The Night Henrietta Bowers Disappeared

The analog clock besides their bed flashed one am repeatedly as Henrietta Bowers tossed and turned with restless wide eyes.

She sighed and squirmed away from the loudly snoring figure, peeling back their soft floral duvet to get up.

Their old rickety floor boards creeked underneath her weight like it was gonna crack in half, and the cold floor nearly made her shriek and slink back to bed the moment her big toe touched the ground.

She clapped a hand over her mouth and worriedly glanced over to her husband, certain that creeky board and shriek had just given away her grand plan.

He didn't react at all though, when Butch Bowers slept he was usually impossible to wake, for better or for worse.

There were many times through out their marriage Henrietta had needed something, the keys to the truck, money for the store, formula for Henry, but Butch would always be out like a light by the time he got home.

That was typical for their marriage like theirs though, white trash, toxic, shotgun style.

It definetly warranted a divorce, but things like that just weren't done in places like Derry, more people killed their spouses than left them over here.

Butch wouldn't allow a divorce anyways, his temper always had a way of ruining any of Henrietta's attempts at happiness, and it often made her wonder if their marriage had ever even been good to begin with, or she had just diluted herself into thinking Butch wasn't always such a monster.

She still loved him though, she really shouldn't have, and she knew that very well, but she loved him so very much and just couldn't quit him.

She loved Butch despite the alcoholism, beer belly, laziness, and extreme violence, he was awful, but he was still her husband.

He was the father of her child, he provideded for her, beatings and scoldings be damned.

In many respects, Butch was her own alcohol, maybe just as Butch knew alcohol made him an asshole but he kept on drinking it, Henrietta knew Butch was hurting her, but she kept on loving him just to get through the day.

But even if Henrietta still loved Butch, that didn't mean Butch loved her back, he loved beer more than her or Henry at the very least.

She could have just stayed right there forever and ever, staring on at her husband's large sleeping figure, with his pot belly showing under the blanket's and the stench of booze and road houses under his breath.

She couldn't take it anymore though, and that part of her that reminded her over and over again of their love had to be snuffed out tonight for her own good.

She finally rose to her feet, confident enough that she wouldn't wake him, then walked over to his side of the bed.

Closer inspection of his face revealed premature wrinkles and twinges of grey hair, showing what the stress of his job and going to bars 24/7 had been doing to her husband's previously handsome face.

When they had met he looked so kind and loving, like a fairytale prince but a bit harier and harder around the edges, but thr fairytale seemed to die after he got back from the marines.

They were both only in their 30's but Butch had drank so much now his body looked 60, and living with a guy like Butch wasn't doing any favors to Henrietta's face either.

The stress would turn her beautiful blonde locks grey before too long now, and walking on eggshells around butch had already begun to give her early signs of crows feet.

It was like he was sucking out all the color from her life the longer she stayed, like the prospect of a happy ending was becoming farther and farther away from her with each day she kept calling Butch her husband.

She had to get away now, or she might never get the strength to leave ever again, and the next time she did, it might be too late to do anything.

She sighed once again with a shallow shakey breath, then pinched her little fingers around Butch's gold wedding band to slide it right off.

The ring glinted in the moonlight that spilled through their bedside windows, it was much too big to fit on Henriettas dainty fingers, but she could certainly pawn it off for money to escape.

Even if she couldn't, she still didn't wanna let Butch keep anything that reminded him of her, the ring was honestly better off at the bottom of a lake than on him.

She shoved the ring into one of her dressing gown pockets and opened the closet to reveal an already packed suit case.

It'd been sitting in there for months now, brought out then shoved back in three times before, those three times being Henrietta's other numerous attempts at leaving.

She had chickened out so many times, it almost felt unreal to think it was actually happening now, and that this would (hopefully) be the very last time she'd ever see her husband.

She sneaked out of the bedroom, carefully dodging creaky floor board after creaky floor board until she reached the front door of the house.

She placed her hand on the door knob, but something stopped her from walking out of the door right then and there.

Despite the urgency of the situation and Henrietta's fears, she couldn't leave just yet, she still had one more thing she needed to do, and it was probably the hardest thing she'd ever have to do in her whole life, much harder than leaving Butch.

