Risotto

He knows the complications are endless and at times it all seems incomprehensible- having an s/o who can literally time travel; but your sheer knowledge of memes and the way you seem to effortlessly drop them into everyday conversation is astounding to him.

He doesn’t understand them that well, no amount of context or explaining will help. It’s simply a language he does not understand that well. And the memes or slang he kind of does understand, he just doesn’t find that funny. 

However, he will never actually find it a bother when you drop a few weird jokes. The way they make you laugh and sometimes even dry-heave from the hilarity makes him love you even more. 

In moments like that he’ll dryly let out a few slang words he remembers. You will never forget the time he let out a serious and deep “yeet” when you were already hysterically laughing, his addition might have made you stop breathing for a minute. It still makes you grin when you remember him shaking your shoulders and telling you to “breathe dammit!!��

Overall this man does not really get it or find it that entertaining himself, but he’ll gladly tease you and make you smile with the stuff he picks up. Risotto just can’t stop staring at your beaming grin.

Formaggio

Although he doesn’t truly grasp the layers of certain jokes or memes, Formaggio is your man! He’ll start using jokes and memes he learned from you and is so pleased when he makes you laugh with them. 

Formaggio is great at continuing a bit but once he loses interest he just...stops. Which is kind of perfect since your knowledge of vines is a lot bigger than those of tiktoks so those quick six seconds are easy to get the point across. 

He’ll still get some stuff wrong but he gets the gist of them. He loves annoying his teammates with his newfound references and they all can’t stand him. The second he opens his mouth with that smug look in his eyes, they all sigh in unison and prepare for the incomprehensible babbling that’s about to commence. 

The rest of the gang likes you but when you and Formaggio are hanging out at headquarters together, they tend to keep conversations quick because they know once you two team up, the suffering will never end. 

“Babe, wake up! New meme just dropped!” 

You two are a menace to deal with but god if it isn’t sickeningly cute and funny when he calls you his baby, his cinnamon apple!

Illuso

Don’t get Illuso wrong, he loves you but dear heavens you are on thin ice with him. He isn’t the most joke-y type, he likes a good chuckle but please do not oversaturate him with references he does not get. 

He has little to no interest in the videos you wish to show him and even less interest in remembering the ones he begrudgingly watched. 

At this point you’re allowed a couple jokes a day, he doesn’t count or literally prevent you from saying them, but you know each other well enough to see when he’s actually getting annoyed. 

To shut you up he’ll try and fluster you! He’ll look into your eyes so intensely as you continue talking about a meme, one eyebrow cocked and one side of his beautiful lips curled up into a smug grin. 

He’ll place a single hand on your cheek, his thumb gently swiping across it while the rest of his large hand and fingers rest on your scalp. As he hears you stumble over your words and can feel your cheeks heating up he’ll get in nice and close to your lips. Ghosting his over yours and placing a single kiss that you wish would last longer. That’ll keep you quiet for a bit 😌

Prosciutto

Why are you saying these weird words AT him? Why must you crease his brows even further?

Prosciutto’s patience is getting tested with you and your innate need for adding incomprehensible colourful commentary to everyday things and situations. He truly doesn’t get it and there is no amount of explaining you can do to change his mind. Even after the memes make even a little sense, he won’t find them funny.

He does love you, so much in fact, that he knows asking you to stop isn’t going to work and it wouldn’t be a fair thing to do. He sees how your smirk feeds into the satisfaction of landing a joke in your present time where most of your friends know what you’re talking about. 

However when you come around his part of the space time continuum, playtime is over. Well mostly. He does enjoy being a bit goofy around you, his snarky comments get a sarcastic edge that parallels your need for adding a fun flair to mundane things. 

The only time you made him laugh with a meme was when you kept repeating “i can’t believe you’ve done this” over and over while poking his cheeks during a playful mood. After a final poke, Prosciutto’s resolve finally breaking, he couldn’t help but snicker. With one final addition of the line, ever surprised by the wonderful sound he makes when he finally breaks, you stop and stare. Enamoured by your wonderful boyfriend and his gorgeous smile. 

Pesci

He’s the most supportive partner out there! Anything that makes you laugh and giggle, like the memes you keep showing him, fills his mushy heart with joy. 

Pesci will kind of get them? They all make sense in a way, but some of them just go above his head because of the layers of internet knowledge he does not possess. Although he really loves it when you show him stuff that reminded you of him.

He’ll try out a couple of internet slang terms and blush really badly when they make you laugh. If Pesci could, he’d play your laughter on loop 24/7. Him baby, ok?

When the whole internet was debating their existence and that of every object because everything is cake, you quizzed Pesci on his cake-recognizing skills. He failed horribly, they all looked way too realistic and he might have had a small existential crisis. 

