Got to visit the Greenfield Village Holiday Festival at the Henry Ford Museum tonight, which was end to end lovely, but a definite highlight was getting a tour in a real Model T!
[ID: two photos, the first showing the loading area where a Ford Model T car is pulling up to give me a ride in style. Second image is taken from inside the Model T in the front seat, which is where I sat and grinned like a dork the whole time we were driven around. The front hood and headlamps of the car are visible beneath the windscreen.]

greenfield village is something that's just been a part of my life the whole time but I genuinely think it's really cool despite it being made by henry ford. they have so much good stuff that ford went around snapping up and having dismantled and rebuilt at his museum complex. there is a real charm to it having random buildings that ford thought were cool sourced from different places and time periods rather than sticking to a recreation of a single location. like some of the things at greenfield village are
working farm built in 1828
the wright brothers' cycle shop from 1875
noah webster's home from 1823
a cotswold cottage from 1619
a saltbox farmhouse from 1754
working model ts you can get driven around in
a glass shop built in 1930 with live demonstrations
a printing office from 1933
a weaving shop with a jacquard loom in a mill from 1840
rides on an 1873 steam engine
edison's menlo park lab from 1929
and there's people dressed in period clothing, some of whom are in character and some of whom are just explaining what would have gone on in the building in the past. the farm has horses and sheep and chickens and they have people showing you how to card and spin wool. in some of the houses they cook period appropriate meals on the historical stoves. so the vibe in that 1754 farmhouse is totally different from in noah webster's house but you can just walk between them and check them both out
everyone come to southeast michigan and we can all go together!

fellow detroit wash truther who actually knows detroit a hell of a lot better than me, talk to me about detroit wash facts :) :) :)
HELLO I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS!!!!!
• Wash grew up either in Midtown or East Detroit, and by East Detroit I mean like. On the border of Grosse Pointe.
• This doesn’t mean Wash is scared of West Detroit, not by a long shot.
• Big Red Wings fan. Will defend hockey as the best sport until the day he dies
• His family would go to the Holiday Nights every year in Greenfield Village.
• Wash is a big fan of all the museums in the greater Detroit area. He’s always at the Henry Ford Museum when they have a new exhibit. DIA? He could spend hours there even if he did the same exact thing last week. He’s been on the River Rouge Ford Factory tour a million times. And he’ll go again.
• I’m not sure what career path he would’ve took had he just lived his life out on Earth, but I feel like he would have wanted to go to UofM. His younger sister goes instead, and Wash helps fund it.
• Would actually kill someone to have Detroit style pizza just one last time. Specifically Buddy’s Pizza.
• HopCat in Midtown is his favorite bar— he’s a sucker for their fries.
• His favorite place in the city is Belle Isle. He loves to ride his bike there.
• Claims that there’s no better Mexican bakery than La Glorias.
• Used to go to Canada to drink when he was 19.
That’s all I got at this very moment but man I am really thinking so much about Detroiter Wash all the time

"I have always striven to fix beauty in wood, stone, glass or pottery, in oil or watercolor by using whatever seemed fittest for the expression of beauty, that has been my creed." - Louis Comfort Tiffany
One of my favorite signs of spring here in Metro Detroit is the reopening of Greenfield Village in Dearborn. It's an outdoor museum previously curated by Henry Ford.
We love the Liberty Craftworks section, which is populated by a sawmill, pottery shop, weaving, carding, glassblowing, print making, along with other crafts.
It's a mixture of historical craftwork meets modern art production.
Somehow in all of my years walking every inch of this place, I've missed this sign. I stopped and really took the time to read it today.
Beauty is all around us, and we all create beauty. We may all have a different medium, but together we weave this beautiful tapestry that is the human experience.
See the beauty. Create the beauty. Celebrate the beauty.
Keep going beautiful humans, together we make the world better.

In no particular order, and featuring no particular subject:
If I could only pick one, I would pick walking into Udvar-Hazy with an SR-71 in front and a space shuttle directly behind it. That feeling of sheer awe has never been surpassed. Even if you're not into planes or mechanical things.
The Japanese building in LACMA has never disappointed. The tar pits next door however have.
Henry Ford, Greenfield Village, and the Rouge River museum are excellent and might even require two days. If by some miracle, I'm still in Detroit and you come on by, open offer to ping me and we'll go. I haven't visited in years.
The model train museum in Balboa Park in San Diego has a "last-hour" (last half-hour?) special price and that was just enough time.
Also in San Diego is the best carrier until the Hornet starts doing flashlight tours again, the Midway. And just up the street is a decent collection of ships including
The Velvet Museum back in LA was a surprising gem.
Up in SF, the Asian Art Museum is surprisingly good.
Also in SF, that clump of museums in Golden Gate Park is legitimately excellent, but if you can only pick one, the Tea Garden is legitimately excellent.
And sort of also in SF, I have only ever gotten there by driving in from Portland, but Muir Woods is probably the best single grove that exists.
And last, over in Chicago, I fully recommend the Museum of Science and Industry including the coal mine tour.
so curious what everyones favorite museums are
