my family finally got a new printer/scanner after almost 20 years. did have to turn down the saturation in post though.
cw: mention of miscarriage
PROJECT DIVA: POWERFUL SOUND
Gumi Tenori / Diva Fortissimo
A bold and ambitious young woman, she inherited the title of Diva Fortissimo from her mother after the latter retired. She uses a Tenori-On to transform, which she also uses as a weapon, being able to summon green tourmaline crystals to either attack or defend herself with. Her symbol is a red oval.
Gackpo Kamui / Diva Ongaku
An eccentric individual who calls himself "The Dancing Samurai", he is often overprotective of Gumi, who he treats as his own daughter or sibling. He loves stage plays and treats every conversation like one. Strangely, he seems to have a past relationship with Kaito. He has a "heshin engine" implanted in his body that enables him to transform. He attacks with his Music Katana, Miburi, and his symbol is a purple fan-like shape.
Neru Akita / Diva Irato
A sharp and blunt teenager, she works a part time job so she can support her brother and their parents. She often tends to make conversation with random strangers and frequently switches hobbies trying to find something that can bring something interesting into dull life. One day she mistakenly receives a package in the mail, a seemingly normal cell phone that later lets her transform. She wields a hammer that is styled after a guitar, and her symbol is a black and yellow triangle.
Haku Yowane / Diva Triste
A depressed and introverted college student. She was involved in a plane crash as a child, with her body being replaced with cyborg parts from the chest and shoulders down, which she is insecure about. when she goes in to get her artificial skin replaced, she is accidentally implanted with a "henshin engine". One day, while working at her shift at a chocolate store, none other than Neru shows up and starts making small talk with her, only for her heshin engine to "sync" with Neru's cell phone, enabling them the ability to transform. She wields a microphone with a long cord that she can use as a whip, and her symbol is a purple diamond.
Lily Masuda / Diva Yuri
A spoiled and charismatic rich girl, she is the heir to the largest robotics manufacturer in Japan. Though she claims she capable of handling herself, her father gifts her a bodyguard and "sister" in the form of Miki, who she grows attached to. The last thing she buys before her parents cut her off is a heart-shaped key from a mysterious seller, which later lets her transform so she and Miki can protect each other. She wields a golden bow, and her symbol is a black heart.
SF-A2 Miki / Diva Tempo
A polite and precise android. She was created after Lily's mother was expecting her sister, but tragically lost the baby. Her programming allows her to stay calm in any situation and carry out her attacks all with a smile on her face. Her Diva form is actually a "combat mode". She mainly uses blades built into her arms, and her symbol is a red and blue star.
Up next: Yukari, Lapis, Rana, Cul, Una, Zunko, and Akari!

so it's probably waaaaaaay too early to make a Gavv OC, however: I was thinking of what the secondary could potentially be like and this idea stuck in my head and even though I'm sure the secondary will probably be nothing like this I felt the need to sketch my idea out
anyway: Kamen Rider Juze! (more details under read more)
so this isn't going to be based on lore since we know. basically jack shit but the way I figure it whenever there's aliens there's also the government sniffing around trying to figure out what the hell is going on
after a period of monster fights going down across Japan the government decides "we're going to handle this ourselves" and manages to replicate Gavv's "belt"/organ and Gochizos artificially. the only problem is the only way for a human to use them is to effectively turn them into a cyborg which. can be something of a hard sell as you can probably imagine
the solution they come up with? get an influencer to undergo the treatment and steam their fights against the forces of evil in the hopes of getting enough people to sign up that they can handle the monster thing themselves
enter: Musha Ara, real name unknown, who the government realizes a bit too late is maybe the worst person they could have asked to go through with this. not because she's not successful or anything; she's not only incredibly popular, but picks up the Juze system incredibly well...she'd be great if not for the massive swaths of collateral damage she leaves behind
Ara's primary motivation in all this, above all else, is the thrill of a good fight. she's not necessarily opposed to saving people or anything, but she really doesn't think to prioritize people over the monster, or minimizing the danger the monster poses, or even her own safety, for that matter. and GOD help you if you try to boss her around, because she is every bit the rebellious rock star Juze is modeled after
as you can see the cybernetic additions to Ara show that, much like Shouma, her biology is far from normal...well, now, anyway. she might not have her belt literally growing out of her stomach but she DOES have a big ass electric outlet in her stomach for the belt to connect to, among other things
the Henshin Belt Juze uses artifical Gochizos, all of which are distinct from regular Gochizos in how they don't have eyes and are themed around beverages. the one Juze uses for her default transformation is Frank Energy
among Musha Ara's cybernetic modifications is a reservoir of liquid nanobots inside her body; whenever she transforms into Juze, this liquid explodes out of her, grabs all the nearby metal, and promptly shapes it into the proper Juze armor before magnetizing it to Ara. this is why it's so jagged and asymmetrical compared to the more smooth and natural-looking Gavv
these liquid nanobots are also the source of Juze's combat prowess, able to cannibalize her surroundings for quick battlefield repairs, makeshift weapons, and also just serving as a quick and easy substitute for acid. this is also the source of most of Juze's aforementioned collateral damage issues
Juze also has a guitar axe-gun weapon, but I do not have the energy to draw that right now, so
just for fun, here's what Juze's transformation sounds like: DRINK. Gokungokun! Gokungokun! Gokungokun! Gokungokun! Gokungokun! Gokungokun! Gokungokun! GoKA-BOOM! Frank Energy! BIRI!