You playfully bit his wrist to show he wasn’t made of cake, planting some kisses along the sensitive spot. He shivered at your tickling pecks, relieved he wasn’t just a tasty confection and even happier that you’d love him regardless. 

Melone

Your meme comrade. 

The first mistake was showing him what the internet was like in your future timeline. He got so invested in its machinations and the entire culture surrounding it. He studied every single social media outlet. Every niche he could find only fuelling his curiosity. 

Pandora’s box has been opened and there is no turning back now. Not only does he get all the memes and vines you show him, he memorized them too. Melone will artfully display his knowledge in daily life when you’re around and show off.

Do you regret showing him? Maybe...but is it hilarious to hear him quote terribly long copy/pastas? Yes. Yes it is.

He will steal your phone so he can feed into his meme needs, saving the most fried up images that barely make any sense, to your gallery. You sorted the ones he saves into a special folder so you wouldn’t have to strain your eyes so much. 

It’s all fun and games until he starts referencing stuff during more intimate times. At first they made you laugh but as time went on you had to ask him to stop. 

Hearing Melone whisper “eeby deeby” while kissing his way down your neck might not be the mood you’d preferred. (hearing him sigh and say “so, no head?” was pretty hilarious tho)

Ghiaccio

To your surprise, once he understands the memes and gets the references, he becomes quite good at using them as well. Steering clear of the misspelled ones, of course. (one bad gloop might actually kill him)

Ghiaccio is such a big softie once he’s alone with you, letting his guard down and finally calm, not irked or stressed by his surroundings. 

He loves it when you show him new weird pictures you saved because they made you think of him. You don’t allow him to have a smartphone no matter how much he wants it (it’ll mess up sensitive time stuff) so when you’re scrolling through your preferred meme gathering app with Ghiaccio alongside you, he’ll point out ones and snicker a “that’s you”. 

It makes your heart melt how cute he can be with the stuff he picks out. Once he actually said “you’re baby” and you felt your soul leave your precious body as his cheeks turned redder than plush tomatoes in summertime. 

When he’s around the rest of the squad or in a more public setting, the usual stressors return. But with you around to offer quick witty jokes, things tend to become less focused on irritation. 

You are 100% sure you’ve heard him yell the famous words “AM I WRONG?!” during a heated argument with Melone. You had to leave the room to prevent worsening things, holding in your laughter and silently dying as you heard him rave on.

She’s reading over Mulder’s most recent email, grinning like an idiot at the playful banter that’s become the highlight of her workdays, when she hears someone clear their throat. She turns to see a tall brunette woman standing in the doorway of her office, dressed in a brown pantsuit and white knit shirt.

“Excuse me, I’m looking for the pathologist,” she says.

“I’m the pathologist, how can I help you?” Dana replies as she locks the computer and turns her chair to face the woman.

“I’m looking for some information regarding a few autopsies that were performed here a couple years ago, as part of an ongoing investigation.”

“Sure, I can help you with that,” Dana says as she stands and holds out her hand. “I’m Dana Scully, are you an agent?”

“Yes,” the woman replies, taking her hand in a gentle yet authoritative grip. “I’m Special Agent Monica Reyes.” She’s very pretty and has a calming presence that makes Dana like her immediately.

“Come with me, Agent Reyes, and let’s see if we can find what you’re looking for.”

They make their way to the records area where files for the previous five years are stored, and Scully digs through them in search of three specific files that Reyes is looking for.

“Do you work out of the Hoover Building?” Scully asks as she works, making conversation.

“No, actually, I’m a recent transplant from the New Orleans field office. I’m working with VICAP now, helping with ritualistic crimes,” Reyes answers.

Dana cocks a curious eyebrow. “Ritualistic? How so?”

“I have a background in religious studies, but I found my niche in crimes that follow a ritual with origins in spirituality, cult activity, sometimes gang violence. With the prevalence of Hudu, Voodoo and Santeria in the Southeast, I was quite immersed in that at the New Orlean’s field office, but I was transferred here specifically to help with the case I need those files for, which has ritualistic elements.”

Dana nods in understanding, pulling one file free and setting it on top of the cabinet before moving to a different drawer.

“This might sound strange, because we’ve only just met,” Reyes continues, “but I’m surprised someone like you would be in a profession like pathology, especially at the FBI where so many of your patients have met a violent end.”

“Someone like me?” Dana asks, eyeing Reyes skeptically. “What am I like, Agent Reyes?”

“Please, call me Monica,” she says with a soft touch to Dana’s forearm, “I just perceive you as having a very green aura, which tells me you’re someone who is very compassionate and attentive to the needs of others. That would typically make a line of work like this very difficult. Are you a Pisces, by chance?”

Dana stops the movement of her fingers flipping through the file cabinet and turns to look at Monica with a curious doubtfulness.

“Yes. Though you had a little over 8% chance of guessing that correctly,” she says dryly.

