Here's another of my illustration styles. This is from the book I illustrated for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2016, "Mercy, the Incredible True Story of Henry Bergh, Founder of the ASPCA and Friend to Animals," by Nancy Furstinger. #houghtonmifflinharcourt #henrybergh #childrensbookillustration #kidlitart #kidlitartist #aspcahistory #historyforkids

The “turnspit dog,” was bred for one purpose: to run for hours on a tiny wheel that turned the meat spit. Starting in 16th century England, “cooking dogs,” were considered kitchen appliances, and used and abused as such. They worked in pairs, trading shifts when one tired and training included throwing hot coals at their feet. Off duty life wasn’t much better -- turnspits served as mobile foot warmers. With the advent of steam power they became “useless,” and fell into extinction around the mid 1800’s. While cruel, it’s not all bad: Queen Victoria was said to keep retired dogs as pets, and Henry Bergh created The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) largely due to what he saw while visiting Europe. 🐕 . . . #turnspitdog #cruel #aspca #americansocietyforthepreventionofcrueltytoanimals #henrybergh #queenvictoria #medieval #dog #dogfacts (at England) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo1OcxcHSyR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rbsuc78srvdj