The Cymond Cluster
This is a list of the many universal streams within the Cymond universal cluster (its name a reference to the Diaclone franchise that preceded Transformers, whose name comes from a merger of the words "diamond" and "cyclone"), one of the many clusters of different universes that make up the Transformers multiverse as documented by the TransTechs. The Cymond cluster mainly consists of worlds from other franchises that either precede the franchise itself, or some miscellaneous TakaraTomy franchises that are somewhat related to the franchise.
Cymond MMYY.DD - Example
Canon streams
Cymond 772.00 Beta - the Henshin Cyborg, Diakron, and Kronoform toylines
Cymond 381.00 Beta - the New Microman toyline (includes Micro Change subline)
Cymond 1184.00 Gamma - the Zoids: Starriors comic miniseries
Cymond 290.03 Alpha - the Brave Exkaiser anime
Cymond 999.04 Alpha - the Zoids: Chaotic Century anime (includes New Century sequel anime)

Last up from Patrick Chan's collection of photos and concept art for the upcoming Takara Tomy Microman 50th Anniversary "Project M" release planned for Fall is the "Sword" trike. The Sword resembles a similar vehicle in Death Stranding that gamers may recognize by the same creator, Yoji Shinakawa of Kojima Productions, who is the lead designer for Project M, but it also seems to pay homage to the original Microman Zone vehicle Beam Tripler as well as Henshin Cyborg's Cyborg Rider, and has an upright mechsuit mode hinted at in the concepts but not demonstrated yet in the prototype model.
This last following image may be related to the mech suit mode, or could be something to do with Spy Magician or some other as yet unidentified figure.
The first teaser for the project appears near the end of this video:

THOUSANDS of years ago, before the dawn of man, Kamen Riders were pitted against each other for the amusement of the cyborg elves from the distant future year of...the future. These CAVEMEN Riders were primitive and henshined using drivers made from bone and their own excrement. What they didn’t know was that they were all actors in a reality show that was so much better than the simplistic drama and meat based shows you have today. Because it had crazy shit, that you couldn’t even imagine... But one day you will. Because it will happen... In the future.

Okay, uh. Robot Detective. What can I really say about that? ... I liked it!
It’s one of those things where it interested me but more for what it is than what’s in there. It’s another of Ishinomori’s works, and in particular one of the first things he made after Kamen Rider started the Henshin Boom -- and even among those Robot Detective is quite unique, as the titular hero doesn’t really transform! He throws off his coat and hat and starts brawling and that’s about as much as you get. Even his very late-series upgrade just has him change colour and reveal some weaponry (and only sometimes). The series is also very much superhero antics shoved into a cop drama rather than the latter theming the former; though you could argue similar things for Kamen Rider feeling like a spy show at times.
So! When you actually go back and watch it, do you find much interesting? ... well, honestly, yeah; a little bit! You do have all those elements I just mentioned which makes it a pretty unique curiosity amongst the usual superhero Tokusatsu, but the big draw of the show I’d say is Kei himself and the opposition he faces from the older experienced grumpy cop on the team, Shiba; it’s that usual older-guy-doesn’t-like-the-new-ways plot but focused on an intense distrust of robots. It’s nothing super deep, given this is a kid’s superhero show from the early 70s right at the start of the henshin boom; but that combined with Kei’s gentle nature and the younger cop - Shinjo - being more open to him and genuinely considering him a friend makes it an entertaining dynamic and very endearing.
Aside from that, it’s difficult to get into much else -- there’s not much in the way of themes, and episodes mostly play out as usual cop drama stuff that they’d clearly nailed at this point; but with BAD mixed in as an excuse to have super robots for a hero to fight. A few of these touch on usual tropes of the genre - the gold-digging wife, the jewel hunter - but I was pleasantly surprised by how many villains were richer people or straight up corporate heads! The show hardly has a scathing criticism or anything, but if we have to have a superhero cop show I certainly prefer seeing the rich portrayed as villains much more than the poor, y’know? It’s a fun enough show, but... if you’re interested in watching it there’s some heavy content warnings for some of the last few episodes -- 21, 23, 24 and 25 feature blackface to portray cyborgs. It’s bad! It’s really bad! Gavan is the only other Toku show I’ve come across with it and that one wasn’t so blatant about it. This also ultimately a cop show, and I would hardly say it’s as bad as Drive or Dekaranger or anything; but it’s obviously not gonna be to everyone’s tastes.
It’s a show I enjoyed well enough despite its flaws, but mostly for the charm of the main character and the curiosity of how unique it is among Tokusatsu superhero shows. It’s 26 episodes long, so with the content warnings above in mind it’s not something that’s too hard to recommend; but I’m also not going to rush anyone out to see it. It’s just pretty decent

