velaryon. the secondborn son of rhaenyra targaryen & her first husband ser laenor velaryon (in actuality, his biological father is harwin strong), lucerys, also known as luke, alongside his brothers had a rivalry with queen alicent hightower's sons aegon, aemond & daeron that resulted in a brawl at driftmark with the results being luke with a broken nose & aemond losing an eye at lucerys' hands in defending his elder brother jacaerys. considered the heir to driftmark, lord of the tides & master of driftmark, but corlys velaryon's brother ser vaemond velaryon protested on the grounds that rhaenyra's velaryon sons were not laenor's, but the bastards of harwin strong. rhaenyra had her second husband prince daemon targaryen seize vaemond & strike off his head, & fed the body to her dragon, syrax. vaemond's five cousins fled to king's landing with vaemond's wife & sons, daemion & daeron velaryon, to seek justice before the king. viserys heard them, but ordered each of the cousins' tongues to be removed with hot pincers when they called rhaenyra's sons bastards. betrothed to rhaena targaryen. rider of the dragon arrax. slain at storm's end by vhagar & prince aemond targaryen, her rider. his death resulted in the dance of the dragons no longer a matter of diplomacy, but began a war of fire and blood, with rhaenyra collapsing upon the discovery & daemon swore vengeance for her: an eye for an eye, a son for a son. daemon alongside mysaria the white wyrm sent men known as blood & cheese to assassinate prince jaehaerys, son of king aegon ii & queen helaena as retribution for lucerys' death. in the end, the blood of their children transformed a dynastic dispute into a war of annihilation, the grief & rage of losing a child could burn down the world, either aegon or rhaenyra could live at the end, but not both.

joffrey velaryon. the thirdborn son of rhaenyra targaryen & her first husband ser laenor velaryon (in actuality, his biological father is harwin strong), joffrey, nicknamed joff, like his older brothers, had a rivalry with queen alicent hightower's children aegon, aemond & daeron. joffrey was only eleven years old at the beginning of the dance of the dragons & after learning that lucerys had died in the dance over shipbreaker bay at storm's end, joffrey swore a terrible oath of vengeance against prince aemond & lord borros baratheon, & only his grandparents, lord corlys velaryon & princess rhaenys targaryen, kept him from mounting his own dragon at once. betrothed to the youngest daughter of lord desmond manderly in exchange for white harbor's support of the blacks. sent to gulltown & the eyrie with rhaena targaryen to accompany him. becomes the prince of dragonstone & heir to the iron throne after jacaerys' death at the battle of the gullet whereas after the fall of king's landing rhaenyra sent a fleet to deliver him from gulltown to king's landing where rhaenyra planned a lavish celebration for him. joffrey was eager to prove himself as a warrior & defeat the armies of the greens, but swore solemnly to help his mother hold the red keep in the event of an attack when told to remain in the city with his dragon. during the storming of the dragonpit, he donned squire's armor & begged rhaenyra to let him ride to the dragonpit & mount his dragon but rhaenyra forbade him to leave the castle out of grief for his brothers' deaths, but joffrey went missing & mounted rhaenyra's dragon syrax, never having rode her before which caused her to shake off her unfamiliar rider & rhaenyra sent the seven who rode to bring him back & he fell hundreds of feet below into a house in fleabottom, his last words "mother forgive me". rider of tyraxes. killed during the riots of king's landing & storming of the dragonpit. his half brother prince aegon the younger, later known as aegon iii, became rhaenyra's heir after his death.

(( As a kinda silly OOC thing: I like conceiving of Miranda (and her connections through the Merkingdom) as being an anti-OP muse.

As in, I like the thought of, the more OP someone or something else is, the worse of a time they have being able to do anything to Miranda. She is, very intentionally and within the logic of her own universe, designed to be able to handle those with extreme power and authority and to be able to undermine everything they can throw at her and counteract anything that they try to do.

She's already a royal, next in line to her throne! She has to be able to fully handle other people in similar positions without risking any damage to her own, and this is something that she's dealt with her entire life. She very much knows all the risks associated as a part of her job, her title, her entire reason for being born, and she's well-trained in the formal and informal methods of striking down anyone else who might even come close to a position to her own.

Which, of course, means that muses that very much aren't OP, that are just normal people or much closer to it, are much, much more capable of threatening Miranda and the Merkingdom both as a point of intention. This is something that I very much want and very much want to encourage. Especially because the reason this is such a problem is the way that the Merkingdom and, thus, Miranda, entirely overlook and ignore such threats and treat them like non-issues. The fact that most Merkingdom royals, upon actually encountering a landfolk, have a range of responses from discomfort to dismissal to ignorance, is one that is very purposeful here. The ones that they're most likely to pay attention to are the ones in the most danger, and the ones that they aren't likely to care very much about beyond petty malice and as another means to inflate their own egos. And, as it is, the ones they're most likely to pay attention to are those that have decided to pose a risk.

And it's a thing that I've been dealing with from the beginning too. From the start of this blog I was very bothered by the idea that some OP character would decide to singlehandedly "fix" or destroy the Merkingdom from a position of equal or greater authority. Which is not to say that I didn't want it to be changed or that there weren't ways to dismantle it. But rather, I wanted it to be more organic, and I wanted to deal with the actual question of how that even happens, and I wanted to ask the question of what could measurably improve this situation and Miranda's life both.

Which meant that, yeah, the more OP a muse is the more intentionally destined for failure they are, and the closer they approach "some guy", the more they'll be able to achieve. Which is not to say it won't be difficult or hard to do, or that there's not the possibility for failure (again, even at her most basic, Miranda is a macropredator that can easily maim someone, but more typical "normal" muses are more likely to possess caution and try to read her body language before pressing her), but the fact remains, very intentionally, that they are the only ones who will be able to do it.