“I’m sorry, Dana, I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I’m often told that my read on people is so accurate it’s spooky, but I promise I have no ulterior motives.” Her smile is genuine if not a bit pained, seeing that she’s inadvertently been off-putting.

Dana quirks a little smile. “It’s alright, Monica. I’m not one to reject spookiness outright, though I will admit that I don’t ascribe to most of that...line of thinking.”

She locates the last file and sets it on the stack, and then hands them to Monica.

“I think this is it. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“Um, no, not with the files. But, and forgive me for being forward, but would you like to get coffee or lunch sometime?” Monica asks, shifting the folders between her hands nervously.

Scully blushes and opens her mouth to speak. She can’t help but flash back to the first time she met Mulder. Before she can get the words out, Monica speaks again.

“Oh, just as friends, Dana, sorry. I’m realizing how that sounded. I’ve only just recently moved here and VICAP is a bit of a boy’s club. I’m really missing the female friendships I had at the New Orleans office.” Her cheeks are also now pink, and they smile at each other shyly.

“Oh, sure, that sounds nice,” Dana replies. “There’s a little coffee shop a short walk from here that’s easy to get to on a lunch break.”

Monica sighs with relief. “Thank you, here’s my card, why don’t you email me and we can make formal plans.” She hands Scully her business card, which she slips into the pocket of her scrubs.

“I will. Good luck on your case,” she says with a nod towards the folders in Monica’s hands, and they part ways.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN DEPARTMENT

The math paper is hard to predict. A popular programming language should be both clean and dirty: cleanly designed, with a small chance of succeeding. But if we're going to do that with coworkers. I have to change what I was saying recently to a reporter that if I could only tell startups 10 things, this would explain why you have to compile and run separately.1 It was simply a fad. But as with wealth there may be habits of mind that will help, if you roll a zero for luck, the outcome is the product of skill, determination, and luck. This was another one lots of people were surprised by that. Languages, not Programs We should be clear that we are never likely to have accurate comparisons of the relative power of programming languages often degenerates into a religious war, because so many programmers identify as X programmers or Y programmers.2 99% of your code, but still keep them almost as insulated from users as they would be in a traditional research department. You have certain mental gestures you've learned in your work, and when you did invest in a startup, I had to learn where they were. In the years since, I've paid close attention to any evidence I could get on the question, from formal studies to anecdotes about individual projects.

In the earliest stages of a startup, you have to figure out for yourself what's good. I sometimes think that it would be misleading even to call them centers. Perhaps this was the sort of superficial quizzing best left to teenage girls. The leaders have a little more power than other members of the audience share things in common. But the founders contribute ideas. The empirical answer is: no. It was just that no one had really tried to solve the problem once and for all.3

This happens particularly in the interfaces between pieces of software written by two different people. I let the ideas take their course. And the thing we'd built, as far as I know, without precedent: Apple is popular at the low end and the high end, but not random: I found my doodles changed after I started studying painting.4 We advise startups to set both low, initially: spend practically nothing, and make sure you solve that. There used to be common.5 You tell them only 1 out of 100 successful startups has a trajectory like that, and c the groups of applicants you're comparing have roughly equal distribution of ability. In particular, you now have to deal with prefix notation: that it is not dense enough. Though that means you'll get correspondingly less attention from them, it's good news in other respects. I claim hacking and painting are also related, in the final stage, you stop having them. You can't trust authorities. What do you wish there was?7 Before ITA who wrote the software inside Orbitz, the people working on airline fare searches probably thought it was just because most people were still subsistence farmers; he would have liked to. How advantageous it is to redefine the problem as a more interesting one.

A lot of what we could. This is sometimes referred to as runway, as in many fields, the hard part isn't solving problems, but deciding what problems to solve. That's why so many startups. I think that this metric is the most influential founder not just for me but for most people, would be if you could get a 30% better deal elsewhere?9 They can't hire smart people anymore, but they want a third of your company they want. Many founders do. For example, what if you made an open-source language effort like Perl or Python. Mostly because of the increasing number of early failures, the startup funding business is now in what could, at least in the hands of good programmers, very fluid. What they invest is their time and copy you instead of buying you. Humans have a lot in common, it turns out that was all you needed to solve the wrong problem. Of course it matters to do a good job.

So what's the minimum you need to.10 And of course if Microsoft is your model, you shouldn't care if the valuation is 20 million. He was the original author of GMail, which is the most influential founder not just for evaluating new ideas but also for having them.11 Hackers just want power. Bottom-up programming suggests another way to partition the company: have the smart people work as toolmakers. And those are the users you need to escape it. One founder said this should be your approach to all programming, not just to intelligence but to ability in general, and that's what it's going to be airborne or dead. Who is? It's often mistakenly believed that medieval universities were mostly seminaries. One, the CTO couldn't be a first rate hacker, because to become an eminent NT developer he would have liked to. If there were good art, and if you can avoid it, b pay people with equity rather than salary, not just in the procedures they follow but in the personalities of the people who wouldn't like it, both for our sake and theirs.