"STOP!"
He looked away from his work. He saw a man standing in the dim light of a street lamp. He allowed his grip to slacken, leaving the limp body of his victim to slip further to the ground.
"Who the hell are you?" he replied in his raspy, hissing tone.
"Someone who won't allow you to continue to harm innocent people," the man responded. "Your reign of terror ends tonight!"
He narrowed his eyes at the man. He was a seemingly ordinary adult man in his late twenties to early thirties. He wore an old biker's jacket and had medium length hair. He seemed familiar.
His eyes widened when he finally recognized him. "Ah," he said in realization. "So, it's you. I was wondering when I would run into you."
He threw the man in his claws to the side. His enhanced strength propelled him into the wall of a nearby building with enough force to likely finish what he'd started. He saw the man across from him flinch; turning away in anger and disgust.
He gave a hissing chuckle at that.
The man turned back to him, anger burning in his gaze. "You find that funny, monster?!" He shouted.
He stepped forward, his long skeletal tail scraping across the street. "Tell me something," he said, not acknowledging the outburst. "How long have you been alive now? Two, three hundred years? How, in all that time, do you still find the energy to care about these pathetic little creatures?"
The man didn't immediately respond.
"We are basically immortal," he continued, drawing closer. "Everyone we know will turn to dust long before we're going to break down. You have more in common with me than anyone currently living. Knowing all of that, why do you still cling on to these pathetic humans like you still are one?!"
He stopped a few steps away from the man. Their eyes bored into each other. The man looked up at him, unperturbed by his height or by the bone frills slowly spreading from the sides of his head.
The man sighed. "Maybe you're right," he replied. "I admit, I haven't felt like a human being for a very long time now. I've had to watch so many of my friends die over the years. Taki. Tachibana. Ruriko. Even many of my fellows have died over the centuries."
He saw the man's gaze falter. With inhuman speed, he pulled back his hand. He extended the three-inch steel claws in his fingers and thrust them forward to tear off the man's face.
"However..."
The man blocked the thrust with equally inhuman speed. He held the attacker's skeletal claw with a single hand and retaliated with his right, landing heavy punches in his opponent's black rubber coated solar plexus.
"...my long life has taught me something important. It has taught me the immeasurable value of human life. I have seen how much these people value their limited lives and treasure every day."
He threw his enemy away from him with a powerful shoulder throw. The inhuman killer managed to land on all four limbs. He reared up, bearing his seven inch metal fangs from the snake-skull that made up his face.
"For anyone to take those lives away, I cannot..."
The man pulled off the biker jacket, revealing the belt beneath.
"...I will not forgive you!"
His right arm thrust across his chest, held straight at an angle.
"Rider..."
The arm arced over his head to the right as the turbine in his belt began to spin, drawing in the wind.
"...HENSHIN!"
His left arm thrust across his chest. A bright light shined from the belt. In an instant, the man... Takeshi Hongo was gone. In his place stood the cyborg hero with the mask designed after a grasshopper. His red scarf flowed in the wind.
The Kaijin snarled as he returned to his feet. "Damn you, Kamen Rider!"
"Come, Shinigami Cobra!"
The two cyborgs ran at each other. Once again, for the sake of human peace, Kamen Rider battles the forces of evil. SHOCKER. DESTRON. Crisis Empire. It didn't matter. As long as his life continued, he would preserve the limited lives around him.
You have lived for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Everyone you’ve ever loved has died. You’ve grown to accept this, but you simply cannot accept when someone is killed…