She placed her suit case by the front door and creeped into the hallway, gently pressing against a door with big colorful letters that crookedly spelled out "Henry's" in the center.

The room looked like your standard toddler's room, toys strewn about, chairs to sit in, and a big basket of tiny clothes that needed to be washed, and over in the corner, right by a window, was a little toddler cot, with a sleepy toddler resting soundly on his stomache.

Henry was only 4, brown eyed, cherub curled, rosy cheeked, and so so very tiny. She knew that was quite an odd thing to note about your son, most other mothers would go on about how their sons were so handsome or strong for their age, and even though little Henry was both of those things, Henrietta could never get over just how freaking tiny he was.

He was a little bit smaller than your average four year old, probably due to the fact he was born premature.

Butch had caused her water to break 2 weeks earlier than the due date, and Henrietta couldn't even remember over what.

She just remembered him screaming and hitting at her a lot and suddenly being rushed to the hospital to give birth.

Thankfully, the doctors they'd taken him to said he was quite the lucky, despite the complications in his birth he was mostly healthy, and a growth spurt would probably fix his height no biggie, but for now he was still just a fairly tiny tot.

She knelt down beside him, rubbing a gentle hand across his cheek as she took in every bit of her son she could.

His mouth was hung open, and his right hand was balled into a little fist with his thumb still sticking out.

Poor Henry often sucked on his thumb for comfort, something that Henrietta found kinda cute but seemed to enrage Butch to no end.

He'd often notice Henry calmly sucking on his thumb in the living room and rip it right out of his mouth, telling him he was too old for that and it'd make his teeth grow in crooked and ugly.

He'd been trying to get Henry to break the habit for a while now, even resorting to soaking the boys thumb in vinegar, but the habit persisted.

Henrietta closed her eyes and exhaled out of her nose, then gently picked up Henry's hand and tenderly stuck his thumb back in his mouth.

Even if it was a bad habit he needed to break eventually, it felt cruel to force it on him now, he deserved to be comforted in his dreams.

He deserved to suck his thumb and cuddle with plushies and laugh at things that weren't funny.

She hoped he could hold onto that for as long as possible, innocence is such a rare thing these days, she wished for him to stay little and niave so maybe he wouldn't suffer so much grief.

She considered for a brief moment taking Henry with her, but she quickly dismissed it.

She wouldn't dare, a boy needs his father, they need each other.

She couldn't raise him all by herself, the entire reason she married butch at all was she was pregnant and didn't wanna be a single mother.

She'd seen the way people reacted to single mothers in Derry, it wasn't good, and he didn't want Henry to grow up with that stigma either.

"Better to be left by mommy than daddy" Henrietta mumbled, rubbing his other hand.

"I know you'll hate me for this. I know you'll never forgive me, but I hope you can understand one day why i'm leaving. I want you to be happy Henry, I want you to grow up big and strong, to be a protector, I want you to be everything your father isn't. I'm from a long line of Henry's and they all did great things. That name carries weight. I know you'll grow up good, and i'm sorry i won't be around to see it.".

She stood back up and walked back over to Henry's bedroom door with tears in her eyes, then turned to give him one last glance before she walked out forever.

"I love you Henry. I'll always love you. Even if you don't always love me." She said, nodding.

And with that final confession, she closed Henry's door, picked up her suit case, and left.

Come morning time, Butch Bowers nearly smashed everything in the whole house, and poor poor Henry was left all alone...

Henrietta Smith Bowers Duterte, the first female undertaker in the nation, was born free in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Henrietta Bowers was a tailor who made capes, coats, and cloaks for the city’s middle and upper classes. In 1852 at the age of 35 she married Francis Duterte, a Haitian-born local coffin maker. Together Henrietta and Francis had several children, but none survived infancy. Francis Duterte was a member of the Moral Reform Retreat, a local organization which supported the abolition of slavery and equal rights for women.

After the death of her husband in 1858, Henrietta Duterte defied the gender restrictions of her era by assuming control over her late husband’s business. In doing this, she became the first woman undertaker in the city, and the first woman undertaker in the nation.

Like her husband, Henrietta Duterte worked to abolish slavery. She became an agent of the Underground Railroad, often hiding runways in coffins or disguising them as part of funeral processions to ensure their safe passage through the city. She also supported the African American community through philanthropic projects.