Dark Savior: SEGA Saturn Spotlight #1

The SEGA Saturn's library may well be one of the worst examples of great games that went unlocalized. The system's reception outside of Japan made it a difficult market for even the most mass-market friendly titles, let alone the kinds of niche RPGs the system eventually became well-known for. Nevertheless, SEGA was pretty good about releasing most of its first-party titles worldwide, even if the games had obviously limited appeal. That all changed when Bernie Stolar made the jump to SEGA, but let's not dwell too much on old wounds. The point I'm trying to make is that in a period where Nintendo was leaving series like Fire Emblem, Mother, and Famicom Wars stuck in Japan, SEGA took a chance on just about everything.

They were especially kind to RPGs during the 8- and 16-bit era, localizing games like Phantasy Star, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis, and Landstalker in markets where the genre was seen as little more than a niche. While the Saturn's short lifespan outside of Japan stopped SEGA from doing at least as much for that system, they certainly put in a similar effort in the first few years. It's rather fortunate, because I can't imagine many other publishers of that time would have bothered releasing a game like Dark Savior overseas. It's an isometric platformer with RPG elements, an action-based combat system, a bizarre story that requires you to play through the game multiple times to understand what is going on, and technical ambitions that far exceed the hardware it was running on. The words 'isometric platformer' alone were a red flag for plenty of people, even in 1996. Nevertheless, SEGA persisted.

Before we talk about Dark Savior specifically, however, we should give a little time to its now-defunct developer, Climax Entertainment. The company was founded in 1990 by Kan Naito, a former Chunsoft employee who had served as the chief programmer on Dragon Quest 3 and Dragon Quest 4. Climax had the good fortune of making a connection with SEGA almost immediately. Their first project was to act as a co-developer on Shining in the Darkness (1991), the first-person dungeon-crawler RPG that kicked off the Shining series. Naito served as the director of the game, with Climax largely tasked with providing graphics and audio. Their co-developer, Sonic Software Planning, was also founded by a Dragon Quest veteran, this one by the name of Hiroyuki Takahashi. Indeed, Naito and Takahashi were no strangers. The latter had helped the former set up Climax Entertainment, so it's not particularly surprising that they were able to work together so well. The two developers worked with each other once more on Shining Force (1992) before going their separate ways.

Later in 1992, Climax Entertainment finally released their first solo project. Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole is an isometric action-RPG with heavy puzzle-solving elements. At times, it feels like The Legend of Zelda played from a skewed perspective. At other times, it feels like something else entirely. Although it's something of an acquired taste, the game did well enough for Climax that they decided to follow it up with a sequel. Lady Stalker released in 1995 on the Super Famicom through Taito. Unfortunately, nobody felt like taking a chance on releasing it overseas. It's understandable, as 1995 would have been pretty late for a Super NES game without any real brand power behind it. Like Landstalker, Lady Stalker is an isometric action-RPG. The main gameplay difference is that instead of having enemies appear visible on the map at all times, they instead pop out randomly.

By the time Lady Stalker released, Climax was already well into development on their next game. The developer returned to the SEGA fold to develop a game for the hardware company's latest system, the SEGA Saturn. The game's title was Dark Savior, and its rather difficult gestation period all but guaranteed that it would be Climax's only Saturn release. While it followed in the footsteps of previous Climax games by being an isometric action-RPG, the developer opted to go all-in this time. Instead of merely using perspective to create the illusion of a 3D world, they wanted to render the whole thing with polygons in real-time. The Saturn was known for many things, but its 3D prowess wasn't one of them. Even in its finished form, Dark Savior struggles to keep a respectable framerate half of the time. To make things worse, while the world is 3D, the characters are sprites with a limited number of viewing angles. Whenever the camera does anything fancy, the characters inevitably look out-of-place.

Climax's troubles with Dark Savior were more than just technical, however. The company had seen a number of its key personnel jump ship in 1994 to found a new developer, Matrix Software. Yes, that's the same Matrix Software behind Alundra, the 3D remake of Final Fantasy 3, and Final Fantasy Dimensions. It's unknown in what capacity, if at all, those members had been involved in Dark Savior's development, but losing several important members of the Landstalker team probably didn't help things. The people who jumped ship had occupied key roles in that game's design. For better or worse, Dark Savior had to go with less-experienced people to fill those roles, and sadly, I think it shows. I also think it's quite telling that after Dark Savior, Climax would largely move on to completely different genres and themes than they had been working on up to that point. While the 1999 Dreamcast game Timestalkers would be the eulogy for Climax's line of isometric action-RPGs, Dark Savior was the heart attack that killed it.

