For my photo book, I am thinking of doing nature photography in an original, non-generic way. Instead of just taking an ordinary photo of a flower, I want to approach it in a more experimental way, possibly doing long exposure, very shallow depth of field, exaggerating the bokeh effect, or getting in so close that I get very detailed shots but it’s not obvious exactly what I photographed. I want to depict the beauty of the natural world and show that nature is a complex thing tat has a mind of its own. I am also thinking of possibly juxtaposing photos of nature with photos that depict the mundane, repetitive lives that a lot of people face. I might capture shots of hands holding a coffee cup at a cafe or a bus slowly leaving the bus stop. This possible juxtaposition would highlight the idea that many people are so busy with their routines, settling for a mundane life, that they don’t see the magic in life. This could also communicate the theme of the extraordinary within the ordinary. For my photos, I will most likely be taking landscape shots rather than portraits.
2. For the nature photography idea, I was influenced by the photographers Henrik Spranz, Tamás Koncz-Bisztricz, and Barry Webb. Their photos all feature things in nature (flowers, a bug, and plants growing out of tree bark), but they are taken in a unique way that makes the subjects appear extraordinary. Spranz’s flower photo uses a very shallow depth of field- the flower is in a slightly blurry focus but the rest of the background is very blurry and uses the bokeh effect, making the photo seem dreamlike and magical. Koncz-Bisztricz’s insect photo features an insect walking in what appears to be a puddle of rain. It’s reflection can be seen in the water, and the photo also uses a shallow depth of field. In addition, the raindrops make the photo appear surreal and magical. Finally, Webb’s photo of tree bark also uses a shallow depth of field where the background is completely blurry, and the only thing in focus is the tree branch and the plants growing out of it. Also, the photo seems mysterious because it is hard to tell exactly hat the subject is at first. These are the kinds of nature photos I would like to take, allowing the viewer to see the magical beauty of nature and see the world in a new lens.
3. I am thinking of having 20 photographs, and in my photo book, I would group them together based on form or content. If I just take nature photos, I will organize the photos in groups of two, contrasting warm and cool color palettes or complementary colors. If I go with the theme of the extraordinary within the ordinary, I will group the photos by putting one photo of ordinary life alongside a magical nature photo to show the contrast between the two worlds.

"Three greater pasque flowers (Pulsatilla grandis) right after sunrise in early spring near Vienna – with Sahara dust in the air. It's a rare occasion and always gives an unreal light condition."