Bowers (February 9, 1811 – October 5, 1873) was an entrepreneur, organist, and vestryman at St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, and a founding member of the first Grand United Order of Odd Fellows for African Americans in Pennsylvania. He was active in the anti-slavery movement in Philadelphia and was involved in the founding of several organizations including the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. "A fervent abolitionist and outspoken opponent of colonization, [he] was much in demand as a public speaker." He was born in Philadelphia to John and Henrietta Bowers. His father, John C. Bowers, Sr. (1773–1844), was a secondhand clothing dealer, a vestryman and school trustee at St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, and one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. He was a member of St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, where he became the organist. Two of his siblings pursued singing careers. He trained his brother, Thomas Bowers, in the piano and organ; his brother pursued voice training with famed African American concert artist Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield and embarked on a solo career as a concert tenor. Their sister Sarah Sedgwick Bowers studied as a concert soprano and toured professionally in 1856. He trained as a tailor and became the proprietor of a clothing shop at No. 71 South Second Street, Philadelphia. Martin Delany describes him as the owner of a "fashionable merchant tailor shop" together with his brother, Thomas, catering to upper-class gentlemen and businessmen in Philadelphia, while Henry M. Olivia is the youngest child of Oscar and Henrietta. When her mother left due to the abuse she sustained from Oscar, the abuse moved to her brother and her.

Olivia was the splitting imagine of her mother and that pissed Oscar off even more that he began to be the women of the house. She cooked and cleaned while still being abused physically and mentally on a daily basis.

When she got her first period, she was now a women in her father's eyes and that meant she had to pleasure her father sexually, she was almost raped on a daily basis by the man and the twins were even forced to have sex together as Henry had to man up and take what was his right.

To most Olivia was a mute, she was quiet and submissive. She went to school and got good grades and she was never bullied after Henry and his friends made sure to let the whole school know that she was untouchable.

Thinking about how absolutely wretched Henry's time at Juniper Hill's had to have been, and how awful it was for Pennywise to still keep fucking with his head, just to keep him the perfect little violent puppet.

Imagine him slowly going mad for real the longer he sits in his little room, only to be endlessly taunted by horrific ghosts of his pasts that just won't let him rest at ungodly hours of the night.

Imagine the shambling corpse of his father showing up to scream at Henry just like when he was a little boy, chastising him for still being such a whiney little cry baby who made his mother leave. "You didn't seriously think you killed me Henry, did you? a sissy like you couldn't kill a god damn house cat! If i had known you were gonna grow up to he such fucking wuss i would have chopped your balls off when you were born and called you Henrietta? I bet you woule have loved that wouldn't you?! You fucking tranny fag!".

Then Patrick would show up, gloating to him about how much he missed his little boytoy, making gross sexual remarks and putting his hands all over him. Describing how much he simply ADORED what they did in the junkyard that day, threatening to do it again right here right now wether he likes it or not so everyone can see how much of a little queer he is, a little hypocritical pansy queer. Taking great pleasure in describing to poor trembling Henry all the ways he plans to humiliate him with sexual and verbal abuse.

And just for extra measure, every so often a member of the losers club might drop by to taunt him, reveling in how old and weak and terrified Henry is now.

A young Eddie Kaspbrak telling him in great detail how frail and weak his age must have made him, a young Ben Hanscom coming to point out how his own struggles with weight and food from living in the asylum for 27 years, ect. Ect. All so Henry feels the need to snap and scream how he still hates them snd could kill them all if he wanted too.

There are some nights Henry tries to fight back against these awful visions of his past, and cling on to the very very small twinges of sanity he has left.

Moments where he tries to be calm and remind himself of the very few happy memories he had with his mom and whenever he would hang out with Belch, Vic, and Patrick like they were just normal kids. When they would drive around and listen to metal music, head banging like rock stars, or when they'd take turns shooting a pistol at random stuff in a junkyard, or when Vic simply asked him if he was ok after his dad humiliated him... but nothing works.

They don't go away, and to the rest of the hospital staff, all they see is a deeply disturbed and frightened fourty year old man with his hands over his ears, eyes clenched tight with tears streaming down his face as he begs and screams for some invisible force to stop hurting him and just LEAVE. HIM. ALONE.

