@Regrann from @supreme_reign - My ancestor Henry "Box" Brown was born into slavery in 1816 in Louisa County, Virginia. At the age of 15 he was sent to work in a tobacco factory in Richmond, Va. He is famous for his escape to freedom March 23, 1849 at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. To get out of work the day he was to escape, he burned his hand to the bone with oil of vitriol (sulfuric acid). The box that Brown was shipped in was 3 feet long by 2 feet 8 inches deep by 2 feet wide and displayed the words "dry goods" on it. It was lined with baize, a coarse woollen cloth, and he carried only a small portion of water and a few biscuits. There was a single hole cut for air and it was nailed and tied with straps. The box was transported by wagon, railroad, steamboat, wagon again, railroad, ferry, railroad, and finally delivery wagon, being completed on March 30, 1849. #history #henryboxbrown #louisa #richmond #rva #philly #abolitionist #box #knowledge #slavery #mailcall #freedom #Regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/Bte54cUn97P/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1t2wjc983n9cg

6th-day #BlackHistoryMonth2020 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 "𝐁𝐨𝐱" 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 ⁣ ⁣ was a 19th-century Virginia slave who escaped to freedom at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.⁣ ⁣ #HenryBoxBrown was born into slavery in 1816 on a #plantation called Hermitage in Louisa County, Virginia. Henry may have remembered his parents fondly, stating that his mother was the one to instill Christian values into him. ⁣ ⁣ He is believed to have had at least two siblings, mentioning a brother and a sister in his autobiography. At the age of 15, he was sent to work in a tobacco factory in Richmond. ⁣ ⁣ For a short time, Brown became a noted #abolitionist speaker in the northeast United States. As a public figure and fugitive slave, Brown felt extremely endangered by the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, which increased pressure to capture escaped slaves. ⁣ ⁣ He moved to England and lived there for 25 years, touring with an anti-slavery #panorama, becoming a #magician and #showman. He toured and performed as a magician, speaker, and mesmerist until at least 1889. The last decade of his life (1886–97) was spent in Toronto, where he died in 1897.⁣ ⁣ Make sure to check out @audible for “Henry’s Freedom Box” and Your Story Hour Office on @YouTube “The Escape of Henry Box Brown”⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #EverythangCulture #ConnectingCulturesOneEpisodeAtATime #AmericanHistory #ThatsWild #HenryHoppedOutThatBoxLike #SurpriseMuthafucka (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8QADg-ArNY/?utm_medium=tumblr

・・・ From Dancewebzine, one of the biggest dance magazines in Korea, July 2020: “It would've been nice if “Box” (choreographed and performed by Bernard Brown) based on Henry Box Brown, a black man who risked his life and sought freedom in the 19th century America, was presented at a live stage but was a film.” The reviewer (and the presenter) expressed it was a pity they did not see the work live, on stage. We are grateful to have intercultural communication and international opportunities! #bbmoves #Seoul #Korea #SIDFIT #SeoulInternationalDanceFestivalinTANK #dance #Box #HenryBoxBrown #SocialJustice #Artivism #InterculturalCommunication #fbf 📸: @cherylmannphoto, Los Angeles Dance Festival, 2017 (at Seoul, South Korea - 서울) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF3nZB4sKp9/?igshid=1rkdokoiaihq0

Reposted from @iamwhitneystovall - Day 27: Great Escapes. I couldn’t skip day 27 because these stories have to be shared again and again. I remember learning about slavery as a child and thinking to myself, “I’d have to find that Harriet chick and get the hell outta there or I’d kill myself.” It’s astonishing the risks our ancestors took and the lengths they traveled just for the idea of freedom. Then once they were free, they did what was in their power to free other slaves. Their resiliency and will to survive was unmatched. We can really do anything. #blackexcellence #melanin #ourstory #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackculturematters #community #blackcommunity #blackculture #undergroundrailroad #henryboxbrown #harriettubman #robertsmalls #antislavery #greatescapes #abolitionist #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryfacts mimimargiemargot - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/Buc1A5BHCnw_cJAtggHGFahMJdJ1z0x3SHekkQ0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i3m7hkxlfqt4

@Regrann from @blackculture - Henry "Box" Brown who mailed himself to freedom. #HenryBoxBrown (c.1816–after 1889) was a Louisa Co. born slave who escaped to freedom at age 33 in 1849 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate from Richmond, Virginia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where abolitionists were waiting to receive "the package." 🔐 Handle With Care.♥ #Regrann

Missing moments. . . . Caught. This is a moment in the solo, “Box,” where we see the dancer drawing a home around himself, a protection and a projection, leaving the physical confinement of his enslavement. The time we are in now, sheltering-at-home or sheltering-in-place, is different than Henry ‘Box’ Brown’s experience. I do not believe my liberties are being trampled on. Speaking for myself, I understand the great risks that some are enduring for me to have this privilege. Also, staying in place, now, can save lives. Though I miss many face to face events, like teaching dance and performances, now is a time for reimagining. What can the future be? . . . #bbmoves #dance #futures #HenryBoxBrown #MondayMemories . . 📸: @its.ev.love. 🗺: Upstairs at @bstreettheatre March 2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B_OcsMfFPVr/?igshid=1p01mla9ln1iv

Understand this: In 1776 slavery was alive and well. We have been trying to survive by any means necessary since we arrived on this rock.