With all that said, I have a bizarre affection for Dark Savior. I picked it up a few months after its release on one of my family's many excursions to the near-by city of Winnipeg. Saturn games were basically impossible to find in my little town by the time 1997 rolled around, so I would meticulously plan which games I wanted to buy when we took these trips to the city. Something about the game stuck with me. The visual design appealed to me strongly, particularly since I first encountered it in Gamefan Magazine accompanied by honeyed words from the master of honeyed words himself, Dave Halverson. The game's scenario also sounded interesting to me, for reasons I'll explain shortly. After taking the game home and playing it, I found the game frustrating but also quite enjoyable. The story was amazing to me at the time. It didn't hurt that halfway through playing it, I was presented with a new TV as a gift from my parents for graduating high school. The first game I played on that monstrous 25-inch TV was Dark Savior.

Dark Savior sells itself as an isometric action-RPG, but in truth, it's more about platforming than anything else. You play as a bounty hunter named Garian who is escorting a dangerous prisoner named Bilan to Jailer's Island via a large cargo boat. En route to the island, Bilan breaks out and begins wreaking havoc. Garian has to find him as quickly as possible before things get worse. Just to highlight that, a little timer appears at the bottom corner of the screen, counting down the minutes and seconds it takes you to settle things. The opening section of Dark Savior is still quite good, in my opinion. There's a sense of urgency that keeps you moving quickly, and the ship itself is a nice showpiece for the 3D engine. The layout actually makes sense, and it becomes important to use that knowledge to your advantage if you want to see everything the game has to offer.

Even though there's a timer ticking away the seconds, you can't actually run out of time on the ship. On your first playthrough, you'll probably take a fair amount of time coming to grips with the controls and the ship's layout. You'll likely biff a jump or two and need to make your way back around. Thus, when you reach the Captain's quarters, you'll find him dead, with Bilan swimming off towards Jailer's Island. The ship finishes its journey, and Garian now resolves to track down Bilan and re-capture him. Unfortunately, he always seems to be a day late and a dollar short. You'll eventually catch up to Bilan at the end of the game. He's easy to find because he leaves a trail of dead bodies behind him, including the game's heroine, Kay. Garian puts Bilan down for the count, wondering what could have been if he had only done things differently. It only takes a few hours to reach this ending, and relatively speaking, it's not terribly difficult. The credits roll, and Garian finds himself waking up back on the ship. Was it a dream?

This is the genuinely interesting element of Dark Savior. Depending on what happens on the ship, you'll be shunted into one of five different parallel stories. Go a little faster and you'll catch Bilan before he kills the Captain. The story in that parallel instead focuses on the prison's corrupt warden Kurtliegen and the resistance that seeks to stop him. There's also a major romance plot with Kay, since you were fast enough to save her this time. If you reach the Captain's quarters even faster, you'll get there before Bilan. You'll lock the door, sparing you from battling him. He'll escape and swim off towards the island again, albeit with less of a body count under his belt. In this parallel, you'll end up working with Kurtliegen. You'll catch up to Bilan sooner, too.

Unfortunately, one of the rebel leaders grabs the powerful element called Bilanium and decides to use it to bring his old boss out of cryogenic sleep. This is the fate of the worst criminals on Jailer's Island, and they're never supposed to be awakened. The rebel uses too potent a mixture and ends up waking up everyone in the cryogenic chamber, releasing the most evil, vicious baddies the prison can muster, including... Garian? As this parallel comes to a close, Garian is face-to-face with his frozen doppleganger. It continues directly into the next parallel, so you don't have to do anything new on the ship. In fact, you won't even play the ship section. Instead, you'll see Garian's fellow bounty hunters sitting at a bar near the port where Garian just left from. They get word that Bilan has escaped and decide to head to the island to help Garian out.

Although each of the parallels takes you through generally the same locations, the events and obstacles that occur in each are mostly different. There are a few things that happen in every parallel, however. Bilan always escapes on the ship. Garian always ends up on Jailer's Island. There's always a drunk blocking his way, demanding that Garian prove his strength by downing a bottle of booze. After that, a child always accosts Garian for locking up his father. Garian always prepares to attack the child. In most of the parallels, Kay throws a blue rose that scars Garian's face, stopping him from killing the child in a drunken haze.

In the fourth parallel, however, Garian isn't stopped. He murders the child and is sentenced to cryogenic freezing. Normally, this would just be another parallel timeline, but for some reason the timelines begin to converge. The Garian from the third parallel and the Garian from the fourth parallel are now in the same reality. Their worlds are clashing for survival, and so are they. The game even name-drop's Pauli's Exclusion Principle here, which states that the same matter cannot occupy the same space. Only one Garian can survive and your time is limited. The evil Garian is trying to kill your friends in order to strengthen his world's chances of survival. You have to save them to help yours, but you have a limited amount of time. As the clock counts down, more timelines start crashing in, along with more Garians. In the end, you're the last Garian, and while you would think this would be the best ending, it kind of ends on a goofy note. Garian chooses not to leave the island with Kay because he thinks her sister is cuter. Well, that's a thing.