The hospital staff may seem sympathetic but their thoughts are all the same: "lock this one up and throw away the key.". They don't even wanna help anymore, and even if they did, it wouldn't do anything. He's not allowed to recover. So they just keep him medicated day in and day out, till he's practically a zombie who can't take care of himself. And it still doesn't fucking work.

And that's when Henry Bowers to loathe, and even fear nights in the asylum. During the day he's so out of it he can't help but smile and forget where he came from. His only link to sanity/the outside world now is just little nighlight they gave him to put by his bed. But the night is still so fucking terrifying, after all... that's when Patrick comes back. That's when his father shows up to scream at him. That's when the losers club have a laugh at his expense. That's when... that's when the moon talks to him.

Henry Bowers is terrible person and was a deranged and terrible child, and i'm not gonna sit and pretend like he ain't, but there's something incredibly sad to me about how even 27 years later, Henry is still being tortured. He's just a pathetic old man now and Pennywise is still fucking with him to make him him an effective puppet. There's no hope for recovery or improvement, and there never was. not even when he was little.

No one asked but: here’s why I believe Henry Bowers is a more complex character then people want to believe.

General tw, sexual abuse, self harm, abuse, religious trauma. The whole shabang. 

 So each of the Losers go through their own form of trauma. Whether it be with Bev And her father  who cannonly sexually abuses her, Mike dealing with racism, Richie with internalized homophobia (and the bowers gang being dicks about it), Bill losing his younger brother, Stan having subtext to either an abusive household due to a somewhat strict household (and possibly internalized homophobia), Eddie and his mothers munchousing by-proxy, or Ben being both fat and the new kid. Each of these losers go through pretty sever trauma. And Henry goes through something similar. (this is where I start talking about his trauma)Butch is an asshole, and in plenty of scenes we see Henry going from big bad macho man to being a more skiddish guy whenever Butch is around (ei, the scene where Hen is shooting the bottles with the rest of the gang), and even in a deleted scene where Henry is putting ointment on cuts and scars his father gave him! (note: his fathers abuse is also the reason why his mother, henrietta, left when he was 6/7) Now, going off all of this; Henry isn't actually evil. He's putting up this front so 1. His father doesn't think his raising some gay (Which it is heavily implied that Henry is into dudes) and 2. So his father doesn't think Henry is ruining the family name! So! If Bowers went to therapy, or even just allowed the Losers to realize that Henry isn't actually that evil from the get go, it's just him trying to impress his father, he could easily be in the losers club. Albeit, it might take them a shit ton of time to gain trust in Henry as he was a dick (even more eviler in the book than anything. So in reality this could only really work in the 2017 remake) But he still could show them that he is only this big bad evil man so his father thinks he's raising a true boy and not a 'weakling'. This isn’t even scratching the fact that Henry is so Heavily coded to be gay it’s pretty much cannon. 

It's hinted at multiple times in the book itself because of all the times Pennywise taunts Henry. Even going as Bev at one point to be like "Haha you don't like girls" 

AND Originally in the remakes script (the one that Steven king adored but it was MUCH MUCH DARKER) It had the Bowers gang going on a date with Greta and her gals. And it was implied that Henry didn't actually like it/want to go! Which was a nod to his lack of attraction to girls!! 

Also there's the Junkyard scene where Patrick Jerks Henry off and himself off at the same time, and Henry was lowkey into it. stopped it once Pat was like "Let me put it in my mouth" I think so actually! 

AND FUN FACT!!! IN the remake Henry has a hooped earing in his left ear. AND in the 80's when the remake is set (the first chapter) That was a sign for gay men to notify other gay men that they were gay!!! And it's only in his left ear :D

Now there’s some common criticism I’ve gotten while discussing this with friends:  “Didn’t he attempt and rape Bev?” Yes. He did and I’m not denying this. I feel like if things were different early on with Henry *cough*(therapy) *cough* he would be a very different character in book (But mostly in the movies)

“Henry is literally a villain, he doesn’t deserve a redemption”  Keep that same energy for all the other characters in IT. (Richie was literally racist in the books.) Yes, He’s a villain. But unlike Patrick, he actually has a reason to be the bad guy.