I'm thinking the way 70's henshin heroes never question all the murdering they do must come from the fact that, between Gekko Kamen & Rider, giant heroes like Ultraman ruled the airwaves, & they always fought kaiju & aliens who they blew up without question or hesitation because "they're not human therefore they're evil so blow 'em up", which is still very not-good. So I think the modern concept of kaijin was introduced to sort of have the same appeal as kaiju for a human-sized hero, hell I'm pretty sure the reason kaijin always make weird noises is because ask any kid & they'll tell you a memorable part of any kaiju is their unique roar, so kaijin probably make those weird noises to replicate that appeal too! As well of course as the appeal of "who cares if they were once human, they're not human NOW so you're not supposed to question or feel bad about them."
Rider represents a pretty significant shift in direction for henshin heroes, from making the hero more of the center focus and being more action heavy to repealing pretty much all of Gekko Kamen’s rules that had previously held sway over the genre so that it became more obviously Sunday Morning Hero Show to Sell Toys and less This is A Morality Tale
With Rider, you could sort of argue that the kaijin make animalistic noises because it’s part of the cyborg programming meant to make them more intimidating but where this concept really falls apart is Henshin Ninja Arashi where like the title suggests, it’s about people who can change into animals, which really begs the question of: If these are people willingly turning themselves into animals, why when they change into animals do they switch to making the animal noises instead of speaking as they normally would?
And then the whole “this is actually a person the hero is killing” thing becomes even harder to ignore when you consider the grunts in that show, who aren’t even animal ninjas just plain old regular ninjas and therefore have even less reason to be doing the Shocker grunt noises making it clear that the noises are there so your brain doesn’t think of these as people
Really the most significant change Rider brought to the genre was making murder justified through various means when it was previously considered morally wrong for heroes to kill and henshin heroes tried very much to avoid killing and even shows that were only henshin hero adjacent like Jaguar’s Eye followed the no killing rule pretty religiously
And yes Gekko Kamen’s rule was very annoying when you want to churn out episodes fast and making them have as much mass appeal as possible because with the rule in place the hero had to show restraint and compassion and let a fleeing enemy live and really how was that more exciting than seeing a karate bug kick a monster to death huh? When they made Rider to bring back human sized heroes, I think they either didn’t understand why the no killing rule was there so they decided it was a product of older more outdated values or they did understand why it existed and decided to ignore it in order to have their flashy heroes kicks monster to death scenes

VJ Self-Insert Revamp
I've had this cooking for a while but have only shared it on Discord, so I figured it was high time to post here:
As much as I love the idea of being a henshin hero (and would still like to do something with Violet one day maybe), I've made a new self-insert that I think is a lot more fitting for my ship: Robecca. Okay, she usually goes by Rebecca, but come on, Robecca is such a fitting name for a cyborg! And it's what I'll be tagging her with and often referring to her as for clarity.
Rebecca is just a background character in Movieland, but that doesn't stop her from having her own life, her own personality, her own dreams and ambitions... the latter of which were cruelly stomped on when she started having chronic pain issues. Despite living in a futuristic city with all kinds of wondrous technology, she couldn't find a cure. She tried for years, and all of her doctors ended up disappointing her. A chance encounter with three robotic nurses led her on the path to being a willing test subject for experimental cybernetics, which she saw as being able to fix her "broken" body.
Unbeknownst to her, this testing was an experiment by Dr. Cranken, head researcher of the late villainous organization Gedow. He wanted to study the power of the "heart" to harness it for his own ends, and for that, he needed a willing subject to mold into his perfect weapon. Sweet, shy Rebecca seemed like a bit of an odd choice, but something about her drew Cranken in. There had to be something to her just waiting to be uncovered.
Yeah, long story short, he fell head over heels for his subject and started doubting what he was doing. There was definitely some friction between them when his original plan came to light, but they ultimately ended up together after a lot of apologies and soul-searching.
For her design, I went back to City of Heroes because its character creator is freaking fantastic, but I haven't quiiiiite been able to nail what I want. There are two robotic bodies that I like: Clockwork (left) and Cyborg (right).
Clockwork is just a bit too skeletal, but I really like its silhouette and general structure. And while I like a lot of aspects of Cyborg (especially the way the shoulders connect to the body), it's just too bulky and... clunky, I guess? So somewhere in between these two with elements of this art by Sungryun Park. And optional Cybertech Spine:
Later in her lore, she gets synthetic skin and nerves, but I wouldn't know how to design that without it just looking like a person. Maybe one day, I'll actually com an artist to help me flesh (heh) out her design, but I'm nervous about doing that because I worry I won't be able to describe what I want.
Anyway, that's Robecca. There's more I could say about her, but I've rambled enough for now.