The fifth parallel feels like it isn't even canon, if a game like Dark Savior can even make a claim to that. All you have to do to find it is lose the first battle with Bilan on the ship in the second parallel. Garian will end up in purgatory, which takes the form of a fighting tournament against many of the characters from the game. If Garian can best every opponent, he gets a glimpse of a possible future and gets sent back to the start of the game. The game lays it on pretty thick here that Garian is a bounty hunter with a lot of blood on his hands, and some fans have used this parallel as a means of floating some interesting theories about what's really going on in this game. Clearing this parallel also allows you to play a two-player battle mode where the second player controls your opponent.

I'm not sure, but I think Dark Savior might have been the first game I played that used repeated playthroughs as a requirement for unlocking the story. Much like the recent Nier: Automata, you're not meant to walk away after reaching the first ending. The differences between the parallels aren't small in any respect, and the story gets more interesting each time. None of the endings are perfect, however, which led many fans to believe there was a secret sixth parallel that nobody had discovered yet. Perhaps there was something like that in the design document that Climax didn't have time to implement, but the game itself is as it seems. Full of mystery, ambiguity, and largely dissatisfying endings.

You really have to work hard to see all of those endings, too. Dark Savior's first parallel is only a little annoying. You almost never have to jump around corners, and while there are a couple of parts where you need to maneuver behind the scenery or make some blind guesses about where exactly a platform is in relation to Garian, you're given plenty of chances and time to handle everything. The game's irritating penchant for sending you back to the start of an area if you fall into water, lava, or a bottomless pit doesn't sting quite as much here, since the areas themselves aren't that big or complex. That's a mercy the game reserves solely for the first parallel, unfortunately. The second parallel, which is the longest in the game, throws some unbelievably difficult and often unfair platforming sequences at you. Garian can only move in cardinal directions, but you'll have to jump around corners somehow. You often won't be able to see Garian as he's obstructed by some piece of the scenery or another. Some of the walkways don't even stretch out in a direction Garian is capable of walking in, forcing you to inch forward by alternating between two directions at a time.

Even if you make it past a tough section, one false step will send you back to the start to do everything all over again. This doesn't get serious until the fourth parallel, where the entire game is on the clock. The timer is fairly generous, to be honest, but you won't know that the first time through. And if you fall enough times, there's a very real chance it will run out on you. Since you can't save in the fourth parallel, you'll have to start from the very beginning if you mess up too much. It's essentially a forced speed run of the hardest areas in the game, and you need quick reflexes and the patience of a saint to get through it. The combination of tension, stress, and exciting release when you finally make it is similar to something like Ghosts 'n Goblins. Only, you know, it's isometric. Which means the controls are weird, which in turn makes it even harder and more frustrating.

The trickiest dungeon in the game is the Silver Castle, and when I reached it again on this replay, I felt like I was going to have a flashback. I've played a lot of games, and many of them have been crushingly difficult. Somehow, though, it's the Silver Castle which has seared its brand on my soul the strongest. I honestly thought I was going to have to give up on it this time. I was fully ready to chalk it up to no longer having sufficiently quick reflexes at my age. But I kept giving the game more chances until I finally pushed my way through. Come to think of it, I think that's what I did back in high school, too. I don't know if it's the unusual story or the game seemingly drawing stricter and stricter lines in the sand, but I can't seem to give up on it. I have to concede that it feels pretty awesome to speed run in tens of minutes something that took hours on the first try. You could do this with a lot of games, I suppose, but only Dark Savior will make you do it.

The platforming is the only real challenge the game has to offer. The puzzles are no sweat if you have any familiarity with Zelda games or their ilk, and the much-touted combat system quickly degrades into button-mashing an opponent with more HP than brains. Does it feel good to beat up on Bilan like an oversized killer pinata? Yes, yes it does. But it takes a lot of the excitement out of the climactic boss battles when all you have to do is push them into a corner and hammer on the button. The game also includes a capture system that allows you to collect and field certain enemies. It's fun if you get bored of playing as Garian, but it's neither necessary nor terribly good strategy. Garian is almost always stronger than any of your other choices.

Visually, the game obviously hasn't held up that well. 3D Saturn games that aren't made by AM2 or Team Andromeda rarely do. The sprites still look great, though. They're huge and they have a lot of animations. From a pure design standpoint, Jailer's Island is an interesting place to wander around in, even if its polygons are constantly clipping and warping. The music is catchy and memorable enough, I suppose. It doesn't make a strong impression, I think, but it does tend to stick in your brain, so the composer must have done something right. Sadly, like most SEGA games of this era, Dark Savior has a stiff localization that changes a lot of things for reasons that aren't always obvious. Trade goods such as cigarettes, porno magazines, and alcohol obviously needed to be changed given the mores of the time. I think they became chocolates, comic books, and "jalepeno juice". The last one is kind of silly, especially given how important it is to the plot that Garian guzzles too much of it and nearly kills someone.

The localization team didn't have it easy, though. The Japanese script is much more playful and contains a lot of potentially litigious references. There's a guy who looks just like Steven Seagal who is named... Seagal, a guy who looks just like Friday the 13th's Jason named Johnson, and some pretty blatant references to Japanese pop culture. The latter wasn't a big problem, but the unlicensed cameos all needed to be edited for the overseas versions. It's just unfortunate that little of the game's off-the-wall sense of humor survived in the English text, because it truly does change the tone of many scenes.

Dark Savior didn't find much success financially, and it's largely forgotten by gamers all around the world. It aims high and falls short frequently, almost willfully at times. It's also one of the most frustrating games this side of Ghosts 'n Goblins. Nevertheless, I appreciate its ambition, and if nothing else, the fact that Climax got off the isometric train after just one more game means that there isn't a whole lot like this game that has come out since. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Dark Savior has its fans. I'm one of them. It's unlikely you'll become one, but it's okay if you want to give it a try. Just keep a punching pillow near you for the Silver Castle. Trust me on this one.

I like the dark tone of this comic. It really reminds you of the more horror-esque side of classic fairy tales that you don't see in modern interpretations (well, ok, you see it in SOME modern interpretations, but not many). Though, I didn't realize what sort of comic this would be going in (I figured it would be something more akin to "the five people you meet in heaven"). So when people started calling Hans "Hansel" and he came across an old cottage I was face-palming a bit lol. I really like the interactions between Hans and Reineke. It feels like this is probably the first time Hans has actually followed through with taking care of someone like he always wanted to do as a kid, and as the story progresses we see the beginnings of Hans unlearning the lessons taught by his father and his country thanks to the interactions with Reineke. Every action and inaction you take has a consequence, and every life has purpose and deserves love (even if nobody else believes they do).

Agree on the tone. I think the art really contributes to that. I had some trepidations going in as dark fairytale has been played out so many times that you wonder if this will bring something new to the table. But making the setting WWII and a turn to more of the Germanic fairy tales made it work really well. I haven't gotten very far in it but I am really interested in seeing if Hans continues this sort of upward development or if it becomes rockier and there's some relapses. What do you think?

What I like about the beginning of the comic was just how I didn't really know what to expect. Without reading the synopsis before hand, I was presented with a historical fiction setting, yet the art gave it this super eerie tone that made me on edge. So when the fantasy stuff started entering the picture, I was doubly intrigued because it was just not something I was expecting to happen. My favorite moment in the comic so far was actually probably the air battle because of the illustrations surrounding it. Just this beautiful mix of reality and fantasy that really catches your eye, and just overall the emotions felt so high and onpoint for the scene it's really stuck with me. My favorite character so far is definitely Hans. I just love how Hans is this really kind of vulnerable person. And while he has clear flaws, this vulnerability makes him so likeable. It really captures that quick nice niche of horror where the character isn't so helpless it's just a stealth nothing you can do scenario, but the character is also up against stuff beyond their skills so you're frightened for them. The characters I liked seeing interact the most were Hans and the Valkyrie. Cause I could not figure out where tf the Valkyrie stands on Hans, and there were so many hints dropped in that moment that I just want them to meet again so there can be even more context given.

Regarding the art, I just love the overall dark tone and constant changes to match the atmosphere. Like even though theres a cohesive style, the art can change very drastically to emphasize just the right points for each scene that really pulls me in. As for a theme the comic explores, I just gotta say it - I am a sucker for stories that humanize two sides of a war. Cause at the end, most soldiers are just people who are getting screwed over because people in charge couldn't be not jackasses. And while I wouldn't say this is a big theme, I do still like it's there. As for the what I like about the comic's story, honestly, just kind of everything. This is one of those comic's where I went in thinking, "Hmm I don't think this will be my cup of tea." and then I come out of it going "That was amazing." I love the dark fairy tale aspects, the realism aspects, the strange world, etc. It is all just wonderful. As for the comic's strengths, I think it's the art. The art for me is really what sells the dark fairy tale aspects and puts in that extra oomph of horror for each scene.

9. Is Hans Vogel actually dead? Regardless of yes or no, why do you think he is where he is? Additionally, if Hans is “dead”, is it possible for him to die again? If so, what do you think would happen to him at that point?

10. Over the course of the story, how do you think the events will change how Hans views his own life, his country, and the war he was fighting? Overall, what do you think the story has to say about war?

To answer the next set of questions then- I think Hans is "dead," but I also think the comic is asking us to reconsider what being "dead" is. And in this case, I think death is basically going to another world or a form of purgatory. I do believe the valkyrie implied Hans could die again, so perhaps he'd go to even different world. Maybe death is just this endless world traveling where each world is progressively worse in the comic's setting. Although I really do lean towards more this is purgatory. I think over the course of the story, I do kind of feel like Hans is going to come to think war is bad because it means lots of people die, many for no good reason and many who aren't even combatants. And I think overall he'll look back on his accomplishments with much more shame, not even just based on the side he was on, but just on the true horrors he did in the name of war. Basically, war sucks, people die, and while sometimes it's a necessity, war leaves scars that can't be healed. So I kind of think the entire world is composed of people who, like Hans, died. So while Reineke might be a fox in that world, perhaps Reineke was a human like Hans back on Earth - hence why Reineke is so insistent about the mix up. I do think Hans will help Reineke grow though, as I think Hans will just show decent kindness and respect that screams "hey sometimes you can trust people." I think Hans will stop whatever war has been going on in the world while overcoming his personal demons. And it will surely be a change for the better, though I don't think we're gonna get sparkles and rainbows.

I'm most looking forward to finding out more about the war shenanigans that are going on in Märchenwald. Cause no only will I think this give the story some unique changes in focus, but itll be interesting to see how the parallels might affect Hans. My final words are just that this is a wonderful comic. As I said earlier, going in I didn't think this comic would be my cup of tea, but then it just pulled me in with the dark atmosphere, the mystery, the characters, and so forth.

In the early 1900s, Harry Morgan, the company’s namesake, set out to build a fun and affordable motor vehicle in his English factory in Malvern Link, England. The invention was called a “Cyclecar,” and subsequent iterations of Morgan’s first design went on to win numerous races and set records. Morgan decided to discontinue producing the 3 Wheeler in 1950, with the last one rolling out the factory doors in 1953.

Inspired by the Morgans of old, Pete Larson set out to build his own 3 Wheeler, called the ACE Cycle-Car. At first glance it’s difficult to distinguish between it and a Morgan, though the Harley Twin Cam engine is one clue. The engine proudly sits on its rubber mounts at the front of the vehicle, a smart positioning considering it’s air/oil-cooled. The rest of the 3 Wheeler is of steel-tube frame design with aluminum sheeting making up the body panels. Double A-arm suspension up front is car-like in its design, while the single rear wheel is suspended via trailing arm and fed power through a belt. Skinny 19-inch front wire wheels are just 3.5-inches across and add to the vintage appeal of the Morgan. The hidden rear wheel is a slightly more standard 16-inch variety, wearing 175/55 rubber.

Analog speedo and tach from VDO are complemented by digital readouts for odometer, tripmeter, voltage and fuel percentage remaining, though the latter’s accuracy is wildly off. The Experience

Morgan claim 82 hp at 5250 rpm and a peak torque of 103.3 lb-ft at 3250 rpm. On paper, those don’t sound like remarkable stats, but once you get behind the steering wheel, it all makes sense. First, however, it helps to detach the steering wheel to aid ingress. Once inside, soak it all in. It’s not a quick-revving engine, but it sounds oh so sweet with each straight pipe running down the length of both sides. You can see it slightly vibrating way out in front of you, but you don’t feel any of that at the wheel or the pedals. Shift into first, let the clutch out, and the appeal of the 3 Wheeler is immediate. The engine carries plenty of torque to chirp the rear tire as you shift to second, though there’s a sizable gap between the two gears, says E-i-C Kevin Duke. And because you’re riding so low, the sensation of speed is elevated as the ground whizzes past. Manual steering means “communication is direct but lacks precision,” says Duke, attributing this to the skinny and tall-profile front tires. Braking, too, is not power assisted, but a meaningful push with your foot delivers, as Duke puts it, “pure feedback during threshold braking.”

Though its handling limits are low, exploring those limits is incredibly fun. Note the inside tire coming off the ground. Rowing through the gears is a delight, as the Mazda Miata 5-speed positively engages each gear, its throws nice and short. On downshifts, the brake and accelerator pedal are nicely spaced for a bit of heel-toe action (well, more like a modified version of it with the sides of your foot). The car behaves like a well-thought-out 60 year-old sports car because, well, that’s what it is. However, when the pace picks up, its limitations expose themselves quickly. The skinny tires mean you can’t pull enormous g-loads through a corner (not that you’d want to), and the V-Twin runs out of breath up top. The chassis does exhibit a little flex, which Duke surmises, “likely aids suspension compliance and, when cornering hard, helps keep its tires in contact with the road.” The 3 Wheeler’s limits are low, but it never claims to be a performance-oriented machine. All of our testers agree, driving it slow is equally as fun as exploring its limits, and probably more rewarding – at least you’ll have time to notice all the passersby checking you out.
